Perspective in business is important.

Perspective in life is very important.

Perspective has many definitions, such as the ability to understand what is important and what isn’t. And it’s the capacity to view things in their true relation or relative importance.

Humorist Will Rogers once wrote on keeping one’s perspective about other people: “You must never disagree with a man while you are facing him. Go around behind him and look the same way he is looking and you will see that things look different from what they do when you’re facing him. Look over his shoulder and get his viewpoint, then go back and face him and you will have a different idea.”

Sometimes it seems all perspective is lost. Consider the current political season. Every side of every issue has a perspective – often narrow – that prevents civil discussion. Former New

Hampshire Gov. John Sununu once summed it up: “Perspective gives us the ability to accurately contrast the large with the small, and the important with the less important. Without it we are lost in a world where all ideas, news and information look the same. We cannot differentiate, we cannot prioritize, and we cannot make good choices.”

Businesses need to keep perspectives fresh or risk failure. Products may come and go, or they may have stood the test of time. Businesses that look at things through their customers’ perspectives, rather than resisting change because “we’ve always done it this way,” are more likely to be around for another generation of customers.

Let me give you an example. At our envelope company, our motto is “To be in business forever.” The advent of email and paperless transactions certainly has impacted our customers in the ways they do business. Traditional correspondence and billing envelopes have declined. In response, what did we glean from our customers years ago? They advised us to focus on advertising mail, and we invested heavily in that direction. Today, direct mail (advertising mail) is on the rise and coexists and complements the Internet.

The Japanese have a saying: You can’t see the whole sky through a bamboo tube. In other words, look at the whole picture. Don’t be too quick to judge. It’s all in how you look at things.

As the saying goes, all that glitters is not gold.

Staying with the precious metal theme, you also need to look for the silver lining. Problems will arise, plans will fall apart, and your parade will get rained on. But if you look hard enough – not just through the bamboo tube – you just might be able to find a silver lining.

Are you having trouble looking for the silver lining? Feeling burned out can negatively affect your life as well as your career. These techniques can help you regain your perspective and your passion: • Fill in the blanks: “In my life, I was once _____ and now I _____.” You’ll find the answers very enlightening.

• Reflect on the past. Figure out when you were happiest and what got

you the most down. How does your perspective change when you compare your current situation with previous challenges?

• List five or six principles that guide you in life, and decide whether they are values you truly live by or merely talk about.

• Try writing a page or two on what you would like to do with the rest of your life. Don’t worry about grammar, practicalities or priorities. Just create that dream list.

• Record your thoughts, feelings and hopes, or tell them to a trusted friend. With someone to witness them, you’ll feel responsible for making some changes.

Albert Einstein explained perspective in the simplest terms when he was asked for an explanation of his theory of relativity that would be meaningful to lay people. He wrote: “An hour sitting with a pretty girl on a park bench passes like a minute, but a minute sitting on a hot stove seems like an hour.”

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Preserving Vegetables

W h e n the garden vegetables were ready, they had to be preserved in some way, or they would b e c o m e unusable. The common ways were canning, drying, pickling or using some form of salt brine. Electricity was not yet in the rural areas, so freezing wasn’t an option. Preserving the vegetables was an absolute must, since the farm ladies didn’t go to the grocery store regularly and if they bought canned vegetables, their husband would question “spending all that extra money.”

Canning of vegetables is still done today. The jar covers have changed.

What was a zinc cover and a rubber ring has been replaced with an enameled lid held down by a metal ring. Both methods still work, but the ring and lid seem to make a longer lasting seal.

Drying vegetables at one time was very popular. Drying vegetables today involves a process of blanching the vegetables before they are placed in a food dryer for drying. In earlier years the vegetables were primarily washed, cut into the proper sizes and the drying process began. The vegetables were placed on a sheet or dish towel and placed in a location that had good warmth and air movement. Another method was to put a layer of vegetables on a window screen and place another window screen over the first one to keep the flies out. I remember some small black spots on the dried sweet corn, proof that not all flies were kept away.

Blanching was not done prior to drying, since the dried vegetables were cooked at time of use.

