Hate, anger lead to danger -By Harvey Mackay Like an old barn, many of us have been around a long time. We’ve withstood a lot of life’s storms, bad weather and hard times, but we’re still standing, even though we find ourselves leaning to one side from time to time.

The danger comes when we lean toward anger, bitterness, hatred, cursing and a lot of things we shouldn’t.

We need to prop ourselves up away from these leanings so we will stand straight and tall again.

This little analogy is particularly appropriate for our times, as we see so much hatred and anger all around us.

Those emotions cause so many problems not only in society, but also personally.

Hate blocks clarity, clouding our judgment and causing us to be more impulsive and aggressive. Anger can lead to unacceptable actions that we immediately regret. Rather than enabling us to see possible solutions, we become so entrenched in our own position that we become irrational.

Experts say chronic hatred and extreme anger can add to our stress and take a toll on our physical and mental health, including blood pressure, liver function and stroke. Apply that to a business, and the results are financially devastating. The cycle is deadly.

Psychologists say that carrying hostility around can kill us. Wishing evil on someone does more damage to us than to the objects of our anger and hatred.

Joseph Thomas Ph.D., a practitioner, teacher and consultant in Chinese medicine for more than 25 years, says “Hatred affects everything it touches . . . Hatred loses its power when we as

individuals and collective units encourage flexibility of mind and body as a valuable asset to all of life.”

Hate has a way of bringing out the worst in people. Whether used as a means to cover up feelings of fear or pain, hatred can quickly become all-consuming. If hate can be taught, so can love.

Most of us have experienced feelings of hatred at one time or another. If you have wronged someone, you should make amends or at least apologize.

Remember that hatred blocks clarity.

It causes you to be more impulsive and aggressive. Hate prevents you from seeing things that may be beneficial in solving problems. But attacking someone just because of who they are is destructive at every level. Learn to let hatred go, and instead look for positive points instead.

On the reverse side, you will encounter people who dislike you for petty reasons or out of jealousy. But don’t let that unjustified hostility get to you.

WikiHow offers up some great suggestions on dealing with haters. When you are on the receiving end, your response can often diffuse a bad situation. Beware if you recognize yourself as the bully.

Ignore them. Bullies try to provoke a reaction, so don’t respond. Don’t engage them in any way. If the hater physically or verbally assaults you, get another person or someone in authority involved. Try not to provoke bullies.

Project confidence. Self-confidence is your best defense against a hater because they start to realize they can’t get to you.

Stay positive.

Avoid haters. Don’t hide, just stay

away from situations where you might interact with haters. If you must confront haters directly, explain respectfully where you’re coming from.

Prove them wrong. The best way to quiet a hater is to show them up. If they say you can’t do something, do it well.

Let their hate fuel your ambition.

Nip it in the bud. When you see a situation escalating, remind the other person that you are willing to work together but only in a respectful atmosphere. Let them know you have no intention of tolerating anything less.

As poet Maya Angelou said, “Hate, it has caused a lot of problems in the world, but has not solved one yet.”

An old Cherokee told his grandson a Native American legend about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, “My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all. One is evil and filled with anger, envy and hate. The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, humility, kindness, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”

The grandson thought about this for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one I feed.”

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne The woods As we get older our memories are covering an ever increasing number of years. Each year involves additional changes.

We remember more pleasant times, many of which are from our childhood. Our memories include many special people that have since passed and places that have changed or no longer exist.

Some of the changes have occurred quickly, while others have gradually disappeared. Examples include burning of a building, while other buildings have been allowed to gradually deteriorate from lack of care. Some of these items have special individual memories for us, even though we have not discussed these remembrances with anyone. It is just a part of us that we didn’t share, not because they are insignificant, but because we felt that they probably wouldn’t be at all meaningful to others.

As a kid, I spent many hours in a certain wooded area. Part of that time included getting the cows, along with many hours just exploring or hunting.

