Disappointment is a feeling that always disappoints -By Harvey Mackay One afternoon a boy was walking through a field when he came upon an apple tree.

“It sure would be nice to have an apple to eat right about now,” he thought as he stood below the tree.

The windfall apples scattered on the ground were inedible, as they’d been half eaten by whatever creatures had encountered the tree. There were a few pieces of ripe fruit hanging from some limbs, but most of these branches were just out of reach.

The boy was unable to climb the tree and unable to jump up to grab a piece of fruit. As he walked away, empty handed and hungry, he mumbled, “Stupid tree. I bet the apples aren’t any good.”

Was he disappointed in the height of the tree or in his failure to find a way to pick the apples? In either event, circumstances were beyond his control.

These days, it often feels like disappointments are everywhere. So many parts of our lives have been disrupted, and the future seems very uncertain at times. It would be simple to give up hope and just let the chips fall where they may. But don’t give in to that mindset.

Disappointment is part of life. It happens to everyone. To avoid being disappointed is to avoid being human.

The more expectations you have, the more disappointments you will encounter, especially if you go outside your comfort zone. People who expect the best are often let down the most.

Maybe it’s missing out on a promotion, losing an account or frustration with the “new normal.” Disappointments come in all sizes. Some may be small, others life-

changing. How you handle such occasions will determine how fast you are able to move on with your life and career.

Famous opera singer Beverly Sills said, “You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don’t try.”

When disappointment happens, let yourself experience the emotions. For example, I want to remember how I felt so it drives me to never feel that way again.

The important thing is not to dwell on your disappointment so long that it turns into discouragement.

Try to put a positive spin on your disappointment. I’m not a big believer in the blame game. This is a good time to have a sounding board, someone with whom you can talk things over.

Reframe your thinking and expectations. No one is perfect, so don’t set standards that you can’t meet. Examine what it will take to make you happy and feel fulfilled.

Stay optimistic. Positive thinking has no negatives. Positive thinking changes the way we behave. I firmly believe that when I am positive, it not only makes me better, but it also makes those around me better. I have found that good attitudes are contagious.

Maybe it’s a good time to take a break and regroup after being disappointed. Stress often gives a little thing a big shadow. Find your stress reliever. One of mine is sports – attending a sporting event (when we could), playing golf or swimming. I’ve been known to play tennis and run marathons too. Find your stress reliever and use it. It could be music, reading, gardening, bird-watching or even parachuting.

perspective on what went wrong. Learn from it. Can it be corrected or changed? If that is not an option, then you may have to change course and move on and learn from the experience.

You can’t let disappointment cause you to procrastinate. Procrastination robs you of the one commodity that you just can’t replace: time. It throws off schedules. It exchanges accomplishment with inaction.

Overcoming procrastination helps your todo list become your all-done list.

Don’t lose hope and allow yourself to get beaten down. Believe in yourself. Make a plan to move forward. Set a small goal or plan that you can accomplish to get the ball rolling and feel confident about yourself.

“We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret or disappointment,” said my friend, the late Jim Rohn, American entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker.

The minister of a church discovered at the last minute that he hadn’t invited a sweet older lady congregant to come to his garden party, so he called her up and asked her to come out.

“It’s no use,” she informed him. “I’ve already prayed for rain.”

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne New Threats It’s fall and they’re back! Those Asian Beetles were not here when most of us were kids.

They get on your clothes, face, windows, house and basically anywhere else. If you squash them they stink and the orange spots on the walls and clothes are not welcome.

It is especially frustrating when you have your “good” clothes on and you squash one of these creatures, causing a very noticeable orange spot. Home Defense sprayed on the outside of the house helps control them and you get a special kick when you see the gathering of dead beetles along the foundation. It is said that a small amount of liquid soap in a spray bottle mixed with water will also deter them.

As previously mentioned, these pests were introduced to our country around 1990. For many of us, these were not a part of our childhood.

