How to ask for a raise -By Harvey Mackay Pete walked into his boss’s office.

“Ms. Smith, I’ll be straight with you. I know the economy isn’t great, but I have three companies after me, and I would like to respectfully ask for a raise.”

After a few minutes of haggling, Ms. Smith finally agreed to a 5 percent boost. When Pete got up to leave, she asked him, “By the way, which three companies are after you?”

“The electric company, the mortgage company and the phone company.”

We all have bills to pay. Our jobs are a good way to accomplish that. But if you feel like you aren’t receiving what you deserve, you have to muster up your courage and ask for a raise. That is a conversation you need to have with your supervisor, not your co-workers. They don’t make those decisions, and you will get a reputation for being the complainer.

Instead, prove you can perform the duties of your position and work your tail off making sure you’re the best hire they ever had. Then it’s time to ask for a raise. Here are some tips that will give you at least a fighting chance: • Pick your time carefully. When you asked mom or dad for the car keys, did you hit them up when they walked in the door or wait until after they had dinner and were in a good mood? Timing is everything.

• Be prepared. Almost everyone has an annual salary and/or performance review. But it’s amazing how few people prepare for it. Get your act together and present your case in an intelligent, wellorganized manner.

• Keep records. Keep a log of your accomplishments. Make notes in your daily calendar. That way, you won’t forget anything, and you’ll have the most reliable form of proof there is: written evidence.

• Know the territory. One of the typical defenses against wage demands is, “You certainly deserve it, but we had a difficult year.” Did they? If you are a public company, check out the annual report. What are people at other

companies getting paid for your job?

• Ask for a specific number. This is the hardest one of all because people are uncomfortable selling themselves.

Put a number on the table, and make it realistic. Document overtime or special circumstances as evidence.

• Don’t threaten. Don’t bluff. Don’t be afraid to ask.

What happens if asking for a raise doesn’t work? Your short term tactics may have failed, but your long-term strategy could work. First, ask what it would take to get that raise next time.

Other things that can help include: 1. Working longer hours … not shorter. Hours in new areas. Hours that give you more responsibility and greater challenges.

2. Training. You want the opportunity to improve your skills and learn new ones. Ask about the chance to attend a seminar or convention, or take some classes.

3. Hitting the mark. You want to know what requirements you will have to meet in order to hit your salary goals.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Fall Preserving The time has arrived to get the winters supply of food in the basement. I’m sure that many of you remember trying to remove the produce from the garden before it became frozen there.

“Waste Not!!” If it was a good year, there was more garden things than the family needed. Extra food was given to anyone who may need it. Many of those that needed it didn’t plant a garden, because they didn’t want to do the cultivating and weeding.

There were also the other individuals, who felt if it was a good gardening year, they would get as much vegetables as they could use and if it was a bad year, their garden wouldn’t produce anything anyway. So why go through the hassle.

Not totally wrong!!

The potatoes, being ripe, needed to be dug before they had holes bored into them by cutworms. They were allowed to dry in sunlight a day before storage, so they would last longer in storage.

Melons, squash and pumpkins were stored in the oats bin.

Carrots were dug and stored in dry sand and kept in a cool place. It was a surprise when one went to the sand storage container and squished into a carrot that was rotten. The rest of the carrots were canned.

The canning process included tomatoes, beans, peas, potatoes and all

kinds of fruits. My grandma also canned spinach, which I thought tasted awful.

There was also canning of meat products. Some canned meat products can be purchased at the grocery store today, but in earlier times, canning was one of the best ways to preserve meat.

If it is chicken, beef, blood and liver sausage or head cheese it was good eating.

Cabbage needed to be made into sauerkraut. This process seemed to take most of a day. It needed to be shredded, placed in a crock (or in today’s world, a 5 gallon plastic pail,) canning salt added, crushed in the crock with the end of a 2X4, and tasted. If it tastes like cabbage, add more salt. If it tastes like salt, add more cabbage. When the crock is full, it can be covered with flattened cabbage leaves, covered by a plate which fully covers the cabbage or sealed with a no-leak plastic bag containing water.

