The ABCs of Management -By Harvey Mackay As I began this list of management ABCs, I was determined not to confuse management with leadership. There are leaders at all levels, whether we identify them with a special title or simply recognize their ability to direct their colleagues.

Managers, on the other hand, have responsibilities to the organization to achieve results, often by working with the leaders.

Here are my thoughts on what managers need to know: A is for advice. Good advice doesn’t get old. Good advice is never cheap, and cheap advice is never good.

B is for bringing out the best in others to get them to believe in what you believe in: your employees.

C is for caring is contagious. Help spread it around.

D is for diverse. You get the best results from people with diverse ideas who respect each other and are committed to each other’s successes.

E is for excellence. Managers should demand nothing less than excellence because they have set an example of demanding excellence from themselves.

F is for first. Running your own business is no endeavor for anyone who feels anything other than the urge to be the first person in the door in the morning and the one they have to drag out at night.

G is for good. The trick isn’t to get good at everything in your business. The trick is getting to know what you are good at and figuring out how to get better.

H is for hero. As much as you would like to be a hero, look to the heroes in your company and acknowledge and encourage their contributions.

I is for impression. What’s the easiest way to check the first impression you’re making? Have someone call your company to check up on how the call is handled. Find

out what your customers already know about your business.

J is for judging. We consciously or unconsciously judge a lot of companies by the attitudes of their average workers – the store clerk, driver, receptionist, and so on.

Don’t underestimate their impact.

K is for kindness. Treat yourself and others with respect. Plant seeds of kindness by doing something kind every day.

L is for listen. You can’t learn anything if you are doing all the talking. Listen to your staff because they often have great solutions and ideas for improvement.

M is for money. Managing money is as important as managing people. If you don’t manage your resources well, you’ll have to manage the mess you’ve made.

N is for nice, as in nice guys can and often do finish first. N should never be for nasty or negative.

O is for obligation. Your first obligation to your company and employees is to set them up for success.

P is for pride. Take pride in your company. Take pride in your employees.

Take pride in your products. But check your personal pride at the door.

Q is for qualifications. Help your employees develop the qualifications they need to take the next step in their careers.

R is for right. Always make time to do it right the first time. Otherwise you’ll have to take time to do it over.

S is for sales. A manager needs to sell ideas, plans and products to staff before a project can take off.

T is for team. The people who make it big in business are those who are able to put together a team and know what to do with it.

U is for up front. Being up front builds trust. Customers and employees appreciate honesty and will be more willing to work with people who respect them enough to tell them when there’s a problem.

V is for versatile. Of the many skills

managers need to bring to the job, versatility is key to understanding and relating to different challenges they face daily.

W is for walk your plant or office floor at least once a day. Be visible and available.

X is for eXpert. Spend at least 10 percent of your budget on the best professional advice available before you spend a nickel on anything else.

Y is for yesterday. The decisions you made yesterday will determine where you go tomorrow.

Z is for zenith. An exceptional manager guides a company to its zenith.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Just Thinking

Have you ever heard someone or maybe yourself say, “I really don’t have any time for myself.” Life is so busy today it seems that we are being constantly approached from every side. We sometimes get the feeling that our being is being pulled in many different directions. Do we sometimes wish that our surrounding world would just quiet down?

We are living in a world that is becoming faster every day. We feel that in order to keep up with the world, we need to cause ourselves to constantly have our time be invaded by modern influences. If we are on a farm, the noise of the machinery invades our life, so we have cabs to reduce the sound.

The cabs are very helpful keeping the noise out, which makes it more convenient to use the radio and the cell phone. We may need to text someone and invade their private time. Today’s roadways allow us to get to our destination in much less time, of course we still have the radio and the cell phone.

Here in Minnesota it’s illegal to use the cell phone while driving, but sometimes we are waiting for a very important call and the person calling us doesn’t have a warning on their system that says we are driving and can’t answer the phone at that time.

