Achieving your potential -By Harvey Mackay A famous art professor died and went to heaven. At the Pearly Gates, the professor asked St. Peter, “Sir, I spent most of my life on earth studying great art, but I have a question that has puzzled me for 30 years: Who was the greatest painter in history?”

St. Peter pointed to a nearby cloud.

“See that woman right over there? She’s the one.”

The professor frowned. “But I knew that woman on earth! She ran the cafeteria at the university where I taught! How could she have been the greatest painter in history?”

St. Peter shook his head sadly. “She could have been, if she ever picked up a brush and tried to paint.”

I suspect that woman had been good at her job, but did she reach her real potential? Did she follow her passion?

Was she content to let her dreams evaporate?

Those are tough questions to answer, especially when you consider that most of us find something we are reasonably good at where we can earn a living, and leave it at that. But is that the legacy you want to leave?

What do you want to be when you grow up? Good news: there is rarely just one answer. I am of the opinion that we all have tremendous potential if only we allow ourselves the freedom to try.

The problem starts when we box in our futures according to what we studied in school, or family expectations, or staying in a job that doesn’t challenge us to grow and flourish.

But you are ultimately responsible for your own success, in both your career and personal life. What do you really hope to accomplish in your life? And do you have a plan for getting there?

It starts with figuring out your purpose in life. As lofty as that sounds, I assure you, it’s not rocket science. I’ve shared my story often: At a young age, I imagined myself owning a factory and being an entrepreneur. I had to fill in a lot of blanks along the way, and learn some very difficult lessons, but in my heart I knew it was worth it.

Ask yourself some helpful questions.

What excites you? What do you want to learn? What do you love to do? That last question is especially important, because as I like to say, find something you love to do and you’ll never work a day in your life.

Then develop your personal mission statement. In 25 words or less, define what makes you uniquely qualified to achieve your dream. Say it out loud every day to build your confidence and commitment.

Think about what you have already accomplished and what steps you need to take both short-term and long-term.

Do you need to learn new skills, line up funding, work with a business partner?

Are you building a network of contacts that can help and advise you as necessary? You need to connect with people in many fields and professions.

Define what success will look like.

Will you recognize it when you achieve it? Are you prepared to change your definition as circumstances change?

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Look Out! There was a time, not so long ago, when we became aware of dangerous situations through a process of “trial and error.’ We were simply careless or we just didn’t think about the situation using common sense.

If we were kids we did some dangerous things either out of curiosity or as a dare from other kids.

As adults, many of us have scars to help make us remember some of our previous experiences, some of which could have been avoided. These marks also add proof and credibility when warning of a dangerous situation to the younger generation. The stories accompanying the showing of the scars may in some cases, be slightly exaggerated or made more exciting to create extra interest from the listener.

There wasn’t a lack of verbal warnings to us as kids. It was quite common to hear those often-used warnings, such as “yer gonna poke yer eye out, yer gonna break yer neck, yer gonna break yer leg and then what are you gonna do?” We heard them, but after they seemed to become part of common conversation, their meaning becomes less scary. To us they just

became something that grown-ups say (and maybe it was).

Today there is an effort by the government and private industry to create a safer environment for everyone. There is an abundance of signs warning us of intersections, speed limits, bumps, stop lights and signs. There are warnings of wet floors, frozen roads and walkways, dangerous dogs and internet scams.

Toys and machinery have permanently attached safety shields covering any area which could potentially cause injury. The law now requires the correct use of car seats for kids. Sometimes we think that maybe if common sense were used, the warnings would not be needed.

Probably easier to make signs than to instill common sense.

Cigarettes have a written warning on the package saying that smoking causes cancer. Alcohol consumption can cause harm to an unborn child. These are government warnings to consumers, but to be able to read the warning, you first buy the product. Now that you have the $8.00 pack of cigarettes or the $20.00 bottle of booze you use it, rather than taking it back to the retailer because they sold you a form of poison.

How many of you from a farm background remember a neighbor who was severely injured or killed by a bull?

How about injuries from a sow protecting a brood of newborns. The tractor tipping on someone with disastrous results. The one-armed neighbor that was caught in the corn picker. The fellow that didn’t

achieve your dream.

