Identify and develop your greatest strengths

By Harvey Mackay I have had the privilege of mentoring hundreds of people over the years. I always ask them two questions: What do you like to do? What are your strengths?

Most have a good idea of what they like to do, but you wouldn’t believe how many people don’t understand their own strengths.

One of the secrets of success is making the most of your strengths. First, though, you have to determine what your strengths are -- and that may not be obvious, especially if you’re just starting out or looking to make a career change.

Your strengths develop from a variety of sources: natural ability and aptitude, formal education, job experience, internships, research, hobbies, volunteer involvement, and so on. You may not realize the depth of your knowledge or expertise, and that can seriously limit your job search or career path.

If you are in college, by all means take advantage of some of the aptitude and career placement tests to determine your strengths, weaknesses and hidden talents. If you are not in school, you can find tests online or at your local library.

Industrial psychologists are also most helpful in identifying areas that you should consider pursuing -- or avoiding.

A recent article in Classroom to Cubicle, an online magazine for college

students and recent graduates, cites a list of the 10 most sought-after skills assembled by Quintessential Careers: • Communication Skills (listening, verbal, and written) • Analytical Skills/Research Skills • Computer/Technical Literacy • Flexibility/Adaptability/Managing Multiple Priorities • Interpersonal Abilities • Leadership/Management Skills • Teamwork • Planning/Organizing • Problem Solving • Multicultural Awareness And you thought that all that mattered was your college major or your last job!

While it’s tough to possess all those skills, especially for someone just entering the job market or switching careers, chances are past experiences will lend themselves to developing specific areas of strength. Zero in on the skills that make you special by looking for these clues: • What tasks attract you? Think of the types of jobs that you look forward to, that you’d find some way to do even if you weren’t paid. Research companies that employ people in those jobs and start your search there. If you are passionate about a specific cause, that’s a good springboard as well.

• What tasks do you lose yourself in?

When you’re involved on certain tasks, do you forget what time it is and how long you’ve been working? These will usually be the jobs that use your skills best. As crazy as it sounds, I recently spoke with a new grad that got his job in part because he was able to reach a spe-

cific level in a video game. The employer interpreted that as a sign of creative problem solving. By the way, he also had demonstrated communication skills.

• What do you learn quickly? You probably struggle with mastering some skills, but others you pick up effortlessly. That’s because you have some natural talent and a deep desire to learn more.

My readers have heard it a million times: You don’t stop learning when you finish school. Be a lifelong learner.

• What do other people ask for help with? Pay attention to the jobs you’re assigned and the favors people ask you for. They wouldn’t come to you if you weren’t good in those areas. An insurance company customer service rep recently shared with me that she has been promoted to a key IT position, working as a customer liaison to help the computer jockeys develop consumer-friendly programs (which often generated a lot of customer service calls.)

• Where do you succeed? This may seem obvious, but some people miss the forest for the trees. Take a look at the tasks you’ve done best; they’ll use your most important skills. Don’t confuse activity with accomplishment. What you Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

Obituaries Otis L. Anderson

Otis LeRoy Anderson, Age 77, of Rosewood Estates, formerly of Coon Rapids, died peacefully T u e s d a y , September 6, 2011 surrounded by his loving family.

Otis and his wife vacationed in Grey Eagle.

He is preceded

in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Darlene; son Bradley Anderson.

He will be deeply missed by children, Scott (Barbara), Bryan (Patty), Laura (Sam) Caron, Dawn (Heather) Anderson; grandchildren, Matthew, Kyle, Kirsten, Zach, Rich (Renee) Anderson, and Kelly Caron; great-grandchildren, Miranda and Judd Anderson.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at St. John the Baptist Church in Hugo.

Elaine M. Niehoff

Elaine M. Niehoff, age 77, of Melrose, died peacefully on Friday, September 9, 2011 at the Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 p.m. Friday, September 16 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Kevin Niehoff, O.P. officiating and Rev. Marvin Enneking and Rev. James Spahn, O.P. concelebrating.

Inurnment will follow in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 to 12 p.m.

Friday at the church in Melrose. Christian Mothers and Daughters of Isabella will pray a rosary at 11:45 a.m.

Elaine Margaret Beste was born February 9, 1934 in Melrose to John and Elizabeth (Trossen) Beste. On September 14, 1957 she married Marvin Niehoff at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated from Melrose

High School in 1952. She attended the St. Cloud Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1955. Elaine worked as an RN for 35 years at the Melrose Area Hospital and retired in 1991.

