religious leaders, real estate broker and on and on.

These are all great and musts to have – especially for me – but one of the areas I later realized that I neglected to cover is connections to cultivate inside the workplace, which are crucial to succeeding in anyone’s career. After all, there’s a reason we call them connections. You have to connect.

That’s exactly what I did when I started my career many moons ago at Quality Park Envelope Company. My gut instinct told me that if I could figure out who I could befriend and impress with my business qualities, I would be able to move up in the organization.

Sure enough, within a couple months, I moved from the plant to the sales department.

All it took was for me to do the best I could do, make sure the assistant plant manager knew it, and latch on to a guardian angel – someone who was equally eager to escape the plant and who took me with him when he wrangled his way into sales.

I was beginning to learn the finer points of internal networking.

Networking is not a numbers game. The idea is not to see how many people you can meet; the idea is to compile a list of people you can count on.

This was my first exposure to what

I later learned was called the sausage theory. When one link moves, the other links follow. I’ve seen this play out many times over the years. When one person gets a different job in an organization or jumps to a key job at another company, they often bring a lot of their co-workers with them.

Here are some of the co-workers to get to know who can help you move up: • A best friend (or two or three).

Find a few people you can count on for support and assistance. You’ll be more productive knowing you’ve got them to talk to about work. Don’t make it a one-sided relationship, of course – be available to listen and help out your friends as necessary.

• A Human Resources rep. Get to know at least one person in your HR department so you have someone to go to with questions and concerns. You’ll be more comfortable discussing issues if you don’t walk in only when you have a problem.

• A mentor. Seek out a senior worker in your organization to go to for career advice. Let the person know you respect his or her reputation and would value any tips he or she can share. With luck, you’ll gain a sponsor who can help you move upward in your organization. I owe much of my success to my mentors.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne School Bus in 1941

In 1941, many of the roads in the rural communities were, in today’s words, either called an unimproved road or a cart-way.

The road was primarily done by those who lived on the road and were regular users of the road.

Since horses were still the most reliable method of transportation, the condition of the road was definitely not acceptable by today’s standards. Horse drawn vehicles were able to travel through potholes and slews as much as a couple of feet deep. One individual said that they kept a one-man crosscut saw on the wagon to cut through a tree that may have fallen across the trail.

One individual related his experiences during the first years of “country school.” Their farm was one mile from the school and it was closer and easier to walk through the woods to school. The depth of the snow made the trip difficult and the temperature was frequently below zero, but the rest of the kids at school arrived there experiencing the same difficulties, so it was considered a normal part of their lives. Many of my readers have similar stories.

In Krane township in Stearns county, the individual mentioned above, walked to school for the first two years.

His sister then started school and dad didn’t think she should be exposed to the cold walk to school, so he created

a “bus.”

Some of us still remember the single wagon box. It was about 4 foot wide and about 10 foot long with a solid wooden bottom and wooden sides about 16 inches high. It was placed on a wheeled wagon in the summer and on a bob-sled in the winter. It was used to haul rocks, dirt and corn during the summer months and manure, hay and straw in the winter months.

The father placed several boards from side to side across the top of the wagon box and attached hoops to the box. The hoops were then covered by canvas and a fish-house stove was put into the box for warmth. What began as a method to move his two children to school soon became a local bus, carrying up to 12 kids to school.

The differences between going from home to school today and yesteryear, is that in the past years, walking was considered the usual method of travel from place to place. Today walking has been replaced by cars, trucks, golf carts and 4-wheelers, whether we are getting mail, groceries, visiting a friend or going to school.

Although being able to ride a bus to school in the past was considered really great, today it seems to no longer be socially acceptable. Today parents have become the taxi service for their kids until they are old enough to drive to school. Driving to school for track practice---it’s OK to run at school, but not to school. Hmmm...

• A rival or challenger. You’re often in competition for top assignments.

Instead of treating it like a battle, get to know the people with the same goals and ambitions you have. You may find common ground that will help you both succeed. Competition makes you better.

• Gatekeepers. The best way to open doors is to know gatekeepers. Get to know the people who have access to executives and senior managers, and make sure they know you. This can be very important for getting through to people who can approve your ideas and help you get ahead.

Bottom line, your career can be linked with the careers of others. As your friends and mentors move up, so can you, especially if you have been a key contributor to their promotion or success.

It doesn’t matter how far down the food chain you are when you start out;

networking can pay off big time. It isn’t where you start. It’s where you finish that counts.

Just remember, there are no deadend jobs. If you build a network, you will have a bridge to wherever you want to go.