An Irish missionary shared this inspirational message in a London church: “Consider the walnut: If you compare a walnut with some of the beautiful and exciting things which grow on our planet, it does not seem to be a marvelous creation. It is common, rough, not particularly attractive, and certainly not valuable in any monetary sense. Besides, it is small. Its growth is limited by the hard shell which surrounds it. The shell from which it never escapes during its lifetime.

“Of course, that’s the wrong way to judge a walnut. Break one open and look inside. See how the walnut has grown to fill every nook and cranny available to it? It had no say in the size or the shape of the shell but, given those limitations, it achieved its full potential of growth.

take the time to put the shield over the power-shaft and didn’t come home or if he did make it home, he still had his shoes on, but he had covered his bruised and broken body with rags recovered from the power-shaft. Farming was and still is a dangerous business, even though many improvements have been made to reduce the risks.

As kids we definitely challenged our protecting angels. I am told stories about kids putting their hand in a corn sheller – not a good practice! Some serious injuries resulted. But after boring hours of pushing cobs into the sheller and turning the wheel, it was an idea that included some excitement and daring.

We jumped from roofs to prove we could do it. We played in the oats bin.

We walked behind horses. We jumped over the pasture fences. We took a drink

from the cattle watering tank and tasted the pig slop. In most cases there was no verbal warnings or written signs to warn us about such actions. As we grew older, our intelligence improved and we became curious about other things.

As adults injuries are primarily caused by a desire to get a job done faster. Not doing a safety item will save almost a minute of time. What a great bargain! Guess experience and warnings don’t entirely solve the problem of safety. Maybe we are actually just big kids!

Obituaries Lorraine A. Kresa

Lorraine A. Kresa, age 80 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully on We d n e s d a y, October 10, 2018 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, October 16 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Inurnment was in the parish cemetery.

Lorraine Ann Watkins was born February 6, 1938 in Deer Creek, Minnesota to Fay and Mildred (Wilson) Watkins. On August 28, 1953 she was united in marriage to Charles “Chuck” Vasecka at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Staples. To this union nine children were born. On March 9, 1982 she married Henry “Hank” Kresa in Las Vegas, Nevada. To this union, one daughter, Mindy was born.

Lorraine worked at the Staples Hospital until her retirement in 1984. After moving to Sauk Centre, she worked at First State Bank as a housekeeper and gave tours at the Boyhood Home of Sinclair Lewis in Sauk Centre. Lorraine was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, American Legion Post 67 Auxiliary, and Paul F. Donart VFW Post 2853 Auxiliary.

She was a caregiver to everyone and will be deeply missed.

Survivors include her children, Sherry (Mark) Larson of Grey Eagle, Connie (Randy) Bacon of Albertville, Donna (Scott) Castillo of Champlin, Deb (Russ) Jordan of Staples, Diane Northcott of Robbinsdale,

Dar Swanson of Chanhassen, Mindy Kresa of Coon Rapids, and step-son, Kelly (Alma) Kresa of Otsego; 20 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; sister, Carol Goodman of Duluth, her precious companion, Stella Mae, the Schnauzer; and honorary children of the late Jane Messer – Joe Messer, Ruth Merten, Jerry Messer, and Kevin Messer.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Chuck Vasecka on December 30, 2008; second husband, Hank Kresa on February 17, 2003; sons, William Vasecka on December 8, 1960 and Charles “Chuckie” Vasecka on May 13, 1970; daughter, Joan Saenger on August 28, 1999; son-in-law, Doug Okhungu on January 10, 2017; three sisters and two brothers.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, October 12, 2018, at All Saints (St. Mary’s) Catholic Church in Holdingford for Evelyn Ebnet, age 99, of Holdingford who died Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at the Little Falls Care Center.

The Rev. Joseph Herzing officiated.

Burial was in the parish cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home in Avon.

Evelyn was born March 28, 1919, in Stearns County to John & Barbara (Meller) Hadrich. She was raised on a farm and attended school in Arban. She worked at the Holdingford Post office for a short time.

She spent two years working in St. Paul and two years in Fort Louis, Washington. Evelyn married George Ebnet on July 22, 1941, and they made their home in Holdingford where she resided until moving into assisted living at the age of 98.

