Celebrating youth service at We Day

The atmosphere was beyond electric: 18,000 cheering teenagers, and it wasn’t for a rock star, a pro athlete or even canceling school. This remarkable group of students gathered in St. Paul, Minn., for We Day in early October to be recognized for their stellar record of volunteering. And this was only one of more than a dozen such gatherings across North America.

We Day is described as a celebration of the power of young Americans to create positive and lasting change, not only in their communities and around the world, but within themselves.

No one could attend without an invitation; no one could buy a ticket. Participants had to earn their spots, and were rewarded with inspirational stories and star-studded performances. To qualify, each attendee has to engage in one international and one local cause. And they took home plenty of ideas for new projects.

Madeline Titus, a junior from St. Cloud, Minn., has attended several We Days. Her enthusiasm is evident. She

said, “It’s hard to describe the day. I’ve never experienced anything like it. It’s like 18,000 teenagers screaming, not for Justin Bieber, but for something that actually matters. It’s one of those times you get goosebumps all over your arms.” Madeline was featured in a local magazine for her part in the creation of an anti-bullying workshop and her volunteer work at a nursing home.

We Day began in Canada in 2007 by a non-profit, Free the Children. That organization was founded in 1995 by Craig and Marc Kielburger and ten fellow seventh-graders who were inspired by the story of a 12-year-old Pakistani child slave. Their mission was to free children overseas from exploitation and poverty.

They were not deterred from achieving their goal even when the international charities they contacted could offer them no advice on how young people could get involved. They were determined to prove that kids could make a difference. They decided to start by encouraging kids to take action on issues that mattered to them. The movement now includes 2.3 million energetic young people who want to make a difference at home and around the world.

Their newest initiative is a year of action dubbed We Act, a free program designed to inspire and enhance a school’s service learning initiatives. Free the Children offers lesson plans, campaign kits, online resources and mentorship to students and teachers. Participation in these programs may also earn them a ticket into We Day . . . because remember, no one can buy a ticket.

A major initiative in helping children transform their lives is a focus on education. Free the Children believes that education allows learners to become leaders, and gain the tools to lift themselves and their communities out of poverty.

The goal is to build 200 schools in developing communities around the world.

My good friend Marilyn Carlson Nelson, former CEO and Chairman of the worldwide conglomerate Carlson Inc., spoke at the event, and hasn’t stopped gushing about the enthusiasm and commitment she witnessed. Marilyn was a shining example as a speaker, given her storied record of voluntarism and community and global involvement. She shared these words: “This is my message to both you girls and you guys – you can make your dreams come true, and I’ll give you one secret to making that happen. Museum for the Fallen Laura Becker-Pallister’s son Shawn joined the Marines and during his first deployment to Afghanistan she began to understand the full scope of being a military parent. After his deployment, Shawn returned to his base in North Carolina, but seventeen Marine families were not so lucky. When St. Cloud lost one son, a young man who had attended Shawn’s high school, it was then that Laura’s idea began to take shape.

A “Museum for the Fallen” is Laura’s dream to honor those who died in service to our country and to ensure they would never be forgotten. The museum would provide communities with a living history of heroes, and in addition to learning the names of those who gave their lives; visitors would get to know them through visuals, stories, and memorabilia.

Obituaries Stanley R. “Stan” Karels

Stanley R. “Stan” Karels, age 83 of Melrose, died peacefully with his wife at his side after a yearlong battle with cancer on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, November 11 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating and Deacon Ernie Kociemba assisting. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m.

Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose.

Stanley Richard Karels was born April 24, 1930 in Yellow Bank Township, Lac qui Parle County, Minnesota to Anton and Katherine (Lambrecht) Karels.

Stan served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War, earning the Purple Heart. He was united in marriage to Deloras Matzke on May 25, 1968. She

passed away on June 6, 1974. Stan then married Leona (Monnens) Unzen on June 4, 1983 at St. Mary’s of the Lake in Plymouth, MN. Stan worked at Honeywell on the assembly line and as a group leader for 33 years. He retired in August of 1995 and moved to Melrose a year later. Stan enjoyed hunting rabbits, traveling, fishing, wildlife, and seeing different sights.

He was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Melrose Lions Club, American Legion Post 101, and Knights of Columbus Council #1633.

