I didn’t think that I could have a contract signed and returned to me in a few minutes instead of dropping a paper document in the mail, which would take a few days. I was operating in a time when catalog orders went into an envelope back to the retailer to be processed.

In other words, I didn’t anticipate the changes ahead – and neither did my competitors. Had I read a book like Daniel Burrus’ “The Anticipatory Organization,” I might have considered

investing in developing computer technology.

But over the years I wised up and learned to follow trends, even predict a few. Perhaps a little late to the party with some of that wisdom, but it made a big difference when I could start to see what was coming my way.

“Organizations of all types and sizes have traditionally relied on their ability to react as quickly as possible to shifting challenges, the demands of the marketplace, and other types of disruptions,” Burrus says. “That’s often referred to as agility.

“Being agile is very important, but it is simply no longer good enough,” he continues. “We are living in an era of accelerating disruption – not simple change, but outright systems and modes of thinking less relevant and even obsolete at an increasing pace.”

So he asks, “Would you rather have merely reacted as quickly as possible as change took place or anticipated it and crafted well-thought-out plans to take advantage of its game-changing opportunities?”

Burrus cites plenty of very recognizable examples to back up his theory. For instance, he tells about the introduction of the iPhone. Reporters asked the CEO of BlackBerry, which then dominated the cell phone market, if he was concerned about a threat to his business. His response might amuse us today. He didn’t think anyone would want to watch a video on a phone, and couldn’t imagine the appeal of watching on such a small screen. As of November 2018, the last time Apple released sales figures, more than 2.2 billion iPhones had been sold worldwide.

When you adopt an anticipatory mindset, you learn not to focus on your competition. When you do that, Burrus says, you will be tempted to adopt or adapt what they do and look like them. Instead of imitating, you learn to innovate by intentionally focusing on what the competition is not doing.

Consider this: Only four companies that made the Fortune 500 top 10 list 20 years ago remained on the list last year.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Memories Yes, farming was done differently 75 years ago.

Some of the farm work was still being done with horses. Farmers in those days had lived through the depression, when their products had very little value and now were able to be paid, not especially high prices, but a price that was more than what it cost them to produce the products. As a result, they attempted to produce as much as possible before the farm prices went down again.

Farm help was usually difficult to obtain, since many of the individuals who would normally be working on the farm were serving in the military.

The farmers needing help looked to a younger group of individuals to do the adult farm work. The farm labor problem was solved by farmers looking to their kids for help and in many cases, hiring neighbor kids to help with the work.

The wages for these young workers were low, but they accepted the fact that they must work and make a little money to send back to their family. In many cases, these young workers were working with equipment that was made to be operated by individuals of older ages. The young people were hired for a dollar amount, like $1.00 per day,

plus board and room. It also allowed the home families to have one less mouth to feed. At that time there were many large families.

One reader told of how at the age of ten, his dad had him plow with a team of 4 horses and a gang plow. Since the field contained some rocks, he was roped to the seat to avoid being knocked off of the seat if the plow hit a rock and he wasn’t able to pull the trip rope and control the team at the same time. It seemed that the fellow was surprised that he was able to do the job as well as a grown man.

Another story was told of a 13 year old, who was hired to do some plowing.

The plowing was done with a John Deere B and a 2 bottom plow. Plows in those days had a trip rope, which was pulled at the end of the field to raise the plow.

It usually had some bale wire on the end of it, which was attached to the tractor seat. Since the plow would unhook from the tractor if it hit a rock, the wire on the rope hooked on the seat would also easily release. The young fellow decided that he would tie the rope to the seat and not use the wire attachment method. He hit a rock, the tractor kept going, the rope pulled down the seat and finally broke. As the seat flew forward, it rapidly threw the driver into the steering column. A lesson learned, use the wire at the end of the rope for easy release from the seat.

The plow just mentioned was evidently a new and improved addition, since I remember a plow with a long metal handle, which the driver would reach from the seat, release and push down to raise the plow. To resume plowing

list, but they weren’t there just 10 years ago even though both were in existence.