Mackay’s Moral: Working your way up is much easier if you’re networking your way up.

Two youths recognized conservation efforts The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources honored two youths for their outstanding conservation efforts during a ceremony Friday, Sept. 1, at the DNR volunteer outdoor stage at the Minnesota State Fair.

The DNR commissioner’s youth awards are given annually to an FFA student and 4-H member who have demonstrated initiative, leadership, creativity and achievement in conservation and wise use of natural and agricultural resources. This is the 26th year of the award program.

Lawrence Mettler from Burtrum, Minnesota, in Todd County, received the 4-H award, and Gunnar Frahm from Silver Bay, Minnesota, in Lake County, received the Future Farmers of America (FFA) award.

Encouraged by his teacher to pursue a project he was truly interested in, Mettler choose zebra mussels as the focus for his 4-H project. His project highlighted the fact that zebra mussels are an invasive species that cause detrimental impacts to Minnesota’s environment and economy.

Hundreds of Minnesota’s lakes are infested with zebra mussels, and they continue to spread.

plained to the audience the measures that everyone should take to prevent the further spread of zebra mussels, such as the “Clean, Drain, Dry” techniques promoted by the DNR and its partners. Mettler is in 12th grade, and hopes to someday pursue a career in natural resource management. He is the son of Randy and Margaret Mettler.

Gunnar Frahm received the Commissioner’s FFA Youth award. His FFA project included three components: development of a butterfly garden, a Chaga mushroom experiment, and a white pine study. Noticing the heavy deer browsing and low survival of tree saplings, Frahm decided to research different methods for protecting young white pines.

He worked with staff at Tettegouche State Park to set up the research project, ultimately concluding that a lanolin-based spray was the most effective and efficient method tested.

At the award ceremony, Frahm explained to the audience that he hopes his findings will help others working to restore white pines. He is enrolled at the University of Minnesota-Duluth with a strong interest in the medical field. Frahm was joined at the award ceremony by his mother, Maureen Frahm.

Obituaries Janet Strom

Janet Strom of Upsala died surrounded by her family on Monday, September 4th, 2017 at the age of 70 after a long, bravely fought battle with cancer.

An open house celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, September 16th from 11:00 am-3:00 pm at the Upsala Rec Building, located at 320 Walnut Ave., Upsala, MN 56340.

Janet was born in Little Falls, MN on August 23rd, 1947 to Marion (Anderson) and Alvin Olson of Upsala. She graduated from Upsala High School in 1965. After graduation she worked for the Upsala Co-Op Telephone Association for several years. In 1967 she moved to the Twin Cities and work for Napa for 6 years. Janet met the love of her life, Martin Strom of Swanville, and the two were married May

After the death of her mother in 1973, Janet and Martin moved back to Upsala to help care for her father and grandfather.

She had the privilege of being a stay-athome mom and baking for others for many years. Once her boys were both in school, Janet spent her days cooking at several local cafes in the Upsala area and retired as a Nutritionist from Nutrition Services at the Upsala Senior Center. After retirement Janet’s job became being an amazing grandmother to her two grandchildren.

Janet will be lovingly remembered by her husband Martin of Upsala, son Rob (Jennifer Oslund) of Long Prairie, son David of Upsala, and her two beloved grandchildren Martin and Sophia. She will also be fondly remembered by her sister Jeanne (Curt) Tepley of Swanville and her many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

She was preceded in death her parents Alvin and Marion, her infant baby sister, father-in-law Harold Strom, motherin-law Alvina (Wielenberg), and many beloved aunts and uncles.

Benjamin F. Hatfield, 39 year old resident of Burtrum MN, passed away on Wednesday, September 6, 2017.

A celebration of life service was held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at the Swanville City Park.

Ben was born in Little Falls, MN on May 30, 1978 to Curt and Lynn Hatfield.

He graduated from Swanville High School and St. Cloud State University. Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, September 15, 2017 at the Daniel Funeral Home in St. Joseph, MN for Carol Elizabeth Reischl age 78 of Holdingford. She died on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at Southview Acres Health Center in West St. Paul, MN. The Reverend Jerome Tupa, OSB will officiate. Burial will be in the Minnesota State Veteran’s Cemetery at Little Falls, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the funeral home on Friday.