Ruth A. Heinen, age 76 of Sauk Centre, passed away after a heart related illness on Friday, October 12, 2018 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friday, October 19 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre. Inurnment will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday October 20 at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Sauk Centre with a lunch to follow at the American Legion.

Ruth Ann Heinen was born May 8, 1942 in Villard, Minnesota to Walter and Ethel (Thompson) Hoffman. She graduated from Villard High School. She was united in marriage to Joseph Heinen on April 24, 1965 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. She was a hairstylist for a few years

yard, whether it was cutting grass, gardening or just watching nature. She loved playing cards; 500 and cribbage were her favorites.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Holdingford where she was active in the Christian Mothers and the mission quilting group. She attended the Senior Citizens/ Helping Hands luncheons in Holdingford for over 35 years. Fishing with George was one of her favorite activities. She liked to watch George play baseball when he was playing in the Great Sioux League and later together they would watch Twins games and softball games at the Cyril Ebnet Field in Holdingford. Evelyn was an excellent cook and baker - apple pie, cookies and potato dumplings were her specialties. Evelyn enjoyed traveling. She was able to make trips to Washington, Alaska, Arizona, California, Wisconsin, Washington, D.C., and many places in Minnesota.

Survivors include her children, David (Joyce) of Holdingford; Dan of Cook; granddaughter, Dr. Lana (Darren Kloempken) Ebnet; grandsons, Jordan Ebnet and Jesse Kostreba; and five greatgrandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; four sisters, Frances Schmidt, Hilda Crever, Clara Rapp, Leona Gobernatz; and two brothers, Richard and George Hadrich. before starting her own business. She owned and operated Stylette Beauty Salon in Sauk Centre for many years. In her early years, she was an active member of the Sauk Centre Jaycees and enjoyed bowling and softball.

Ruth was a former officer and current active member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 67. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and was an avid reader of romance novels, and TV watcher of HSN, QVC, the Food Network Channel.

Ruth is survived by her sons, Jeff (Stacey) Heinen of Elko and Kevin Heinen of Sartell; son-in-law, Jason (Diane) Bartels of Corcoran; grandchildren, Michael, Ashley, Isabelle, Tanner, and Liam; sister and brothers, Helen Springer of San Diego, California, John (Margo) Hoffman of Villard, and Paul Hoffman of Glenwood; and sisterin-law, Sue Hoffman of Villard.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph Heinen; daughter, Kim Bartels; grandson, Andrew Bartels; brother, Bill Hoffman, and infant twin sisters.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services, Sauk Centre.

Evelyn L. Gartner (nee Sunderman), age 89, of Sauk Centre, died Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Sharon’s Senior Services Home in Alexandria, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 19 at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Jim Maderak officiating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Parish prayers will be at 6:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Evelyn Lorraine Gartner was born Evelyn Lorraine Sunderman on April 6, 1929 in Yankton, South Dakota to Leo and Clara (Pluth) Sunderman. Her family moved to rural Grey Eagle, Minnesota where she spent her childhood years. She graduated Valedictorian of her Grey Eagle High School class and began her working career as a bank teller in the Grey Eagle Bank. It was during this time, she met and fell in love with Norbert J. Gartner of Sauk Centre, Minnesota. They were married in 1949 and began their life together, moving to North Dakota where Norbert was employed by the Great Northern Railway. During this time, she worked at the Wahpeton State School of Science in the bakery department while starting a family.

After 12 years in North Dakota, the family moved to Grey Eagle, Minnesota where she assisted Norbert with the operation of the Standard Oil Bulk Fuels delivery service for several years. In 1964, they moved to Sauk Centre, Minnesota and added to their family. Evelyn tended to the

day to day household tasks and eventually began working as the Secretary in the Sauk Centre High School Principal’s office.

Evelyn was a devout Catholic and loved her faith. She was involved in her church in every location where she lived. A dedicated homemaker, she was an excellent cook and baker, enjoyed sewing, square dancing and tending a large garden with Norbert. She was especially proud of her flower garden and the many roses she cared for each summer. Evelyn served as the Treasurer for the Sauk Centre Senior Center and volunteered countless hours at Saint Michael’s Nursing Home. She and Norbert enjoyed spending their winter months in Alamo, Texas. She lovingly cared for Norbert daily at the Saint Michael’s Nursing Home for the last 11 years of his life, there as a result of suffering a stroke in 1997.

