If you want to excel at anything in life you need to be committed. If you only want to be good enough to get by, then a commitment to excellence is not necessary. If you are committed to a cause, you don’t need to tell anyone. They can tell from your actions.

I often wonder how people can be happy or at peace with themselves if they don’t make a commitment to something, whether it be succeeding at work or improving at a skill. How do you reconcile expecting desired results without giving an honest effort to be the

I know that if you go into any endeavor and say you will give it a try to see if it works, your half-hearted effort will probably fail.

Wanting something and actually making a commitment to getting it are two different things. Your goals may be big and worthy, but do you have the passion to see them through? Success starts with a road map and a strategy, that’s just the beginning. You must be prepared to seeing the action plan through – making a commitment to get to the finish line.

To determine whether you are honestly prepared to make a commitment, Rosabeth Moss Kanter of the Harvard Business School suggests testing yourself with these questions:

• Do you feel strongly about the importance of your goal – why it’s necessary to achieve?

• Does your idea match your values and beliefs?

• Is this something you’ve dreamed about for a long time?

• Is your goal vital to the future of people you care about?

• Does your goal get you excited when you think about it and share it with others?

• Is it realistic? Are you sincerely convinced that your goal can be achieved?

• Are you willing to put your credibility on the line for it?

• Can you make your goal the primary focus of your activities?

At 6:50 p.m. as evening fell in Mexico City in 1968, John Stephen Akwari of Tanzania painfully hobbled into the Olympic stadium – the last man to finish the punishing marathon race.

The victory ceremony for the winning runner was long over and the stadium was almost empty as Akwari – his leg bloody and bandaged – struggled to circle the track to cross the finish line.

Watching from a distance was Bud Greenspan, a documentary filmmaker famous for his Olympic movies.

Intrigued, Greenspan walked over to the exhausted Akwari and asked why he had continued the grueling run to the finish line.

The young man from Tanzania did not have to search for an answer. He said: “My country did not send me 9,000 miles to start the race. They sent me 9,000 miles to finish the race.”

Obituaries Lucille Ehrenberg

L u c i l l e C h r o m e y Ehrenberg, 90 year old resident of Little Falls, MN formerly of Grey Eagle, MN passed away Thursday, September 25, 2014 at Little Falls Care Center in Little Falls, MN. Funeral services were held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle, MN with Pastor Ron Tibetts officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Lakeview Cemetery in Grey Eagle, MN. Lucille was born on July 15, 1924 in Douglas County, Minnesota to the late William and Hulda (Polley) Garvin. She grew up in Douglas County and attended Country School at District #7. Lucille was united in marriage on November 10, 1940 to Norbert Chromey in Osakis, MN. The couple lived and farmed in the Villard area until 1950 when they built their farm in Grey Eagle, MN. Lucille moved off her farm in 1989 and she lived in Long Prairie for a short time and later moved to Little Falls, MN. On March 30, 1998 she was united in marriage to Art Ehrenberg. Lucille was a talented quilter, an excellent gardener, and a wonderful cook.

She was also very knowledgeable on a wide

variety of subjects. Lucille was a life time member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle, MN. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Lucille is survived by sons, Richard Chromey of Browerville, MN, Gerald (Diana) Chromey of Hewitt, MN, Dean (Helen) Chromey of Browerville, MN, John (Jeanne) Chromey of Fall Creek, WI, and Mark (Kris) Chromey of Alexandria, MN; daughters, Diann (Alto) Finken of Cold Spring, MN, Sharon Chromey of Brooklyn Park, MN, Beverly (Robert) Messinger of Little Falls, MN, and Kay Chromey of Colorado Springs, CO; and 38 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.

Lucille was preceded in death by husband, Norbert Chromey (1989) and Art Ehrenberg (2000); daughters, Janet Mallak, Holly Chromey, and Colleen Henrich; grandchildren, Katie Zapzalka and Jerrod Zapzalka; and 11 brothers and sisters.

Casketbearers were Ben Messinger, Kenton Chromey, Roby Henrich, Cory Finken, Travis Listful, Isadore Mallak Jr., Nicholas Chromey, and Patrick Chromey.

