“Oh, yes,” the dealer said placidly, “many have mentioned it. But whenever they drop in to tell me, they always buy something.”

Intentional spelling errors in advertising are nothing new. Snickers is one of my favorite candy bars (when my wife lets me have one), and I remember when they ran ads featuring spelling errors. One ad read: “Oh Deer Its Hard To Spel When Your Hungry. If you keap making typing mistakes grab yourself a Snickers fast.” Then they pictured a candy bar that read “Snikkers.”

The salesman in me pays attention to creative sales ideas that make customers take notice. I’m sharing some of my favorites.

Personalize things. It only makes sense for stores to offer this service for customers that want products personalized, from towels to basketball shoes.

Break a record. Mike Lindell, of My Pillow fame, handed out pillows at a sporting event and had the world’s largest pillow fight.

Establish new experiences for customers. Sports teams have really capitalized on this, as they give their season ticketholders and fans experiences – a meet and greet, chance to watch practice or take batting practice.

In a competitive sports market, these experiences are invaluable.

Use Props. There is no better example of salespeople using props than state fairs. I’m mesmerized by product pitchers demonstrating knives, cookware, cleaners, toys or some product that you can’t live without. Always remember: a mediocre salesperson tells.

A good salesperson explains. A superior

salesperson demonstrates.

Catchy and ubiquitous ads.

Advertising is everywhere. From bathrooms stalls to shopping carts, ads all over every website, it needs to be memorable to be effective. Example: an ad for a handyman that read, “I can fix anything your husband can. And I’ll do it NOW.” Another similar ad read, “I can fix anything that your husband breaks.”

Contests have been around forever.

The crazier the better. The more attention they attract the better.

Sell benefits, not features. Don’t sell me books; sell me knowledge.

Don’t sell me insurance; sell me peace of mind. Don’t sell me clothes; sell me style, attractiveness and a sharper image. Don’t sell me a computer; sell me the time I will save.

Have a unique calling card. My friend, the late Victor Kiam, told me about one of the greatest salesmen he ever knew. John Henry James was a tall and imposing man who made his sales calls in a chauffeur-driven limousine.

At each stop, the chauffeur would jump out of the car and announce, “Ladies Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Additions Sometimes my readers will have “additions or corrections” to one of my stories.

The common comment refers to their personal experience which was more revealing or exciting than my story.

M a n y individuals remember spending time in the hay-barn spreading the loose hay during haying time, while the outdoors temperature was over 100 degrees. They spoke about the heat created by the newly harvested hay coupled with the heat from the hay harvested in the previous few days, which was going through it’s curing

process. The dust and bugs made the experience more memorable.

Kids were usually chosen for this job. This may have been their introduction to the haying process. They were usually just a little bit young to effectively move the heavy hay, but it was also a way to keep younger kids busy at a job which had a somewhat lower possibility of injury. It also gave them a story with which to impress their Grand or Great Grandchildren. It may have been retold several times, each time it may have been a little more hot and a lot more work.

Another comment somewhat related to making hay, was about the dump rake.

As was said, it was designed as a horse drawn machine, which was converted to tractor use. The second kick of the dump rake was rather common. After experiencing the slam of the rake teeth on the bottom of the operators bottom,

and gentlemen, Mr. John Henry James has arrived!” James would enter with his sample case and say, “I do believe we’re going to do some business today.”

And he was right.

Likeability. To be successful at selling, it’s important that customers like you. People do business with people they feel comfortable with. Movie star Burt Reynolds said that the reason why some actors become successful in movies is that the camera likes them.

Reynolds said that every day he worked in front of a camera, he started the day off going up to the camera and saying, “I love you. Like me today. Please, like me today.” We need to remember that customers are like a camera. Make the buyer like you.

One thing no business has: too many customers. They don’t magically appear, and they need motivation to stay and keep coming back. Whether you have everyday customers, once-a-year customers, in person or online, browsers or buyers, they need to feel special.

Joe, a small-town barber, knew his clients’ preferences after decades of service and he always charged his clients fairly. A national-chain hair salon opened just across the street. It had shiny new fixtures, neon signs, young and attractive personnel AND they were offering haircuts for $10.

Joe watched as traffic poured into the new competitor and wondered how he was going to compete with that.

Should he put up a sign – “Haircuts $9.99”? What to do?

