Remember to work on keeping your memory -By Harvey Mackay American mathematician Norbert Wiener had a reputation for being a little absent-minded.

According to one story, when his family moved to a new Massachusetts home, his wife insisted on supervising every detail of the move because she couldn’t depend on Wiener to remember the important details – like their new address.

Wiener went to work on the day of the move with a piece of paper his wife had given him; on it was written his new address. During the course of the day he used the paper to work out an equation and then discarded it. At the end of the day Wiener returned home to his old address, now an empty house.

At the door he suddenly remembered that his family had moved, but he had no idea where his new home was. Spotting a little girl riding her bike down the street, he called out, “Excuse me, I’m Professor Norbert Wiener, and I’ve just moved.

Would you by any chance know what my new address is?”

The young girl replied, “Hi, Daddy!

Mom said you’d forget.”

According to Wikipedia, memory is the faculty of the mind by which information is encoded, stored and retrieved. The good news is that memory can be improved. There are many ways that you can train yourself to have a better memory.

Like every other skill, it takes practice and a commitment to improve.

Many of my friends think my memory is terrific, but they don’t know my tricks.

Like most people, I forget 50 percent of what I hear within hours, so I make a point of writing things down.

I also have a special phone dictation line at my office. I can call it 24 hours a day, seven days a week and leave all sorts of messages, letters, notes and so on. And I don’t go anywhere without my iPhone, paper and pen. I am constantly writing myself notes and leaving them where I can find them. I’ve been known to put notes on my steering wheel and dash in my car, on my office chair and phone at work. I put them on the floor by my bed so I see them when I wake up in the morning, on my bathroom mirror or

in my sink.

Name association is another arrow in my quiver. When I meet someone and want to remember their name, I associate names of other famous people with the same names and repeat them over and over to myself. Similarly, to help me with phone numbers, I think about how I can connect the number to a significant date or event. Repetition aids retention. I repeat things over and over, which helps me remember names, phone numbers and key statistics. Also I’ve learned that if I write things down enough, I will remember them.

A study by UCLA researchers found that older people can improve their brain function after just 14 days of following some simple, healthy lifestyle strategies.

Incorporating healthful food, physical activity, stress reduction and memory exercises seem to help improve cognitive function.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Electrification Looking back, all that can be said is “wow”. When electricity came to the farm, life really changed.

Suddenly there was light in areas that were previously rather dark or at least dim.

That under the home roof storage area that we had previously only been able to see with a lantern or dim flash-light, was now much brighter. We knew that there were a few rodents up there, but the new light exposed droppings and mess that we were now able to see. There is that old, forgotten pair of farm boots that hadn’t been examined in years. It appears that the wood-mice had next winters supply of acorns stored inside them, along with shells from last winters dining scattered on the floor behind them. We also discovered a couple of

Christmas tree decorations that were missing last Christmas.

The wood stoves on the main floor frequently puffed some smoke, which ultimately adhered to the walls and curtains. What previously looked like a clean room, now appeared dull in the bright light. The barn’s brighter light now exposed a multitude of dusty spider webs that had been previously either ignored or hidden in the dark corners.

Now it was possible to simply snap a switch and suddenly the room was many times brighter than it had ever been. No longer were the kerosene lamps carried to the other rooms for light. However, I remember a lesson learned shortly after electricity arrived. We had a small bathroom and there was about 18 inches from the sink and about 4 feet from the flush lever to the light switch. I didn’t use the bathroom sink often, but as a kid, always being in hurry, I learned that if your hand was on the flusher while the other hand was on the light switch, you would experience a real shocking experience. There were no ground fault breakers.

Up until about 10-15 years ago, it was believed that we were born with a fixed number of brain cells that eventually died out. Now scientists know that brain cells regenerate throughout our lives.

And one thing seems clear: To keep the sharpest memory you can for as long as you can, get moving. Aerobically, that is. Studies have shown that people who engage in aerobic exercise perform better cognitively and show increased brain volume. In another study, participants who exercised showed lower rates of dementia. That’s because exercise actually encourages neuron generation in the part of the brain that processes memories.

Back to the absent minded professor.

He observed to a colleague, “People attach much too much importance to memory.”

“I disagree,” said his colleague.

