By Harvey Mackay I love golf – both playing and watching the pros – so you can imagine my delight when my wife Carol Ann surprised me for my birthday with a trip to watch the Ryder Cup in Glasgow, Scotland, in late September.

What a memorable experience, one that’s been on my bucket list for a long time. The only thing that would have made it better would have been a USA team victory!

Along with the spectacular scenery and outstanding golf, the thing that struck me most was the focus of all the players.

It’s easy to have focus when everything is going well, but great athletes keep their focus when they are staring at defeat. A sure way to fail is to lose focus.

I remember when my close friend Lou Holtz was asked to speak to the American team at the 2008 Ryder Cup by then-captain Paul Azinger. Holtz told the players to remember the word WIN. WIN stands for What’s Important Now? Holtz told them to evaluate the past but focus on the future. If you just made a bogey, what’s important now? Your next tee shot. If you make a birdie, what’s important now? Your next tee shot. You play one shot at a time and stay focused.

He finished by telling the players to enjoy the competition … enjoy what you are doing, but stay focused. That team won, the last time the U.S. team brought home the Ryder Cup. I watched Holtz do the same with all of his football teams at Minnesota, Notre Dame and South Carolina. As Holtz said, think only about the next play or point, not what just happened.

You can only focus on what will happen next. Don’t look back. Don’t complain.

If you maintain your focus on the future, anything can happen.

Years ago when I played golf for the University of Minnesota, my coach, Les Bolstad, drove home the point about focus. I remember practicing and getting

ready for the NCAA Golf Championship To u r n a m e n t at Purdue U n i v e r s i t y.

Les told me to focus on each shot as if it was going to be my last. I would say to myself, “This is the last drive I’m ever going to hit, so it better be good. This is the last putt that I’m ever going to make, and so on.”

I’ve carried that philosophy through to my work life. “This is the last speech I’m ever going to give, so it better be good. This is the last book I’m ever going to write … This is the last acquisition I’m ever going to make …. ” It takes that kind of focus to succeed.

I’m convinced that one of the top reasons that keeps people from getting what they want is lack of focus. People who focus on what they want to achieve, prosper. Those who don’t, struggle.

Forbes Magazine recently did a story on the nine habits of productive people. One of them was on focus, specifically using your morning to focus on yourself. The article stated that: Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

Harvey Mackay continued from page 2 It’s a big productivity killer to start your mornings by checking your email and your calendar. This allows others to dictate what you accomplish. Start your day out right by ignoring your emails and having a good breakfast, reading the news, meditating, or working out. This will ensure you’ve got the necessary fuel for a productive day.

I couldn’t agree more. I make my to-do list every morning by working backwards: What do I need to accomplish by the end of the day? By the end of the week? The end of the month? That tells me where to focus.

Is your work team focused on the right goals? The Change Management website offers this simple test: Ask everyone in your group what the organization’s mission is, how it affects their jobs, and how they contribute to it.

If a significant percentage can’t provide a persuasive answer, you need to either communicate your mission more consistently and effectively, or change it so people understand their roles better. A business can’t succeed without a common focus.

Obituaries Rita R. Hamm

Rita R. Hamm, age 95 of Melrose, died Monday, October 20, 2014 at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 24 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Ken Thielman officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday and from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

The Christian Mothers, Catholic Order of Foresters and the American Legion Auxiliary will pray at 6 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Rita Rose Marie Theroux was born September 10, 1919 in Terrebonne, Minnesota to Joseph and Lea (Quesnel) Theroux. She

was united in marriage to Rene Lizotte who passed away on July 19, 1973. Rita married Rolland Hamm on June 26, 1981 in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota and resided in Melrose.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Christian Mothers, Catholic Order of Foresters and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 101.

Rita enjoyed reading the newspaper, playing Bridge with her card groups, and watching the Minnesota Twins.

Survivors include her children, Gerald (LouAnn) Lizotte of Cloquet, Joyce Killian of Sebring, Florida, Joan (Sheldon) Budde of Grey Eagle, Judy (Mark) Cox of Mounds View, and Faye Lizotte of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; two step-children, Rolland (Pat) Hamm and Connie (Keith) MacMurry; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; brother, Marvin (“B.J.”) Theroux; and sister, Barbara Fay. Rita was preceded in death by her husbands, Rene Lizotte and Rolland Hamm; son, Joseph Lizotte; grandson, Mike Lizotte; brothers, Gary Theroux, Clinton Theroux, and Paul Theroux; and sisters, Dorothy Bower, and Eva Mae Bergeron.

Serving as casket bearers will be Sheldon Budde, Joan Budde, Gerald Lizotte, LouAnn Lizotte, Faye Lizotte, Judy Cox, Mark Cox, and Jodi Budde. Cross bearer will be Tom Budde and scripture bearer will be Kathy Budde.