There were certain spots that held special memories, which are kept fresh in my mind due to occasionally recalling them.

As I walk through the woods, I remember the area where wild plum trees grew and I picked cake pans of plums for my Grandmother to bake plaumen

kuchen, (plum coffee cake). June berries, pin cherries and choke cherries grew along the edge if the woods. There is the spot where we needed to cut a 22 inch cherry tree with a cross cut saw. We used it for firewood, which today would be considered wasting precious lumber.

There is also the steep south-facing hill that produced wild strawberries every year, remembered as strawberry hill.

There was also an area of hazel brush, that produced hazel nuts in abundance. There is that large red oak tree that was always a good place to look for squirrels.

There is the spot where mother and I were pulling chokecherry trees over the back of the pickup, when one broke and I rapidly found myself colliding with the ground, causing some happy laughter. Back a little further is the spot where a heifer had a calf in the middle of a very thick prickly ash growth. She was especially protective of her newborn and it required an hour to convince her that we weren’t planning to hurt her calf and we really appreciated her birthing location.

There is the spot where I misjudged how far the drag would swing out when turned and wrapped the last section around the fence post.

There is the old rock pile that was one of the monuments to many hot dirty hours on the field. There’s also the other rock pile that ultimately became the dump.

There are the three hackberry trees that I have remembered through the years and the bees nest that I shot with a sling shot and got stung.

Thanks for going with me on a walk through the woods. I’ve asked you along, because I wanted you to see some of my fond memories as a kid.

Oh, I forgot to mention that this woods now has a new owner who plans to tear out the trees and turn it into a field....

Tiffany and Jason Klaphake are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Allison Marlene Klaphake, born on September 15, 2020 at 1:51 a.m. at CentraCare Health-Sauk Centre.

An invasive vine not seen in the United States in six decades has been discovered in Stearns County. Sherry Kutter of Grey Eagle, a University of Minnesota Extension Master Naturalist, first spotted the vine along the Lake Wobegon Trail in Holdingford. Officials have identified it as rough potato (Metaplexis japonica), a type of vining milkweed.

Rough potato is native to eastern Asia. It has not been previously reported in North America except in 1958 in cornfields near the Iowa State University campus in Ames where it may have been part of a research project during World War II. How rough potato arrived in Holdingford is a mystery.

Bob Dunning, Stearns County Agricultural Inspector, mapped the vines locations and notified landowners. The densest infestations are along the South Two River near a ballfield. Bob said “I was surprised by the number of locations I found it in once I began scouting for it. I’m grateful to Sherry for discovering this issue before it had become even more widespread. Rough Potato is a very aggressive climber and it has an amazing ability to completely cover other vegetation.”

Because of the magnitude of the infestations, the Stearns County Parks Department, Conservation Corps Minnesota (CCM), and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) began removing thousands of seedpods, each containing many seeds. removal over several years will bring down the infestations.

“While we may never know how rough potato got to Stearns County, we can be diligent so this and other invasive plants don’t spread throughout Minnesota,” said Monika Chandler, MDA Invasive Species Specialist. “Seeds and plant parts like to hitch a ride, so cleaning equipment, pets, and our clothes before leaving an area can help prevent the spread of unwanted plants.”

There are no vining milkweeds native to Minnesota. Both black and pale swallow-worts are vining milkweeds and have been found at a limited number of locations in the state. Mildred M. “Millie” Gans

Mildred M. “Millie” Gans, age 91 of West Union, passed away Sunday, September 27, 2020 at her home at Mother of Mercy Assisted Living in Albany, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held next summer in hopes COVID restrictions will be lifted.