We enter our living room and instantly turn on the TV, why, I don’t really know, other than to see if there is something worth watching tonight. We are then entertained, or possibly told lies or half-truths about what is really going on in this country. This takes up a couple of hours of our time and then we move to the TV in the bedroom. Are we addicted to these interruptions in our lives?

There was a time when an individual had more time to themselves. To realize the difference, we need to spend a little time on a farm years ago. They were able to

experience more time to themselves.

Going back a century, we find people walking to a destination, whether it was to town, the neighbors, relatives or to church.

An hour walk was accepted as common place. It was quiet, interrupted only by natures sounds, a comment of a fellow walker, or Mother telling one of the kids to stay out of the mud. The destination was more meaningful due to the physical energy spent getting there.

Those days also included horses. If a load was to be delivered or if it seemed worth the time to catch, harness and hitch them up, they did make the trip easier, but still offered an extended period of quiet personal time. Yes, there were the sounds of nature, the squeaking and rattle of the wagon and the occasional sounds of the harness and the horses. No outside sources of interruption.

If you were farming with horses, it too was quiet. There was no loud machine or tractor sound. Imagine sitting on the mower or cultivator and being able to hear the crows carry on their noisy discussions or the blackbirds tweeting their happy sounds.

This probably lasted all day and could really be considered extended personal time.

We wanted to become more productive and better informed, but it has come at a price. That price is that some of these advancements have taken away our ability to “think our own thoughts.” We now live with more noise and external influences that are not always acceptable to our actual thinking. Our minds tell us to shut it off, but our drive for success says “keep on keeping on.”

Election Voting

Wiechman, Clerk/Head Judge, Millwood Township, 320-249-1242 As a township clerk and head judge, I have been receiving an increasing number of inquiries about the upcoming election, and the accessibility of voting, especially given recent facebook posts enumerating mail-in ballot precincts within Stearns County.

As I am head election judge for Millwood Township, an in-person voting precinct, I do not know all of the township and city boards who have decided to transfer to mail-in ballot voting only. To be clear, this was a decision made by your local governing body, not Stearns County, the State of Minnesota, or any other organization. Many of these decisions were made for myriad reasons, and prior to COVID-19. While some precincts may be voting by mail for the first time in this election, there are no in-person precincts being closed because of COVID-19.

If your precinct is mail-in ballot only, all registered voters should have received a notice in the mail, seen public notices published in local papers, and should have received an official mail-in ballot via the postal service. If you are unsure of your voting procedures this election cycle, please contact your township board or city council.

For those precincts which are mail-in voting only, you can cast your ballot in several ways. You can fill out the ballot and return it through the mail; follow the included instructions on proper procedure to ensure your ballot is counted. As long as your ballot is postmarked by election day, and received within several days after the election, the county officials will still process your mail-in ballot.

You may also cast a mail-in, and absentee ballot, in-person through Monday, November 2.

bring your completed mail-in ballot with you, as no ballots are present at precincts until election day. These locations include: Melrose, Sauk Centre, Holdingford, Paynesville, Kimball, the new St. Cloud Service Center by Fleet Farm and downtown St. Cloud by the courthouse. If you reside in a mail-in ballot precinct, and you did not vote before the election on Tuesday, November 3, you may still vote on election day; however, you will have to do so, in-person, at one of the St. Cloud locations previously mentioned. You may not vote in any other precinct but your own.

If you have questions or concerns about whether you are a registered voter, the voting status of your precinct, or need to request a mailin/absentee ballot, begin by using mnvotes.org.

If you do not have access to, or are unable to navigate the internet, it may be helpful to contact a family member, friend or neighbor to assist you. Also remember your city and township clerks are in continuous contact with Stearns County and are more than capable of providing you with assistance. You may also contact the Stearns County elections office for assistance: 320-656-3920. As the county is very busy at coordinating a presidential election, it may be best to initially contact your local governing body; however, feel free to seek assistance in whatever way is most convenient for you.

Keep in mind the general election is on Tuesday, November 3, 7:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m., and according to Minnesota election law, employers may not stop you from taking a reasonable amount of time to vote during business hours.