Pickling and the use of salt brine was a preserving method for cucumbers, beets, onions, beans, peas,

actually almost all vegetables other than tomatoes, squash and lettuce. The most popular method of pickling required the use of a crock. A layer of vegetables, followed by a generous sprinkling of non-iodized salt, followed by vegetables, salt, vegetables, salt etc. Water was added to cover the vegetables and a large uncolored plate or large cabbage leaves weighted down by the cook’s favorite rock to keep the vegetables underwater.

These items were usually used directly from the crock and if the white scum was removed from the crock daily, they would be eatable into the new year.

Some recipes took cucumbers and sour kraut from the crock, put them into jars and were put through a process of cold packing to extend their shelf life.

Frozen vegetables have a fresher flavor, but if that is not an option, the above methods have been used for centuries and are still used today.

The Morrison County Sheriff‘s Office wants to remind residents of a program their office provides, which is Project Lifesaver. Project Lifesaver is a 501 (C) community based public safety, non-profit organization. The program provides law enforcement and other caregivers with equipment and training to quickly locate and rescue individuals with cognitive disorders who are prone to life threatening behavior.

Sheriff Larsen states that Project Lifesaver can benefit people who have Alzheimer’s disease, Autism, Down syndrome, Dementia and people who are susceptible to wandering. Betty A. Althaus, age 66 of Melrose, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at her home in Melrose, Minnesota.

Betty Ann Iverson was born January 16, 1950 in Redwood Falls, Minnesota to Clair and Lorraine (Young) Iverson.

She attended Montevideo High School in Montevideo. She was united in marriage to Vernon Althaus on September 3, 1978 in Milbank, South Dakota. Betty owned and operated her own day care facility that she ran from her house. She also worked at

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Ronnie, Scott, and Michael Iverson.

Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Assumption Catholic Church in Eden Valley for Frank M. Lahr, age 94, of Paynesville who passed away at Cherrywood Advanced Living of Richmond on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2016. Rev. Aaron Nett officiated and burial was at the Parish Cemetery in Eden Valley.

Frank was born October 16, 1921 in St. Nicholas to Peter and Elizabeth (Kinzer) Lahr, one of 16 children. He married Mabel Lounsbury on May 24, 1948 at Church of Our Lady in Manannah. They were married for 65 years and were blessed with 13 children.

Frank worked as a farmer. He was a member of Assumption Catholic Church in Eden Valley, was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of Catholic United Financial. Frank

Lucille Augusta Lentz was born on January 24, 1924 to Fred and Lydia (Rahn) Lentz in Bruce Township, Todd County, Minnesota.

Lucille married Glenn Shutter on November 10, 1942 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN. The couple farmed in the Burtrum area until 1943, when they moved to Long Prairie, MN. She was employed at the Super Value store and at Cathedral Press

enjoyed going to auctions, threshing shows, his wife’s cooking, playing cards and traveling. He was a hard worker who never complained. Frank was a kind, loving man with a strong Catholic faith and a great smile.

My Vitamix Experience

By Keith ‘KC’ KoKoruz Recently I have gone on a smoothie fix. I have decided to make smoothies a daily part of my life. I have a Ninja blending system at home that is about 5 years old and was shopping at Costco the other day, deciding it was time for a new one and I would bring my old one into the office. I grabbed the $129.00 unit off of the shelf and continued shopping. As I turned out of one aisle I was greeted by a Vitamix presentation.

The salesman was set up making smoothies and was asking everyone if they had a Vitamix. It wasn’t too different than watching vendors at a bridal show asking brides if they still needed their service, so I decided to kick back and watch.

As in all sales I watched people come up and take the samples he had made, ignoring his questions and walk away. I watched people completely ignore him walking by as he asked them what they were using at home. He just kept going without missing a beat smiling and being friendly. He was in no way effected by it and he was not a cheesy or pushy sales person.

In the course of 20-30 minutes, I watched him make smoothies, ice cream, and soup. During that time he and I engaged in conversation about the unit. He showed me a sample of the blade assembly and how well built it was. He mentioned it was made in Cleveland not overseas and that they had 400 people working for the company. He brought up the fact that it had a 7 year warranty. He brought up that 9 out of 10 restaurants own one. I don’t know if that is true but I have seen them in a lot of restaurants, juice bars, etc. He mentioned that during the course of my life, I will replace my inexpensive blenders enough times to have purchased his unit. He even addressed the white elephant in the room, which was the price.

