Because I have a birthday coming up, I get plenty of ribbing about getting older from my peers. (For the record, I usually reciprocate.)

But one of my closest friends recently forwarded an email that took a more serious view about life. It said: “Available for a limited time only. Limit one per person. I had to read and reread this several times. This got me thinking about how fragile life is. I usually don’t pass along messages about personal feelings, but this email really resonated with me.

What does this have to do with business? Nothing – and everything. As the saying goes, “don’t spend so much time making a living that you forget to make a life.”

Sometimes, what we care about the most gets all used up and goes away. So while we have it, we should love it, care for it, fix it when it’s broken and heal it when it’s sick. This is true for marriage, children with bad report cards, aging parents and grandparents, co-workers and anyone close to us. We keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth it.

Life is important, just like the people we know who are special. Suppose one morning you never wake up, do all your friends know you care about them?

Maybe it’s time to let them know how you feel.

When things get tough are you the kind of person who starts complaining?

If you do, you might want to stop and take note of the things in your life that are good, instead of focusing on the

things that seem to be going wrong for you. It’s easy to fall into whining. But it can become a bad habit if you don’t take stock of the good things in your life once in a while.

The trick is to not take things for granted, and though that sounds simple, people often cannot master this way of thinking. Sometimes this arises from the idea that life owes us better than we are receiving. Sometimes it arises from habits we have mindlessly picked up from other people. But whining and complaining won’t likely change your situation or how you feel. When you are stricken by the poor-little-me blues, rescue yourself by trying some of the tactics I use: • Stop and smell the roses. My sister, Margie, is always telling me this.

Take some time out to acknowledge the good things in life. Take the day off and go to the zoo, take a bike ride or a walk to enjoy the beauty of nature.

• Get up and do something – for someone else. If you are lying around your house ruminating about your own problems, one of the best ways to get back on track is to find a way to help someone who needs it. Volunteer at a foodbank, cook dinner for an ailing neighbor or just give a stranger on Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Live In’s

In past years, having individuals live in your house, was very common. They would usually have their own room, which was paid for by the individual’s labor or a small predetermined rent payment. Meals were often included as part of the living arrangement.

There was in some cases a lack of convenient school bus service and the grade or high school student lived at a location nearer to the school. In this case, the student usually performed duties at the new home to pay the rent.

Teachers in the early country schools were usually newly graduated from a preparatory school and needed a place to live. Their rent was usually subsidized by the local school district.

Individuals working at a job, which required that they be in the area for a short period of time, frequently lived in a local home. Their board and room was usually determined on a daily or weekly basis.

An aged relative may either have a person live with them or they may move into a child’s home. Nursing homes, assisted living facilities or board and care locations were not available in the past. It was an accepted and almost required to offer a home to an aged parent. The live-in situation was

sometimes quite disruptive, but no other solution was available.

There were also rooming houses that would rent rooms to individuals, who were temporarily in need of a place to live, due to family disruption or loss of a home due to fire or storm. These homes were usually a way for a widow to create an income for her personal needs.

My grandparents had an individual who would appear each fall and spend the winter in their home. They had an extra bedroom, which was already heated, so it was not a problem for him to stay there. He would help with the wood cutting and farm chores during the winter months and would eat all of his meals with the family. I’m not certain if it was due to my grandmother’s requirement, or if it was from his personal desire, but he attended church regularly while he lived with them. When spring arrived he went to a summer job somewhere out of the area.

Today we seem to feel that our home is our own private area and we don’t usually want to share it with an outsider.

I think that those who lived through the depression, realize that sometimes others need something they have and are more willing to share with others.

the street $5. The point is to change your focus and do something good for another person. These types of activities can radically change your mood.

• Talk about the good things in life. Even if it feels awkward or even silly, say something positive. Break through the barrier of negativity that you are trapped in. Fake it if you have to, but force yourself to say something positive at least once a day for a week.

You likely will be surprised by the power of your own thoughts and words on your mood.

