Self-serving leaders vs. servant leaders -By Harvey Mackay

K e n Blanchard believes corporate America is in desperate need of a different leadership role model.

And I couldn’t agree more.

Ken is a walking management encyclopedia: he’s written 50 books with more than 90 contributing authors. His blockbuster book, “The One Minute Manager,” has sold 13 million copies around the world. He has a practical, nononsense style that I love.

Ken has been a good friend for years. In fact, I owe a lot of my book writing success to Ken because he’s the one who asked me to write a book with him before I decided to author “Swim With the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive” back in 1988.

While most leaders think that leadership is in your head, Ken thinks effective leadership starts in the heart. Your heart controls your motivation, your intent and your leadership character.

I invited Ken to speak to my Roundtable group of 30 CEOS. His memorable message was that the number one leadership style around the world today

is “seagull management.” He explained: “Managers might set goals and then disappear until you screw up. Then they fly in, make a lot of noise, dump on everybody and fly out. They think that’s great leadership.”

He compared what he calls selfserving leaders to servant leaders and mentioned three main differences.

The first difference is feedback. If you’ve ever tried to give negative feedback up the hierarchy of a self-serving leadership team, you know the difference. You get destroyed. Self-serving leaders thrive in critical environments, whereas servant leaders prefer supportive environments.

Ken said: “I travel around the world, and I’ll say to people, ‘How do you know whether you’re doing a good job?’

The number one response I still get is, ‘Nobody’s yelled at me lately.’”

He went on to say that if he could only teach one thing it would be to develop great relationships. He advised that to develop great organizations you have to wander around and catch people

doing the right things and then praise them in front of everyone.

The second major difference is that self-serving leaders don’t want anyone else to look really good, while servant leaders really want to build leadership in their group. They have no problem with someone rising up. They don’t mind sharing leadership.

My philosophy is you’d be amazed at how much you can accomplish if you don’t care who gets the credit. I also believe that three opinions are better than two and five are better than four.

Arnold and Mary Jane (Beuning) Blommel were married on October 23, 1962 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in St. Francis.

Harvey Mackay continued from page 2 ion of others,” Ken said. “They have this score-keeping system. The only way they can keep going is they’ve got to get more. Their score-keeping centers around three things: accumulation of wealth, recognition/power and status.”

Ken advises that there is nothing wrong with accumulating money, getting recognized, or having some power and status. “What’s wrong is if that’s who you think you are, because then your self-worth is tied up there, and you’re going to have to keep on performing,” he said. “That’s why people have to keep on accumulating more and more and take huge bonuses when that money could be spent in other ways.”

Servant leaders define their selfworth differently. They are comfortable in their skin. Ken cautions that this doesn’t mean that they don’t have some weaknesses. They know that their position is not a given. Everything from their job and possessions are on loan and can be taken away at a moment’s notice.

Our egos can interfere in two ways, Ken cautions. One is false pride, when you think more of yourself than you should and your main job is to promote yourself. The other is self-doubt or fear, when you think less of yourself than you should.

The antidote for fear and self-doubt

is self-pride and self-esteem, whereas the antidote for false pride is humility, which Ken believes is another important characteristic of a leader.

“A lot of people have this image that people who are humble are weak,” Ken said. “People with humility don’t think less of themselves, they just think about themselves less. That’s really a powerful thing.”

Robert and Mayme (Tschida) Schmitz. He farmed all his life on the family farm near Rooney Lake. He enjoyed fishing, building things, driving tractor and spending time with his nephews and niece.

John was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis Survivors include his sister and brothers, Irene “Reno” Schmitz, LeRoy Schmitz, Gilbert Schmitz and Isidore (Beverly) Schmitz all of Freeport; nephews and niece, Robin (Carrie) Schmitz of Freeport, Andrew Schmitz of Maple Grove and Kelly Schmitz of Freeport.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mayme Schmitz.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

John L. Schmitz, age 61, of rural St. Francis, died Friday, October 5, 2012 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m.

Monday, October 8 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis with Rev. John Odero officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Joseph “Joe” Cichon Joseph “Joe” Cichon, 39 year old resident of New Ulm, MN formerly of Swanville, MN died Thursday in New Ulm, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, October 12 at 11:00 A.M. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Swanville, MN with Father Ron Dockendorf officiating.

