Customer service always matters -By Harvey Mackay A man entered a shoe repair shop and said to the owner, “I just found this claim ticket for a pair of shoes I dropped off … 10 years ago.”

“Oh my,” the shopkeeper chuckled. “Let me take a look at that,” he said as he inspected the ticket. “I hope we still have them. I’ll go in the back and check.”

The shopkeeper could be heard rummaging through boxes before he called out, “They’re still here!”

“That’s great!” the man said when the shopkeeper emerged from the back room holding a pair of dusty shoes.

“How much do I owe you?”

“They’re not ready,” the shopkeeper replied, “but I can have them back to you by next Tuesday.”

We’ve all been in that man’s shoes, metaphorically. We do business with

an organization, only to find out the customer isn’t really the most important person to them. Regardless of how often I speak or write about service, the response is most often centered on personal experiences that have disappointed. On rare occasions I hear about truly amazing service, and it just reinforces how important it is to share these stories with our sales force.

Let me give you an example. In the envelope manufacturing business, of which I’ve been a part for 50-plus years, we win or lose customer jobs by pennies per thousand, which at times seems incredulous for pricing to be so dominant in the decision process.

However, when most of our customers are purchasing between tens of millions to in several instances over 500 million envelopes annually, the pennies do count up to thousands of dollars of cost difference.

With our product and pricing so dramatically close between customer options, it truly does come down to quality of service and flexibility in adapting to the “ordering off the menu” requests by customers.

But the sale only begins when the customer says yes. In addition to the sales force, every person who has a hand in the production, packaging, delivery and post-sale customer service needs to be on board with the company’s philosophy and promises. Otherwise, that customer probably won’t be a customer for long.

Keeping employees motivated to consistently provide high-quality customer service is absolutely essential for any company that plans to stay in business. Here are some basic considerations: • Hire the right people. The rule is you either hire smart or manage tough. Hiring smart is much, much better, but it requires you to know what you’re looking for and to recognize the skills and attitude you want. Look at experience, and listen to your gut.

If you still aren’t sure, ask yourself if you’d want that person to be working for your competitor. If the answer is no, then you know your answer.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Snakes (2) Those of us who spent time outdoors as kids, remember s p e c i a l experiences with snakes. It seems that humans have inherited a fear of snakes. They suddenly appear in unexpected places and usually startle us. The snakes in our area are not harmful to humans, but something about their appearance scares us.

I’m aware of only 4 kinds of snakes in our ares. The most often seen snake is the garden snake, with striped colors that vary from green to almost black.

They appear in the yard, flower patch, garden and the wooded areas. The next observed snake in this area was referred by my family as a copper snake. There was a rumor that they were poisonous, which has been proven wrong. They are dark brown with emerald colored dotted lines on the sides of the more mature specimens. They appear in any outdoor setting. About 55 years ago there was an abundance of what was called “blow snakes”. These creatures had brown and black diamond shaped coloring on their skin, which was enough to startle the human, but when startled, the snake would raise it’s head, enlarge it’s neck and emit a loud hissing sound. It was said that if one inhaled the air hissed from the snake, it would cause lung

problems. This was also proven wrong.

The last type of snake I have never observed. Several fishermen told of a green snake that they observed while fishing. I know nothing else about this creature.

As previously mentioned, there is an inherited fear of snakes. Our ancestors experience with snakes evidently causes us to also avoid snakes as part of our nature. There are many breeds of snakes that are able to cause humans injury or death. Their appearance is usually not previously announced with any sound.

Suddenly they are there!!

Those of us who are aware of the story of creation have heard and read that a snake caused sin to come into humanity. As a small child, this story doesn’t cause feelings of endearment for snakes. Our families also cause us to find a snake as a scary, avoidable creature.

Today seeing a snake is not common. The population has decreased.

In previous years, there were snakes everywhere. At one time we lived in a house that had been built over an area that had previously been a garden snake gathering place. The snakes would sometimes appear in our house.

The university said that the snakes had inherited knowledge that our home’s location was where they should gather.