She was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Christian Women, and Senior Dining. Marie found great therapy in baking, cooking, and quilting. She was kind, compassionate, and independent; and family meant the absolute world to Marie.

teacher and coach, working in Ivanhoe, Browns Valley and Foley, before enlisting in the Merchant Marines in 1944 where he served in the Philippines. Returning to Holdingford in 1945, Norbert resumed teaching and coaching, soon taking on principal duties as well. He married Mary Botz on July 6, 1946. Together, they raised seven children. In 1953, he became a Mobil Oil agent, retiring in 1984. He was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and served on the Holdingford School Board.

He continued to live in Holdingford and wintered in Sun City West, Arizona, until 2013 when he moved into a Country Manor apartment in Sartell. Throughout his life, he loved to play baseball, golf, poker and cribbage. He loved to read. He loved Mary and his family most of all.

Norbert is survived by his children, Susan Vos of Minneapolis; Pat (John) Krueger of Richmond; Peg Vos of Talkeetna; AK, Leo (Margaret) Vos of Foreston; Dan Vos (Barbara Mahoney) of Anchorage, AK; Terri (David) Ellison of Cloquet; and Kathy Vos (Greg Abbott) of North Mankato; grandchildren, Molly, Sarah, Kate, Mark, Jacob, Johanna, Matthew, Ben and Brogan; great grandchildren, Grace, Maya and one on deck; sisters, Delores Burger, Leola Anderson and Rosemary Heisick and brother, Ralph Vos. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, and his parents.

Norbert was born May 29, 1920, in Holdingford to Thomas Vos and Rose (Schiller) Vos. Growing up in Holdingford, Norbert established himself as a competitive athlete, starting on the town baseball team as a freshman in high school. His love of sports followed him to St. John’s University where he was a four-sport letterman, participating in baseball, basketball, football and track.

He was proud of playing every inning of every St. John’s baseball game for four years. He graduated from St. John’s in 1941 with a major in history and a minor in mathematics. He began his career as a

Dear Dave, I’m in college, but I’m not the typical college student.

I’ve gone back to law school after working for several years.

My wife and I have followed your plan, and we’re completely debt-free.

I’m cash flowing school, and we’ve been fortunate enough to build up about $2 million in investments. The other day I saw what I consider to be a collectible car I’d love to have — a 1988 Pontiac Fiero that’s in excellent condition for $10,000.

Should we wait until I finish school, or is it okay to buy it now?

-Rick Dear Rick, Wow, I’m impressed. You guys are in great shape. You’re totally debt-free, cash flowing law school and you have $2 million sitting there. My advice? As long as you’ve got the cash on hand, and it won’t hinder your college plans, your lifestyle or come out of your investments, buy the car!

You’ve worked your butts off to the point that $10,000 is nothing in your world. It’s like most people buying a biscuit for breakfast. I mean, a purchase like this doesn’t even move the financial meter.

Remember, there are three things you can do with money — save, spend and give. You’re in an incredible position here, so there’s no reason not to have a little fun. You’ve earned it. Now, you might have to open your own practice when you’re through. I remember the Fiero, and owning something like that might make you unemployable …

I’m kidding, of course. But you guys have done a fantastic job. You’ve been smart with your money, and now there’s nothing wrong with having some fun and buying a little toy.

-Dave Dear Dave, I loaned some money to a good friend recently. He’s going to help me with a job I’m working on, so do you

think I should pay him for the work or just forgive the debt instead?

-Charlie Dear Charlie, The big question is whether or not you’ve already agreed to pay him for the work. Another is how he views the situation. In his mind, he may just be helping a friend and looking at it as he still owes you the money.

If you don’t already have an agreement, my advice would be to ask him what his expectations are. Just talk to him, find out what he’s thinking and figure out what seems fair to you both.

The big thing at this point is that you’re on the same page. If you have already agreed on a certain amount, and the value of the work is pretty close to the amount you loaned him, you might talk to him about the possibility of knocking out the debt that way. He could work off the debt while helping you on this project.

There’s really no right or wrong answer to this question, Charlie.

However, I would recommend not loaning money to friends or family in the future. Sometimes things work out and everyone’s happy. But in most cases it changes the dynamics of the relationship. The Bible says that the borrower is a slave to the lender, and there’s a lot of truth to that statement financially and emotionally.

I’ve seen situations like this go bad and even ruin friendships. It sounds like you two are good buddies and have a great bond, but if someone close to you really needs help, and you’re not enabling bad financial behavior in the process, just make the money a gift.

