don’t have the funds. We know we should exercise, but it’s easier to sit at home and binge watch last season’s episodes. We want that dessert, but know it’s better if we don’t eat it.

Temptation is a desire to engage in short-term urges for enjoyment, that threatens long-term goals, according to Wikipedia. In the context of selfcontrol and ego depletion, temptation is described as an immediate, pleasurable urge and/or impulse that disrupts an individual’s ability to wait for the longterm goals, in which that individual hopes to attain. More informally, temptation may be used to mean “the state of being attracted and enticed” without anything to do with moral, ethical, or ideological valuation.

Temptation is all around us. For businesses it might be bad-mouthing your competition. I can’t tell you how many sales people I’ve come across who do this, but it’s a dangerous turn-off for customers.

For example, a co-worker was recently in the market for a new hot tub. He chose not to go with a specific manufacturer because the sales rep kept bad-mouthing his competition.

Another temptation is to toot your own horn. I learned many years ago that if you can get someone else to broadcast

your accomplishments, the message will go a lot further. No one likes a shameless self-promoter.

Similarly, I see many companies and individuals putting personal needs ahead of business needs. Be careful not to overspend because nothing sinks a ship faster than people and companies overspending.

Another huge temptation for companies is expanding too fast. It’s helpful – perhaps critical – to have a seasoned veteran or two check your lavish plans. This same plan can be said for new executives coming into companies and doing too much, too soon, too fast. It’s better to listen and educate yourself before you shake things up too much.

I came across the book, “The Five Temptations of a CEO” by Patrick Lencioni. He lists the most common pitfalls faced by leaders.

The #1 temptation is choosing status over results. Many leaders are more interested in protecting their career status than focusing on company results.

Achievement – not ego – should be the driving force.

The #2 temptation is choosing popularity over accountability.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Saturday Night as a kid

Thinking back about Saturday Night while we were growing up brings to mind happenings that were almost ritualistic. We, almost without exception, did things on Saturday Night that made us ready for the special day, Sunday.

One of the main things that were done on Saturday Night was the bath.

It seems that almost everyone had a bath on Saturday Night. Before indoor plumbing, the bath was usually done in either in a wash tub or an oblong white porcelain tub, with either pink or black decorative edge on the rim. The water in the tub was usually used by several family members before it was dumped in the yard. The location of the bath in the home was usually in the kitchen, since many homes didn’t have a bathroom.

Without sewer and running water, the use of a larger amount of water usually happened near an outside door or near a pail which was also dumped outside.

The warm water for the bath was heated on the wood stove.

When homes became modernized, the tub water came out of the faucet.

However, many of us recall taking a bath after other household members and the warm water faucet produced cold water and we still had to add warm water from the kitchen stove reservoir or a pan of warm water from the stove. It was much more comfortable than a wash tub.

Another Saturday Night ritual for boys occurred about every four weeks.

Haircut night. I’m sure that a few of the guys still remember getting a hair cut with a hand-powered clipper. For those who have never come in contact with one, it was chromium colored, had blades on the business end which moved back and forth with the squeeze

and release action on the two handles.

It was moved up the neck, clipping as it went and the hair were cut. The part which was most memorable was the pulling of the hair which this procedure produced. The older guys tolerated the pulling, but the younger boys cried, screamed and tried to hide when it was time for a hair cut. Electric clippers were a great invention!

Sunday Shoes needed to be polished.

This was usually a really big project.

In Summer it was done on the porch steps and in the Winter was done on the basement steps. Sunday Shoes were usually also school shoes. They were subject to the usual kid abuse from rain, dew, recess ball games, mud and the rest of the things boys do. They had to be brushed with a vegetable type brush and than polished. Several layers of polish were applied and buffed to hopefully make the shoes look much more new than they actually were.

Saturday Night was also the night when the guys shaved. For some, this was done only on Saturday Night.

