Smile, laugh and be healthy -By Harvey Mackay A friend passed along a Coca-Cola ad done by a Belgian advertising agency with the tagline, “Happiness starts with a smile.”

The commercial takes place on a cramped subway as people are boarding the train after a long day at work. Everyone is silent and keeping to themselves. It is not a joyous occasion.

Suddenly the camera focuses on a hired actor who randomly starts smiling while looking at his iPad, then begins laughing more and more. Everyone on the subway takes notice and starts smiling and laughing.

Smiling is a bonding agent. It builds bridges to other people around us. It keeps us from remaining aloof and separate from one another. It just goes to

show you that smiling and laughing are contagious.

I read in “Self” magazine that 94 percent of Americans polled said they noticed a person’s smile during a first encounter. People were less likely to notice others’ bodies or eyes.

There are so many benefits in smiling and laughing. A genuine smile and laugh increases the production of serotonin, the happy hormone, and dopamine – feel-good endorphins that slow cortisol production and diminish feelings of stress, anxiety and depression.

Years ago I saved an article from “USA TODAY” explaining that we learn in childhood how to get along with people, “people skills” such as listening, remembering names and smiling. It’s amazing how people’s moods and words are misjudged because they look too serious. A smile shows that you like yourself, you like your current place in the world and you’re happy with the people you’re interacting with.

You should commit to making others smile every day of the week. The

first Friday of October was designated World Smile Day for just that purpose.

It was created by commercial artist Harvey Ball, creator of the ubiquitous “smiley face,” who believed that all of us should devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts.

Smiling and laughing provide a workout. One smile uses more than 16 muscles. During a bout of laughter the body increases its oxygen intake, which is just as good as taking a few cleansing breathes. That’s why smiling and laughing are my favorite exercises.

Researchers in Germany instructed a group of people to laugh on demand to measure their core muscles. The data showed that laughing enhanced core muscles as much as – and sometimes more than – when those subjects did back lifts or crunches.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Dump Rakes There was a time when forage was cut with a scythe.

The long sharp curved blade, along with it’s uniquely curved handle, could be effectively implemented with simple swinging motion of the operator.

If the operator didn’t have a slipped disk, it was possible to swing the scythe all day.

An improvement to the operation was a gathering attachment attached to the handle, which would catch most of the cut tillage and create small rows for easier gathering. This made the scythe heavier and more difficult to operate for longer periods of time.

Many of us have observed the old hand hay rakes. They were made of wood, about 3 to 4 foot wide with a braced wooden handle. These machines were used to gather as much of the cut foliage as possible and create rows that were easier to gather with the fork. Another explanation of why farm families had lots of kids.

Horses began to appear on farms along with machines that were designed to be pulled by horses. A big change was the invention of a horse mower with a cycle bar powered by a drive wheel. It seems that all of the horse farm machinery was powered by the drive wheel, which when rolled on the ground, created the power to operate the machine.

The horse mower appeared and also the dump rake. This rather simple machine eliminated the need to rake by hand and survived into the day of the tractor. It consisted of two tall metal wheels, a series of metal hooked tines, which when pulled, gathered the hay in the tines. There was a seat for the operator and a metal paddle, which when pushed, caused the metal tines to

raise up, causing the hay to be placed in a supposedly neat row. Riding around on a dump rake was an improvement when compared to dragging a heavy wooden hand rake. It was faster and made the shoulders hurt less.

We, like most farms, had an old dump rake. It like many of the horse machinery had been changed so that it could be used behind a tractor. The main change was to take the horse attachments off of the hitch and add a clevis to attach it to the tractor. The horse machinery usually needed an operator on the machine, but now also needed a driver for the tractor. This could be considered as an improvement, since now there were two guys to wrap wire around the breakdown so that production could continue.

Our dump rake was primarily used to gather hay from the dips in the field which the side rake missed. However, in the late 1950’s our area experienced very dry conditions. We bought a lot of hay and when the second crop looked very thin, we cut it anyway. The side rake was not able to pick up most of the hay, so we tried the old dump rake.

Somehow I was the one selected to ride on the rake. Remember, this machine was originally created to be pulled by horses and when the tractor pulled it, it moved faster. When I pushed the lever to release the hay, the hooks would rise to release the hay, but when they had almost gone back into position the trip mechanism again caused the hooks to slam back up, causing the rake seat to be slammed very hard from the bottom side. This made riding on the rake extremely uncomfortable on the butt. I believe that was the last time the dump rake was used.