Sooner or later this kind of thing will mess up a relationship.

Kresha Appointed to Govenor’s Task Force on Child Protection Rep. Ron Kresha, R-Little Falls, is among four legislators, one from each legislative caucus, appointed to the Governor’s Task Force on Child Protection.

The task force, formed after the tragic death of Eric Dean, will review existing statutes, and work to develop changes and possible legislation to ensure child protective services throughout the state are properly handling child abuse claims and cases.

“The death of one child from abuse is one death too many, but I hope our work on this Task Force will ensure no child slips through the cracks again,” Kresha said. “Strong and well-functioning child protective services is so important for the safety of children all across Minnesota, and I am looking forward to working with the 26 members of the Governor’s Task Force to review and develop policies that ensure this never happens again, and that abuse cases are handled properly.”

The team placed 6 points ahead of Duluth for the day. Live Free Without Violence Flag Raised ught for In Honor of Amber Enala Lechuga and Tho the week: Amelia Analesse Ramirez

Days after Governor Mark Dayton declared October Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the number of people killed due to intimate partner violence in 2014 rose to 14.

Amber Elena Lechuga, 22, was killed by a gunshot wound to the head on September 25 in the Springfield apartment she shared with her boyfriend and two children. Amber’s body was found dismembered in the front passenger floor of a burning van in Sleepy Eye, and her head was found nearby in the Cottonwood River. Amber’s boyfriend, 26-year-old Miguel Angel Vasquez, has been charged with her murder.

On March 15, Amelia Analesse Ramirez, 13-months-old, died as a result of multiple blunt-force traumatic injuries caused by her father. According to a criminal complaint, Angel Daniel Ramirez, 19, admitted during questioning that he had punched the 13-month-old girl multiple times, pulled her hair out and threw a cup that hit her eye. Ramirez told authorities that the night before Amelia died he was upset with the child’s mother so he went to the infant’s crib and punched her both in the stomach and the back of the head. Relatives told police that Ramirez was controlling and abusive toward the child’s mother, which was confirmed by the mother. The Cottage Grove man has been charged with second-degree murder.

Women and over 300 participating individuals, organizations, agencies, and universities will raise the Live Free Without Violence flag for one week during Domestic Violence Awareness Month in honor of Amber Elena Lechuga and Amelia Analesse Ramirez and all of Minnesota’s victims of domestic violence homicide. The Live Free Without Violence flag aims to raise domestic violence awareness and spark conversations across Minnesota, from Two Harbors to Carver County.

Strategically placed rows of corn and a lot of teamwork are helping keep more rural roads open in central and southwestern Minnesota this winter by reducing the amount of snow blowing onto roads that are prone to drifting shut, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The standing corn rows are part of a MnDOT program started about 15 years ago that pays farmers to leave corn stalks up in the winter. The corn rows break the wind’s force, causing the snow to collect around the corn rows instead of drifting onto the roads. The rows improve driver visibility, road surface conditions and lower costs of road maintenance.

Under the MnDOT agreement, farmers leave a minimum of six rows of corn in the field in a snow trap area. They get reimbursed using a formula based on yield, production, costs, inconvenience factors and price of corn.

Following directions to get from one place to another is sometimes difficult.

Even using a map or listening to a distant voice speak to us on a global positioning system often creates uncertainty. Often we have feelings of uncertainty until we arrive safely at our intended destination.

There was no doubt in the mind of David for those who wanted directions if a person wanted to enter into the presence of God. It is a clear if/then. “If,” David wrote, “you want to stand in His presence, ‘then’ you must have clean hands and a pure heart.” Hands refer to our actions and hearts refer to our attitudes. Certainly, the word “pure” would eliminate most of us.

In our moments of honesty and openness before God, we all recognize soiled hands and devious hearts. What then are we to do if we want to plead our case before God? Who can say, “I am pure?”

Jesus said, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” There is little doubt that any of us will achieve a pure heart in this life. Was Jesus teasing us? Indeed not!

In the beatitudes Jesus is talking about how we are to live. And He knew that we could never achieve the goals for Christian living that He was talking about.

So, what are we to do? In the beatitudes He is talking about motives! He wants us to have an inner attitude and desire to conspicuously seek the Lord by reading His Word, seeking to know Him and then honoring Him.

