Show respect and you’ll have no regret -By Harvey Mackay T h o m a s J e f f e r s o n arrived alone on horseback at the main hotel in Baltimore and asked for a room.

The landlord of the hotel, named Boyden, looked Jefferson up and down and surmised that he was a lowly farmer and in a curt voice said, “We have no room for you, sir.”

Just after Jefferson had left, a very wealthy man came to the hotel and informed Boyden that the man was Thomas Jefferson, vice president of the United States at the time. Boyden was amazed and appalled that he had turned away the vice president.

“He is the greatest man alive,” declared the wealthy gentleman. “What have I done?” lamented Boyden. He called for his helpers and he said, “Run and tell that gentleman that he may have forty rooms if he wishes. Tell him

to come back. He can have my wife’s bedroom or my own.”

Jefferson by that time had already reached the Globe Hotel when Boyden’s servants caught up with him and delivered their master’s message.

Jefferson replied: “Tell him I have engaged a room. Tell Boyden that I value his good intentions highly, but if he has no room for a dirty farmer, he shall have none for the vice president.”

As baseball great Jackie Robinson said, “I’m not concerned with your liking or disliking me ... All I ask is that you respect me as a human being.”

There are four very important words in life – love, honesty, truth and respect.

Without these in your life you have nothing.

If there was ever a time in our history when respect was less evident, I would suggest that time is now and it would be a good time to examine our relationships. Politics, social media, even our schools are constantly cited as examples of disrespectful behavior.

But all is not lost. I think most of us would prefer to return to kinder times when having differing opinions was met

with open minds. It’s important to listen to other points of view. You may learn something that you hadn’t considered before. And it could help you understand why others behave as they do.

Reggie Jackson, Hall-of-Fame baseball player, said: “I believe it is very important to show respect toward individuals who live up to their obligations and responsibilities, whether or not you like the individuals involved.

Respect is a virtue which goes far beyond the emotion of liking.”

You probably spend most of your waking hours at work, so respectful behavior is essential to building trust among co-workers. Working together can easily turn co-workers into best friends, making jobs more enjoyable and the workplace a productive environment.

But friendships need to be managed appropriately just like every other workplace relationship. Respect in the workplace means that you follow some basic rules.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Worries The leaves are turning, just as they have done as long as there has been trees and changing of the seasons.

For those on the farm it is the time to collect the payment for their work during the previous months.

It is like putting some money in the bank. In some cases, it is a time to sell some of the harvest to get another year’s relief from the lending institution. Other situations allowed the actual harvested crop to pay off the bill at the produce.

Maybe there would be enough profit to settle the bill at the implement store.

Hopefully, a time to help relieve the financial concerns of the farm family.

Many farmers worried about the weather during the whole year. They were concerned about rain, hail, wind, drought and snow in the winter. Maybe,

if you are a farmer, there are many long solitary hours, which allows the farmer time to worry about something of which he has absolutely no control. This worry has been a part of farming since the time people discovered that they could plant one seed, which if it grew successfully, would return a handful of seeds. The successful harvest, like today, depended entirely on the weather, which has been said previously can’t be controlled.

The farmers from the middle 1800’s also had a few other crop destruction concerns. Will the bears and coons tear down the corn and oats. Will the deer bite off the end of the corn cobs and make them worthless. Will the gophers, mice, rabbits and squirrels eat the seeds.

Will the badgers and groundhogs fill the field with holes due to it being easier to dig plowed ground. Geese and sand hill cranes really liked the first growth from the corn seed, causing the farmer to reduce their numbers, which have only begun to recover in recent years. They usually are not able to destroy the whole crop, but when there were only a small number of fields and plants planted,

friendly conversations overshadow your responsibilities. Stay focused on your job most of the time.

• Keep private issues private. When you have problems to discuss, do it over lunch or after work. You don’t want to make your co-workers privy to your personal dramas – and they probably don’t want to listen to them either.

• Avoid gossip. Most of us love to talk about other people, but keep your natural inclination to share rumors about co-workers or managers in check.

If colleagues realize you’re gossiping about them, the backlash could be unpleasant.

• Don’t do each other’s jobs.

Pitching in to help a friend in a crunch is admirable, but keep it to a reasonable limit. Your manager is in charge of assignments and responsibilities, not you. You don’t want to give the impression that you don’t trust them to do their job.

• Include, don’t exclude. You may prefer the company of your friend, but don’t ignore the rest of your office.