You then set it aside, maybe not in the kitchen, because as the kraut processes it will give off a kraut odor which isn’t welcomed by some people.

Another task which is well remembered by those that did it, is the making of horseradish. By the way, I don’t think horses eat it. The roots are dug, washed and brushed, followed by an undesirable job of grinding it. The undesirable part was turning the crank on the old gray hand grinder. Any person near the grinder and especially the person turning the crank was exposed to an odor, which burned the eyes and nose and usually forced one to leave the room to seek relief. Talk about a sinus trip!!

After grinding, it was put in a jar with white vinegar added to it. It is used as

Fall Boat Removal

By John Roe, BBLA As we are starting the process of taking our boats off the lake for storage, we need to be prepared for the likelihood of Zebra Mussels being attached to our boats and water equipment.

If you have Zebra Mussels visible on your boat, the access inspectors will not let you remove your boat from the access area until the Zebra Mussels are removed or unless you fill out DNR General Permit 2015-003, which allows you to take your boat to your boat storage location and remove them or have them removed there. This is particularly important for residents that have pontoon boats or boats that were not on a lift this summer, as most all will have Zebra Mussels on them.

The forms are available on the Big Birch Lake Association website at bigbirchlakeassociation.org or the Facebook page for download. The access inspectors are generally there on weekends and should have copies of the forms.

The Zebra Mussels must be removed from your boat by spring or you will not be allowed to launch. You will likely be contacted by the DNR as a result of fill-

You do not need to remove Zebra Mussels from your dock, boat lift, swim raft or other water equipment as long as the above equipment is stored on your property and does not leave the lake. It is always a good practice to wait a couple of weeks after the mussels are dead, and then they will sweep or scrape off relatively easily.

Obituaries Virginia V. “Ginny” Borgerding Virginia V. “Ginny” Borgerding, age 81 of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Friday, September 7, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, September 11 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Deacon Ernie Kociemba assisting.

Inurnment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Melrose at a later date.

Virginia Verena Dufner was born October 7, 1936 in Albany, Minnesota to Jacob and Leona (Roering) Dufner. On July 19, 1958 she married Thomas “Tom” Borgerding at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin. Ginny was the caretaker of her family while her children were growing up and later did driving and visitation for social services. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Ginny enjoyed fishing, playing cards with her siblings, going to the casino, cross stitch, knitting, crocheting, and

eating her favorite snack, Cheetos. Family was very important in Ginny’s life. She loved spending time at the cabin with her family and truly adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ginny was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Valentine (Theresa) Dufner and James Dufner.

where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Speech and German. At Bemidji, she also met the love of her life, Steve Woller. They were married on December 27, 1970. She later earned her Master’s degree in English from Saint Cloud State University. Sue taught English and German for 35 years until she retired in 2005.

Sue and Steve moved to Upsala, Minnesota in 1972. They raised their sons, Jay and Scott, on the farm. Sue was a member of the Community Covenant Church.

Sue devoted countless hours to volunteering with the food shelf, teaching English to Somali students, and serving in her local church. She had a love of antiques, garage sales, and great deals, which led to selling treasures at Dust and Rust in Upsala.

She enjoyed travel, playing games, and reading, but her greatest passion was her family.

Sue is survived by her husband, Steve; sons, Jay (Heidi) of Minneapolis, MN and Scott (Amber) of Minneapolis, MN; grandchildren, Kaiya, Abrea, Parker, and Payson; brother, Robert J. (Kris) of Eden Prairie, MN, and many friends.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Robert G. and Elsie Krowech.

James “Jim” W. Becker Memorial service was held We d n e s d a y, September 12, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Prairie for James “Jim” W. Becker, 75 who passed away surrounded by his family on Saturday.

Rev. Noah Wehrspann officiated.

