Don’t forget who you are -By Harvey Mackay A king in a far-off land had an army of elephants.

When his bravest, strongest elephant grew too old to fight, the king let him go free in a forest where he had everything he could eat and drink.

One day the elephant was drinking in a pond and got a leg stuck in the mud. As hard as he tried, he couldn’t pull himself free. He finally just sat down, bellowing in pain. The king’s servants heard him and rushed to help.

But they couldn’t pull the elephant’s leg out of the mud.

The king went to see the elephant and, on the way, spotted a wise man from outside the village, so he asked for advice. The wise man thought for a moment and then said, “Play the drums of war.”

The king assembled his army and ordered them to play their war drums. Soon the elephant perked up, rose and finally pulled his leg free.

All the elephant needed was to be reminded of who he was. People are much the same. Sometimes we forget who we are and what we are capable of and what we have accomplished.

And while you won’t likely get literally stuck in the mud, obstacles can set you back if you let them. When you feel like you can’t escape the quicksand, you begin to question how you will ever get back on track. You need your own drums of war – confidence.

Confidence enables you to perform to the best of your abilities, without the fear of failure holding you back. It starts with believing in yourself.

Self-confidence alone won’t help you succeed, but it’s hard to get started or push through the inevitable obstacles without believing in yourself first.

Do you struggle with self-confidence?

Almost everyone does at some point.

Self-confidence is extremely important in almost every aspect of our lives, yet many people don’t believe in themselves as they should, and they find it difficult to become successful.

As one of my favorite motivational authors, Norman Vincent Peale, said, “Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities!

Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy.”

A great way to improve your selfconfidence is by identifying and developing your strengths. One of the secrets of success is making the most of your strengths. First, though, you have to determine what your strengths are – and that may not be obvious, especially if you’re just starting out or looking to make a career change.

I have had the privilege of mentoring hundreds of people over my lifetime. I always ask them two questions: What do you like to do? What are your strengths? Most have a good idea of what they like to do, but few of them know their own strengths.

Your strengths develop from a variety of sources: natural ability and aptitude, formal education, job experience, internships, research, hobbies, volunteer involvement, and so on. You may not realize the depth of your knowledge or expertise, and that can seriously

limit your job search or career path.

If you are in college, by all means take advantage of some of the aptitude and career placement tests to determine your strengths, weaknesses and hidden talents. If you are not in school, you can find tests online or at your local library. Industrial psychologists are also most helpful in identifying areas that you should consider pursuing – or avoiding.

And here’s a tip for managers: helping your employees develop their self-confidence is an important part of your role.

Thomas Edison experimented about 1,000 times in inventing the light bulb. He called his “office boy” to test the bulb, but the boy was so nervous that he accidentally dropped it. He thought he would be fired, but Edison called the boy back two days later to test another light bulb that Edison had constructed.

All his assistants were aghast and asked, “Why would you call him again? He might drop it again.”

Edison responded, “It took me roughly one day to construct the bulb again, and even if he drops it again, I can construct the bulb within a day. But if I don’t give him the same task again, then he would have lost his selfbelief and confidence, which would be very difficult to get back. And I don’t want that to happen.”

Mackay’s Moral: Self-confidence by itself is of no value. It is useful only when put to work.

all year, whether it was 80 above or 30 below.

On the farm, supplying water to the cattle, milking the cows and lighting the barn was done very differently. A tank near the hand pump was used to water the cattle. The pigs and chickens had their water carried to them.

Milking was done with the help of a Wisconsin motor, which may or may not start. It was still considered a valuable help for milking, since it was better than milking a dozen cows by hand.

Most farms separated the milk with a hand cranked separator. Cream had a better price and by reducing the milk volume required less hand pumped water for cooling. The skim milk was also used to create “pig slop."

The barn lighting was needed since many of the chores were done in the morning and evenings without the aid of sunlight. Kerosene lanterns supplied limited light, but were used sparingly, since caution made the farmer try to avoid fire in the very flammable barn. Hay and silage were taken from storage during daylight hours without light.

Preserving food in the freezer or frig was not possible.

