There’s nothing fake about artificial intelligence -By Harvey Mackay It seems like artificial intelligence is taking over the world, leaving many of us nontechies feeling terrified.

Yet when you stop to think about it, we all use artificial intelligence (AI) every day. When we Google something, use Siri on our smart phones or ask Alexa a question, we are using AI. Wikipedia states artificial intelligence, sometimes called machine intelligence, is intelligence demonstrated by machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence displayed by humans. Colloquially, the term “artificial intelligence” is often used to describe machines (or computers) that mimic “cognitive” functions that humans associate with the human mind, such as “learning” and “problem solving.”

Hollywood has certainly featured AI in many movies from “The Terminator” series to “Robocop” and “I, Robot.” In “Minority Report” algorithms predict who is going to commit a crime, and the person is arrested before the crime is committed.

What we want to consider is not a fictional near future of robots taking over the world but a more pressing issue of jobs. According to a McKinsey report, 400-800 million jobs worldwide could be displaced by 2030 as a result of machines.

“The bigger concern with AI is that those who do not adapt and learn how to work alongside machines might be seen as obsolete in certain sectors,” said Susan Sly, co-CEO and co-founder of RadiusAI, which was just named a Top Ten Start-up in the highly competitive Phoenix tech market.

“As companies incorporate more artificial intelligence to streamline processes, enhance customer service, and automate tasks to reduce human error, everyone must embrace the technology that is already here, improve their skills,

and learn to work in conjunction with AI and not fear it.”

AI is big business. Microsoft recently agreed to invest $1 billion in a partnership with the research group OpenAI, co-founded by Elon Musk and other wealthy Silicon Valley entrepreneurs. According to Bloomberg News, OpenAI will use Microsoft’s Azure cloud services to train and run the group’s AI software, and the two will jointly develop supercomputing technology.

Those are big players in any industry, to be sure, but how will AI benefit the rest of the business world?

According to the Harvard Business Review, 36% of executives say that their primary goal for incorporating AI is to optimize internal business operations.

84% of global business organizations believe that AI will give them a competitive advantage, says Statista.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Garden Harvesting The time had arrived. All summer we had been hoeing, cultivating, thinning and pulling weeds in the garden. Now, when we were getting very tired of that garden, it is doing what it was designed to do. PRODUCE! The garden was needed to supply the winter food supply, but there was additional work needed to get the produce from the garden to the cellar.

The kids were primarily responsible for the outdoor garden work, but the final preservation was done in the kitchen by older girls and mothers. The final canning, pickling and freezing required more specialized handling to avoid giving the family food poisoning.

The peas usually appeared earlier in the season. I spent hours shelling peas and as I think about it, grocery store frozen peas seem to be a more attractive alternative. One reader told of how her mother pickled whole pea pods as one would pickle cucumbers.

Beans were also an early producer.

They continued producing until frost, if they had adequate moisture. They needed to be picked every 3 days, offering delicious fresh additions to summer meals, with the surplus being canned, pickled, dried or frozen.

Sweet corn and tomatoes seem to mature about the same time. Although I am not aware of any recipes including both of them in the same recipe, they do taste great when served on the same plate. These items were preserved by regular methods, however, tomatoes can be dried and frozen raw, both of these methods actually enhance the tomato flavor. Green tomatoes can be fried, pickled or made into pies. The green tomato pickles are perfect when eaten with scalloped potatoes.

Melons, pumpkins and squash were usually stored whole. Melons were put in the milk-cooling tank to allow them to last longer before storage. Squash was baked and either canned or frozen to preserve. In early days pumpkins were sliced and hung by fireplace for drying.

Beets offer a sweet tasting vegetable alternative, but are frequently pickled.

We also canned and pickled beets including horseradish for enhanced flavor.

Cabbage was canned, but was usually stored in a cool place as long as possible for fresh eating. Of course, the most popular preservation method in this area is to make sour-kraut. Eaten cold or cooked as a main dish, it’s delicious. Traditionally sour-kraut was made and stored in an open stone crock.

Toward spring the kraut became a little dark colored, but it still was good tasting when cooked.

If you can keep the weeds under control and keep out the potato bugs, the potato crop will usually be much greater than the potatoes planted in the spring.