We also need to look at other invasive species that have recently taken residence in our area. We now have the Zebra Mussel, which eliminates needed lake weeds and gathers in great numbers on docks and sometimes boats. We have recently become aware of Brown Crayfish, that also wipe out large lake weed beds, however they are very tasty. Eurasian Mil Foil is growing in large areas in some of our lakes. Is it possible for Mil Foil to be eliminated by Brown Crayfish and Zebra Mussels? I guess

we will have to wait and see. They are like taking a prescription that will help eliminate a specific ailment, but has some scary side effects.

Deer Ticks were not known just a few years ago, but today cause serious concern for people and pets. The lyme disease, which results from contact with Deer Ticks, causes very serious health concerns for those that were bitten. Some cases have resulted in death, elongated recovery times and permanent physical ailments.

Trees have also been introduced to killers that are new to our area. Dutch Elm Disease, a recent arrival, has virtually killed most of the mature elm trees. It came through the area about 50 years ago and is currently back eliminating the elms that are more than 3 inches in diameter. Emerald Ash Borer is a relatively new threat to our Ash trees. Oak Wilt, although it came to our country about 100 years ago, is apparent in our area.

We really have no specific information regarding the reason for the appearance of Deer Ticks, but there are several rumors regarding their recent appearance. Some say it was a government experiment gone wrong. Others blame it on the restrictions placed on burning in the spring. I remember having many wood ticks as a kid, especially while fencing, but never a Deer Tick. You gotta say that is a good thing.

Most of the newer threats to our world are caused by the humans bringing the threats and diseases from other parts of the world. From snakes in Florida to pigs in

Swanville Junior High Student of the Month

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the September Junior High Student of the Month, ninth grade student Kennedee Chuba. Kennedee is the daughter of Michael and Tracy Chuba. She enjoys singing, sports, camping, ice fishing, shooting trap and spending time with family and friends.

She has a lot of interests and isn’t sure what that will mean for the future, but her dream is to become a singer.

Kennedee has played volleyball, basketball and softball since sixth grade. She has been in band since fourth grade and most recently joined the trap team this year. Outside

Lowell C. Drager

Lowell C. Drager, 74 year old resident of Swanville, MN passed away We d n e s d a y, September 30, 2020 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, MN. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at the Swanville Lions Park Building in Swanville, MN with Rev. Bruce Miller officiating. Burial will be in Springbrook Cemetery in Swanville, MN. A visitation will be held from 4-7 P.M. on Friday at the Swanville Bible Church in Swanville and from 10-11 A.M. on Saturday at the Swanville Lions Park Building in Swanville, MN. Lowell Campbell Drager was born on April 7, 1946 to Herbert Otto Drager and Clara Mabel (Campbell) Drager in St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, Minnesota.

He was named by his Grandmother Clara (Edden) Campbell who chose his first name Lowell after her first cousin, Lowell Swindell, and his middle name Campbell after her husband’s side of the family. Lowell attended school in Swanville, graduating from Swanville High School in 1964. From sixth grade through his senior year in high school he worked evenings and weekends at the Swanville News office. At the news office he did every job from proof reading to typesetting, page composition, casting, job press, printing, paper folding and mailing.

He also worked part time in the summers at the First State Bank in Swanville as a teller. He attended four years at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, graduating from there in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Speech, Theatre and English. While in college, he worked as an office assistant in the Speech and Theatre Department under Mary Gwen Owen, the department chair. He also served as the House Manager for the department’s theatre productions during his years at Macalester.