One of my favorite “Peanuts” cartoons featured Charlie Brown saying “I learned something at school today. I signed up for folk guitar, computer programming, stained glass, art, shoemaking and a natural foods workshop.

“Instead, I got spelling, history, arithmetic and two study periods.”

Charlie’s friend asks, “So what did you learn?”

“I learned that what you sign up for in life, and what you get, are two different things.”

Marcella Marie Briol

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Marcella Briol, 91, Freeport, was held at 11:30 AM on Monday, October 10, 2016 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport.

Fr. Dan Walz officiated and burial followed in the parish cemetery.

Marcella passed away late Wednesday evening at the Pine Villa in Melrose with family at her side.

Marcella was born on July 28, 1925 to Louis and Frances (Wiewel) Ferrian in Sauk Centre. She grew up with seven siblings and graduated from Sauk Centre High School. Marcella joined the US Cadet Nurse Corps at the St. Cloud Hospital School of Nursing. On May 30, 1945, she married John Joseph Briol at Fort George Wright in Spokane, WA and their union welcomed three children. Marcella worked for the US Postal Service for 27 years and retired as Postmaster in 1986. She

She was an active member of Sacred Heart Church in Freeport, the Christian Mothers, and the Catholic Order of Foresters.

Marcella is survived by her children Kathleen (Melvin) Klasen, Melrose; Judith Briol, Freeport; John Briol, Sauk Centre; her sister Agnes Grundmann, Villard; grandchildren Audrey (Marti) Van Beck, Ellen Klasen, Anthony (Julie) Klasen, Michael (Randi) Kalsen, and 10 great-grandchildren; as well as many other family and friends.

She is greeted in Heaven by her husband John Joseph Briol, who passed away October 2, 1972, her parents Louis and Frances Ferrian, her siblings Stella Brees, Leona Hendrix, John Ferrian, Walter Ferrian, Andrew Ferrian, and Cecil Ferrian, and her infant granddaughter Mary Elizabeth Klasen.

Ronald ‘Ron’ W. Eldred

Ronald ‘Ron’ W. Eldred, age 70, longtime businessman, auctioneer and real estate broker in Long Prairie, MN passed away on Sat., Oct. 8, 2016 after a courageous two year battle with cancer.

Memorial services will be held next Monday, Oct. 17 at 11:00 a.m. at the American Lutheran Church in Long Prairie with Reverand Bill Bakewicz officiating. Visitation hours are at the church from 4–8 pm on Sunday evening and also one hour prior to the service.

Ron was born on April 25, 1946 to Robert and Lucille Eldred in Round Prairie, MN. He graduated from Long Prairie High School in 1964. He started Ron Eldred Mobile Homes north of Long Prairie and sold mobile homes until 1970. He moved to Prescott, AZ where he developed and sold Shadow Meadows Subdivision in Chino Valley, AZ. On September 9, 1972 Ron married Darlene (Wald). They lived in AZ until 1976 when they moved back to Long Prairie. Ron got his real estate broker’s license and owned and operated Ron Eldred Realty. He was proud to be an auctioneer for many years working with his father, Bob. Ron and Darlene purchased Fairview Mobile Home Court 38 years ago. Ron has been an inspiration and friend to many renters,

Handle fuel properly. Unused gas left in gas tanks over the winter can go stale and can even damage equipment.

For any equipment stored over the winter, add fuel stabilizer to the gas tank and then run the equipment to distribute it.

Turn the engine off, allow the machine to cool, then restart and run until the gas tank is empty. For winter equipment, be sure to use the appropriate fuel. Most outdoor power equipment was designed, built and warranted to run on 10 percent or less ethanol fuel.

Do a yard cleanup. Clear paths regularly. Make sure there is space in the garage or basement to place larger yard items such as patio furniture, umbrellas and summer toys and games.

He loved to travel. His adventurous spirit made flying his airplanes a passion that he enjoyed for many years. He was always looking for a good deal, buying and selling. Ron was a great conversationalist who made new friends wherever he went.

He had a kind heart and non-judgmental nature. Ron enjoyed watching football games and boxing matches. He was most proud of his family and so loved his wife, children, their spouses, and his grandkids.