Somehow the shaving water had to be hot enough to steam when the cloth was put on the face to soak up the whiskers, followed by the almost musical sound of the shaving brush in the cup stirring up the shaving cream. In earlier years, the straight edge razor was used, but in later years a safety razor made the job much easier. Sharpening the blade of the safety razor was done by placing it in a blade holder, which was stroked along the leather razor strap. That way one didn’t have to belong to the “dollar a month” shave clubs advertised today.

Saturday Night was needed so that people could take their minds off of their daily worries and actually pay attention and improve their own physical selves.

everyone around them accountable and communicate what is expected of them.

If leaders do this successfully, they will be respected.

Coming in at #3 is choosing certainty over clarity. Leaders don’t have the luxury of waiting until they are absolutely certain in making a decision.

There’s nothing wrong with saying, “I was wrong.” Clarity is usually more important than accuracy.

Choosing harmony over conflict is temptation #4. Most people don’t want to rock the boat, so they seek harmony.

However, establishing productive conflict is important, and that usually only happens with passionate conversations where people challenge each other.

Finally, the #5 temptation is choosing invulnerability over trust.

T-R-U-S-T is the most important fiveletter word in business. Without trust you have nothing. And to trust your employees you must put your careers in the hands of others and be vulnerable.

Face it: It’s hard to resist temptation.

Sometimes the difference between wanting something and having it is too great. Sure, once you give in to

temptation, you feel better. But that feeling usually doesn’t last.

We live in an instant gratification world. But studies show that people who delay their gratification succeed more in finances, relationships and achievements.

A number of years ago, I had the opportunity to become an owner in an emerging European basketball league.

It was an enormous temptation. I love basketball, and to be a team owner would have been a dream come true.

But when it was my turn to commit, I passed. The other owners were shocked, to say the least. Sadly, the league folded a year later, and the owners lost millions.

Temptation avoided. No regrets.

Obituaries Marvin P. Stroeing

Marvin P. Stroeing, age 79 of Freeport, formerly of New Munich, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 20 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Inurnment will be held in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in New Munich.

Marvin Peter Stroeing was born November 24, 1937 in Melrose, Minnesota to Frank and Anna (Buettner) Stroeing. He was united in marriage to Marlene Goebel on May 7, 1966 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony. After marriage, the couple lived on the Tidy Turkey Farm where Marvin worked for 20 years. He then worked at the Swany White Flour Mill for 20 years, retiring in 1996.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New

Munich and St. Leo Court 786 Catholic Order of Foresters. Marvin enjoyed woodworking and fishing, watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Marvin was a “meticulous” tinkerer, working diligently to “fix” it until he thought it was right.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene Stroeing of Freeport; children, Scott Stroeing of St. Cloud, Sandra Warzecha of New Munich, Shawn (Staci) Stroeing of Melrose, and Shannon (Kelly) Stroeing of Byron; eight grandchildren, Amanda, Alex, Andrea, Joshua Taylor, Sabrina, Connor, Logan, and Wyatt; two greatgrandchildren, Elise and Oliver; brother, Vernon (Margie) Stroeing of Freeport; and sister, Rita (Fred) Stang of Minneapolis.

Catherine E. “Cathy” Koopmeiners, age 74 of Melrose, died Thursday, October 12, 2017 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m.

Monday, October 16 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment was held in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Catherine Esther Tiemann was born February 4, 1943 in Melrose, Minnesota to Anthony and Mabel (Schultz) Tiemann.

She was united in marriage to James Koopmeiners on September 5, 1964 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose.

Florence J. Pietrowski Florence J. Pietrowski, 93 year old resident of Swanville, MN, passed away on Sunday, October 15, 2017 at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Sauk Rapids, MN. Burial will take place in the St. John the Baptist Parish Cemetery in Swanville, MN. A visitation will be held from 10-11 A.M. on Thursday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville, MN. Florence J. Maciej was born on March 26, 1924 in Little Falls, MN to the late Simon and Sophie (Cichon) Maciej.