Burial will be in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Cemetery in Little Falls, MN. Friends may gather from 4:00-8:00 P.M. on Thursday at the Emblom-Brenny Funeral Service in Little Falls, MN and from 10:0011:00 A.M. on Friday at the church in Swanville, MN. Joseph Steven Cichon was born June 18, 1973 in Little Falls, MN to the late Jerome “Jerry” and Mary Ann (Bienek) Cichon. He grew up in Swanville, MN and graduated from Swanville High School with the class of 1991. After high school he attended Alexandria Vo-Tech. Joseph lived in various cities through out Minnesota.

He worked as retail manager with Thrifty White Drug, Walgreen’s, Snyder Drug and Advanced Auto Parts. Most recently he lived in New Ulm, MN where, he owned and operated the Sears store from 2004 until 2007. Joe was currently working at Aschenbrenner Trucking and at the Pub and Patio. He took care of his father Jerry, during his illness and was at his side when he died.

Joe will be remembered as a Renaissance man with a big heart and positive attitude.

He was very outgoing and would engage in conversation with everyone he met. He was active with dart leagues and enjoyed a good game of pool with friends. Joe enjoyed deer hunting, football, baseball, golf, pinball and brewing his own beverages. He treasured his time spent with family and friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Aevaleen; siblings, Kathy (Brian) Burgardt of Little Falls, Jim (Shannon) Cichon of Swanville, David Cichon of Little Falls and Roger Cichon of Swanville; nieces and nephews, Kayla (Craig) Bohnsack, John Cichon, Dani and Niki Cichon and great-nieces, Addison and Emma Bohnsack; He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerome “Jerry” and Mary Ann (Bienek) Cichon.

A celebration of life was held Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012 at River of Life Church in Cold Spring for Marian A. Theimer, age 91, who passed away Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at her home. Pastor Denny Curran officiated and burial will be at St. Marcus Cemetery, Clear Lake at a later date.

Marian was born July 25, 1921 in Mora to Raymond & Cassie (Lockard) Dalbey.

She married Richard Theimer on Nov. 25, 1944 in Minneapolis. They lived in Minneapolis and Richfield before moving to Briggs Lake near Clear Lake where they resided for 28 years. They moved to Avon in 2000. Marian was a homemaker and also worked at AT&T Telephone Co.,

enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters, family and friends. He was always proud of his grandchildren. Virgil had a nine-year courageous battle with cancer. Throughout those trying years, he maintained a positive attitude that the doctors said gave him strength and they were amazed how far it took him.

Virgil is survived by his children Keith Jacobs (Dawn Schmits), Paynesville; Kimmy (Dave) Dahl, Anoka; Stephanie Jacobs (Curtis Fischer), Paynesville; Nancy (David) Stalboerger, Spring Hill; Cindy Jacobs (Chas Stuns), Sartell; Ronald Jacobs (Teriana Bense), Upsala; grandchildren Dylan Gertkin, Andrue, Mathew, and Henry Stalboerger, Arrianna and Brianna Merritt, David Dahl, Hunter Stueck, Aiden Brannon, Holly Jacobs; brothers Vernon (Mary) Jacobs, Melrose; Jerry (Mary) Jacobs, Elmdale; sisters Marion Kurtz, Albany; Carol Ann Ritter, Long Prairie; and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Veronica Jacobs, sisters Lillian VanHeel/Velcamp, Delores Roerick, Darlene Ahrens; infant brother Laverne Jacobs; and nephew Leo Jacobs.

She enjoyed baking, cooking, crossword puzzles and beating everyone she played at scrabble. More than anything she enjoyed being with her family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughters, Sharon (Randy) Rousseau of Olathe, KS, Pamela Theimer of Little Falls, Sandra (Greg) Terwey of St. Augusta, Shelley Hansen of Kansas City, MO, and Robin (Jim) Hentges of Avon; grandchildren, Jim, Tammy, Vicky, Shannon, Chad, Neil, Emily, Mark, Kami, Troy, Tracy, Tony, Sara, Nicole, Michael, Nathan, Jeremiah, Derek, Dani, and Jacqui; 33 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Winnie Dalbey of New Port, OR. A Celebration of Life for Virgil A. Jacobs, age 60, of Burtrum, was held at 11:00 AM Monday, October 8, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala. Fr. Ron Dockendorf officiated and private burial will take place at a later date. Virgil passed away peacefully at his home in God’s country surrounded by his loving family.