He earned the Helen Keller Award as a member of the Melrose Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife, Leona Karels of Melrose; step-children, Frances Allen of Keene, NH, Ronald (Carol) Unzen of Madison, MN, and Rebecca (John) Ferkinhoff of St. Cloud; six step-grandchildren; four step-greatgrandchildren; and sisters, Sr. Bertha Karels, O.S.B. of St. Paul and Sr. Natalie Karels, O.S.B. of Lacey, WA. He was in preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Deloras Karels; and brothers and sisters, Angeline Schmidt, Rufinus Karels, Gerhardt Karels, Lawrence Karels, Alphonse Karels, Florian Karels, and Josephine Sis. Serving as urn bearers will be William and Leland Karels.

Verena M. Wegleitner Verena M. Wegleitner, age 96 of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

Thursday, November 7 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Verena Marie Heinen was born January 6, 1917 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Henry and Elizabeth (Poepping) Heinen. She was united in marriage to Anton “Tony” Wegleitner on November 23, 1937 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa.

Verena and Tony farmed north of Freeport until their retirement in January of 1978.

Verena was a census taker for the Melrose School District and also worked at the St. Francis Church Bazaar where she was in charge of making the dressing.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and the Christian Mothers. Verena enjoyed quilting, crocheting and knitting. In her younger years, she liked to garden and travel to Washington with her aunts.

Survivors include her husband, Anton “Tony” Wegleitner of Melrose; children, Leander (Pat) Wegleitner of

2003 in Staples to Loren and Brandy (Hartman) Sutton. He was a fourth grader at Swanville Elementary School. Gavin was always helpful to others; he was very considerate and responsible to others.

He liked his money and was a saver. He enjoyed his video games, especially his WII and DS. He liked being outdoors, camping, fishing, and floating. He took some summer trips to Wisconsin Dells and to Mount Rushmore. He loved to bake; his favorite was the apple cookie. He loved his food; he was always hungry.

Gavin is survived by his parents Loren Sutton of Swanville and Brandy Sutton of Royalton; sister, Brandell (Hunter) Siltman; brother, Chandler; grandmothers, Elaine Sutton, Joyce Hartman; great grandmother, Mary Ann Hartman, and Godparents, Luke Habein, and Jolene Sutton. He was also loved and survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Leo Sutton and Robert H. Hartman

Mabel C. Lahr

Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at Assumption Catholic Church in Eden Valley for Mabel C. Lahr, age 87, who passed away Friday, November 1, 2013 at her home.

Rev. Jerome Naduvathaniyil, OSB officiated and burial followed in the parish cemetery.

Mabel was born Sept. 15, 1926 in Union Grove Township to Russel & Carol (Ranney) Lounsbury. She married Frank Lahr on May 24, 1948 at Church of Our Lady in Manannah. To this union were born 13 children. They have lived on the farm near Paynesville for 53 years.

Mabel was a member of Assumption Catholic Church where she was involved in Christian Mothers, Catholic Aid, Assumption Guild, and adoration hour.

She enjoyed cooking, baking cookies, gardening, canning, knitting, crocheting, traveling, helping on the farm, and spending time with family. Mabel was a

good hearted, pleasant, faithful, patient, easy going person who never complained, always had a smile on her face, and always put others needs before her own.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Frank of Paynesville; children, Linda Abraham (special friend Thomas Whittet) of New Ulm, Ronald of Eden Valley, Joyce (Wayne) Henfling of Eden Valley, Thomas (Jill) of Paynesville, Gene (Michelle) of Grey Eagle, Wayne of West Concord, Harry (Shannon) of Buffalo, LynnKay (Vance) Kesler of Roseville, Nancy (Jim) Segal of Becket, MA, Joann (Jerry) Leimer of Cloquet; sisters and brothers, Floris Mickley of Petaluma, CA, Dewey Lounsbury of Litchfield, Rollie Lounsbury of St. Maries, ID, David Lounsbury of Monticello, Lucy Urdahl of Litchfield, and Donna Burr of Litchfield; 23 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren; and many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

-Debbie Dear Debbie, It’s really pretty simple.

The first thing is the same advice I give to married couples, and that is to live on a monthly budget. Sit down at the end of each month and write down—on paper—all your expenses and income for the following month.