I think it was sold to be disassembled and used as a lawn ornament. Good riddance!!!

into two groups. The first group watched a 20-minute comedy video, while the second group sat in silence. Both groups were given memory recall tests before and after the 20-minute period.

The group that watched the comedy video scored much higher.

Even if you don’t have anything to laugh about, you should force yourself to laugh. This is the finding of a study done at the University of Illinois that shows how smiling can influence your mood and outlook. Researchers divided people into three groups to observe their reactions to a humorous cartoon.

The first group was asked to hold a pen in their hands. The second group was asked to put the pen between their lips, forcing a frown on their face. The third group held the pens between their teeth, forcing them to smile. Guess which group found the cartoon to be much funnier – the third group.

The publication “Bits & Pieces” surmises from the AARP article that “If you smile, you’ll find something to laugh about. If you laugh, you’ll exercise your core, take in more oxygen and feel happy…. Laugh and be well.”

At least six people have taken credit for this little poem, but it’s worth sharing

in any event.

Smiling is infectious; you catch it like the flu.

When someone smiled at me today, I started smiling, too.

I passed around the corner, and someone saw my grin, When he smiled, I realized, I’d passed it on to him.

I thought about that smile, then I realized its worth.

A single smile, just like mine, could travel round the earth.

So if you feel a smile begin, don’t leave it undetected – Let’s start an epidemic quick and get the world infected!

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

By Connie Nelson Hands of Hope Resource Center October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, not unlike all other awareness months, special emphasis is put on domestic violence information.

This is a good thing, but what about the other eleven months of the year? So far in Minnesota in 2019, there have been 14 women killed by acts of domestic violence, not to mention the families torn apart, the suicides of the abusers, the children left without a parent or parents.

This is a time for all of us to take notice of how this issue effects every one of us in one way or another.

So, what is domestic violence? Domestic violence is the use of power and control of one person in a relationship over another. It often times starts out to be very subtle and with time can grow to be a very dangerous situation for the victim as well as others. It isn’t always an intimate partner situation. As we in this area have witnessed this year, with the two domestic homicides committed by a family member. We are once again reminded that it can happen in the blink of an eye, and in our own back yard, or our own home. When these crimes happen we’re all asking why, and unfortunately that is often an answer we will never know.

What can we do as a friend, a community, or a family member if we suspect that this is happening to someone?

First and foremost when someone shares with you or even if they don’t, but you believe that something is happening, just be there for them, and if they share with

Obituaries Donna M. Ostendorf

Donna M. Lawson, Boyko, Ostendorf, age 82, of Long Prairie passed away on Sunday, September 29, 2019, at the CentraCare Nursing Home, Long Prairie, surrounded by family and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 4, 2019 at American Lutheran Church in Long Prairie. Rev. Bill Bakewicz will officiate and burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Grey Eagle. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, October 3, 2019 at Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, Stein Chapel in Long Prairie and one hour prior to the services at the church on Friday.

Donna was born August 20, 1937 to Iver and Maybelle (Ott) Lawson in Minot, ND. She grew up on the family farm in Afton Township, Ward County. Going to Frost #3 for the first 8 years of school and graduating from Minot High School and later from Minot State University with a BS Degree in Education. She taught for two years before marrying Donald Richard Boyko on June 15, 1958 and moving to Fort Riley, KS where Don was serving in the United States Army. After he was discharged, they

moved back to Minot where she continued teaching. In December of 1962 Don was killed in a motor vehicle accident. On June 6, 1966 she married Vernon Frank Ostendorf in Grey Eagle, MN where they operated the Grey Eagle Motor Co. They sold the business after 10 years and moved to Long Prairie. Donna continued teaching in the Grey Eagle and Long Prairie Public Schools until she retired in June 1999 after 41 years of teaching. Donna really loved all of her students.

Donna’s favorite past time was reading and doing puzzles, and working on crafts.

She also enjoyed decorating her house differently every month using dolls from her extensive porcelain doll collection. While in Long Prairie, Donna belonged to the Long Prairie Literary Club, the Hattitude Society and Esther Circle. She gave tours for the Christie House, was a life time member of the Historical Society, taught School Time at the Long Prairie Nursing Home and spent many hours volunteering at the Long Prairie Food Shelf. She also enjoyed having breakfast with the Birthday Club ladies. Donna was also a member of the American Lutheran Church helping out at funerals, Wednesday night suppers and wherever else she was needed. She was always there with a ready smile and a willing hand to help whoever needed help.