They were usually stored in a cool, dark, dry place in the cellar. When the winter ends, the potatoes will begin to sprout and become soft. When this time of the year comes, it is good to open a jar of previously canned potatoes. Potatoes canned with a slice of onion per quart create very tasty fried potatoes.

The work produced finished food for the family. They didn’t have to earn $3.00 to have $2.00 after taxes to buy food already prepared. Hope the government never figures out how to put income tax on garden produce.

Gardens are great, but when the plants are gone and the soil is tilled in the fall, it’s a great feeling. It’s like “it’s finally over!” But next spring we start all over again.

Gartner, a global research and advisory firm, says by the end of 2019 start-ups will surpass the leading giants like Google, IBM, Microsoft and Amazon in driving the AI economy. By 2020, it is expected that AI will become a more integral part of the sales process for up to 30% of companies around the world.

Artificial intelligence will transform the relationship between people and technology. Our skills and creativity will be challenged and enhanced. Real and sustainable benefits to business transformation will be the end result.

Rather than fear these bold changes, consider this: The share of jobs requiring AI has increased by 450% since 2013, according to Adobe. Investment into AI startups by venture capitalists has soared six-fold since 2000. The number of AI startups since 2000 has increased 14 times, said an article in Forbes.

AI has enormous potential to affect the profitability of companies that find appropriate ways to use it.

Statista projects that global revenues from AI for enterprise applications is forecasted to grow from $1.6 billion in 2018 to 31.2 billion in 2025, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 52.6% in this seven-year period.

Global retail spending on AI will grow to $7.3 billion a year by 2022, up from $2 billion in 2018, says Juniper Research. This is because companies will invest heavily in AI tools that will help them differentiate and improve the services they offer customers.

And here’s a statistic that merits your attention: Approximately 61% of companies with an innovation strategy are using AI to identify opportunities in data that they would have otherwise missed, according to Narrative Science.

That’s a lot of data to absorb, but I think it’s a roadmap to the future. If all those numbers haven’t convinced you that artificial intelligence is a trend to be embraced rather than feared, you might be on the road to nowhere.

Obituaries Marianne Rose Johnson

Church located just west of Upsala. One of her gifts was Christian mentoring of the young ladies around her. Marianne was happiest feeding people. She was well known for her delicious cooking and baking.

She had a God given gift of service and hospitality, as she brought many meals to others in the community. At Christmas time, she loved baking and sharing her many kinds of cookies and coffee cakes with everyone.

Marianne and Harold were super fans of their grandchildren. They did not miss any of their events and games.

Marianne is survived by her children, Bruce R. (Heather) Johnson of Upsala, Jan (Mike) Schultz of Upsala, and Brian (Erin) Johnson of Minnetonka; grandchildren, Joe (Jessica) Johnson of Upsala, Mallory Johnson of Billings, MT, Isaac Schultz of Upsala, Ethan (Maria) Schultz of Yorktown, VA, Haydn (Hannah) Johnson of Duluth, Harrison Johnson of Minneapolis, Sadie Schneider and (Austin Boe) of Minneapolis; 3 great-grandchildren, Paisley and Berkley Boe of Minneapolis and Autumn Johnson of Upsala; brother, John (Marilyn) Gerlach of Sartell; sisters, Joyce Swanson and Marlys and (John) Atkinson of Upsala and many nieces and nephews.

Marianne Rose Johnson, 83 year old resident of Upsala, MN passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at Central Minnesota Senior Care in Little Falls, MN. A funeral service was held Saturday, September 7, 2019 at Word of Life Lutheran Church in Upsala, MN with Rev. Lyle Aadahl and Rev. Wayne Hjermstad officiating. Burial took place in Gethsemane Lutheran Cemetery in Upsala, MN. Funeral arrangements were with the Shelley Funeral Chapel.

Marianne Rose (Gerlach) Johnson was born on February 11, 1936 to Harold & Rose Gerlach in Chokio, MN. The family moved to a farm in the Upsala area in 1940. Marianne grew up near Upsala with her four siblings and attended school there.

She then moved to the Twin Cities, where she worked as a nanny. Marianne returned to Upsala and married Harold Johnson on June 19, 1954. The couple moved to his family farm northwest of Upsala. They raised their 3 children and dairy farmed there until retirement, when son Bruce took over running the farm. Harold passed away in January, 2008. Marianne loved Jesus and knew her bible well. She was an active member of Word of Life Free Lutheran

On September 2, Justin passed away at his residence.

