them to drive home the point when the occasion presents itself. I know this method is effective, because my readers often cite these witticisms in their letters and emails to me. I love that they remember these little nuggets and find them so useful.

For today’s column I am pleased to offer up some of my favorite aphorisms not used in my columns or books. They are self-explanatory and can stand on their own without a longer explanation.

If you prefer, think of it as quick columns all in one.

• Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

• Goals are like stars; they may not be reached, but they can always be a guide.

• A mistake proves that someone at least tried.

• If we are facing the right direction, all we have to do is keep on walking.

• What you build easily will fall quickly.

• When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show life that you have a thousand reasons to smile.

• A word and a stone once thrown away cannot be returned.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Silo filling

After a summer of working out in the hot sun, we notice that the evenings are becoming cooler.

The maples and sumac are getting hints of red in their leaves.

The golden rod is starting to show the world why it is called golden rod. The thistle tops are decorated with gray, getting ready to spread their seeds on the wind.

Acorns are falling and the squirrels are feverishly trying to store up a winter’s supply of food.

It’s fall. The greatest season of the year. The small grains have been harvested and stored. The hay that is still growing in the field will be left in the field to collect snow. The hot weather harvesting jobs are about over.

Now it’s time to think about silo filling, corn picking, fall plowing and going hunting. Seems like we have been waiting for fall for a whole year. It’s finally here.

Many of us can remember silo

filling. The corn bundles were loaded on the hay rack and brought to the silage cutter, which had already been placed next to the silo, with a long pipe extending over the rim of the silo. A curved “snoot” was attached to the pipe, which directed the silage from the cutter pipe into the silo. Quite often, there were buckets attached to a hook on the “snoot.” These buckets had no bottoms, were about 4 feet long and were used to direct the silage to the desired place in the silo.

One of the concerns when storing silage was spoilage. The silage that was next to the outside wall of the silo would most likely grow blue mold. The cattle would still eat the blue silage, but it just didn’t feel right to feed moldy feed.

The silage along the wall of the silo was stomped to make it more compact, a job frequently accomplished by housewives or kids. This seemed like a fun job at first, but since the silage cutter only added a few feet per day, the job became tiresome. The buckets were moved by the “stompers” to add silage to the edge if the silo first.

As the filling process continued, there was usually a hard frost, which killed the corn plant, thereby creating much dryer silage. The solution to the

is that they worship their creator.

• Nursing a grudge is bad for your health.

• Life is a bumpy road, and laughter is your best shock absorber.

• Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.

• We could learn a lot from crayons: Some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names and all are different colors ... but they all exist very nicely in the same box.

Mackay’s Moral: In the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take, the relationships we were afraid to have, and the decisions we waited too long to make.

Stomping silage was like standing in a whirl-wind of silage. Even though you wore a wide-brimmed hat, your neck, your pockets and shoes were usually filled with silage.

Silage levels moved down in the silo, since the weight of the silage causes it to become more compact. A silo was usually refilled a couple of times to get the maximum amount of silage in the silo. Some farmers had no roof on the silo. They frequently put a ring of snow fence above the silo to increase storage capacity.

Silo filling was a sign that the new season had arrived. It created a special feeling of anticipation for the coming months of shorter days and cooler weather. The whole world was about to change.

Swanville Senior Center to host tour to the Fagan Fighters’ WWII Museum Everyone is welcome to join the Swanville Senior Center on Wednesday, October 5th for a tour of the Fagen Fighters WWII museum in Granite Falls. The Fagen Family established this museum (with landing strip and hangers) to honor their grandfather that was a fighter pilot during WWII. The museum is home to a pristine collection of fully operational active aircraft and vehicles from the war. Also featured are fine art, bronze sculptures and interactive multimedia displays.

Obituaries Sheri Lynn Lemke

Sheri L. Lemke, age 42 of Melrose, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at her home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 17 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. A private inurnment will take place at a later date in Pleasant Mound Cemetery in Clotho.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Sheri Lynn Lemke was born August 11, 1974 in Litchfield, Minnesota to Alden and Mary (Quackenbush) Lemke.

Sheri graduated from Long Prairie High School in 1992 and later began working at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

She was a caring person who worried about others which helped her in her career.