He always told Darlene how grateful he was for her loving care the last couple of years.

He is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife of 44 years Darlene Eldred of Browerville; his son and daughter-in-law Grant and Ruthanne Eldred of Clearwater; and his daughter and son-in-law Jill and Mike Peterson of Sartell; four grandchildren, Ian and Elise Eldred of Clearwater, and Addison and Ronni Marie of Sartell; siblings Diane & Jim Cherry, Pam & Gary Schneekloth, Glenda & Jerry Lucas, Chuck & Nancy Eldred all of Long Prairie, Kim and Cheryree Eldred of Louisburg, KS; many nieces and nephews.

Ron is preceded in death by his parents, Robert & Lucille Eldred, and sister Candace Eldred.

Sitting on the Fence -By Sheila Ripplinger Growing up around farmland country, there were plenty of fences to climb over and under and also to sit on. I recall one certain spot along the fencing where there were wooden posts with beams across the top. It was the best place to climb up and sit down and watch the cattle grazing in the pasture. We weren’t suppose to go inside the fencing for obvious reasons, so sitting on the fence was the next best thing! It was also relaxing and carefree to hang out there for awhile in the peace and quiet. It was a safe place up there on that fence!

However, after a short while up there, it did get uncomfortable. Balancing while trying to maintain a position that didn’t cause your legs to start aching did not last long. So it is with life.

We can only balance on that fence of decision making for a short time and then we must make a choice. There is usually a clear right side and a clear wrong side.

We have the freedom to decide which is best. One hint that I have learned in my own life and in observing others around me, is that the wrong side of the fence often appears to be much greener with many more ‘grazing opportunities’ offered. Often there are the ‘no boundaries’ options of doing as you please with the deceptive, hidden fact of terrible consequences.

The wrong side proposes indulgences that are clearly on the outside of God’s will and plan for our lives. That side changes or ‘redefines’ what God has ordained as His best outline for His children. The wrong side exchanges the Truth of God for lies, Romans 1:25. And those who approve and tolerate these depravities are in danger as well, Romans 1:32.

This is not anything new. God gave mankind a beautiful and perfect garden with only one command of ‘do not eat’ of this tree. No fence was installed around this tree- just the free will choice of obeying their God who had given them life and all things to enjoy. The disobedience by Adam and Eve falling into temptation by the enemy brought sin and death in to the world. The enemy - the thief- twisted what God had said just a little bit- and hence the world was changed forever! This enemy is still at work against all that God has created.

He is still twisting God’s Word just as he has always done. I have heard that the most productive and damaging lies are 99% truth. We have the wonderful privilege and responsibility to sort out and seek after what is truth and what is twisted enemy talk. God desires the absolute best for His people, but He will not force us in which way we should go.

He also gives us the freedom to stay sitting and do nothing if that is what we so choose.

This election is an extreme example of getting off the fence. This fence is a dangerous place that many are sitting on. Do they think that they will have a

credible voice when it is over or think they will make some sort of good point?

Those fence sitters that choose not to look at the real deep and moral issues of what is right and true and are choosing to listen to and believe mainstream secular media could be very sorry when it is all said and done. They will not be able to speak up after the election without sounding like a hypocrite. You will only have that logical right to speak up if you indeed went to the polls to cast your vote. If they are thinking that there is a pride in not voting, they are mistaken and deceived.

Nobody can deny that our great Country is in trouble. This is not a surprise to us who have witnessed the down-slide of godlessness that surrounds us as we watch the unholy agendas of the world in which we live. Our political leaders have become more and more corrupt and slander has ruled the media. Other gods are being forced in our government systems and the God of the Bible is being pushed to the side, trampled on, or thrown out completely.

The Holy Bible clearly tells us from cover to cover that if we obey God we will be rewarded and blessed. If we disobey God we will be disciplined and judged.

Each individual human soul will face that same Awesome God of the Bible one day. Whether you believe it or not, it is the Truth. We will give an account for how we lived the life that He gave to us. If we attempt to explain, ‘Lord, I sat on this fence in the middle and played it safe,’ I can assure you that will be the wrong answer to give.