He is survived by his parents, Don and Carol Zirbes; sister Kayla (Ryan) Staley; half-sister Jodi (Jamie) Traut.

After relocating to Duluth to complete his schooling, Justin continued to enjoy the outdoors including snowboarding and skateboarding with his many friends and family.

His family is hosting a Celebration of Life at Mexico Lindo Restaurant located at 600 E. Superior St., Duluth, MN on Saturday, September 14th, 2019 from 1-4 PM. All are welcome to join as we celebrate all the memories we shared with Justin.

James Edward Peterson

James Edward Peterson, 82, of Sauk Centre, Minnesota, died September 5, 2019 after a long battle with cancer.

A celebration of life was held We d n e s d a y, September 11 at Sauk Centre United Methodist Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Ruth Gangloff officiating. Inurnment was held in Greenwood Cemetery with military honors by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard.

Jim was born May 15, 1937 to the late Edward Peterson and Vivian Coons Peterson. He graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 1955 and enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. A Coast Guard wind sock still waves proudly outside his home. Jim’s lifetime career was with the United States Postal Service from which he retired, serving as postmaster in Baudette, Bemidji, Sauk Centre and Willmar.

Jim loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman and boater. He and his wife Gail enjoyed many afternoons cruising on their pontoon through the canals and lakes near their winter home in Leesburg, Florida.

Jim was a walking encyclopedia of Sauk Centre and its history. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a positive outlook, and a generous heart. Even when he was suffering he would simply smile and say “I’m fine.”

Jim was a lifelong member of the Sauk Centre United Methodist Church. He served on multiple committees throughout the years, chaperoned mission trips and hosted weekly prayer sessions in their home.

Survivors include his wife Gail, children Jane Peterson Krupke (Jerry Edblad) and James Scott Peterson (Eric Stensberg) and their mother Mary Klas Peterson; blended family children Brenda Sarlette (Marty), Kurt Nelson (Cindy) and Patti Nelson (Bruce Riedner); 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; sisters Karen Peterson and Sue Vance (Don), brothers David Peterson (Mason ’Bud’ Noble) and Bob Peterson (Nancy).

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services, Sauk Centre.

Edna A. Boeckermann

Edna A. Boeckermann, age 88 of St. Francis, died Tuesday, September 10, 2019 surrounded by her family at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 13 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis with Rev. Jeremy Theis officiating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in St. Francis. Parish prayers will be at 4:30 p.m. followed by St. Francis Christian Mothers at 6 p.m. Thursday evening at the church.

Edna Ann Hoeschen was born August 21, 1931 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Peter and Walburga (Rueter) Hoeschen. She attended Flowing Well Country School through the eighth grade and completed ninth grade at Melrose High School. On May 13, 1952 she married Anthony Boeckermann at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. The couple farmed east of Upsala for 12 years and then moved east of St. Francis and farmed there until their retirement in 1989.

went on to teach country school for the next 10 years in Morrison County. On August 5, 1954 she married Lawrence Pelzer at St. James Catholic Church in Randall. After raising her family, she decided to pursue a teaching degree, which she attained in 1970 at St. Cloud State University. She then became a second-grade teacher at the Swanville Elementary School. She lived and believed in the motto, “We live a life by what we give.” Nothing took priority over her family, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, as she took great pride in all their accomplishments. For over 65 years of her life, she was a self-taught organist and music director in churches at Randall, Flensburg and Swanville. She was also involved in Christian Women and Mission work. On October 28, 1993, Bishop Hanus presented a Medal of Honor for her work in the music ministry for 50 years of service.

Loretta is survived by her children, Patrick (Teresa) of Long Prairie, MN, Charles (Christine), of Swanville, MN, Denise Welters of Long Prairie, MN, Paul (Charee) of Swanville, MN and Brian (Mary) of Long Prairie, MN; 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; brother, Dennis Drew of Coon Rapids, MN, and sister, Patricia Ritter of Anoka, MN. On Sunday, September 8, the Upsala First Response Team did a team building project “Cross the Creek.” The group was divided into three teams. Each team was given a crate, a roll of duct tape, six zip ties, 50 ft. of rope, two cinder blocks and one 5 foot plank. Their instructions were to get their team across the 18 ft. wide creek only using the items they were given without getting wet.