There was no turning on a faucet to get either hot or cold water. Water was pumped with a hand pump, carried to the house in pails and after it had washed dishes, clothes or a body, it was carried outside in pails and emptied on the lawn. These include having a licensed professional pump and clean your septic tank every 2 to 3 years, monitoring the water use in your home and making sure that nothing goes down the drain that could harm your system such as non-degradable items, excessive use of household cleaners, etc.

older guys, I have decided that if you spent your younger years with kerosene lamps and no electricity, you are comfortable with less lighting. Those with a lifetime of electric lighting need to put the light on more often.

I find that if the room lighting is dim, I'll just live with it, since I can see whatever I need to see. However, my Wife will need to put the light on and occasionally leave it on when she leaves the room. My mind says,”who is paying the electric bill?" This is just an example of the wisdom that comes from a couple of old guys solving the world problems.

our farm, my Dad had to decide whether to hook up with Minnesota Power or REA. He chose Minnesota Power because he felt that it would be more reliable due to the location of the power lines. REA lines typically ran cross country and Minnesota Power lines usually followed roads. He felt that fixing a power line problem in 4 feet of snow would be easier along a plowed road.

During the early days of electric service, I remember the electric service being off about half of the time. Since the farm had been run without electricity previously, the outage didn't create the problems that it does today.

My Grandmother said that if the “Ruushins” wanted to take this country down, all they had to do is blow up the transformer stations.

Obituaries

Elmer E. Gangl

Elmer E. Gangl, age 96 of Melrose, passed away on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A private graveside service will be held in St. Jospeh’s Cemetery in Grey Eagle with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday, October 26 at the Sauk Centre American Legion.

Elmer Ervin Gangl was born July 5, 1927 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Michael and Hilda (Eiynck) Gangl. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and was honorably discharged in July of 1947.

He was united in marriage to Valeria Herzog on September 1, 1955 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa. Elmer owned and operated Elmer’s Bar in St. Rosa. After retirement, Elmer and Valeria moved to Big Birch Lake. Valeria passed away in 1995 and later, Elmer found friendship with Loretta Pfeifer. They resided on Lake Sylvia together for 16 years until Loretta passed away.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle and the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050. Elmer enjoyed fishing and spearing, traveling, deer hunting, and spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his daughter, Joyce (Doug) Kaiser of Long Prairie; grandchildren, Kelsey Kaiser, Taylor (Amber) Kaiser, and Austin (Jessie) Kaiser; great-granddaughter, Charlie; sisters, Marti (Roger) Doetkott of Melrose, Ida Finken of Melrose, and Luella (Jim) Noren of St. Paul; and many relatives and friends.

Elmer was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Valeria Gangl; parents; son, William Gangl; special friend, Loretta Pfeifer; brothers and sisters, Sally, Dan, Don, Melvin, Issy, Hannah, Herman, Angie, Fron, Loretta, and Al. Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral and Cremation Services of Grey Eagle.

Marlene B. Soltis, 90 year old resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of Upsala, MN, passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at the Little Falls Care Center. There will be a visitation on Monday, October 30, 2023 from 3 to 7 PM at Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls. Interment will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls.

Caring for Marlene and her family is the Shelley Funeral Chapel of Little Falls.

Marlene was born December 14, 1932 near St. John, ND to the late Lonnie and Alvira (Etta) Rardon. Marlene graduated from St. John High School in May 1950 and then worked as Deputy County Auditor at the courthouse in Roll, ND. Marlene met Bill in September 1950 in Churches Ferry, ND. Bill was drafted into the Army in July 1951 and when he came back on furlough they were married on November 30 1951 in St. John, ND. Bill was then sent to Japan and upon discharge in 1953, Bill and Marlene then lived on a farm near South Elmdale with their two children, Alan and Beverly, for 3 years and then moved to Minneapolis and then St Paul while Bill learned the stucco and plastering trade. After realizing that city life was not for them, they then moved back to Upsala in 1959 where they raised their children and in later years, enjoyed helping care for their grandchildren. They did a variety of farming including raising pigs and had many different horses. Marlene worked at the bank in Upsala until her retirement in 1994. Marlene also helped Bill run their stucco business doing the accounting and a variety of other businessrelated tasks. They were a wonderful exemplary team. Marlene was best known for being a wonderful cook. She made all of Bill’s packed lunches from scratch, including Albany bakery bread, homemade strawberry jam and prune kolaches! To this day, her beef stew, homemade chicken soup, nut tea ring and prune kolaches are beloved family favorites. She loved to make the holidays special and would set a beautiful table and make all the Soltis family traditional holiday foods. She also enjoyed going out to eat at different places.