Evelyn is survived by her children, Tom (Marie) Gartner of Glenwood, Cheri (Patrick Barton) Gartner of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Mark (Julie) Gartner of St. Cloud, Julie (Todd) Hagemann of Aurora, Colorado, and Jim (Teresa VonRohr) Gartner of Sauk Centre; grandchildren, Jackie Gartner of Glenwood, Eric (Jen) Gartner of Alexandria, Dawn (Jason) Buell of Gilbert, Arizona, Jessica (David) Woolworth of Des Moines, Iowa, and Jason Hagemann of Scottsdale, Arizona; great-grandchildren, Quintyn, Dominic, and Gavin Gartner of Alexandria, Taylor and Rohan Frost and Jaxon and Dylan Buell all of Gilbert, Arizona, Harper and Asher Woolworth of Des Moines, Iowa, Dylan and Emily Hagemann of Scottsdale, Arizona; two brothers, Raymond (Irene) Sunderman of Sauk Centre and Richard (Barb) Sunderman of Woodbury; and one sister-in-law, Alice (Ronald) Sunderman of Long Prairie.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Norbert, and one brother, Ronald Sunderman.

James Dean Hederman

James Dean Hederman, age 47, formerly of Columbia Heights, MN passed away Sept. 23, 2018 at Regions Hospital, St. Paul, MN. James was preceded in death by cousin Lisa Marie Hennen and grandfather, Melvin O. Asmus of Grey Eagle.

He is survived by his parents, Dan & Judy (Asmus) Hederman, sister Kelly Herold (Chris), nieces, Breanna (Kevin)

Madison & Bethany, grandmother Elaine Asmus, aunt Karen & Rich Hennen & family. Special friend Brenda Dolittle & family. Many friends & relatives.

Jim worked at the US Post Office in Blaine, MN. He loved hunting, fishing and gardening. He planted 130 broccoli plants and froze broccoli. He pickled beets and made homemade sauerkraut. He planted a variety of peppers and dried them for his ‘Special Seasoning’ which was enjoyed by many as far away as Key Largo, Florida.

A memorial service was held on Oct. 1, 2018 at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Columbia Heights.

-Will Dear Will, Typically, homeowners insurance policies have a limit as to how much cash they will cover. I’d advise re-reading your policy, and double checking with your insurance agent just to be sure. When it comes to documenting valuables, I’d suggest making a video or taking photographs. Just to be extra cautious, you could store these in a safe deposit box at your local credit union or bank.

There are times when each of us feels that God is not paying attention to us when we pray. It seems as though the doors of heaven are locked tight and God is too busy to hear us. Or maybe we’ve moved away from Him and He no longer cares about us or our needs.

Even the writer of Psalm 102:1 felt that way when he wrote: “Hear my prayer, O Lord, let my cry for help come to You.” This was no ordinary prayer. He was desperate and begged God for His attention. He sensed a distance between himself and God, was in a crisis and could not endure this sense of alienation. And he continued by saying, “Do not hide from me - answer me quickly!”

Perhaps a lesson we can learn from this prayer is that God’s “time piece” is different from ours. It includes eternity.

We must always remember that He is at work in and with us shaping us into Christ’s likeness.

Dear Motor Medics, Do diesel vehicles need fuel system cleanings?

What are some good vehicles that I as a high school student could get under $5,000? I would prefer a vehicle with a manual transmission. Do you have any suggestions for me?

-Keegan in Ainsworth, Nebraska Dear Keegan, Diesel vehicles can benefit from fuel injection cleanings. We find when we clean diesel engines the fuel mileage improves. The dirtier the fuel injection system is, the better the improvement you can expect to see after a cleaning.

Keeping deposits off of the tips of injectors can also prevent early wear of the injectors and help extend the life of the pump.

As for a vehicle, you’ll have to make that decision on your own based on what is available in your market for the price. There are many vehicles available that are dependable and nice. I would stay away from vehicles that are high performance such as supercharged engines or tuner cars that have been modified so you can get something more reliable. The performance cars are cool but you can get a fast car that will need work and cost more in insurance, or a nice reliable car with more features and spend the same amount. Maybe even have some left over for the stereo. A very important pre-purchase item is to have a used car inspection performed by a knowledgeable mechanic before you buy the vehicle so that you don’t end up with unforeseen expense.