He had two units. One was $399 and the other was $499. The difference was a

timer that allowed you to turn it on and continue cooking, or walk away knowing it would shut itself off. I even asked him if I would find it cheaper on Amazon and he explained that the models he was showing were made exclusively for Costco and they make different models for different retailers so I can’t compare apples to apples.

All I kept thinking to myself was $499 for a blender? That is nuts. How am I going to spend 4 times as much on this blender than on the one already in my shopping cart? I kept thinking that the Ninja is all over the TV with commercials and I was very happy for the most part with the one that I owned.

Then I started thinking about the other inexpensive blenders that I had replaced with the Ninja and the more I thought about it, the more I kept thinking that buying the Ninja was a mistake. I walked out of Costco with a Vitamix at 4 times the cost of the Ninja.

Since then I have thought repeatedly about my purchase and why I purchased it. It wasn’t the sales person. It wasn’t the blender. It was the combination of both. Costco has that same unit on the shelf 7 days a week but I am 100% certain sales go up when they do demonstrations. I kept thinking; how can I take what I experienced with this blender and apply it to my own businesses? A few things kept coming back to me repeatedly.

1. You need to be worth it. Not in your head but in everyone’s head. Even if people don’t buy you, they will respect your value. I currently drive a Mercedes. It has so many amazing features in it that I understand why people love them. The quality of the leather seats alone is significantly better than that in other cars. The transmission shifts completely differently and so much smoother than the Explorer I owned previously.

The windshield has sensors in them and they automatically turn on the windshield wipers, increasing and decreasing the speed as needed, based on the rain coming down. The Vitamix is clearly a much better blender. There is nothing wrong with an average or even above average blender, but if you are going to sell yourself as the best, you need to be able to prove it at every opportunity you get and to every person that you meet.

There is nothing worse than thinking you have paid for the best, and having only gotten average.

2. Your brand and marketing need to support your price point and the quality you provide. If you have an outdated logo, website, literature etc., you will

not be appealing to today’s millennial clients. Your website needs to be mobile phone friendly. You need to be accessible to the client when they want to speak to you. I personally hate voice mail. I always find myself wondering when the other person will check it and eventually get back to me. Last week I left 4 voice mails over the course of 9 days with a catering sales manager as their customer, and she never got back to me. I feel like people hide behind voice mail. We all let people go into voice mail that we don’t want to talk to at any given moment. If you are going to be that high end vendor you need to give high end service from beginning to end. It isn’t just about the day of the event.

3. You need to be able to hustle and want to hustle. I wasn’t at a restaurant supply store or a high end specialty retailer. I was at an average Costco with a variety of different people shopping from all walks of life. In order for you to be able to book jobs at 4 times higher than your competitor, you are going to need to put yourself out there in front of a lot of people like he did. I listen to fellow wedding vendors all the time talk about how bridal shows, magazines, websites, etc. don’t cater to high end brides. I am not a chef or a high end foodie. Buying a $500 blender made me hurt a little inside at the register but ultimately I saw the value and bought it, and I love it. This man also had ten times the energy and drive of other people there giving out samples to the customers and I am sure he makes 10 times what they do because of it.

4. You need to be ok with rejection, and a lot of it.

I watched this man get used by people who felt entitled to his free samples and walk away without giving him the time of day or even a ‘Thank You’, and he kept smiling. The reality is that only a certain percentage of clients will choose to spend the money on your service if it is 4 times that of an average vendor.

Even if they see the value, their budget may simply not allow it. Just because they choose to spend it also doesn’t mean that it still isn’t hurting them inside, so you need to be able to ease that pain and reassure them at every point that they made a wise investment in you.

In the 30 minutes I was there he sold me and only one other person, one while at least 100 or more people walked by.

We live in a fast paced society where people’s time is their most valued commodity. We have become a ‘need it fast, need it now, and need it to work’ world.

If it doesn’t you are going get negatively reviewed online because of it. Today’s millennial clients are looking for experiences and our job as a vendor is to sell them our ability to give them that experience - and then give it to them.

