Don’t overlook the obvious -By Harvey Mackay

This story is often told about Harry Houdini, the master magician whose proudest claim was that he could escape from anything.

During a tour of Scotland, Houdini agreed to be locked up in the strongest jail cell available, boasting that he would escape from it.

The magician was searched, his hands placed in steel handcuffs, and he was chained to a bench in the jail cell. The jailer shut the cell door and walked away, confident that Houdini would never escape. Left alone, Houdini quickly shed himself of the handcuffs and the chain binding him to the bench.

Then he went to work on the cell door.

He tried every trick in the book to pick the lock on the jail house door.

After an hour he was dripping with sweat, apparently defeated. Totally discouraged, and near exhaustion, Houdini accidentally leaned against the door and it swung open easily, sending him tumbling into the corridor. The jailer had forgotten to lock the door.

You can waste a lot of time and energy trying to open an unlocked door or solve a problem that someone else has already solved. Do some research.

Call it reinventing the wheel, but trying to solve a problem that isn’t really a problem is what you ought to call a giant exercise in futility. Before you try to spend hours looking for a solution, make sure you have a legitimate problem. In other words, don’t overlook the obvious.

As Ray Kroc, founder of McDonald’s observed, “Nothing is particularly hard if you divide it into small jobs.” And I would add, you also avoid making the problem even larger by taking small steps first, doing the least amount of damage. So often, a little tweaking is all it takes.

Consider the story about a 10-yearold boy who was riding his bicycle when he came upon a traffic jam, with cars backed up for miles. He asked a police officer what was going on.

“There’s a truck stuck under the overpass,” the officer replied, “and the fire department is trying to get it free.”

The little boy watched the firefighters working unsuccessfully with crowbars and other equipment. He asked them, “Why don’t you just let the air out of the tires?”

And that is exactly what they did.

We can’t all be like Sherlock Holmes, solving life’s mysteries and problems by uncovering the smallest detail. But we can learn to be more observant and train ourselves to look at problems from new perspectives.

“I do not fix problems. I fix my thinking. Then problems fix themselves,” said Louise L. Hay, inspirational author and speaker.

I like the approach that Malcolm Gladwell espouses in “The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference.” He writes: “A critic looking at these tightly focused, targeted interventions might dismiss them as Band-Aid solutions. But that phrase should not be considered a term of disparagement.

“The Band-Aid is an inexpensive, convenient, and remarkably versatile solution to an astonishing array of problems. In their history, Band-Aids have probably allowed millions of Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Ray and John as Kids

I recently was contacted by a good friend who had a recording of her father recounting some of his experiences during about the first 30 years of his life. John and his brother Ray had a sister and three brothers. Since John and Ray were the oldest, their experiences probably taught the younger kids what not to do.

Their first memory was going to town with their father at age 5. They were given a nickel to spend. They went to the grocery store and had a hard decision regarding how to spend the nickel. They saw the box of oranges and remembered how good they were.

However, there was a box with much larger oranges on the counter, so they bought one of the big ones. When they sat on a bench in front of the grocery store to eat the orange, it didn’t taste sweet, it was sour. It was actually a grapefruit. At age 90, neither Ray or John would eat another grapefruit.

Each day the boys were assigned a job, when the work was completed, they were free to spend the rest of the day doing “kid stuff.” Their usual jobs included weeding the garden, cleaning the barn and cultivating the potatoes.

Cultivating was done with a horse pulling the cultivator, with one kid on the horse’s back and the other trying to control the cultivator.

Their usual place of entertainment was to play at the lake which was next to their Father’s property. They would spend time fishing and swimming.

They would sometimes boil the fish

they caught for a snack. One time they roasted a couple of blackbirds. That was only one time, since they didn’t remove the insides or the feathers, they didn’t taste good. One time a neighbor boy, who couldn’t swim, was at the lake with them. They heard that to teach someone to swim, they should be thrown into the water and they would learn to swim.

So they threw him out of the boat. He coughed and thrashed around until he wasn’t coming to the surface much anymore, so John jumped in after him.

After they pulled him into the boat, Ray said that maybe it was a good thing that they pulled him out because it looked like he was just about ready to start swimming.

