The magic of Coach K -By Harvey Mackay

Last week, I told you about the remarkable athletic performances I witnessed at the London Olympic Games. My wife tells me that it’s a good thing that the Summer Olympics are held only every four years, or I would have to quit my day job to keep up with the events!

These athletes possess an inner drive that is foreign to most of us. Their natural talents are just a starting point. But they have a secret weapon: their coaches.

There is something much more scarce, something finer, something rarer than ability. It’s the ability to recognize ability. And Jerry Colangelo, head of USA basketball, is a genius for appointing Mike Krzyzewski, better known as Coach K, to lead the USA men’s basketball team.

There are many outstanding college and professional coaches who could have coached this crew of individual stars, but I sincerely doubt that many of them could have gotten the final results Coach K delivered. Eight years ago Argentina beat the USA for the gold medal despite the incredible array of talent from our NBA teams. Not the result that Coach K wanted to repeat.

For 40 years, I have been watching USA Olympic basketball, with terrific memories from Michael Jordan to LeBron James. The Americans have dominated the sport for decades, but the world has

closed the gap in the men’s game.

Fortunately the gap has not yet closed for USA’s fabulous women’s players.

The problem for Coach K is no one seems to understand this fact. The world and especially USA basketball fans think every game we play is over before it starts. Nothing could be further from the truth.

As a group, America unquestionably has the edge in sheer talent. We assemble a team of all-stars who command enormous professional contracts and huge endorsement deals. These eleven individual dominant players; however, must play as a team.

They play for national pride. There are no salaries involved here. All the players come together and risk injury to play for their country. They give up their summers and check their egos at the door. Money can’t buy their emotional high.

Coach K is the genius who kept them playing as a team. Truth is, I didn’t go to all eight games just to see the players. I went to marvel at the coaching. All his career Coach K has been expected to win (at Duke) and has the mental tools and strength that come with the highest expectations. He welcomes this pressure.

I had the pleasure of watching part of a closed practice. Coach K is untouchable when it comes to handling pressure and maintaining sheer unadulterated focus.

He is one of the most disciplined coaches I have ever witnessed.

Coach K was virtually emotionless from start to finish in all eight Olympic games. That is part of his DNA - no matter

if his team is ahead by 30 points or losing coming down the stretch.

Never for a moment during their quest for a gold medal did I ever think that every player who took the court was putting out less than 110%. This is a great tribute to Coach K. Without question in my mind, they would never have brought home the gold without that kind of work ethic inspired by their leader.

Another feather in Coach K’s hat was the explosive nature of Olympic team competition. You can easily have an international scene on your hands. In the USA game vs. Argentina, one of the USA players was kneed in the groin right in front of the team bench. I thought, “That’s it.

Here comes a total brawl.” Lucky is not the word to describe how we escaped a donnybrook. Once again credit Coach K. His players demonstrated total restraint from retaliating against the unsportsmanlike player.

Aleeah is welcomed home by her brother Ty and sister Faith.

Coach K told me at the celebration party that he is a better coach in 2012 than he was in 2008. He claims this is his last Olympics coaching gig. Let’s hope the next coach and all the business people out there take a page from Coach K’s playbook.

Obituaries Brenda Seanger

B r e n d a Seanger, 42, of Long Prairie, passed away on September 5, 2012, at the Centra Care Health System in Long Prairie, after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services for Brenda was held on Monday, September 10, 2012, 10:00 a.m., at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Cathoic Church in Long Prairie, with Fr. Rich Walz officiating. Interment was held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Long Prairie.

Brenda was born July 10, 1970, in Browerville to Donald and Audrey (Bills) Mollner. On December 4, 1999, she married James Seanger at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie.

Brenda was employed by Bayer Interior Woods for the past eight years. Brenda was a kind and loving person who enjoyed

spending time with family and friends.

She enjoyed spending time outdoors, fishing and hunting, especially her trips to Montana and her yearly deer hunt with her family.

Brenda is survived by her daughter, Sarah of Long Prairie, boyfriend, Donald Terwey of Long Prairie; parents, Donald and Audrey Mollner of Long Prairie; father and mother-in-law, Tom and Pat Seanger of Melrose; siblings: Kevin Mollner, Kary (Nancy) Mollner; brothers and sisters-inlaw: Toni Seanger, Eric (Jen) Seanger, Jason (Elisha) Seanger, Julie (Jeremy) Olmscheid, Niki Mollner: godchildren: Britt Seanger, Cody Mollner, Maranda Mollner and Heileigh Mollner and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Brenda is preceded in death by her husband, James in 2004, son Joshua in 2009, and brother Joseph in 2011, maternal grandfather, Herb Bills, paternal grandparents Joseph and Gertrude Mollner and uncle David Bills.