Bill and Marlene attended the South Elmdale Congregational Church for many years where Marlene was also active in the ladies' aide and later Community Covenant Church in Upsala. Marlene loved to read a variety of books, but especially her bible and devotionals. She did a lot of canning and gardening to supplement her excellent cooking. She did many needlepoint pictures over the years. She and Bill loved to attend auctions and collected many antiques together, especially oil lamps and depression glass dishes. Oftentimes Bill and Marlene could be seen riding around town in their horse-drawn

buggies and in the wintertime their horse-drawn bobsled. They were in a big variety of smalltown parades. Marlene had a special love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were all a very integral part of her life and they all brought her such great joy and pride. Family was always first and above all things. Her spirit, love and compassion will all be deeply missed, leaving a lasting void in the hearts of her family, but her legacy will carry on forever.

Left to treasure her memory are her daughter, Beverly (Jeff) Edelstein; daughter-inlaw, Theresa (Sherman) Phillips; granddaughters, Victoria (John) Walsh, Erica (Nathan) Groleau, Bryce (Randell) Long; grandsons, Benjamin Bick, William Soltis, Raymond Soltis; greatgrandchildren, John D. Walsh, Madison Walsh, Ava Dalbec, Natasha Groleau, Randell Long III and Beau Long; sisters, Janice (John) Hvidsten and Aretta Hendrickson.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, husband, William Soltis; son, Alan Soltis; sister, Stella Johnson, and four infant siblings.

Katie Llewellyn

Katie Danielle Llewellyn, age 38 of Melrose, Minnesota, passed away Monday, October 9, 2023 in Melrose.

A funeral service was held Thursday, October 19th at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose with Pastor David Mommens officiating.

Katie Danielle (Farris) Llewellyn was born October 8, 1985 in Columbus, Ohio to Kent Rather and Elizabeth Farris. She married her high school sweetheart in 2004 and started her family by giving birth to her first child in 2005 and her following children in 2006 and 2007. On June 7, 2014 she remarried to William Llewellyn at St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose.

Katie enjoyed being a mother. From a young age, it was clear that being a mother was what she wanted most in life. As a child, she was gifted a Cabbage Patch doll who she named Victoria Rose.

She stated that was her favorite name and the name she would give her first daughter. She committed to that and named her first daughter Victoria Rose Olson. She was a good friend to many and would be recognized by them for her overall sunny disposition and bubbly personality. The people she cared about were the most important thing in the world to her. She will be remembered fondly, forgotten by no one, and loved and missed by all.

Katie is survived by her husband, William Lewellyn of Sauk Centre; daughters, Victoria, Alexis, and Gladys Olson of Melrose; mother, Elizabeth Farris of Melrose; brothers and sister, Christopher Farris of Westerville, Ohio, Kent Farris of Fargo, North Dakota, and Sarah Farris of St Joseph; nieces and nephew, Amber and Michael Farris of Westerville, Ohio and Chloe and Laila Farris of St Joseph, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her father, Kent Rather; and her grandparents, Michael and Lois Farris.

Nancy K. Jeske, age 77, of Melrose, passed away Saturday, October 21, 2023 at LeSueur Medical Center in LeSueur, Minnesota surrounded by her family after a short, but courageous, battle with cancer.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 26 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose with Pastor David Mommens officiating.

Private burial will be at a later date at Oak Hill Cemetery in Melrose.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church in Melrose.

Nancy Kaye Friesen was born in St. James, MN on August 6, 1946 to Edna and Jacob Friesen.

She graduated from Comfrey High School in 1964 and Mankato State University in 1968. She married Ron Jeske on July 20, 1968. They moved around for the first few years of their marriage and then moved to Melrose when they built Melrose Fertilizer. Nancy worked with Ron for 32 years at the fertilizer plant. But her real joy was her family.