“Disagree with what?” asked the professor.

In a short period of time electricity was doing many of the tasks which had previously been done either by hand or with a gas motor. Remember when “running” water came out of a faucet, rather than appearing from buckets carried by “running” people. The cattle no longer required a hand pump for water. The milker was now being run by a quiet electric motor, rather than a noisy gas motor. As had been discussed in previous stories, the farmyard now was lit at night.

In the first years, the electric service was not as dependable as it is today. The periods of power outages were frequent.

They would sometimes continue for a week. Loosing electric power caused the farms to go back to the darkness

and extra duties of no-electricity time.

It seemed that if there was a wind, snow or thunder storm, we would be without electricity. It sure would be good when the “juice” came back on.

Electricity today is much more dependable than it was when it first appeared. We would find it virtually impossible to live without electricity today. As my Grandmother would say, “if they ever want to take over this country, all they have to do is cut off the electricity.” Kind-of a scary thought.

Obituaries Ray A. “Sonny” Tomsche

Ray A. “Sonny” Tomsche, age 87 of Albany, died peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, October 1, 2018 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m.

Saturday, October 6 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Julius Beckermann, O.S.B. officiating and Rev. Edward Vebelun, O.S.B. concelebrating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Seven Dolors Gathering Area in Albany. Parish prayers will be held at 4 p.m. followed by St. Joseph’s Men’s Society and the Knights of Columbus at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the Seven Dolors Gathering Area.

Ray Alois Tomsche was born August 25, 1931 in Albany Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Alois and Rose (Elfering) Tomsche. Ray was born and raised on the family farm and lived there his entire life. He was united in marriage to Karleen Thelen on May 22, 1957 at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin. Ray took over the family farm, which became a century farm in 1992, and still is in the family name to this day. Ray grew crops and operated a dairy farm with an emphasis on the conservation of the land for wildlife and land preservation for years to come.

After selling his dairy herd in 1985, Ray became a courier for DBL and Quest Diagnostics. He worked there over twenty years accumulating over 600,000 miles on his Ford Ranger truck and eventually traveled over

1 million miles.

He was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany, St. Joseph’s Men’s Society, the Knights of Columbus Father Pierz Council #3628, and spent over 20 years on the Albany Co-op Board. Ray enjoyed traveling to nearly every state. He especially loved seeing the mountains and visiting his children that lived out of state. Ray loved the outdoors where he enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially deer hunting with his sons and grandsons in Minnesota and Wyoming. He liked taking an occasional trip to the casino. Ray loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Whenever Ray was asked “How are you doing?”, his favorite response was “I’m still kicking”. And when leaving he said “Sich dich” (Behave yourself) and “Machs gut” (Be good).

Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Karleen Tomsche of Albany; children, Peter (Elizabeth) Tomsche of St. Joseph, Paul (Michelle) Tomsche of Avon, Joann Tomsche (Doug Baysore) of La Quinta, California, John (Christine) Tomsche of Marietta, Georgia, Rosann (Greg) Winn of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Michelle Tomsche of Denver, Colorado; 14 grandchildren; and sisters, Mary (Vic) Maile of Avon and Alma Gillette of St. Cloud.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Eleanor Tomsche and Martha Tomsche.

Serving as casket bearers will be Stanton Tomsche, Ryan May, Mitchell Tomsche Biley, Evan Tomsche Biley, Paul Michael Tomsche, and Jonathan Tomsche. Saturday, October 13, 2018 at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie for Donna Mae Browen who died Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to services Saturday at the church in Long Prairie.

Donna was born on March 12, 1935 in Mitchell, South Dakota. Donna married Ivan Browen in 1951 in Yankton, South Dakota.

They had eight children.

Donna lived most of her adult life in

the Burtrum area. They lived for 20 years in Superior, Wisconsin. She traveled for 18 years with her husband, Ivan, driving semi-truck.

She loved to embroider on pillowcases, play cards, shake dice and visit with family and friends.