One fall morning, they went out on the ice and broke out holes with a stick to reach into the water to catch turtles.

They went home for the noon meal and when they returned in the afternoon, the ice was gone.

One day, the neighbor boy, who couldn’t swim, was being confined to his upstairs room. The boys found a nest of rotten eggs and since the neighbor boy challenged them to hit him with an egg, they felt required to attempt it. A couple of the eggs went past the boy and broke in his room. His mother was extremely unhappy and walked over to the boys’ mother to explain the problem. The rest of the day was quite hostile for the boys.

One day they saw a neighbor’s cows and bull in the fenced pasture. They decided to bellow and taunt the bull, since they were safe behind the fence.

The bull became angry and charged through the fence. They ran as fast as they could to some smaller trees, which they climbed, while the bull continued to bellow and snort below them. A model “T” happened to come down the road and the bull charged after the car and the kids ran home for safety.

In other words, don’t make a mountain out of a molehill.

A crowded airline flight was canceled. A single agent was rebooking a long line of inconvenienced travelers.

Suddenly an angry passenger pushed his way to the desk. He slapped his ticket down on the counter and said, “I HAVE to be on this flight, and it has to be FIRST CLASS.” The agent replied, “I’m sorry sir.

I’ll be happy to try to help you, but I’ve got to help these folks first, and I’m sure we’ll be able to work something out.”

The passenger was unimpressed.

He asked loudly, so that the passengers

behind him could hear, “Do you have any idea who I am?”

Without hesitating, the gate agent smiled and grabbed her public address microphone. “May I have your attention please?” she began, her voice bellowing throughout the terminal. “We have a passenger here at the gate who does not know who he is. If anyone can help him find his identity, please come to the gate.”

Florence M. Lange, age 93 of St. Francis, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, October 17, 2016 at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 20 St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis with Rev. Cletus Connors, O.S.B. officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

Florence Mary Batcha was born June 23, 1923 in Elmdale Township, Morrison County, Minnesota to Joseph and Mary (Elkanics) Batcha. She graduated from Upsala High School and moved to Minneapolis. On May 21, 1946 she married Hubert Lange at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus. The couple farmed and lived near St. Francis until 1994. After the death of her husband, she moved to Freeport. She enjoyed cooking, baking, canning, and gardening. She also enjoyed playing cards and BINGO, and loved spending time with her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

October 15, 2016: At 13:07 Bruce Rohde of rural Grey Eagle struck a deer on County Road 6 near County 35 in Round Prairie Township. Rohde was driving a Chrysler Aspen which sustained minor damage, Rohde was not injured.

Florence was preceded in death by her, parents; husband, Hubert Lange on October 21, 1994; son, Marvin on December 26, 1971; son-in-law, Pete Jennissen on July 14, 2013; brothers, Clarence, Raymond, and Leo Batcha; sister, Eleanor Wehseler; and sisters-inlaw, Carol Batcha and Elsie Batcha.

Serving as casket bearers will be Kelli Arceneau, Karen Jennissen, Kari Schulzetenberg, Randy Scherping, Bryan Scherping, Dale Utsch, and Brad Utsch.

Donald J. “Don” Krebs

Donald J. “Don” Krebs, age 91 of Albany, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, October 14, 2016 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, October 22 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Cletus Connors, O.S.B. officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating.

Entombment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 21 and from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Seven Dolors Gathering Area in Albany. Parish prayers will be held at 5 p.m. Friday evening at the gathering area.

Donald Joseph Krebs was born in Albany, Minnesota on July 4, 1925, the first of nine children for Benno and Anna (Solinger) Krebs. Don attended Albany public schools and graduated from Albany High School.

Don married Barbara Ziemba, the love of his life, on August 7, 1948, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Opole, Minnesota. He worked for Franklin Manufacturing for seven years (19481955), but was always interested in farming. He was able to purchase a farm from his uncle in 1955 and farmed and raised a family on the Krebs family farm until 2014. This was a dairy farm, with up to 36 dairy cattle, pigs and chickens, and the family grew hay, oats, corn, alfalfa and straw. Don was always interested in the details of agriculture, listening to farm radio stations and reading journals to follow weather conditions and market

However, while farming was Don’s career, his first passion was his family.