In the fall of 1968, he began teaching at Swanville High School, where he taught for 31 years, retiring in May of 1999. He taught English, Speech and Theatre, and directed numerous school and community theatre productions. Lowell enjoyed directing theatre, collecting, gardening and traveling. He made 17 trips to London and Europe, including 13 with his mother. He was also able to travel and visit 44 of the 50 states. He was a member of the Minnesota Historical Society, the Morrison County and Todd County Historical Societies and the American Numismatic Association, as well as a life member of the National Education Association. As a member of the Swanville High School Alumni, he helped plan and organize five All-School Reunions between 1986 and 2010. He was one of the shareholders of Granny’s Cafe in Swanville and was the Cafe’s P.M. (printing man) in charge of printing menus, gift certificates, coupons, signs, etc.

Lowell is survived by his brother, Curt J. Drager; sister-in-law, Lila (Thompson) Drager; niece, Vicki Green; nephews, Steve and Scott Drager; grand-nephews, Tanner and Taylor Drager; grand-nieces,

Gladys A. Weisbrich

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Gladys Weisbrich, age 92 of Albany, was held Tuesday, October 6 at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in rural Albany.

Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Gladys died Friday, October 2, 2020 at

the St. Cloud Hospital.

Gladys was born April 20, 1928 in a farmhouse near St. Anthony, rural Albany to Edward and Mary (Buechele) Weisbrich.

She attended grade school at District 98 in St. Anthony for eight years. She graduated from Albany High School in 1945. She started working for Henry J. Blenker Hardware in 1945. After the Blenker hardware auction, she worked part time for Joe Schulzetenberg at Our Own Hardware in Freeport. She retired in 2008. Gladys was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church, St. Ann’s Society, Mother of Mercy Campus of Care Auxiliary, and Catholic United Financial for over 50 years.

Gladys is survived by 16 nieces and nephews, several great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents in 1981 and 1988, her sisters, Agnes Theiler and Adeline Sand; her brother, Clemens Weisbrich; brothers-in-law, Philip Theiler and Richard Sand, and sisters-in-law, Delores Weisbrich and Dorothy Weisbrich.

Juletta (Jill) Sabrowsky

Juletta (Jill) Sabrowsky, 82 of Albany, MN died September 22, 2020.

Juletta was born to Adolf and Olive (Lemke) Cigelske on May 6, 1938. She graduated from Albany High School in 1955. On May 12, 1962 she married Russell (Jim) Sabrowsky. Jim passed away on July 24, 2003.

She is survived by her son Greg Sabrowsky, daughter Barb (Steve) Ohmann; grandchildren Jackie (Joe) Brinker and Rachel Ohmann; great-grandchildren Rowan and Gavin; sisters Erna Radtke and Ardell (Roger) Koehn and many other relatives and friends.

She requested no funeral and a private burial.

Delores M. Klassen

Delores M. Klassen, age 86 of Melrose, died Saturday, October 3, 2020 at St. Benedict’s Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A private family service will be held with interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Delores Marie Hinnenkamp was born May 15, 1934 in Melrose, Minnesota to Bernard F. and Mary (Von Wahlde) Hinnenkamp. On July 5, 1954 she was united in marriage to Donald “Don” Klassen at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Delores worked for the Kociemba family for a number of years and at the Melrose Credit Union. Later, Delores and Don owned and operated Swany-White Bakery in Melrose until their retirement.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Christian Mothers, St. Mary’s Mission Group, and the

Burnhamville Township • August 27, 2020 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held August 27, 2020 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Mike Berscheit; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky and Treasurer Pam Throener.

Sup. Joe Muellner was absent. Dale Ehrenberg and Erv Herdering were also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of July 28, 2020 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Johnson and was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Motion passed. For correspondence the township received letters about planning and zoning, and CARES funding.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5953 through 5970: Rev. $2,041.24; R & B $23,882.20; Fire $27.49. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

A resident was present to ask for better road grading on Duckweed Drive. Also received a request for more grading on the south side of Emerald Drive. Contractor will check into it.

The clerk gave a primary election update with 69 voters coming and no issues with new routines.

The board heard an update from the Swanville Rural Fire Association meeting with no changes. We discussed the rescue squad needs for donating CARES Funding to.