She enjoyed birds and traveling.

Elaine was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, and the Daughters of Isabella Joan of Arc Circle of Melrose. She was a past member of the Melrose School Board and City Council.

Survivors include her children, Fr. Kevin Niehoff, O.P. of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Tim (Jan) Niehoff of Menomonie, Wisconsin, James Niehoff of Rosemount, and Daniel Niehoff of Clearwater; grandchildren, Andrew and Jennifer Niehoff; great-grandchildren, Tabitha and Lillyann Hyde; step-granddaughter, Angela Hyde; sisters, Donna (Bob) Sessa of Clovis, California, and Jovita Baker of Minneapolis; and sister-in-law, Helen Beste of Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marvin Niehoff on March 19, 2003; and brother, Dr. Gerald Beste.

Urn bearer will be Jennifer Niehoff and scripture bearer will be Andrew Niehoff.

Gertrude Schultz, 94, of Upsala, died Sept. 7, 2011, at Harmony House of Little Falls.

F u n e r a l services were held Friday, Sept. 9, 2011 at Community Covenant Church in Upsala, with the Rev. Craig Johnson officiating. Burial was in Community Covenant Cemetery in Upsala.

Gertrude Schultz of Upsala went home to be with her Lord and saviour Jesus Christ …. Wednesday the 7th of September 2011.

Some knew her as Gertrude, Gertie, Shorty, Mother, Grandmother. She was born Gertrude Ellie Freda Blank, Oct. 3, 1916, to her father Alfred Friedrich Wilhelm Blank and mother Elfriede Martha Bianka (Koffke) Blank in Kreis Belgard of the Pomeranian Region of Germany. At the early age of 16 she left home and worked as a dishwasher and seamstress in Berlin Germany. Gertrude lived thru the bombing of Berlin during World War II. Post War while working at the US Military PX she met her husband Kenneth. They were wed July 11, 1947, in Berlin Germany. She and her husband settled in the Upsala area raising

Lorraine R. Ruprecht The Mass of Christian burial, celebrating the life of Lorraine R. Ruprecht, age 91 of Avon, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 15, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Anna.

Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Lorraine died Monday, Sept. 12 at the St. Benedict’s Senior Community in St. Cloud.

Lorraine was born October 30, 1919 in St. Martin to Tony and Elizabeth (Holthaus) Thelen. She married Carl Ruprecht on October 24, 1944 in St. Martin. The couple farmed in Richmond before moving to their farm in Avon in 1955. Lorraine was a homemaker working

two sons, and started farming up until her late husband’s death 20 years ago. Gertrude ran a seamstress business out of her farm home where she made everything from baptism gowns, bride and bridesmaid dresses. For many years she worked at Munsingwear in Little Falls.

She was an active member of the Upsala American Legion Post #350 Auxiliary and marched in the Upsala Memorial Day parade up until she was 92 years old. Gertrude lived a Christ filled life as a member of the Community Covenant Church and Covenant Women. She was a long- time member and served as president of the Upsala PTA. Later in life Gertrude volunteered at the Upsala School as both a reader and listener to the first grade students and received the volunteer of the year award in 2000. Of all her accomplishments she loved being Grandma the most which gave her a chance to spoil, love, and pass on traditions from her childhood, her grandchildren were her pride and joy.

She is survived by sons, John and wife Maureen of Stillwater, Mike and wife Jan of Upsala; grandchildren: John of Albany, Matthew of Princeton, Catie and husband Bob Amey of Burnsville, Isaac of Upsala and Ethan of Upsala; great-granddaughter, Rachel Amey.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Alfred and Elfriede Blank; brother Ewald Blank and husband Kenneth.

Elde L. Brown

Elde L. “Winkie” Brown, age 70, of Grey Eagle, died after a long courageous battle with lung disease on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at the Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

Memorial Service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 14 in the community room at the Village View Apartments in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ken Thielman officiating.