Mildred Marie Imdieke was born April 16, 1929 in Meire Grove, Minnesota to John and Fredericka (Macke) Imdieke. Mildred grew up on the family farm near Meire Grove. She moved to West Union to work at Schlicht’s store in the late 1940’s. While working at the store one day, Roger Gans entered with a crock jug to be filled with vinegar for purchase. It was more than vinegar that caused him to return to the store. They fell in love and married May 9, 1950 at St. John the Baptist Church in Meire Grove. Millie was a busy partner on the farm helping with the chickens and eggs, feeding and raising calves, butchering chickens and creating hearty meals for the balers, harvesters and their five children. As the kids grew, Millie’s tasks increased as she drove the kids to boy scout meetings, piano lessons, band practice and Saturday confessions at church. When the kids were sick with measles and chicken pox, she read books to them while they recovered.

Favorite titles included Tom Sawyer, Little Women and Heidi. Millie always made sure the girls were decked out in Easter bonnets and white gloves for church. For fun, Millie and Roger loved playing cards with their card group. Those close friendships and the bond with their special neighbors lasted throughout their lives. Millie enjoyed helping with the sausage supper in West Union. On the eve of the supper she could be found peeling potatoes well into the night. Millie and Roger took great pride in their children as they attended St. Bens and St. Johns – just down the road from the farm. There were children’s weddings to attend and eventually grandchildren and great grandchildren to spoil. Millie used her mother’s recipe to make oatmeal chocolate chip cookies for all of them. She delighted her sons-in-law with fudge nut bars and rhubarb pie. She loved helping the grandchildren feed the baby calves and cup the newborn chicks in their hands. Her love and patience were unrivaled.

Roger’s unexpected death found Millie moving to Sauk Centre. She made new friends and found meaning in praying at the St. Faustina Chapel at St. Paul’s Catholic Church. She loved going for walks, traveling, and playing cards. Millie was blessed with a parade of great grandchildren. She managed to “keep it straight” as to “who belonged to which one.” Many believed she rehearsed their names before family gatherings. Babies always looked and listened intently when held by her – mesmerized by her voice. The entire family gathered a year ago to celebrate Millie’s 90th birthday. All five “Gans Kids” and spouses, 14 grandchildren and all 18 great grandchildren gathered to celebrate this remarkable woman.

She was in her element with the youngest on her lap and all the rest crowded in to be close.

Eventually Millie moved to Mother of Mercy Assisted Living in Albany. Her room was decorated with the artwork of her great grandchildren. She cheered for the Minnesota Twins, listened to music on Alexa, played Bingo and attended church daily. One of her favorite things was eating the dilly bars from the Albany Dairy Queen. Because Millie was growing frail the last few weeks of her life, three-year-old great granddaughter, Greta asked her mom if great grandma Millie made it to heaven yet? Greta added, “She will be so happy there.” Amen, Greta! Amen.

Millie was a member of St. Alexius Catholic Church in West Union and was an active member of the Christian Mothers. She later became a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church and Our Lady of the Angels Catholic

Church in Sauk Centre.

Survivors include her children, Carol (Jerry) Jansen of Sauk Centre, Judy (Craig) Anderson of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jan (Mick) Poepping of Naperville, Illinois, John (Steff) Gans of Lander, Wyoming, and Mary (Dale) Schmitz of Naperville, Illinois; 15 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren; God children, Rita Ohman, Mike Imdieke, Bonnie Werner, Karen Sadlowsky, Scott Pischke and Rita Eltgroth; sisters and brothers, Irene Mergen, Fred (Margie) Imdieke, Sister Alice Imdieke, O.S.B., Doris (Al) Ethen, Richard Imdieke, and Aloysius (Sandra) Imdieke; sisterin-law, Margaret Breitbach; and brother-in-law, Father Richard Gans.

Millie was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Gans; parents; grandson, Kevin Jansen; brother and sisters, Agnes Imdieke, Celine Caspers, and John Imdieke; and brothers and sisters-in-law, George Mergen, Viola and Vern Bromen and Gertrude and Al Krebsbach.