The question is this, is your product or service worth 4 times that of the average competitor and can you sell it for that and deliver it?

Everywhere David looked, he saw God’s “awesome deeds.” And these “deeds” provided all the “evidence” he, and those who met with him in worship, needed to have to believe in the God of Israel.

These “awesome deeds” can be seen in His-story: God judging and punishing those who were disobedient to Him; those who broke His laws and disregarded and disobeyed His commandments. They paid the price. His-story also includes examples of His countless blessings and unending love, mercy and grace that He graciously blest those who trusted Him. He protected them and provided for their every need as long as they were obedient to His Word and His ways. And He still does.

The Bible contains all of the evidence that is needed for us to see the “awesome deeds” of God. In His-story He gives us “evidence” and “facts” that are undeniable.

Christian faith is a faith established on truths that cannot be denied. With David we can “Shout for joy!”

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson Governor Blindsides Ag Producers with Executive Order Once again, Gov. Mark Dayton has surprised Minnesota’s ag community by announcing last Friday that he was issuing an executive order curtailing the use of a group of chemicals widely used by farmers in the state.

The chemicals at the center of the discussion are insecticides known as neonicotinoids. They have trade names such as Cruiser, Poncho, and Gaucho and are currently used to treat much of the seed corn sold in the country. Neonics, as they are called, can also be used to treat soybean seed, in addition to being utilized later in the growing season in the spraying of soybean aphids.

The announcement by the governor at the state fair last week caught most ag folks off-guard and came with little or no advance warning. I chair the Agriculture Policy Committee in the House and had no knowledge of the announcement.

It reminds me of his surprise buffer strip announcement two years ago at a meeting of pheasant hunters.

The announcement itself is vague and talks of the establishment of a commission to work on ways to minimize use of the chemical, said to be harmful to bees and other pollinators. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture recently concluded an 18-month study of the chemical, and this announcement stems from the results of that study. But again, many folks – including myself – have not seen the study yet. And since the use of agricultural chemicals is currently regulated by a federal label, it’s not known exactly how far this executive order can go. It appears that it will take legislative action to limit the use of neonics as a seed treatment.

There is discussion about farmers needing to verify aphid counts in their soybean fields before they would be al-

lowed to spray neonics to control the insect. Well, that’s what we currently do anyway. We don’t spray until the insect count reaches an economic threshold because of the cost to apply the chemical and because it also kills beneficial insects in the field that are natural predators of the aphid. Bottom line is: if we don’t need to spray, we don’t.

What concerns me most about the governor’s order is the phrase requiring farmers to verify they face “an imminent threat of significant crop loss” before using the chemical. That can be done in the case of aphids, where you spray when the count of insects reaches a certain level. But how does one justify the use of a chemical treatment on your seed corn when you are planting in the middle of April?

How can you say that, without a seed treatment, you face a significant crop loss? As a farmer, that’s what really worries me.

To carry this one step further, most seed corn is ordered months before planting actually starts. Are we and the companies that sell seed supposed to wait until planting time and then count insect larvae in the field before deciding which treatment can go on the seed? It just doesn’t work that way. And most of these companies work in multiple states. Are they supposed to segregate seed without treatment for Minnesota, while these same tools are still allowed in other states?

No one wants to see our pollinators disappear. After visiting with bee keepers, I’ve learned this is a complex problem. The “colony collapse” disorder is being attributed to several factors, including loss of habitat and a mite that attacks bees, in addition to pesticides.

We need to work together and use sound science in coming up with solutions to the problem.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, Our three kids are enrolled in a private Christian school. It’s a great place, and we truly believe our kids are getting a wonderful, faithbased education, but the tuition is pretty expensive.

We’ve already had to start digging into our savings to make this happen, and the kids are only in elementary school. Should we keep them enrolled, or should we transfer them to public school?

-Maureen Dear Maureen, I understand wanting your kids to get the best education possible. Private schools can provide some advantages academically, while a good Christian school might offer spiritual advantages.

But the bottom line is this: If you can’t cash flow it, you shouldn’t do it.