Invite other co-workers to lunch, and include them in your conversations.

You may even make new friends by expanding your circle at work.

Of course, I usually rely on the “act like your mother is watching” formula.

If you would be ashamed to behave in a certain way around your mother, stop and think before your actions would earn her disapproval. I’d like to believe the lessons we learned in childhood would carry through to our adult lives.

I’d hate to think we all have to learn the hard way, like Mr. Boyden.

Farm livestock were also subject to injury and death when farming began in this area. Wolves, bears and coyotes were a hazard to all farm livestock.

The smaller animals fell prey to mink, weasels, skunks and coon. They would occasionally find a way into the pens at night. Owls, hawks and eagles also found chickens and ducks to be very tasty. All of these flying hazards on the farm, were “chicken hawks” and were shot when they appeared. As time passed, their numbers also reduced and are now beginning to increase.

Wolves were virtually eliminated to protect the farm livestock, however in recent years, they have been reintroduced. Their numbers are increasing along with predatory attacks on young stock. Hmmm Farmers today do not have as many losses from predators. They have found

ways to eliminate losses from noxious weeds. They have begun to irrigate to avoid losses from lack of rain. However, to produce sufficient revenue to support the new farming methods, the farm needs to produce more crops, which requires more land, animals, machinery, storage and technology, etc.

Is farming today less worrisome than it was in the past? I think the answer is “yes”. Today the value of the products produced seems to be the thing that creates the most concern. Now it is the prices on the world markets that effect local farmers.

Obituary Donna Lange

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Donna Lange, age 81 of St. Anna will be at 10:30 AM, Friday, October 18 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Anna.

Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Donna passed away peacefully Sunday, October 13th surrounded by her family at the Mother of Mercy Campus of Care in Albany. There will be a visitation from 4-8 PM Thursday and again after 9:30 AM, Friday at the church in St. Anna.

Immaculate Conception parish prayers will be at 5 PM and the Immaculate Conception Christian Women will pray the rosary at 6 PM Thursday. Arrangements are being made by the Miller-Carlin Funeral Homes.

Donna was born June 14th, 1938, in Albany, to Michael and Adeline (Bueckers) Atkinson. She grew up in St. Anna and graduated from Holdingford High School in 1954. She married the love of her life, Alfred Lange, on April 18th 1959, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church

in St. Anna. The couple lived and raised their family in the St. Michael-Albertville area, where she worked in the clerical field, before moving back to St. Anna. She worked at the Holdingford School District where she was one of the 16 “Happy Huskers Powerball Winners.” Donna and Al built their dream home in Clear Lake where they lived for many years, before she moved back to her home on Two Rivers Lake. The highlight of her life was being with family, especially her two grandsons. She enjoyed trips to the casino, knitting, bowling, and playing cards. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Immaculate Conception Christian Mothers.

Donna is survived by her two children, Alfred (Shawn) Lange, Zimmerman, and Clarice (Corey) Everson, St. Michael. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Trent Lange and Henry Everson, two sisters, RoseMary Jarnot, St. Anna, and Carol Lange, Golden Valley, and sister-inlaw Bernice Welters, New Hope.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Alfred, and her daughter, Therese Lange; her brothers and sisters, John, Rose Marie, Margaret, Grace, and William.

Memorials to the family are preferred.

Dear Dave, What’s the best way to talk to a parent, and tell them their career or financial choices aren’t working out? My mom and dad divorced a few years ago, and now my mom is having money problems.

She bought some rental properties after the divorce with the idea becoming a landlord and generating income that way.

Since then, she has lost the properties to foreclosure and isn’t making a lot of money in her new job. I’m worried about her, but I just graduated from college, and I’m afraid she won’t listen to me.

-Renee Dear Renee, You’ve got a great heart, and I’m glad you love your mom enough to want to help her. Divorce is never an easy thing for anyone involved.

I’m guessing you’ve heard sayings at some point in your life about how winners never quit, and quitters never win. Those statements aren’t always completely true. Successful people quit doing things that aren’t working all the time. This doesn’t have to mean you give up on a dream. It might mean

you change the processes and methods you’re using—especially if what you’ve done in the past hasn’t worked out well.

Part of being successful in life, and in business, is having the ability to recognize when something isn’t working and make changes. You sound like an intelligent, caring young woman.

But honestly, there’s probably not much chance someone fresh-out-of-college will have a lot of influence with her mother when it comes to things like this.