Any small opening, even a hole smaller than a mouse, could be an access. We moved!!

Snakes were under almost every grain shock. Since mice had created nests in the shocks, the snake had a convenient food supply. They were in

up mode. Let employees know what they’re being measured on and how it’s relevant to them, their customers, and the organization’s bottom line. Clear expectations eliminate misunderstandings.

• Recognize employees. Make sure you reward the desired outcome. For instance, if you want your salespeople to create relationships and long-term accounts, reward them. We have a designated parking spot with their name near the door for the salesperson of the month. A “wall of fame” is great motivation for displaying the above-andbeyond attitude you want to encourage.

• Practice what you preach. If you want a motivated customer-service rep, you need to be motivated yourself first. You need to love your customers, because if you’re not sincerely motivated yourself, you’ll never motivate other people to provide service excellence.

Steve Hardison, who went on to become a successful executive coach, began his career in sales at Xerox.

Product returns were against company policy at the time, but according to a story in the Chicago Tribune, one day Hardison decided to let one of his customers return a copier regardless of the rule. When his boss demanded an explanation, Hardison said, “If I lose a job because I took care of a customer, then I never had a job.”

The next day his boss’s boss called him into his office. Hardison

fully expected to get fired. Instead the executive said, “I wish I had more people like you.” His reputation for honesty and integrity was made.

Mackay’s Moral: There is no such thing as too good where customer service is involved.

windrows of hay. Sometimes they would stay in the bundle until it reached the thrashing machine at which time it was the decision of the man throwing the bundles into the machine to determine whether to flip the snake to the side or throw it into the thrash machine.

Sometimes snakes were baled into the hay bale. They were certainly not happy to be part of the bale and tried to threaten anything within reach with a bite. Any ground-level hay or straw storage was an instant dwelling for snakes, since again mice chose these locations for their homes.

I remember when Dad climbed up the straight end of a bale pile, (about 20 feet). When he reached the top he reached for a hold over the top bale and he put his hand on top of a large garden snake. I wasn’t sure if he would stay

up there or jump down. Not a pleasant surprise.

My Grandmother surprised one on her porch, so she “shopped da schlange mit da hacke.” None of the pieces ever came back on the porch.

My wife saw a snake on the neighbor’s step, so she called her to come over right away. When she made that first step onto the step, she shouted some uncomplimentary words at my wife who was watching from an open window.

Stearns County Emergency Alerts

By Stearns County Sheriff’s Office How do we get emergency alerts in Stearns County? We recently switched the program we use to accomplish this.

Previously, we used a software program called Everbridge for what we sometimes called “reverse 911” notifications.

We now call these “mass notifications.”

We now utilize the service called Rave Mobile Safety. This service gathers all the published landline phone numbers and puts them in a data- base.

If the Sheriff’s Office or Emergency Management would need to provide a notification about an event, a message would be recorded and sent out to these phones via the service.

If you don’t have a landline but would like to receive these same types of alerts on your cell phone, you would need to opt into the system and provide your cell phone number. When you register, you have the choice of providing your phone number or an email address for notification.

system for a mass notification a couple times a year. Typically we do so when an event is unfolding in a geographic area and want to alert nearby residents.

The system allows us to draw a shape on a map and alert only those inside that designated area. Without a landline, you wouldn’t receive anything. Providing some other contact avenue to the County may be a good thing.

Obituaries Shirley Y. Swenson

Donald and Shirley were members of Svea Lutheran Church where Shirley was active in the Ladies Aid, setting up communion, and volunteering in other areas. The couple moved to Sauk Centre in 1986 and became members of First Lutheran Church. Even though her life was spent in Svea and Sauk Centre for many years, her heart remained in Bovey and at the Danube Location in the Iron Range.

She enjoyed quilting, knitting, crocheting, gardening, and most of all, baking for her family. Donald and Shirley enjoyed travelling and spent many winters in Texas.