All of my kids went to public schools, and they are good, moral people and strong Christians. In the process, they learned how to interact with people of all faiths, no faith, and how to display their faith and beliefs adequately in their personal lives and in the marketplace.

The truth is, you’ll find great things and bad things in any school, private or public, Christian or not. And no matter where your kids go to school, as parents, you still have to teach them about the world — the good and the bad, the right and the wrong. Life can’t be lived inside a protective bubble.

-Dave Dear Dave, I work for a fire department in Mississippi, and I’ve been trying to get information on the state’s deferred comp plan. No one here seems to know a lot about it, so I was wondering if I should keep looking for information or is it not worth the bother?

-Brandon Dear Brandon, Deferred comp simply means you are electing to defer and receive a portion of

your compensation at a later time or date.

People who use these types of plans have a portion of their compensation withheld and directed into an investment of some kind instead, and you aren’t taxed on it immediately. It’s sort of like a pre-tax investment, but it’s not transferable to an IRA or 401(k).

I would only do deferred compensation after I’ve done everything else in terms of saving 15 percent of my income for retirement, including a Roth IRA. These are funded by after-tax dollars, but they grow tax-free. But I wouldn’t do any of this until after I had paid off all my debt, except for my home, and had an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses in place.

Todd County Sheriff’s Dept.

August 25, 2016: At 11:31 the Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle crash at the intersection of County 13 and County 102. The drivers, Margorie Moore of Albany, Oregon and Darren Weyer of Pierz were wearing seatbelts and not injured in the crash. Both vehicles received moderate damage.

August 29, 2016: At 10:31 the Sheriff’s Office responded to a burglary report at the Midway Bar and Grill on Hwy. 71. At approximately 3:00 am someone broke into the restaurant/bar portion of the business and then broke into a ATM machine stealing an undisclosed amount of cash. Anyone that may have witnessed suspicious vehicles or persons in that area are asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office. The incident is currently under investigation.

Safe walking, bicycling and driving needed as schools start new year There is an increase in pedestrian and bicycle traffic around schools starting as students across the state head back to school. The Minnesota Department of Transportation is asking pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists to practice safety as they travel.

Pedestrians should use crosswalks and sidewalks when available, and look left, right and left again before crossing the street. When no sidewalks are avail-

able, they should walk on the left side of the road toward traffic.

About a third of all pedestrian crashes occur during the weekday morning and afternoon rush hour driving times.

In 2015, 32 percent of pedestrians killed and 26 percent injured were trying to cross a road at an area with no crosswalk and no signal.

Safety important during last big wave of summer traffic Although most road construction is shut down over the Labor Day holiday, there are still highway work zones in place around the state, and the Minnesota Department of Transportation urges motorists to use extra caution while driving this weekend.

“Although major construction projects will be on hold for the weekend, motorists may still encounter lane restrictions and traffic delays,” said Commissioner Charlie Zelle. “Your safety is important to us, so we ask that you plan your routes, stay alert and drive carefully in work zones.”

Changes for the weekend include the removal of the detour for Highway 169 between St. Peter and Mankato, and opening all lanes of traffic on Interstate 94 between St. Cloud and Collegeville.

Motorists should look for children at intersections, crosswalks and along roads. It’s the law to stop for pedestrians within the crosswalk. It’s also the law to give a three-foot clearance, and to yield to bicyclists before making a turn.

Law Enforcement Scholarships Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen announced the commencement of a Law Enforcement Scholarship program for 2016. The Minnesota Sheriff’s Association has established a scholarship fund for awarding up to fifteen $600.00 scholarships for this year. These scholarships are due to the coordinated efforts of all 87 Sheriff’s in the state of Minnesota.

ering law enforcement as their career choice. MSA recognizes some students need outside help in meeting the costs of such training, even though they excel academically.

The scholarship committee, in making its selection of awards, intends on achieving representation from all geographical areas of the state. Scholarship awards will be announced by December 30th of this year. Application forms and a statement of procedures are available at the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office. Applications will only be accepted from September 1, 2016 to October 14, 2016. Scholarships are only available to students currently enrolled in one of the following three categories: 1. Mandated POST Skills Program.