When you think about it, budgeting really isn’t that difficult. Some of your expenses, like your rent or mortgage payment, will be the same. If you have a car payment (which I really hope you don’t), it will remain constant, as well.

Things like groceries and utilities may fluctuate based on the time of year, but you can make a pretty accurate estimate by looking at past months.

The second thing I’d recommend is that you find someone to be your accountability partner. It should be someone who is wise and good with money and a person who loves you enough to call your bluff or hurt your feelings a little when necessary. They can be a close friend, parent or even your pastor. Just sit down together over a cup of coffee once a month and talk about your finances. You could even go over your budget together line by line.

Ideally an accountability partner is someone who’s ahead of you on a particular journey and can help direct you along the path to wisdom. It’s their job to hold you accountable for what you’re doing and the decisions you’re making, for your own good!

and her outlook on life, spiritual matters and money for the better. I could pay off the loans for her, but I’m wondering if there’s a better way to help.

-Eddie Dear Eddie, If I were in your shoes, and I had the means to pay off her student loan debt without putting myself at risk financially, that’s exactly what I’d do.

Sometimes the best gift you can give a person is to let them wallow around for a while in the mess they made. Being forced to work your way out of bad decisions and irresponsible behaviors is a great remedy in lots of cases. But in this situation, with what you’ve told me about her previous health issue, and the fact that she’s now being responsible with money, behaving and making better life choices, I’d want her to be as free as possible as she takes up this new walk.

My advice is to try and be a huge blessing to your daughter. Right now, she’s a lot like the prodigal son. She’s come around in her thinking and realizes what’s right and what really matters.

Give her the biggest hug she’s ever had, Eddie. Then, throw a party and write a check to knock out that student loan debt!

A Big Ten Network film crew recently spent the better part of an afternoon capturing footage at the farm of Rep. Paul Anderson, R-Starbuck.

The network’s production highlights a project at the West Central Research

and Outreach Center in Morris that uses electricity produced by a wind turbine to separate nitrogen from the air and converts it into ammonia fertilizer. If the process can be fine-tuned and done on a commercial scale, it would allow

nitrogen fertilizer, a key component in the production of corn, to be produced locally, Anderson said. Anderson indicated that technology could help lower transportation costs for the bulk commodity and give rural Minnesota another economic boost.

“It’s an exciting possibility and the team at the University of Minnesota and the research station at Morris is to be commended for their work in this area,” Anderson said. “If we could use two very common components that are all around us – namely the wind which produces electricity for the process along with nitrogen from the air – it’s win-win situation. Nitrogen is a key factor in the production of corn, and currently most of it is produced a long ways from Min-

Legislative Update -By State Rep. Ron Kresha Minnesota Through The Lens:

Deer season is upon us and we are just weeks away from Thanksgiving. The cool, brisk harvest and hunting weather is a great preamble to the evening heat from a fireplace or wood stove. I hope you are able to enjoy the Fall activities before the snow slows down our pace.

I continue to travel around the district to hear constituent concerns. On Sunday, I spent the afternoon at a Little Falls neighborhood get together. Most of the conversation revolved around the continuing growth or our State Government yet the lack of real help in rural MN. One area in particular is the increasing “care gap” created by inadequate funding equity. It is no secret that our long-term care and assisted living facilities receive less funding than the metro counterparts. This continues to strain our facilities and push them to the edge of closure. I was thankful to hear the concerns and to further continue to fight for our elderly care facilities.

Tuesday evening I shifted focus to the Long Prairie Chamber of Commerce annual meeting. Our area continues to feel the pressure of diminishing main street businesses and real economic growth. It is evident we need to continue to focus on education, innovation, and entrepreneurs. State funding needs to be equalized to our rural schools; and we

should stop trying to dissuade innovation and entrepreneurs with technology taxes and high business start up costs.

All of these are things the legislator can solve, in my opinion.

It seems to me as I travel and hear people’s concerns that a focus on rural economic growth is key to our schools and way of life. I have not heard a lot of people ask for a “glitchy” website or to be kicked off their insurance plan. With an estimated 140,000 Minnesotans losing their plans to be replaced with more expensive plans, I wonder where our priorities lie. Our health care crisis is real, but it won’t be solved by providing expensive solutions that make access to our rural healthcare more scarce for the elderly folks who need it most.