Sheri enjoyed reading, spending time outdoors and gardening. She had a

Survivors include her father, Alden Lemke of Sauk Centre; mother, Mary (Kenneth) Sullivan of Long Prairie; three brothers, Marv (Amy) Lemke of Swanville, Tony (LeeAnn) Lemke of Clarissa, and Nick Sullivan of Long Prairie; adopted sister, Stacy Carry of Melrose; aunt, Rose Quackenbush; uncle, Francis Quackenbush; nieces and nephews, Travis, Austin, Jaiden, and Jacoby Lemke, Emily and Grace Jarl, and Kayla Leagjeld.

Sheri was preceded in death by her grandparents, Albert and Ellen Lemke, Leo Quackenbush, and Vern and Doris Sullivan.

Serving as honorary bearers will be Sheri’s nieces and nephews, Travis, Austin, Jaiden, and Jacoby Lemke, Emily and Grace Jarl, and Kayla Leagjeld.

June 21st, 1975 at St. Mary’s Church in Melrose, MN. Herb began his life as a truck driver when he was 16 years old, working for his dad’s sawmill driving logging truck. He drove for numerous companies throughout his earlier driving years, before he and Laurie started their business, Lake Region Trucking, which they operated for more than 25 years. From an early age, he always loved trucks, and came to love Peterbilts in particular. He drove in every state in the U.S., with the exception of Hawaii, logging over 10 million miles in his lifetime. Herb’s happiest times were spent enjoying the outdoors, fishing and hunting, taking road trips, joking with family and friends, spending time on the North Shore, cutting and splitting wood, playing with his grandchildren, and eating ice cream every chance he got.

Herb is survived by his wife, Laurie, his children, Jenny Beuning, Debbie (Tom) Seidl, Sara (Cody) Winter, Trisha Beuning, and Scott (Jamie) Beuning; siblings, Marcella (Bob) Irby, Evelyn (Mike) Budde, and Leroy (Kathy) Beuning; grandchildren Brandon, Grant, Gavin, Ashlee, Brycen and Brooke.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Alvina.

Listen When the Ocean Speaks Wins an Aug. 2016 Mom’s Choice Award

Anderson, Contributing Writer For more than a quarter century, Mary Lieder Cebuhar, a summer resident of Big Birch Lake, has considered herself a water baby. “I have wintered in Mexico for over 25 years and spent many hours snorkeling in the Mexican Caribbean, particularly Puerto Morelos on the Yucatan Peninsula where the second largest barrier reef in the world is located,” she said.

The reef in Puerto Morelos is part of the Mesoamerican Reef, an ancient ecosystem dating some 225 million years.

At nearly 1,000 kilometers in length, it stretches along the coasts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras.

Back in the 1990s when she started snorkeling, Lieder Cebuhar remembers seeing a plethora of tropical fish and marine creatures; but in recent years there have been a lot of changes. “The water is cloudier. Parts of the reef and coral heads are dying. The fish population is much less than it was and there are pieces of plastic floating in the water that were never there before. The star fish, sea cucumbers and conchs that were plentiful are hard to find now,” she said.

The author says she has also noticed a decrease in marine life in the other places she has snorkeled: The Fiji Islands and the Bahamas. Wanting to be part of the solution, Lieder Cebuhar recently wrote, illustrated and self- published the children’s book, Listen When the Ocean Speaks.

The book was recently featured in the Ocean Conservancy newsletter, and in Aug. 2016, won a Mom’s Choice Award. The Mom’s Choice Award program honors excellence in family-friendly media, products and services. The Ocean Conservancy is a nonprofit environmental advocacy group based in Washington, D.C., that helps formulate ocean policy at the federal and state government levels based on peer reviewed science.

Listen When the Ocean Speaks begins with the words, “Listen. You can hear the ocean when you put a conch shell up to your ears. Shhh...Listen.

Someone is speaking.”

In the text that follows, Mother Ocean proceeds to explain to the children snorkeling in her waters, along with readers, why her water has become so cloudy, how hurt she is by the disrespect people have shown when they destroy the mangroves along her shores and throw trash in her waters; and the damage being done to the reefs by people who pick coral. The mantra presented throughout, “Save the Sea while there’s still time. It’s never too late to make things fine.”

Empowering kids is a major theme in the book. Lieder Cebuhar says she hopes to see her book used as a teaching tool in the classroom and beyond.

“I wrote about the ocean because of my fundamental love of water, and realizing that maybe I can make a difference in saving the sea,” she said.