2. In the 2nd year of a 2-year law enforcement program.

3. In the 3rd or 4th year of a 4-year college Criminal Justice Program.

In order to qualify, students must have completed at least one year of their two year program, or two years of a four year program. Students meeting these criteria are invited to obtain a scholarship application from the sheriff’s office, or online at www.mnsheriffs.org.

The relationship edge…Are you on it, in it, or over it? -By Jeffrey Gitomer Beginning a relationship is easy.

Exploration is predominantly on the surface.

Nothing too deep.

Nothing too wide. Nothing too revealing. In the beginning, all is well.

Friendships blossom.

Feelings emerge. And life is good.

It’s like fast dancing at a bar. You kind of get to know the other person without touching them. Watch them move, see their rhythm, exchange smiles, scream a word or two, and at the end of the song, thank the person for their time.

You get to know them, and decide if you want to dance again. If you like them, and believe you have some things in common, you may dance again. And again.

If you feel good about the relationship, and a bit of trust emerges, you may permit a transaction to take place.

A meeting, a dinner, a sale, or in a social setting, even a kiss.

As the relationship matures facts and truths begin to reveal themselves -- causing decisions to be made about the future of the relationship, including things like its length.

And one day you begin to see things you’ve never seen before, because life and business life takes over and reality sets in based on daily transactions and interactions, coupled with patience, emotions, feelings, and responses.

Measuring value, worth, and trust of the relationship in business.

I’ll refer to these elements as edges. You have edges or levels, past which you will not go. Tolerance levels, social levels, service levels, philosophical levels, and business levels. If someone tries to go past your edge, your tolerance level, you, in some manner, rebuff or deny them. Maybe even dismiss them.

Your compatibility for and with the other person’s edges, combined with your acceptance of the other person’s edges, will determine how the relationships grows or dies.

For example, I’m not a smoker. Nor am I much of a drinker. If I’m around a drinking smoker, it’s past my edges, and I don’t want to be around them much. I didn’t say ever. I just said much.

I may have a business relationship with a smoking drinker, but I’d never have a social relationship with him or her.

There are ethical edges, both personal and business. If someone goes past your ethical edges, you have a reaction, often acute, that says “danger.”

It can be as “innocent” as cheating on your golf score, of as serious as cheating on your taxes or not paying your bills. It can be an erroneous invoice or an unmet crucial (promised) delivery date - but whatever it is, it’s a relationship breaker.

And then there’s the emotional edges. How someone reacts when something goes wrong, or how someone responds to a point of argument. And how you feel about or judge their reaction. Are they whiny? Are they quick

tempered? Are they abrasive? Are they abusive? Are they somewhat of a wildcard? Flying off the handle. Or worse, showing characteristics that you either don’t like, or fear. A temper. A hostility.

A vindictiveness. An anger. An insult.

Even the threat of physical violence.

In other words, are they inside (safe) or outside (unsafe) your emotional edge?

Edges have a counterpoint: tolerance. You can tolerate almost anything for a short space of time. But each time someone goes over your edge, you become less and less tolerant, either verbally or silently.

Personally, I believe that “past the edge” silent thoughts are more dangerous and more powerful. Dangerous because they’re left unsaid, and allow the present situation to continue. More powerful because they begin to deepen and build emotion. And like any latent power, eventually, it explodes.

What are your edges? Where do you draw the line? What are you wiling to accept in others in order to continue a relationship? Many spousal relationships become petty before they end. Leaving the cap off the toothpaste.

Dirty laundry lying around. Dirty dishes in the sink. The gas tank on empty.

Dumb little things that erode love because after a hundred abrasive times, it’s over someone else’s edge.

Of course, there are worse edges in personal relationships. For the purposes of this writing, I’d rather not get into them. And if you’ve forgotten what they are -- any local news program will remind you of them nightly.

Rather, I’m challenging you to widen your field of acceptable edges.

Extend your patience. Figure out how you can help first rather than complain, nag, bicker, nitpick, or whine. Figure out how you can compromise just a bit more. Figure how you can have a bit more understanding and empathy for the other guys position or situation. And figure out how you can be more of a resource than a resister. More of a yes than a no.

Your personal edges determine your business and career edges. And your happiness.