Roger King

Roger L. King, age 82 of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, September 20, 2020 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 26 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose with Rev. David Mommens officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Roger Leigh King was born July 4, 1938 in Wilmot, South Dakota to Otis and Elizabeth (Babb) King. He grew up on the family farm with 10 siblings. Roger graduated from high school and then attended Electronic School for a year. He married Gayle Christensen on September 4, 1960 in Wilmot, South Dakota.

The couple moved to Melrose in 1972, where Roger worked for Melrose TV and Marine for close to 30 years.

Roger was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose. He enjoyed fishing, reading, puzzles, watching westerns, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Gayle King of Melrose; children, David (Terrie) King of Bland, MO, Duane (Pamela) King of Aitkin, Nancy (Kevin) Kuhlmann of Sauk Centre, Stacey (significant other, Allen Vogel) King of Melrose, and Kristi (Ronald) Gieske of Sauk Centre; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Shirley Thompson, Barbara (Jim) Madison, and Franklin (Cele) King.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents; great-granddaughter, Brianna King; and siblings, Myrna Remund, Wendell King, Beverly King, Donna Deville, Merton King, Alta McNish, and Leslie “Bud” King.

Charles “Charlie” Gebeke

On Sept. 19, 2020, Charles “Charlie” Gebeke went to heaven to be with his many family and friends who have passed before him.

Charlie was born in Fargo, North Dakota, Oct. 28, 1942, to Francis (Schuman) Gebeke and Edward Gebeke.

He attended country school and Detroit Lakes High School. After graduation he worked as a carpenter before moving to Melrose to work at Gebeke Transport.

Charlie joined the National Guard where he was a member for 20-plus years. He was a member of various organizations in Melrose. Charlie opened his own repair shop in 1984 and continued working there until retiring due to poor health. After retirement you would find Charlie watching car races, visiting his auto shop and going out to lunch with friends.

Charlie was a car enthusiast to the strongest extent. He loved racing in earlier years and left behind 41 boxes full of car magazines, in addition to a shop full of car parts. His last day living was spent in his auto shop and even to that day he could tell you the year and model of his car parts.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary; daughters Debora (Larry) Sutton, of Hinckley, and Pamela (Matt) Clausen, of Missoula Montana; two grandchildren Andrew and Ashley Sutton; sisters Mary Kay Brown, of Madelia, Patricia Schererr, of Osseo, Linda Ketola, of Eveleth; and brother Chuck Gebeke, of St. Paul.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Francis Gebeke Amundson and Edward Gebeke.

A visitation was held at Sacred Heart Church in Freeport on Sept. 25, 2020 with a memorial service, followed by a Melrose Veterans Honor Guard military ceremony.

Donavon Delorme

Donavon Delorme, Red Lake Falls, MN, 73, passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at Sanford Medical Center, Thief River Falls, MN. Mass of Christian burial was held Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Red Lake Falls, MN with Father Bob Schreiner Officiating, Burial was at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery.

Donavon Delorme was born March 6, 1947 in Crookston, MN, the son of George and Alice (Schue) Delorme. He was baptized into the Catholic faith. He attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School and Lafayette High School, graduating in 1965. Donavon furthered his education at Bemidji State University earning a Tech Degree, graduating in 1969.

While Donavon was in college he worked part-time for the Soo Line Railroad. In 1969 he started teaching school. From 1969 until 2004 when he retired, Donavon taught at Melrose, MN. He was also in used auto and trailer sales in Melrose and Red Lake Falls, MN. Donavon enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, wood-working, traveling and hobby farming. He was a member of Red Lake Falls Sportsman Club, Melrose Federation of Teachers and Melrose Chamber of Commerce.

He is survived by his companion, Sherryl Plotnik; step-daughter, Emilie (Jason) Thoennes, Garfield, MN; along with many cousins, and his hunting companion, Bailey.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Alice Delorme.

Shirley C. Vait

Shirley C. Vait, age 94 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully surrounded by family Monday, September 28, 2020 at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 p.m.