She loved to laugh and have a fun time with everyone. She will be missed by those who knew her.

Donna is survived by her brothers; Gerald (Janet) Lawson of Minot, Iver (Darlene) Lawson of Blaine, WA; sister, Reita (Larry) Driskell of Muscatine, IA; 8 nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and her cat, Spud.

She was preceded in death by both husbands; her parents; grandparents; aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorials are preferred to American Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, the Humane Society of your choice or the St. Joseph Cemetery perpetual care fund in Grey Eagle.

Helen M. Bugge, age 84 of Sauk Centre, formerly of Minneapolis, died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Sunday, September 29, 2019 at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, October 4 at First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Mike Carlson officiating.

A family inurnment will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

Helen Marie Schiley was born September 2, 1935 in Lily, South Dakota to John and Mary (Baisch) Schiley. She grew in up in Webster, South Dakota and graduated from Webster High School.

Helen worked at Federal Cartridge where she met the love of her life, Lee Bugge.

Arnold Gene Walther

Arnold Gene Walther, 77, of Long Prairie, passed away on September 27, 2019.

Funeral services for Arnold will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2019, 12 noon, at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Little Sauk.

Friends may begin calling the day of the funeral at 10:00 a.m., at the church. Burial will be held at Calvary Lutheran Cemetery.

Arnold was born May 28, 1942, in Westport, Minnesota, to Alfred & Florence (Hanson) Walther. On January 13, 1962, Arnold married Sharon Holm in Round Prairie. He worked various jobs over the years but spent much of his life working as an

On November 18, 1966 she married Lee in Denver, Colorado. The couple lived in Minneapolis, Anoka, Osseo, Columbia Heights, New Hope, and Sauk Centre. Helen held a variety of jobs but mainly worked at Honeywell, Litton, and eventually retired from Medtronic in 1999.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre. Helen enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, riding motorcycles, traveling, and waterskiing. She was also loved cooking, baking, canning, and most importantly, spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband, Lee Bugge; children, Mike (Nancy) Pionk, Doug (Wendy) Pionk, and Ron (Sue) Pionk; step-daughters, Sharon (Jim) Ayers and Shelley (Kevin) Heutmaker; 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Dick (Alberta) Schiley.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; son, Dan Pionk; and sisters, Marge Russel and Jean Heath.

Memorials are preferred.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Sauk Centre. excavator, where he owned his own backhoe business and worked for the Todd County Highway Department as a motor grader operator.

Arnold enjoyed cutting wood, hunting deer, traveling and camping in their camper and helping his children. They traveled around the country visiting their son Tod and his family while Tod was serving in the military.

Arnold is survived by his wife Sharon; children: Shelly (Devin) Veit, Steve (Jessica) Walther; daughter-in-law Mikyong Walther; grandchildren: Jamie (Gretchen) Dreher, Ryan (Rachel) Dreher, Jenny (Casey Homan) Dreher, Tyler (Megan) Dreher, Jake (Briana Wood) Walther, Jack (Emily) Walther, Amy Walther and T.J. Walther; 11 great grandchildren with one on the way and sister JoAnne (Bob) Helle.

He is preceded in death by his parents Alfred & Florence, son Tod, in-laws Milo & Helen Holm.

Reverend Arthur H. Hoppe

Reverend Arthur H. Hoppe, age 98, died S e p t e m b e r 26, 2019 at his residence at CentraCare in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport, Minnesota on We d n e s d a y, October 2 with The Most Reverend Donald Kettler presiding. Burial will be in Saint Patrick Cemetery in Melrose.

Arthur Herman Hoppe was born on February 26, 1921, in Melrose, Minnesota.

He was the son of Anton and Theresa (Fichtinger) Hoppe. Father Hoppe attended Saint Patrick and Saint Boniface Grade Schools and Public High School in Melrose.

His college and seminary training were at Saint John’s University, Collegeville, MN and Saint Paul Seminary, Saint Paul, MN. Father Hoppe was ordained by The Most Reverend Joseph F. Busch at the Cathedral of Saint Mary in Saint Cloud, MN on May 31, 1947. He celebrated his First Mass at the Church of Saint Patrick in Melrose on June 8, 1947.

