In the “Peanuts” comic strip drawn by Charles Schulz, the scene is a classroom on the first day of school. The students have been asked to write an essay about their feelings on returning to school.

In her essay, Lucy wrote, “Vacations are nice, but it’s good to get back to school. There is nothing more satisfying or challenging than education, and I look forward to a year of expanding knowledge.”

The teacher complimented Lucy on her fine essay.

through the front door. Career success often depends on your ability to sell a product, a service or an idea. No matter what field you’re in, you’ll sell better by remembering these key pieces of sales wisdom: Satisfy the customer. There’s a meat counter in the supermarket in my neighborhood. There are always three or four clerks waiting on customers. But one of the clerks always has customers waiting for him even if one of the other clerks isn’t busy.

One day I asked him the reason for his popularity. He said: “The other clerks always put more meat on the scale and then take some away to arrive at what the customer ordered. I always put less on the scale and then add to it. It makes all the difference.”

A sales person tells, a good sales person explains and a great sales person demonstrates. A company was selling unbreakable mirror glass and had a sales contest. At the awards banquet they asked the #1 sales rep what his secret was. He explained that he had the factory cut him several four-by-four squares of the mirror glass. When he went out on calls he would put one of the squares on the customer’s desk and then take out a hammer and try to smash it. It wouldn’t break – and the impressed customer was sold.

Sell what’s on the truck. Years ago in New York City an Italian fruit vendor was teaching his son the basics of salesmanship.

“Don’t tell people we are out of peaches,” the father said patiently, “ask them to buy some of our very fresh plums. Sell what’s on the truck.”

Many of today’s salespeople could take the same advice. Don’t spend a lot of time complaining about the current state of the product line, or describing products you can’t deliver right away. Sell what’s on the truck – and your customers will be well served with the quality products you can deliver to them right now.

Get in front of prospects. Every sale starts with a prospect – a potential customer with an interest in what you’ve got to sell. Identify those who need what you’re offering. Find out where they are so you can target your sales efforts effectively.

Profile your buyers. Your product should fill a defined need. Analyze the kind of people who might benefit from what you’ve got to offer so you can tailor your pitch to them. Do they already use something similar? Do they need to be educated about what you can do for them?

Get into the customer’s mind. You have to tailor your approach to match individual buyers. Once you’ve targeted specific prospects, spend some time getting to know their personal priorities Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

Know when and how to ask for the sale. Author Murray Raphel offers these words of wisdom: “A ‘closing’ . . . defeats your primary goal in selling: the lifetime value of the customer. You don’t ‘close’ the sale. You ‘open’ relationships.

Obituaries Dora Mae McDermond

Eagle. They lived on Mound Lake most of their lives. Dora was dedicated to her family and also enjoyed crafting, traveling, snowmobiling, and taking walks in the woods. She was a member of Grey Eagle United Methodist Church in Grey Eagle.

Survivors include her children, Sharon (Richard) Beckman of Mahnomen, Christine (Robert) Gagne of Grey Eagle, and Vicki (Ronald) Hellmann of Melrose; 14 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren; brothers and sister, Norman (Mildred) Taylor of Grey Eagle, Jerry (Rosie) Taylor of New Hope, and Betty (David) Johnson of Shoreview.

Dora was preceded in death by her husband, James McDermond; parents; granddaughter, Melissa Gettel; and brother, Roy Taylor.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Grey Eagle.

Dora Mae McDermond, age 82 of Burtrum, died Saturday, October 12, 2013 at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A memorial service was held on Monday, October 21 at 1 p.m. at Grey Eagle United Methodist Church. Inurnment was in Lakeview Cemetery in Grey Eagle.

Dora Mae Taylor was born March 3, 1931 in West Sweden, Wisconsin to Reginold and Bessie (Young) Taylor. She met the love of her life, James McDermond, at the Dew Drop Inn on Big Birch Lake, and married on November 27, 1947 in Grey

Marcellus J. “Lou” Arceneau Marcellus J. “Lou” Arceneau, age 79, of Melrose and formerly of St. Martin, died on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 surrounded by his family at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m.