He was fiercely devoted to Barb, their nine children, their grandchildren and their great-grandchildren, enjoying frequent visits and family gatherings on the farm.

Don was a long-standing member of the St. Joseph Society at Seven Dolors Church in Albany. He enjoyed watching sports and spending time on the farm property - walking and working the land, tending the animals, and sitting on the glider swing with Barb, watching the barn swallows.

Don is survived by his wife, Barbara; children, Bonnie (Ken) Wright of Maple Grove, Jeannie (Paul) Danielson of Colorado Springs, CO, Loren (Sandy) Krebs of Sonoita, AZ, Tom (Lori) Krebs of Melrose, Terry (Judy) Krebs of Albany, Twila (Rick) Bourgon of Bloomington, Tammie (Tim) Sharp of Detroit Lakes, Deb (Mike) Peters of Albany, and Troy (Kelly) Krebs of Albany; siblings, Eileen Schiemann, Beatrice Hockert, Bernice Wiehoff, Howard Krebs, Delphine Carey and Rita Schneider; 15 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenny Krebs; sisters, Doreen Tamm-Gerads and Hazel Habiger; and daughter, Maureen.

Serving as urn bearer will be all of Don’s children. Cross bearer will be Justin Krebs and scripture bearer will be Derek Peters. Eleanor R. Dierkhissing Eleanor R. Dierkhissing, age 101 of Freeport, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, October 14, 2016 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 20 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Interment will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery in New Munich.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church in Freeport.

Eleanor Rose Dierkhissing was born June 2, 1915 in Melrose Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Joseph and Gertrude (Schwieters) Herzog. She was united in marriage to Norbert Dierkhissing on October 6, 1936 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Eleanor lived in New Munich until moving to Freeport in 1959.

She cooked at the Melrose Hospital for 27 years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport, Christian

Norma C. Thull

Norma C. Thull, age 78 of New Munich, passed away on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 5 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating.

Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Norma Catherine Thull was born March 12, 1938 in New Munich, Minnesota to Anthony and Clara (Sand) Thull. She graduated from Melrose High School in 1955 and worked in Minneapolis for a number of years. Norma then moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and worked at General Electric as a clerk for over 25 years until her retirement. She lived in Milwaukee until moving back to New Munich in the spring of 2016. Norma enjoyed working crossword puzzles and watching television.

Budde, age 89, of Avon who passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud. Rev. Gregory Miller and Rev. Kenneth Thielman will concelebrate and burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 PM on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church. Parish prayers will be prayed at 4:30 PM on Thursday at the church.

Ralph was born July 31, 1927 in Avon to Bernard and Frances (Moening) Budde. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge, Ralph returned to the family farm in Avon. He married the love of his life, Margaret “Marge” Smith on September 26, 1959 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon. Marge was a hard catch, but she is so glad she took Ralph up on his persistent offer. Ralph

took over the family farm and continued to farm mostly dairy and beef cattle. He was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church; his faith was his compass. Ralph also served as Collegeville Township Supervisor for many years. He enjoyed vegetable gardening, four wheeling, driving horses, baseball, carpentry, and tending to the farm. Ralph was a simple, hardworking, lovable man. He always wanted to make people feel comfortable in his presence and would often say “Thanks for comin.” Above all else, family meant the world to Ralph and he will be missed by all who knew him.

Ralph is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marge; children, Brenda (Steve) Douvier of Albany, Dan of Avon, Sue (Shawn) Winter of St. Joseph, Karen (Dean) Ritter of Avon, Julie (Val) Knobloch of Eau Claire, WI, Connie Troke of Winona, Lynn (Dan) Burg of St. Martin, Curt (Angel) of Albany, Sarah (Jeff) Herdering of St. Rosa; siblings, Bob (Ella) of Albany, Rita (Bill) Ryan of Minneapolis, Vonnie (Art) Diedrich of Avon, MaryAnn (Eddie) Waletzko of Waite Park, Corrine Szafranski of St. Cloud; sisters-in-law, Elenor Budde of Avon, Donna Budde of St. Cloud; 20 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and greatly anticipated the birth of twin great grandchildren in February; and many nieces and nephews.