Loretta A. Peifer, age 85 of Melrose, died Sunday, October 19, 2014 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m.

Thursday, October 23 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Upsala with Rev. Ken Bowman officiating. A private inurnment will take place at a later date.

Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service at the church in Upsala.

Loretta Ann Brinkman was born on October 23rd, 1928 to William and Ludwina Brinkman. She married Billy Peifer Jr. on November 13th, 1947 and raised their family together until his passing in January 1995. Loretta was a small woman who was larger than life to those she touched. Loretta believed in the multiplying power of love and adopted many people into her heart. Through her broad idea of family, she treated those she adopted with respect and love, changing their lives forever. For those who knew and loved her, she was and will continue to be a guiding light in their lives. Loretta passed from this world at 5:03 PM on October 19th, 2014. She was just four days shy of her 86th birthday.

Although few knew, Loretta was battling lung disease and was unable to overcome complications following a fall where she broke her hip.

She will be deeply missed by her siblings Eugene Brinkman of Melrose, Annamae Layton of Oregon, Gloria Lynn of Sauk Centre, Eileen Springer of Colorado, Stanley Brinkman of Round Prairie as well as countless nieces and nephews. In addition there is her nephew, David Peifer and his wife Joyce with their daughters Sophia and Shoshanna who were brought into her family after the loss of David’s parents.

A miracle from the very beginning, she was born on a farm in Lake George Township, an Elrosa MN address, at the unbelievable size of just 2-1/2 pounds.

Her parents kept her in a cigar box on the stove to keep her warm. But Loretta was not just to survive, she was to grow to become an incredible woman with a very high intelligence and an incredible depth of character. Loretta was a person of accomplishment and became a realtor in her 40’s and spent many years as an active lobbyist for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Loretta was a strong believer in human rights and the dignity of all people, and lived these beliefs throughout her life. Loretta lived life with joy and spread that joy and her love to all who met her. For those who knew and loved her, she was and will continue to be a guiding light in their lives.

Loretta taught by example and lived by her own code to treat others as she wanted to be treated and to look beyond the surface to find the real person beneath the surface.

She taught her children that even in the toughest situation, if you look for it, you can find a silver lining.

Bob Holig

Bob Holig, 67 year old resident of Swanville, MN passed away Sunday, October 19, 2014 at Ash River Trail in Orr, MN. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville, MN with Father Ron Dockendorf officiating. A visitation will be held from 4-8 P.M. on Friday and from 10-11 A.M. on Saturday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville, MN. Bob was born on November 22, 1946 in Little Falls, MN to the late Joseph and Marjorie (Canfield) Holig. He grew up and attended school in Swanville, MN graduating from Swanville High School with the Class of 1964. After graduation he enrolled at St. John’s University in Collegville, MN. Bob later enlisted into the Minnesota National Guard and was activated to the U.S. Army. He was united in marriage to Sandy Carlson on September 14, 1968 in Minneapolis, MN. Bob operated the First State Bank of Swanville since 1972 and later purchased the bank from his father in 1982. In 1989 Bob and Sandy built Shooters Pub and together they ran that until 2002 when they sold it. Bob loved and cared about Swanville, he was always willing to help the community in any way possible.

He was active with the Swanville Lions, volunteer fire department, and the Swanville American Legion. Bob was a very charming and charismatic person that always put his family as his number one priority. He was the kind of man that always wanted to go above and beyond to make everything extra special and his biggest concern was did everyone have fun! Bob loved the outdoors, especially

hunting, boating, and just being outside having a blast.

Bob is survived by wife of 46 years Sandy Holig of Swanville, MN; children, John (Tricia) Holig of Randall, MN and Janene (Adrienne Milan) Holig of Minneapolis, MN; sister, Mary (Jim) Nunke of Clearwater, MN; grandchildren, Jalen Wuchko, Stella Holig, and Clara Holig; and “his loyal companion chopper”.

Benefit for Jack Kloss to be held Nov. 22

There will be a benefit for Jack Kloss on Saturday, Nov. 22nd at the Freeport Community Center. Dinner will be served starting at 3 p.m. and a live auction to start at 7:30 p.m. There will also be a silent auction throughout the evening.

Jack Kloss was born October 25, 2011 to Andrew and Kate (Hartung) Kloss. He is the grandson of Ken and Peg (Erickson) Hartung of Freeport, MN and Scott and Sally (Michaelson) Kloss of Pierz, MN. Jack has two older sisters, Ava, 7 and Lucy, 5 and his mom is due in January. In addition, Kate has 2 brothers, 3 sisters, their spouses, 18 nieces and nephews and Andrew has 2 brothers, one sister and one niece who all love Jack very much and have been a great support system for the family.