Virgil was born October 8, 1951 in Melrose to Edward and Veronica (Stueve) Jacobs. He graduated from Upsala High School in 1969. He married Lois Sobania on June 28, 1980 in Opole. During their first few years of marriage, they lived in Sartell before moving to Upsala. Virgil worked in construction for most of his life while farming. In his later years, he was a welder, most recently at Polar Tank in Opole. Virgil enjoyed fishing in his free time, smoking his pipe, and riding his motorcycle. In the summer he enjoyed planting his garden and tending his houseplants. He often joked about his “green thumb” as he smiled. He

Edward J. “Ed” Frieler Edward J. “Ed” Frieler, age 94 of Melrose, died Thursday, October 4, 2012 at the Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, October 13 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Ken Thielman officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friday and 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Parish prayers will be held at 5 p.m. followed by the Sts. Bernard & Elizabeth Council at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Edward John Frieler was born August 6, 1918 in Grenora, North Dakota to George and Mary (Wenker) Frieler. On May 22, 1946 he married Loretta Mueller at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. The couple farmed near Spring Hill for over 40 years until building

their home in Melrose in 1982. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and Sts. Bernard & Elizabeth Council. Ed enjoyed fishing, playing accordion, and playing cards.

Survivors include his children, Jan (Harold) Goebel of Albany, Allen (Judy) Frieler of Sauk Rapids, Jim (Kathy Meehan) Frieler of Belgrade, and Cheryl (Lee) Person of Paynesville; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; brothers and sister, Vernon (Aggie) Frieler of Grey Eagle, Duane (Rita) Frieler of Elrosa, and Doris (Ervin) Goebel of St. Joseph; and sisters-in-law, Hildegard Frieler of Sauk Centre, Eileen Frieler of Annandale, and Rita Frieler of Melrose.

Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta Frieler on September 25, 2011; parents; son, Harold Frieler; infant son, Alvin Frieler; an infant sister; and brothers, Norbert Frieler, Lawrence Frieler, Lloyd Frieler, Francis “Fritz” Frieler and Al Frieler.

Leonard John Rademacher was born in New Munich on September 5, 1943 to Virgil and Theresa (Zierden) Rademacher.

He was raised in New Munich and spent his entire life in the central Minnesota area. Lenny married Dianne Groetsch on February 15, 1969 and together they raised four children. He worked many jobs and spent 28 years with Versa Paper Mill as a lab technician before retiring in 2009.

Lenny loved to garden, especially his roses, which were a special gift when he gave them to any of his ten grandchildren.

Lenny belongs to the Catholic Order of Foresters and the United Paperworkers Union. He was also a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

Lenny is survived by his wife of 43 years, Dianne; his children Lisa (Ranji) Lachmansingh, Sauk Rapids; Michael (Therese) Rademacher, Askøy, Norway; Rachel (Dan) Smoot, Cottage Grove; and Heidi Rademacher, Sauk Rapids; his siblings Richard (Karen) Rademacher, New Munich; Harold (Joan) Rademacher, Greenwald; Eugene (Betty) Rademacher, Melrose; Bernice (Ron) Olmscheid, Regal; Joyce Yarke, St. Cloud; Norman Rademacher, New Munich; Chuck Rademacher (Nancy Oehrlein), Cold Spring; Debbie (Phillip) Schmeising, Paynesville; his ten grandchildren Abigail, Adan, Jaidev, William, Markus, Matias, Emmet, Nevaeh, Anika, Liam; and many family friends.

Memorial service set for miscarried babies A burial service for babies that were miscarried from May through September 2012 will take place at 4:00 p.m., October 18 at Calvary Cemetery in St. Cloud. For one project, each student had to participate and experiment with different ways on how to find the properties of his or her rock. Jerome has been very active in his community as well. He is a life-long member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in North Prairie, has spent many years as a member of the Morrison County Mounted Possie, was a 4-H Shooting Sports Leader and a Gun Safety Instructor.

We would like to invite everyone to join us for any or all of the day’s activities in supporting Jerome and his family.