Marvin John Saarela was born July 7, 1944 in Virginia, MN to the late John and Ina (Maki) Saarela. He grew up and attended school in Pike Sandy Township and Embarrass, MN. Marvin enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard in 1963 and was honorably discharged. He attended college in Willmar, MN and the University of MN in Duluth and graduated with a bachelors degree in electrical engineering. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Thell in December, 1966. Mary Ann McDonald

Mary Ann McDonald, age 79 of Sauk Centre died peacefully on October 15, 2016 at Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota with her family at her side.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m.

Thursday, October 20th at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Father Greg Paffel presiding. Interment will take place in Long Bridge Lutheran Cemetery in Little Sauk Township, Todd County, Minnesota.

Visitation will be on Thursday from 9-10:30 a.m. at the church prior to the service.

MaryAnn Engel was born October 10, 1937, the daughter of Carl and Anna Catherine (Ahrens) Engel in Birchdale Township, Todd County, Minnesota. While in high school, Mary Ann was recognized as outstanding swimmer holding the fastest breast stroke record for nearly 30 years.

Mary Ann graduated from Humbolt High School in the class of 1955. Mary Ann played on the Dairy Queen Jets – a women’s softball team in St. Paul. On April 21, 1956, she was united in marriage to Dale DeWayne McDonald in Saint Paul, Minnesota. To this marriage five children were born. Besides being a good mother, she worked at Armour Processing Plant, was a bookkeeper for several business; worked at Jennie-O processing plant. She was proud to say that she and her husband, Dale owned and operated the Ward Springs Store from 1975 to 1992. At the store, she and Dale shared the responsibility of stocking groceries, pumping gas, cooking, and serving food and beer. She made lots of friends and always worked hard. For fun, Mary Ann enjoyed playing cards, fishing, playing Bingo and calling Bingo for residents at the nursing

home, going to the Casino, sewing quilts, cooking and baking. She loved to travel and always enjoyed visiting with relatives and friends. Reading books, especially westerns and putting puzzles together were several favorite pastimes.

Mary Ann was a member of Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, Christian Women, and the American Legion and VFW Auxiliary. She also served as the treasurer for Birchdale Township for a number of years.

Survivors include: her husband of 60 years, Dale of Sauk Centre; children, Dorothy (Ernie) Bauer of Sauk Centre, Susan (Jeff) Tschida of Sauk Centre, Dan (Diane Meier) McDonald of Mayer, and Cathy (Michael) Lensing of Ward Springs; daughter-in-law, JoAnne McDonald of Cottage Grove; 18 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Arlene (Charles) Kirk of St. Paul, Tom (Patty) Engel of Inver Grove Heights, Wayne Engel of Sauk Centre, Ron (Mary) Engel of South Saint Paul, and Toni Martinson of Newport; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her son, Timothy McDonald in 2011; grandson, Kevin McDonald; parents, Carl and Anna C. “Katie” Engel; and brothers and sisters, Robert Ahrens, Evelyn Engel, Leona Engel, twins, Jerry Engel and Janet Guerra, and Carol Grzeskowiak.

Salvation, for example, does not assure us of a life of prosperity and worldly success, a life free from sickness and suffering, a life that has no stress or conflict, a life that is all sunshine and no showers. But we do have the assurance of God’s forgiveness and the freedom from the law and its curse, from judgment and fear and guilt and certainly death.

And we do have the assurance of Christ’s presence in our lives that promises us that “He will never leave us nor forsake us,” be with us when we are sick and suffer, will give us His peace “that passes all understanding” when we are stressed and threatened by the challenges of life.

But ultimately and finally “from the Lord comes (our) escape from death.”

Escape literally means exit. As Christians we can, with David, be assured that while there are many entrances to death - or many ways that we might die - our exit from death has been provided by God’s grace through Jesus Christ, our Savior.

This exit, however, is also our entrance into heaven.