Certainly there were computers, cell phones and bookstores aplenty during that time span. But they didn’t adapt to get ahead of trends.

I’ll be the first to acknowledge that sometimes, just keeping up with trends takes an enormous amount of energy. As I mentioned earlier, envelopes seemed to be a pretty safe commodity when I went into business. Fax machines emerged as a threat to paper transactions, and then email and texting. Automatic bill paying, the decline of direct mail and online ordering cut further into our industry.

We’ve had to reinvent ourselves time and time again, and I’m fairly certain that we will continue to do that as long as we are in existence.

As Burrus points out, “We’re going to be spending the rest of our lives in the future. Given that reality, why do we spend such little time or energy trying to anticipate what it has in store for us?”

He also emphasizes that “the number one certainty in this world is that the future is all about relationships . . . all the technology in the world is secondary to interaction between people – constructive, trust-based interaction.

Without that, what good is the most amazing technology?”

That’s music to my ears. I never want to be part of a business that puts technology ahead of people. I love interacting with my employees,

customers and even competitors. That’s how I get some of my best ideas. That’s where I see my future.

the operator reached back, squeeze the lever on the handle and allow the plow to again assume the operating position.

Hard on the shoulder, especially if you are a little guy.

I’m sure that many of you remember those old machinery seats, made of dish shaped metal, with some holes in the seats to help cool your rear. As years passed, these seats deteriorated from use, the metal became cracked, causing the cracks to open when sat upon and close when the rear was removed. These cracks were wide enough to allow an area located on your bottom end to enter the cracked area. When you stood up

and the crack closed, you got a really bad pinch. Darn, that hurt! That was why those seats had canvas covered cushions or a piece of animal hide including hair placed on them before use. Even in our younger days we forgot things, but if you forgot the seat cover, you might spend a cool morning with your much needed jacket on the seat under you.

Obituaries Michael J. “Mike” Ludwig Michael J. “Mike” Ludwig, age 89 of Melrose, passed away Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the CentraCare – Melrose Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 8 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment will be held in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church.

Mike loved playing baseball in his youth and enjoyed managing the Lake Henry Lakers for many years. He also enjoyed taking walks, playing cards, and reading.

Survivors include his stepchildren, Carla Bodeker of Melrose, Eric (Kay) Evens of Brooklyn Park, and Jonel (Bruce) Walz of Melrose; 12 grandchildren and 18 greatgrandchildren; brother, Herbert Ludwig; sisters, Anita Guiliani and Tina Zipae; and many loving relatives and friends.

Mike was preceded in death by his wife, LaVonne Ludwig on April 21, 2014; parents; sons, Mark Evens and Ned Evens; brothers and sisters, Peter Ludwig, Brother Robert Ludwig, Sister Katherine Ludwig, O.S.B., Celestine Ludwig, Oliva Salzl, Maryann Fasbender, Flo Graham, and Loretta Wuertz, and three infant brothers and sisters.

Scott Norman Radtke died November 1st at his home near Albany, a century farm which has been home to generations of the Radtke family since 1914. As a farmer and outdoorsman Scott took pride in the land, investing decades into conservation, w a t e r s h e d management and developing wildlife habitat. A self described ‘tree lover’ Scott was responsible for the planting of thousands of saplings. He loved fishing, and described deer hunting as the most important holiday season.

Scott served in the Air-force and as a brother of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed watching the Twins and Vikings, and inherited a love of coin collecting from his grandmother. Scott was known for his wicked sense of humor and ever sarcastic tone.

Scott is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years, Janet, and their two children, Son Brad (Ashley) and grandson Wesley of Ft. Wayne, IN, and daughter Kim (Kevin) of Edinburgh, UK. As well, by his mother Erna, sister, Pam (Ralph) and brother, Steven.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, November 8 at Seven Dolors Parish, 151 2nd St., Albany.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 PM on Thursday, November 7 at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home of Albany, as well as one hour prior to the memorial service at Seven Dolors on Friday.