While Minnesota allows same-day registration, it is best to register to vote prior to election day.

If you live in a mail-in ballot precinct, do not wait until the last minute to complete your ballot and mail it in. Once again mnvotes.org is a great source of election information, and can also be used to track the status of your mail-in/ absentee ballot.

Shirley B. Uphoff, age 86 of Greenwald, passed away on Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at the St. Benedict’s Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A private family Mass will be held at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald with interment in the parish cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Shirley Bernice Hoeschen was born September 26, 1934 in Freeport, Minnesota to Conrad and Elizabeth (Kleve) Hoeschen. She was united in marriage to Virgil “Vir” Uphoff on June 23, 1956 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport, Minnesota.

Shirley lived in Greenwald, Minnesota for most of her life where she immersed herself in the community by being actively involved with St. Andrew’s Catholic Church and School. She worked as an assistant elementary school teacher and a bank teller for many years, sang on the church choir, baked pie and bread for Barley Days and her neighbors, participated in cheerleading for local baseball team and involved in many other activities in the community. Her commitment to the community, and her friends was uncompromising. She was always a welcome, friendly face that everyone recognized.

After retiring from the bank, she continued her passion for sewing by volunteering at Pine Villa in Melrose. She also enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, baking, quilting, and watching all the Minnesota sports teams.

Survivors include her children, Paula (Wendell) Daluge of St. Cloud, Greg (Tina) Uphoff of Plymouth, Sam (Sara) Uphoff of Elk River, and Gina (Tim) Och of Sartell, nine grandchildren, and sister, Judy (Ray “Skip”) Kmitch of St. Cloud.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Vir Uphoff on December 29, 2012; parents; infant grandson, Jake Uphoff; brothers, Roger and LeRoy Hoeschen; and sisters, Donna Kerfeld, Lorene Pfau, and Charlene Petermeier.

Margaret Jean Dinndorf

Margaret Jean Dinndorf, 90, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, surrounded by her loving daughters.

Per Margaret’s request, private family services have been planned; interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery of Sauk Centre.

Margaret was born on April 12, 1930, the daughter of Emil and Helen (Cripe) Studanski.

She attended Sauk Centre high school, and graduated with the class of 1948.

Margaret will remain in the hearts of her children, Donny (Vi) Dinndorf of St. Augusta, Jeanne Birr of Avon, Patricia (Tony) Burns of Albany, and Steven (Callie) Dinndorf of Savage; grandchildren, Katie (Chris Kruger) Dinndorf, Jim Dinndorf, Scott (Liana) Birr, Hannah Birr, Bobby Burns, Becky Burns, Brooke Burns, Lea (Doug) Fontaine, and Josh Dinndorf; six great-grandchildren; siblings, James (MaryAnn) Studanski and Geri (Mike) Reinardy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Emil and Helen Studanski; siblings, Annie (Stan) Nelson and Emily (Kenny) Essler; grandson, Joel Birr; son-in-law, Roger Birr; and great-granddaughter, Josie Grace Birr.

Irma H. Otte

Irma H. Otte of Sauk Centre, died peacefully in the presence of her family on Thursday, October 8, 2020 at C en tr aC ar e- S au k Centre Care Center in Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, October 14 at St Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Rev. Greg Paffel officiated with interment in the parish cemetery.

Irma Hinnenkamp was born August 13, 1920 in Melrose, Minnesota to Ben, Jr. and Mary (Angelbeck) Hinnenkamp. On August 30, 1939 she married Casimir Otte at St, Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. The couple farmed near Sauk Centre until retiring in 1974. She began working at the Sauk Centre Nursing Home in 1975, where she worked for about 12 years.

Irma was a member of St Paul’s Catholic Church and Christian Mothers. Irma enjoyed bowling, playing cards, gardening, watching Twins baseball, socializing with family and friends, especially the grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Irma celebrated her 100th birthday in August with her family. She was so happy that she was able to make that milestone.