She is survived by her children, daughterin-law Mary Browen, Audrey Browen, Raelene (Myon) Minkel, Terry (friend, Kayla Sobiech) Browen, daughter-in-law Monica Browen, Paula (LeRoy)Kiminski, Marilyn Browen, Jon (Laurie) Browen; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and greatgreat grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Donna Donovan, Dorothy (Bud) Dereks, Charleen (James) Kuehne, Sonia Browen, Audrye Morrison, Margaret Browen; and brother-inlaw, Gerald Garlock.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel Rover Donovan and Margaret Ann Donovan, her husband, Ivan in 1997; sons Donald in 1984 and Richard in 2011; sister, Eleanor Olinger; and brother, James Donovan.

James A. “Jim” Nathe

James A. “Jim” Nathe, age 78 of Greenwald, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at his home in Greenwald, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, October 1 at Saint Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Ronald Dockendorf concelebrating. Interment was in the parish cemetery. Military honors were provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

James Anthony Nathe was born April 8, 1940 in Melrose, Minnesota to Edward and Amanda (Pflipsen) Nathe. Jim served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1960 through 1966. He was united in marriage to Irene Yarke on October 9, 1965 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove. Jim took over the family farm east of Greenwald where he truly loved living. He was a member of Saint Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald. Jim enjoyed playing Old Time

Norbert J. Schneider, age 90 of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, October 1, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m.

Friday, October 5 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating, Rev. Vince Lieser concelebrating, and Deacon Ernie Kociemba assisting. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Norbert John Schneider was born April 26, 1928 in Getty Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Joseph and Rosa (Kerkering) Schneider. He was united in marriage to Mary Jane “M.J.” Schoenberg on August 29, 1950 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Norbert started the family farm and enjoyed living a simple and fulfilling life.

He loved being a farmer and truly adored his wife, children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and Catholic United Financial. Norbert’s favorite pastime was playing cards with his family and friends.

Survivors include his children, Mary (Bill) Spanier of Melrose, Deb (Roy) Denne of Avon, Gene (Molly) Schneider of Melrose, Ken (Katy Madden) Schneider of Burtrum, Amy Hiltner of Richmond, Diane (Peter) Gruber of Melrose, Dona (Dana) Buttenhoff of Maple Lake, Ruth (Al) Hoeschen of Apple Valley, Sara (Sam) Uphoff of Elk River, and Eva (Gene) Gruber of Richmond; 23

Amanda is a 2013 graduate of Sauk Rapids/Rice High School and will graduate in May with a Doctorate of Pharmacy degree from North Dakota State University.

Nathan is a 2011 graduate of Long Prairie-Grey Eagle High School and is a graduate of UMM and NDSU. They conveniently met at NDSU just before Nathan graduated.

Nathan is employed as a Regional Extension Specialist at the University of Minnesota at Moorhead.

Eric and Dana Kerfeld of Freeport are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Evelyn Jeannette Kerfeld, born on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 3:41 p.m. at the CentraCare Health-Melrose.

Evelyn weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces and measured 20 inches in length.

Grandparents are Keith and Lucy Overman of Freeport, and Ken and Sandi Kerfeld of Melrose. Great grandparents are Ervin Kerfeld of Melrose, Roger and Irene Boeckermann of Melrose, and Ed and Cheryl Overman of Freeport.

Swanville Elementary has a new Robotics class that the 4th graders started on Friday, September 28. They got to spend time with Charisse Wovington from Tech Mobile, a program supported by Central Lakes College and Source Well.

Ms. W. brought out 14 Lego kits and the students learned how to build robots like a basic Land Rover, named “Milo.” On their Chrome books, they also learned how to program their Milos to move forward and backward, as well as adjust the speed. The 4th graders will get to spend time each day for 2 weeks, building a variety of Lego robots and become creative! The Lego kits are on loan to Swanville and will be used by the other elementary classroom this fall, too. Dear Motor Medics, I have been a listener to your radio program for about ten years now and really enjoy the program. Although I am not a car lover or mechanically inclined in any form or fashion I love the entertainment of the show and have learned a thing or two about cars that has helped me out in the past. I know you are gentle with your listeners when one calls in with something that would seem stupid to most shops and that is why I decided to write you before I check with my shop in hopes that I can fix my problem on my own. I usually don’t do any car repairs myself, not even oil changes or light bulbs but last week I decided to check the fluids under the hood on my 99 Pontiac Bonneville and noticed my antifreeze was low so I added some to the little bottle on the fender. The problem is that the little bottle was for washer fluid instead of engine coolant. I have not used the washers since the fill and don’t want to go to my shop and tell them what I did.