Her 3 girls were the center of her life and she spent countless hours on bleachers, in the stands and sewing and creating lots of things for them. Her children and grandchildren knew they were the most important part of her life.

Nancy also loved a nice drive, coffee with her friends, altering just about anything, a little daily chocolate, and a fun family day at the state fair.

Later in her life she found her place in the theatre as the costumer. Those people were her second family. She loved Marit and her gang, the cast, and the crew. She really loved the kids. She spent many nights watching rehearsals, even when she didn’t need to be there.

First and foremost were her grandchildren though. She traveled near and far for band concerts, baseball, softball, basketball, football, soccer, and everything in between. She treasured her time with them, and they treasured their time with her.

We know she was welcomed by her parents, her husband Ron, who passed away in 2014, and the countless animals she has loved over the years.

She will be missed by her daughters and sons-in-law, Alyssa (Joe) Rosenberger, Amber (Fred) Middendorf, and Adrea (Tim) Mauseth and her 5 grandchildren, Maddie, Jacob, Isaac, Gavin and Wyatt. She is also survived by her brother, Gene Friesen and his children Jeremy and Lindsay and brother-in-law Doug Jeske and his children John and Bob. Her kitty, Sylvia, will also miss her dearly.

Memorials are preferred to Melrose Stages Theatre, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, or the charity of your choice.

Aurelia J. Kohorst

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany for Aurelia J. Kohorst, age 88, of Albany, who passed away on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at her home. Reverend Christopher Derda, nephew of Aurelia, will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Seven Dolors Parish Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

Aurelia was born on November 30, 1934 in South Bend, Indiana to Joseph and Selma (Karmolinski) Derda. She attended St. Stanislaus Catholic School and then graduated from South Bend Catholic High School. She met the love of her life, Elmer J. Kohorst, on a blind date setup by their friends at the University of Notre Dame.

They were united in marriage on September 8, 1956 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in South Bend. In 1957, Elmer was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers and they traveled the country following the Dodger organization through 1959.

In 1960, they moved to Albany and have lived there ever since. Aurelia worked as the school secretary for many years at Holy Family Catholic School in Albany. She was a member of the Albany American Legion Auxiliary Post 482 and Seven Dolors Catholic Church where she sang in the church choir and enjoyed volunteering, and the Seven Dolors Christian Mothers.

Aurelia was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother who loved to spend time with her family. She especially enjoyed the time spent with her children and grandchildren, making certain to attend their sporting events and activities, no matter the distance. She was an avid reader and also enjoyed listening, singing with her beautiful voice, and dancing with Elmer to music.

She is survived by her children, Kevin (Mary Scepaniak) of Albany, Joseph (Stacy Adams) of Cedar Park, TX, Therese (Paul Ghyzel) of Centreville, VA, and Gary (Janet Burns) of San Antonio, TX; grandchildren, Nolan, Justin, Bradley, Jillian, Ryan, John, Elizabeth, Stephanie; seven great grandchildren;

and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 64 years, Elmer; and three brothers and two sisters.

Arthur Roehrl

Arthur P. Roehrl, age 98 of Melrose, went to the Lord in his sleep on Thursday, October 19, 2023 at CentraCare Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, October 24 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Arthur Peter Roehrl was born November 29,1924, to Ludwig and Bertha (Miller) Roehrl in St. Martin, Minnesota. He graduated from College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1949 with a BA degree in Business Administration, major in accounting. He served in the US Army from March 1943 to January 1946, primarily in 62nd Armored Infantry Battalion, 14th Armored Division in USA and ETO. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

Arthur married Margaret J. Jollie on May 23, 1964. Margaret passed on May 8, 1976. He married Patricia A. Kelly on April 15, 1978.

Arthur worked for the FBI as a Special Agent from June 6, 1949 to June 6, 1979. He served as a Special Agent and Supervisory Special Agent at the offices in Buffalo, NY, Omaha, NE, New York, NY, Richmond, VA, and Alexandria, VA. He was supervisor in Alexandria, VA the last ten years. He supervised White Collar Crime cases and subsequently did contract investigative work throughout the United States for the Agency For International Development and MSM Inc. from 1980 to 1990.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia; siblings, Melvin Roehrl, Bertilla “Tillie” Bueckers, Lavina Adamski, Lila Wessel, Elmer “EJ” (Sherry) Roehrl, Marlin Roehrl, Louis Roehrl, and John (Charlotte) Roehrl; and many nieces and nephews.