Survivors include her children, Joyce (Jerry) Schlangen of Cold Spring, Gary (Peg) Otte of Victoria, son-in-law, Ray Freecheck of East Bethel; ten grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and sister, Bernadine Winter of Greenwald.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Casimir Otte on August 15, 2009; daughter, Arlene Freecheck on August 25, 2009; parents; brothers and sisters, Theckla Blenker, Clarence Hinnenkamp, Ludwina Brake; Collette Von Wahlde, Robert Hinnenkamp, Isadore Hinnenkamp, Herbert Hinnenkamp, and Ben Hinnenkamp.

Serving as casket bearers were Brian Freecheck, Karla Freecheck, Brad Schlangen, Corey Schlangen, Melissa Guggenberger, and Joleen Schutz. Scripture bearer was Michelle Sandager.

M a s s of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie for Kenneth Rausch who died Friday, October 9, 2020 at his home in Long Prairie.

The Rev. Omar Guanchez officiated and burial was in the parish cemetery.

Ken was born November 1, 1952 in Long Prairie to Lawrence & Rita (Zwilling) Rausch. He married Rhonda Engdahl on September 14, 1973 in Long Prairie. Ken has lived his entire life in Long Prairie and worked for the Todd County Highway Department for over 35 years. He is a member of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church where he was very active especially with the music.

Ken cared very much about other people and was always busy taking care his family. He loved Rhonda so much, he was very devoted to her and always put her first. Ken had a great memory and always could tell you specific dates and numbers.

He is survived by his sons, Jason of Watkins; Jeff (Angie) of Prinsburg; brothers, Bob (Linda) of Bellevue, NE; Ron (Julie) of Dubuque, IA; and 7 grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Rhonda on 11/7/2012, and infant sister Lois.

Marinus “Rini” Verwijs

Marinus “Rini” Verwijs, age 75 of Avon, passed away Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, October 15 at Avon Community Church in Avon, Minnesota.

A private family interment will be at St. Benedict’s Cemetery in Avon.

Visitation will be from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at the church in Avon.

Marinus Verwijs was born June 12, 1945 in Roosendaal, Nederland to Marinus and Zoetje (Thoutenhoofd) Verwijs. Rini was a hard worker and would always drop what he was doing to lend a helping hand to people in need.

He was brilliant at fixing anything; a modern day Macgyver. He loved the outdoors and was quite the sportsman, boxer, and a highly accomplished runner. He participated in many races placing 19th out of many hundreds in one particular race when he was in his sixties. He lived his life with a strong determination and never gave up. Rini was a Christian man who knew the Lord and loved to talk to people about Jesus and his faith.

Rini was welcomed home into his Father’s loving arms after many years of battling cancer, myasthenia gravis, and then recently succumbing to Covid-19.

Russell “Russie” Wolf

Russell F. “Russie” Wolf of Albany, went to the angels on Monday, October 12, 2020.

He died at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Tuesday, October 20 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Julius Beckermann, O.S.B. officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Russ was born May 31, 1944 to Adam Edward Wolf and Veronica (Holthaus) Wolf.

He was the last of 11 children (the baby). He married Joyce Beuning on December 31, 1966.

The couple had three boys. Russ worked at Kraft in Melrose for over 30 years. He liked NHRA, Albany Huskie Football, T-bones, and black cherry malts. Russie enjoyed watching and playing with his grandkids.