Friday, October 18 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Interment was in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Marcellus John Arceneau was born October 13, 1934 in St. Martin Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Daniel and Catherine (Ehresman) Arceneau. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1957 to 1963.

Lou farmed his whole life northwest of St. Martin with his brother, Val. He retired in 1997 and moved to Melrose.

He enjoyed bowling, deer hunting, casino trips, reading, and traveling. Some of his travels lead him to Germany, the Holy Land, Mexico, and seven mission trips to

Guatemala. Lou was well known for his friendly and caring personality that brought a smile to everyone he knew.

Lou was a member of St. Martin Catholic Church where he sang with the church choir and taught religion classes. He was also a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where he sang with the church choir, a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion Post 101 and the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Survivors include his brothers and sisters, Leander Arceneau of St. Martin, Sr. Ann Arceneau of St. Benedict’s Monastery, Sr. Modesta Arceneau of St. Benedict’s Monastery, Catherine (Leo) Hartung of Upsala, Marcella Eibensteiner of Elrosa, Elizabeth (Norbert) Osendorf of Roscoe, and Valentine “Val” (Bernie) Arceneau of Melrose; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Lou was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law, Frank Eibensteiner.

Serving as casket bearers were Joey Arceneau, Bob Arceneau, Dale Arceneau, David Eibensteiner, Richard Osendorf, and Mark Osendorf. Cross bearer was Cindy Hemmesch and scripture bearer was Cheryl Hellermann. Gift bearers were Lisa George and Ervin Hartung. Reader was Joan Eibensteiner.

She is survived by her husband Elmer Frie of Upsala, MN; son, Richard “Ricky” Frie of Upsala, MN; daughters, Chantelle Frie of Upsala, MN, and Nicole Frie of Upsala, MN; brothers, Lee (Cheryl) Gunderson of Dawson, MN, K.H. “Charlie” (Beth) Gunderson, David (Patti) Gunderson, and Alan (Tina) Gunderson, all of Upsala, MN; brothers-in-law, Werner (Anna Mae) Frie of Pine Lake, MN, and Fred (Madonna) Frie of Mound Lake, MN; sisters-in-law, Iline (Dennis) Murray of Arlington, WA, Lorraine Frie, and Mary Frie, both of Upsala, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Loren and Helen Gunderson; step-mother, Delores Knoll; sister, Lois Gunderson; and brother-in-law, Norbert Frie.

Pallbearers will be Michael Gunderson, Brad Gunderson, Brian Gunderson, Derek Bollig, Karl Gunderson, Bob Frie, and Jim Frie.

Gerald W. Heath, 76 year old resident of Swanville, MN passed away Monday, October 21, 2013 at his home in Swanville.

LPGE FFA Corn Drive set for Oct. 25th

The Long Prairie - Grey Eagle FFA will hold its annual FFA Camp Courage corn drive on Oct. 25th. The corn drive has grown tremendously over the past 60 years, from one chapter raising $90.00 in 1953 to over 70 chapters donating over $350,000 in 2012. This activity helps make it possible for over 4,000 children with disabilities to experience the opportunities at camp that they could not do at home, such as riding horses, swimming, fishing and many other activities.

Donations have helped build and maintain the 5 camps located in Minnesota, along with providing thousands of scholarships to enable disabled children to experience these courage camps.

LPGE FFA members will be out on Friday, Oct. 25th to ask for donations of corn and funds to help support this organization. If you have any questions about this program, please feel free to call the LPGE Agriculture Department at 218-732-2194-1705.

Ruth Christine (Gunderson) Frie, 61-year-old resident of rural Upsala, Minnesota, passed away Sunday, October 20th, 2013 after a courageous 31 year battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala, MN with Fr. John Odero officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery in Upsala, MN. Visitation will be from 10-11 A.M. Thursday at the church.