Jim was born on December 12, 1942 in Long Prairie to William and Holdina (Schultz) Becker. He married Jean Petersen on May 2, 1964 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Prairie. Jim was a bus driver for 45 years as well as taking on the family farm.

Jim was a friendly, hardworking person who would help anyone. He deeply loved his family, especially his grandchildren.

Jim was also a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church as well as the Men’s Club at church. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, bus driving, polka dancing and socializing with anyone. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Becker of Grey Eagle; children, John Becker of Grey Eagle, Jimmy (Wendy) Becker of Grey Eagle, and Sherrie (Jeremy) Hartigan of Sauk Center; 7 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; sisters, Emilie Klienschmidt of Long Prairie and June Boesen of Andover; aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews; extended family; and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Dale Becker; and brother in-law, Edwin Klienschmidt.

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Judith M. Carlson, age 78 of Upsala, will be 11:00 AM, Friday, September 14 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Judy died at her home on Sunday. There will be a visitation after 10:00 AM Friday at the church in Upsala. Christian Mother’s will pray the Rosary at 9:45 AM at the church in Upsala. Arrangements are being made by the Miller-Carlin Funeral Homes.

D e b r a Determan, 59 year old resident of Little Falls died Saturday, September 8 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Debra Joan Stephan was born on October 25, 1958 in Long Prairie ten minutes before her twin sister, Denise to the late Albert and Vivian (Scott) Stephan. She grew up and attended school in Long Prairie graduating with the class of 1976. She was united in marriage to Michael Duane Determan on August 4, 1977 in Milbank, South Dakota. The couple made their home in Long Prairie. Debra worked as a bakery manager for the Holiday Grocery Store in Long Prairie until the family moved to Little Falls in 1991. She cared for her son Jason for many years as his personal care attendant. Debra enjoyed sewing, quilting, embroidering, painting, flower gardens, gardening and all general arts. She enjoyed getting together with her friends at the St. Cloud Sewing Center.

She married Duane Carlson on August 21, 1965. The couple adopted five children. The couple moved off the farm to Upsala in July of 2012. She loved her husband, her kids and grandkids. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala and the St. Mary’s Christian Mothers.

She is survived by her children, Robert (Elaine) Carlson, Farmington; Lorelei (Mike Arndt) Carlson, Hudson, WI; Ron (Denise Gerads) Carlson, Upsala; Jeremy Carlson, Myrtle Beach, SC; Michael (Tamara) Carlson, Upsala; her brother and sisters; Kathy (Duane) Spandl, Grey Eagle; Eileen Kramer, Boston, MA; Ted Jr. (Judy) Kramer, Long Prairie; and grandchildren; Justin; Tyler; Paige; Brittany; Abigail; Landon; Jordan; and Keyona.

Cindy Mensen was one of the lucky winners who won tickets to the Nascar 400 at the Brickyard in Indianapolis, IN that was held Monday, Sept. 10. The race was scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 9, but it was postponed. Cindy commented, “after waiting 2.5 hours in the rain it was cancelled.” Both Stan and Cindy went down for it. They had a Meet and Greet with Chase Elliot, access to their hospitality tent, penthouse seats and got a special tour of the garage area. As they drove home they listened to the race on the radio. Cindy won the tickets through a WeFest promotion sponsored by Pepsi.

Victor and Betty Lou (Bussmann) Goebel will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 23 with mass at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Freeport, followed by an open house dinner and reception from 12-4 p.m. at the Freeport Community Center.

Dinner will be served at 12:00 p.m.

Hosting the event with them are their children and spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The couple were married September 23, 1958 at St. Mary’s Church in Melrose.

GRRL Fines Forgiveness Week Great River Regional Library is pleased to introduce Fines Forgiveness Week – a week dedicated to eliminating fines and reinstating full library use privileges.

Dear Motor Medics, There are so many new things on cars today.