Arrangements entrusted to the MillerCarlin Funeral Home of Albany.

Hildegard M. Schmiesing Hildegard M. Schmiesing, age 97 of Meire Grove, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the CentraCare – Melrose Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

Private family services will be held at a later date. Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Meire Grove.

Hildegard Schoenborn was born June 27, 1922 in Spring Hill, Minnesota to Louis and Mary (Schulzetenberg) Schoenborn. She attended St. John’s School in Meire Grove through the eighth grade. She was united in marriage to Alphonse “Al” Schmiesing on June 21, 1949 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill, Minnesota. Hildegard worked with her husband on the family farm along with raising their four children.

She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove. Hildegard

held the Blessed Virgin Mary near and dear to her heart and prayed the rosary daily. In her younger years, Hildegard helped with a variety of activities at St. John’s. She always had a green thumb and was very particular in the way she treated the soil to grow her beautiful flower garden.

Survivors include her children, Jan (Tim) Wingate of Melrose, Diane (Mike) Johnson of Smyrna, Tennessee, and Mark Schmiesing of Sauk Centre; eight grandchildren, Kristina, Teresa, Michelle, Chris, Stephanie, Dylan, Briana, and Makena; five great-grandchildren, Eddie, James, Henry, Addisten, and Taylor; brothers, Jerome (Bernice) Schoenborn of St. Cloud and David Schoenborn of Spring Hill; sister-in-law, Lidwina Schoenborn; and brother-in-law, Alcuin Illies.

Hildegard was preceded in death by her husband, Alphonse Schmiesing on September 29, 2014; son, David Schmiesing; parents; brothers and sisters, Norbert Schoenborn, Art Schoenborn, Rose Mary Schoenborn, and Doreen Illies.

Eleanor Lemke

A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 8, 2019 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Albany, MN for Eleanor Lemke, age 83, who died Tuesday at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home after fighting a courageous battle against cancer.

Inurnment will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery.

A gathering of friends and relatives will be from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. Friday morning at the church.

Elmer A. Ostendorf

Elmer A. Ostendorf, age 77, of Freeport, died peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, November 4, 2019 at his home near St. Anthony/Freeport, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Friday, November 15 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony with Rev. Julius Beckermann, O.S.B. officiating. Inurnment will be at the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday, November 14 and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, November 15 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony.

Elmer Albert Ostendorf was born January 1, 1942 in Krain Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Frank and Henrietta (Rademacher) Ostendorf. On November 5, 1966 he married Joyce May at the St. Paul Cathedral in St. Paul, Minnesota. Elmer farmed his whole life. He was born on his family farm and also passed away there.

He loved to watch birds and all Minnesota sports. Elmer was especially passionate about football, baseball, and basketball.

After retiring from farming, Elmer worked for Cenex in Albany part time for a few years. He enjoyed golfing and fishing in his retirement.

Elmer was a lifetime member of St.

in Albany, MN to Jacob and Ida (Radtke) Christen. She married Norman on January 9, 1954 in the Parsonage at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Eleanor enjoyed fishing, gardening, canning, embroidering, sewing and watching The Young and the Restless.

Survivors include her children, Karen (Melvin), Brian (Sue), Kevin (Cheryl), Duane (Deb), Dale, Carol (Dean), Debra (Ed), Darrell, Gloria (Richard), Lisa (Tony); sister, Helen Lemke; sister-in-law, Lorraine Sager; 17 grandchildren and 18 greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Norman; son-in-law, Dale Evens; daughter-in-law, Kathy Niebolte; and her brother, Harold Christen.

Memorials are preferred.

Arrangements are with the Wenner Funeral Home, Richmond.

Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony, where he served as a lector and usher. He was also a member of the Albany American Legion.

D a v i d Thieschafer, age 68 of Osakis, formerly of Swanville, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Nov. 1, 2019 at his home in rural Osakis, MN. David Gerard was born in Little Falls on October 3, 1951 to Roman and Iris (Mootz) Thieschafer.