Ruthie was born on February 3, 1952, in Little Falls, MN, to the late Loren & Helen (Johnson) Gunderson. She grew up on the family farm near Upsala, MN and after graduation Ruthie attended Anoka Technical College for one year, taking classes for Fashion Merchandising. She worked primarily as a seamstress and lived in Cannon Falls, MN, New Mexico, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Nebraska, before coming back to Upsala, MN in 1980 when she worked at her brother’s hardware store in Upsala. Ruthie was united in marriage to Elmer Frie on May 14, 1983 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and settled on the Frie family farm in rural Upsala. She continued her seamstress work at home and the couple raised three children.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I have some rental properties, and the government would like to turn a couple into lowincome housing.

Is this a good idea, or should I find my own tenant?

-Marvin Dear Marvin, In these types of situations you’re generally talking about Section 8 housing. This means government-subsidized rent, and the person living there is in a lower income bracket. I put of few of my properties on Section 8 years ago, when I first started out in the real estate business. I can tell you from personal experience, it’s a good news/bad news scenario.

If you own a property in a lowerincome neighborhood, and you put it into the Section 8 subsidized housing program, the good news is that you’ll always get paid. This is because the federal government sends you your money. Unfortunately, the good news pretty well ends right there.

The bad news is that some Section 8 folks have a real entitlement mentality, and can be unreasonable to deal with on some issues. It’s also really hard to get them out of the property once they’ve taken up residence. Of course, not all people who participate in this program are like this. But you’ll run across your share of rough folks, irrespective of their race or the area of the country. More than anything, it’s the impact of the economic situations surrounding their lives.

Another piece of bad news is that the government puts lots of stringent conditions on the property. That wasn’t so difficult for me, because I always kept my places in really good shape. But if you go this route, I promise you’ll come across all kinds of guidelines and regulations, some of which are silly and not very realistic.

I got tired of the Section 8 experience pretty quickly, and I don’t own any property in that program today. If it were me, I’d just go find my own tenants. I know some things have probably changed

since my time in the program. But if it’s like most things that are government managed, the change hasn’t been for the better!

-Dave Dear Dave, My husband and I hired my brother as our real estate agent. He’s just starting out in the business and working two jobs, but it’s been five or six months and he hasn’t helped us find a house. On top of this, we signed an exclusive buyer’s agreement with him. We’re worried about the agreement, how he’ll react and our family’s reaction if we fire him. Do you have any advice?

-Andrea Dear Andrea, I think you’ve given him a fair chance.

Under the circumstances, he should be willing to release you from the exclusive buyer’s contract. I know he’s your brother, and that makes things kind of emotional.

You might get some flak from the rest of your family, too. But guess what? It’s none of their business. What are you supposed to do, stay in a bad deal just because you’re related? I don’t think so!

No, you and your husband need to sit down with your brother and let him know in a gentle way that things aren’t working.

Ask to be released from the exclusive buyer’s agreement, and wish him the best with his new career. Make sure to let him know you love and respect him, but that the situation with his multiple jobs, and the fact that you’ve made no progress in all this time, means you need to go in another direction.

Hopefully, he’ll understand. Maybe your family will be reasonable, too. But those are things you can’t really control.

Whether they want to behave like mature adults, or little kids pitching a fit, is up to them!

Mother of Mercy (MOM) Foundation Scholarship Program has completed it’s Fall 2013 application process and is excited to announce that two individuals received awards.

Mother of Mercy Foundation recognizes the importance of maintaining a trained and highly qualified workforce. The MOM Foundation offers an Employee Scholarship Program to MOM staff to advance their education to benefit Mother of Mercy Campus of Care and the senior residents we serve. Anyone employed at Mother of Mercy, working an average of 20 hours per 2-week pay period and is pursuing a degree

or certificate in higher education or in the midst of a college program related to Long Term Care settings was eligible to apply.