Roman M. “Romie” Forster Jr. Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Roman Medard Forster Jr., age 61 of Albany will be held 11AM Thursday, September 13, 2012 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

Father Michael Naughton O.S.B. will officiate and burial will take place in the parish cemetery following the service.

Roman died peacefully in his sleep early Sunday morning at Country Manor in Sartell. There will be a visitation from 1011AM Thursday morning at the MillerCarlin Funeral Home.

Roman M. “Romie” Forster Jr. was born October 14th, 1950 in Saint Cloud, MN to Roman J Sr. and Gertrude (Scherping) Forster. He married Bernie Funk on September 8, 1979 in New

Memorial services will be held at 7:00 pm on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home in St. Cloud for Mary Kay Kaasa, 64, of Avon who died Sunday, September 9, 2012. Rev. Doug Mullin, O.S.B. will officiate. Relatives and friends may call after 6:00 pm on Thursday evening at the funeral home in St. Cloud.

Mary Kay was born to Paul and Dolores (Dombrowski) Donais on June 17, 1948 in St. Cloud. She was currently employed in custodial services at St. John’s University for the past 19 years.

Justin H. Schulte, age 87, of Freeport, died peacefully on Thursday, September 6, 2012 surrounded by his family at the Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 10 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating.

Entombment was in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Justin Henry Schulte was born February 19, 1925 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Louis and Mary (Rohe) Schulte. He served time in Korea while in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1947.

On September 28, 1954 he married Alma Frericks at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Justin especially loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter. He also loved farming, sitting on the deck watching the crops grow, sitting in his favorite chair watching cars and farm machinery go by on the road, and listening to KASM radio station.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport, St. Joseph’s Men’s Society, Sacred Heart Catholic Aid Society, and the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050.

Harlem Ambassadors basketball team coming to Holdingford Sept. 19 Helping Hands Outreach in Holdingford will be hosting the internationally acclaimed “Harlem Ambassadors” basketball team on September 19 at 7 p.m. in the Holdingford High School gym. The Harlem Ambassadors will play against our own hometown team, the “Lake Wobe-goners,” a mix of young and “not-so-young” local leaders and hometown heroes.

The Ambassadors set themselves apart from other “Harlem” teams by working with local not-for-profit and service organizations and holding Har-

CentraCare Heart & Vascular Center offers outpatient nicotine dependence program This five-week outpatient nicotine dependence program, led by experts from the CentraCare Heart & Vascular Center at St. Cloud Hospital, is a group session with personalized treatment, a support group, medication therapy, relapse prevention and a self-help plan.

Sessions will run from 6-7:00 p.m. beginning Oct. 15 for five consecutive Mondays in the Heart Center’s third floor library. Deadline to register is Oct. 8.

Upsala Heritage Festival a great success

By Joan Olson Upsala Heritage Festival held on August 10-12, 2012 was a weekend filled with activities which included a parade, entertainment, contests, games, foods, displays, community worship service, fireworks, waffle feed, threshing show and just good times. The weekend was deemed a success with high participation at all levels.

This year was the first time for a medallion hunt. The medallion was found on the first day by Riley Morrison. He won $100.00 in Upsala Bucks. He read something in the first clue that wasn’t expected. Good going Riley.

Friday night was a free concert by Rhonda Laurie and her band “Happy Days Are Here Again. This was sponsored by the Great River Regional Library. They do so much for the community.

The Grand Marshal was the girls basketball team. They deserve to be recognized for the effort they put out, the team work and sportsmanship that is seen with this team. Way to go girls. Go Cardinals.

Contests were held and the winners were: 5K Run had 115 runners with the following as winners: 5K Male 1st place: Seth Hare, Albany, race time 17.43; 5K Female 1st place: Karie Teigen from St. Joseph, race time 19.42.

Community Builders Spotlight Business

By Robert Kutter Shawn Ehlert always had the goal of owning a restaurant business. He was motivated to buy the former Golden Eagle because it was the right place at the right time. Shipwrex Grill and Bar is located at 13218 County Road 103 near Mound Lake. According to Ehlert, the quiet country setting and a great staff make Shipwrex a unique business.