Saturday, October 3 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating.

Interment will be held in the parish cemetery.

Shirley Clara Weisensel was born May 5, 1926 in New Ulm, Minnesota to John and Isabel (Jutz) Weisensel. She married Rudolph “Rudy” Vait on September 12, 1946 at Church of the Visitation Swan Lake, rural Nicollet.

Rudy and Shirley were married for 72 years and 8 months to the date. The couple farmed near Fairfax, Minnesota until moving to a farm near Sauk Centre in 1959. Rudy and Shirley moved off the farm in 1985, but Shirley kept busy by volunteering at Holy Family School.

Shirley was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, St. Paul’s Catholic United, Z-Bowl Bowling League, Senior Bowling, and one of the founders of the Sauk Centre Senior Citizens. She enjoyed playing BINGO and cards, activities at the nursing home, and loved visiting with her family, especially the grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Norma Westendorf

Norma A. Westendorf, age 91 of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 29, 2020 at St. Benedict’s Senior Community in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held with immediate family.

Norma Ann Budde was born in Melrose Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Edward and Johanna (Enneking) Budde. She married Herman Westendorf on May 29, 1950 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. The couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this year. Norma was a homemaker her whole life and did seamstress work out of her home.

Norma was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, the Christian Mothers, and the Mission Club (her card playing group). She enjoyed traveling and baking.

Survivors include her husband, Herman “Hermie” Westendorf of Melrose; son, Dean (Mary) Westendorf of Burnsville; grandchildren, Nicholas (Regina) Westendorf, Ross (Whitney) Westendorf, and Leah Westendorf; great-granddaughter, Hannah Westendorf; sisters, Mildred Dingman, Ruth (John) Fink, and Marge (Jerry) Petermeier; and brother, Edward (Diane) Budde.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Leona Agnes Auer, age 95, will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 2 at Seven Dolors Church in Albany.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the Mass at church from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Leona passed away peacefully on Sunday at Country Manor in Sartell.

Leona was born on August 10, 1925 in Albany, the daughter of Bernard and lsabella (Clarke) Wehseler. She was united in marriage to Benedict Auer on October 5, 1948 in Albany, and their union was blessed with five children. Leona and Benedict shared over 60 years of dedication and faith before Benedict’s passing in 2011.

Leona was a very active member of her community; she served as the president of numerous organizations including the Christian Mothers, St. Jude’s Mission, and the Legion auxiliary as well as the nursing home auxiliary.

Leona will always be remembered by her sons, James Auer, Kenneth (Alison) Auer, Mark (Joy) Auer, and Patrick Auer; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Howard Goldfine; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended family, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Benedict Auer; daughter, Margaret Goldfine; parents, Bernard and lsabella Wehseler; siblings, Loretta (Al} Mossman, Al Wehseler, Edmund (Agnes) Wehseler; and daughterin-law, Bonnie McLellan.

Donald J. Lapos

Donald J. Lapos, 95 year old resident of Flensburg, MN, passed away Friday, September 18, 2020, at the Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids, MN. A private family visitation and funeral will take place on October 6, 2020, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Flensburg, MN. Donald Jerome Lapos was born on November 28, 1924 in Little Falls, MN to the late George and Mary (Kotch) Lapos.

He lived his whole life farming and working in Morrison County. After retiring from dairy farming, Donald maintained roads for Culdrum Township. He moved to Flensburg where he maintained streets and the lawns for the town of Flensburg for years. Donald was an avid baseball fan and an active softball player for years for the Flensburg local teams.

He loved fishing and hunting, a season never passed without Donald spending time on the water and in his deer stand. Donald loved and lived for his community and will truly be missed by everyone in Flensburg.