She grew up on the family farm in the Swanville/Sobieski area. Florence was united in marriage to John Pietrowski on June 8, 1943 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Sobieski. Together they farmed in Sobieski and raised four children. They

enjoyed going out, listening to old-time music and she never missed a dance.

Florence worked at the Swanville Café and managed the Municipal Liquor in Swanville. She retired in 1989 and moved into St. Cloud, MN. Because of medical reasons, Florence moved into Good Shepherd Senior Living in Sauk Rapids, MN. Florence was an excellent cook and baker and always kept an assortment of houseplants growing. She loved her flowers. Florence also enjoyed playing cards, bingo and trips to the casino. She was an avid traveler with her children.

Florence loved spending time with family and friends, and especially with her grandchildren.

Florence is survived by son, Bob (Bev) Pietrowski of Parkers Prairie, MN; daughters, Mary Ann Jasdzewski and special friend Wes Norrgran of Waite Park, MN and Marlene (Jim) Wolbeck of Swanville, MN; brother, Sylvester Maciej of Fridley, MN; sister, Caroline Krystosek of St. Cloud, MN; 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Florence was preceded in death by parents, daughter, Kathy Hedin and two infant children; husband, John Pietrowski; two brothers and seven sisters.

Cathy enjoyed bird watching, playing cards, and loved drinking her coffee throughout the day.

Duane Johnson

D u a n e Johnson, 66 year old resident of Swanville, MN, passed away on Thursday, October 12, 2017 in Randall, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 AM on We d n e s d a y, October 18th at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville, with Fr. Ron Dockendorf officiating. Burial was at St. John The Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Swanville. Arrangements were with Shelley Funeral Chapel in Swanville, MN. Duane was born on May 28, 1951 in Little Falls, MN to the late Leonard and Donna (Pfaff) Johnson. He grew up in Swanville, MN where he attended Swanville Schools and graduated from Swanville High School. He enlisted in the U.S Army and proudly served his country from 1970 until his honorable discharge in 1972. Duane was united in marriage to Joyce Plakut on May 15, 1976 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Sobieski, MN. The couple made their home in Swanville and were blessed with four children, Bradley, Karla, Matthew, and Kelsey. Over the years he was employed at Grain Belt, Sanitary Milk and Ice Cream, Gessell Feed Mill, Kuepers Construction and he owned and operated Johnson Stump Removal. Duane was an extremely devoted husband, father and community member. His commitment to his fellow neighbors and city and county residents was second to none.

He dedicated much of his time to the Swanville American Legion, Swanville Lions, Swanville Planning and Zoning, Morrison County Relay For Life, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and Morrison County and the City of Swanville, MN. Duane was elected as Swanville Mayor in 1989 and served until 2006.

He was active in the Swanville Lions Clubs for over 30 years where he served as past president, secretary and received

many local and national awards through the years as a Lion. Duane was elected as Morrison County Commissioner on November 7, 2006. He was sworn into office on January 9, 2007 and proudly represented the citizens of District 5 until his death on October 12, 2017.

Commissioner Johnson served as Chairman of the County Board in 2011 and 2013 and represented Morrison County on many committees including; South County Health Alliance, Region 5 Development Commission, Mississippi Headwaters Board, the Morrison County Yellow Ribbon, Community Health Services Executive Committee, Community Corrections Advisory Board, Drug Court Steering Committee, Morrison County Rural Development Finance Authority, Community Development and much more. Duane saw the organization and County through many years of change and growth. His leadership, willingness to serve, friendly and personable approach was appreciated by staff and those who served with him through the years.

Though Duane spent many endless hours attending meetings and making sure they ran smoothly, nothing made him happier than being around his wife, children, grandchildren and all the child care children. To relax he would retire to his camper on Long Lake and just enjoy the quiet it had to offer. Duane will forever be remembered for the love and dedication he showed to family, friends, and his community.