If early reviews are any indication, she is succeeding. John Warley, the bestselling author of A Southern Girl, Bethesda’s Child and The Moralist, said, “Any child who has ever frolicked on the beach has heard the ocean in a seashell.

Mary Cebuhar has cleverly and creatively turned that universal experience into a cry from the deep, pleading in the language of the young to save our waters and reefs from the man made threats to their health.”

Kathy Loretta, editor of USA Today’s Mexican Caribbean edition in Cancun, Mexico, said, “With a cute twist, Mary Cebuhar brings the ocean to life to teach children about the importance of caring for it around the world.

The oceans and seas around the globe are in danger; reefs are being threatened by contamination, garbage and global warming... This short story should be included in curriculums and libraries in order to incite conversation about the ocean’s problems.”

How to Recognize a Good Tree -By Sheila Ripplinger ing about false teachers, prophets, and preachers. He wants us to have good judgement about the fruit on a tree.

Scripture is so extremely good to give us detailed lists of what is good fruit and what is bad. Galatians 5:22 is one location to find the list of good fruit.

The verses previous to that give a detailed list of the bad fruit- even to say beforehand that they are ‘obvious.’

So as we care for our own individual, personal tree, we need to be feeding it the proper healthy ingredients to make it thrive. We should not strive for it to just ‘appear’ healthy, but to desire that it would produce good fruit. Part of keeping our tree healthy and strong, is the pruning process that is painful and difficult, sometimes even taking a while to heal and recover.

In John 15, Jesus tells us that we need to cut off any branches that do not bear fruit so that our tree can be more fruitful. Periodically, we must take an honest and personal look in the mirror and realize and admit that we have some destructive and ugly branches that need to be cut off.

Knowing and discerning what needs to be pruned is getting to be more difficult in our world, because we are

Lieder Cebuhar recently met a four-year-old boy from England whose grandmother had bought him the book.

“After he read through it he ran up to his grandma and proclaimed, ‘I am going to save the sea.’ After he said that I asked him, ‘Brody, what is going to happen if we don’t save Mother Ocean?’

He thought and he thought and all of a sudden he said, ‘She will die.’ If this can touch a four-year-old so profoundly, it’s sure to impact older kids as well,” said the author.

Lieder Cebuhar’s hope is that Listen When the Ocean Speaks will raise awareness, starting with the children, as to what is happening to oceans all over the world. She also wants to see people work together to save the seas while there is still time to do so.

Mary Lieder Cebuhar lives with her husband, Chuck, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and during the summer months, in Minnesota at Big Birch Lake. She has three sons and a daughter, nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

I absolutely love this time of year when we can enjoy the garden fresh produce that we only get during this season from our part of the country. I miss my apple tree that we once had that gave us the tastiest apples! One day we hope to have another one just like it! The tree had been well cared for while we had it, and we truly enjoyed the fruit of the labor!

According to what Jesus says many times throughout His teachings, we are a whole lot like a tree. In fact, even in many places all through the Old Testament there are references made between a human and a tree. In Matthew 7:18, Jesus says that a good tree cannot bear bad fruit and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. That is pretty simple wouldn’t you agree? Yet so many people and religions attempt to complicate the important things He wants to teach us. Is His message perhaps too simple for some to grasp?

There is good fruit and bad fruit; Good trees and bad trees. However, you cannot always tell a good tree just by looking at it, nor are we suppose to do so. You must see the fruit and test it to know for sure. This was the whole point of the analogy. Jesus was warn-

One night before climbing into bed, Brad knelt with his mother to pray.

“Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray Thee Lord, my soul to keep; if I should die before I wake...” There was a long pause and suddenly he stopped praying.

“Go on,” said his mother to encourage him.

“I can’t,” he cried and ran from the room.

A few moments later he returned and finished the prayer, “I pray Thee Lord my soul to take.”

“What happened?” his Mother asked.

“Well,” he confessed, “just before we knelt to pray, I went into James’ room and took all of his toy soldiers and hid them. Then I hid his tanks, cannons and trucks so he couldn’t see them. And after I started to pray I had to stop and make everything right because I knew that God wouldn’t hear me.”

Many times we pray and get no answers. Often we think that God is not willing to hear us or unable to help us.

But that is not true.

We cannot knowingly have sin in our hearts and lives and go to God and expect Him to answer our prayers. If we expect God to hear and answer our prayers we must make things right first.