Shipwrex has one full-time and 12 part-time employees. Ehlert trains the cooks and his senior wait staff trains new employees. He likes everything about the business especially cooking and meeting customers.

Ehlert attended culinary school at St. Cloud Technical College in 1994, and previously worked at Ackies in Freeport from 1991 to 2001 and then worked as a DJ from 2003 to 2010. High Octane is the name of his DJ business which plays every Saturday night at Shipwrex.

“Things have been going great,” according to Ehlert, who has owned the

business for 18 months, and he thanks everyone in the community and his staff for their support. He hopes to continue to serve the community for many years to come. Ehlert would like feedback from customers about what they would like to see and do at Shipwrex.

The longtime name of the landmark location was changed because it was the end of an era, and Ehlert wanted a new beginning. He hopes the good food and homey atmosphere appeal to the people of the area.

Ehlert, his wife and daughter live in Albany where his wife is a secretary and pre-school teacher at Holy Family School.

Throughout the month, new cardholders and cardholders who refer them into the library system will qualify for the iPad drawing. GRRL provides public library services in Benton, Morrison, Sherburne, Stearns, Todd and Wright Counties.

“We provide a service that is modern, efficient, easy to use, and useful to people of all ages,” said Karen Pundsack, the library’s patron services coordinator. “We’re hoping the iPad drawing will encourage new people to join the system so they learn how the library can add value in their lives.”

Library cards are provided free of charge. Services are funded through county, state and federal taxes. To receive a card and qualify for the ‘get carded’ promotion, adults need to complete the get carded application form (with referral information if applicable), and provide a photo ID and proof of their current address. Children under 17 do not need a photo ID. The card is good at all 32 GRRL locations.

GRRL owns more than 950,000 items including books, DVDs, music

also has a digital library at its website (griver.org) offering eBooks and eAudiobooks. Service features some people may not know about include: • Systemwide borrowing. A user at any GRRL location has access to all 950,000 items on the system’s shelves through the online catalog. Usually, an item can be delivered to a local library within 3 days of placing a hold. “If you don’t know how this works our staff will be happy to show you,” Pundsack said.

Items can also be returned to any of the library’s locations.

• Suggest a title. The library’s website includes a “Suggest a Title” tab patrons can use to suggest the purchase of a book, DVD or CD not already on the catalog.

• Interlibrary loan. The library doesn’t purchase every requested item, but may instead conduct a nationwide search for obscure or out-of-date items.

In 2011 more than 20,000 requests were met using interlibrary loan.

• Study guides. The library has study guides (book and online) for numerous national tests such as the ACT, PSAT, and GED, and also more specialized tests such as the Medical College Admission Test and CPA exam.

• Media. Newcomers often think of the library in terms of books and are Word Search Answers from Sept. 6 surprised by the depth of the CD and DVD collections.

Many library “power users” visit every week or even more often, borrowing books, music, movies and magazines for the entire family. “Everybody needs information,” Pundsack said. “If you are planning a vacation, planting a garden, or want to learn about personal finance, the library has resources you can use.”

The iPad prize is funded by a donation from the St. Cloud Friends of the Library.

Distinguishing Between Players and Pretenders -By Dr. John C. Maxwell The year was 1972 and fans packed Munich’s Olympic Stadium to witness the completion of the men’s marathon. By the time the race’s competitors reached the stadium, they would already have run 26 miles! Spectators waited in anticipation to see which contestant would arrive first and to cheer him to the finish line.

A roar from the crowd greeted the first runner to enter the stadium— German Norbert Sudhaus. Fans shouted encouragement and applauded wildly as he began the final, grueling lap of the race. However, cheers turned to gasps as, halfway around the track, Sudhaus was tackled by security guards. As it turns out, Norbert Sudhaus was an imposter.

Wearing a blue track vest and yellow running shorts, he had snuck onto the race’s course just outside of Olympic Stadium and had tricked the crowd into thinking he was an actual contestant.

Moments later, when the real leader of the marathon (American Frank Shorter) ran into the stadium, he was dismayed to hear catcalls from the crowd. Shorter thought the boos were directed at him, oblivious that the spectators were still expressing outrage at Sudhaus’ hoax. Shorter would go on to win the marathon, and he remains the last American man to have won an Olympic gold medal in the event.

Players Versus Pretenders If you’ve ever led people, then you’ve come across followers like Norbert Sudhaus, who would rather act the part than to put in the effort needed to become a champion. These people are pretenders, and while they can sometimes masquerade as players, a keen observer can tell the two apart. For a leader, it’s important to identify the pretenders within an organization before they disrupt the team’s momentum and damage its relationships.