He was one of twelve children born into this family. David attended Swanville Public Schools and graduated from Staples Vocational School. He did turkey farming for several years and began his trucking career at Hasselbring Auto Transport of Clearwater. David loved trucking and continued his career at Sandberg, Kohorst and most recently, Hensley Inc. On December 24,1992, David married Silvia Biesanz and together they operated T & T Trucking up until the time of his death.

David enjoyed spending time with his family, taking trips to Wendover, NV, mowing lawn and working in the yard with his dog Monroe. Often you could find Dave sitting in his lawn chair in the company of friends enjoying a cold beer. He loved living out in the country where he could admire the deer and birds. He was a member of the

At this fall’s ITEM, Information and Technology Educators of MN, conference Wanda Erickson received ‘The Joan Larson Lifetime Achievement Award’ in honor of her years of dedication to libraries. Wanda is currently the school librarian at Cora Eckstrom Media Center and the Library Services Coordinator at Great River Regional Library-Upsala. She has worked in libraries since 1981. Wanda has expertise gained from her years of experience. She skillfully arranges a few author visits each year. According to her calculations she has had over 60 author visits in her libraries since 1990. She collaborated with State Library Services to present a webinar titled Bring an Author to Your School! In addition, she has helped at the ITEM bookstore several times. Wanda has been an ITEM member since 2002. Wanda is a library leader. It is for those reasons that, this year, Wanda is awarded with the Joan Larson Lifetime Achievement Award. Submitted by Donna Ohlgren.

The Upsala Drama Club will be presenting the Off-Broadway hit “Puffs” for their fall play this year.

“Puffs” is a parody of a very famous series of books and movies about the students at a certain school for magic.

This show follows the underachievers at the school as they are sorted into houses, compete for the house cup, battle evil wizards, and much much more.

The large cast includes Collin Prom, Alex Roerick, Kennedy Allen, Devin Prokott, Cat Lobo, Audrey Thomas, Olivia Peterson, Alice Hebig, Olivia Hollermann, Michael Young, Anna Blonigen,

The show has its roots in improv comedy. But there’s also an underlying message that while we may feel like an insignificant character in life, we are all a hero - in some way - to someone.

Mike and Vi were married on November 22, 1969.

UC-Botics also received recognition at the NMRC Championship event by earning the “Engineering Inspiration” Award. This award was given for the team’s dedication and diligence of sharing the love and joy of STEM and Robotics with other teams around the state, and for being a shining light and beacon for other teams to draw inspiration from.

UC-Botics has participated in the NMRC and the championship event since its inception in 2017. The NMRC is also the first conference in the state of Minnesota officially recognized by the Minnesota State High School League.

The NMRC is now 28 member teams strong and covers over 35,000 square miles. Mr. Robertson currently is listed as the Vice President for the Conference.

The Upsala Robotics Team, UC-Botics, took a venture North to Thief River Falls this year for their annual “Northern Minnesota Robotics Conference” (NMRC) Championship event. This year Mr. and Mrs. Robertson took 9 students from Upsala to compete in a game called “Deep Space.” The same game that was played last spring when the team went to Duluth. The Conference event put Upsala up with 18 other schools from NorthWest Minnesota and North Dakota.

UC-Botics made their way into finals as a first round pick for the #2 Seed Alliance. The Alliance was made up with UC-Botics along with Team 876 - Thunder Robotics from Hatton-Northwood, ND; and Team 3754 - Trek North Robotics from Bemidji, MN. After some difficult matches, the alliance played in the consolation round match against the

What is joy? Is it a feeling? An attitude? An emotion? Is it something we “get” or “discover” or “find” on the road of life? Is it temporary or permanent? Can it be passed from one person to another? Is it internal or external? Is it possible it could be all of the above?

Moses reminded God that He was a God filled with unfailing love. In earnestness he begged God to show His compassion and relent – “We’ve suffered long enough! When we awaken tomorrow morning,” he prayed, “fill our empty hearts with a renewed awareness of Your unfailing love.” Moses knew that only God could restore the “joy of their salvation” and the blessings that repentance brings.