Swanville Sr. High School September Minnesota Through The Lens: Student of the Month Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the September Senior High Student of the Month, Lawrence Mettler.

Lawrence is the son of Randy and Marge Mettler.

Lawrence enjoys sports, camping, and hunting with friends and family. Lawrence plans to attend a 4-year college to obtain a degree in the natural resources field. He has been active in all his school activities since seventh and eighth grade: football, basketball, track, theater, speech, student council, and band. Lawrence’s achievements include the ExCel Award and 4H Youth Conservationist Award. Lawrence’s favorite thing about school has been Mr. Pi’s History and Econ classes.

He advises other students to work hard, but have fun, set your priorities, and stay focused. Outside of school, Lawrence is in Boy Scouts, youth group, and 4H Activities Director.

Recognizing someone as “father” carries with it a very special significance. Immediately, and without doubt, the one who we call “father” is the one who is responsible for our being born.

Without the one we call “father” we would not be in existence.

Because a “father” is responsible for our existence, he then becomes responsible for our well-being. Whatever concerns us must ultimately concern him.

Whether it is food or clothing, shelter or healthcare, protection or education - it

is his responsibility to meet that need.

It is a role that is not to be taken lightly or without careful thought and planning.

There is more, however, than a responsibility factor. There is the relationship factor. This includes acceptance and openness, honesty and trust, a willingness to hear what is on the child’s heart and in the child’s mind. There must be loyalty and faithfulness between father and child. One without the other leaves children lacking.

In Psalm 89 David said to God, “You are my Father, my God, the Rock - my Savior.” If an author were writing about David today he would probably say that “David led a charmed life.” He would look at the times he escaped his enemies, faced death, struggled with depression, and knew what abandonment was all about, could hardly face God because of His guilt, and knew the extreme pain of grief.

David, however, knew that it was not about “living a charmed life.” No. It was about a Father who not only provided for and loved His child - but became his Savior.

When the bank makes a profit – and they should make a profit – the stockholders, who are owners of the company, get that profit. It can be dispersed in the form of dividends, or the value of their stock is increased.

A credit union is run more like a cooperative. Technically speaking, it’s operated not for profit, and the owners are the credit union members, who are also customers.

As a customer of a credit union, whatever you pay into the credit union – the “profit” – is returned to the members in the form of increased services or actual dispersements. Sometimes, you actually get a check from the credit union.

A lot of banks don’t like credit unions, and say they have an unfair advantage because of their non-profit status. This really isn’t true. Credit unions, with whatever “profits” are made, put that money right back into creating cheaper checking accounts, better interest rates on loans, or higher interest rates on savings.

A bank could do the same thing, if it were willing to make less profit. So, there’s no disadvantage. They’re just trying to keep stockholders happy and sell stuff to customers. But really, that

I’ll make about $10,000 this year as a trainer, and $25,000 to $30,000 working events as a DJ. I’ve almost got all my debts paid off, and I love both of my side jobs. I was wondering how to tell when I’m ready to leave my day job and concentrate on personal training and my DJ work.

-Steve Dear Steve, I always tell people to first get to a point where their side hustle is generating almost as much money as their day job. I want the boat pulled as close to the dock as you can get it, so that when you make the jump from the dock to the boat you don’t hit the water.

In your case, I would want the $10,000 you earn from personal training to look more like $20,000. When you reach that level, combined with what you’re making as a DJ, it would create a pretty safe situation for you to quit your day job.

Maybe you could cheat a little on the personal trainer money, because you’re making as much or more as a DJ as you are in your day job. Otherwise, you’re giving up $25,000 for $10,000 and only hoping the personal training gig will grow. That’s not a good idea.

I’d like to see that hope proven a little bit more before you walk away from a day job.

This week I wanted to look at some characteristics of successful people.

Successful people aren’t that different than you and I in most cases. Many times it is the little things they do that set them apart making the successful over average or even below average.