Members present: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Robert Maciej, Brian Lange, Joan Olson, Dennis Westrich. City Clerk/Treasurer Reva Mische.

The City Council meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson.

Motion made by Council Member Brian Lange and seconded

by Council Member Robert Maciej to accept the minutes from the September 2nd, 2014 Regular City Council Meeting. Motion carried unanimously.

Motion made by Council Member Robert Maciej and seconded by Council Member Brian Lange to accept the agenda with the addition of a discussion about the provision of street lights along West Walnut. Motion carried unanimously.

Guests and Presentations: City Engineer of SEH, Scott Hedlund, was present to discuss updates concerning the Walnut Avenue Improvements project. The inclusion of street lights along West Walnut near the Roach Development was discussed and planned for.

Scott Hedlund presented an Application for Payment No.1 to C&L Excavating for 2014, Walnut Avenue Improvements. Motion made by Council Member Robert Maciej and seconded by Council Member Joan Olson to approve the Application for Payment No.1 to C&L Excavation for 2014 Walnut Avenue Improvements. Motion carried unanimously.

The Roach Development drainage plan and holding ponds was further discussed. Hedlund provided clarification on recommendation for the provision of a 100 year event pond and a revision of the drainage plan submitted by Roach Development.

Motion made by Council Member Robert Maciej and seconded by Council Member Joan Olson to request the provision of a 100 year event pond and a resubmittal of the drainage plan by Roach Development per Hedlund’s recommendations. Motion was carried 3-2 with Council Member Dennis Westrich and Council Member Brian Lange voting no.

Representatives of Elmdale Township were present to discuss annual winter Snow Removal costs for the 2013-2014 winter season.

Elmdale Township presented an invoice of $3,451.86 while the City of Upsala presented Elmdale Township with an invoice for $7,025. It was noted that the severe winter weather required much more sand and plowing time.

Department Reports: Maintenance Report, Frank Koopmeiners: Both water and sewage usage was down for the month.

• Frank Koopmeiners discussed preparations for Winter Decorations and inquired about the City’s interest in LED bulbs versus regular bulbs. The Decorations will be replaced with regular bulbs this year.

• Frank Koopmeiners informed the Council that he will be flushing hydrants on October 16th during the day.

Fire Department Report, Lange: The Fire Department did not receive the FEMA Grant this year.

They will be looking into other options.

Planning Commission, Lange: Minutes were presented to the City

Council.

UCDC, Olson: Did not meet.

Recreation Board, Johnson: Did not meet.

Unfinished Business: City Clerk Reva Mische provided the Council with an update on the acquisition of Mount Olive Church.

All utilities have been transferred and water will be turned off for the winter months.

The City Council would like to extend their gratitude to the members of Mount Olive Church for working with the City on the transfer.

City Clerk Reva Mische informed the Council that the MN Rural Water Midi-Loan Funds in the amount of $661,440 has been received by the City.

New Business: The City council approved City Clerk Reva Mische’s request for the use of 3 days of her vacation time for the dates of October 14- 16th. City Offices will also be closed on October 13th for the observation of Columbus Day Holiday.

Notice was given to residents and the City Council that the Proposed Assessment Hearing for Unpaid Utility Bills will be held on November 3rd, 2014 at 6:30 p.m.

Financial Report: Motion made by Council Member Robert Maciej and seconded by Council Member Joan Olson to approve the Treasurer’s Report with an August 31st ending bank balance of $77,718.47 as presented by City Treasurer Reva Mische. Motion carried unanimously.

Council members present were Ralph Muellner, Thom Muellner, Dennis Barrett and Andrea Kraska.

There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were Lori Hellmann, Andy Bartkowicz and guests Luella Asmus, Bob and Jeri Ahrens and Ken Messer.

Luella Asmus discussed water drainage issues. Andy was instructed to look at the storm sewer located by the tennis courts Ken Messer discussed water drainage with several properties in the area of his rental property. All parties involved would need to be in agreement before any excavating could take place. The agreement would need to be notarized and submitted to the council. All property lines would need to be clearly established by locating lot markers or having a completed survey.

Ken Messer also discussed the ditch along Minnesota Street along his rental property. The culvert on Woodman Street needs to stay open and the ditch needs to be as it was prior to any excavating.