It might be a good idea if she talked to one of her friends or relatives a little closer to her own age. I mean someone with a little more life experience. If she’s in a good church, she could even talk to her pastor. In the meantime, maybe you could talk to someone like this and explain what your mom is going through. Ask them to approach her, and see if she’ll listen and be willing to accept some new ideas.

You’re a good daughter, Renee.

Show your mom all the love and support you can. It sounds like she needs it right now.

Grow with Google coming to St. Cloud Google is coming to St. Paul and St. Cloud, Minnesota as part of the tech company’s ‘Grow with Google’ initiative. ‘Grow with Google’ aims to help create economic opportunity in communities across the United States by helping people grow their skills, careers, and businesses. To further this mission, they’ll be hosting day long digital skills workshops at libraries in both Minnesota cities and providing free training, tools, and expertise for Minnesotans.

“In addition to its long history as an agricultural powerhouse, Minnesota has consistently attracted successful companies, health care pioneers, and entrepreneurs - especially in the computer industry - which have contributed to its strong economy,” said Dan Harbeke, Google’s Regional Head of External Affairs. “‘Grow with Google’ workshops will aim to build upon this foundation by providing small business owners and job seekers in the state with more resources to grow economic opportunities in Minnesota.”

The tour in St. Cloud will be held at: • Great River Regional Library, 1300 W St. Germain St., St. Cloud, MN 56301 on Friday, October 18 from 10:30 AM-5:30 PM. Throughout the day Google staff will teach a variety of hands-on workshops aimed to provide local businesses and residents with tools and resources to grow their businesses, find the jobs they want, and advance their careers. Attendees are welcome to pre-register for specific workshops, or drop in and sign up for one-on-one 20 minute training sessions with Google staff for everything from how to set up an email account, to ways they can advertise their business, or create a resume.

Local nonprofits - libraries, government agencies, educational institutions and more - will also be invited to join the ‘Grow with Google’ partner program; a free network for local organizations which provides a range of training content, tools and promotional materials and best practices to continue sharing ‘Grow with Google’ resources with their community.

Public libraries have been natural and valuable partners in bringing ‘Grow with Google’ resources to communities across the United States. According to the American Library Association, nearly three-quarters of libraries already have job development programming in place and 90% are helping patrons learn basic digital skills. by Burning Glass and Capital One found that more than 8 in 10 middle-skill jobs (82%) require digital skills. Overall, middle-skill jobs average $20 per hour.

In their 2018 Economic Impact Report, Google announced that 20,000 Minnesota businesses, website publishers, and nonprofits benefitted from Google tools and that it helped provide $6.41 billion of economic activity for Minnesota organizations. Birth Announcement Leon Allen Douvier

Evan and Trista Douvier of Albany are proud to announce the birth of their son, Leon Allen Douvier, born Wednesday, October 9, 2019 at 12:28 a.m. at the CentraCare-Melrose Hospital.

Leon weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces and measured 21 inches long.

He has two big sisters: Emeri 4 years old, and Avlie 3 years old, both at home.

Grandparents are Carla Douvier of Albany, Dean Mielke of Avon, and Julie Klaphake of Avon. Great-grandparents are Renee and Allen Douvier of St. Francis, Lois Mielke of Swanville, Sharon and Bill Fruechte of Albany, and Jim Gerads of St. Francis.

On October 4th, the Grey Eagle/Swanville Knighs of Columbus Council #14616, conducted a Highway Clean-up Project. A two mile stretch of County Road 47, from the Todd/Stearns County line to County Road 17, was cleaned up. This is an on-going project conducted in the Spring and Fall each year.

Helping with the clean-up were: Fred Frie, Will Brown, John Loxterkamp, Don Kerfeld, Ron Hieserich, Leroy Blommel, Jim Sinclair, Gordy Reecy, Paul Merline, Stan Mensen, Izzy Schmiesing and Ken Sinclair. Submitted by Ken Sinclair.

Harvest Time: Be Patient and Considerate By the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Fall season is upon us, or is it a combination of monsoon and winter?

Either way, farmers need to harvest their crops. Rural drivers can expect to share the road with large farm implements. It’s important for both drivers and farm equipment operators to remain alert at all times and to be patient and considerate of one another.

Farm equipment typically travels at slower speeds, usually 25 mph or less, and can turn unexpectedly from roads into fields. Your best bet is to give the equipment plenty of room and to slow down to avoid rear end collisions. Just because you see the farm equipment

doesn’t necessarily mean they can see you. If you need to pass a piece of farm equipment, look for lights or hand signals. Large farm equipment may swing to the right before making a left-hand turn or vice versa.