How do you keep up with them all? I just bought a new car to me; a 2011 Ford Focus and it has a ton of new stuff on it that I have never heard of being that I just got out of my 1996 Olds Ciera. This car has no gas cap on it. I mean it’s not supposed to but I have a message on the dash that says “Check gas cap” so now what?

That’s our number one asked question on our radio show Under The Hood. We have great memories and see a lot of vehicles in our shop which helps. As for the new features, they are coming out of the woodwork for sure.

Your car is one of those with the new no fuel cap feature. At least you can’t lose the fuel cap. The filler tube now just has a valve and spring to seal the filler neck and if it gets dirty and damaged it can trip the light you have on now. It is very important to keep the area clean, we use a damp cloth, not soaking wet, to clean the area on a regular basis. Good luck with the new car.

The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall

by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 P.M. The pledge of allegiance was said. On roll call members present were: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Brian Lange, Dennis Westrich, Joan Olson, and Lana Bartells.

People present: Morrison County Record reporter Sheila McCoy, Don Trettel, Upsala First Response Vice President Garrett Doucette, Bill Krivanek, Mike Gilles, Mark Gilles, Sheila Christian, Mary Jane Chuba, Lynn Depa, Nancy Westbrock, Jeff Czech, Fire Chief Jay Baggenstoss, Public Works Director Frank Koopmeiners, and City Clerk/Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Lange moved to approve minutes from August 6, 2018 Regular City Council Meeting, 2nd by Olson. Motion carried unanimously.

Sheila Christian expressed her concerns about the permits for her neighbor’s Bed and Breakfast and the infringement on her property from their guests as well as free range chickens and if they are licensed to serve food and alcohol high of the Bed & Breakfast. The council directed the staff and Planning & Zoning Committee to work together to address the issues at the Air Bed & Breakfast at 120 Basswood Ave. Economic Development Specialist Reva Mische is on maternity leave and will be back in October.

While on leave, she is working on a grant for playground equipment.

Koopmeiners reported on water and sewer levels.

Council directed the mayor to work on contacting a company to fix the potholes on the city streets.

Fire Chief Jay Baggenstoss presented proposed new Standard Operating Guidelines to the Council to be reviewed. Bagganstoss stated that they need to add one more item: after 2 air bottles are used, the firefighters need to be checked by the first response team before re-entry.

Council directed the Planning & Zoning to re-work Ordinance #38; this ordinance is about establishing a Fire Department and provides rules and regulations for the Department.

Doucette explained Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018 is the first day of Fire Prevention week. The Firefighters will be hosting an open house 11

am – 3 pm with a free will donation meal.

The Fire Department is also planning a farm rescue training for October.

Doucette also stated the Fire Department was accepted to participate in a Hormell Chili Cook-off.

They will be competing against 4 other Departments across the United Sates. If they win, the Fire Department will win $10,000.00.

Along with that, Hormell will donate $20,000 to the National Fallen FF Memorial in the Department’s name.

Baggenstoss reported that Centra Sota donated grain bin rescue equipment to the UFD. First Response Team Vice President Garrett Doucette submitted their monthly report and thanked Charlie Gunderson for his 37 years of service to the City of Upsala. Upsala had the first response team in Morrison County and Charlie was a big part of that.

Bartells moved to accept the resignation of Charlie Gunderson who served on the First Response team for 37 years, 2nd by Olson. Motion carried unanimously.

Stevens reviewed the September Calendar.

Stevens explained that there is an opening for a fall intern.

She also went over the questions the Council had at their budget meeting.

Lange reported the Planning Commission approved a 10’ x 10’ porch and window replacements, discussed putting stop signs on Borgstrom Street, and worked on the speed limit ordinance.

Call for Public Hearing to Rezone the Soltis Property Marlene Soltis is requesting to rezone her property located on the corner of Highway 238 and Basswood from R-1 to Commercial. Westrich moved to hold a public hearing on October 1, 2018 at 7:30 pm to discuss the proposal to rezone Marlene Soltis’s property located on the corner of Highway 238 and Basswood from R-1 to Commercial, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Bartells reported that they will be meeting on September 18 to pull everything together and tally the numbers for Heritage Days.