Helen M. Parsons

Helen M. Parsons, age 107 of Albany and formerly of Sauk Centre, died peacefully on October 13, 2016 at Mother of Mercy Care Center in Albany, Minnesota.

A prayer service was held at 10:30 a.m.

Saturday, October 15, 2016 at PattonSchad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre with Father Greg Paffel presiding. An interment service took place at Saint Paul’s Cemetery in Sauk Centre.

Helen Marguerite Heitzman was born March 13, 1909 in Hospers, Iowa to John and Catherine Heitzman. Helen spent her early years in Iowa and later moved to Minnesota with her family. She was united in marriage to Freeman Parsons on January 2, 1935 and made their home

in Sauk Centre. The couple owned and operated the Main Street Theatre in Sauk Centre for many years. They were the proud parents of their only child, Dennis Parsons. Freeman preceded Helen in death on March 30, 1989. She continued to live in Sauk Centre – at her home and the Catholic Charities apartments – and later moved to Mother of Mercy Campus of Care in Albany.

Helen was a member of Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.

Helen is survived by her daughter-inlaw, Bonnie Parsons of Mt. Pleasant, SC; a dear friend who became like a daughter to Helen, Jonie Sundermann of Sauk Centre; and many nieces and nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Freeman; son, Dennis in 2011; her parents; her sisters, Martha Bernard Paaulson, Frances Faber and Rose Neuroth; and her brothers, Edward Heitzman, John Heitzman, Anton Heitzman, and Joseph Heitzman.

Wilfred “Willie” F. Herzog Memorial services celebrating the life of Wilfred “Willie” Herzog, 74, were privately held to honor his wishes. Willie passed away Tuesday evening, Oct. 11 at his home with family at his side.

Willie was born on January 3, 1942 to William and Flora (Ritter) Herzog in St. Rosa. He was one of six children and was raised in a farming family. On September 15, 1965, he married Shirley Strharsky at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud and they welcomed five children. Willie enjoyed fishing when he was younger and reading western novels by Louis L’Amour. He was a self-taught handy man who loved to come up with projects to do. He would spend time thinking about ways to improve things, figuring them all out in his mind before tackling fixerupper or remodeling jobs. “Go at it like you want to get it done,” is a saying his kids often heard growing up. Willie was a

great dad who instilled a good work ethic in his children; he was also a wonderful husband. He had a keen sense of humor, enjoyed good-natured teasing and making others laugh. Willie disliked being idle and felt that keeping things simple was the best way to go. He worked as a dairy farmer and also raised chickens on his family farm with Shirley. Willie will be missed by his family and friends.

Willie is survived by his wife of 51 years, Shirley Herzog, Albany; his children John (Michelle) Herzog, Paynesville; Mike (Julie) Herzog, Andover; Paul (Mary) Herzog, St. Rosa; Michelle Herzog, Albany; Brian (Jennifer) Herzog, Forest Lake; his brother Jim (Joan) Herzog, Owattona; his 19 grandchildren and his 9 great-grandchildren.

Burnhamville Township September 27, 2016 These are unapproved minutes.

The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held September 27, 2016 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chairman Mike Berscheit.

Members present include Supervisors: Mike Berscheit, Louis Thompson and Bruce Johnson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Others present: Marlene Clark, Ron Schmidt, Allen Johnson, Sandy Johnson, Becky Dawson, Rachel Boechermann, Blake Schmidt, Doris Wedl, Thomas J. Goerger, Don & Launette Tisdale, Ervin Muellner and Erv Herdering.

The minutes from the regular meeting of August 30, 2016 were approved as presented on a motion

by Sup. Berscheit. Motion was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. A resident in attendance disputes calling Forest Lane a “private road” in last month’s minutes.

For correspondence the township received letters from Swanville Rural Fire Association with the new contract, notice of planning and zoning meeting, and notice from public works concerning putting up more road closed signs at intersection of Co. 104 and 321st Ave. The board heard an update from Sup. Johnson on the Rural

Swanville Fire Association meeting. Sup. Johnson made a motion to accept the fire contract as presented. Sup. Thompson seconded the motion and the motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5314 through 5330: Rev. $677.47; R & B $17,987.68; Fire $17,028.28. Sup. Thompson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

A supervisor met with the DNR and some residents on Forest Lane.