Swanville High School’s Female Athlete of the Month for September. She is a junior on the Bulldog varsity volleyball team this year. Danica is a hard working individual during practice and a strong leader on the court. Danica is our starting Middle Hitter and shares a Setter’s role as well. As a Middle Hitter for our Bulldog varsity volleyball team, she has accumulated, just in the month of September, 95 kills, 108 assists, 140 digs, 20 serving aces, and 41 blocks.

Swanville Schools Band Concert The Swanville High School bands will present “ROCK THE HOUSE!” on Monday, October 28 at 8:00 p.m., in the Swanville Auditorium. This concert will feature the joint Junior High and Senior High Bands playing twenty selections from their pep band repertiore. It is a fun concert to attend as all of our “band athletes” will be there performing as a team!

The audience will hear tunes from various eras of rock history such as “Hey, Baby!” and “Rockin’ Robin”

Bergmanns receive 2013 Friends of the Lake Award

By Kent Trulson The Big Birch Lake Association awarded its 2013 “Friends of Big Birch Lake Award” to Ken and Marilyn Bergmann, at the annual meeting on August 17, 2013.

The Bergmann Big Birch Lake home and lakeside project is on the east side of the lower bay, just north of Hoffman’s Bay, in Stearns County.

They have lived at this home since 1966 and installed their lakeside buffer zone in 2005. The Bergmann’s property has 75 ft of lakeshore. Their wildflowers and prairie grass buffer zone continues along all of their frontage and back up their sloping lawn from 25 to 50 ft. deep, for a total of approximately 3,375 sq. ft.

Their son-in law Mike Evenocheck assisted in the planning and installation, along with other staff from Prairie Restorations, Inc. from Princeton, MN. The Sauk River Watershed, Sauk Centre, MN, also assisted in providing ideas and cost-sharing for their project was provided by Stearns County Soil and

Water Conservation District.

The Bergmann’s project consisted of planting seedlings (plugs) of numerous varieties of wildflowers and prairie grasses, plus some 4 inch potted wild flowers and some broadcast seeding of various other wildflowers and prairie grasses.

This project’s plant mixture of approximately 50 varieties of wildflowers and 13 varieties of prairie grasses provides nectar, seeds, and shelter to songbirds, hummingbirds, and butterflies.

Some of the wildflower varieties are blazing star liatris, Lindley’s aster, silky aster, prairie larkspur (delphinium), prairie smoke, prairie onion, wild geranium, wild bergamot (bee balm), prairie rose, prairie violet, yellow violet and blackeyed Susan, to name a few.

Some of the native grass varieties are fringed brome, blue joint grass, fox sedge, big bluestem, Canada wild rye, and little bluestem, to name a few.

They chose to install this wildflower / native grasses buffer zone for several reasons. They wished to eliminate the labor

Ken states that there certainly is maintenance of some weeding, as in any flower garden, and then in the spring with mowing the dead stems / grasses or doing a controlled burn in this area. This has the advantages of eliminating the previous season’s trash and also releases dormant seeds, plus allows sunlight to then get to the new season’s flower growth.

They chose their wildflower and prairie grass seedling and seed mix because

of its variety of colors, and that it requires low maintenance. Wildflowers and native grasses have an extra deep root system which keep the soil looser and more capable of capturing / filtering rainfall runoff, and are also capable of doing well even in very dry soil / weather conditions.

Ken and Marilyn’s wildflower / native grass buffer zone project is an excellent example of stewardship practices for Big Birch Lake. It illustrates how these native plants have great endurance and sustainability, being installed several years ago, and that it continues to mature over time, providing years and years of enjoyment.

Dealing with Thorns -By Sheila Ripplinger As far as I know, thistles and thorns are never talked about in a positive way.

It seems they exist for the single purpose of being an irritation or annoyance that we somehow must learn to deal with.