Survivors include her children, Cathy (Paul) Folland of St. Paul, Christy (John) Felling of Sauk Centre, John (Sheri) Swenson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Charlene (Michael) Olson of Bemidji, Tim (Gayle) Swenson of Sauk Centre; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and sister, Audrey Hein of Little Falls.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald Swenson on August 1, 2012; son, Tommy Swenson; grandson, Matthew Folland; sister, Agnes Hromyak; brother, Larry Nix; and one infant sister.

Arrangements are with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Sauk Centre.

Shirley Y. Swenson, age 91 of Sauk Centre, died after a 10year journey with Alzheimer’s Disease on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A memorial service was held Monday, October 28 at First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Rebecca Thomas officiating. Inurnment was Tuesday, October 29 at Svea Lutheran Cemetery in Svea, Minnesota.

Shirley Yvonne Nix was born May 3, 1928 in Grand Rapids, Minnesota to Frank and Esther (Ames) Nix. She grew up on the Iron Range in Bovey, Minnesota and went to school at Greenway High School in Coleraine, Minnesota. After high school, Shirley lived in Svea, Minnesota and was a homemaker most of her life. During her time in Svea, she worked at Willmar Poultry Company for 10 years. On May 10, 1947 she married Donald Swenson at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bovey.

Ervin M. Kraemer, age 77 of Albany, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 28, 2019 at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11a.m. Saturday, November 2 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Edward Vebelun, O.S.B. officiating and Rev. Julius Beckermann, O.S.B. concelebrating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Seven Dolors Gathering Area. Parish prayers will be held at 4 p.m. Friday evening at the church.

Ervin was born September 12, 1942 in Richmond, Minnesota to Peter and Alvina (Schmitz) Kraemer. Ervin grew up near Richmond and St. Anna on the family farm. After high school, he worked in Minneapolis, then joined the Navy. When his active service ended, he attended St. Cloud Technical College where he earned his electrical degree. On May 30, 1969 Ervin was united in marriage to Eleanor “Ellie” Fischer at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Ervin worked at many construction sites, for the Electrical Union – IBEW, and for roughly 20 years at the St. Cloud Reformatory.

A faithful, hardworking, and selfless man, Ervin enjoyed coin and rock collecting,

playing cards, being with family and friends, working with his hands, and traveling. He was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Albany American Legion, John Birch Society, and Knights of Columbus, where he served as a Grand Knight.

“Preach the Gospel always and, if necessary, use words.” This quote from St. Francis sums up Ervin’s life in many ways.

The Gospel was the foundation of his life, and he proclaimed it to all through his actions. Ervin was constantly serving others with little thought of himself. Whether it was helping a neighbor in need, donating gallons of blood, or volunteering for years at the Apostolate for Family Consecration in Ohio, he was willing to do whatever was needed. Truly an inspiration of loving dedication to God, family, friends, and country, his legacy will live on in all those who follow his example.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanor “Ellie” Kraemer of Albany; children, Brian (Lisa) Kraemer of Ramsey, Bruce (Wanda) Kraemer of Clear Lake, Laura (Rich) Scanlon of Delran, New Jersey, and Kara Kraemer of Albany; nine grandchildren; and brother and sisters, Roselin Jonas of Hutchinson, Delroy (Janice) Kraemer of Foley, Delrose (Stanley) Symaniatz of Avon, Erma (Donald) Klein of Avon, Alice (Robert) Kobylinski of Holdingford, and Marlene (Steve) Bresnahan of Watkins.

Ervin was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Alvina Kraemer; grandchild, Therese Scanlon; sister, Irene Woitalla; and brothers-in-law, Edward Woitalla and Ronald Jonas.

Memorials are preferred.

Arrangements are with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Delroy “Butch” J. Thielman Mass of Christian Burial as held Monday October 28, 2019 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon for Butch Thielman who passed away suddenly on Wednesday, October 23 at his home in Avon.

His brother, Fr. Kenneth Thielman and Fr. Edward Vebelun, OSB concelebrated.

Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Butch was born August 30, 1933 in Avon to Nicholas & Frances (Wellenstein) Thielman. He grew up in Avon and graduated from Tech High School in St. Cloud. He served his country in the United States Navy from 1952-1956. He returned to Avon and has lived in the Thielman family home his entire life. He worked in the office at Dezurik in Sartell for 26 years. He is a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon. He was also active in the Avon Laker Baseball club as a player and board member, American Legion, Lions Club and volunteering for Meals on Wheels. He also loved spending time with his family hunting and fishing and spending time in Arizona.

Survivors include his brothers, Howard (Colleen) of St. Joseph; Fr. Kenneth of Melrose; Lowell “Friday” (Phyllis) of Avon; Nicholas, Holy Cross Brother of Notre Dame, Indiana; and many loving nephews, nieces, and great nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother, Nester, brothers, Sylvester and Gerald, sisters, Lenora Andrews, Bernice Sauer, Virginia Lehn, Evelyn Nelson, Delphine Newkirk and significant other, Pat Sowada.

George R. Middendorf George R. Middendorf, age 93 of Sauk Centre, died peacefully October 28, 2019 with his family at his side.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 2, 2019 at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Tim Wenzel and Rev. Rick Aubol concelebrating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre. A prayer service will be held at 6 p.m. during the Friday evening visitation. Visitation will continue 9:4510:45 a.m. Saturday morning at the Saint Paul’s Catholic Church Gathering Area.

George Richard Middendorf was born October 15, 1926, the son of Joseph and Veronica (Toenyan) Middendorf in rural Freeport, Minnesota. George attended Catholic parochial school in Freeport grades 1-6 living with his grandparents in Freeport.

He finished 7th & 8th grade in Sauk Centre.

Following his education, he worked on the Middendorf farm, saving money to buy a farm.

In 1948, he purchased a 120-acre farm northeast of Sauk Centre. On October 26, 1948, he was united in marriage to Marilynn Jean Kane at Saint Alexius Catholic Church in West Union, Minnesota. Together, they worked the farm George had purchased and raised their family of five children. When George started farming the land, he was farming with a team of horses, later getting tractors to help do the work, milking dairy cows, raising hogs and many other animals.

Besides working as a farmer, George sold seed corn. He was a salesman for nearly 50 years—selling seed corn to close friends and family members until he was in his late 80’s. In 1980, George and Marilynn retired and moved to Sauk Centre. In his

retirement years, he was just as busy as when he was a farmer -- he still helped on the farm, restored old campers and many Farmall tractors which included painting them to look brand new, and did many handy man projects. He could be counted on to fix any plumbing issue as well as install furnaces for family and friends. It appeared there was nothing George could not do!

George truly enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved to drive around the countryside “checking out the fields” of his family members and friends. George assisted Marilynn in taking communion to the shut ins of their church; he was responsible for making sure there was a bulletin for each person they visited.

George was a man with a unique sense of humor and had a quick wit.

George was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.

He will be deeply missed by his wife of 71 years, Marilynn of Sauk Centre; children, Pat (Bob) VonWahlde of Melrose, Jim (Myra) Middendorf of Sartell, Donna (John) Broermann of Sauk Centre, and Georgiann (Marty) Primus of Sauk Centre; daughter-inlaw, LaVonne Middendorf of Sauk Centre; 21 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; siblings, William Middendorf of Melrose, LeRoy (Adeline) Middendorf of Sauk Centre, Joe (Lou) Middendorf of Sauk Centre, Victor (Florence) Middendorf of Melrose, Margaret Klasen of Sauk Centre, Betty (Ron) Thieschafer of Melrose, and Jerry (Diane) Middendorf of Sauk Centre; sister-in-law, JoAnn Middendorf of Sauk Centre; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Middendorf in 2018; parents, Joseph and Veronica Middendorf; brothers, Ralph Middendorf and Art Middendorf; sister-in-law, Edna Middendorf and brotherin-law, John Klasen.

Serving as casket bearers will be his grandsons, Michael Middendorf, Jon Middendorf, Matt VonWahlde, Dustin Middendorf, Jason Broermann, Chris Broermann, Shane Broermann, Joshua Primus, and Ben Primus.

Retreat. Lori had a strong faith and put Christ first in everything she did.