Swanville Junior High Student of the Month Swanville Junior/Senior High School is proud to announce Rachel Evans as the September Student of the Month for 7 - 9th grades.

Rachel is a ninth grade student.

She is the daughter of Paul and Carol Evans.

Rachel stays very active both in and out of school.

Her hobbies include playing volleyball, babysitting, four-wheeling and being with friends. Rachel has been in volleyball 7th through 9th grades, softball for two years, JO Volleyball for the past two years and played basketball in sixth grade. Rachel also has participated in band since fifth grade. She is also newly elected to Student Council as Fresh-

man Class President. Rachel is active with volunteering with her church also.

Rachel was selected as a Student of the Month during the 2011-2012 school year.

Her future plans include working with kids that have special needs. Her advice for fellow students is that “Hard work pays off!”

Mr. Bzdok, Social Studies teacher along with Mrs. Bzdok, Science teacher both comment, “Rachel is a wonderful person to have in class. She comes into class every day with a smile on her face and a positive attitude. She is a very mature young lady who never complains, or makes excuses when things do not go as planned. Rachel is well liked by her classmates, is kind to everyone she meets, and works hard in the classroom.

Rachel is the type of student who will make the right decisions in life, and is sure to put a smile on everyone’s face.

Gruber pledged 10 months to National Service

Kateri Gruber of Melrose, Minnesota, is one of 160 men and women who pledged to perform 10 months of national service as part of the Atlantic Region’s Class XVIII of the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), an AmeriCorps program.

As a Corps Member, Gruber has spent nearly 10 months getting things done for America to strengthen communities and develop her leadership abilities.

Gruber and her team have worked on a variety of projects including Habitat for Humanity in Bath, Maine where the team

weatherized old drafty homes; PhillyRising with the Mayor’s Office of Civic Engagement in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to revitalize neighborhoods by cleaning alleyways and clearing abandoned lots, and by helping construct and maintain community gardens; and the Department of Environmental Conservation Albany in Newcomb, New York to build and reclaim trails, maintain historical sites, and much more. Gruber also had the opportunity to work in disaster operations while deployed for 12 days to Hattiesburg, Mississippi after Hurricane Isaac. Gruber and her team are currently working on their last service project at Habitat for Humanity of Newburgh, New York building homes for low-income families.

Crop yields strong despite dry conditions With harvest winding down over most parts of the district, yields, for the most part, have been a pleasant surprise.

Both corn and soybean fields have been producing crops that are average or a bit above. Especially on heavy soil, where the moisture we did receive lasted longer, yields did very well.

What amazed me the most was the overall quality of the crop. In all my years of farming, I have never hauled corn out of the field at moisture levels

of 12 to 14 percent, which was common this year. That means the crop can go directly into the bin or elevator without artificial drying, which saves both time and money. The weight of the crop was also above average, with some reporting corn test weights of 60 pounds per bushel or even higher.

The weather also cooperated by remaining dry all through September, with no rain delays to speak of. The continuing drought does raise concerns for next year, however. It also makes fall plowing or other tillage difficult, if not impossible. The ground is so hard that the tips or points of chisel plows, for example, have difficulty in penetrating the soil surface.

In cases where the tillage equipment is able to work the ground, those tips or tillage points get extremely hot because of friction and wear down quickly. Putting a new set of them on the machine is an expensive proposition, and could cost a thousand dollars or more, depending on how large the machine is and how many tips is has.

In addition, many of our recent hot days have had little or no wind, so the dust just hangs in the air. This has caused some beautiful red sunsets, but it’s difficult working in those conditions. I watched a worker unloading soybeans at an area elevator, and the dust coming out the bottom of the trailer was like a thick fog.

Jacob comes from a long line of firefighters, with his grandfather, Loren, having 42 years of service under his belt and still being active in the department, serving as assistant chief. In addition, his dad and uncles also serve with the department.

Local Municipality Minutes Community Builders September 27, 2012 Mission Statement: Area Businesses coming together to support growth and community involvement while maintaining a safe secure environment.

Present: Mark Larson (GE/ Burtrum Lions), Dennis & Diane Kramer (Eagle’s Crossing), Theresa Pansch (Village Café), Shelly Primus (CMCU), & Jill Kurowski (Style N Go) Meeting called to order at 6:00 p.m. at the Village Cafe.