Reality is that God’s Word offends those who reject Him. We must make an honest stand for what is good and right and true. There is no good that comes out of being wishy washy and indecisive. God does not force us to choose sides, but He will guide us and give us discernment and insight if we are a true seeker of Truth.

Yes, you may indeed get stuck with a painful sliver when you slide off the fence, but even if you have to suffer some hurtful consequences that come with standing up for Truth on the right side of that fence, I promise you it will be SO worth it! You will be able to live in the pasture of Freedom in the way that the Good Lord intended!

-Anonymous Dear Anonymous, Certainly there are other investment vehicles that will make much more money than CDs, money markets and savings bonds. However, at your mom’s age people aren’t generally investing for the long haul, unless they’re investing it for their heirs.

If she’s comfortable with her finances, I’d suggest just leaving things alone. Don’t try to force her into something new. At her age she may still have bad memories of the Great Depression and a negative perception of the stock market. In a case like that, mutual funds might make her fearful. I wouldn’t take the chance of robbing a 95-year-old lady of her peace to try and do the “proper” thing with money.

However, if she’s agreeable to the idea of doing a little better with her money, you could start by moving a little into growth stock or balanced stock mutual funds. But do something like this only if the change won’t upset her and leave her fretting over her money. What we want for your mom is financial peace.

-Paul Dear Paul, The cost of the average wedding in America rose to $32,641 last year.

But when it comes to what you can reasonably afford, I think it becomes relative to exactly how much debt you have and what kind of income we’re talking about.

If you have $5,000 in debt but you make $150,000 a year, stop worrying, pay off your debt, and save up for a great wedding. If you make $28,000 a year but you have $30,000 in debt, then you need to have a really minimal wedding. Anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000 would be reasonable in that kind of situation — and even then it’s going to be tight.

The more debt you have in relation to your income, the smaller your wedding expenses should be. A $32,000 wedding would be ridiculous for someone with a $28,000 income. But $28,000 is a below-average income, so you shouldn’t reasonably expect an average wedding in terms of cost. It really all boils down to ratios.

Just remember, Paul, the amount of money spent on the ceremony, reception and all that stuff isn’t what’s important.

It’s the love that two people have for each other that makes the ceremony special and the marriage one that will last a lifetime!

Often we feel crushed with the cares of life. There are times when we dwell on our defeats. We sometimes assume that our grief is so great that it will be with us for a lifetime. We expect to be overwhelmed with the life’s obstacles and even want to hang on to past failures and seem to take pride when life is unfair.

The press conference comes after last week’s announcement that MNsure rates for the 2016-2017 open enrollment period are set to skyrocket by 50-60% or more.

Enrollment caps approved by the Minnesota Department of Commerce will also severely limit choices for Minnesotans shopping for insurance, with 53 counties expected to have just two provider options.

“Minnesotans need real leadership to bring down costs and expand choices in health care,” said House Speaker Kurt Daudt, R-Crown. “Unfortunately, Democrats at the state and federal level have forced through one-sided proposals that have made health costs more expensive rather than more affordable.”

“It’s time for Democrats to stop blocking common-sense proposals to make health care more affordable and give Minnesotans more health care choices,” added House Majority Leader Joyce Peppin, R-Rogers. “Over the past three years, Democrats have obstructed Republican-led bills to bring more accountability to MNsure, lower health care taxes, and increase competition.

Enough is enough.”

Proposals put forward by House Republicans fall into two categories: Lower Costs • Reduce the MNsure tax by half, saving families $22 million over the next three years • Use $35 million in leftover MCHA funds for direct premium relief • Seek waiver or encourage federal government to waive federal tax penalties for buying a non-qualifying plan • End surprise billing to ensure transparency in pricing • Transition Minnesota to the federal exchange, saving millions in overhead costs and improving user experience More Choices • Secure federal waiver to allow eligible Minnesotans to access tax credits off the MNsure exchange • Grant flexibility to the Department

of Commerce by allowing the commissioner to waive the five year waiting period for companies to re-enter the individual market—provided the commissioner decides it’s in the best interest of consumers.