Elde Lee Brown was born January 29, 1941 in Onamia, Minnesota to LaVern and Ruth (Anderson) Brown. He was raised by his mother, Ruth and his step-father, Robert King. He lived in St. Paul where he raised four boys and worked commercial roofing and truck driving. Elde then moved to St. Cloud and worked at the VA Medical Center before moving to Melrose in 2000. Frances T. “Fran” Sauerer, age 85, of Albany, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, September 12, 2011 at her apartment in Albany. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 19 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Michael Naughton, O.S.B. officiating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Frances Theresa Gasperlin was born October 7, 1925 in Krain Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Michael and Barbara (Rademacher) Gasperlin. On December 2, 1944 she married Melvin A. Sauerer in Macon, GA. Following Melvin’s discharge from the army, the couple moved back to Albany. Fran worked at the Albany Hotel for many years and at the Albany Hospital for 17 years until her retirement in 1986. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, word finds, and going out to eat with her sister, Tre. Fran will always be remembered as one who never forgot a birthday or anniversary. She always mailed cards to her family and friends on their special day. One of her favorite activities was to fill in calendar dates with anniversaries,

Maynard L. “Bud” Smith, age 90, of Melrose, died Sunday, September 11, 2011 at the St. Michael’s Nursing Home in Sauk Centre.

Bud worked for Western Electric and retired in 1977. He then drove milk truck in Melrose and worked at the Hardware Store. In Bud’s retirement, he made hug-a-bears for the Telephone Pioneers; they were given to traumatized children from ages one to 101.

Bud was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport, Royal Neighbors of America, Telephone Pioneers, and a life member of the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050.

Upon moving to Big Birch Lake, she became a Certified Nursing Assistant and worked at Pine Villa

Care Center and Das Goldene Wohnheim in New Munich. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa, Christian Mothers, Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 Auxiliary, and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 101. Gerry enjoyed quilting, volunteering for food drives, helping others, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

This five-week outpatient nicotine dependence program, led by experts from the Central Minnesota Heart Center at St. Cloud Hospital, is a group session with personalized treatment, a support group, medication therapy, relapse prevention and a self-help plan.

Sessions will run from 5:30-6:30 p.m. beginning Sept. 20, for five consecutive Tuesdays in the Heart Center’s third floor library.

Tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death accounting for approximately 443,000 deaths in the United States each year - one of every five deaths. People who use tobacco are at

higher risk of stroke and heart attack.

According to the Center for Disease Control, an estimated 46 million people smoke in the United States, which is 20.6 percent of adults 18 years and older. Of those, 23.5 percent are males and 17.9 percent are females.

Approximately 70 percent of smokers want to quit; 45 percent try to quit each year. The cigarette industry spent 12.5 billion in 2006 on advertising and promotions.

Lessons My Mother Taught Me

By Saralee Perel A few years before I turned fifty, I made a major career change. I gave up a twenty-two year psychotherapy practice to become a writer.

But it didn’t all

happen at once.

First, my mother died.

I have come to theorize that many women make their biggest changes when their mothers die, and I don’t mean just career changes. Perhaps it’s because we are forced into a life review of their lives upon their deaths. We, as daughters, are usually the ones who go through our mother’s closets and bureau drawers. There, we find layers of their lives . . . a gold baby locket with teething marks, a monogrammed handkerchief that was once tucked into the sleeve of a beaded pink sweater, or a faded pencilscrawled postcard from a first love we never heard about.

In my mother’s top bureau drawer behind her rhinestone dress clips, I found a photo of a young, sweet smiling man in his navy uniform - the man she didn’t marry. I also found a photo of a wealthy serious man smoking a cigar – the one she did. I can see regret in her face, years after her death, as I imagine her wistfully pondering what might have been.

And so, when she died, I began my

own life review.

I had wanted to give up my practice and be a writer. I always figured I could do that someday, but boy oh boy, lots of those somedays are suddenly behind you when you’re approaching fifty.

So, as I said, I did give up my practice the year my mother died.

And I began writing. But that took a slump, or rather a landslide after receiving one rejection too many. My putdown self dialogue haunted me with the constant reminder, “You’re too old to . .. ” But I remember acutely the moment my depression turned around. I was having lunch at a restaurant with my younger friend Deb. She was beautiful and radiant. She excitedly told me about

her new writing plans, making sweeping arm motions as she spoke of her dreams.

With her intense brown eyes riveted to mine, she shared with me how she was going to make these dreams happen. She was making worlds open up for herself.

I felt very distant from the scene in our lunch booth. Pretty awful, actually. I knew that it was too late for me to ever feel her kind of enthusiasm again. And I watched her, effervescent and brimming with life, knowing for sure that those kinds of feelings were behind me for good.