Russie is survivied by his best friend for 62 years, Joyce Wolf; children, Jeff (Renee) Wolf and their children, Adam (Leah), Tyler, and Carter, Jody (Beth) Wolf and their children, Griffin, Garrett, Cale, Emma, and Clay, and Cory (Kitty) Wolf and their children, Alex (Rachael), Nathan, and Hannah; brothers and sisters, Ralph (Arlene), Robert (Bev), Ruth, Roger “Butch”, Renee “Sugar”, and Rodney (Barb); brother-in-law, Al Torberg; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Anthony F. “Tony” Welle

Anthony F. “Tony” Welle, age 84 of Melrose, passed away on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at St. Benedict’s Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Freeport MN. Rev. Daniel Walz officiating and Deacon Ernie Kociemba. Interment will be in the parish cemetery with military honors, provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Anthony Fred Welle was born January 16, 1936 in Greenwald, Minnesota to Math and Rose (Kulzer) Welle. In 1954-56, Tony served in the U.S. Army. While in Korea he served in Battery A, 48th Field Artillery Battalion, 7th Infantry Division. He was honorably discharged in 1956 with a Good Conduct Medal. He was united in marriage to Barbara Ann Welle on April 22, 1958 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Tony worked with family at Welle Implement in Greenwald.

He thrived using his talent in fixing anything mechanical. In 1980, he moved his family to Little Birch Lake. There he enjoyed entertaining family, ice fishing and spearing, snowmobiling, hunting, and cutting wood. He loved his family, and all the grand and great grand babies! He cherished his Catholic faith and traditions. In 1998, Tony and Barb moved to the farm near New Munich.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Catholic United Financial, and the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Barb Welle of Melrose, children: Tom (Karen) Clear Lake; Linda Meyer (Tom) Melrose; Eric (Shanna) Zimmerman; Sarah Gregory (Paul) Belgrade; Kathryn Muller (Jarrod) Sioux Falls, SD; Lisa (Scott) Mattson St. Cloud; Anne Hoeschen (Scott) Freeport; Jenifer Sampson (Shaw) St. Cloud; 30 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Alice Moyer of Naperville, IL, and Yvonne (Alvin) Fuchs of Spring Hill, MN and in-laws.

Lois C. Wedl

Private family burial will take place at St. Benedict’s Parish Cemetery in Avon for Lois C. Wedl, 75, of Avon, who passed away peacefully at the Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta on Saturday, October 10, 2020. A Celebration of Life will take place in Spring 2021.

Lois was born on May 14, 1945 in Albany to Paul and Martha (Moening) Wengler. She married Robert “Bob” Wedl on June 27, 1964 in Albany. They moved to New Richmond, WI for three years before moving and residing in Bloomington for over 40 years. After retirement in 2008, they moved back to Avon where she put up a courageous and spirited fight against cancer. Lois worked as a sales supporter for different insurance agencies for over 40 years. She deeply enjoyed antiquing, collecting dishes, shopping and travel. Lois’ family meant the world to her and she was always curious as to what is happening in their lives. It was important that her family was “set up” to be successful. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her husband, Bob of Avon; children, Monte (Heather) of Incline Village, NV and Marnie (Travis) Stone of Robbinsdale; grandchildren, Derek, Corrie, Malorie and Ava. She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Pat.

Dorine M. Schwagel

Dorine M. Schwagel, of Spring Hill, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, October 9, 2020 at Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta, Minnesota at the age of 77 years, 9 months, and 5 days.

An outdoor Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 17 by the Grotto at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Spring Hill with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will follow the Mass in the parish cemetery.

There will be no visitation prior to Mass at the cemetery. Please bring your own lawn chair.

Dorine Marie Schwagel was born January 4, 1943 in Belgrade, Minnesota to Conrad and Marie (Neubauer) Schwieters. She was united in marriage to John Schwagel on September 11, 1965 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill, Minnesota. Dorine worked at Empire Memorials in Melrose, Minnesota, after graduating second highest in her class from Melrose High School in 1961. John and Dorine purchased the grocery store in Spring Hill in 1965 and operated Schwagel Store for 55 years. She loved the many generations that passed thru the store over the years as much as she loved candy.

Dorine was a lifelong resident of Spring Hill. She embroidered countless sets of flour sack towels and her favorite being the Cute Rabbits pattern.

She loved her flower garden, playing cards, solving word finds, watching game shows, and feeding the town kitties. Her biggest passion was bringing the community of Spring Hill together to serve the parish of St. Michaels. Everything from mowing lawn, picking up sticks, to cleaning the church and parish house.