Johnson reported that the Pickle Ball team will be painting lines for Pickle Ball at the Rec Building.

The safety committee met on August 30; they went through the Fire Hall and the new Maintenance Building and the Water Plant and will present their findings to the respective departments.

Speed Limits on City Streets Westrich moved to hold a public hearing on October 1, 2018 at 7:15 to consider Ordinance 59; an ordinance to lower the speed limit on city streets to 25 miles per hour, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Electronic Speed Signs Stevens explained the 2nd sign location was approved by Minnesota Department of Transportation on the south end of town on Highway 238. We are working closely with Morrison County to install the sign.

Bartells moved to hold a Public Information meeting October 1, 2018 at 7:00 pm; George Minerich with the Department of Health will be reviewing the delineations and vulnerability assessments that were created in Part I of the City’s Wellhead Protection Plan, 2nd by Olson.

Motion carried unanimously.

Contract to clean up the Fund Accounting Program and work with Stevens in developing an accounting plan.

Stevens explained that she contracted with Terri Ostermann from Minnesota Rural Water to clean up the Fund Accounting Program and work with her in developing an accounting plan. Because the City is a member of Region 5, Ostermann’s services are free.

City Council Wages Councilmember Westrich discussed raising the Council’s and Mayor’s stipend pay from $1,200 to $1,400 and $1,600 to $2,000 respectively. No action was taken.

League of Minnesota Cities Region Meeting Olson moved to allow up to four council members and one staff member to attend the LMC Regional Meeting in St. Cloud October 4, 2018 at a cost of $45.00 per person, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Johnson will talk to Region 5 to find out if there is grant money to reduce inflow and infiltration into the City’s sewer system. Stevens will talk with Minnesota Rural Water to see if they have any grants as well.

SourceWell (formerly NJPA) will be hosting their annual Region 5 meeting Wednesday, October 24, 2018 from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm in Staples. Johnson and Stevens plans to attend; Bartells will also check her calendar to see if she can go as well.

Lange moved to accept a donation from Jonah’s Arc to the City of Upsala to be put in the Heritage Days fund in the amount of $66.00, 2nd by Olson. Motion carried unanimously.

Acknowledgements To all the volunteers who helped make Heritage Days successful! It takes a lot of people with dedication and talent to make this 3-day event such a huge accomplishment.

Those of us who get our health care from Medicare, may be among the 350,000 individuals that are currently covered by a Medicare cost plan, which not only covers some of the deductibles and co-pays that are part of Medicare Coverage, but also offer several benefits not covered

Recently there have been several letters sent to those individuals with Cost Plans warning them that their particular plan will no longer exist after the end of this year. Todd County Farm Bureau Harvest Banquet The Todd County Farm Bureau will host their Annual Harvest Banquet, Thursday, September 20th at the Clarissa Ballroom.

The keynote speaker at this year’s event will be Shegitu Kebede. Originally from Ethiopia and orphaned at a young age she has known tragedy first hand. As war raged in Ethiopia, Shegita fled to neighboring Kenya where she lived in the unbearable conditions of a refugee camp. Three and a half years later she immigrated to the United States.

She is the founder and CEO of Women at the Well, International. This group is involved in setting up orphanages and giving people the life skills to lead productive lives in Ethiopia. Shegitu is a true survivor and a Woman who is making a difference in the world.

This year we are celebrating 100 years of Farm Bureau in Todd County and in Minnesota. The county Farm Bureaus were started to help educate the rural population about modern farming practices, and to this day that remains our goal.

How To Have More Time

By Christy Wright There’s one thing this year, and every year, that most of us would love to have more of. No, not money. That would be nice too, but that’s not it.

Time.

When you think about it, you can get more of almost anything you want in life. If you want more money, you can earn it. If you want more stuff, you can buy it. If you want more friends, you can find them.