The party requesting a cartway hearing came to an agreement with the neighbor before the hearing was held, so no hearing before tonight’s meeting.

There are two CARES Funding Grants available.

Sup. Berscheit made a motion to apply for the election grant with Shirley Hulinsky as the authorized representative. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed. Sup. Berscheit made a motion to apply for the CARES Grant MN. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion.

Swanville City • September 8, 2020 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, September 8, 2020. The meeting was called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Norm Carlson, Jim Molitor, and Tony Maciej. Absent: Deb Wood Minutes from the August 4, 2020 Swanville City Council meeting were reviewed. After discussion, a motion was made by Tony Maciej to approve the minutes. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by Norm Carlson to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Jody and Carol Peterson have a repayment agreement from Small Cities Development Program for remolding work done to their rental house in Swanville.

The Peterson’s have sold this house and will pay back the remaining amount due on 105 - 4th Street. After discussion it was decided the amount due is $3956.75. This amount will be added to the city’s DEEDS account.

The Mayor informed the Council the City of Swanville has received the Federal Cares Act money.

The preliminary levy for 2021 was discussed. After discussion, a motion was made by Mayor Lange to raise the general service preliminary levy $10,000.00 for 2021. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Lange passed out a preliminary budget for 2021 for the council to look over.

The dentist office is now vacant. There is an AED in the building and the office personal is wondering if the city would be interested in purchasing it. Council decided to offer $500.00 for the machine. The office spaces are available for rent in the Community Center.

Council will decide on a rental price.

There was discussion about the Planning and Zoning Committee and the decline of interest to serve on the committee. Council decided to have the Planning and Zoning meeting with the regular monthly city council meeting. Mayor Lange will see if the existing residents who serve on the committee would like to continue and to attend the council meeting for P & Z. The following claims were presented for payment.

Members of the council were furnished with a listing.

Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the claims.

Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at 7:00 p.m.

Presentation, Citizen Appeals: Mayor Rollie Johnson and Planning & Zoning Chair Don Marty teamed up to try to get an assisted living dwelling in Upsala for the last couple of years; their efforts have paid off.

Tim & Amy Jo Matros along with Scott Duffney have agreed to put an assisted living west of the townhomes on Walnut Street. They are calling it “Upsala Senior Living.” Tim, Amy Jo and Scott presented their plan to the council with the goal of opening the fall of 2021. In on the discussion was Lakewood Health Vice President Brad Anderson with the potential of adding a medical clinic, possible pharmacy, and physical therapy as well.

Department Reports: Fire Department Report: Mayor Pro-Tem said the training held last Saturday was a huge success. He stated the UFD has not heard from FEMA yet. He also appreciated everyone who purchased tickets for their raffle.

First Response Team: Doucette explained how the training Sept. 26 went and who was able to take advantage of it.

The Upsala First Response Team is hosting a raffle October 10; all tickets have been sold.

Maintenance Report: Tschida reported on water and sewer levels, and he stated discharging is in process.

Four bids were received to replace the existing lawnmower.

Westrich moved to approve the purchase of the John Deere mower from Midwest Machinery, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Tschida shared the estimate from Upsala Motors to replace the parts in the front of the plow truck.

Westrich moved to spend $1130.00 to update the front of the plow truck with new parts, 2nd by Bartells.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the October Calendar.

Planning Commission: Planning & Zoning Chair Don Marty reported no meeting was held last month, however the team is about half way through with proposals on updating the Zoning Ordinance.

Recreation Board: No meeting was held.

Unfinished Business: Sale of City Property: Stevens explained to the Council the necessary paperwork needed in order to sell the property that was awarded to Lynn Depa – including a resolution to have Mayor Rollie Johnson and Michelle Stevens as the official signers for the documents.