After Adam and Eve sinned against God in the Garden of Eden, the Lord cursed the ground with thorns and thistles, Genesis 3:18. I am not sure how Adam dealt with the thistle problem, but today we have herbicides to apply to try to get rid of them. One thistle plant can produce 4,000 seeds! Imagine the catastrophe if they are not dealt with at an early stage!

In a pasture, thistles reduce grazing because they take over the good plant production that animals thrive on.

If you have ever been stuck by a thorn from a thistle, you know the irritability that goes with it. It is difficult to focus on anything else when you are dealing with a thorn!

There are many places in the Bible that speak about thorns and thistles.

Each time they represent a form of deceit, wickedness, or painful trials, often dealing with trouble from the enemies that come along to attack us.

Sometimes people that we associ-

ate with throughout life can be a thorn that Satan inflicts us with to irritate us and cause us pain. Many of us have personally been afflicted with that variety of thorn with no comprehensive reason except to cause us harm.

The Apostle Paul spoke about his thorn in 2 Corinthians 12. He called his thorn a ‘messenger of Satan’ that had been sent to him to torment him. Nobody knows what variety of thorn Paul was dealing with, but what we do know is that it was painful and Paul pleaded with the Lord to take it away from him.

The Lord answered him, “My Grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.”

It is possible, however, for ‘good plants’ to be deceived by the plants that produce thorns because they do at times produce pretty flowers. But before they know it, the sneaky, divisive roots have entangled the good plants and caused a whole lot of damage. This is why, just as with the thistle problem in the pasture, we must deal with the issue at an early stage before they spread their bad seeds and choke out and ruin the production of the good plants.

The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held September 24, 2013 at Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 by Vice-Chairman Louis Thompson. Members present include Supervisors: Louis Thompson and Bruce Johnson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener.

Absent: Supervisor Mike Berscheit.

Others present: Erv Herdering and Don Brown.

Sup. Johnson made a motion to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of August 27, 2013. Motion was seconded by Sup. Thompson.

Motion passed.

Correspondence included a notice of a Todd County planning and zoning meeting that included two items concerning changing the

zoning. After discussion the board agreed to send a letter of support for the land owners to get their property rezoned as it is currently used.

The board heard an update from last month’s Swanville Rural Fire Association meeting. Contract should stay about the same. Sup. Thompson made a motion to approve the Swanville fire contract as presented. Motion was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Johnson to pay all bills numbered 4854 through 4864: Rev. $150,517.31; R&B $10,741.86; Fire $12,884.47. Sup. Thompson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

The board was informed of a group of citizens concerned about the speed of vehicles and parking problems on Enchanted Loop.

The board heard from Bruce Township asking why we were not cutting the road ditch along 210th St. Bruce Township is responsible for maintenance of the eastern section of 210th St, however, Bruce Township residents are responsible for cutting the grass and brush of the ditches along their own property. After discussion Burnhamville Township will request our contractor to cut road ditch on south side of 210th St like he does along the rest of the roads this township maintains.

In the road report ditch cutting was discussed. Sup. Johnson made a motion to have the contractor make another round of ditch mowing due to lage growing season. Sup. Thompson seconded the motion. Motion passed. Areas for the road contractor to improve on included spot patching 184th St and gravel over new culvert on 341st Ave. After reviewing, Sup. Thompson made a motion to accept the snow plowing contract presented by Herdering, Inc. Motion was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $200,852.67. After discussion Sup. Johnson made a motion to move $150,000.00 to savings at the credit union. Sup. Thompson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Thompson to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:55 p.m. Next regular meeting will be on October 29, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

Blaze orange safety requirement reduces hunting accidents With Minnesota’s small game hunting season underway and the firearm deer season set to begin Nov. 9, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says making a blaze orange fashion statement this fall might not get you on the best-dressed list, but it just might save your life.

“Wearing blaze orange clothing is a safety requirement to hunt or trap during Minnesota’s small game season or deer season,” said Capt. Mike Hammer, DNR enforcement education program coordinator. “It’s important to be seen by others.”