-Robert in Sterling, Illinois Dear Robert, This happens more than you would think. On this car you can pull off the hose on the tank bottom attached to the pump and you can catch the fluid in a container. Then rinse with water and refill with washer fluid. That’s it.

were grinding. They replaced pads and rotors on the front and rear and a passenger side axle shaft at the same time. Recently the abs and traction lights have started to come on then go off while I drive. They stay on for a few minutes to several days. Is there something related to the brake job or is this some new problem that needs to be addressed and what?

-Samantha in Muncie, Indiana Dear Samantha, I don’t think that the brake work you had done six months ago is related to the problem you are having today.

The brake pads and rotors are part of the mechanical brake system while the abs/trac light is part of the electronics of the antilock brake system. On many GM cars and trucks these lights will come on in this way and it is usually a sensor that has failed or more commonly a broken wire on one of the front speed sensors.

If it is a broken wire some shops may choose to repair it instead of replacing the entire sensor which will save you money. The wires move a lot when driving so they are subject to break with age. Have your shop take a look and advise you of what is needed.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, If someone is following your plan, is it a good idea to get mortgage disability insurance during Baby Step 2?

-Craig Dear Craig, No, it is not. Mortgage disability insurance is a gimmick, and I would never recommend it to anyone.

I think I know where you’re going with this. During Baby Step 1, I encourage people to save up and set aside a beginner emergency fund of $1,000. Baby Step 2 is where you start paying off all your debts, except for your home, using the debt snowball system. A thousand dollars may not seem like a lot in savings during that time, but in the beginning it’s an attainable amount to save. Plus, it’s more than a lot of people have when they make the decision to get out of debt and gain control of their finances.

Then, after finishing Baby Step 2 you move directly in Baby Step 3 — fullyfunding your emergency fund with three to six months of expenses.

What I would recommend is having long-term disability insurance in place.

It’s fairly inexpensive, especially if you get it through your employer.

210,000 miles on it. The car needs close to $2,000 in repairs, and it’s worth $5,000. I have $40,000 in cash saved, $40,000 in investments, and I make $80,000 a year. I also have $15,000 in student loan debt, but the only other thing I owe on is my house. Should I pay to repair the car, or buy something else in the $15,000 price range?

-Brett Dear Brett, Let’s see, if you wrote a $15,000 check for a newer car and wrote a $15,000 check for the student loans, it would leave you with $10,000. I wouldn’t buy a $15,000 car in your situation. I’d buy a $10,000 car. You could probably sell the old one for around $3,000 if it needs repairs, combine that with your money and get a $13,000 car. Then, you could write a check and pay off the student loan debt.

With no car payment, no student loan payment, and a good car, you can really lean into your budget and saving money. You’d have no debt except your home, and you could rebuild your savings in a hurry. You’d be in really good financial shape in about six months. Plus, you’d have $15,000 in the bank in the meantime!

A FINA L LET TER OF TH A NKS Grief is such a funny thing – full of pain, full of quiet, full of questions; and yet so empty. Consuming your thoughts and commandeering your days, while leaving a complete void in your heart.

It is hard to believe it has already been a year since the Great Sadness. Most days, I wasn’t sure I would survive another day, a week, a month – let alone an entire year.

I had an entire year to open the sympathy cards; an entire year to send the thank you cards that I insisted I would write. And somehow an entire year has passed and those boxes remains untouched.

The Great Sadness continues to be overwhelming, shadowing my daily routine so that even activities that I used to find joyful are no longer the same. It has been a year of many firsts without Duane’s strong presence – Swanville Carnival, Courthouse, American Legion, Lions Club, community parades, church functions, running uptown, sitting around our dining room table, visits for coffee and moments on the front porch. It is difficult even to read the local papers knowing I will never again see Duane’s smiling face in the news. He always had time for everyone. People were his mission; equality was his goal. He just had so much more to do.

Yet, even in death, Duane continues to touch the lives of many with memories of his warm smile, his giving spirit and his joyful heart.