Carol was born on March 7, 1939, the daughter of Joseph and Pauline (Lauermann) Reischl in St. Joseph, MN. She grew up in St. Joseph, MN and attended school there through the 8th grade. Carol then moved to St. Paul, MN where she worked as a nanny until 1961

He enjoyed all sports, especially any Minnesota teams. He also enjoyed video games, fishing, cooking, fantasy football and spending time with family. He had a very special place in his heart for his daughter, who he loved to play cribbage with and his granddaughter, who he couldn’t pass up one more Strawberry Shortcake episode. Ben truly enjoyed living on the lake, playing cards, fires and hanging out with friends.

Ben is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Naomi Hatfield of New, Ulm; granddaughter, MaLeah Pennington; parents, Curt and Lynn Hatfield of Burtrum; sisters, Jessica Hovland (Seth) of St. Anna, Kristina Biniek (Trent) of Crystal; nieces, Addisyn and Auden; nephew, Waylon and many other family and friends.

then moved to Prior Lake, MN where she was also a nanny. In 1976 she moved to Holdingford, MN and worked in St. Cloud at Fingerhut until 2001 when she retired. On February 18, 2000, when married Titus A. (Sharky) Kuklok. She continued to live in Holdingford even after Sharky died on August 25, 2004. In April of 2016, Carol moved to the Twin Cities area to be closer to her daughter Sharyl.

In addition to her parents and husband, Carol was preceded in death by her brother’s and sister’s, Renee Midas, Marcy Pfannenstein, Jeanette Johannes, Esther Reischl, Marion Wasner, Sylvester “Sonny” Reischl, and Richard Reischl.

She is survived by, her daughter, Sharyl Miller of Inver Groves Heights, MN, three grandchildren, Danielle Miller, Samantha Miller, and Stephen Miller, her brothers and sister, Arthur Reischl of Sartell, James Reischl of St. Cloud, Edmund (Mary Lou) Reischl of Eden Valley, MN, and JoAnn (Robert) Schleper of Sartell, MN, nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Doyle L. Fellbaum

Doyle L. Fellbaum, 63 year old resident of Culdrum Township, MN, passed away on Saturday, September 2, 2017. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, September 15, 2017, at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN. Burial will be at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Swanville. Arrangements are with Shelley Funeral Chapel in Swanville, MN. Doyle was born on January 13, 1954 in Little Falls, MN to Bernard and Arlysse Fellbaum. He has two older brothers and a younger sister. He started life on their farm in Swanville, MN. The family moved to San Bernardino, CA where Doyle went to school from first grade through two years of college. He studied aviation mechanics.

A Latin Tridentine Requiem Mass of Catholic Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, September 14th, at Immaculate Conception Traditional Catholic Church in St. Cloud, for Edward F. Peternell, age 105, of Albany, formerly of St. St Stephen, who died on Sunday at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany. The Rev. Brendan Hughes, CMRI will officiate. Graveside Obsequies will be held following the Mass at St. Stephen Cemetery in St. Stephen.

Visitation will be on Thursday after 9:00 AM at the Daniel Funeral Home in St. Joseph.

Edward was born April 6th, 1912, seventh of eight children to John and Gertrude (Smoley) Peternell in St. Stephen where he lived for 102 of his 105 years. He married Helen Omann on October 22nd 1940 and together they raised and are survived by eight children, John (JoAnn),

as a machinist. He spent time in Swanville, working on his cousin Steve Fellbaum’s farm. He moved to San Clemente, CA to care for his parents and he took a job at Burroughs Corporation then Unisys Corporation, developing integrated computer circuits. He took training in Medical Insurance. He then moved back to Swanville and was hired by Precision Tool Technologies where he worked many years.

Doyle had many skills and hobbies. He enjoyed playing guitar and was especially skilled at playing acoustic blues. He was a good swimmer and devoted surfer. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting. His yearly fishing trip to Canada became his favorite passion. He would take pictures and movies to document each trip.

Doyle’s survivors include his brothers, Dale and his wife Patricia and Daryl; sister, Sheryl Towle and husband Jerry.

Doyle was preceded in death by his parents.

Helen Frie (Bernie), Rosemary, Jim (Cindy), Joan Grunerud (Terry), Frank, Lucy Senstad (Mopar), and Edward, 20 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Helen, his parents, and siblings John, Frank, Joe, Andrew, Tom, Mary, Catherine, and Gertrude, daughter-in-law, Lou Ann, grandson Donnie, and granddaughter-in-law, Heidi.