In the end, the teams figured out that if they worked together and consolidated their gear they could help each other cross the creek. The evening ended with a lot of laughter and no one fell in! Submitted by Michelle Stevens.

Diane Rohde had a successful first time bear hunt in McGregor, MN. She shot her first bear five minutes into opening morning. It weighed 175 pounds.

Dear Motor Medics, I’m a farmer who grows corn and I have now purchased a car that eats corn, well burns it anyway. I purchased a Ford Taurus with the flexfuel option, but I don’t know a thing about it. I’ve never owned a vehicle that was supposed to burn anything other than 10 percent ethanol. How does this work? Do I need to adjust something, or do I just put in whatever I feel like?

Will my fuel mileage change? I have heard all sorts of stories and I just don’t know what to believe. How about maintenance, do I need to do anything different if I use a high percentage of ethanol?

-Terry in Kalamazoo, Michigan Dear Terry, Feed that thing any amount of ethanol from zero to 85 percent and you don’t need to adjust anything.

The computer in the car automatically adjusts the fuel ration and timing to compensate for whatever you throw at it. As for mileage expect a change but take your time and play around a bit to see what gets you the best mileage for the dollars spent. Many of our listeners report they see better mileage with these cars when they use a 30 percent blend of ethanol as opposed to using 85 percent or nothing at all. As far as maintenance goes, don’t fall short on the engine oil changes. The higher ethanol content makes it even more important to stick with scheduled oil changes.

a check vehicle light. I listen at work so sometimes I miss a part when I get a customer. What is a check vehicle light?

Is it different from a check engine light and if so, could you explain it for me?

-Darla in Charleston, West Virginia Dear Darla, We did have a caller with a check vehicle light that had come on and after checking for engine codes and finding none he called us. Not all vehicles have them but ones that do use the check vehicle light for body related codes generated by the body control module.

Many systems use modules to operate them such as lighting systems, windows and locks, etc. When one of these has a malfunction, it is usually separate from anything engine related but they still want to alert you of the failure, so they have a separate light. A check vehicle light should be checked soon, a check engine light also means check soon. A flashing check engine light means check engine now! When a check engine light flashes it means the system has detected a misfire that can cause harm to the engine by dumping excess raw fuel into the combustion chamber. This fuel can wash out cylinders and cause damage to the pistons and rings and harm the catalytic convertor too.

Joseph Gessell

J o s e p h Gessell, 74 year old resident of Swanville, MN, passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2019 at Quiet Oaks Hospice in St. Augusta, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville, with Fr. Ron Dockendorf officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s parish cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM on Friday and 10 to 11 AM Saturday at the church. Christian Mothers will pray the Rosary at 4:30 PM Friday. Military Rites will be provided by the Swanville American Legion Post #313 and V.F.W. Post #6037.

Joseph Patrick Gessell was born October 17th, 1944 to Joseph Patrick, Sr. and Elizabeth Josephine (Birchem) Gessell in Little Falls, MN. He was a lifelong resident of Swanville. Joe entered the US Army when he was 17 years old and did his training at Fort Riley in Kansas. He drove school bus for local schools in Manhattan, KS. On January 9th, 1965 he married Shirley Heroux at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls, MN. Joe and Shirley made their home in Swanville and were blessed with two children, Chad and Jessica as well as four granddaughters (Elizabeth, Abigail, Lillian and Anastasia). Joe worked with his brothers in the family milling business, Gessell Feed Mill, Inc. Joe and Shirley built their first turkey barns in 1968, while Joe worked at Gessell Feed Mill, Inc until the early 70’s.

He then was involved in many businesses including Commodity trading, building modular homes and Tombstone Pizza. In 1987, Joe came back into Gessell Feed Mill after his brother Donald’s death. During this time, he oversaw Gessell Feed Mill, Viking Feeds, Homeland Feeds, Valley Egg, Viking Express Freight as well as being involved with many other family businesses. Joe enjoyed many different activities, especially those that were high adrenalin (going fast and high). Joe really enjoyed moose, deer and duck hunting. He bagged some really big

bucks in the Swanville area over the years.

He also enjoyed hunting with his father and brothers in Canada. He raced cars on the dirt track as well as racing snowmobiles over the years. Joe also got his pilot license in his younger years, and he enjoyed flying his Cessna around the state. He often provided memorable rides for his lucky passengers.