Father Hoppe served in the following pastoral assignments: associate pastor, Assumption, Morris, July 1947-July 1950; Cathedral of St. Mary, St. Cloud, July 1950July 1951; pastor, St. Patrick, Minden, January 1955-June 1958; St. Nicholas, Belle River, June 1958-June 1961; St. John Nepomuk, Lastrup, June 1961-November 1965; St. Louis, Paynesville, November 1965-July 1971; St. Mary, Alexandria, July 1971-June 1983; St. Wendelin, Luxemburg, June 1983-July 1989; St. Rose of Lima, St. Rosa, July 1989-July 1999. Father Hoppe retired on July 1, 1999.

Melrose High School in 1970 and continued his education at Alexandria Technical College with an emphasis in Agriculture. On October 30, 1993 he was united in marriage to Veronica Miller at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alexandria.

John took over the family dairy farm five miles northwest of Melrose. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. In his younger years, John enjoyed participating in tractor pulls where he won many awards and later would take his family to watch. He loved farming with his sons, enjoyed looking at and working on old cars and trucks, and loved spending time with his family at the cabin.

Survivors include his wife, Veronica Hellermann of Melrose; four sons, Dylan, Alex, Jaden, and Austin Hellermann; sisters, Marian Goebel of Melrose and Elaine (Russ) Thom of Sauk Centre; three nephews, Jared, Aaron, and Adam; and four nieces, Jenny, Jeanne, Kari, and Kristen.

John was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Ralph Hellermann.

Assumption and Calvary Cemeteries in St. Cloud, Director of St. Cloud Bookshop, and secretary to Bishop Peter W. Bartholome from July 1951 until June 1958. He was also Dean of the Alexandria Deanery from August 1980 through June 1985, and member of the Liturgy and Music Commission from December 1969 through December 1971. After retirement, Father Hoppe presided at the Latin Mass in Flensburg from 1999-2013.

Father Hoppe’s family remembers him as a “down-to-earth” man who enjoyed simple family activities. In high school, he was the catcher on the baseball team and enjoyed following the Minnesota Twins.

For many years, he along with family and friends, enjoyed deer and pheasant hunting and the wholesome meat that resulted. Fishing the many lakes and rivers of Minnesota brought him time for quiet reflection and delicious dinners. Father Hoppe also appreciated cars with ‘zip’, as he would say, as this reduced driving time during his frequent visits to family in other parts of the country. During those visits he was always eager to be part of any family activities. His steady presence and good cheer are still cherished by the whole family.

Father Hoppe is survived by nine nieces and nephews of the Schwarzmeier family in Wisconsin and Oklahoma, and by nephew, Paul Hoppe and his family of Pennsylvania and North Carolina.

Father Hoppe was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Robert; two sisters, Rose Marie Schwarzmeier and Viola Hoppe; one niece; and two nephews.

Dear Motor Medics, My check engine light has been illuminated on my car for almost a year. When it first came on I was alarmed so I had my mechanic check it out, they said it was due to a failed catalytic convertor and that it would be expensive to fix but since it would not harm the engine I could keep driving it that way and ignore the light. After about six months the engine started to run rough so I went back, and they told me I now had several other codes that needed immediate repair otherwise severe engine damage could occur. I don’t want to spend the money on a convertor but how can I tell if something is failing if the light is already on for something else? My car is a 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix with 75k miles.

-Ellen in Madison, Wisconsin Dear Ellen, You can’t tell if the light is already on. You need to repair the issue with the convertor in addition to the other system as well. I know many shops tell their customers a failed convertor won’t hurt the engine so you can drive it but there are always side effects. In this case you can’t tell what other problems may be in the system. This car may still be covered by an eight-year 80k mile federal emissions warranty that may cover the convertor. Check with a GM dealership to see if this is so.

year the cds have not been ejecting well. Now I have three stuck in the unit and one belongs to the library. The others I basically store in the unit to save space in the console. Is there any way I can remove them myself? I have tried to use a screwdriver to open the door but can’t see much inside the unit.

- Tom in Martinsville Dear Tom, Stop! Don’t ever try to use anything to pull a cd from an in-dash unit. These units are extremely delicate and doing so can damage the unit. Even the act of pushing a cd into the unit instead of letting the unit pull it in slowly by itself can damage the delicate mechanism.