After some thought and reflection on his business, Joe posted a large sign outside of his shop: “We fix $10 haircuts.” He pointed the sign directly

at his competitor’s front door.

It didn’t take long for Joe’s clients to come back.

his father developed a rope and pulley system which allowed the tractor operator to trip the rake from the tractor seat.

Another story was told about a mixup with garden vegetables. An aged Grandfather planted his garden with zucchini and gourds in adjacent rows.

The produce was given to his daughterin-law to make zucchini hot dish. She thought the color of the zucchini was a little different, but thought maybe it was a new variety. After all, after over half a century of gardening the old fellow should know what he was doing. The daughter-in-law made her special recipe hot-dish using soups, onions and special seasonings. The family sat down to eat and the response was,”what is this?” It tasted awful. As you may have already determined, the older fellow supplied gourds by mistake. A family story that will be retold for years to come.

Recently, we attended the Burtrum Bean Bake. This gathering includes beans which are baked underground the way they were made in early times.

There were many different foods offered.

My favorite was chicken in homemade noodles, spooned over mashed potatoes.

One food which I only took a small sample of was rutabaga. This food has a rather strong earthy taste when cooked,

which when added to beef soups is good, but when simply boiled, it has a strong taste, which requires an acquired taste.

When it is sliced, salted and eaten raw, it is really good. My Grandmother would sometimes make baggi soup, which was a good broth with cooked, mashed up rutabaga added. It was similar to pea soup, but pea soup is better. I guess everyone has their favorites.

In my youth, I enjoyed going to the sweet-corn patch and eating the corn raw in the field. I bet there were others who did this too, and maybe they are still doing it.

Our garden grows peas along a fence surrounding the garden. Our dog usually eats any peas reaching through the fence. She chooses pods that have fully developed peas in them. Dogs are much smarter than we realize.

Obituaries Joyce Ebnet

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Joyce Ebnet, age 58 of Holdingford, will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, October 10 at the Church of All Saints, St. Mary in Holdingford.

Burial will be in the St. Hedwig’s parish cemetery.

Joyce died Sunday after a long battle with cancer. There will be a visitation after 9:30 AM, Thursday at the church in Holdingford.

Joyce was born December 24, 1960 in St. Cloud to Peter and Betty (Schmitt) Gaida. She spent the first few years living in St. Cloud and then the family moved to Holdingford, where Joyce spent the rest of her life. She married Neil Ebnet on February 29, 1992 in Holdingford. Joyce worked

at several jobs over the years, including Fingerhut, bartending, working as a nursing assistant at several nursing homes, but most of all, she was a homemaker taking care of her husband and children. She enjoyed cooking, especially chocolate chip cookies.

She always made sure everyone was well fed and had their favorite snacks and beverages.

She loved spending time at the cabin with her family, playing games or sitting around the campfire. She was a member of the Church of All Saints, St. Mary Catholic Church and she was a life member of the Sauk Rapids American Legion Auxiliary.

Joyce is survived by her husband, Neil, Holdingford; her daughters, Stephanie (Curt) Derichs, Otsego; Cassie (Bryan) Novak, St. Cloud; Kayla (Mark) Solorz, St. Joseph; her mother, Betty Gaida, Holdingford; her brothers, Bill Gaida, Sartell; Dave Gaida, Holdingford and 4 grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her father, Peter Gaida, in March of 2010.

Arrangements were with Miller-Carlin Funeral Home, Holdingford.

to live and raise their family. He was an avid sportsman and active member of his community.

Gene is survived by his wife, Virginia, his thirteen children, Ann (Gary) Fichtinger, Dan Ohmann, Steve (Barb) Ohmann, Janet (Ken) Studer, Jim/Gumby Ohmann, Sue (Rick) Thomes, Diane Ohmann, Lucy Maus, Nick (Charlene) Ohmann, Ruth (Chris) Laumb, Mary (Mark) Braun, Amy (Morgan) Hull, Charlie Ohmann; 31 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his sister, Mary Hancock.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Don, Richard, Bob, and Joe; and son-in-law, Jon Maus.

Private burial will take place on a later date at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, MN.