When you attempt to pass, make sure you have plenty of room to do so and can do so safely. Remember to look for mailboxes and road signs as they can suddenly appear when you need to go wide around larger equipment.

Farmers, you can help out by making sure your lights are working, and you have slow moving signs on your equipment. Farm equipment has to be adequately lit for operation after dark.

As many football coaches say, keep your head on a swivel. You never know when you are going to encounter one of us city slickers driving in the country.

We all know this has been an extraordinarily wet year, meaning there may be extra mud on the road from farm equipment coming and going. Yes, the farmer is responsible for cleaning up the road if they leave something behind. They will do so as quickly as they can, but we all need to be a bit patient and understand this is and will be occurring.

Dear Motor Medics, On occasion my 2006 Chevy C o l o r a d o vehicle won’t turn over. When I turn the key, there is no sound and all the lights on the dash stay bright. I have found one thing that is different when this happens and that is a symbol of a padlock on the dash that flashes when the key is on. When the vehicle cranks normally the light comes on then goes off right away. I have had it in for service several times with no luck as they can’t duplicate the problem.

They have told me that the symbol is for the anti-theft pass lock system and that it can’t be the problem because it shuts off fuel to prevent theft and does not control the starter. They think it may be the starter and want to replace it but at a cost of over $500.00 I want a second opinion and value yours.

We don’t want to criticize others repair knowledge since we make our own mistakes but… If they were to look under GMs description and operation of the pass lock system in the manual they would see clearly that the theft system does control the starter. We see this issue often and almost always it is a problem with the lock cylinder sensor. This would be a good area to investigate before changing a starter.

-Morgan in Duluth, Minnesota Dear Morgan, What you need depends on how well you have taken care of your vehicle. If you have been following the recommended maintenance schedule you will be closer to ready. Consult with a local mechanic for a complete list but here are a few things that can catch you off guard. A battery that has been worn down by summer heat may fail when very cold. A capacitance test will reveal its true condition. Poor heating or engine freeze-up caused by lack of regular cooling system care. Flush the system and the heater core on a scheduled basis to keep it in good shape. Don’t forget to inspect belts and hoses; the cold is very hard on them. Tires will drop pressure when cold as well so adjust as needed. Follow the manufacturers recommended oil viscosity ratings when changing your oil. Don’t use thinner oil unless it is allowed by the manufacturer or you could cause engine damage. For easier starting, fully synthetic oil can help on very cold days. There are other items as well so get to your mechanic before it gets too cold and don’t forget a good winter survival kit.

Upsala City October 7, 2019 Call to Order/Attendance: The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 P.M. The pledge of allegiance was said.

On roll call members present were: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Dennis Westrich, Lana Bartells, and Crystal Benson.

Absent: Brian Lange People present: GRRL Library Services Coordinator Wanda Erickson, Darleen Maciej, Public Works Director Mike Tschida, Morrison County Record Reporter Sheila McCoy, and City Clerk/Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Minutes: Bartells moved to approve minutes from September 3, 2019 City Council meeting, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Added agenda items: Bartells moved to approve the agenda as presented, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Department Reports: Economic Development: Stevens explained that Robert Harris was hired by CEDA to replace Tara. His first day will be tomorrow at City Hall.

Fire Department Report: Fire Department minutes were presented.

First Responders: The First Response Team minutes were presented.

Benson moved to approve the resignation from Steve Hansen from the Upsala First Response Team with regrets, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Maintenance Report: Tschida reported on water and sewer levels. He also reported they started discharging the sewer ponds. He discussed the need to treat the primary pond with aluminum sulfate to keep our numbers within our state permitted levels.

The tree stumps will be ground out this fall.

Jetting the sewer lines is almost done; hopefully will be done by this Wednesday.

Hydrant Flushing will be done Monday, October 14 after 4:00 p.m.

Lights for the winter decorations on the street lights are in disrepair. The Council directed Stevens to look into replacing the lights for the next couple years.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the October Calendar.

Planning Commission: Westrich updated the Council on what the Planning & Zoning Commissioners have been working including their Open House scheduled for November 20 at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall.

UCDC: Benson explained the team met to tally the results from Heritage Days.

Unfinished Business: League of Minnesota Cities Regional Meeting Johnson reminded Council Members of the LMC Regional Meeting October 16. He also stated that Stevens and he rescheduled their meeting date to October 9 in Benson due to scheduling conflicts.