Arthur was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Margaret; siblings, Armella Bueckers and Viola Humbert.

Bench in Remembrance of Paul A. Ampe

Paul A. Ampe passed away March 19, 2021. He was an attorney who practiced law in Albany and lived in the Upsala area. He was delighted in nature and enjoyed canoeing and camping in the Boundary Waters. He looked to the future in walking his dogs, Scout and Blue, in the woods.

Paul’s kind and respectful way of life made him loved and respected by all. On his farm in the Upsala area he did have horses, Scottish Fred Ellingson standing by the bench he built in remembrance Highland cattle, chickof Paul Ampe. ens and a large garden.

Fred Ellingson placed the bench in a location on the side of the walkway near Main Street in front of the Borgstrom House Museum. It was placed near where the bandstand stood in 1916-1917 era.

LLC Paul played the cello in the St. Francis Orchestra, sang in the Minnesota Center Chorale and Tree Trimming • Removals played in the Albany Area Community Band.

The family got together with her, and as a group, we decided it was time to sell her property and move her into an apartment at a nice senior living facility. She should see a little over $300,000 from the sale of her house. Aside from that, she has about $10,000 in a savings account. The problem is, she’ll only receive $2,100 a month in Social Security, and rent at the facility is $2,600 per month. Plus she loves making donations to charities. With interest rates where they are, is a CD ladder a good place to put the money to help her cash flow expenses in the future?

-Ed Dear Ed, If this were my mother-in-law, I’d want her to do better than a CD (certificate of deposit) ladder. Even with the deficit between her Social Security income and the cost of rent, she’ll only need to see $6,000 a year from the investment to make up the difference. And plus, she’s 85. Even if she got nothing in terms of interest, the chances of her burning all the way through her nest egg before she dies are almost zero. I know the thought of her passing away isn’t pleasant, but it’s something you

As far as the charities go? Right now, she’s the charity. Maybe not in the traditional sense of the word, but it’s time for mom to come first. Only the strong can help the weak.

And when it comes to money, you’ve got to have the financial strength—the free and clear assets—to carry others. Take care of your own household first. That’s her responsibility at this point.

Ed, you’re not going to mess this up unless you put the money in crypto, or something stupid like that. If you want to do some highyield savings as a part of it, that’s fine. If it were me, I’d probably end up investing some of it too. Here’s the thing: Overall, if you could make 8% on it, that’s $2,000 a month, and it lasts indefinitely. That’s not even touching the principal. But like I said before, even if you make nothing on it, just divide $6,000 into $300,000. See what I mean? It’s probably going to last as long as she does.

Of course, there may be some other medical bills, and you’d probably want her to have a life other than just paying bills. That’s why I’d like to see that extra $2,000 a month happening. It would provide a little cushion.

And there may be a few other little things from time to time the family would have to pick up, but that’s not unusual in a situation like this.

You all can make this work for her.

Don’t be super aggressive, but don’t be super conservative either.

Dear Motor Medics, I travel 50 miles each way to work each day and share the road with a lot of large long-haul trucks. It seems that they always think they own the road. They are either going too fast or too slow or cutting me off or any other number of things that seem just plain rude to me. Why can’t they be more like other vehicles on the road? Not to say that all other vehicles are perfect drivers but it just seems as though the trucks are worse.

-Dan in Bennington, Vermont Dear Dan, Trucks can’t be like cars because there not cars. Most truck drivers are very courteous and with a little help from you they can be even better drivers. You have to remember that even the largest SUV, is a high-performance sports car when compared to a multi-ton truck. When you pull onto the interstate you can adjust your speed to stay clear of the trucks much faster than they can. Don’t expect them to move quickly for you and never position yourself directly in front of a truck, if you stop quickly, they can’t. If you feel you are being cut off often where are you driving? If you can’t see their mirrors then the driver can’t see you.