E u g e n e Charles Ohmann, age 88, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by family, on October 1, 2019. Mass of Christian burial will take place on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany, MN with visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Gene was born in Albany, MN on August 19, 1931 to Nick and Lucy (Dinndorf) Ohmann. He married Virginia Viehauser on July 4, 1952. He joined the U.S. Air Force, and after his service, returned to Albany

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM, Thursday on October 10, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Grey Eagle for Margaret M. Hinman, age 91, of Grey Eagle who passed away at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany.

Rev. Ronald Dockendorf will officiate and burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be at the church two hours prior to the service on Thursday. Arrangements have been entrusted to Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, Stein Chapel in Long Prairie.

Margaret was born on February 19, 1928 to Andrew and Josephine (Berscheit) Dolence in Grey Eagle. She married Keith Hinman on October 8, 1946 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. Together they owned and operated Hinman’s Produce then Hinman’s Grocery. Margaret also worked for the United States Postal Service for 25 years. Margaret was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and was a member

R u t h Shodeen 77 year old resident of Upsala, MN died Tuesday, October 1 at Fairview S o u t h d a l e Hospital in Edina, MN. She was reunited with her loving husband, Ronald and dear son, Keith. A Memorial Mass was held on Tuesday, October 8 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala, MN. Ruth Marie (Verkennis) Shodeen was born on April 1, 1942 to Leonard and Paula (Pogatschnik) Verkennis. She graduated from Upsala High School with the class of 1960. She attended North Hennepin Community College where she received her Associates Degree in Accounting. Ruth was married to Ronald Shodeen on October 14, 1961 at St. Francis Catholic Church.

They lived in Minneapolis before moving to Maple Grove in 1969. Ruth worked as an Activities Aid at the Travilla of Golden Valley. The couple moved to Upsala in 2003 to enjoy their retirement. They spent many years wintering in Lake Havu, Arizona.

Ruth loved to attend bible study, sing with the church choir, play bridge and gardening.

She especially enjoyed spending time at the family cabin on Pine Lake in Upsala, MN. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory is her son, Matthew Shodeen; daughters, Jeanne Olerud and Amy (Christopher) Branca; grandchildren, Benjamin Olerud, Katie Olerud, Chelsea Shodeen, Nick (Kristen) Shodeen and Chad Shodeen; greatgrandchildren, Sawyer Olerud and Claire Shodeen; sisters, Josephine (Norbert) Roering, Margaret Naas and Miriam (Gilbert) Stalnick.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Ronald, son, Keith Shodeen; sister, Laura Lyons and a brother, Mark Verkennis.

Margaret was a cancer survivor. Her strong faith allowed her to persevere through many physical trials.

Margaret is survived by her sons, David (Elaine) of St. Cloud, John (Kathy) of Grey Eagle, Mike of St. Petersburg, FL, Bill (Amy) of Grey Eagle, Jerry (Cindy) of Lino Lakes; sister, Joan Rohde of Burtrum; grandchildren, Kelly (Charlie) Kirks, Ryan (Mikaila) Hinman, Andrew Hinman and fiance, Jocelyn Schwartz, Brett Hinman and fiance, Celeste Heurer, McKenzie (Chad) Hansen, Joe Hinman, Missy (Doug) Becker, Riley (Megan) Hinman, Nicole (Ben) Blomgren, Allie (Jake) Bohlman; and 12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Keith; brothers, Robert, Andrew, Paul and Joe Dolence; sisters, Katherine Woodman, Dolores Roering, Teresa Sobota, and multiple in-laws.

Margaret Rose Yunik Services celebrating the life of Margaret Rose Yunik, age 102 of Albany, will be 11:00 am Friday, October 11th at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. There will be a visitation 10:00 am Friday prior to the service at church, burial will be in the

parish cemetery.

Margaret Rose Yunik was born September 26th, 1916 in Albany, Minnesota to Fred and Frances (Birr) Christen.

Margaret was born and raised in Albany where she lived most of her life. In her younger years she served as a governess and lived in several states yet Albany was always her home. She married Ervin Yunik

January 28th, 1950 in Albany, at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church where she was an active and devoted member. She was a homemaker and took pride in taking care of her home and children. The couple owned and operated the NU Way Cleaners in Albany for over 30 years.

Margaret enjoyed reading, painting, quilting, puzzle’s and playing cards, but most of all she enjoyed praying and taking care of her family and grandchildren.

She will be remembered as a very loving, positive and outgoing person who loved people and would help anyone, in any way she could.