Dorine was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and, together with John, served as the church caretaker for 33 years. She was also a member of the St. Michael’s Christian Women’s Society and Catholic United Financial.

Survivors include her two children, Terrence (Angela) Schwagel of Victoria and Traci (Trevor) Studanski of St. Cloud; and brother-in-law, Linus Schwagel of Mortons Gap, Kentucky.

Dorine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Schwagel on January 31, 2016; and sister, Alice Schwieters.

Memorials are preferred to Quiet Oaks Hospice House, 5537 Galaxy Road, St. Cloud, MN 56301.

Fran “Mootz” Thelen, age 87 of New Munich, died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at her home in New Munich, Minnesota.

Francella Elizabeth Maritsch was born June 1, 1933 in St. Martin, Minnesota to Henry and Helen (Mayers) Maritsch. On June 23, 1955 she married Otto Thelen at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich.

Fran worked as a bartender in New Munich for many years and later worked at Wal-Mart in Sauk Centre.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Catholic United Financial, St. Rita’s Mission Group, and the Christian Women. Fran enjoyed bowling, gardening, quilting, crocheting, and knitting, watching the Minnesota Twins, and loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Fran was famous for baking her homemade overnight buns and making her dressing from scratch.

Survivors include her children, Sharon (Joe) Schwieters of Greenwald, June (Norm) Schwieters of Holdingford, Paula (Rueben) Schwieters of New Munich, Lynn Van Drehle (Jim Rieland) of New Munich, Scott (Carol) Thelen of New Munich, Kelly (Tim) Thielen of New Munich, and Kurt (Peg) Thelen of New Munich; 14 grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren with three on the way; and brother-in-law, Oswald Thelen of St. Joseph.

Fran was preceded in death by her husband, Otto Thelen on December 2, 2015; parents; sisters, Marcelline Dobos and Eileen Jonas; and son-in-law, Alan Van Drehle.

Leander “Lee” Bieniek

Leander I. Bieniek, 87 year old resident of Holdingford, MN passed away peacefully on Friday, October 9 at the Landings of Sauk Rapids. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, October 14 at St. Hedwigs Catholic Church in Holdingford. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Leander Bieniek was born on August 17, 1933 in Opole, Minnesota to the late Victor and Julia (Kuklok) Bieniek. He grew up in the Opole area where he attended school through the eighth grade. He was united in marriage to Louise Reishel on September 29, 1954 at St. Josephs Catholic Church in St. Joseph.

Leander worked the following throughout his life: Supervisor at Landy Packing, drove bus for Trobec’s bus in St. Stephen and owned and operated Lee’s Market in Holdingford. Lee played the concertina in the “KML Band” for many years. He enjoyed socializing, going to bologna days, snowmobiling in his younger days, ice fishing, hand rolling his own cigarettes and an occasional trip to the casino.

He was a former member of the Eagles Club and was a current member of St. Hedwigs Catholic Church in Holdingford.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Joan (Jerry) Pilarski of Rockville, Ken (Jodi) Bieniek of Rice, Mary Jo (Jeff) Klein of Holdingford, Ron (Annette) Bieniek of Monticello, Dan Bieniek of Holdingford; siblings, Butch (Carol) Bieniek of St. Cloud, Marcel (Kathy) Bieniek of Sauk Rapids, Vic (Bonnie) Bieniek of Little Falls, Marlene (Dennis) Symalla of Stillwater, MN and Vicki (Don) Carlson of North Branch, MN; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; sisterin-law, Selma Reischel of Waite Park.

Judith Stevens

Judi Stevens, age 78, of Sartell, MN formerly of Upsala, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on October 11, 2020. Judi was a longtime resident and homemaker in Upsala MN. Due to Covid-19 private funeral services will be held Thursday, October 29, 2020 at Celebration Lutheran Church, Sartell, MN. Burial will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, MN. Judi was an amazing and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, friend, volunteer, and homemaker. Judi was always very active in her church and enjoyed Ruth Circle, teaching Release Time and Sunday School.