Don’t hog the passing lane going the speed limit either. They are slow uphill and fast down so share the road and leave the enforcement to the officers.

Burtrum City • October 3, 2023 Present: Jenae Ulbricht, Irene Ehlert, Juli Scherping, Romie Gessell, Chad Landowski and Brooke Thieschafer. Others present: See Sign In Sheet.

Call to Order/Pledge of Allegiance: Mayor Ulbricht called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. Approval of Agenda City Council: Add AED Update to New Business. Irene Ehlert made a motion. Juli Scherping seconded. All in favor: motion carried.

Approval of the Minutes from September 2023: Juli Scherping made motion to approve the minutes. Irene Ehlert supported. All in favor: motion carried.

Approval of Bills City Council: Total bills for the month were $3,623.88. Total receipts for the month totalled $2,032.22. Irene Ehlert made a motion to approve the bills. Juli Scherping supported. All in favor, motion carried.

Old Business: Building Art - No update at this time, and will be removed off the agenda until early spring.

Snow Plowing of the City - The city received 0 bids for the snow plowing. There is a couple interested parties willing to do the snow plowing with the city’s snow plow. The interested individuals will meet with the mayor after the meeting and arrange further details for the upcoming snow plow season.

Contract Policing Rate Increase- Effective 01-01-2024 the Policing Contract will increase by $3.

City Locks /City Signs - The City is hoping to use Sourcewell Grant Funds to purchase new locks for the community center and new welcome signs on each end of town. More to come.

Office Update - Desk needs to be set-up.

Grants-Sourcewell - Mayor Ulbricht asked the City Council if they had any additional thoughts for the SourceWell grants. None at this time. The Mayor will continue to pull more hard numbers and quotes from a few vendors. The Mayor updated all in attendance what options SourceWell is offering. $1000 in grant money, no questions asked. Or match to match grants up to $20,000 to improve the city. Examples: The city would pay $10,000 and the city would receive $10,000 in grant money. Grant money does need to be spent in one year. Grant money is based on the fiscal year. Mayor also asked if the city residents have any ideas or suggestions.

Please reach out to the city council member, city clerk, or email/call. Irene Ehlert suggested dividers in the women's restroom at the Community Center.

Permits - Bobby Velkcamp asked the city council for permission to split his 2 acre parcel within the city limits. Irene Ehlert made a motion to approve the request. Juli Scherping supported. All in favor: motion carried.

Bollig Engineering Update - The city received an update from Bollig today, stating they should have numbers to present at the November and December meeting.

City Website - City Website is about 75% complete at this time. Contents are written.

Waiting to get some pictures. Mayor Ulbricht is hopeful the website will be complete by the next meeting.

Road Signs - MnDot agreed to put out more signage. Have not heard when signs will officially be installed. The Mayor will follow up with MNDot to see the status of installation.

Halloween Trunk & Treat - The city will no longer be partnering with the church. All are welcome to set up Trunk and Treat behind the community center in front of the basketball area. One road will be closed for safety.

Faucet - The City received a quote from our primary plumber. Quote was $640 which included all parts and labor. There will be a tamper proof feature.

New Business: AED Update - The City received a donation of an AED from the St. Cloud area. The lady who donated the AED provided a contact name and number of someone who can build a special box to handle the heat and cold

climates. Pads will also be replaced. Mayor will get a quote. This is something the city is hoping to include in the Sourcewell Grant funding.

Bobby Velkcamp mentioned that there is an app for phones to show locations of the nearest AED in case of emergency.

Open Floor: Concerned attendee Dick Kuehne questioned all the centennial items that were ordered back in 1984, and why the city was giving these items away. He expressed that was taxpayers hard earned money. He also stated the city council did not vote to give or charge for items. Items in question were shirts, booklets, plates, and spoons. Mayor Ulbricht stated that when she took on the role of mayor, the office was a mess and very unorganized. With that came those specific items have not been used or touched in many, many years. Some of the items had been dirty, chewed on by mice, or had mice feces on them. Kuehne also wanted an inventory of all items, and an itemized list of what was there. He went on to say the books were given away, which is taking money away from the residents of the city. Kuehne expressed a willingness to take inventory and witness the counting. He stated the city is corrupt.