Margaret is survived by her daughters, Roslyn Yunik, New London; Anne (Kevin) Klem, Elk River; Jane (Dave) Plantenberg, St. Joseph; Sarah (Bob) Laskowski, Forreston; her grandchildren and great -grandchildren. Margaret is preceded in death by her parents, husband Ervin, sister’s Loretta Christen and Marion Mahoney.

Crash with Injuries: Kelly Lanners, 32, of Albany, was driving a white 2017 Toyota Corolla northbound on County Road 2 when she came upon a dead deer in the roadway. She swerved to miss it and drove into the east ditch striking a sign.

Lanners’ two young sons were passengers in the rear seat and were not injured. They were using their seat belts and child restraint seats.

Lanners, who was also wearing her seat belt, was transported by Mayo Ambulance to St. Cloud Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The vehicle was towed from the scene and the deer was removed from the roadway. St. Joseph Fire and Rescue assisted.

my “original home” brought back many memories that flooded my heart. There were tears of joy mixed with tears of sadness as I thought of my family.

As we returned to the car, I began to think of the many different “homes” I’d lived in since my parents died. The final number was rather staggering but not unusual for most people. A recent census study revealed that the average American will live in 11.7 different “homes.”

Psalm 90 begins with the word “Lord” referring to our God as a sovereign God who is our eternal shelter - our dwelling place. Moses used the same words in Deuteronomy when he wrote, “the eternal God is your dwelling place.” He told the Israelites that God was then and would always be their “home” - their refuge no matter where they were - whether in the wilderness or in the promised land. Home is not a place but a Person.

This same Lord is the eternal God who will become the eternal shelter and refuge for all who accept His Son.

Dear Motor Medics, My vehicle’s heater has been losing its ability to heat gradually over the past few years and it has reached the point of almost no heat and my wife says it’s time to get it fixed or else. She’s steamed and I’m freezing.

I had it flushed a couple times and it seemed to work better for a short time but when I had it done this year it made no difference. The vehicle is a 2001 Dodge Caravan. Can you help me cool down my wife and heat up the van?

-Terry in Sioux Falls, South Dakota Dear Terry, Your problem is most common when the cooling system has not been flushed according to scheduled service times, but if it has been, they may have not serviced the core. When we flush a cooling system, we flush everything, not just the radiator. We remove the hoses to the core and rinse them with clean water and then connect our machine and completely flush the system. We also use a cleaner in the system before we flush it. These simple things can mean the difference between a heater core that goes the distance or one that fails prematurely. If your core has become so clogged that it can’t be flushed enough to give proper heat, then it will need to be replaced. Replacement can be very expensive so if it is determined that a new core is needed check around for prices.

it took a week longer than promised and after five days it developed an oil leak. I have a warranty and they did reimburse me for some rental car charges but have not gone back for repairs because I’m so frustrated with the problems. My wife says I should have them fix it since we paid the money. Then go elsewhere.

I can tell you that any business has a main objective of keeping happy customers. We don’t always hit our mark in our shop, but we try, and we make it right no matter what. Often a major job has unforeseen parts needs that can take an extra week or more. It’s just unavoidable in rare cases. They did reimburse you for rental charges and that was not required. As for the leak I’m sure they don’t like it any more than you and it was not there when it left their shop. It’s the nature of mechanical things. If this shop knows your vehicle well and is honest it’s smart for you to stick with them. If you don’t go back, they can’t help you. Call them.

Grey Eagle City Special Meeting August 8, 2019 The special meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joseph Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 8th day of August 2019 in council chambers. Council members present were Thom Muellner and Bill Pohlmann. Council members absent were Roland Ahrendt and Brian Hollenkamp.

Also in attendance was Clerk Lori Hellmann.

The council was presented with the Final Plat of Grey Eagle Lift Station 1. The plat has been signed by surveyor Juergen Brunkhorst from Widseth Smith Nolting, the County Surveyor and John Walburn as attorney – in-fact for Harriet Walburn and is ready for council review and approval.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the Final Plat of Grey Eagle Lift Station 1 as presented. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Council Member Brian Hollenkamp was absent. Also in attendance were Chico Hellmann, Lori Hellmann and guests Lori Loscheider, Sheriff Steve Och, Nancy Bitz, Dan Berscheid, Romie Gessell, Pastor Mike Bitz, Beth Gessell, Wes David and Kevin Bitz.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Bill Pohlmann and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Matthew and Lori Loscheider submitted a building permit application to install a 13’ x 20’ temporary storage shed

on the south side of the home.