Pretenders look the part and talk the part, but they fall short of fulfilling the part. Here are some of the ways to distinguish between who’s a real team

player and who’s merely posturing for self-advancement.

1. Players have a servant’s mindset; pretenders have a selfish mindset.

Players do things for the benefit of others and the organization, while pretenders think only of benefitting themselves. A pretender is singly focused on outcomes that are in his or her best interest.

2. Players are mission-conscious; pretenders are position-conscious.

Players will give up a position to achieve a mission. Pretenders will give up a mission to achieve a position. For players, the progress of the mission is much more important than their own place within it, but a pretender will value his or her position more highly than just about anything else.

3. Players deliver the goods; pretenders only make promises.

A player is a team member who can be counted on to finish a task every time.

The pretender will claim the ability to do so; but in the end, he or she does not consistently execute.

4. Players are job-happy; pretenders are job-hunters Players love what they do and do it well. For them, work is fulfilling and meaningful, and they are devoted to carrying out their responsibilities with excellence. On the other hand, pretenders always see greener grass elsewhere. Since they’re constantly on the lookout to better their situation, they have no loyalty and will break commitments whenever doing so helps them to get ahead.

5. Players love to see others succeed; pretenders are only interested in their own success.

Rabbi Harold Kushner had a player’s mindset when he said, “The purpose of life is not to win. The purpose of life is to grow and to share. When you come to look back on all that you have done in life, you will get more satisfaction from the pleasure you have brought into other people’s lives than you will from the times that you outdid and defeated them.”

I think we all start out as competitors, but the goal is to grow past that mindset.

In my adult life, I have evolved from competitor, to personal achiever, to team player, and on to team-builder. A player

is happy when another member of the team succeeds because it benefits all.

The pretender sees success as a win-lose proposition, and resents it when another person “wins.”

6. Players value integrity; pretenders value image.

In navigation, the rule is that what’s under the surface should be heavier than what is above the surface. Otherwise, the ship will capsize in a storm. Integrity is similar; what’s under the surface must be greater than what is in plain sight. A player can be counted on to do the right thing, even if nobody is looking.

Contrarily, pretenders do the right thing only when being watched, and they do whatever is expedient otherwise.

Furthermore, since they focus on appearance rather than character, pretenders won’t admit fault when mistakes are made. They blame others for all of their problems instead of taking personal ownership of them.

7. Players make the hard choices; pretenders make the easy choices.

With a hard choice, the price is paid on the front end; the payoff only comes later. Such choices almost always include risk, and they usually involve the sacrifice of placing the organization above oneself too. Peter Drucker once said, “Whenever you see a successful business, someone once made a courageous decision.” Players aren’t afraid to make those decisions.

8. Players finish well; pretenders fade out.

Some people start as players, but at some point they turn into pretenders.

Why? I believe it’s because they overestimate the event and underestimate the process. They make the choice to begin, but they get tired of the work it takes to continue. Or they begin and proceed until they are confronted with the need to change. Unwilling to adjust, they begin pretending in order to get by. On the other hand, a player takes all tasks to completion.

Application: Do you have a better idea of who the players and pretenders are within your team or organization? Remember that players will always ADD to the team’s efforts. But pretenders, at least in the long run, will COST the team. Knowing the difference between the two means that you’ll count on the right person to get the job done.

September 6, 2012: At approximately 5:48 a.m. the Todd County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle fire on State 287 in Round Prairie Township. A 2002 Saturn driven by Bismar Castellon of Melrose entered the ditch after swerving to miss a deer. The heat of the engine caused a small grass fire under the vehicle. Bismar Castellon was transported by Long Prairie Ambulance to the Long Prairie Hospital for injuries suffered from the accident. The Todd County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Long Prairie Fire Department.

Upsala Library Hinckley Fire Museum Trip: Saturday, Sept. 15, leaving at 8:00 a.m. and returning at 4:30 p.m. The museum provides a record of events on Sept. 1, 1894, when a firestorm devoured Hinckley and several other small towns. The tour will visit the museum (a small portion is not handicapped accessible) and the cemetery, traveling on a coach bus.

Adults and families are welcome, but children under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult. The bus will leave from the Upsala Area School parking lot at 8:00 a.m. Registrants must ride the bus to participate in this trip. Bus and museum entry are free of charge.