Often we become like the Israelites - wanting God’s blessings without being faithful to Him. Hearts once filled with joy are empty because of sin. It’s time to repent!

Automotive Advice from The Under the Hood® Show

Dear Motor Medics, I want to get my wife a remote start for her 2010 Acura MDX but I need to do some research first. I have been told that adding anything to my car which has only 20k miles on it will void the warranty.

I have never had a remote start, but it seems like almost everyone I know has one. It can’t be that all of them have no warranty. Is there anything I should look out for when getting one as far as the kind of unit that will or won’t work with my car?

-Jerry in Omaha Dear Jerry, Adding aftermarket electronics won’t void your warranty if the part you add to the car does not interfere with the operation of the car and the installation does not damage the car. When you have a remote car-starter installed make sure the shop that does it for you has trained installers who know your car. The shop should also have the technical support of a reputable company who stands behind the starters they sell. These things ensure that you will not have an issue with your warranty. On the other hand, we have seen many do it yourself installers create issues with the vehicles sensitive electronics that resulted in expensive dealership repair costs. When choosing a unit make sure you get one with the features you want such as the range you need; too short and you won’t be happy.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, My car needs new front and rear brake pads and rotors. They offered me three different pad choices and I was confused and haven’t had the work done. I also want to know about

rotors which seem expensive to replace.

Why would I have to replace the rotors instead of machining them? My 2003 Honda currently has about 98,000 miles on it.

-Mark in Sioux City, Iowa Dear Mark, It’s common to have several choices of brake pads available but to avoid confusion with my own customers I take the time to explain the difference between pads and note that pad X is the factory specified pad. When there is a choice it’s usually a ceramic pad, a semi-metallic pad, and an organic pad.

One will be what the factory specifies for the car while the other two can help cut noise and/or brake dust or save some cash. New rotors have really come down in price and many shops don’t machine them any longer as they wear so fast that they are often too thin to machine or severely rusted from the elements which necessitates their replacement. If the rotors still have enough material and not too much-run out they can be machined but the cost may be close to what you will spend to replace them, and they will be thinner so the next replacement may come sooner. Don’t forget cheaper is not better when it comes to brakes.

Burnhamville Township September 24, 2019 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held September 24, 2019 at the Burtrum Community Center.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Joe Muellner, Mike Berscheit; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Erv Herdering was also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of August 27, 2019 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Berscheit and was seconded by Sup. Muellner.

Motion passed.

For correspondence the township board members received letters from planning and zoning concerning feed lot definitions and setbacks hearing on October 3, a letter from Minnesota Pollution Control about water, and an unsigned letter concerning some buildings in the City of Burtrum. The township board has no say on rules of buildings in the city.

Election training for new

equipment has been set and our election judges are registered.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5814 through 5823: Rev. $762.48; R & B $6,239.35. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion.

Motion passed.

A resident of Dogwood Loop called to ask if the speed signs could be taken down. Sup. Berscheit made a motion to keep the speed zone signs up on Dogwood Loop as the residents had asked for this to be called a rural residential area. Motion was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

Sup. Johnson made a motion to accept the snow contract from Herdering, Inc. for $100 per hour with a fuel clause. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $47,200.61. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

Since the lawyer did not arrive board tabled the nuisance resolution.

The Burnhamville Town-

ship board acknowledge this is a tough wet year, however, they would like to remind landowners to be responsible and clean up the roadways if users track mud on the roads.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:26 p.m.

Next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center Sup. Berscheit reopened the township board meeting at 7:29.

The lawyer Jean Gustafson had arrived to discuss the run down property in Pillsbury. She gave the board an outline of a resolution complaint for the township to present to Todd County Planning and Zoning stating the building is a nuisance, unsafe, and a liability.

After discussion, Sup. Johnson made a motion to approve resolution 2019-02 for complaint about dilapidated house in Pillsbury.

Sup. Berscheit seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Sup. Johnson motioned to adjourn meeting at 8:04. Sup. Berscheit seconded the motion.