Said the Psalmist, “If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.” It is only when we willingly confess and forsake our sins that we can expect God to answer our prayers. It may be time to stop in the middle of a prayer, right some wrongs and then pray.

American Attitudes Have Changed Since 9/11 The anniversary of the World Trade Center coming down brought back memories of those fateful days 15 years ago. Our country, seemingly so strong and powerful, became vulnerable that morning to attacks we never imagined could be thought of, and certainly would never be carried out. Yet they were, with the result being the loss of thousands of American lives and a changing of world order, along with a realization that this enemy was different and couldn’t be fought in traditional ways.

I remember our country coming together in the days following 9/11. The sense of pride in America and its people … a feeling that when the terrorists harmed Americans in the World Trade Center, they harmed all of us. There was a renewed sense of patriotism, and that was good. There also was great appreciation for the work done by those in public service, the firefighters and police officers in New York City. They truly were heroes, and the stories of their actions going way above the normal call of duty, made us feel better.

Today, all these years later, I think our country’s attitudes have changed.

For example, that deep appreciation for those who work in public service has been replaced, in some instances, by skepticism. They don’t seem to be the heroes they were back then. That’s too bad, because our police and firefighters still do great work and are still heroes to many of us.

The second major fire in less than a

year gutted a block of downtown Melrose last week. Six businesses were affected by the flames, with three others on the end of the block having to deal with smoke and water damage. In addition, residents living in apartments above two of the buildings lost everything in the blaze. A call went out on social media that Thursday afternoon for supplies and clothing for those affected, and the result was an outpouring of support.

I attended a press conference on Monday of this week that drew attention to farm safety and the launch of the Tractor Rollover Protection Program. Intended to assist farmers with the installation of roll bars on their older tractors, the program has gotten off to a good start. In fact, nearly all the funds set aside for the first year of the program have been allocated. Farming can be a dangerous occupation, and it’s good to draw attention to the subject during Farm Safety and Health Week here in Minnesota.

Fall harvest is upon us, as the crops are turning ripe quickly. That means long days in the field for farmers, and large equipment traveling slowly on our rural roads. Be careful as we gather in the 2016 crop.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, My husband and I own three commercial buildings in Boise, Idaho, that are leased out long-term.

We owe about $500,000 on one and $400,000 on each of the others, and they earn $190,000.

The only other debt we have is a small amount left on our mortgage. I know you don’t like debt, but is it okay to owe on commercial properties that are making good money?

-Dawn Dear Dawn, I own several commercial buildings, and I don’t owe a dime on any of them.

So, I can’t tell you that I think it’s okay to have debt on commercial buildings. I believe the best plan for building wealth is to become debt-free.

Now, from the situation you’ve described, that doesn’t necessarily mean you guys should be in panic mode and start selling everything in sight. But I do think that you should systematically work your way out from under these debts over the next few years.

If I were in your shoes, I’d go ahead and get the house paid off first. Then, I’d take a look at these commercial properties, and begin working the debt snowball on them. Start throwing as much money as you can at the smallest debt, while making minimum payments on the other two. When you get it paid off, roll that amount over — along with every dime you can dig up —and attack the second largest one. Follow these steps until you pay off all of your commercial properties.

It might take up to 10 years in your case, because we’re talking about at least $1.3 million in debt. If you have a bunch of equity in one you don’t particularly like, you might consider selling it and throwing the cash at the remaining two.

But whatever the timeline, I’d develop a hardcore game plan to get rid of this debt.

Wouldn’t it be cool to have all that paid for? Talk about cash flow!

-Dave Dear Dave, My wife and I are debt-free except for a car and our house. The car is financed through her mom, and her dad agreed to send us half of the payment each month. We owe $7,700 on the car, and we have enough cash right now to pay off the car in full with plenty left over. Should we do this, even though her dad is making $100 of the payment each month?

Dear Dustin, If her father had agreed to send you guys $100 each month, ask him to continue doing that for the duration of the agreement. Then, you guys pay off the car now with your cash. There’s nothing dishonest about this, as long as you explain the plan to her parents and they’re agreeable.

The reason for this approach is twofold: it gets the debt paid off, and then you can get the car put in your name.

Plus, a situation like this represents drama just looking for a place to happen, if it hasn’t already. Family relationships take on a weird vibe when money has been loaned and borrowed.

If they’re not agreeable to the idea, that’s okay. All you can do is ask. But one way or another, I’d be out of this situation before the sun goes down!