New Business: St. Mary’s Gambling Permit: Benson moved to approve a gambling permit with no waiting period set for October 27, 2019 at St. Mary’s Church located at 308 South Main, 2nd

by Bartells. Motion carried

unanimously.

MN Rural Water Association- Financing Community Projects MRWA is offering a training October 10 addressing the demands of repairing and replacing the City’s infrastructure.

Short-Term & Long-Term Planning for the City Johnson also talked about the need to discuss short and long-term range planning for the City. He directed Stevens to put it on the November agenda.

Levy: Bartells moved to pass resolution 10-7-19-1 a resolution to raise the City’s levy the cost of living 2.8%, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

LMC Collaboration Program: Johnson explained the LMC Resource of the Collaboration Training. Pamela Witmore with the League will be here December 11 at 6:30 pm to work on dealing with Conflict Management and Team Building. He has required that all Fire and First Response Team Members attend this training. He also requested that the Council Members also plan to be at the training.

Sytek Contract for Library Space: Johnson shared with the Council the need for a new contract with Sytek for rent of library space. Benson moved to approve the new five year contract with Sytek 2nd by Bartells.Motion carried unanimously.

Overdue Utilities: Stevens presented the current list of accounts with overdue utilities.

The final list will be assessed onto property taxes in mid-November.

Michelle Stevens, Clerk/ Treasurer Burtrum City October 7, 2019 The meeting of the Burtrum City Council was called to order at 7:00 pm on Monday, October 7th, 2019 by Mayor Ron Strassburg. Those in attendance included: Ronald Strassburg, Carrie Wiechmann, Deb VanHavermaet, Mitchell Bruggenthies, Sharon Erickson, Kevin Rohde, and Dustin Wiechmann.

The meeting minutes from September 9th, 2019 were read and approved by a motion made by Mitchell Bruggenthies, seconded by Kevin Rohde, upon vote motion was carried and the minutes were accepted.

Next the finance report was read and approved by a motion made by Deb VanHavermaet and seconded by Kevin Rohde. The City Council then discussed outstanding/ routine bills and upon a motion made by Sharon Erickson and

seconded by Mitchell Bruggenthies, the bills were paid.

Regarding old business, there are dirt piles left over from the culverts being put in that will need to be cleaned up.

Next, in new business, it was discussed on getting some rubber mats to put in the city shed to help protect the cement.

The water lines will be winterized at the Burtrum Lion’s park sometime this month, and the port-a-pot will be removed.

As there was no further topics to discuss the meeting was adjourned with a motion first made by Mitchell Bruggenthies on and seconded by Kevin Rohde, upon votes motion carried and the meeting was adjourned.

The next City Council Meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 4th, 2019 at 7:00 pm at the Burtrum Town Hall.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for September. Claims list included claims 3364 - 3375 for a total of $149,610.87. This included the 2nd half of the 2019 fire contract and the paving and reclaiming of Angler Drive and the paving of Arden Drive. Ray made the motion to approve the claims; Mike made the second, Motion carried. Mike made a motion to move monies from CD-2 to the R&B account, Ray made second. All in favor, motion carried.

Mail included a letter from P&Z regarding the meeting for ordinance amendments, Ron & Mike attended the meeting. Pollution control letter regarding ordinance updates, some advertising and the U of M technology exchange flyer.

Also, information on a septic class being held in Melrose.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported on brush cutting by sentence to serve may start on Oct. 11. Culvert issues on 295th. He had a request for a 30 mph speed sign and a dead end sign on Arden – no action was taken. Ray cut a large tree on 321st, fixed the holes in Breezy Drive and 130th. Ray also shared a plat book from 1925 that showed the cartway coming off of 335th. Erv had done some work to try to drain the standing water which has helped.

Adjournment: Motion by Ray to adjourn the meeting.

Schools receiving $30 million in safety funding

State Rep. Paul Anderson, R-Starbuck, announces school districts throughout Minnesota are set to receive a combined $30 million from the state to fund safety initiatives.

The supplemental aid must be used for expenditures as authorized under the Safe Schools Levy. This includes a wide variety of facility and programming purposes such as police liaison services, counseling, school security, gang resistance education training and other crime prevention and safety measures for students and staff.

“School safety is not a partisan issue; we all want our kids to be safe,” Anderson said. “This allocation of funding will help our local schools and citi-

Sauk Centre House Fire: October 15, 2019: Wood burning stove is believed to be the source of an early morning house fire.