“MNsure and the disastrous impacts of Obamacare are hurting Minnesota families. It’s time to stop throwing good money after bad, get rid of MNsure, and do what we can to give Minnesotans meaningful choices and reduce costs,” said Rep. Matt Dean, R-Dellwood, Chair of the House Health and Human Services Finance Committee.

The MNsure Legislative Oversight Committee, co-chaired by Rep. Greg Davids, R-Preston, is set to meet Wednesday afternoon to discuss MNsure premium rate increases, the status of MNsure’s technology systems, and a preview of open enrollment which is set to begin in November.

“MNsure is causing hassles and headaches for family budgets, but also for counties, Main Street businesses, and countless others,” added Rep. Davids. “From top-to-bottom, this is a failure that is wreaking havoc on Minnesotans everywhere.”

Youth Can Hunt with Mentors for Youth Deer Season Oct. 20-23 Youth, ages 10-15, can participate in a special deer season that runs from Thursday, Oct. 20, to Sunday, Oct. 23, in 27 permit areas of southeastern and northwestern Minnesota, including in the Twin Cities metro permit area 601, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

“Youth can hunt with adult mentors during youth deer season,” said Mike Kurre, DNR mentoring program coordinator. “The season is a way to focus on young hunters so they have good experiences and learn valuable skills. You might be showing youth how to hunt now, but as their interest in the outdoors grows, pretty soon they might be teaching you a lesson or two.”

Deer permit areas open to the hunt are: 101, 105, 111, 114, 201, 203, 208, 209, 256, 257, 260, 263, 264, 267, 268, 338, 339, 341, 342, 343, 344, 345, 346,

347, 348, 349 and 601. Blaze orange requirements apply to all hunters, trappers and adult mentors in areas open for the youth deer season.

Youth must meet all firearms safety requirements, purchase a license and use the appropriate firearm for the permit area in which they are hunting. Youth may take a deer of either sex and may only take one deer during the youth season.

An adult mentor must accompany the youth but may not hunt or carry a firearm and does not need a license.

However, in certain portions of permit areas 346 and 349 in Winona, Houston and Fillmore counties, the adult can participate in the early antlerless hunt while being a mentor if in possession of an early antlerless permit and a regular firearm license.

motivate them to succeed for the team and themselves.

Hit or miss?

When it comes down to it, all goals end up as one or the other. But if you increase your sales by eight percent, rather than the targeted 10 percent, does that make you a failure? Absolutely not!

Even if you missed by two percentage points, the important thing is you had a vision that moved your business forward.

Goals are there to move you forward and push you and your team to achieve things you might not have thought possible. Even if you technically don’t achieve the goal, the process of moving forward was a success.

So make your goals, make sure they all have the five attributes we talked about earlier, and share them with your team. Encourage them to set their own goals too. The property owner on Birch Lake is waiting for paperwork from his attorney. Clerk will send a copy of the lawyer’s fees to date, to be reimbursed by the property owner.

Additional agenda items: Election judges: Ray made the motion to approve the same election judges that served for the primary election. Mike made the second, all in favor, motion approved. A: Annual cycles in deer antlers are related to the changing seasons. Deer have adapted their physiology and behavior to respond to seasonal changes, including antler growth and shedding.

The environmental cue that regulates antler growth is the amount of day length; the physiological cue is the hormone testosterone.

Simply put, the changing day lengths are sensed by the eyes, which send this message through the optic nerve to the pineal gland located at the base of the brain. The declining day length in late fall and early winter causes a decrease in testosterone, which results in antler shedding.

The actual process of antler shedding involves a thin layer of tissue destruction that forms between the antler and the pedicle, called the abscission layer. The degeneration of the bone-tobone bond between the antler and the pedicle is considered to be the fastest deterioration of living tissue known in the animal kingdom.