Bob and Jeri Ahrens were in attendance to obtain approval to move in a new modular home placed on a new full basement. The current sewer service line would be replaced at the time the work is being done. A motion was made

by Andrea Kraska to approve the building permit application for Bob and Jeri Ahrens to install a new modular home with a new full basement and the removal of the old home. Setback requirements are twenty five feet west from the edge of Bovee Street South, and five feet from any adjoining property. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members

voting in favor, motion carried.

The following water/wastewater/maintenance items were discussed: 1. Andy was instructed to contact the City of Long Prairie to make arrangements to have the sewer main from The Junction to Cartway Road jetted this fall.

2. The bathrooms located by the softball fields will need to be winterized and closed up for the season. The bathroom by the picnic shelter will remain open for the time being.

3. Discontinue service for the bathroom at Laughlin Park effective November 1, 2014. Andy will monitor this bathroom during the winter months.

4. The Lions Club would like to trim some trees where the tent is set up by the tractor pull site. Lion’s club members will do the work if city staff would haul away the brush.

5. Sump Pump inspections will need to take place. A letter will be composed and sent to residents notifying them of the inspection and the time frame in which they will be completed.

The council discussed having a fall area wide clean up. The matter was tabled but will be revisited in the spring.

There were no yard clean-ups for council consideration.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve Resolution No. 2014-14, A Resolution Accepting $1,623.15 Lions Club Donation for Community Appreciation. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried. The above stated resolution may be read in its entirety at the Clerk’s office.

The Mayor updated the council on the Labor Day weekend car show and tractor pull. There was a good turn-out for the car show and was well received. The tractor pull had good attendance with 147 total pulls. The Mayor wishes to thank the organizations that help keep this City vibrant.

The Clerk was instructed to proceed with delinquent utility bills as allowed by ordinance.

A motion was made by Ralph Muellner to approve the various fund transfers as follows: $768.36 from the Fire Fund to the Fire Hall Debt Service Fund, and $83.03 from the General Fund, of which $25.03 goes to the Water Fund and $58 goes to the Sewer Fund for Fire Hall and Library utilities. Share a Passion for Deer Hunting During Youth Deer Season Oct. 16-19 Youth ages 10-15 can participate in a special deer season that runs from Thursday, Oct. 16 to Sunday, Oct. 19, in 27 permit areas of southeastern and northwestern Minnesota, including the 601 Twin Cities metro permit area.

“Youth can hunt with a mentor in a special season that’s all about putting the attention on the youth during the whole hunting experience,” said Mike Kurre, mentoring program coordinator with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Deer permit areas open to the hunt are: 101, 105, 111, 114, 201, 203, 208, 209, 256, 257, 260, 263, 264, 267, 268, 338, 339, 341, 342, 343, 344, 345, 346, 347, 348, 349 and 601. In certain portions of permit areas 346 and 349 in Winona, Houston, and Filmore counties, there will also be an early antlerless season for all licensed hunters who purchase early antlerless permits.

Youth must meet all firearms safety requirements, purchase a license and use the appropriate firearm for the permit area in which they are hunting. Youth may take a deer of either sex and may only take one deer during the youth season.

An adult mentor must accompany the youth but may not hunt or carry a firearm and does not need a license. However, in the early antlerless sub-permit areas of 346 and 349, the adult can participate in the early antlerless hunt while being a mentor. Hunters and mentors must meet blaze orange requirements.

Public land is open as is private land, provided the youth hunter has landowner permission.

Participating in the youth deer season does not affect eligibility of youth to participate in the regular firearms deer season but any deer harvested do count against the youth’s season bag limit. By Linda Radimecky, DNR Area Park Naturalist Q: Why does this year seem to be particularly good for fall colors?

A: Some of those magnificent colors we’re seeing this fall are there all summer; it’s just you can’t see them because of the green chlorophyll in the leaves. As our days get shorter and the temperatures cool down, trees cease green chlorophyll production, allowing the yellow chlorophyll to show.

Any sugar compounds trapped in the leaf react with each other in the presence of sunlight to form the red, orange and purple pigments called anthocyanins. The more sun, the more brilliant the colors. The weather so far this season is perfect for brilliant fall colors – sunny dry days and chilly, but not freezing nights. The slightest change – too hot, too cold, too wet or too dry – can slow the process or cause trees to lose leaves before they change color.