Thank you for journeying with me and my family through the Great Sadness. We couldn’t have made it through the past year without each and every one of you – you have helped lighten our heavy hearts. And not only have we survived, but we have lived, we have laughed, we have cried and we have embraced! We couldn’t ask for better neighbors – the quaint village of Swanville, the city of Little Falls and all of Morrison County. You are the best people and we sincerely express our heartfelt gratitude to you all!

Swanville City September 4, 2018 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, September 4, 2018. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Norm Carlson, Deb Wood, Tony Maciej, and Jim Molitor.

Also present: Dean Mielke, Lonny Hutchins.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held Tuesday, August 7, 2018 were reviewed. A motion was made by Deb Wood to approve the minutes as printed.

Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Tony Maciej and seconded by Deb Wood to approve the treasurer’s report.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Dean Mielke was present to discuss with council on adding a new CenturyLink telecom facilities line in the North Berkey Avenue Addition. Council received an email from CenturyLink stating it would cost $6,366.00 to put this line in. Mielke stated he would be in favor of dividing the costs with the other lots. After discussion, Mayor Lange will talk with CenturyLink to see if the cost could be lowered.

The preliminary levy certification for 2018 payable in 2019 was discussed. After discussion, Norm Carlson made a motion to raise the general services preliminary levy

$10,000.00. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. The final levy certification will be sent in December.

Mayor Lange presented to the council Resolution #18-0904 which states the Swanville American Legion Post 313 has offered to donate $2000.00 to the City of Swanville to be used toward city park expenses. Jim Molitor made a motion to accept resolution #180904 from the American Legion Post 313. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. The council thanks the American Legion for the generous donation.

Quotes were looked at and discussed regarding the purchase of a new Kubota utility vehicle with attachments. Council decided to table until more quotes are received.

The Swanville Rural Fire Association assessment form was presented to council for signature.

Norm Carlson made a motion for the Mayor and Clerk to sign the assessment form. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor. Motion carried.

There is a contract for deed business building with a delinquent utility bill. After discussion, council decided the city clerk send a notice that this bill has until the end of the month to be paid and then if unpaid the delinquent bill will be taken to the collection bureau.

Grey Eagle Community Choir

By Carol Duke The Grey Eagle Community Choir is comprised of people from Grey Eagle, Burtrum, Melrose, Freeport and surrounding areas. A group of people who just love to sing! Anyone who enjoys singing is invited to come to our first practice on Sunday, October 14 from 3:30-5:00 p.m. We practice every Sunday until our Advent Concert at St. Joseph’s Church in Grey Eagle on Sunday, December 2 at 4:00 p.m.

Practice is also held at St. Joseph Church.

Recently the Choir’s long time director Ron Grove stepped down. The Choir appreciates the years of service Ron spent with the choir to help us perform outstanding music. Bob Kutter has decided to continue the choir as Director with the help of a recently selected Board of Direc-

Jeanette Ramler

Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Jeanette O. Ramler, age 91 of Sartell, formerly of Albany will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, October 4 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Jeanette died Sunday at the St. Cloud Hospital. There will be a visitation after 10:00 AM, Thursday at the church in Albany.

Jeanette was born July 4, 1927 in Melrose to William and Mary (Walantini) Rademacher. She married Melvin Ramler on May 19, 1948 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church

in Sauk Centre. Following their marriage they lived at the family farm in Albany. Jeanette enjoyed gardening, flowers, quilting, cooking and spending time with her family. She will be sadly missed by all who loved her. She was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church.

Jeanette is survived by her children, Ken (Nancy) Ramler, Sartell; Mary Tollefsrud, Edina; Jean (Mike) Christen, Paynesville; Shirley (Jim) Studenski, Sauk Rapids; Peggy (Pete) Jansky, South Haven; Kevin (Dona) Ramler, Avon and Tim (Sherry) Ramler, Milaca. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and her brother, Richard Rademacher, Shoreview.

She is preceded by her parents, her husband, Melvin on February 19, 2013; and her brothers, Clarence Rademacher, Leander Rademacher, Lawrence Rademacher, Joseph Rademacher; and her sisters, Lenore Lenarz, Elizabeth Wensman and Lorraine KlugSylvester.

Mathew “Mattie” Gallus Jr. M a t h e w “Mattie” Gallus Jr., age 82, resident of Pequot Lakes, formerly of North Prairie passed away on Monday, October 1, 2018 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m.