Back in the 1960’s and 70’s the DNR proposed and built a 350 foot road, however even that length was never approved for maintenance by the township. The road is in poor shape and needs to be brought up to township standards by the residents before being considered for approval by the township board according to the township attorney.

Residents asked what needs to be done. Board suggested a contractor would have to clear several trees, widen the road and the turn around and class 5 gravel would need to be added. Residents were given the list of township minimum road standards. The board suggested residents talk to the county about the process of special assessment to get project started.

In a letter from county planning and zoning a property owner is proposing a one lot development on Douglas Drive. The board saw no issues with the proposal.

The board was asked to show support for a proposed solar farm by a land owner on Morrison Line

Road. The board wanted more information concerning the project before signing a letter of support.

After discussion Sup. Berscheit made a motion to accept the bid from DK’s Tree and Landscaping for clearing trees on 210th St. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion.

Motion passed.

Sup. Thompson made a motion to accept the snow plowing contract from Herdering, Inc. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

After discussion, brush cutting jobs will be done as needed by hiring Ervin Muellner on a motion by Sup. Johnson and a second by Sup Thompson. Motion passed.

In the road report the contractor will work on reshaping 341st Ave. to fix the wash outs on the side of the road in hilly areas. The board was waiting to hear from county about specifications on catch basin for Pillsbury Bridge area. Pillsbury Bridge replacement project is nearing completion.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $111,198.07. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m.

Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

-Seth Dear Seth, I’m really sorry you’re going through this. I’ve been there, so I know this is a scary time for you. There are some short- and long-term goals to think about in a situation like this, but let’s look at the immediate future.

Go crazy about finding some kind of income. I don’t care if it’s delivering pizza during the week and working at the mall on weekends. Even if it doesn’t completely replace your previous income, it will give you some cash to pay bills and stay afloat. On your off days, and before and after work, you can line up and do interviews for a more stable, full-time job. You may even have to trade off babysitting duties with your wife so she can earn some money too.

While all this is going on, have a garage sale and sell anything you don’t need or want anymore. Just about anything that can be turned into income should be turned into income.

In the process, prioritize your bills and other financial responsibilities. Take care of food first, then utilities, the mortgage or rent, then transportation.

You guys don’t need to see the inside

of a restaurant for a while unless you’re working there, and if things don’t get better by Christmas, any gifts you give should be handmade crafts.

This is doable if you two work hard, pull together, and focus. God bless you guys, Seth.

Since you’re just starting out, I’d strongly advise you to set up a separate checking account for your business.

That’s the only way to accurately tell exactly what’s going on within the business. When you co-mingle business money with grocery money and things like that in your personal account, you’ll never have an accurate picture of what’s really happening with your business.

My wife and I manage our lives by a calendar, and we intentionally make time for each other, our family and other personal things that are important to us.

So many people make the mistake of not planning and, as a result, have to work crazy hours as a rule. Before they know it, life outside the office has passed them by.

Maintain your physical health: Exercise not only helps you stay healthy, it also boosts your energy levels. This helps in staying focused, which leads to better productivity at home and at work.

I’m a big proponent of exercise, as are many of my team members. One of my leaders has a wife, plus two children under the age of 5. It’s tough as an adult with responsibilities to find time to take care of yourself. But this guy rolls out of bed every day at 5 a.m. for an hour-long workout before his family wakes up.

If something is really important to you, you’ll find a way to make time for it.

Get help: First, realize you’re not Superman. Even with all of his superpowers, the Man of Steel couldn’t accomplish everything he wanted - and he never had to make payroll or fight rush hour traffic!

To successfully juggle all of life’s demands, you must prioritize and let go of things. Are there errands or jobs around the home you can hire someone to do? Can you delegate some tasks or outsource projects at work? Hiring an assistant who can handle some administrative work and organize your schedule can lead to increased productivity.

There will always days and even weeks that are work heavy, just like there will be periods of time when you can concentrate on life and family. But a little planning goes a long way.