After we ate, we went for a walk along our village’s main street. We ran into her friend, Liz, who was also beginning new ventures. I had the oddest feeling. It was as if I was a hundred feet away, watching the two of them involved so excitedly in their lives and in each other. I responded when I was supposed to, politely going through the motions and answering “How are you doing?” questions at the appropriate time.

But my feeling was this – I’m too old to make their kind of changes. They are just beginning new projects, filled with hope and new promise. I can’t do this anymore.

It was simply too late. I had tried to become a writer but I had failed. I had crossed over a self imposed bridge and was no longer part of the can-do crowd.

After all, I was over fifty. I stood back, and watched Deb and Liz in their prime.

I was witnessing a younger generation soar. I drove home very depressed.

In my bedroom, I sat on the bed and put my head in my hands. Put it behind you, I said to myself. Being a writer is not as important as you’re making it seem. Be happy with what you have.

And just let that dream go.

I fell into distracting sleep. When I woke up, I felt just as lousy. I suppose when you use sleep as a drug, you don’t feel any better when the drug or the sleep wears off.

I stayed in bed on that sunny afternoon and stared at the ceiling. And then, I had a life altering moment. Those moments don’t come very often, believe me.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Several area legislators met recently with Minnesota Vikings vice president Lester Bagley to discuss the team’s efforts to get a new stadium. The Vikings currently play their home games at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, but their lease on the 30-year old facility expires at the end of the current season.

The plan being put forth calls for a new stadium at the Ramsey County location of Arden Hills, on land currently owned by the U.S. Army. The site where, years ago, ammunition used to be manufactured is comprised of 2,800 acres. The stadium plan, however, would only purchase and utilize 430 of those acres. Of that total, 260 acres would be used for the actual stadium and parking lots, with the other 170 to be retained by the Vikings for possible future development.

“The team owners are committed to the Arden Hills site,” Bagley told us. “It’s a good location, only ten miles from the Metrodome and the same distance from both Minneapolis and St. Paul. We have

been told for years to come up with a site, a local partner, and money on the table.

The team’s latest offer is to put $407 million into the project, in addition to being responsible for the cost of any project over-runs. According to Bagley, that would make the Vikings’ contribution the third largest for a stadium in National Football League (NFL) history. The only others with larger private investment are the Cowboys’ Stadium in Dallas and the Jets’ and Giants’ stadium in New York.

Tentative plans, if the project moves forward, call for the state of Minnesota to contribute $300 million and the local partner, Ramsey County, $350 million. Estimated total cost of the project is around $1.1 billion. Commissioners in Ramsey County are calling for a one-half percent sales tax to fund their share, while funding for the state portion is still up in the air. There has been discussion of sales tax increases on sports memorabilia and satellite sports downloads, but nothing has been decided. Naming-rights for the new stadium had also been on the state’s early list of possible funding sources, but Bagley said the team wants to retain those rights.

To accommodate those things, the stadium needs to have a roof.”

It’s estimated the cost difference between an open-air stadium and one with a fixed roof is about $180 million. Adding a retractable roof would increase the cost another $30 million.

I’ve found the Vikings stadium issue to be one that holds high interest among residents. Opinions vary widely, from those who enjoy the team, want them to stay, and who would be willing to have public dollars spent on the project. Conversely, others have said they don’t care about football, they don’t care if the team leaves, and the owners should pay for their own stadium. I mention to folks that professional sports are a business, and we as a state don’t want to lose any business.

the state by players on other NFL teams when they played games in Minnesota.

However this turns out, decisions need to be made relatively soon. It’s up to Gov. Dayton whether or not to call a special session to deal with the issue. The state’s funding mechanism needs to be figured out, with many legislators saying they don’t want general fund dollars used for the project. That means new funding sources must be found, and therein lies the problem. There currently is no consensus on what those sources should be.

It was at that time that the following occurred to me: Who is making this decision to narrow my life because of my age?

Why, me, of course.

Who’s in charge of changing that?

Who do you think?

What is the point of living our lives with dreams un–tried? Notice I didn’t say with dreams unfulfilled. What we hope for - may never happen. But in our eighties or nineties, we certainly don’t want to look back and think - I wish I had written that novel. I wish I hadn’t lived my life in an unhappy marriage. I wish I had moved away from my parents . . . or nearer to them. Taking desired roads may not have made our life better, but not giving them a try will always make us wonder what might have been.