Lori was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport and the Christian Women. She enjoyed attending Masses at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa while she lived at the parish house and loved being part of their church community. Lori loved being outdoors where she enjoyed watching sunrises and sunsets, biking, hiking, and running. She truly appreciated everyone who volunteered to help her and always looked forward to paying it forward. Lori loved being with her family and friends and will be remembered for always putting others first.

Survivors include her parents, Loren and Jane Scherping of Freeport; brothers and sisters, Jason (Amy) Scherping of Freeport, Bryan (Kimberly) Scherping of St. Cloud, Sandy (Monte) Flath of Fargo, North Dakota, Randy (Megan) Scherping of Freeport, and Kristin (Nicholas) Kerfeld of St. Rosa; seven nieces and nephews, Tyler, Alyssa, Wyatt, Hailey, McKenna, Freya, and Ayla, with one on the way; and many loving relatives and friends.

Lori was preceded in death by her grandparents, Lawrence and Laura Scherping and Hubert and Florence Lange; and uncles, Marvin Lange and Pete Jennissen.

Lori A. Scherping, age 37 of Freeport, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family after a three year battle with breast cancer on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at the Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta, Minnesota.

Lori Ann Scherping was born January 20, 1982 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Loren and Jane (Lange) Scherping. Lori grew up in Freeport and graduated from Melrose High School in 2000. She was employed with Christensen Group (formerly SMA insurance) in St. Cloud as an Account Client Representative for businesses for six years.

Lori was a blessing to all who came in contact with her. She had a positive attitude and was willing to help those in need and was always smiling, even when she was in pain or low on energy. She had given back by being involved in the Central Minnesota Chapter of Beginning Experience. Lori also had been involved with the St. Cloud Diocese Castaway Retreat and Central MN TEC (Together Encountering Christ)

By Lori Young Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen, Todd County Sheriff Steve Och and Jason Thompson from the Waite Park Police Department were at the Swanville School Monday evening, October 28 presenting about Internet Safety and Sex Trafficking.

Their purpose was to inform the community about the dangers with social media, knowing what your children are doing online, checking their cell phones, knowing who they are interacting with because there are creeps everywhere taking advantage of kids.

This also includes online gaming. An example is Fortnite, with it being a very popular game, it becomes a great opportuinity for those preying on kids if they are unaware of the dangers.

With online chats, people tend to fall in love not even knowing if the person on the other end is even who they say they are. Snapchat has been used to send nude photos which is then used as blackmail for getting money. All media is permanent. Eventhough you delete it on your end, it is not gone and can be retrieved.

Sex trafficking is going on everywhere, even in our small communities.

They recently had a situation in Brooten. The average age of first exploitation in prostitution is 12-14 years old. 75% of all prostituted people (worldwide) entered the sex trade before age 18.

The three components are pimp, the buyer and the victim.

Jason commented, “If we could eliminate the buyers, it would not exist.”

Surprisingly, many mid-aged, white males (business men, family men, etc.) were the buyers, who would do business during their lunch breaks or other errands from work and return to their families after work.

Jason also went through recognizing the signs of victims, those at high risk, the tricks used to lure them in and the barriers that keep them from leaving.

For parents, it is so important to know what your child is doing and they are where they say they are going to be and not meeting up with someone they met online. There are parental apps which help, such as Life360, Net Nanny, WebWatcher and more.

Dear Motor Medics, I’m having a problem with my lights on my 2000 Ford Taurus. Both the front and rear lights have water in them. The rear looks like a bathroom mirror after a hot shower on both sides and the front has water collected towards the bottom of the driver side headlight. When the weather is dry for long periods they will clear up, but if I wash the car or it rains once they fog right back up. The bulbs themselves seem to be working ok and this has gone on for a couple of years. What can I do to fix this? I just don’t like the way it looks.