Judi loved sewing, quilting, baking, cooking, crocheting, ceramics classes and listening to Elvis. She loved tending to her beautiful vegetable and flower gardens, boating on Pine Lake as well as trips to Grand Marais, The Boundary Waters and yearly trips to Mexico and The Dominican Republic. She loved animals and was known to have lots of outdoor friends; she once befriended a blackbird that she nursed back to life that followed her and her dogs around the yard when she went outside. Judi loved to talk and made friends wherever she went. She loved her family and set family traditions that will be carried forward as part of her legacy. Judi’s love and famous stories will never be forgotten; we love you Mom! Survived by beloved husband of 58 years, Dan; children: Toby, Kristin (Joel), Carey (Jared); grandchildren: Mychal, Marissa, Eli, Libby, Daniel, Christopher, Matthew, Olivia (John), Lexie and Sophie; great grandchild: Lydia. Judi’s grandchildren meant the world to her and she will be remembered fondly for her autographed/ dated handmade holiday decorations, bunnies, ornaments, quilts and doilies.

Grandma was known for her amazing pies, annual Easter egg hunts, life stories, and delicious Sunday/holiday dinners.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for September. Claims list included claims 34923501 for a total of $36,783.32.This included the 2nd half of the fire contract and the crack sealing for 2020.

Ray made the motion to approve the claims as listed.

Mike made the second, Motion carried. Mail included emails from the Auditor’s office about canvassing the election and a postcard about dual fuel from Minnesota Power.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray stated he had been called to the Town Hall concerning the septic line that was being worked on and leading to the hall. The cost would be approx. $3,000 for repair of the line that comes into the building. Will need to have Rahn’s reconnect the gas line. After some discussion, it was decided not to apply for the noxious weed grant the County sent information about. Ray spoke with Erv about opening a culvert on Ascot Rd. which had filled with dirt. Ray also reported he found a motor and transmission in the ditch along 341st.

Additional agenda item: Discussion on the Cares Funding Act- It was decided that in order to provide sanitary conditions for those coming into the town hall during this time of pandemic, there was a need for some updates and replacement of items that were nearing the end of service time. Ron spoke about dual fuel, however, it was decided to not be cost effective.

Discussion on the old water heater- it was decided that since the Township members did not use a lot of hot water, an on-demand system would be the best option.

Ron made a motion to accept the bid from Neville Hardware at approx. $900.00 installed. Ray made the second. Motion carried.

Ron presented the new voting booths he located at Election Source at a cost of $861.00 for 2-3 person units. These will be easier to keep clean and sanitize after each voter. Ray made the motion to order 2- 3 person units. Mike made the second. Motion carried.

Discussion on tables and chairs that will be able to be wiped down after use. Ray made the motion to order 6 chairs at approx. $109.00 each. Mike made the second.

Motion carried. Ray also made a motion to purchase 26 ft. tables and 2- 8ft. tables. These were from Sam’s Club and approx. $49.00 for the 6 ft. and $79.00 each for the 8ft. ones. Ray made the motion to purchase the tables. Mike made the second. Motion carried.

Discussion on the cost of new flooring, something smooth and easier to keep clean. Mike made the motion to go with the bid from Hennen’s in Freeport, at a cost of approx. $7,000.00. Ray made the second.

Motion carried. Ray will contact Hennen’s to begin as soon as possible. As the Township computer is several years old and chrome books were recommended for the board members in this time of pandemic and remote meetings. Mike made the motion to replace the desktop and order chrome books for all the board members. This cost would be approx. $3,853. Ray made the second. Motion carried. Mike suggested handicap accessible ramps for the entrance door.

These would run approx. $200.00. Ray made the motion to check into those. Mike made the second. Motion carried. Ron will look into a new rug to protect the new flooring at the entrance.

Canvass Election- Mike made a motion to have the canvass meeting on Thursday, November 12, at 8:00 pm at the Township Hall. Ron made the second, Motion carried.