Thursday, October 4, 2018 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in North Prairie.

Father Roger Klassen will officiate and Father Laurn Virnig will concelebrate and burial will be held in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Mattie was born on September 17, 1936 in Royalton to Mathias and Hedwig (Fussy) Gallus. He graduated from Royalton High School in 1954. He was a member of the Army National Guard for eight years, worked road construction and farmed.

He married Mary Ann (Karasch) Solorz

on December 28, 1967. Mattie and Mary Ann farmed and raised chickens for Gold ‘n Plump for more than 20 years. He was a member of the Bowlus American Legion, Holy Cross Catholic Church, Royalton Sportsman’s Club, Royalton school board member, Eagle’s Club member, Moose Club member, Two Rivers Township board member, and served on the Stearns Electric Round Up Committee. Mattie treasured his time hunting, fishing, bowling, polka dancing, playing 500, trips to the casino, bingo, snowmobiling, playing baseball, and was a State Fire Warden for 32 years.

He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mathew is survived by his wife Mary Ann of 50 years; children, Mike (Cathy) Solorz, Jeff (Kathy) Solorz, Lynn (Dan Huseth) Zwiener, Tammy (Troy) Bartlett, Dawn (Bob) Kemp, Mathew (Christina) Gallus III; two sisters, Ann Stang and Florence Hommerding, 24 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.

Mathew was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Jamie, son-in-law Doug, four brothers and three sisters.

September 22, 2018: At 12:51 responded to a hit and run crash that occurred on Lake St. in the City of Long Prairie. Deputies were able to locate the suspect in the City of Osakis and cited her for violations related to the incident. The incident is currently under investigation.

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz Mark 7:38-9:29: All Things Are Possible For One Who Believes

A lot happens from the end of chapter 7 to the middle of chapter 9. Jesus feeds the 4000, Pharisees demand signs, Jesus gives caution about the Pharisees and Herod, Jesus heals a blind man at Bethsaida, Peter confesses Jesus as the Christ, and then Jesus foretells his death and resurrection, Peter is rebuked, and there is the Transfiguration. All these events get skipped over in our Lectionary readings but not in the book of Mark.

Jesus and his three closest disciples return from his transfiguration to an argument.

His disciples who remained behind tried to expel a demon, something they did when they were sent out in pairs in the past, but were unsuccessful at it. The Pharisees take this as an opportunity to undermine Jesus. Chapter 8 verse 11 the Pharisees argue with Jesus over this exact matter. Why not take it up with his disciples while they are separated?

As life marches on we too experience times when Jesus seems to be off on a mountain with just a select few of his disciples.

So how do we respond when the wise of this world try to undermine our Lord and our faith?

It might be nothing other than our own minds and hearts bringing up points of contention but the argument is there. Like the disciples we can have unwavering faith in our savior but our efforts produce no results. At these times we join in with the father of the child and cry out, “I believe, help my unbelief!” In doing so we hold onto Jesus’s word’s, “All things are possible for one who believes.”

At the very end of this section Jesus gives a little bit more detail as to why the disciples’ healing of the boy did not work and he tells them, “This kind cannot be driven out by any-

thing but prayer.” Prayer is our heart, mind and mouth putting words to our faith and even our unbelief. “Lord, help us” is a prayer of both belief and help for our unbelief.

All the events that are skipped over in our reading and even the whole gospel of Mark and all of scripture are things that help us to believe that Jesus is the Christ the Son of God. Sin is what drives us to unbelief. Our own desire is to see things happen now -- or later -- rather than according to God’s will and timing. Prayer is the only action we can take with many of the demons and troubles of this world.

Are there some special words we need to use? No! Is there a certain form it should take?

No! Jesus taught his disciples a simple prayer we call the Lord’s Prayer and that is a good prayer, but prayer is having a conversation with God. In prayer we speak to God but we should also pause and listen for what God has to say in response.

Once again I cannot emphasize enough the power of God’s Word. This is the sure and forceful words God has for his people. If all we do is talk, when do we listen? After asking for help the child’s father listens and waits. God’s Word helps strengthen our faith and drive out all unbelief, for, “All things are possible for one who believes.” Usually that means waiting for God to simply respond. Amen.