The unit may have failed just because it is aging but it may also be due to the cds used in the unit. An in-dash changer like yours is even more sensitive to cd quality than single disc players and it is extremely important to only use cds that are perfectly flat without any kind of stick-on labels; anything else is prone to getting stuck. A radio repair shop may be able to remove the disc then fix the unit, but the cost often exceeds the price of a similar replacement. You may want to check with the library for the cost of a replacement CD. -Take care, the Motor Medics For entertainment only. Motorists traveling on Minnesota roads this fall should be aware of large farm equipment transporting crops to markets, grain elevators and processing plants, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

“Harvest season is ramping up across Minnesota and farmers need the highways to access their fields and deliver crops to market,” said Brian Sorenson, state traffic engineer. “Motorists need to be prepared to encounter slow-moving farm vehicles, especially on rural, two-

lane roadways, now through November.

Farm equipment is large and heavy, making it hard for operators to accelerate, slow down or stop. The equipment also makes wide turns and can sometimes cross over the center line. These vehicles can also create large blind spots, making it difficult for operators to see approaching vehicles. All of these factors can cause serious crashes.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I’ve heard lots of different theories and recommendations when it comes to paying off debt. Why do you advise paying off debts from smallest to largest?

-Marlee Dear Marlee, A lot of people wonder the same thing when I bring up the debt snowball.

Some think paying off the debt with highest interest rate first is the best approach. This may seem to make sense mathematically, but I realized a long time ago debt is not a mathematics problem—it’s a behavior problem.

Personal finance is 80 percent behavior, and only 20 percent head knowledge.

Besides, if all those people were so great at math, they wouldn’t be up to their eyeballs in debt in the first place!

The reason the debt snowball pays off debt from smallest to largest is that modifying your behavior and providing inspiration to get out of debt is more important than the math. Your probability of becoming wealthy is more closely connected to your behavior than your financial “sophistication” or academic pedigree.

When you pay off a small debt you experience success, and that gives you hope. Then, you move on the next debt.

When you pay that one off, and you’ve wiped out two debts, it really energizes you. At that point you start to get excited, and you begin to believe in yourself and in the fact you’re actually on the road to becoming debt-free!

Dear Dave, I’m 35, and I’ve always wanted to own rental property. I think I’ve found a deal that would work for me. I want to take $20,000 out of my thrift savings account to use as a down payment on the property. I could rent the place for $1,400 a month, and my loan payment would be $1,100 a month. What do you think about this idea?

-Nathan Dear Nathan, I love real estate, so I understand the allure. But what you’re telling me is you want to cash out part of your retirement, get hit with a penalty and take on debt, to buy an investment property. I wouldn’t do it.

I’ve got a feeling you’ve never been a landlord before. Bringing in $1,400 and paying out $1,100 may seem like a good place to be, but you haven’t figured all the risk into your equation.

Rental properties just sit there empty sometimes. Other times you have renters who don’t pay, repairs, and people who just tear up things. In other words, you won’t be able to count on an easy $300 in your pocket every month.

Like I said, I totally get your fascination with real estate. But my advice is to save up, and pay cash for one decent rental property to see if this game is really for you.

Burnhamville Township August 27, 2019 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held August 27, 2019 at the Burtrum Community Center.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Sup. Joe Muellner, Mike Berscheit; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener.

Marlene Clark, Jean Gustafson and Erv Herdering were also present.

The minutes from the hearing held on July 30, 2019 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Johnson and was seconded by Sup. Berscheit.

thought the nuisance ordinance may be not appropriate for the local level, but may work at the county level. She will prepare a formal resolution complaint for the township to present to Todd County Planning and Zoning stating the building is a nuisance, unsafe, and a liability.

The county would be responsible for filing a lawsuit against the owner. The lawyer encouraged neighbors to add their complaints to the resolution.

Sup. Johnson made a motion for the lawyer to file a resolution for complaint about dilapidated house in Pillsbury. Sup. Berscheit seconded the motion.

Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Muellner to pay all bills numbered 5798 through 5813: Rev. $1,279.67; R&B $20,571.52.

Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

With the presidential election in 2020 the county is updating the election equipment plan. They would like to have all precincts purchase poll pad electronic rosters to replace the paper rosters. This will provide more privacy at the elections.

Sup. Johnson made a motion to purchase the recommended two poll pads for Burnhamville Township to use. Sup. Muellner

seconded the motion. Motion passed.