125,000 miles. Recently while driving it a light on the dash reads Reduced Engine Power with the check engine lamp on and the vehicle speed is limited to approximately 25 MPH. I had a diagnostic scan which returned a code of P1516 and they said everything they could find pointed to the throttle body actuator. Is it possible that the problem could be the throttle body being dirty and running cleaner through the gas tank will help? If the throttle body needs to be replaced, what should I expect the cost to be? P.S. this has happened about three times in the last 150 miles.

The system is a very sound one with several sensors to act as backups for the other so the system can tell if there is a failure and can shut it down or limit power for safety. The code you have tells me that the engine has seen a circuit failure in the throttle body. This means the throttle body sensors or the wiring to them may have failed. Cleaning will not help this one or have prevented the failure. You will need to have a shop use a lab scope to read the voltages to verify the problem. Check around for local pricing.

Grey Eagle City September 11, 2018 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joe Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 11th day of September 2018 in council chambers.

Council members present were Roland Ahrendt, Thom Muellner, Bill Pohlmann and Brian Hollenkamp.

There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were Chico Hellmann, Lori Hellmann and guests Kristie Kuhlmann and Bobby Pallansch.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the minutes of the August 15, 2018 meeting as written. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Kristie Kuhlmann was in attendance to update the council on the progress of the property at 304 State Street East. The gates are done but not hung and then will need to be covered with steel to match the rest of the fence. The nuisance clean up order will not be addressed by the council until the

fence is completed.

The following water/wastewater/maintenance items were discussed: 1. Ferguson Brothers will be coming to repair the wastewater outfall pipe.

2. Russ from Water Tower Clean and Coat will be coming to repair the bubbler for the water tower.

3. The chlorine pump is being repaired by Hawkins.

4. Electric Pump repaired the lift station pump and is now back in use.

5. Chico and Bob have been working on pressure washing and painting the fire hydrants around the city.

Chico has been using his pressure washer. A motion was made

by Thom Muellner to pay $100 for pressure washer rental. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Bobby Pallansch submitted a building permit application to the council to move in a 16’ x 10’ shed to the back of his property. A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the building permit application. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Cindy Olson, 54 of Browerville died at her home Friday, October 12, 2018. Services for Cindy will be on Friday, October 19, 2018; 11:00 a.m. at the Assembly of God Church in Long Prairie; burial will be at the Lakeview Cemetery, Grey Eagle.

Friends may come on Thursday, October 18 from 5-8 p.m. at the Iten Funeral Home in Browerville, and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Cindy was born August 9, 1964 in Minneapolis to Patrick and Barbara (Lene) Quirk. She attended school in Elk River through the 10th grade and graduated from

Chico will work on getting estimates for a cement pad on which to place the community sign as well as an estimate for power to the sign. Mr. Holig would allow snow to be piled up in the bank parking lot however he would like the pile to be kept small so that it does not take up too much in the way of parking spaces. A tree encroaching the sidewalk will be trimmed or removed before winter.

Cindy is survived by her husband, Mark of Browerville, children, Rhonda Tepley of St. Cloud, Eric (wife Heather) Tepley of Browerville, Angie (fiance Jordan Mithun) Tepley of Clarissa, Brandon Olson of Browerville; grandchildren, Madisen, Abigail, Garrett, Chloe, Mylee, Harper, Brantlee, Paislee and Skye; siblings, Patty (Loren) Bundy, Mary Quirk, Roland Quirk and Jeff Quirk.

She is preceded in death by her father Patrick Dean Quirk.

Clarice “Carrie” Catherine Poepping Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Carrie Poepping, age 74 of New Munich was held Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich.

Father Daniel Walz officiated, and burial took place in the parish cemetery following the service. Carrie Passed away peacefully at home on Monday, October 8, 2018.

The council discussed a request to split a parcel on Cedar Street South. The Council would be open to the possible split but would require the property lines to be in line with other properties.

The council discussed the stop sign by Update Building Supplies. It was the consensus of the council to keep the stop sign where it is.