Treasurer’s Report read and approved by Theresa and Shelly.

Old Business: Gem Fest: Was successful! Six vendors participated in the Farmer’s Market, CB Float was pulled in parade, National Night Out Flyers were handed out during parade to advertise upcoming event. There was a bouncy house and tractor pull on Sunday in which we have approximately 60+ children attend. Snacks were also served (popcorn, water, & pop).

National Night Out: Was held August 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Lion’s Park. The Community Choir sang, Grey Eagle Fire trucks were available; Deputy Sheriff John Decock with the Canine, and Police Chief Kevin Langer gave a speech. Diane announced that the donations collected tonight would go to these speakers. There were about 150 people that attended this event we served root beer floats and popcorn.

We went through 9 2-liters and 8 pictures of pop with 6 pails of ice cream. It was a successful night.

Donations were given as follows: Sheriff $75.00, Long Prairie Police $75.00, Community Choir $50.00 and The Grey Eagle Fire Department $50.00.

Promote Business: A questionnaire was sent out to all of the 2012 Gold Member of Community Builders to feature them in a half page article in the Hometown News. Only three were returned. Questionnaires were then sent to the 2012 Silver members of Community Builders.

We are still awaiting replies from most of these members. Community Builders are also looking for available writers to assisting in composing these articles. If you are interested or know someone who

New Business: Halloween: Community Builders will be hosting a trick or treat evening on Main Street on Wednesday, October 31st from 5 - 7:00 p.m. Any businesses interested in participating, please contact Jill at 320-285-7780 to be put on list. Road and Bridge Report: John began his report by saying that work was completed on 130th and 321st. Ascot portion is completed as well as 140th. Signs have been put up and a thank you was received from the resident who requested the school bus sign. John will look into a new recording device for the township; supervisors agreed we need to continue recording meetings. John has been doing before and after pictures of the township road projects. John will work on township policy for brushing and road work. Some blading was done as requested by residents. Discussion on 335th, supervisors felt it didn’t turn out as well as 130th W. Additional agenda items: None.

Bruce Fahlen of Baxter reported a burglary at his hunting residence at the address of 34835 180th Street in Swanville. It is believed that the break in occurred between Tuesday, Oct. 2 and Friday, Oct. 5. Various pieces of hunting equipment were taken from inside the residence. Minnesota Housing lowers interest rates on First-Time Homebuyer Loans to 2.75%

Fixed-Rate for a 30-Year Mortgage Is Lowest in Agency History Minnesota Housing lowered its interest rate today on a 30-year fixed rate mortgage to 2.75%. This rate is the lowest rate offered in the agency’s history and is currently lower than any other comparable housing finance agency loans in the country.

“Being able to offer a rate of 2.75% can make the difference between renting and the ability to buy a home,” said Mary Tingerthal, Commissioner of Minnesota Housing. “For those who have been thinking about taking advantage of low house prices, there is no better time to buy.”

Minnesota Housing offers mortgage loans through lender partners across the state for qualified low- and moderate-

income first-time homebuyers in Minnesota. The agency also offers other loan programs with interest-free loans to help with down payment and closing costs for eligible borrowers.

The average rent for a two-bedroom apartment in the metro area is currently $1,030 according to Marquette Advisors Apartment TRENDS. In comparison, the total monthly payment on an average home (two/ three-bedroom) with a sale price of $178,000 would range from $1,075 to $1,168 depending on loan product.

Buddy

An out-of-towner drove his car into a ditch in a desolated area. Luckily, a local farmer came to help with his big strong horse, named Buddy. He hitched Buddy up to the car and yelled, “Pull, Nellie, pull!” Buddy didn’t move.

Then the farmer hollered, “Pull, Buster, pull!” Buddy didn’t respond.

Once more the farmer commanded, “Pull, Coco, pull!”

Nothing.

Then the farmer nonchalantly said, “Pull, Buddy, pull!” And the horse easily dragged the car out of the ditch.

The motorist was most appreciative

and very curious. He asked the farmer why he called his horse by the wrong name three times.

The farmer said, “Oh, Buddy is blind and if he thought he was the only one pulling, he wouldn’t even try.”