After his heart attack, Joe started flying his power parachute. He was often seen flying overhead in Swanville. In the end, his love of riding motorcycle trumped all his other hobbies. He loved riding his Harley down the highway, traveling all over the country. However, his favorite pass time was being “Papa”. He loved being with his granddaughters, playing with them, and would treat them to his made-up games (sound effects included) such as “stretch arm” through the railings, and the “butt biter”. He would give four-wheeler rides through the whispering pines! He always had a story to share with family and friends.

Joe often talked about being able to go back in time; he just wanted to sit on one of the corners in Swanville on the 4th of July in the early 1900’s, and thought it would be great to see just how cool the town had been. He made a once in a lifetime trip to Russia, often boasting of laying in Stalin’s jail cell bed. Joe was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Church. His faith grew deep as a member of the church, with him having a great devotion to Mary and the Devine Mercy.

Joe is survived by his wife, Shirley; children, Chad (Annie Kothe) and Jessica (Chad Hofmann); grandchildren, Elizabeth Gessell, Abigail Gessell (Kevin Joswiak), Lillian Jokinen and Anastasia Hofmann; brothers, John (Marge) and Frank (Helen); in-laws, Noreen Gessell, Lucy Gessell, George Heroux, Joyce Olson and Mary Lentz; many beloved nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Gessell Sr.; brothers, Donald and Richard; in-laws, Louis and Gladys Heroux, Robert Heroux, Cordy Heroux and Richard Lentz and his niece Collette (Gessell) Wilkens.

Memorials are preferred in Joe’s memory to St. Jude’s Hospital, Love a Child, Inc. or Quiet Oaks Hospice House-St Augusta.

She was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon.

Aletha is survived by her siblings, Barbara (Russ) Gretsch, of Albany, Cathy (Normand) Falcon of St. Cloud, William (Donna) Blattner of Avon, John (Lois) Blattner of Avon and Phoenix, Arizona, Mary (Jim deceased) Thelen of Albany, Steve (Lola) Blattner of Avon, Kit (Joann) Blattner of Avon, Cindy Blattner (Tom Prill) of Avon, Margie (Jim) Lehner of Albany. Upsala City September 3, 2019 Call to Order/Attendance: The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 P.M. The pledge of allegiance was said.

On roll call members present were: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Brian Lange, Dennis Westrich, Lana Bartells, and Crystal Benson.

People present: Upsala First Response Team Vice President Seth Strassberg, Public Works Director Mike Tschida, Public Works Asst. Frank Koopmeiners, Engineer Scott Hedlund, and City Clerk/Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Minutes: Benson moved to approve minutes from August 5, 2019 City Council meeting, 2nd

by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Added agenda items: Lange moved to approve the agenda as presented, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

Department Reports: Economic Development: Stevens explained that Tara was let go of her position with CEDA; they are currently looking for someone to replace her. In the interim, the staff at CEDA have stepped up to help Upsala including the president, vice president and other staff.

Joya, CEDA vice president, presented an update on what they are working on. Ron Zigler, president, has stayed in close contact with Stevens and shared the grants bulletin.

Annie, a CEDA Community and business Development Specialist, wrote a grant for playground equipment for the park.

Bartells made a motion to approve the GameTime Grant of $6952.00 with the City paying the other portion, $14,387.74, towards the playground equipment, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried

unanimously.

Fire Department Report: Fire Department minutes were presented. Heritage Days was a success. Lange explained that they are planning on doing a water rescue training on open water in September. October will be the Open House in conjunction with the First Response Team.

First Responders: The First Response Team minutes were presented. Strassberg shared they had three calls for the month. He said they didn’t make as much money at their food booth for Heritage Days; they believe it was due to the weather. Strassberg said they will be having a gun raffle; the tickets will be going out shortly. He also stated the Open House is October 6, 2019 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Maintenance Report: Tschida reported on water and sewer levels. He also reported on the discharge samples.

Tschida shared that Minnesota Rural Water was here last week to plot water and sewer lines, shut off valves, etc. for the GIS mapping. He stated they plan to start jetting the sewer lines shortly. He also shared that the computer at the water plant has been working with no glitches so far. And the tree in the park that went down will be cleaned up shortly; they will rent a wood chipper to clean up all the branches.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the September Calendar.