In the road report Sup. Berscheit viewed a washout issue on Dutchman Drive and determined this was a private driveway issue. Duckweed Drive has a problem with water flow. A supervisor and road contractor will view the area. Dunlin Road holding pit is getting full. The contractor will pull gravel out of holding area and look at how to build up crown on road to prevent excessive runoff. With the beaver problems the township will look into getting permit for whole year. Also, should set a beaver bounty at the March reorganizational meeting. Weed inspections showed land owners making efforts to control weeds.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $66,483.68 with PILT and dust control money received. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed.

Meeting was adjourned at 7:45 p.m. Next meeting will be on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center Shirley Hulinsky, Burnhamville Township Clerk

Regaining Momentum to Finish the Year Strong

By Christy Wright Can you believe there are only three months left in 2019? It feels like just yesterday I was picking up my boys from their last day of school before summer break.

Now, suddenly, we’re in the middle of holidaysare-just-around-

the-corner craziness!

I think the hardest part about getting to this season is realizing you haven’t thought about the goals you set in January since, well…January. But don’t be too hard on yourself. The good news is that goals and progress aren’t dates on the calendar. Whatever magic you felt on the first of January can be duplicated any other month of the year. You can regain momentum and finish the year with the same drive and ambition you started with.

Let’s look at four steps you can take to make that happen: Step 1: Revisit Your Goals Before you do anything else, go back to the beginning of the year and revisit all the different goals you wanted to tackle.

Don’t get into the nitty gritty details just yet. All I want you to do is get those goals out of your head and on paper.

Step 2: Remember Your Why Now, I want you to remind yourself of the why behind each and every goal on your sheet of paper. This is where you ask yourself: Why did I want to accomplish this in the first place? Often, the reason we give up on a goal or forget about it all to-

When it comes to their careers, many adults feel like they’re in a costume and wearing a mask, not knowing who they really are. You may have seen a “costume” you thought you wanted at some point, discovered later it wasn’t a good fit, but continued to walk around in it for years.

I’ve worn the wrong mask four or five times in my life. At first, it’s kind of fun.

It’s interesting to watch people’s reactions when you’re playing a part, and they don’t know who or what you really are underneath. After a while, though, it becomes suffocating. You want to rip that mask off, because you’ve been doing nothing but playing a role in your life at work for so

gether is because we lost sight of what was motivating us to begin with. And that’s exactly why this exercise is so important.

For example, maybe your goal was to get 10 more clients for your side business because you really wanted to make some extra money for a family vacation to Disney World. Is that still important to you?

This exercise might erase some of your goals off the list—and that’s a good thing. When the why is no longer important to you, you can stop feeling guilty about not accomplishing a goal. Once you’ve narrowed down your list to the goals you actually want to work on in the next few months, it’s time for step three.

Step 3: Get Moving Believe it or not, three months is more than enough time to reach some of your goals! First, make sure each of your goals has six specific qualities. Each goal should: Be specific.

Be measurable.

Have a time limit or deadline.

Be yours (not what someone else wants you to do).

Be in writing.

Be realistic.

This means “I want to write a book” is not an effective goal. Instead, you would jot down something like, “I will write 15,000 words (measurable) on marketing for small business (specific) by December 31st (deadline).”

Second, break down your goals into micro goals. Following the example above, if you need to write 15,000 words by the end of December, you could set a monthly goal of 5,000 words, a weekly goal of 1,250 words, and even a daily goal of 178 words.

If you’re still trying to determine who or what you were meant to be, try writing down your likes and dislikes, your strong points, and the areas where you could use a little help. Eventually two things will begin to appear—your greatest talents and your greatest passions. They will become more apparent, more specific, and deeper every time you sit down to evaluate who you really are and what it is you were made to do.

Over time, and with a little effort and honesty, your head and your heart will come to an agreement. Ask yourself what issues you find yourself interested in.

Some of your answers will already have passion threaded into them. And this will help you find your sweet spot!

Step 4: Plan for Next Year As you’re working to regain momentum and finish the year strong, don’t be afraid to start thinking about what you want to accomplish in the new year. In fact, some of your goals from 2019 might naturally roll into 2020—and that’s not bad thing.

Work to keep the momentum you gain going through the new year and you won’t have to worry about being one of those people who quit their New Year’s resolutions by February.