I’m tired of all this, and I want to stop busting my budget and get control of my money once and for all. Do you have any advice?

-Patrick Dear Patrick, Years ago, when I lost everything financially, there were two or three extremely strong emotions that spurred me toward change. Probably the biggest emotion was fear. I was scared to death I’d be broke for the rest of my life, and not be able to take care of my family.

Don’t misunderstand me, though. I don’t think you should ever live your life in fear. But a reasonable, healthy level of fear where some things are concerned can be a fantastic motivator.

Another emotion was disgust. I realized the way I had been living and handling money was stupid. So, I made a proactive, conscious decision that I was going to change, and things were going to be different. The third emotion was contentment. You know, advertisers try to make us believe our lives will be better, and we’ll be happier, if we just go out and buy their stuff. I can tell you from personal experience when this idea is crammed down your throat

every day, it can warp your perception of contentment and happiness. Lots of stuff does not equal lots of happiness.

If you’ve tried several times, and are still falling back into the same old trap, maybe you should approach your situation in a practical, day-to-day way. Stop going places where you’re tempted to spend money on silly things.

When you go out running errands and shopping, make a list of only the bare necessities, and take along just enough cash to pay for them.

Spending money on a bunch of stuff you don’t need, and probably don’t even really want, isn’t going to bring you contentment. It’s just going to bust your budget, and put you in a financial hole that will, sooner or later, become very difficult—if not impossible—to dig your way out of!

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz Abide in Jesus’ Word; John 8:31-36 Discipleship begins by abiding in the Word of God. Dwelling, staying in the Word of God is how you know that you are truly a disciple of Jesus. “You will know the truth,” Jesus tells us, “and the truth will set you free.” The truth comes through abiding in Jesus’ Word, Jesus is the Word made flesh, that dwells among us (John 1).

Too often we are like the people Jesus was speaking with: they don’t want to stop, they don’t want to dwell on one thing for too long, they insist that they are free without dwelling in Jesus. They have never been slaves to anyone they insist. As a people they forget about Egypt, Babylon and the Greeks. They forget about the Romans who currently subjugated them.

Free under the Romans? I don’t think so. Freedom is an elusive concept even for people like us who supposedly live in a free society. Stop paying your taxes and you will find out how much freedom you have. Do something that causes harm to your neighbor and see how free you are to continue that. People have been given great sexual freedom in our society but at the same time groups have lost religious freedom. Currently there is only one religious view allowed to be taught in our public schools and that is one of Atheistic naturalism.

Mankind likes the impression that it is free, free to determine our path in life but we are not free. We are bound to sin, we are slaves to sin. Sin of all shapes and sizes has a way of entangling and imprisoning us in its lies and deceptions. As we seek to free ourselves other sins of our flesh tend to offer us freedom only to lead us to another prison.

As the creator and author of Life Jesus knows sin, before Adam and Eve ate the

forbidden fruit God already possessed the knowledge of Good and Evil. In taking on human flesh Jesus comes to free us from sin. His instructions are simple. Abide in my word. Dwell, stay, have your very being in the true Word of God you will know the truth, and the truth, Jesus, will set you free.

At the time of the reformation religious orders with monks and nuns were the church’s answer to dwelling in Jesus’ word alone. They faced the same challenges we do today in that we dwell in a culture, a political world, a mundane society that isn’t exactly holy and Christ-like. As Luther and the other reformers abided in Jesus’ Word and began to understand the freedom we had in the Gospel they realized that this freedom applied to a person’s entire life.

People living in all walks of life could experience the freedom of Christ and it just meant they needed to abide in Jesus’ Word.

Jesus speaks to all people, those living in supposedly free societies and those who are less free. Abide in my word, he says, And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. When one looks at the 3rd commandment you see God’s desire to have us abide in his word, not for an hour but for a whole day. In Christ we are free to shape this holy time as we think is best.

Church is a time where sinners, all of us, can abide in Jesus’ Word and get to know the truth, and that Truth, the truth of Jesus, the truth of the Gospel will set us free.