-Pat in Larchwood, Iowa Dear Pat, Many vehicles have this issue. The moisture comes from the seal around the plastic lens leaking where it’s bonded to the inside light reflector housing. During hot sunny days the heat generated by the sun will break down the seal and moisture will occur. In some cases, the lens will separate completely from the reflector. We have seen people try many things to repair their existing lights but usually the most effective fix is to replace the assembly. Check several places for the best deal. Auto recycling facilities, the dealer, and auto parts stores usually carry the assemblies. Once you find a good light at a reasonable cost, you could possibly install them yourself.

You will want to have the front aimed by a professional though.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2001 Ford F150 and I would like to know more about using synthetic oils in order to extend the life of the truck and increase fuel mileage.

Am I on the right track here? Can I expect to see a big increase in mileage if I switch to all synthetics and is there a risk that I might damage something by switching now after 150,000 miles using regular oils? I have changed the fluids according to the manuals severe service ratings on time ever since I purchased the truck new.

-Devon in Vandalia, Missouri Dear Devon, You can switch all the fluids over to synthetics but don’t expect a huge gain in mileage. If you have all conventional oils now and were to change everything in the drivetrain over, you may see a slight increase in the highway mileage, and you will help extend the life of any parts that are not already worn severely. The oil itself should not hurt your vehicle but you must stick with the factory approved type. On some older vehicles changing may result in leaks.

Consult with your dealer to be sure.

Synthetics don’t break down as fast as conventional oils and they hold their viscosity more consistently which is the main boost for the mileage. Changing over to synthetics can be expensive so if you do it you may want to change one at a time when that service comes due.

Swanville Veterans Day Program to be held November 11

By Carol Duke The USA Choir of Swanville/Grey Eagle will be honoring our local Veterans, “Boots on the Ground” and those who served on ship in Vietnam, in their annual Veterans Day Program. Most of the Veterans to be honored are from Swanville Willard B Johnson VFW Post 6037. The men being honored are James Allen, Fred Duke, Vern Ehrenberg, Charles Harrison, Robert Koetter, Jim Truman, and Jerome Denk. Honorable mention to the Vietnam Veterans not able to attend: Sylvan Grams, Richard Krauel, Harvey Johnson, Bruce Johnson, David Kuehne and Jim Waltman.

Recently, many of these men were able to travel to Washington D.C. to visit the war memorials through the generosity of the Swanville Community and surrounding area.

The choir will be performing some patriotic pieces but also some from the Vietnam era. The choir is directed by Duane Weisbrich and Karen Becker as accompanist. The USA Honor Squad Color Guard will present the colors.

The Honor Squad is comprised of students from Swanville, Upsala and Long Prairie in grades third through sixth. The Honor Squad is directed by Ashley Maciej.

The Grey Eagle Community Handbell Choir, directed by Robert Kutter, will perform Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” and “America.” Also singing are former U.S. Singing Sargeants Maureen Putnam and Tom Speckhard performing a medley of 1960’s tunes. Guest perfor-

In addition, to provide the audience members some idea of what Vietnam Veterans service was like, there will be readings from an interview with a U.S. Navy Seal, an oral history of a Navy Officer caught up in a 36 hour firefight and a segment about a battle in the la Drang Valley.

The Veterans Day show will be held at the Swanville School Auditorium on Veterans Day, November 11 at 7:30 p.m.

Admission is free, but offerings are accepted to fund our programs.

The program is funded by a grant from the Laura Jane Musser Fund and by funds provided by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Five Wings Arts Council.

From the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, no Five Wings grant funds, were used for this concert, but it helps our organization on other projects.

-Christie Dear Christie, Te a c h i n g kids there’s an emotional connection between work and money is one of the best things you can do as a parent. Once your kids are old enough to do a few simple chores around the house, they’re old enough to earn a little money doing them.

In my mind, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with putting kids who are three or four on a basic commission system. If they do the jobs you assign them, they get paid. If they don’t do the jobs, they don’t get paid. We put a little dry-erase board on the refrigerator, and listed the jobs they had to do during the week with a dollar amount next to each one.

Keep in mind, kids shouldn’t get paid for every little thing they do around the house. Some jobs are just a necessary component of being part of a family. And there are some things kids should do simply because mom or dad asked them to. Some jobs should have a higher purpose in mind, too, because as a parent, you should want to find as many teachable moments for your kids as possible.