The following is a list of the skills, talents, and characteristics you’ll find in successful people: 1. Successful People Have a Dream.

They have a well-defined purpose. They have a definite goal. They know what they want. They aren’t easily influenced by the thoughts and opinions of others.

They have willpower. They have ideas.

Their strong desire brings strong results.

They go out and do things that others say can’t be done.

It only takes one solid idea to achieve success.

People who excel in life are those who produce results, not excuses. Anybody can come up with excuses and explanations for why he hasn’t made it. Those who want to succeed badly enough don’t make excuses.

2. Successful People Have Ambition. They want to accomplish something. They have enthusiasm, commitment, and pride. They have self-discipline. They’re willing to work hard and to go the extra mile. They have a burning desire to succeed. They’re willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.

Spend more time thinking and planning before you make your decision, and you’ll make better decisions.

Tip: When you don’t get the expected results from the decision you’ve made, change your course of action. Decisions should never be carved in stone.

9. Successful People Have the Courage to Admit They’ve Made a Mistake. When you make a mistake, admit it, fix it, and move on. Don’t waste a lot of time, energy, money, and/or other resources trying to defend a mistake or a bad decision.

When people are wrong, they may admit it to themselves. If they are handled gently and tactfully, they may admit it to others and even take pride in their frankness and broad-mindedness.

But people become very defensive and angry when others try to cram their mistakes down their throats.

10. Successful People Are Self-Reliant. They have the skills, talents, and training that are needed to be successful.

11. Successful People Have Specific Knowledge, Training, and/or Skills and Talents. They know the things they need to know to be successful. And when they need information, knowledge, or skills and talents that they don’t possess, they find someone who does possess them.

12. Successful People Work with and Cooperate with Other People. They have positive, outgoing personalities.

They surround themselves with people who offer them help, support, and encouragement. They are leaders.

13. Successful People Are Enthusiastic. They’re excited by what they’re doing, and that excitement is contagious.

They draw people to them because these people want to work with them, do business with them, and be with them.

Landowners asked to help keep snow Annual Enrollment

MnDOT encourages farmers to join the Standing Corn Rows program to improve safety As farmers prepare to harvest their crops this fall, they should consider leaving a few rows of standing corn to help control blowing and drifting snow, as well as improve visibility, on Minnesota roads this winter, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

MnDOT pays farmers to leave standing corn rows, hay bales or silage bags to protect selected state roads.

Farmers are compensated per acre for leaving standing corn rows and per lineal foot for strategically stacked bales or silage bags. A typical standing corn row treatment is about a ¼ mile long and one acre in size, with 12 rows of corn left standing. Average compensation to the landowner is about $1,000 per acre.

This “living snow fence” can be designed and constructed to fit into individual land use and farming operations.

Ears of corn are allowed to be harvested by families, clubs, organizations and church groups.

“Standing corn rows provide a unique opportunity to use a resource already being grown adjacent to our highways to provide blowing snow control,” said Dan Gullickson, MnDOT’s snow control program coordinator. “They help MnDOT quickly deliver snow control treatments while reducing the state’s snow and ice removal costs.”

It takes less than two weeks to have a signed agreement between the farmer and the local MnDOT district office.

In a recent survey, conducted by the University of Minnesota Extension, farmers who participated in MnDOT’s

standing corn row program were asked why they took part in the program. In many cases participants recognized that blowing snow was a problem on their roads in the winter and saw the benefits of the program. Respondents often mentioned that they felt good about doing something that helped their community by providing a “safe zone” on the highways along their fields.

One respondent to the survey said, “We get a lot of compliments from people. Businessmen, nurses and teachers all use that road to get across town. They appreciate the clearer driving. They are especially grateful if there is a big storm.”

“The standing corn row program provides opportunities for leadership in, and service to, the community by helping keep local roads open to traffic during snow events,” said Gullickson.

“This program is a great example of the rural community coming together and making a difference during the winter driving season.”