Bartells moved to pass resolution 10-5-2020-1 a resolution authorizing and directing conveyance of certain real estate to Lynn Depa, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

By Tom Kuehne Medicare Open Enrollment time is starting again on October 15th. It is the time for those who have a medicare plan to review or make changes to their plan. Each year there are small changes to most plans and sometimes those covered by the plans have changes to their health conditions, which may necessitate coverage changes.

This year, as in previous years, there will be many ads by insurance companies, claiming that their product is the best.

During part of the Open Enrollment period, there will be more political ads, but

after the election the ads are expected to be more numerous. There are differences in the plans offered, but since Medicare doesn’t endorse any companies or plans it is the customer’s choice as to which plan works the best for them.

Some advertisements will promote special added benefits that are not included in original Medicare. These additional benefits are common with most Medicare Advantage plans.

Local insurance agents are required to spend many hours, at their own expense, learning the rules and required procedures of Medicare, followed by additional hours learning about individual insurance company policies. The beneficiaries can obtain help with their Medicare needs locally, knowing that if they have a need for help later, there is a local person to contact.

Damage to Corn Fields: The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office reports that on 10-06-2020 their office received multiple reports of damage to corn fields in Swanville Township. The damages are believed to have occurred sometime overnight or early morning. An unknown vehicle drove into multiple corn fields off Basil Road and Baltic Road causing significant damage to the crops.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information to contact their office at 320-632-9233.

Burglary: October 1, 2020: At 11:06 a.m., the Todd County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a burglary that occurred at the Cedar Lake Storage facility off Highway 71 in Little Sauk Township, Section 35. Suspect(s) forced entry into multiple storage units. The burglaries occurred between September 19th at 0930 a.m. and September 29th at 0930 a.m.

-Corey Dear Corey, I’m glad to hear you’ve decided to get control of your money. Mutual funds are great for long-term investing, and by long-term investing I’m talking about a bare minimum of five years—preferably 10. But I wouldn’t recommend them as a way of saving up for a vehicle purchase.

The problem with mutual funds, in the type of short-term scenario you’re talking about, is they can go up, or down, in value.

I’d suggest a simple savings or money market account when it comes to stashing the money you’re saving for a newer car. They don’t pay much in terms of interest, but your money will be safe, and you won’t have the ups and downs of the stock market to worry about.

It makes my head hurt to think about that much cash flying out the window every month on something that’s dropping in value like a rock. Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2013 Lincoln MKZ. The car has only 60k miles on it and I just purchased it last month. I plan to drive it a lot more than the previous owner having put almost 3k miles on it already. Everything worked perfect when I bought the car, but this morning I had a major issue. The vehicle has a remote start which turns on the seat heaters automatically when the car is remotely started, and the outside temp is cold enough.

When I got into the car there was a heavy smell of burnt wiring. I was able to trace the smell to the front seat area and I noticed that both front seat heaters no longer function.

Seat heater issues are one of the most common vehicle accessory failures and one of the first to go. Getting in and out of the car sometimes many times a day and just the bouncing as you drive takes its toll on the heating elements in the seat.

We suspect that one of the elements has failed and shorted and that is what you smelled. It could also be the module and that could have been taken out by the heating element. New heaters are expensive and aftermarket ad on units may be a more cost friendly option if you want heaters.

a new transmission, we thought it would be ok. We rented a small U-Haul trailer to tow and we had a hitch we had never used but they had to splice into the taillights to get our trailer lights to work. After 500 miles the turn signals and taillights quit, and the dealer says $900.00 to fix due to the trailer lights. Is this possible?

- Rodney in Kalamazoo, Michigan It is very possible and about the right price for repairs. These vehicles use what is called a front integrated control module or FICM which powers the lights through its internal circuitry. This unit is made only to handle the loads of a stock vehicle. If the vehicle is going to have a trailer hitch from the factory it will have a factory light package built into the circuity.

If lights are added aftermarket, then they must have a special relay box installed to power them or the extra load will burn out the factory system. If the trailer wires were just spliced into the system, then add one of these boxes before repairs are made.