Resident Adam Ulbricht pointed out that the books and items in question are over 40 years old; they have long since been paid for and are a better use to people who want them now instead of sitting in the city office for decades. The City Council will meet and discuss a plan on what to do with the remaining items.

Former mayor Ron Strassburg also wanted an itemized list of inventory and questioned why the centennial items were given away. Attendee Tina Rhode asked the former mayor if he had an inventory list of when he was in the position. Strassburg suggested it is in the office.

Mayor Ulbricht responded that when she took the role of mayor she was handed a bunch of papers in a Busch Light box, and the office was a complete mess and unorganized.

Resident Shawn Ehlert handed $3 to the Council for a book he was given free of charge when first arriving in town by Stassburg. Resident Mick Flood also gave the Council $20 for any books that had been given away at the Burtrum Cabooze.

Strassburg also asked the Mayor and Council about items that had previously been discussed relating to potential grants. He questioned why the City doesn’t just buy the items now. Mayor Ulbricht explained that taxpayers will be better served by including everything within the grant funding, which will save the City money.

Resident Lauri Browen voiced her displeasure with the former Burtrum school property, which she lives across the street from. She became heated discussing how the Council isn’t doing anything. Browen stated she has proof

that shows the school contains asbestos. The owner of the property, Tina Rohde, responded that they have documentation from the State of Minnesota that shows there is no asbestos within the school. Browen became even more upset and shouted the current owners are lying. Mayor Ulbricht made repeated attempts to speak but was continually cut off by Browen.

Mayor Ulbricht stated that the City was shown such documentation by the state that no asbestos currently exists. Given it is private property where no City ordinance is being violated, there isn’t much the City can do. Browen got up and called the Council corrupt, drunks, and shouted several expletives aimed at the Mayor and current owner of the school property. She angrily left the meeting and was followed out by Todd County Sheriff Mike Allen.

Once order was restored, a timeline of when

potential asbestos was established. Former mayor Stassburg stated that asbestos was allegedly in the building as of 2014. It was found in bags in different areas of the school.

However, the current owner presented documentation from the State of Minnesota from a 2016 inspection showing no asbestos. Rohde recently purchased the property and has taken steps to prevent people from trespassing.

No trespassing signs are now posted along the property along with all ground-level windows being sealed up. The lawn has been cut and debris has been removed from around the school.

Adjournment -Motion by Romie Gessell, seconded by Irene Ehlert to adjourn meeting at 7:46 P.M. Motion carried.

Next City Council Meeting is scheduled for November 7th at 7:00 p.m.

From the Desk of Pastor Bruce Have you ever thought of what your legacy will be? I mean, what are people going to say or think about your life, when you pass away. One of my favorite things to do as a pastor is perform funeral services. I get to meet families that I normally wouldn’t meet!

And best of all, I get to share the hope of Jesus Christ with people that would not normally be in church on Sunday mornings. I did a funeral for a guy a few years back whose his son wrote the obituary. It started like this… "_________ was raised to be a proper Catholic boy, unfortunately, it didn’t take. ___________ had eight happy days in his life, four marriages and four divorces. The last love of his life missed the bullet of becoming his next wife because he died.” This woman was the wife of his brother who I buried two months before.

My father-in-law just passed away and as I think about what to say at his funeral, I have been thinking a lot about my own life as well. Ron was a godly man, a father to me after mine passed away so early, and a friend.

How is this possible? It is because he shared the same faith as I do. His faith says treat all with respect, and love others in the same way Jesus loved him. One of his favorite authors is Louis Lamour, which is one of my favorite authors, but he loved God’s Word most and he was a student of it.

One of Ron’s favorite books of the Bible was the Psalms. I am just going to list a couple that he had underlined just to show you what he thought was important. Psalm 139:23-24 “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there

Also, a text that really got me to think, Psalm 32:1-2 “Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord will never count against them.” This text is quoted in Romans 4:7-8 and Ron has it underlined twice, once in black and once in red.

I was packing for my business trip and my three-year-old daughter was having a wonderful time playing on the bed. At one point she said, "Daddy, look at this" and stuck out two of her fingers.