September 27, 2019: At 00:01 Kyle Middendorf (27) of rural Long Prairie was stopped for a traffic violation on County Road 86. Middendorf failed field sobriety testing and was arrested for DWI. September 28, 2019: At 11:40 received a call of a one vehicle rollover property damage accident that occurred on County 12 near 309th Ave. in Bruce TWP Sect. 33. 51 year old David Hofstadter, rural Swanville, was traveling eastbound on County 12 when he lost control of his Chevrolet truck. Hofstadter was going around a curve in the road when he went off the roadway on the right side and rolled his truck over. Hofstadter was not injured and his truck was a total loss.

September 30, 2019: During the week of September 22nd through September 28th, the Todd County Sheriff’s Office responded to 282 calls for service.

Todd County Dispatch received 101 - 911 Calls during the week.

September 30, 2019: At 18:59 responded to a report of a three year old male that had been ran over and stepped on by a horse at a residence in Leslie Township, 22907 165th Ave., Long Prairie. The victim was treated at the scene by Deputies until Long Prairie Ambulance personnel arrived. The victim was transported to the Long Prairie Hospital then to the St. Cloud Hospital for further treatment. The victim sustained serious injuries and his current condition is not known.

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz The Great Commander Michael; Daniel 10:10-14, 12:1-3 Daniel speaks of Michael, the great prince who has charge of God’s people.

“Michael” is a name derived from the question, “Who is like God?” It speaks of a time of trouble like no other, but the people of God will be delivered at that time including the resurrection of the dead. Even Jesus talked about the dead being raised to eternal life or eternal judgment at the end of time, the final judgment, his second coming.

Revelation 12:7-12 speaks of the angel Michael commanding his angels in a battle against Satan when he was first cast out of heaven. Michael is the chief Angel put in charge of battling Satan from the beginning of time to the end of time. In Daniel we are told he battles Satan on behalf of God’s people the written in the book. Yet we don’t worship Michael or any of the other angels because the victory is because of the blood of the lamb. (see Rev. 12:11) It is Jesus and his blood that leads to this victory and we know clearly who the lamb of God is. In Luke 10:17-20 Jesus recalls seeing Satan fall like lighting from heaven. Yet when the disciples return excited about having authority

over demons in Jesus’ name he reminds them what they should really be excited about, having their name written in heaven.

I am not a big fan of talking about Angels let alone preaching about them because Hallmark has done such a good job of painting a completely unbiblical image of them. No-one would ever fall down in fear when a hallmark angel appeared before them, more like “Oooh, you are so cute” and we’d want to reach out and pinch their cheek. The Angels of the Bible are awe-inspiring creatures, fear-invoking messengers of God almighty, warriors of the heavenly realms capable of defeating Satan and all his minions. For those redeemed in the blood of the Lamb they are on our side. They are Jesus’ to command and Michael is leading them.

So what can we get out of these confusing passages talking about Michael, the one who invokes the question of “Who is like God?” Well, we are made more like God through faith in Jesus Christ. Through Jesus’ death on the cross, and faith to believe in him and him alone, we are transformed to be like Jesus the Son of God. When we worry that Satan seems to be winning here on

50 years of shoreland protection and land management DNR commissioner celebrates benefits of three key measures from 1969 legislation Fifty years ago, the Minnesota Legislature ensured better land management and conservation through three key conservation measures. The Shoreland Protection Act, Floodplain Management Act, and legislation authorizing scientific and natural areas were all signed into law in 1969 by Gov. Harold LeVander.

At that time, most lake properties consisted of relatively tiny seasonal cabins built close to the water on small lots in a relatively natural state. Many Minnesota cities routinely suffered extensive flooding, endangering residents and causing massive economic losses. There was no broad program or legislation in place to protect natural landscapes in the state.

Fifty years later, shoreland management protections benefit both lakes and lake users. These measures have proven to be particularly important as large yearround lake homes and lawns, brick or stone hardscaping, and large docks and powerful boats have become common.

Scientific and natural areas protect native habitat and unique geologic features through a combination of private land purchases, land and money donations, leases from organizations like the Nature Conservancy, conservation easements and agreements with local governments.

“Minnesota leaders had tremendous foresight in enacting these measures fifty years ago, and all Minnesotans have reaped the benefits,” said DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen. “Now, it’s our responsibility to build on the foundation these programs have provided as we manage our natural resources for the future.”