Donald is survived by his wife of 72 years, Marian Lapos; son, Robert (Nancy) Lapos of Ponsford, MN; granddaughter, Meigelle Lapos of Austin, TX and grandson, Nolan Lapos of Plymouth, MN. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary Lapos; son, Gilbert (Bert) Lapos; siblings, Emma, George, Florion, Benedict and Joseph.

Mary Ann Noble

Mary Ann Noble, 82, of Long Prairie, passed away Monday, September 28, 2020 at her home with her family by her

side. There will be a private graveside service with a memorial scheduled at a future date.

Mary Ann Miller was born to Paul and Marie (Reichert) Miller on December 16, 1937, in Little Falls. She graduated from Little Falls High School. On October 23, 1959, she married Duane Noble in Wadena. While Duane was in the military, the couple moved to Washington before moving back to Long Prairie. Mary was a homemaker, raising her three children until she began working as a librarian at the Great River Regional Library.

She was the head librarian for more than 20 years before her retirement. Mary continued with her love of reading into her retirement, and took many trips to Branson, MO. Her faith was very important to her, and she was always willing to pray for others. Her upbeat manner would bring others to smile. She was very hospitable, making all who visited feel welcome, comfortable and well fed.

Mary will be missed by her husband Duane, daughter Cynthia Noble of Long Prairie and son Scott (Wendy) and granddaughter Maggie Noble of Falcon Heights; her stepmother Gladys Miller; her sister Bonnie (Alan) Larson of Bloomington, IL, brothers Donnie (Elaine) Miller of Chippewa Falls, WI, and Jim Miller of Minneapolis; sisters in law Jeanette Wallbank and Kaye Noble (Tom); brothers in law Bill Noble (Snookie), Rod Noble (Lois), and Russell Noble; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, daughter Debora Noble and brothers Duane and David Miller.

A n n e Rocholl, 98, Long Prairie, passed away Thursday, September 24, 2020 at her home in the Meadow Place Assisted Living in Long Prairie. There will be a private graveside service with a memorial scheduled at a future date.

Anne Kiemele was born September, 27, 2021 to Edward and Caroline (Weber) Kiemele in Linton, ND. After graduation from Northwestern Bible College, she worked at KTIS radio where she met her husband of nearly of 70 years, Arnold “Rocky” Rocholl. The couple married in 1951 in Minneapolis. Anne embraced the rewards and challenges of being a pastor’s wife. Always eager to support her husband in sharing the love of Jesus, she embraced their ministries in Anoka, Onamia, Aitkin and Storden, MN. Anne had a passion for Woman’s ministries, including Christian Women’s Club. She took every opportunity to sing in choirs. Known for her wonderful cooking and with her gift of hospitality, Anne always assured guests felt welcome and well fed. She was never idle, had a quick and contagious laugh and loved creating beautiful quilts and afghans for family and friends.

She will be sorely missed by her husband Arnie; children Linda (Greg) Benson of Gowrie, IA, Rocky (Sue) Rocholl of Ft. Wayne, IN, and Patti Erickson of Pequot Lakes, MN; grandchildren Kelly (Shea) Mangus, Ryan Erickson, Ali (Matt) Loaney, Jon (Alyssa) Rocholl, Katie Rocholl; greatgrandchildren Connor & Cassidy Mangus and Adriana & Brynlee Loaney; brothers Raymond Kiemele of Bismarck, ND, Erwin Kiemele of St Marys, GA and LeRoy Kiemele of University Place, WA; sisters Caroline Weishair of Plymouth, MN and Violet Walther of Bismarck, ND. She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Emanuel, William, Albert, Edward and Fred Kiemele; sister Ruth Pudwill and son-in-law Steve Erickson.

Sometimes they are reasonable and easy to work with, but others are rude and pushy. Your advice would be appreciated.

Dear Paul, You’ll run into all sorts of collectors, no matter what kind of debt you have.

Occasionally they are friendly and understanding, while others can be downright mean and nasty. Whatever their approach is, you have to keep in mind they’re all after one thing—your money.