The following building permits were approved by Mayor Joe Arnzen: Steve Bitz to put cement in front of his big shed, Russell Achman to put in a child fence and for St. Joseph’s Catholic Church to remove landscaping rock in front of parish house and install cement.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the building permit application for Linda Wershing to install a sidewalk from the house to the garage. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Ken Messer submitted a sketch for cement he would like to install. The matter was tabled until more information could be obtained.

The council discussed the dumping of trash in city containers by someone on Big Birch Lake. The garbage containers located throughout the city and city parks are there for city residents to use or for people who are using city park facilities. The Clerk was instructed to send a letter to the individual.

The council will not be having city property sprayed this fall.

The council would like to remind residents that when walking your dogs around the city, or at the city parks, dogs are to be leashed at all times. Residents are also reminded to clean up after your pet when they leave a mess behind.

The council would like to move forward with putting in a few campsites at the Lions Park and will work with members of the Lions Club to see what both parties could agree on.

Mayor Joe Arnzen had a resident request a Dead End road sign be placed on Pearl Street East. The council determined that this was not necessary.

The Clerk will be out of the office on October 8, October 18 and October 19th.

The Clerk was instructed to proceed with delinquent utilities as allowed by ordinance. Due to high unpaid utilities, and because there was no contact by three individuals a motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to assess four properties to the county to be placed on the property tax rolls for collection. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve the various fund transfers as follows: $750.67 from the Fire Fund to the Fire Hall Debt Service Fund and $106.45 from the General Fund of which $31.45 goes to the Water Fund and $75 goes to the Sewer Fund for Fire Hall and Library utilities. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve the payment of bills as listed and to include the payment of the following additional items: $1,540 to Todd County Auditor, $200 to Central Minnesota Credit Union, $100 to Larry Hellmann, and $10,225.79 to Central Minnesota Credit Union. A second was made

by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Leo (Dick) Richard Perlinger Leo (Dick) Dick worked for Allen’s Masonry and expand quickClinic concept in Sauk Richard Perlinger, Walmart; he was a gifted carpenter and age 76 of could fix almost anything. Dick and Arlene Centre and Sartell locations Swanville, died bought a hobby farm in 1976. He loved Coborn’s, Inc., and CentraCare Health have expanded their partnership to provide greater access to health care for people living across Central Minnesota through quickClinics which provide convenient and low-cost care options within grocery stores.

The newly opened quickClinics are located at 214 12th Street South in Sauk Centre and at 1725 Pine Cone Road South in Sartell. Both clinics are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily including most holidays.

These clinics are the third and fourth locations to open. The first quickClinic opened in Waite Park at Cash Wise in November 2017 followed by the Coborn’s store in Foley in January 2018.

“We’re continually looking for innovative ways to help our guests take charge of their personal well-being,” said Chris Coborn, Chairman, President & CEO of Coborn’s, Inc. “quickClinics provide our guests with a convenient, quality health care option right in the grocery store. Through our partnership with CentraCare Health, we are excited to bring this unique service to two more communities.

The quickClinic offers treatment for common health care concerns including illnesses, skin conditions, minor injuries and a wide range of vaccinations, wellness screenings and physicals. The new clinic in Sauk Centre has a health care provider onsite, like the existing clinics in Waite Park and Foley. The new quickClinic in Sartell is considered a “virtual” location, with an RN on-site to

help patients navigate a video visit with a provider located off-site. The virtual visits feature an innovative technology platform that allows the provider to see and hear patient symptoms through technology.

“We are using state-of-the-art technology to meet the needs of our patients.

We believe the technology used at quickClinic Sartell will eventually become a standard of care for rural health care organizations across the country,” said Brian Thieman, quickClinic Director at CentraCare Health. “Combining technology with medical expertise will allow us to meet the growing health care needs of our region.”