On August 4th, 2014, Jacks mom felt a massive lump in his abdomen where she then brought him to Centra Care Clinic. Centra Care performed ultrasounds on Jack and sent him immediately down to Children’s Hospital, Minneapolis. After more thorough testing, they diagnosed him with a stage 3 Wilms Tumor which is a childhood cancer.

He underwent surgery on August 5th removing his left kidney, ureter and fifteen lymph nodes. Due to the size of the tumor which was from about his belly button wrapping around the left side to his spine, the tumor ruptured during the procedure. A week and a half later, Jack started his radiation and chemotherapy treatments. He has now finished with radiation and will have weekly chemo appointments for 28 weeks.

By doctor recommendation, Jack’s mom took a step back from her job to stay home with him to prevent him of any infections or illnesses he could pick up while he has no immune system. He currently gets three different types of

chemotherapy. He gets one every Monday and the other two alternate every three weeks. The chemo makes him very nauseous and clingy.

Jack ended up in ER the night of September 29th after chemo with a temperature of 101.7. Anytime during chemo and while he’s on his meds where his temp is over 101.5, he must go into the hospital to get antibiotics, blood work and anything else the doctor feels is necessary. They gave him antibiotics, did blood work twice and performed Xrays on him to see if he had pneumonia. The doctor did not see anything too concerning. It was a common cold that he had but with the chemo and his immune system, this is how it affected him.

Another side effect of the chemo is weakness in his ankles. He started physical therapy in September and was initially doing very well with it but then the therapist noticed several signs of weakness which include him “foot slapping”, picking his feet up completely off the floor when he walks, walking with his feet to the side like a penguin and walking on his tip toes. He was fitted for braces for his feet and has had them since October 13th.

For a 3 year old, he is doing very well with keeping the braces on his feet.

The braces are designed to strengthen his ankles and keep him walking through the rest of the chemotherapy treatments.

Jack loves chocolate pudding, ice cream, fruits and veggies. Jack loves playing dress up with his big sisters, fishing, catching frogs, being tickled, being outside and in the water, cuddling

Youth archers harvest 6 deer at Ripley Thought for and Lake Alexander Preserve eek: Cool, sunny conditions greeted youth participating in the 13th annual youth archery deer hunt at the Camp Ripley Military Reservation north of Little Falls and the 11th annual youth archery hunt at nearby Lake Alexander Preserve over the weekend.

Five deer were harvested at Camp Ripley and one at the Lake Alexander Preserve for a success rate of 4 percent for the two-day hunt. At Camp Ripley, 134 hunters participated; 15 hunters participated at the Lake Alexander Preserve.

“Youth were paired with nonhunting mentors,” said Beau Liddell, Little Falls area wildlife supervisor for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

“For some, this was the first time they had taken a deer.”

Logan Lunow of Belle Plaine harvested the first deer taken during the Camp Ripley hunt, a male fawn. Brent Waytashek of Holdingford took the largest deer, a 120-pound yearling buck.

Joshua Monk of Maplewood took the only deer at the Lake Alexander Preserve, a 113-pound doe.

The Minnesota State Archery Association and the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association were the primary hunt sponsors. The Department of Military Affairs, The Nature Conservancy and the DNR provided logistical and planning support for the two hunts.

The endless questions of growing children often become boring and frustrating. There are times when no answer will do and no explanation is ever sufficient.

The child persists, refuses to be satisfied with our best answers and the questions never stop.

Perhaps David had times in his life, as we all do, when it seemed as though his “King” would not answer his questions. It seemed as though the Lord stood far beyond and above him, unavailable and unable to answer his questions. So, what did David do? He thought that he understood Him, did what he knew He expected of him to the best of his ability. Yet we see him standing there in wonder - wanting and waiting to hear a voice and unable to bear the silence.

What was his problem? And do we have this same problem today? Perhaps.

Instant gratification and sudden success do not breed faith in God. But patient expectation and utter dependence on Him does. Perhaps our “fast-food-lanes” and “any-time-bank-tellers” have eroded the importance of waiting and watching and wondering. Deep within us we believe that He will answer our prayers and meet our needs. We know that His power is beyond our imagination. David realized this, too.

David had an intimate knowledge of God and knew Him personally. Yet, he asked the who question twice as though His power was not available. But it was!

God wanted David to wait and trust and grow.

Kindergarten Cassidy Becker: Cassidy goes out of her way to help others. She gets along with everyone, works hard, and is a great listener. She doesn’t need reminders and follows all rules.

(KH) Kaleb Bundy: He is a hard worker who always does his very best and asks great questions, but what his teacher admires the most about Kaleb is his cooperative attitude.