As a young man, Ed played baseball, was a town constable, ran a thrashing crew, and did some trapping. His work life was spent farming and working at Franklin Mfg. Ed enjoyed family time, fishing, hunting, River Bats games, dirt track racing, card games, sawing lumber, Pioneer Days, inventing and building machines and anything having to do with scrap iron! He was repurposing long before the rest of us. He was especially proud to produce kittenball size potatoes in his garden. Ed loved his family, dogs, cats, JoJo the cockatiel, and lying in the cool grass on a Sunday afternoon. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Traditional Catholic Church, a 4-H leader, and an original member of the Albany Pioneers Club.

Water regulations discussed during meetings

The Dept. of Agriculture is conducting a series of listening sessions this fall in conjunction with the governor’s water summit meetings. One such gathering was held in St. Cloud last week, and good crowds were in attendance at both meetings.

Ag. Commissioner Dave Frederickson and his staff gave an update on the past legislative session and then fielded questions from those in attendance.

The department’s proposed nitrogen rule was probably the biggest concern of those present. An earlier map with large areas of the state, particularly in northwestern Minnesota, being in line for curtailment of nitrogen fertilizer applications in the fall, has drawn much concern. Frederickson told attendees that his department had used a map that showed how quickly elements move though soil, but that they hadn’t taken into account the many feet of nearly impervious clay underneath the topsoil in that part of the state. After taking public comment on the new proposed rule, his department will be issuing an updated map later this fall.

Another big topic of discussion was the many complaints that have come in to the state regarding a new soybean seed that is resistant to a line of pesticides known as Dicamba. The chemical has been around for many years, but a new formulation was allowed this year for use on soybeans that were resistant to the chemical. This new chemical works well on weeds that have developed a tolerance to Roundup and was used on millions of acres throughout the country this year.

Earlier this summer, complaints of possible drift and volatilization damage began coming in. Here in Minnesota, well over 200 were reported to the Department of Ag. They are investigating the complaints, Frederickson said, adding that changes may be forthcoming to the registration of the chemical. He

said that after harvest, when actual yield reports become available, they will decide what to do in regard to the label registration for next year.

An unscientific poll taken at the State Fair has generated several comments from folks in the district.

Two items that stood out to me were the majority of respondents saying they favored not only the lawful use of recreational marijuana, but also a sizable increase in the state’s motor fuel tax.

First, by way of explanation, the poll was taken by 7,122 folks who attended the State Fair and visited the Education Building. I would venture a guess that a high number of those responding were from the metro area and are not a representative cross section of all the residents of Minnesota. I say that because I would be very surprised if a majority of ALL Minnesotans feel that way. The poll, however, said that 50.6 percent of those responding said “yes” to recreational marijuana. In addition, 60.6 percent favored raising the gas tax by “at least” 10 cents per gallon, and 66 percent said that state law should be age 21 to purchase tobacco.

Our prayers to the folks affected by hurricanes. Many of us were watching coverage of the huge storms as they made land-fall in Texas and Florida. I attended a seed meeting last week and the main speaker was a farmer from Georgia. He said the eye of the storm was predicted to pass within miles of his farm on its northward path, and residents were told to expect high winds and heavy rain. In addition, they could be without electric power for up to two weeks.

Identify Your Spam For Scams

By John Young Ever wonder what life would be like without spam?

I am not talking about that gelled, kinda ham product we all know and love from our neighbors in Austin, Minnesota; I am talking about that nasty email stuff we receive every day.

Before we go much further, I want to define a few words we will be using: Spam: noun 1. Irrelevant or inappropriate messages sent on the Internet to a large number of recipients. (this is bad) 2. (Spam) trademark a canned meat product made mainly from ham. (this is good) Scam: noun informal A dishonest scheme; a fraud: an insurance scam.

Scammer: noun 1. (slang) a person who perpetrates a scam; swindler

An online survey shared that over 70% of the emails sent world wide are spam emails that contain some level of scams, sent by scammers! (See how we tied that altogether there!)

I covered this a bit earlier in the year on how to tell if an email is legitimate or

sent from a scammer trying to hack into your life. This was one of my more popular topics. I have heard from many folks that they love the idea of having some litmus tests to see if an email is legitimate, but they had a hard time following without being shown how to do these tests.

So, next Wednesday night, September 20th, 2017 at 7:00 pm Central, I will host a free, live video seminar showing you examples of over a dozen scam emails and how one can tell if they are real emails from legitimate businesses or scammers trying to take advantage of your online presence.