Last winter MnDOT’s Twin Cities Metro District successfully recruited farmers along the Highway 169 corridor near Belle Plaine to leave 4.34 miles of standing corn rows.

“This is the first time that a corridor approach to managing blowing snow along this plow route was achieved,” said Tony Johnson, Shakopee Truck Station supervisor, who led the Highway 169 recruitment efforts. “We’re glad to see that it will be matched again for the 2017-2018 winter.”

There will be an increased deduction of about $25.00 from your Social Security check in 2018, which will cover the increased cost of the doctor portion of your coverage. Supposedly this will be offset by an approximately 2% increase in your Social Security check. The government giveth and the government taketh away.

The supplementary coverage most of us have, has had some unique changes.

Many plans are now increasing premiums, reducing coverage in the nursing home, adding an ambulance charge, in-

creasing the deductible on prescription drugs, charging a co-pay for emergency room visits, charging co-pays for hospital in-patient stays and some plans are now restricting coverage to specific areas or contracted medical networks.

Many coverage options are available, both with the carrier you currently have and with other supplement carriers in your area. Some people say, “I never use prescription drugs, so I don’t worry about a deductible.” Others are not concerned if they will have to pay a co-pay of up to $1500.00, if they are a hospital inpatient. Every person has specific concerns regarding their coverage and should make an effort to explore the options.

Check for invasive species when removing docks and equipment for seasonal storage The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is reminding lake property owners to carefully check boats and trailers, docks and lifts, and all other water-related equipment for invasive species when removing equipment for seasonal storage. This is important as new zebra mussel infestations were initially reported by people making end of season inspections of docks, boats and boat lifts.

“These recent confirmations serve as a reminder of the importance of carefully examining all equipment when taking it out of the water,” said Heidi Wolf, DNR invasive species unit supervisor.

It’s especially important to follow Minnesota’s law and keep docks and boat lifts out of the water for at least 21 days before putting them into another body of water. This state law is central to the training DNR-permitted lake service provider businesses receive. Any-

one transporting a dock or lift from the adjacent shoreline property to another location for storage or repair may need a permit, to help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species.

The DNR recommends these steps for lake property owners: Look on the posts, wheels and underwater support bars of docks and lifts, as well as any parts of boats, pontoons and rafts that may have been submerged in water for an extended period.

Hire DNR-permitted lake service provider businesses to install or remove boats, docks, lifts and other water-related equipment. These businesses have attended training on Minnesota’s aquatic invasive species laws and many have experience identifying and removing invasive species.

Contact your area DNR aquatic invasive species specialist if you think you have discovered an invasive species that has not already been confirmed in your lake.

Morrison County Sheriff’s Office

October 12, 2017: The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office received two reports of vehicle thefts in the last week, both from residences.

• A 1997 red Dodge extended cab pickup truck, MN LIC/029NLM was stolen between 10:00-11:40AM on 10-10-17 from a residence in Culdrum Township, north of Swanville. The pickup truck has a small light bar on the front bumper and black rims with a CB radio inside. The pickup truck was left unlocked and the keys were inside at the vehicle at the time of the theft.

• A 1992 two-tone (blue on top, silver on bottom) Chevy single cab pickup truck, MN LIC/457JRR was stolen sometime overnight on 10-6-17 from a residence off of Ginger Road, south of Hwy 115 in Green Prairie Township. The pickup truck has a round amber emergency light on top of a silver topper. The silver paint on the truck is peeling; the wheel wells were freshly repaired and still have primer paint on them. The pickup truck was left unlocked and the keys were inside the vehicle at the time of the theft.

Sheriff Larsen continues to encourage residents to remove all valuables, including keys, and keep your vehicle locked.

Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office asks that you continue to report any suspicious activity. If you see a suspicious vehicle, attempt to get a license plate number so law enforcement can follow up with the registered owner. Contact the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office at (320) 632-9233 with any information regarding these thefts.