Kaleb wants everyone to work together, get along, and have fun. On one of the first days of kindergarten, when another student was upset that a classmate had taken her blocks, Kaleb calmly stepped in and asked her if they could work together to build something. That was amazing to witness. (MR) Owen Bruder: This student’s teacher says he displays the trait of cooperation with both his peers and teachers on a daily basis. He is described as helpful, cooperative, and willing to lend a helping hand. If he sees something that needs to get done, he immediately does it. He is eager to help his teacher and his peers. (LH) 1st Grade Steven Rodriguez: This first grader has a very positive and cooperative attitude. He works hard on his daily work and follows the classroom rules. This student is also very friendly. He is always smiling and waving to people he knows when he sees them. It is nice to have him in my class because he follows directions, completes his work and tries his best. (MB) Yissel Vasquez: She is very cooperative. She understands that in order to get things done she needs to do her part. I can always depend on her to do her job. She is a very well behaved student with a great attitude for all the things that we have here at school. I am so happy to have her in our class this year! classroom door with a smile on his face each morning. He is always ready to do his best work with his best “engine” attitude!

He is very kind to his classmates and helpful to people at his table. His ears are always listening to the directions and his eyes are following along.

He remembers to raise his hand and follow other classroom rules. He is a joy to have in the classroom because he always does his best and is kind to everyone! (PM) 2nd Grade Isabella Kuhlmann: This second grader has done an excellent job of cooperating with her peers. She has very excellent manners and is always kind and respectful to all of her classmates and her teacher. She always unselfishly volunteers to help someone that is in need.

We have so much fun dressing up in costumes; adults and children alike. It is quite entertaining and humorous to see the creative disguises that people come up with! Some even go to the extreme of coloring their skin to match the character they are masquerading as.

Costume parties can be a lot of fun!

Part of the amusement is trying to make guesses at who is actually the real person underneath the disguise!

Although we can have a great time with the innocence of putting on a costume or a masque for a party, there are other occasions in life where we find ourselves duped, betrayed, or deceived. All of us probably have at least one name come to mind when we mention that sort of betrayal. Someone perhaps that we thought we could trust, and the next thing we know we are standing there injured with a knife in our back.

There are many warnings to us in the sacred pages of the Scriptures about being deceived. Starting as early on as Genesis 3 with the serpent deceiving Adam and Eve in the beautiful Garden of Eden. It is our individual responsibility to be on guard against those who are set out to deceive. Jesus said in Matthew 24 to “Watch out that no-one deceives you.” There are many other biblical references to ‘be on guard’ against those who may ‘look good’ but on the inside they are ferocious wolves waiting to devour those who will trust them.

These deceptive people that the Bible warns us about so descriptively, do not have horrible, ugly, or scary appearances.

They can be the average looking Joe, a handsome TV preacher, a priest, a pope, or anyone! That is why we are warned so many times in God’s Word to not be deceived!

We have seen it over the years with celebrities and famous athletes that have been put up on a high pedestal. Some have even presented themselves as Christians, playing the part pretty well for a long time before the real person is revealed and then everyone is tremendously let down.

There are certain people in my life that I love and know very well that are full of flaws and faults, yet I have the highest respect for them because they are for real.

They do not hide behind a masque and pretend that they are someone else.

The people that I have a difficult time being around, however, are the ones that wear the costume of perfection and look down in judgement at everyone who dare to stand in their faultless shadows.

One of the most severe warnings that the Apostle Paul gave to the True Believing Church, the Christ followers, was about the false apostles, deceitful workmen who masquerade as apostles of Christ. So, we should not be ignorant and simply believe what all the religious leaders tell us. We need to be actively seeking out the Truth for ourselves so that we will not be so easily deceived!

Paul tells us in his warnings in 2 Corinthians 11:14-15 ‘that it is not surprising that Satan’s servants masquerade as servants of righteousness, because Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.

Their end will be what their actions deserve.’

2 Timothy 2:13-16 ~Evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have been convinced of. The Holy Scriptures are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God breathed!

By Laura Van Riper, DNR Terrestrial Invasive Species Coordinator Q: I’ve heard that fall is a good time to remove buckthorn on my land. What’s the best way to control buckthorn?

A: There are two types of invasive buckthorn in Minnesota. Common buckthorn is easily found in late fall when many native shrubs and trees have lost their leaves. Common buckthorn will often have green leaves through November.

Glossy buckthorn does not stay green as late as common buckthorn. Use caution as many native trees look similar to buckthorn, and some native trees hold their leaves into the winter.

Buckthorn plants 2 inches in diameter or larger can be controlled by cutting the stem at the soil surface and treating the stump with herbicide or covering the stump to prevent re-sprouting. Cutting can be done effectively with hand tools, chain saws or brush cutters. Stumps should be treated immediately after cutting (within two hours) with an herbicide containing triclopyr (found in many brush killers, Garlon 3A or 4) or glyphosate (Roundup and others) to prevent re-sprouting. An alternative if only cutting a few stumps is to cover them with a tin can or black plastic to prevent re-sprouting. For smaller plants, pulling or herbicide application are methods for control.