One broker I talked to this week, who was trying to set up insurance for her client through the MNSURE site noted the difficulty and sluggishness. She further commented that the whole process was frustrating to the client who previously used MNCare and had been happy.

Lastly, I was blessed to be able to present to Mr. Brian Hurd’s class at the Mary of Lourdes Middle School. I had a chance to share the experiences in St. Paul and my enthusiasm for solving some of the difficult challenges we face.

My main message was be informed and active.

Cold water is a dangerous to late season boaters

As Minnesotans enjoy their last bit of time on water before the ice, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is warning boaters, paddlers and waterfowl hunters not to let their guard down.

Right now, water temperatures on Lake Minnetonka and the Saint Croix River are hovering around 40 degrees.

“Forty degrees is cold,” said Kara Owens, DNR boat and water safety specialist. “Cold water can prove dangerous, or even deadly, especially if people don’t consider the consequences of falling into frigid water this time of year.”

So far this year, 12 people have died in boating accidents in Minnesota, compared to 14 deaths this time last year.

One person has died during the late boating season (October to November), compared to four deaths this time last year.

“It’s more important than ever that every boater wears a life jacket every time they step on a boat,” said Owens.

She added, a life jacket will not only keep you afloat, but always keep you warm if you fall into cold water.

The DNR recommends these safety tips for late season boaters: • Wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket; even good swimmers need to wear one.

• Don’t go boating alone; boating safety increases with numbers.

• Keep an eye on the weather and go to shore if the wind picks up.

• If boat becomes swamped or capsizes, try to re-board and stay with the craft if possible and await rescue.

Minnesota’s firearms hunting season opens Saturday, Nov. 9.

That’s the word from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), whose biologists report deer populations are stable across much of the state.

“Minnesota’s deer population is largely stable in the southern half of the state because of mild winters and generally conservative deer management,” said Leslie McInenly, the DNR’s big game program leader. “Mild winters result in more survival of adults, more fawns being born, and more deer in the state’s fields and forests the following hunting season.”

Winter, which is a significant source of mortality in Minnesota deer, ranged from moderate to severe in northern Minnesota. As a result, permit area designations across most of northern Minnesota are either lottery or hunter choice.

Last year, Minnesota’s nearly 500,000 deer hunters harvested 186,000 deer. A similar harvest is expected this year.

McInenly said deer permit management designations that limit hunters to one, two or five deer largely are the same as last year. The limits reflect the department’s interest in rebuilding or maintaining the deer herd in certain portions of the state by managing the harvest.

Based on 2013 population estimates, almost 80 percent of permit areas are at population goal. Antlerless and bonus deer permit availability decreases as overly abundant populations are brought into line with department goals.

Minnesota’s deer harvest has varied widely over the past half century. In a historical context, too many deer were taken during the 1960s, forcing the closure of the deer season in 1971 and a rebuilding of the deer herd from the 1970s through the 1990s. The highest deer harvest occurred in 2003, when 290,000 deer were taken as part of an effort to reduce the deer herd. Today, the DNR manages the deer population based on goals established with public input.

sistent and moderate harvests are anticipated,” McInenly said. “That said, population goals in some places were established nearly 10 years ago and the DNR is initiating a public process to revisit goals for permit areas statewide during the next few years.”

The DNR will be working with hunters and other stakeholders this winter to evaluate deer population goals for southeastern Minnesota.

The firearms deer season concludes Sunday, Nov. 24, in Series 100 permit areas, which cover much of northeastern Minnesota. In Series 300 permit areas, which cover the southeastern corner of the state, the first season ends Sunday, Nov. 17, but a late season opens Saturday, Nov. 23, and concludes Sunday, Dec. 1. Firearms season ends Sunday, Nov. 17, in Series 200 permit areas, which cover the remainder of the state.

One lie that many socalled Christians even believe is that the Bible cannot be understood; that it is not worth reading or trying to grasp what is inside. Why then did Jesus say, ‘Let the children come to me.’? Why does Psalm 119:130 say, ‘The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.’? The Bible is most certainly meant for us to read and comprehend the message within it’s pages.