St. Cloud Hospital Surgical Care Unit 1 Receives Award for Exemplary Practice

Surgical Care Unit 1 at St. Cloud Hospital was one of seven hospital medical-surgical units honored with the 2016 AMSN PRISM Award® recognizing exceptional nursing practice, leadership and outcomes. Call to Order/Attendance: The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall

by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was said.

On roll call members present were Mayor Rollie Johnson, Brian Lange, Robert Maciej, Dennis Westrich, and Joan Olson. People present: Wanda Erickson, Great River Regional Library Upsala Branch Services Coordinator, S.E.H. Project Manager Scott Hedlund, Public Works Superintendent Frank Koopmeiners, and Clerk/Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Minutes: Maciej moved to approve the minutes for August 01, 2016 City Council Meeting with corrections, 2nd by Westrich.

Lange moved to approve the minutes for August 18, 2016 City Budget Meeting, 2nd by Maciej.

Koopmeiners updated the council on the chlorinator.

The council reviewed the location of the maintenance Building/City Hall near the water plant.

Johnson directed the Planning Commission to continue working on the construction and location of the Maintenance

Building/City Hall.

Fire Department Report: The FEMA grant for Personal Protection Equipment was denied.

Westrich moved to have the Fire Department sell the old ’78 Freightliner, 2nd by Maciej. Motion carried with Lange abstaining.

Rescue Department: No report submitted.

City Office Report: Stevens presented the September calendar.

Stevens shared with the council an example of the welcome bags.

Planning Commission: No meeting held.

UCDC: The council reviewed the UFFDA Days and Heritage Days Festivities.

Johnson suggested the UCDC host a community meeting.

Recreation Board: No meeting was held.

Unfinished Business:: Personnel Policy: The personnel policy is tabled until the October meeting.

Johnson Jet-Line: Johnson Jet-line has cleaned all the sewer lines but have only video recorded 25% of the lines. Hedlund recommends having a meeting with Johnson Jet-line to solve the issue of finishing the project.

Johnson appointed Koopmeiners, Hedlund, Westrich, Johnson and Stevens to meet with Johnson Jet-line to work out any issues to finish the project.

Sewer Line on Borgstrom Street: The Borgstrom Street Sewer Project will be tabled until the October meeting pending more quotes to be submitted.

New Business: Upsala Centennial in 2017: The UCDC committee will be in charge of the Centennial celebration in 2017.

House Discusses Governor’s Executive Order on Ag. Chemicals A Minnesota House agriculture committee hosted a hearing Tuesday to discuss an executive order Gov. Mark Dayton recently issued restricting chemicals widely used by farmers to treat crops.

Dayton’s order aims to reduce the use of neonicotinoids – insecticides used on much of the nation’s corn and soybean crops – amid concerns these chemicals may be harmful to bees and other pollinators. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture recently concluded an 18-month study of the chemical, apparently a catalyst for the governor’s order.

Rep. Paul Anderson, R-Starbuck, chairs the House Agriculture Policy Committee, which led Tuesday’s hearing. He said Dayton’s order is vague and seemingly came out of the blue when the governor announced it at the State Fair in late August.

“A top concern is farmers and other people in the ag industry were not consulted before this executive order was issued,” Anderson said. “This additional layer of red tape could come with many unintended consequences, not the least of which are diminished crop production and added input costs for farmers.”

No action was taken at Tuesday’s informational hearing. Anderson, him-

self a farmer, said he appreciated the conversation but remains leery of the order’s potential impacts.

“The Department of Agriculture testified it is not looking to ban neonics, rather to reduce the use, and also indicated farmers are not abusing neonics,” Anderson said. “What is the point of this order if farmers already are adhering to the labels and doing the right things as stewards of the environment?

“We all want to protect our pollinators. I have discussed this issue with bee keepers and have learned this is a complex problem with numerous factors contributing to the colony collapse disorder. We need to work together and use sound, practical solutions with this issue. This executive order only serves to further alienate an ag. sector that already was still smarting from the governor’s push on buffer strips.”

Anderson also noted the use of agricultural chemicals currently is regulated by a federal label and that it remains unclear how far Dayton’s executive order can extend. He added legislative action ultimately may be required if the use of neonics as a seed treatment is to be reduced and indicated the discussion likely is to continue when the Legislature reconvenes in January for the 2017 session.