Since the property is owned

by Larry and Pat Kerzman, the Loscheider’s submitted written approval from the Kerzman’s to allow the installation on the property. A motion was made

by Bill Pohlmann to approve the building permit application for the temporary storage shed and abiding by all setback requirements. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Romie and Beth Gessell were in attendance to inform the council that they were interested in selling a portion of their property that runs along State Highway 287, which includes the existing driveway and small shed in line with the Dollar General property. This sale would include approximately 1.75 acres.

Wes David, the potential owner of the property discussed what his intentions were regarding the use of the property. Water and sewer connections would need to be reinstalled at property owner’s expense.

Sheriff Steve Och was in attendance to discuss the policing contract that the City has with the Todd County Sheriff’s Department. Currently the city pays $35 per hour for a total of 44 hours per month. The Sheriff’s Department is requesting an increase in the rate from $35 per hour to $42 per hour effective January 1, 2020 and would like a minimum of a two year contract.

The council discussed electronic speed limit signs with Sheriff Och. Todd County has one electronic speed limit sign and they have to move it throughout the county.

Sheriff Och reported that the Sheriff’s Department has one drone that is currently operational and they are working on getting the second one up and running in the next couple of weeks.

Member Brian Hollenkamp joined the meeting at 7:35 p.m.

Fire Chief Dan Berscheid was in attendance to request that Matt Zinniel and Cynthia Zinniel be added to the Fire Department roster. A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the recommendation to add Matt Zinniel and Cynthia Zinniel to the Fire Department roster. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Fire Chief Dan Berscheid discussed the 2020 Fire budget.

He is not recommending any changes at this time, but discussed the need to increase the amount set aside each year for vehicle replacement.

The following water/wastewater/maintenance items were discussed: 1. The rubber roof on the old city shop is cracking and allowing tree seeds to grow. Removing and killing the seedlings will have to be done before any repairs can be made.

2. During the annual lift station inspections, it was noted that one of the pumps at the west

lift station has a loud bearing noise. Due to the sewer rehabilitation project moving forward, the council has opted to take a chance on the pump rather than spending money on more costly repairs.

Tom’s Refuse has agreed to provide satellite recycling in the city the first Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. There is no charge for this service however any items that are not deemed recyclable will be charged a small fee to dispose of them. A Tom’s Refuse employee will be on site each month. The council will need to approve the satellite recycling program and must find a location for Tom’s Refuse to set up.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve the satellite recycling program with Tom’s Refuse with the location set up at the equipment storage shed on Woodman Street South next to Bob’s Woodcraft.

A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The Clerk reported that computer equipment in the office will need to be updated before January 1st as the operating system will no longer be supported after that time. It is possible that the purchase can be a reimbursable expense for the sewer project but three quotes for new equipment will need to be obtained.

The Clerk was instructed to advertise for the Maintenance Supervisor position.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to set the Truth in Taxation meeting for Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at 6:30 p.m., in council chambers. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The Clerk reported that the work in the Old Village Hall is still moving forward. ServPro is waiting on test results from the ceiling before they continue.

The Clerk attended a meeting in Todd County regarding election equipment. The Automark was scheduled to be replaced in 2019 but the Legislature has not approved the Equipment Choice Bill. This bill would have been for the ExpressVote equipment option to begin certification procedures for use in Minnesota precincts.

The legislature is set to review this proposal during the 20192020 session, with the plan to have it in place for the November 2020 General election. It is now the intent of the Todd County Auditor’s Office to move forward with the PollPad in 2019.

The PollPad would not be covered under any equipment grants should any become available. It was estimated that a precinct our size would need two PollPad devices at the cost of approximately $1,300 per unit with $125 yearly maintenance fee per unit.

If this change is approved by the Todd County Commissioners, the Council would be asked to submit an Intent to Purchase form by September 19th to the Auditor’s Office.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the closure of Woodman Street

South from Spruce Street to State Street and Woodman Street North from Minnesota Street to State Street for a Car Show. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Joseph Arnzen opened the public hearing at 7:05 p.m.