Minutes from the Final Assessment Hearing held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, October 8, 2013. Members present: Mayor Peterson, Jay Bartkowicz, Tim Grittner, and Jim Molitor.

Also present; Mike Rude, Roxanne Thompson, James Dickenson, and Brian Zapzalka. The hearing was called to order by Mayor Peterson at 6:30 p.m. and then Mayor Peterson turned the meeting over to City Engineer, Mike Rude.

Mike handed out the hearing format, and explained each topic.

Rude answered questions and concerns from council members.

The floor was opened to residents present and letters were read that were received about the water project assessments.

There will be an adjourned hearing on Tuesday, October 15 at 6:30 p.m. to go over assessments that were brought to the council’s attention this evening.

Mayor Peterson made a motion to close the hearing. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All voted in favor, motion carried.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held September 3, 2013 were read. Tim Grittner made a motion to accept the minutes as read. Jay Bartkowicz seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasurer report was given.

A motion was made by Tim Grittner and seconded by Jim Molitor to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mike Rude, city engineer, presented council with pay estimate #3 for $245,112.94 plus additional change order for $7535.70 for Larson Excavating. After discussion, Tim Grittner made a motion to approve pay estimate #3 with change order. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

An estimate from Tri-City Paving to repave the alley by the Mill was looked at and discussed. The purpose to repave would be to slope the alley toward the storm drain.

The cost estimate is $12,500.00.

Tim Grittner made a motion to hire Tri-City to repave this project. Jay Bartkowicz seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Water hook up charges were discussed. At present the fee to hook up to city water is $1500.00.

Levi Mullenkamp, Scout Leader, was present to ask council members if there would be city service projects that could be done by scouts seeking to earn service badges. It was suggested the scouts could repaint the three “Welcome to Swanville” signs as you enter the city limits. Levi will see what can be done with the fall weather permitting. Council will keep the scouts in mind for other projects.

Land use permits were looked at and discussed. Gene and Debbie Harthan would like to add onto their existing storage shed an 8’x12’ addition. This was approved by P & Z. St Peters Lutheran Church would like to add a 10’x8’ addition onto the dormer of the parish house.

After discussion, Mayor Peterson made a motion to approve both land use permits. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

It was brought to council’s attention that the utility bill at 312 DeGraff is outstanding from previous owner. Under the circumstances that the previous owners were contract for deed, Jim Molitor made a motion to take off $200.00 to drop the bill to $252.24 to be paid by property owner. And any delinquent utility bills that are not paid in full by November 18, 2013 will be put on property taxes. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Mayor Peterson stated the city will have to be more strict with water turn offs because of unpaid utility bills.

City maintenance man presented to the council the need to purchase a locator for water service lines. The cost is about $3708.00.

Jim Molitor made a motion to purchase the locator. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the Council were furnished with a listing. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the claims. Jay Bartkowicz seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next monthly meeting will be held November 5, 2013 at 7:30 p.m..

There being no further business, a motion was made by Mayor Peterson and seconded by Tim Grittner to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

give an account of how we lived the life that He gave us. The prophets throughout the Scriptures were inspired by God to warn mankind to turn away from their sinful ways and repent. The people that listened to the prophets turned away from their sins and repented. The ones that chose to ignore the warnings faced unimaginable and dreadful consequences. The prophets did not judge the people, but they pointed them to the Truth and to the One who is the Judge, God Almighty.

Professing Christians today seem to think that they are responsible to judge the sinners in the world. They seem to forget that they are sinners saved by Grace. They stand in the high places and look down in judgement on those who are not as good as they are. They give a bad taste to the true message of Christ because their intellect is more important to their prideful lifestyles than the souls that the Lord is concerned about.

In fact, the Lord God loves the human race so much that He sent His one and only Son to atone for their sins with His own blood.

Gandhi, who taught non-violence, but represents a non-Christian view, is known for the quote that he stated while talking to a Christian leader, “I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” I believe this sums up the mass of confusion in the secular world today about True Christianity. If Christ- followers do not truly follow Christ’s teachings, we give a mixed up message about our Faith.

The Word of God never condones sinful behaviors. In fact it is very clear that sin leads to death- thus the reason we need a Savior. We do need to stand up for what is right and against what is wrong in God’s eyes or we will be guilty of passiveness or what I would call wishy washy belief. Using good judgement, however is different than being judgmental. We need to hold each other accountable, but we are not to be judgmental.