Once they’ve earned their money, sit down with them and divide it into three separate envelopes—saving, spending, and giving. That way, they get to learn

about the uses for money while they’re learning how to work!

-Jeanna Dear Jeanna, Sure, if they’re guaranteed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

The FDIC is one of two agencies that provide deposit insurance to customers in America’s depository institutions.

The other is the National Credit Union Administration, or NCUA, which insures and regulates credit unions.

If you’re seriously considering using an online bank, there are a few things I’d advise checking out before making the move. Look into the bank’s track record, and see how long it has been open. Also, if the bank you’re considering doesn’t have a name-brand you recognize, find out the amount of its deposits.

Online banks don’t worry me today like they did 10 years ago. And almost everyone does some form of online banking these days, anyway. If the bank in question has a good reputation, and sufficient deposits to have some strength in its FDIC guarantee, I wouldn’t worry about it.

How Guilt Can Lead to Student Loan Debt

By Anthony ONeal I know you want the very best for your teens. And if you’re like most parents, you’d do just about anything for them.

That can make for some tough decisions when it’s time to talk about paying for college.

The cost of college is one of the biggest stressors for parents (and kids) at this stage in the game. Last time I checked, college is expensive. With the way tuition costs have been skyrocketing, it seems like more and more people are relying on student loans to get through college. In fact, that’s the norm at this point. Don’t even get me started on the $1.6 trillion student loan crisis in our country right now!

All the conversations around student loans might make you feel conflicted—like you don’t know the best way to give your kids the future you want them to have. You might even be experiencing some guilt as you realize just how big a financial commitment college really is. I get it. So, let’s talk through how guilt can lead to choices that ultimately won’t help your kids, and some alternatives that will help them.

Here are three reasons you might feel guilty as a parent when it comes to your kids’ college education.

You can’t afford it Like I said, college is crazy expensive. A lot of people pretend they can afford it by taking out loans to cover the cost. But you know what? That only results in you, or your kids, having a huge burden of student loan debt to deal with when they graduate.

It’s actually healthier to admit your family doesn’t have the funds to pay for college. Talk with your teen about how college can still be a possibility by going to an in-state, public school. Also, look

into work-study programs, attending community college, getting high ACT/ SAT scores, grants and scholarships.

I’m looking at you, FAFSA form!

You think your kids deserve to go to their dream school I say this all the time: The only dream school is one your kids can graduate from debt-free. I understand they might’ve been wearing Ivy League swag since they were little kids, but they shouldn’t go there if they can’t pay for it without loans.

Real talk: A degree is a degree, no matter where it’s from. In the real world, the right employers are going to care far more about an employee’s skill set, work ethic, and character than where they went to school.

You feel like you shouldn’t fund your future if your kids can’t fund theirs Listen, I’m all for higher education.

But college is a privilege, not a right.

If you have the financial means to help your kids pay for college, and choose to bless them in that way, that’s awesome!

But that shouldn’t happen at the expense of your retirement fund.

Remember, college is not a guarantee—retirement is. Focus on building a fully-funded emergency fund, paying off any debt you might have, and investing 15 percent of your income into retirement. Then you can start thinking about your kids’ college fund.

There are so many ways your kids can get a debt-free education. And there are so many smart ways you can help them prepare for that next step!

Deputies Stop Suicidal Man: October 19, 2019: Law Enforcement is often categorized as long stretches of quietness, punctuated by moments of crisis, and fueled by adrenaline. Unfortunately, the quiet moments have lessened over the years while the more critical moments have increased. This was the case on Saturday, October 19th.

Around 9:40 p.m., the Communications Center received a phone call from a distraught, crying man. He threatened to harm himself and a short time later he hung up the phone. Fortunately, because he called 911, we had his phone number and were able to trace it to a possible residence. Deputies Adam Johnson, Adam Wood and Keith Simon responded. Family members confirmed the identity of the male, and the phone number and gave deputies a car description. Deputies also started the locate process on his cell phone.