The purpose of the public hearing was to hear of the proposed amendments to the Planning and Zoning Ordinance. It is the desire of the City Council to amend the current ordinance to allow for exemptions to the subdivision procedures for the residents. This amendment would allow for some minor boundary adjustments to property that is already part of a plat.

In order for a piece of property to qualify for the exemption portion of this proposed change, all of the six items listed under item (G) would need to apply. The amendment would also include specified certification requirements for final plats.

The public hearing was closed at 7:23 p.m.

Farmers Losing Thousands of Dollars Under New House Democrat Law

A bad tax law approved by House Democrats and signed into law by Governor Walz last session is now costing farmers thousands of dollars.

Specifically, farmers and other business owners who traded equipment are having that trade value counted as income and can likely expect a bill from the Department of Revenue, and it won’t be cheap.

“We are hearing from farmers who are in shock by this news,” said Rep. Paul Anderson (R-Starbuck), the lead Republican on the House Greater Minnesota Jobs and Economic Development Finance Division. “I warned people during the last session that the lack of conformity was going to be a real problem and now, unfortunately, those concerns are coming back to bite farmers.”

The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Deb Wood, Jim Molitor, Norm Carlson, and Tony Maciej. Also present: Heather Brill and Caroline Wadman, and reporter Sheila McCoy. Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting Tuesday, August 6, 2019 were reviewed.

“We have had House floor debates discussing high stress levels being faced by farmers and the growing number of suicide rates among them, and now they are facing a new and unnecessary financial burden.”

The tax problems center on the failure to fully conform to Section 179 – accelerated depreciation – in the federal tax code. Under last session’s law, the Department of Revenue is directed to review Section 179 claims, adjust for new expensing limits, and review any gains or losses from the equipment they traded in.

For a farmer or business owner who traded in farm equipment or other machinery in 2018, and realized a financial gain on that equipment, the Department of Revenue will send a letter to them stating income taxes will now be owed on that gain immediately, while the

Heather Brill and Caroline Wadman, from Habitat for Humanity, was present to discuss with council the plans to build a habitat home in the City of Swanville in the North Berkey Avenue Addition. Mayor Lange reported on the progress of the surveying of the land to the north of the North Berkey Avenue Addition. The map of the surveyed lots was looked at. Council was in agreement the map looked good and should be recorded as is.

Charles and Peggy Parins decided to not purchase lot 3, block 2 in the North Berkey Addition. Mayor Lange made a motion to rescind resolution #19-0806A authorizing the sell of the lot to the Parins and refund the $500.00 down payment money. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Con Natvig applied for a land use permit to put in new cement steps and a 3’x7’ cement pad by his home.

P & Z committee has approved this permit. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the land use permit for Natvig.

The preliminary levy for 2020 was discussed. After discussion, Mayor Lange made a motion to raise the preliminary levy for 2020 $10,000.00. Jim Molitor seconded the motion.

Water and sewer rates were looked at and discussed. After discussion, Tony Maciej made a motion to raise rates for water and sewer 3% starting October 1, 2019. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. Tony Maciej made a motion to add a $2.00 per month meter fee and to charge a large water rate fee of $5.36 per thousand gallons+the base rate for those using large amounts of water from fire hydrants. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The monthly meter fee is to help defray the costs of new drive by meters which will be more accurate with water usage.

The city maintenance helper cleaner will be having knee surgery at the end of October, while recovering Julie Hollermann asked if it would be alright if she cleans the Swanville Center and the Swanville Community Center. Council was in agreement.

The Swanville Rural Fire Association set the yearly budget at $55,000.00 with the city assessment portion at $4393.52.

Jim Molitor made a motion to pay the assessment amount to the Fire Association. Deb Wood seconded the motion, motion carried.

It was reported to the council of a resident throwing a mattress and other garbage in the dumpster at the city park without permission. The clerk will send a letter to the resident with a fee of $75.00 to be paid to the city.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Tony Maciej made a motion to approve the claims. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Monday, October 7, 2019 at 4:30 p.m.

The clerk will publish the new date and time of the meeting for October.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Tony Maciej and seconded by Mayor Lange to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Meeting adjourned 8:25 p.m.

Davids and Anderson say they are working on legislation to alleviate this financial hit on farmers. The bill will fully fund conformity to Section 179. It will also cancel any penalties and inter-

est leveled by the revenue department on unpaid debts due to the Section 179 debacle.