Freedom from sin is worth abiding in Jesus’ Word to get and it is a freedom worth fighting for. Amen.

A Memorial Gathering, celebrating the life of Tilla May Asseln (Oliver), 77, will be held from 4-6 PM on Thursday, November 7 at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in Holdingford, 631 S. Main Street.

Burial will be held at a later date in the Minnesota State Veteran’s Cemetery, where Tilla will be laid to rest along with her husband, Richard. Tilla passed away Sunday, November 3 in Pine River, MN, surrounded by her loving family and beloved dog, Zoy. Tilla was born on May 6, 1942, in Haddam, KS, the daughter of Lloyd and Viola (Trimble) Oliver. On October 1,

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Jane Mary (Wagner) Skwira, age 65 of Holdingford, will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, November 7th at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Millerville, Minnesota. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Jane died peacefully Saturday at the St. Cloud Hospital, surrounded by her loved ones. There will be a visitation after 10:00 AM, Thursday at the church in Millerville.

Jane was born, along with her twin sister, Jean, on April 27, 1954 in Alexandria to Florian and Beulah (Reger) Wagner. She grew up on a farm near Millerville. She attended grade school at St. Mary’s in Millerville and graduated from Brandon High School in 1972. Jane joined the Women’s Army Corp. She went to basic training at Fort McClelen, Alabama and then to Fort Sam Houston for training as a medical corpsman. She worked at the Darnell Army Hospital at Fort Hood Texas. While being stationed at Fort Hood,

1960, she was united in marriage to Richard Asseln in Geneva, NE; Tilla and Richard enjoyed over 50 years of devotion until Richard’s passing in February of 2015.

Tilla worked as a secretary for St. Cloud Tire for many years, after which, she held numerous positions at other companies until her retirement in the mid-1990s. Her generosity and kindness will always be remembered as her final wishes included donating her estate and remaining finances to the St. Stephen Alano Society.

Tilla will remain in the hearts of her children, Cindy (Ray) Pilarski, and Chris (Steve) Lorentzen; grandchildren, Matt (Christy), Adam, Angie, and Mandy; five great-grandchildren; siblings, Victor Oliver and Melvin Oliver; as well as other extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Richard Asseln; parents, Lloyd and Viola; and one brother Clifford Oliver.

Jane was sent to Managua Nicaragua for medical relief following a devastating earthquake that killed thousands of people.

She was discharged from the Army and attended the St. Cloud Technical School L.P.N. program and graduated in 1979.

She worked at the St. Cloud VA Medical Centeruntil she decided to stay home and raise her children while actively helping in the daily farm operation. Jane married Ray Skwira on October 16, 1982 in Millerville.

Jane’s greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Opole.

Jane is survived by her children, Jill (Mathew) Mogensen, Brandon; Ryan (Londa Olson) Skwira, Fargo, ND; Rick (Karla) Skwira, Brainerd and Justin Skwira, Holdingford. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Hailey, Avery, Jayden, Quinn, Tanner and Luther, her husband Raymond and her brothers and sisters, Mary (Dan) Hanson, Parkers Prairie; Thomas (Linda) Wagner, Alexandria; Jean (Richard) Bitzan, Garfield; Cliff (Michele) Wagner, Garfield; and Jennifer (Curt) Lysfjord, Garfield, and nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Florian Wagner, Jr. & Donald Wagner and sister, Irene Roers, and nephews, Chad Wagner and Eric Roers.

Mass of Christian Burial for Wallace (Wally) Brever will be held on Friday, November 8, 2019 at 11:00 AM at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie. Burial will take place at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Clarissa.

Visitation will be held Thursday, November 7 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Iten Funeral Home in Browerville, and Friday, November 8 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie.

Wally was born July 5, 1942, in Clarissa, to Gerhard & Julia (Drajna) Brever.