Stevens stated that her Notary Commission will expire in a couple of months. Lange moved to have Stevens renew her Notary Commission, 2nd by Bartells.

Planning Commission: Lange updated the Council on what the Planning & Zoning Commissioners have been working including a permit request from Jason Malisheske to build a

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, My two brothers-inlaw and I have been thinking about going into business together as a side project in the real estate world.

One of them is an architect and licensed general contractor, one has a successful painting business, and I’m a chief financial officer with a CPA background. Plus, I had a lot of construction experience as a young man.

I know you’re not a big fan of business partnerships, but how do you feel about a family business like this?

-Dan Dear Dan, Going into business with family isn’t my big concern here. I’ve said many times that partnerships are the only ships that won’t sail, and I’m a firm believer in that philosophy. I would encourage you guys to set up a situation where one of you is the owner, then figure out a plan where the other guys get paid off the bottom line—as if they were owners.

Trust me, anything with three heads is going to end up being a monster at some point.

Here’s the thing about family businesses. When everyone understands their role and has the best interest of the company in mind, family businesses can be a lot more fun and more successful than non-family businesses. Statistics show the average family business lasts 60 years, while the average publicly-traded company lasts about 15 years.

So, there’s nothing inherently wrong with the family part of the equation. It’s the partnership aspect I’d stay away from.

Do you think renter’s insurance is a smart buy? It’s less than $12 a month, but the minimum coverage I can get is $15,000, and he probably has less than $1,000 worth of belongings there.

-Kevin Dear Kevin, I’d get renter’s insurance. My guess is it also comes with five or six figures in personal liability coverage, as well.

That’s in case he’s out on the patio with his buddies, someone slips and falls, and they decide to sue because daddy’s on the lease.

In a case like this, because there’s so little to start with, it’s not theft or fire taking the contents of the apartment that you’re worried about. It’s the liability portion of the coverage that makes it worth every penny of what you’d be paying. That alone makes it worth $10 to $12 a month just to make sure a slip-andfall doesn’t mess with your life!

Midge-borne virus causes death of wild deer in Stearns County The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has confirmed the first two cases of epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) in wild white-tailed deer in Minnesota. EHD is a viral disease that is spread by a biting insect called a midge.

“All of our neighboring states have been dealing with EHD for years,” said Lou Cornicelli, DNR wildlife research manager. “So it was always a question of when it would show up in Minnesota.”

The DNR suspects several deer in the St. Stephen area have recently died

from EHD. Tests from two of the deer were positive for EHD; other deer were too decomposed to test. The outbreak is limited to Stearns County. The disease incubates for 5-10 days, and most infected deer die within 36 hours of exhibiting symptoms.

“EHD is both naturally occurring and seasonal,” Cornicelli said. “Given our cold temperatures, we can expect to see a shortened period of infection as frost will kill both the virus and midge that carries it.”

Motor Vehicle Crash: Man swerves for deer and rolls his vehicle.

Jacob Michael Kedrowski, 23, of Bowlus, was driving his 1995 Buick Le Sabre northbound on County Road 3 when he swerved to miss a deer. His vehicle traveled across the opposing lane into the west ditch. Mr. Kedrowski attempted to correct the vehicle back onto the roadway hitting the road edge resulting in the vehicle overturning onto the roadway.

Mr. Kedrowski was able to get out of the vehicle himself. He did not seek any medical treatment.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash. Mr. Kedrowski was placed under arrest for suspected DWI and 5th degree controlled substance. He was transported to the Stearns County Jail.

Southbound County Road 3 was shut down for a short period of time while the scene was cleared.

The Minnesota Board of Animal Health confirmed EHD in two captive deer in Houston County on Sept.

5. Those cases appear unrelated to the Stearns County case. The disease first appeared in Minnesota captive deer in October 2018, when BAH confirmed it in six deer on a Goodhue County farm.

Finding multiple dead deer near a water source is typical of an EHD dieoff. Fever drives the animals to seek water, but they die from internal lesions and hemorrhages.

People who find a dead deer should report it to the nearest DNR area wildlife office. Contact information for each office is listed on the DNR website.

EHD is not a threat to humans or animals outside the deer family. Even so, people should not consume deer that appear to be sick or in poor health.