“Our proposal should be met with urgency when the 2020 session begins,” Anderson said. “Farmers deserve better than this and we need to make it right.”

All lanes open on Highway 4 between Sauk Centre and Paynesville The Minnesota Department of Transportation is excited to announce Highway 4 between Interstate 94 near Sauk Centre and Highway 55 west of Paynesville will be open by noon on Thursday, Oct. 10.

The detour has been in place since July. Crews will begin to remove the detour. Be on alert for changes, watch for heavy moving equipment and removal of temporary signs and barricades.

During the project, crews reconstructed the road surface, replaced 40 pipes/culverts, removed three cattle passes and upgraded guardrails.

The $7.3 million road improvement project provides a smoother ride, improves drainage and safety on 21 miles of Highway 4 in Stearns and Kandiyohi counties.

MnDOT appreciates the local communities for their patience during this improvement project.

Alternatives to Trashing

By Gerry Osendorf, Melrose Heritage and history are important to people of any community. They are a links from the past to the present.

Although Melrose has lost many of its historic buildings, the citizens are fortunate to have the magnificent Church of St. Mary’s on the National Register of Historic Places since 1993. Rather than demolish it as Bishop Donald Kettler desires, here are some proposed uses for the building: 1. An expanded Senior Citizens Center. The present location in the city office building is cramped and limits many activities.

2. Melrose Museum expansion. The present museum needs more space to properly preserve the community’s artifacts and stories. This would also open up the existing Museum space for conversion a to a Bed and Breakfast or some other city use.

3. Community Center for large gatherings such as concerts, anniversaries, weddings, festivals and any number of community activities.

4. Refurbish the kitchen in the basement. Since none of the equipment suffered damage in the 2016 fire, the St. Mary’s students could easily eat there again. That would save on the cost of school lunches, have the students get a little fresh air each school day and save the damage on the school gym floor from the tables and chairs that need to be set up and taken down daily as the program currently exists.

5. All manner of recreational activities could be conducted on the huge main level set up as the needs arise.

6. An upper level could easily be added if necessary for expansion.

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz Do Not Be Ashamed; 2 Timothy 1:1-14 Shame is that sad and embarrassed feeling we should have when we realize we have done something wrong or foolish. In our modern world the determination of right and wrong has been moved from the realm of the divine to the realm of the self. Instead of right and wrong being part of the created order, individuals determine right and wrong for themselves. This means we often have completely different determinations of what people should be ashamed of.

The church needs to talk about shame because Satan has used the feeling of shame to silence the truth in today’s world. When Christians use the law to help people realize their sin and their need of a Savior, Satan has turned it around and tells people they should be ashamed for hurting this or that person’s feelings. The world tells us that we have done something wrong because we cause a person to feel bad about something they don’t believe is wrong.

Many of our social disagreements are fundamentally spiritual questions of what is right and wrong. Does a doctor do anything wrong when he cuts into a patient to remove a deadly tumor? The masterful way Satan convinces us today that we are wrong in preaching Law and Gospel is a force to be reckoned with.

Christians get called all kinds of names simply for speaking what we believe is the truth in love. They are names the world uses to try to get us to be ashamed of the Gospel. The reality is we have nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to the testimony about our Lord. The constitution also limits the government in endorsing or establishing any one belief over another. Those who believe there is nothing wrong with encouraging same sex relationships have the same rights as those who believe it is wrong. Christians should never be ashamed of testifying to the truth found in God’s Word because they tell us how God defines right and wrong.

The truth of God’s Word hurts and confuses all people because we are all

sinners. The shame and hurt we feel when confronted with divine truth is the only thing that shows us that we need a Savior. As the promised messiah Jesus is the savior of all mankind. We have nothing to be ashamed of unless the truth we testify about him is somehow untrue. The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) which St John’s is part of is rooted in God’s Word, the Bible and we take great measures to ensure our teachings agree 100% with this revealed will of God. If we spent as much time evangelizing as assuring ourselves that the Bible is true our church would be much bigger.

Call me what you want but I am 100% convinced that Jesus died for me and all humanity. I am convinced that God loved the World so much that he sent his only son to die for its salvation.

I have nothing to be ashamed of, you have nothing to be ashamed of. Tell people of this great love God has for them.

Invite them to a church that testifies to that truth. It is okay to be ashamed of your sin, we should be, but never be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord. Amen.