Small Game Seasons: At least one visible article of clothing above the waist must be blaze orange when taking small game, except when hunting wild turkeys, migratory birds, raccoons, predators, when hunting by falconry, trapping or while hunting deer by archery while stationary.

Deer Season: The visible portion of a cap and outer clothing above the waist, excluding sleeves and gloves, must be blaze orange when hunting or trapping during any open season where deer may be taken by firearms (including special hunts, early antlerless, youth seasons and muzzleloader). Blaze orange includes a camouflage pattern of at least 50 percent blaze orange within each square foot. This restriction does not apply to migratory bird hunters on waters or in stationary shooting locations or to trappers on waters.

“The failure to wear to wear blaze orange puts a hunter in jeopardy of not

being seen by someone who does not take the time to properly identify their target and what’s beyond it,” Hammer said.

Hammer recommends faded blaze orange garments be replaced.

“Blaze orange, more than any other color, is the most easily seen and recognized bright, unnatural color against a natural background,” Hammer said.

“This shade of orange is the only satisfactory color for hunters to wear under all weather and light conditions. The color of the cap, vest, or coat should be plainly visible from all sides while it is being worn.”

From the standpoint of hunter safety, the wearing of this high-visibility color while deer hunting and while small game hunting in heavy cover, such as for grouse and pheasant, is a great communications tool.

“Blaze orange clothing is a tremendous aid in helping hunters maintain visual contact with one another, particularly when moving through dense cover or woods,” Hammer said. “Any hunter who has ever identified someone strictly by seeing blaze orange knows its value in keeping track of other hunters in the field.”

For those that use ground blinds, Hammer said to remember to place some blaze orange on the outside of the blind for others to see. Tent style blinds can fully conceal even the best dressed hunter.

Legislative Update -By State Rep. Ron Kresha Recently I was joined by my colleagues House GOP Leader Kurt Daudt from Crown, MN and Rep. Tim O’Driscoll from Sartell and had the chance to show them around District 09B. We started off in Long Prairie, where we met with District Superintendent Jon Kringen. Discussion focused on things the legislature can do to ease the burdens that numerous Department of Education mandates have on school districts in Greater Minnesota.

For lunch we visited Taqueria Chavez, a wonderful Mexican restaurant on Main Street in Long Prairie. We visited with Long Prairie Mayor Don Rasmussen, a representative from the local Chamber of Commerce, and the local economic development director. Conversation centered around the business climate in Long Prairie and other towns of similar size in Greater Minnesota, and how actions by the legislature have impacted business and jobs.

We also talked about how tiered water usage would impact Long Prairie, which is home to a meat-packing plant that is one of the region’s largest water consumers. Local officials underscored the need to prevent a return to a tiered system which penalizes companies that use more water (examples include the meat packing plant, hospitals, and nursing homes) and would hurt businesses that provide hundreds, if not thousands of jobs in our area.

After lunch, we drove to Little Falls to IWCO Direct to tour their factory. IWCO employs about 500 employees right here in Little Falls. We heard about the impact of the new commercial equipment repair tax. Based on last year’s repair bills, IWCO estimated they would have had to pay more than $150,000 in new taxes thanks to the budget passed in May. This is just one example of how the new misguided business-to-business taxes are affecting companies across Minnesota. That money doesn’t come from thin air - $150,000 is the equivalent of 3 or 4 jobs at IWCO. A: For those animals that are taken illegally, the DNR tries to ensure that the animal poached is not wasted. Meat from illegally harvested wild game such as deer is often donated to food shelves and other groups that serve those less fortunate. However, sometimes meat must be thrown away or destroyed. This has been especially true for fish. The DNR has an agreement with the Minnesota Department of Health to dispose of meat, such as pre-packaged fish fillets, because it is often hard to tell whether or not the packaging was done properly. In some cases, the animal or bird, or parts of the animal, such as deer antlers, are turned over to schools and other educational institutions for study.