He graduated from Clarissa High School in 1960. After graduation Wally moved to the twin cities where he met Joyce while working at Montgomery Wards. Wally and Joyce were married in Clark, SD on August 24, 1963. They moved to Long Prairie in 1965. Wally started working at Hart’s Press; retiring in 2004. He also worked as a parttime police officer for the City of Long

Prairie for several years. Wally enjoyed playing with his grandchildren, hunting, fishing, camping, and his ’63 Chevy Impala.

Wally is survived by his wife Joyce; his dogs Pepper and Buddy; children: Wallace John Brever, Julie (Dean) Lunser, Michael (Missy) Brever, Dennis (Melisa) Brever; grandchildren: Derek (Tracy) Lunser, Wade Lunser, Cole Lunser, Brandon Brever, Brayley Brever, Justin Brever, Jeremy (Hanae) Brever, Jared Brever, Nathan Blowers, and great-grandson Dawson Merten; siblings: Daryl (Karen) Brever, Bernadette Meyer, brother-in-law Duane Hanes, and sister-in-law Jeanie Brever.

3 Lies About Car Payments

By Rachel Cruze Car payments are so prevalent in society today that people think they’re a normal part of life.

But if you took the average car payment of $545 and invested it into a Roth IRA instead, 30 years later you’d be sitting on a cool $1.4 million. Look, I like my car, too— but not that much!

For me, that’s motivation enough to save up and pay cash for a car instead of financing one. But I get plenty of objections to this way of thinking. Here are some of the excuses I hear. And the truth about them: 1. “But the 0% interest rate is a great deal!”

No, it’s not. That new car starts losing value the instant you drive it off the lot.

From the first month of ownership, you’d owe more on your car than it’s worth. Four years later, you’d still have a year or two of payments left, but your car would’ve lost most of its value.

And let’s not forget that 0% is not the same as cash, and not everyone who falls for the 0% marketing pitch actually qualifies for the deal. But by then, you’re already in love with the car of your dreams and are willing to sign anything to drive it home. And of course, some of those “deals” aren’t quite as attractive once you read the fine print.

2. “I just had a baby, so I need a ‘safe’ car. . . like a new Tahoe.”

This is one I hear all the time from people I know who have kids—especially new parents. Do babies take up more room? Yes. Do you want your baby to be safe in the car? Yes! But those things don’t equal a new SUV. Safe does not equal new.

There are plenty of safe, pre-owned cars out there. And you shouldn’t let your desire to keep up with the Joneses drive your money habits and decisions.

The Joneses are broke. Keeping up with broke people who are just trying to look rich is a really bad plan.

3. “How am I supposed to buy a car without a car loan?”

Save up and pay cash for your cars.

Yep, I mean it!

All it takes is making the decision to pay yourself instead of the bank. If you have a car loan, go crazy and pay it off quickly. Or, sell it to get the process rolling to pay yourself instead of the bank.

The first car you buy with cash might not be your dream car, but that’s okay. Just because it’s not your dream car doesn’t mean it has to be a junker.

Pick out a car with a body style that doesn’t change often. I can’t tell you how many luxury-brand cars I see on the road, and yet have no idea what year they were made.

The moral of the story is simple.

Own your cars. Don’t let them own you!

Design Electric’s $100,000 matching gift to benefit Suicide Prevention & Education CentraCare Foundation’s 2019 Community Campaign, which runs through Dec. 31, is raising funds to support CentraCare’s efforts to challenge the stigma, increase awareness and educate groups about resources available to prevent suicide. Suicide is the eighth leading cause of death in Minnesota and tenth nationally.

Design Electric will generously match any new gift up to $100,000 received by Dec. 31, 2019. All matching gift proceeds will be directed to Suicide Prevention and Education.

This effort is important because one in five Americans experiences mental

illness. Of great concern is the fact that 60 percent of adults and 50 percent of youth with mental illness did not receive mental health services last year.

CentraCare hopes to break the silence and stigma that isolates those experiencing symptoms.

Suicide risk training can help family, friends, teachers and others know what to look for and how to connect the person with professionals. CentraCare also hopes to provide additional support and resources for suicide loss survivors.