Homeowner Bridjett Breitbach, 28, of Sauk Centre, awoke to her smoke alarms going off and found a portion of her house on fire. A wood burning stove is believed to be the cause of the fire.

Sauk Centre Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire.

Breitbach, along with her dog and cat, safely evacuated the house. No injuries were reported.

Sauk Centre Police Department and Sauk Centre Ambulance assisted.

All that Halloween stuff can make your bank account balance look downright scary! So, let’s talk about three simple tips for saving money on Halloween.

Don’t buy name-brand candy There was a time in my life when I was overly concerned with being the “cool” house on the block. You know, the one with the really legit, exciting candy at Halloween—maybe even some full-size candy bars.

But when I saw the price tag at the store, that need to impress the neighbors left quick. I thought, Nope! Sorry, cute neighbor kids. You’re getting the generic brand. I can buy a huge bag of it for half the price!

If you’re on a tight budget, don’t feel pressured to splurge and get the expensive candy. The kids will get plenty, and they’ll all be on sugar highs anyway, so they’ll never know the difference.

Scale back on Halloween parties Halloween parties are pretty elaborate these days with huge spreads of food, amazing costumes, and even signature cocktails. If you’re hosting or attending one, just be wise with what you spend. After all, Halloween is just one day!

If you’re hosting, ask your guests to bring a dish to share. Set a budget for yourself on party supplies and decorations, and stick to it!

If you’re attending someone else’s

party, don’t feel pressured to bring the fanciest bottle of wine or go overboard with buying the most impressive costume. You don’t want to go into November stressed out about overspending on this one day.

You can decide not to celebrate Halloween Okay, I honestly don’t love Halloween. Not for any spiritual or moral reason, it’s simply because I’m not creative. And I’m terrible at coming up with costumes! Thankfully, my girls usually want to be princesses. That’s something Amazon can fix. But I dread the day when they want something more imaginative. I’m not the mom who just whips up a costume out of odds and ends in my craft closet.

But guess what? No one says we must celebrate Halloween. There’s no shame or guilt in a graceful no if Halloween doesn’t fit your budget this year.

If you sit this holiday out, you’ll save so much money on candy, costumes, and ugly plastic partywear. Plus, you’ll save time and energy! You can always jump back in next year, when you have room in your budget.

Stay safe when the water temperature drops As the leaves fall and the air temperature drops, memories of years past serve as a constant reminder that winter may be only a day away. It’s a time when hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans – many of them anglers and hunters – will spend the next month or two out in the elements, chasing fish, scanning the sky for ducks, or waiting for the deer that will fill their freezers with venison.

For anyone whose fall plans include time on the water, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources offers this reminder: Your safety is your responsibility.

This time of the year can be especially dangerous for anyone who recreates on the water because falls into cold lakes, ponds or rivers incapacitate even strong swimmers.

And while some people like the solitude that comes with being on the water in the fall, it’s a double-edged sword because cries for help may go unheard or rescues may take longer than they would have during the warm-weather months.

While more boating-related accidents occur during the busy summer months, a higher percentage of them are fatal during the cold-water season and survival rates drop drastically.

“Few things are as heartbreaking as telling someone their loved one isn’t coming home, especially when the reality is so many incidents could be avoided by taking a few simple safety precautions,” said Jon Paurus, DNR Enforcement Division education program coordinator.

Wearing a life jacket (foam is better than inflatable during the cold-water season) is the one action most likely to help people survive a fall into cold water. People can reduce the likelihood of a fall overboard by distributing weight evenly in the boat and abiding by the manufacturer’s weight

limits. Having a means of communication is important, too, as is making sure other people are aware where you’re going and when you plan to return.

Changes in weather that result in shifting winds and storms can also lead to a treacherous situation, so it’s vital for anglers and hunters to keep an eye to the sky. And whether they’re on water or land, hunters should always follow the four rules of firearms safety: Treat each firearm as if it is loaded; always control the muzzle of your firearm; be sure of your target and what is beyond; and keep your finger off the trigger and outside the trigger guard until you’re ready to shoot.

“Minnesota is a wonderful place to live and recreate, but our opportunity for getting out on the water to fish and hunt is relatively compressed,” Paurus said. “It’s understandable people don’t want to let cold water or cold weather get in their way of enjoying the outdoors, but it’s imperative they’re safe and smart about it.”