Heck, even hair can be substituted with implants, wigs or extensions!

You and I and everyone else on this planet have the exact same amount of time — 24 hours a day. So, how we manage it becomes a major factor in our ability to become successful. And while success is defined differently for everyone, there are three types of people when it comes to time management: The busy person with no time Being busy isn’t a bad thing. This type of person has a lot going on! They have many wonderful responsibilities, relationships, and commitments that are important, but unfortunately, no time for anything else. As the saying goes, they’re stretched a mile wide and an inch deep. The problem comes when they don’t have any free time for rest, creativity, or strategic thinking. And because they’re busy all the time, they can only be moderately successful. Eventually, they’ll become frazzled, stressed, and exhausted.

The person who’s not busy This type of person has a ton of time, which is great for new possibilities, but they don’t have much else going on.

Most high-achieving people enjoy having several irons in the fire and would rather be slammed than slow. Having time is a good thing, but only up to a point. Not having anything going on is an indicator they’re missing out on many of the responsibilities, relationships, and commitments that would add value to their lives.

The busy person with more time The person in this group is represented by a small overlap between the two extremes. It’s the smallest section, because it’s the hardest to achieve. This person is busy with important commitments, and strategically saves time for recovery and new possibilities. Extremely successful people often fall into this category.

How do they do it?

Successful people make it into this last category because they control their time on purpose. They are proactive instead of reactive, and they manage their time and commitments instead of allowing their time and commitments to manage them. They are the most successful because they maximize their limited time by efficiently filling it with things they decide are important, and by not letting themselves become maxed out with no room to spare. They intentionally leave room in their schedule for new options and new possibilities to enter.

Make no mistake, this doesn’t happen by accident. Every decision this type of person makes is strategic. Every time they say “yes” to a commitment or no to an invitation, it’s intentional.

How can you do it?

If you want to be successful at managing your time, you must begin by carefully choosing what fills your time and what defines your version of busy. What are your most important priorities? If you establish them at the beginning of each week, you can schedule your week around these priorities.

We often plan to involve ourselves in the things we really care about when we have some time left over. That rarely happens. To ensure your time is being spent only on what’s most important to you, make these things a priority by scheduling them first. You can create even more space by cutting out some activities that aren’t as important. This is easier said than done, but when you do it, you will begin to feel like you have more time.

Lastly, once you’ve aligned your schedule with your most important priorities, you must be willing to protect it.

There will always be something more deserving of your time if you don’t intentionally put your values at the top of your priority list. September 2, 2018: At 15:14 the Todd County Sheriff’s Office investigated a vehicle rollover at the intersection of 270th St. and 335th Ave., Long Prairie. The vehicle appeared to have been traveling South on 335th Ave. traveling at a high speed and unable to make the turn. Janel Maciej later reported she was driving the vehicle and was not injured during the rollover.

September 5, 2018: At 09:48 it was reported that a vehicle had hit a mail box on County Road 48 west of highway 71.

Stearns History Museum to Screen Minnesota 13 Documentary The prohibition documentary, “Minnesota 13: From Grain to Glass,” will be shown at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 29, at the Stearns History Museum. Director Kelly Nathe will be on hand to answer questions and share stories about the film-making process.

The film explores the history of Minnesota 13, an elite moonshine pro-

duced by Stearns County farmers and sold throughout the country during Prohibition, and the modern-day attempt to resuscitate the brand. It also examines the history and lore of the corn-based whiskey through rich archival materials and interviews with the moonshiners’ descendants.

Stearns County, became interested in its bootlegging history at an early age when she came across a newspaper clipping that documented her grandfather’s arrest for making illegal whiskey. The discovery planted a seed that eventually germinated when she read “Minnesota 13: Wet Wild Prohibition Days” by longtime St. Cloud State professor Elaine Davis. Nathe and film partner, Norah Shapiro, spent two years making the documentary.