And so, I forced myself to try again, and I mean almost literally forcing my hands to move on the computer keys. I risked one more heart wrenching rejection. But this time, the rejection didn’t happen. And I built upon this renewed hope - in my fifties, I remind you.

Now I write for newspapers and

magazines and have also written a novel.

Do rejections still matter? Oy, do they ever. But as I learned from my mother after her death, I don’t want someone to go through my drawers and find an unfinished manuscript or a picture of a man with whom I wish I had spent my life.

You would think that change grows harder as we age. I want to tell you something incredibly important. In many ways it is just the opposite. And the reason? As we get older, mistakes matter less. It’s more important that we give our ideals their best shot. Because if we don’t, there’s less time to do something about it. And most importantly, regret is far, far worse than not trying at all.

I’ve never thanked Deb for that moment in time when she didn’t even know that she turned my life around.

The levy expires next year. If it expires the school board will likely have to cut existing programs and staff. Their future, as well as the future of our community, depends on receiving the best education possible.

Rachel’s Challenge is coming to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle Schools Sept. 20 On Tuesday, September 20, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle Schools will be hosting a Rachel’s Challenge Event.

Rachel Scott was the first person killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. Her acts of kindness and compassion coupled with the contents of her six diaries have become the foundation for one of the most life-changing school programs in America called “Rachel’s Challenge”.

During the morning, LPGE students in grades 7-12 will attend 1 of 2 assemblies. Powerful video/audio footage of Rachel’s life and the Columbine tragedy will hold students spell-bound during the one hour school presentation that motivates them to change in the way they treat others. These assemblies are followed by a separate interactive 90 minute training session involving both adult and student leaders that will teach how to sustain the momentum created by the assembly. The assembly creates the desire for change.

The training session teaches the “how to” and ensures that the positive impact will continue.

At 7:00 p.m. at the LPGE High School Auditorium, the Rachel’s Challenge speaker will conduct a powerful session with parents and community leaders. This session is similar to the assembly program and ends with a specific challenge to parents and community leaders, showing them how they can reinforce the decisions their youth are making. Entertainers, politicians, sports celebrities, educators, and even two Presidents of the United States have been impacted by Rachel’s Challenge.

ence and they have proven that they will respond with positive words, attitudes, and actions.

After the assemblies, Kindness Cards will be distributed in support of Rachel’s Challenge. These Kindness Cards allow people to track and measure how one simple act of kindness can start a Chain Reaction of Kindness around the globe and touch the lives of many! By using online technology, kindness can be tracked by uniquely identified Kindness Cards, which each have a distinct ID code that enables the Kindness Card to be tracked as it travels the globe.

We are very pleased to have a new adult class called Belly Dancing for Fun and Fitness. In this class we will learn some common belly dancing techniques that are typically enjoyed in Middle Eastern society (i.e. weddings, house parties). Class will include warm-up exercises and some cultural notations. There are four sessions on Mondays starting September 19 at 5:30 p.m. in the UAS Cafeteria. There is a fee.

On Tuesday, September 20 at 7 p.m. we will be offering a free “Intro to Tech Devices” class in the UHS Media Center. Learn about mp3 players, tablets such as ipads, eReaders such as the Nook, Pocket Video Cameras such as the Flip or Kodak zi8. Learn about these devices: what they are, what they do and how to use them. If you have a device you have questions on, please feel free to bring in.

Class is free, but registration is required.

PotSpot will again be joining us this year on Thursday, October 6 in the FACS room after school from 3:15-4:45 p.m. for “It’s Movie Night!” What is a more perfect way to spend a night than to watch a funny, silly, or even scary movie? And what goes best with a movie? Popcorn of course! Everyone will want to share your popcorn when you use this fun and retro popcorn container! Projects will be returned in one week. We are very pleased to once again offer Youth Volleyball (grades 4-6) and Flag Football (grades 1-6). These activities started this last Saturday, but registration is still open and there are still four sessions left for each activity. There is a fee. At Volleyball your child will learn fundamental volleyball skills and have fun with her friends. Held in the UAS Big Gym from 10-11am. Flag Football is fall tradition, where the emphasis is on learning the fundamentals of football while we have some fun. Flag Football is held on the UAS Football field from 10-11:00 a.m.