2016 Minnesota 4-H General Livestock Minnesota 4-H’ers from 86 counties arrived with over 2,800 animals at the 2016 “Great Minnesota Get-Together” for this year’s 4-H livestock encampment held Thursday, August 25– Sunday, August 28.

Education is integral in the “learn by doing” philosophy of 4-H. As part of the educational component, Minnesota 4-H requires every youth exhibiting an animal to also participate in knowledge tests, skill-a-thons, and personal interviews directly related to the animal species they are exhibiting.

Along with interviews, all 4-H youth livestock exhibitors complete the Livestock Quality Assurance and Ethics (LQA&E) Training which covers bio-security, educating the public on the role of livestock, and caring for their animal’s welfare. Other learning opportunities included over 40 exhibits featuring the “Science of Animals” and over 200 youth demonstrating safe and flavorful ways to grill the best of Minnesota Meats.

And, of course, 2016 continued the strong Minnesota tradition of excellent livestock exhibits, featuring animals that earned a trip to the State Fair by excelling at county fairs across the state.

This year also saw the much welcomed return of live birds in the Poultry department. The number of livestock exhibited included: 617 Beef cattle, 423 Dairy animals, 342 Dairy and Meat Goats, 241 Poultry, 313 Rabbits, 380 Sheep, 483

September 7, 2016: Notification of Predatory Offender Release: According to Minnesota Statute 244.052, the Todd County Sheriff’s Office is releasing information regarding a Predatory Offender named Eric Joseph Terhaar. Mr. Terhaar will move to rural Little Sauk, MN on September 9, 2016. This individual has served the sentence imposed on him by the court, and is transitioning into the community.

The Todd County Sheriff’s Office is holding a community notification meeting on Monday, September 12, 2016 at 6 pm in the Long Prairie High School Auditorium. Representatives from the Todd County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota Department of Corrections will be available to provide useful information on public safety.

September 10, 2016: At 20:24 Richard Baum Jr., 28, of rural Long Prairie hit a deer on Highway 27 near the Morrison County line with his 2012 Chevy car. The car had damage to the front drivers side and was drivable. Baum was not injured.

September 12, 2016: At 04:30 the Todd County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Long Prairie Police Department with a report of a tractor that crashed into the Long Prairie Hospital. No one was injured as a result of the crash. After an investigation it was learned that the John Deere tractor was stolen from a business outside of town in Long Prairie Township. Crystal Holmquist (36YOA) of rural Long Prairie was taken into custody by the Long Prairie Police Department.

Charges are pending for theft of a motor vehicle, criminal damage to property and DUI. The incident is currently under investigation by both agencies.

September 12, 2016: At 22:03 Bryan Allen, 45, of Swanville hit a deer on 341st Ave. East of Mound Lake with his 2010 ram truck. The truck had front end damage. Allen was not hurt in the accident.

Morrison County Sheriff’s Office

September 9, 2016: The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office reports that at approximately 2:55 pm, their office received a report of a tractor accident with injuries on 130th Avenue in Swan River Township, south of Little Falls.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, James Psick, age 62 of Little Falls, MN fell off his Farmall tractor while traveling southbound on 130th Avenue, near 95th Street. The tractor rolled back on Psick, pinning his head between the tire and the roadway. Psick was transported by ambulance to St. Gabriel’s Hospital with unknown injuries.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Bowlus Fire Department, Bowlus First Response Team and Gold Cross Ambulance.

Minnesota 4-H’ers from 86 counties brought over 2,600 exhibits, delivered over 200 public presentations and participated in dozens of group learning experiences and public performances at the 2016 Minnesota State Fair.

Throughout the year 4-H youth select project areas that reflect personal areas of interest and pursue hands-on learning that is both self-directed and guided by adult volunteers. The results of their learning is exhibited at county fairs across the state and then the best from each county fair is brought to the Minnesota State Fair.

Exhibiting project work and delivering public presentations at the state fair provides youth an opportunity to both showcase their achievements as well as continue the learning through the interactive and group-based conference judging and team experiences.

Highlights this year included 198 youth from 28 counties exhibiting their engineering and problem solving skills by participating in a Rube Goldberg challenge to crush a pop can in multiple and complex steps. 2016 also saw an intentional increase in the number of 4-H members who experienced 4-H at the State Fair for the first time, bringing fresh perspectives, energy and diversity to the 4-H Building.