Around the time the dispatcher received the first coordinates for the phone, other dispatchers were taking calls about a male walking on Interstate 94 carrying a bottle. This was about 5 miles away from where the deputies had contacted family members. Several drivers called in to report the male, and a couple reported almost striking him.

Deputies Johnson, Wood and Simon responded and located the male on Interstate 94 at the County Road 10 underpass.

He was holding a knife to his neck and telling deputies and officers to stay back.

Deputy Watson is one of our negotiators. Some of the other officers on scene were also trained in crisis interventions.

In addition to being in crisis and suicidal, this gentleman was very intoxicated. In these crisis moments, having a meaningful and productive conversation is already impacted by their thinking. This situation posed additional obstacles, as it was taking place on a busy Interstate highway as well as the male’s thought process being negatively impacted by alcohol consumption.

While Deputy Watson was driving to the scene, he called the male on his cell phone and began the intervention, which continued once he arrived. Deputy Watson tried to de-escalate the situation and gain cooperation from the man, but to no avail. Eventually, Deputy Watson saw the opportunity to use a taser and did so. The man was taken into custody and was prevented from harming himself or anyone else.

Ideally, we would always like to be able to talk our way into a successful resolution. We also know that it is not always possible and we need to keep our options open. In this instance, the male was not hurt and we were able to bring him to a facility for the care and intervention services he needed.

Pedestrian crashes, fatalities increase during fall months Shorter days and more hours of darkness this time of year contribute to an increase number of crashes between people driving and walking, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. As the days get shorter, motorists and pedestrians should use caution when driving and walking.

Motor vehicle crashes have killed 33 pedestrians so far this year. According to crash facts from the Department of Public Safety, 45 pedestrians died and 987 were injured in crashes with vehicles in 2018 and 42 pedestrian deaths and 1,053 injuries happened in 2017.

“It’s more difficult to see people walking in the dark, so we see an increased risk for pedestrian crashes in the fall as daylight hours diminish,” said Brian Sorenson, state traffic engineer.

“Both drivers and walkers need to know and obey the laws to maximize safety.

Remember, all of us walk at some point in our day.”

The crosswalk law includes these highlights: · People driving must stop for crossing pedestrians at marked crosswalks and at all intersections without crosswalks or stop lights. · When a vehicle is stopped at an intersection, drivers of other vehicles approaching from the rear should never pass the stopped vehicle. · Drivers should scan the road and

sides of the road ahead for pedestrians. · Drivers stopped for pedestrians can proceed once the pedestrian has completely crossed the lane in front of their stopped vehicle. · People driving and walking should avoid distractions and dangerous behavior. · People walking should obey traffic signs and signals at all intersections that have them. · Pedestrians shouldn’t enter a crosswalk if a vehicle is approaching and it is impossible for the driver to stop.

A little boy came home from the playground with a bloody nose, black eye, and torn clothing. It was obvious he’d been in a bad fight and lost. While his father was patching him up, he asked his son what happened.

“Uh-huh,” said the father, “that seems fair.”

For over two decades, Chad Lewis has traveled the back roads of the world in search of the strange and unusual.

Chad has been featured on the Discovery Channel’s “A Haunting,” William Shatner’s “Weird or What,” ABC’s “Scariest Places on Earth,” along with being a frequent contributor on “Ripley’s Believe it or Not Radio.” With a Master’s Degree in Psychology, Chad has authored over 20 books in the strange and unusual. Guitar Ensemble Crash Course & Concert with the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet: Friday, Nov. 8: 2:30-4:00 p.m. crash course; 7:30-8:30 p.m. concert. In 90 minutes, the MGQ will introduce multi-age participants to the “hands-on” experience of guitar ensemble playing, culminating in a live performance. Beginner to advanced guitar players join together for a rehearsal and a performance of composer Jeff Lambert’s A Latin Evening, composed specifically for this class. A limited number of guitars are available or participants can bring their own guitar. The Course will be held in the Upsala Area Schools auditorium at 415 S Main St in Upsala. The public performance will be held from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at the school.