Dick was born on July 27th, 1942 to Leo George and Helen (Nelson) Perlinger in Little Sauk, Minnesota. He graduated from Grey Eagle High School and served in the United States Air Force from 1962 to 1966 in the 17th Air Force Division. Dick earned the Outstanding Achievement award for exemplary execution of duties in 1964 at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany. He married Arlene Gerads on May 25th, 1968 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala and they just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 22, 2018 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud for Melvin F. Herbes, age 82, of St. Cloud, who passed away on Friday, October 12, 2018 at St. Benedict’s Center Short Stay after a courageous battle with cancer. Inurnment will be in Assumption Cemetery, St. Cloud.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Daniel Funeral Home, St. Cloud and after 10:00 a.m. on Monday at the Church. Parish prayers will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Dick was an honest, hardworking man, with a quick wit. Dick and Arlene enjoyed outdoor adventures including vacations in Alaska, Glacier, Colorado, Yellow Stone, Canada, and the Grand Canyon along with camping, river canoeing, white water rafting and more. In retirement, he enjoyed wood carving and deer hunting….he was always happy doin’ whatever needed doin’ on the farm.

Dick is survived by his wife Arlene, sisters; Jan (Jerry) Schneider of St. Paul, Eileen Akre of Des Moines, Iowa; Uncle Robert Perlinger of Minneapolis and many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dogs— Bear & Rosie, and cats.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents Leo (1968) and Helen (1998); brother Herman (1967) and sister Helen (1998).

Interment was at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, MN.

Ellen Hoeschen on September 5, 1960 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa.

Together, they raised their four children in St. Cloud. Melvin worked at Fingerhut in St. Cloud until his retirement. He was a member of St. Peter’s Parish and the St. Cloud Eagles Aerie #622.

Melvin was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and family. He enjoyed playing cards, especially cribbage, watching NASCAR and fishing. He also enjoyed the MN10 CB Club and his daily walks at the Whitney Senior Center.

He is survived by his children, Bruce (Ann), of Minneapolis, Curt (Kim), of St. Cloud, Debra (Scott) Barthel, of Coon Rapids, and Carol (Mike) Almquist, of Blaine; grandchildren, Dominic Almquist, Lauren Barthel, Samantha Larson and Edmund Rakke; great-grandchildren, Caiden Larson-Watson and Jaxon Yost; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ellen on April 16, 2018; and brother, Lloyd Herbes.

Mark 9:38-50 – Very Important Stuff In previous verses to this reading the disciples are arguing about who is the greatest among them. Now they are trying to stop others from casting out demons in Jesus’ name. Why? Are they jealous, do they think they are greater than them? What we do know is that Jesus takes this as a chance to teach. When we begin to think too highly of ourselves Jesus has ways to humble us.

Jealousy, rivalry and envy are not very fitting for God’s people. Believers in Jesus are all on the same team. Sometimes we act like there is a competition going on, and the denomination with the most points at the end gets better living quarters in heaven for eternity or something like that. We get jealous of other christian denominations because they are doing this or that great thing and we are not. We don’t always want them to stop but we might feel like they are not playing by the rules because they allow theologically and spiritually questionable activities to dwell among them.

As the Church we must take verse 42 seriously. “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believes in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.” Ie – tie a rock around their neck and throw them in the river. With great power comes great responsibility. Within the LCMS teachers and pastors are very careful to interpret and apply God’s Word as accurately as they can using the Bible as their rule and norm. No church body is without its errors. Jesus’ advice is that when those parts lead the others to sin and fall away they are to be cut off and removed. A Church does not faithfully proclaim the Gospel when it is not also dealing seriously with sin.

Having the correct understanding and teachings regarding the Gospel is one thing and yes, we should be empowered to go and share it. Yet, at the same time

we must be watching out for serious sin.

The sin Jesus is recommending removing body parts for here is the type of sin that would cause people to completely fall away from Jesus and their salvation. Sin and false teaching that leads people on a path away from eternal life needs dealt with. This is very important stuff.

Making minor mistakes while sharing the gospel is not nearly as bad as not sharing it in the first place. The beauty of our Gospel reading this morning is how well Jesus balances the need to go out and share his name with others with the responsibility we have of purging the body of sin that leads to eternal death and separation from God. This is very important stuff. The gospel needs preached and at the same time sin needs to be dealt with.

If we can’t properly handle the law and the gospel we have a problem just like if salt loses its saltiness.

Jealousy, rivalry and envy are handled by the Law; Jesus, love and forgiveness are handled by the Gospel. This is very important stuff to keep in balance.

For those who can’t, and cause little ones to fall away, it would be better for them to stop pastoring all together to avoid the consequences Jesus prescribes. Amen.