As followers of Christ, it is a responsibility to point those around us to the Judge of our hearts and our souls.

The time of Grace is now. We need to be showing that Grace to the world that is confused and loving them as Jesus loves

In John 8:1-11, the religious leaders were about to throw stones at a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. Jesus stopped them from stoning her not because He condoned her sin, but to show the religious people that they are not without sin, so they could not throw the stones. He then told the woman that He did not condemn her, but she was to ‘go and leave her life of sin.’

I believe this is contributing to the confusion in our society today. We are not telling people to leave their life of sin. We are sending the message that they can continue and still be okay. We make excuses for them because of their life circumstances, and we enable them to stay stuck in their lifestyles so they see no need to change. This is a lie. We all have a sin disease that leads to death.

The only antedote is the blood of Christ.

1 John 3:8 says that ‘the reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. No one who has been born of God will continue to sin.’ We should never give the false idea that it is okay to keep living in the sin that is entangling and enslaving them.

We are all given the free will to do as we please. If we do not hold the Scriptures as the absolute Truth, we will be part of the world that is led astray and we will lead others astray as well. This is part of the devil’s plan. He delights in using God’s people to do his dirty work.

We should all take a look in the mirror and make sure that we are not being used to turn people away from Jesus, the Savior of the world.

I have seen many people get wounded by people who claim to be Christians.

If you fall in to the self-righteous, religious, judgmental category, I would hope that you would stand a little bit longer in the mirror before the Lord. He is the Judge of you as well. And if you are guilty of turning people away from the Truth of Jesus because of your behavior, repent and start loving the sinful generation around you and ‘go and sin no more’.

By Larissa Brune, 4-H Program Coordinator The 2013 Todd County 4-H Achievement Program was held Friday evening, November 1, at the Long Prairie-Grey Eagle High School. More than 175 area organizations, businesses and individuals sponsored numerous awards to deserving 4-H’ers and their leaders.

Burtrum Boosters 4-H Club received honors. The clubs received cash awards from area businesses for their achievements this past year.

4-H pins were given to 4-H leaders and members for completion of varying years of service.

Gold Clover Pin Awards were presented to Shirley Hulinsky, Burtrum Boosters/Highland, and Ann Peterson, Burtrum Boosters/Highland, for 10 years of adult leadership.

Harvested deer can be donated for distribution to food shelves Deer donated to food shelves can be processed at no cost to hunters thanks to a program coordinated by the Minnesota departments of natural resources and agriculture. Prior to 2007, hunters could donate deer to food shelves but had to pay processing costs.

“The venison donation program has multiple benefits,” said Leslie McInenly, big game program leader for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). “In portions of the state, hunters are encouraged to harvest multiple deer, the program provides hunters an avenue to donate the extra deer they harvest without having to pay processing costs.

Demand for food assistance also has been increasing in recent years across Minnesota, and this is a great opportunity to provide locally-sourced meat to families in need.”

To donate a deer, hunters will need to adhere to the following guidelines: • Only whole carcasses with the hide on can be donated because processors will not accept cut and wrapped meat or portions of carcasses.

• Information such as permit area of harvest and the DNR number will be collected for tracking purposes.

• Processors can only accept carcasses for donation that are free from signs of illness, free of visible decomposition or contamination and properly identified with a Minnesota DNR registration tag.

• Processors will reject deer for the donation program that appear to have been mishandled in any way.

A Graveyard Funny

A daring vacationer in Vienna is walking through a graveyard on Halloween when all of a sudden she hears music. No one is around, so she starts looking to see where it’s coming from. She finally locates the source and finds it is coming from a grave with a headstone that reads, “Ludwig van Beethoven.” Then she realizes that the music is the Ninth Symphony and it is being played backward.

Puzzled, she leaves the graveyard and persuades a friend to return with her. By the time they arrive back at the grave, the music has changed. This time it is the Seventh Symphony, but it is also being played backward.

Curious, the ladies agree to consult a music scholar. When they return with the expert, the Fifth Symphony is playing and the expert concludes that the symphonies are in fact being played in reverse order.

By the next day the word spread and a huge group gathered around the grave to hear the Second Symphony being played backward. Just then the