Mike made the motion to use the same election judges that were appointed for the Primary Election in August. Ray made the second. Motion carried.

Car Fire: October 4, 2020: At 2:25 a.m. a passerby came across a car in the ditch that was on fire at the intersection of Co. Rd. 39 and 245th Ave. in Albany Twp., just south of St. Anthony. No one was around the car and ammunition in the car started to fire off due to the heat.

The Albany Fire Department arrived on scene, shortly after the deputies, and quickly extinguished the flames. After the fire was put out, deputies found several guns and ammo in the smoking car.

It did appear that the driver may have turned too wide and then went into the ditch; the driver tried to get out of the ditch, and that may have started the grass underneath the vehicle on fire.

Car Crash: October 9, 2020: At approximately 7:41 p.m. received the report of a crash with injuries at the intersection of County Road 17 and 165th Avenue in Holding Township, approximately 1 mile east of the City of Holdingford.

When deputies arrived at the crash scene, they found two vehicles in the ditch. Both had sustained significant damage. The first vehicle was a 2006 Honda Civic that was being driven by Richard Block, 46, of Little Falls. The second vehicle was a 2009 Chevy Impala that was being driven by Daniel Walz, 16, of Holdingford. A passenger in the second vehicle was identified as Alex Fussy, 16, of Little Falls.

Preliminary investigation indicates that Block was driving his 2006 Honda Civic eastbound on County Road 17 while Walz was driving his 2009 Chevy Impala southbound on 165 Avenue. It appears Walz went through the intersection without stopping at the stop sign. The front of Block’s vehicle struck the passenger side door of Walz’s car. Walz and Fussy were treated on scene and transported to the St. Cloud Hospital by Mayo Ambulance. Block was transported to the hospital by private vehicle.

Holdingford Rescue and Mayo Ambulance assisted at the crash scene. The crash remains under investigation.

MN Power Phone Scam: The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office wants residents to be aware of a scam that has been circulating. According to the Sheriff’s Office, residents have been receiving phone calls from a male party with a foreign accent claiming he is from MN Power. The caller states that they are going to shut off the power unless they pay an outstanding bill. The caller gives a short time frame, 30 minutes to one hour for the bill to be paid. In one instance, the resident called MN Power and confirmed it was a scam and did not release any information.

Sheriff Larsen urges residents to use caution and never send or give out personal information in response to an unexpected request. It is common for scammers to use fear and sometimes threaten people, to gather the personal information they are after. Scammers will use some of your public information to appear legitimate, however new scams are continuously being reported, so stay vigilant and don’t release personal information unless you have verified who you are speaking with.

You can’t do something if you haven’t been taught how to do it, and hopefully this is the case with your boyfriend.

You mentioned marriage, so that tells me you’re both taking this relationship seriously—that you’re in the process of making sure you want to spend the rest of your lives with each other. Bring it up gently, and tell him why you’re concerned.

Share your hopes and dreams for the future with him. You might even offer to help him make out a monthly budget. That way, once he understands the process and value of spending money on paper before the month begins, it will be easier for him to stick to it.

Dear Motor Medics, I have owned my 2013 Prius since new. I asked the dealership where I purchased it to perform all recommended services as needed for the car when they are due. Over the years some fluids were changed, and others were not even though it now has over 150k miles on it. I was into an independent repair shop for an oil change last week and they not only told me but showed me that the car needed front brakes and that the hybrid coolant was low and it tested as bad even though it looked very clean. Since I was at the dealership, shouldn’t they have done all these things and noticed that my brakes were so worn?

Cars all have some sort of recommended time and mileage chart to dictate approximate times that certain services should be done; however, they are not set in stone. Therefore, it is important to not only have a shop to make your repairs, but also to have a working relationship with the service department and the same person if at all possible. The reason for this is that every car is driven differently and therefore the needs of service will be different. We also find that what is recommended in the factory book is not always the best times for service. Develop that relationship and communicate what is best for you.