The incident is being reported to have taken place between 9-2-17 after 1800 hours and before 0800 hours 9-5-17. September 6, 2017: At 09:13 TCSO received a call from Scott Thomas, city of Long Prairie. Scott was calling to report a burglary that occurred at D&D Auto and Petrie’s Towing and Recovery at the address of 24345 Riverside Drive in rural Long Prairie. The burglary occurred between 2315 on 09-05-2017 and 0015 on 09-06-2017. It was reported that the suspect gained entrance to the business by breaking out the front door window. The suspect stole multiple hand tools and to-

bacco products during the burglary. The suspect also went through multiple vehicles in the parking lot. If you have information regarding this incident, please call the TCSO at 1-800-794-5733. The incident is still under investigation.

September 8, 2017: At 14:43 TCSO received a call from Pleasureland RV Center at the address of 22783 US 71 in Long Prairie. It is reported that between the dates of 08-24-2017 and 09-08-2017, a 2018 V-nose Glacier fishhouse was taken from the lot. The fishhouse is white in color and is 6.5 feet long by 12 feet long. One of the requirements is to hold a public hearing which would allow residents an opportunity to receive information on the proposed project, the environmental impact of this project as well as the potential cost impact to the residents.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to call for a public hearing on Monday, July 24, 2017 at 6:00 p.m., in council chambers for the purpose of providing residents with an opportunity to receive information on the proposed sewer rehab project, what the environmental impact the proposed sewer rehab would have as well as the potential cost of the project to the residents. The following water/wastewater/maintenance items were discussed: 1. The four year contract was received from Johnson Jet-Line for sewer jetting. The contract can be cancelled if the sewer project takes place.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the sewer jetting contract with Johnson JetLine for $3,212.73 per year plus $300 for mobilization for each trip per year for four years. Approximately 4,401 feet of sewer main will be cleaned each year.

cil that Todd County does not contract out for mowing.

3. The tractor has a seal leaking and it would cost approximately $5,000 - $6,000 to split the tractor and repair it.

4. Chico informed the council that Bill and Tom Berscheit put weights on the tractor to keep the tractor more grounded when mowing the ponds. Chico was instructed to have Bill Berscheit submit a bill to the city.

5. There is still one gate valve that needs to be repaired.

6. Chico obtained an estimate from Mick Flood to repair and paint the Fire Hall for $3,200. Brian Middendorf was contacted to also submit an estimate but he is too busy and he would only do the painting with repairs needing to be done by someone else.

7. Chico submitted a quote to replace lights at the Library to LED. There are twenty six 8’ light fixtures which would cost $67.30 per fixture and approximately $500-$600 for Bitz Electric to install them. It was the consensus of the council that they should just be replaced as they go out.

8. Chico was instructed to have more sand put in the sandbox at the playground.

Monitoring Your Teen’s Activities: Parents and Families Should Know

The teen years are a time of rapid growth, exploration, and risk taking.

Taking risks provides young people the opportunity to test their skills and abilities and discover who they are. But, some risks—such as smoking, using drugs, drinking and driving, and having unprotected sex—can have harmful and long-lasting effects on a teen’s health and well-being. Parents are a powerful influence in the lives of their teens.

When parents make a habit of knowing about their teens—what they are doing, who they are with, and where they are and setting clear expectations for behavior with regular check-ins to be sure these expectations are being met—they can reduce their teens’ risks for injury, pregnancy, and drug, alcohol, and cigarette use.

What can parents do to monitor their teens effectively? The following are some steps you can take to monitor your teen and help protect him or her from risky behaviors: • Talk with your teen about your rules and expectations, and explain the consequences for breaking the rules.

• Talk and listen to your teen often about how he or she feels and what he or she is thinking.

• Know who your teen’s friends are.

• Talk with your teen about the plans he or she has with friends, what he or she is doing after school, and where he or she will be going.

• Set expectations for when your teen will come home, and expect a call if he or she is going to be late.

• Ask whether an adult will be present when your teen is visiting a friend’s home.

• Get to know your teen’s boyfriend or girlfriend.

• Get to know the parents of your teen’s friends.

• Talk with your relatives, your neighbors, your teen’s teachers, and other adults who know your teen. Ask them to share what they observe about your teen’s behaviors, moods, or friends.

• Watch how your teen spends money.

• Keep track of how your teen

spends time online, and talk about using the Internet safely.

• Pay attention to your teen’s mood and behavior at home, and discuss any concerns you might have.

• If your teen does break a rule, enforce the consequences fairly and consistently.

As a native of Williamson, New York, Jeff began performing at weddings and cafes while still in his teens. The uniqueness of the classical guitar coupled with his professionalism enabled him to stay working over the years. As his skills grew, he gave full concerts throughout Western New York. His hard work earned him performances at the Rantucci International Guitar Festival as well as the nationally recognized Ithaca Guitar Festival.