By House Speaker Kurt Daudt Minnesota is facing a health care crisis. Hundreds of thousands of families will see health insurance costs increase by 50 percent or more next year. Thousands more will lose their plan or access to their doctor through no fault of their own. Greater Minnesota is hit especially hard; 45 counties — all outside the seven county Metro area — will have just two insurers offering health plans.

Irresponsible enrollment caps approved by Governor Dayton’s Department of Commerce mean many Minnesotans will effectively have just one option. This creates difficult choices for Minnesota families: race through a broken MNsure website, spending hours on the phone seeking help from a dysfunctional call center in Illinois, while trying to enroll before one plan meets its cap, or wait and enroll in an uncapped narrow network plan with a 67 percent premium increase.

An even tougher choice: enroll in a plan that will eat up your family’s budget, or go with lesser or no coverage and pay a steep federal penalty – a minimum fine of $2,000 for a family of four.

How did we get here? How is it that the individual and family insurance market, which has withstood decades of changes in healthcare delivery and utilization, stands at the brink of collapse just a few short years after relative financial health?

This mess is a result of MNsure and federal mandates that destroyed states’ ability to design an insurance market that met the needs of its people. This was particularly devastating to Minnesota, which was a national leader in programs to insure low-income and high risk families. Democrats at the state and federal level rammed through MNsure and Obamacare without a single Republican vote.

Governor Dayton began crafting MNsure over five years ago. IT contracts worth millions of dollars were signed without proper vetting, and partisans were put in charge of a massive buildout. Republican concerns were largely ignored – even silenced during legislative debate – when questions were raised about the improbability of vast promises made by Legislative Democrats.

You don’t hear them anymore, but you may remember those promises from 2013: MNsure would be the Travelocity of health insurance, families would save $500 a year, small businesses would save thousands.

It’s important to remember those promises because Democrats’ primary solution to the current crisis is to keep pouring money into MNsure – at least $400,000,000 of taxpayer money to date – raise taxes on healthcare, and add more Minnesotans to public health insurance.

we are only one half of one branch of government, but we pushed for major reforms at MNsure and in the wider marketplace anyway. Over the past two years, we led efforts to eliminate MNsure’s special exemptions from oversight, force improvements in technology and customer service performance, reduce the MNsure Tax that drives up the cost of health insurance, and eliminate ridiculous bonuses for MNsure executives.

While we succeeded in improving oversight of MNsure, too often Legislative Democrats and Governor Dayton chose the status quo over bold reforms.

Republicans also led on creating more health insurance options for the employees of small business – a group that also faces declining choices and rising costs. That measure received broad bipartisan support in the House, but was stymied by the Dayton Administration.

Just as importantly, we worked in a bipartisan manner to eliminate unfair Medical Assistance liens on families and seniors, and passed telemedicine reform to increase access to quality care in rural areas of our state.

House Republicans will continue putting families first as we seek solutions to this crisis.

The top goal must be to lower costs.

Our plan would provide immediate relief by cutting the MNsure Tax by half to save families $22 million over the next three years. Republicans also support using $35 million in leftover funds from a now-defunct health program for direct premium reductions. And passing the tax relief bill unnecessarily vetoed

by Governor Dayton would put money back in the pockets of families that could help defray rising healthcare bills.

Second, Minnesotans need more choices. Republicans believe in giving Minnesotans access to tax credits outside of MNsure. If lowering the uninsured rate is the goal of Obamacare’s, why limit people’s choices only to plans sold on a broken website? Families need options and easier access to federal premium tax credits, and should be allowed to shop wherever is most convenient for them.

Third, we need long-term stability and competition. While options are constrained by the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare, we can employ creative solutions that stabilize the individual market and lower costs either through portable premium assistance for consumers or a reinsurance program similar in purpose to the former Minnesota Comprehensive Health Association.

In order to fix this mess, we need bipartisan solutions for Minnesota’s healthcare system. That means moving past partisan allegiance to the dysfunctional MNsure website, and taking common-sense steps to help residents struggling with rising costs and shrinking choices. Time is short. Families are waiting. Republicans are ready.