Most debt collectors prey on a person’s emotions and lack of confidence. If you don’t know your rights, they can scare you by using bogus threats. Understand what I’m saying here, Paul. If you have debt, you have a legal and moral obligation to pay it. At the same time, you need to calmly and confidently control these kinds of conversations. You might have made some financial mistakes, but that doesn’t mean you should allow someone to abuse you.

When it comes to dealing with debt collectors, keep track of all the calls and emails. Write down the names of anyone you talk to and when they called. A record of all contact is important, and it will make it easier to report them if they violate the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. If the collector agrees to settle the debt, get it in writing and keep the document as proof in case they “forget” they made the

Also, be completely up to speed on your accounts. Know what you owe, who you owe, and have a record of all the payments you’ve made. Knowing the facts gives you the upper hand in any situation.

Don’t be intimidated by debt collectors, either. Calmly explain your situation, the reason you’re behind on the debt, and how you plan to pay it off. Don’t get emotional and let yourself get drawn into an argument or shouting match. If they insult you, or yell or curse at you—yes, this happens sometimes—hang up immediately.

Financial troubles like debt can make every aspect of your life feel messed up. If you want to get back on track, start living on a written, monthly budget, and attack your debts using the debt snowball system.

It’s not easy, and it takes discipline, hard work, and sacrifices, but it’s worth it!

Theft: September 11, 2020: Deputy Craig Pogatshnik took a theft complaint of several stop sings in Krain Township.

Someone stole all four stop signs at the intersection of 440th Street and 220th Avenue.

The township supervisor who discovered the missing stop signs also reported several others that were taken. There were no accidents as result of the missing signs.

September 20, 2020: Three mail boxes in a row that had been damaged in Avon Township. One of those was struck with a pumpkin and the other two with a what might have been a baseball bat.

September 22, 2020: Damage to mailbox in Krain Township. The mailbox was knocked over, and a shattered pumpkin was scattered in the driveway and road. The owner had also just driven home and had seen other pumpkin remnants on Co. Rd. 10 near Co. Rd. 152, as well as a mailbox that was lying in the middle of the road. Deputy Okerstrom located two other damaged mailboxes in that area.

Dear Motor Medics, I am driving a 2005 Dodge Mega Cab truck with the 5.7 gasoline engine. Over the past year it has developed an exhaust leak. The leak started as a chirp that was only noticeable when cold and it progressed into a loud noise that now is audible all the time. I have had it in for an estimate and two shops have given me two quite different estimates which include replacing both exhaust manifolds with new parts. These shops are so far apart I just do not know where to take it. One is almost $900 less than the other. Is there any advice you can offer me?

-Dave in Wheaton, Minnesota You are not alone Dave. Exhaust leakage on trucks has been an issue for many years. When a truck has pulled loads, they get the exhaust extremely hot which warps the manifolds. Even trucks which do not see a lot of pulling can eventually warp. When the warpage occurs the rusted exhaust manifold hardware often breaks, and this is where the extra money comes in. Getting the broken bolts out of the cylinder heads can be exceedingly difficult. Sometimes they simply screw out but often they require welding nuts to them for extraction or drilling and taping to remove them. In the worst cases the head has to come off which is even more. Always get an estimate which includes all possible outcomes, so you are not left surprised.

ing issues with my speedometer. The gauge will just stop working sometimes for a day and other times for a week and then it may pop up and work for a month by itself. Three shops have not been able to find it because it always works for them although it did quit for a few miles for one of them. The car is still nice, but I do not want to keep spending money to fix the speedometer. What can I do to get it working? One more thing. When the speedometer quits the cruise will not work but it drives perfectly.

As for your speedometer, if a shop cannot see the issue for an extended period, they will not be able to repair it. Going back for a check may be a waste of cash. When it fails completely, then is the time for repairs. If the car works perfectly you may want to try an on the dash GPS unit with a speedo function as an option.
