Pressure.

The very word strikes fear into many people.

Winners thrive on pressure while losers fear it.

What is pressure?

My definition of pressure is when you absolutely have to do something you are not prepared to do. If you have to kick a field goal to win a big football game and you aren’t prepared to do it, you are going to be nervous. You’re going to feel pressure. But if you’ve really prepared for it, you can’t wait to show people how good you are.

That’s why winners look forward to pressure. It brings out their best.

People who welcome pressure are more successful.

Conversely, pressure can cripple you if you’re not prepared. When pressure is self-inflicted, it can control you.

Pressure is an attitude. It’s 10 percent of what is happening and 90 percent of how you handle it.

Don’t be like by friend Mark. They used to call him “Jigsaw” because every time he was faced with a problem, he went to pieces.

Tennis pro Billie Jean King said: “Match point is a love-hate relationship.

The torment of ‘Oh, God, what am I doing here?’ and ‘This is it! This is what I’ve been working for.’ I know this is why I paid the price. This is what it’s all about if you want to be a champion.

The challenge of that moment. Match point!”

To be a champion in sports or business or any phase of life, you have to learn to handle pressure. If you’ve prepared mentally and physically, you don’t have to worry.

During my corporate speeches I repeat one of my favorite aphorisms: “Practice makes perfect … not true. You have to add one word … Perfect practice makes perfect.” I wish that I had coined that phrase but I didn’t. Legendary pro football coach Vince Lombardi did.

This is why over my lifetime I’ve had numerous coaches to help me develop whatever natural talent I have. I’ve had coaches for public speaking, writing, ideas/creativity, running marathons, golf, tennis, water skiing, swimming, bowling, basketball, to name only a few.

I’ve even had a dance coach … thanks to my wife.

Why do I have all of these coaches?

Because whatever my God-given talent is, whatever my God-given potential is … That’s it. I can’t do any better. But I will still try to do the best I can, with the best help I can get.

If I have a project, I’ll have a time and action calendar; get the best coaching I can find; and then try my hardest and focus and give it all I’ve got.

Should I feel pressure? Yes, but I will use it to my advantage. I’m as prepared as I can be. I can’t do anymore.

Research shows that one of the key ways to deal with pressure is to have a feeling of control. And what better way to be in control than to be prepared and experienced.

Take NASA as an example. NASA puts all its astronauts through situations they might encounter in space. Who can even begin to think about what might happen thousands of miles in space?

The moon is more than 238,000 miles away from earth! Pressure? You better believe it. But they are prepared. If you are familiar with what is happening to and around you, you will have a powerful feeling of confidence.

Let’s face it. No matter what, you are going to be in pressure situations.

Harvey Mackay continued from page 2 No one is free from pressure. It can’t be avoided. Don’t panic. Don’t lose your cool. Concentrate. Return to fundamentals. Get your confidence back.

As simple as it sounds, try taking deep, relaxing breaths. Pressure often causes people to breathe more quickly and shallow. Deep breathing allows oxygen to more efficiently enter the blood and the brain, which will help you think more clearly.

Don’t stress over what you cannot control. Everybody gets a curveball now and then. Shake it off the best you can.

Be flexible and appreciate adversity. It will help you grow stronger.

As Jacques Plante, a former professional hockey goalie for the Montreal Canadians once said, “How would you like it in your job if every time you made a small mistake, a red light went on over your desk and fifteen thousand people stood up and yelled at you?”

Try to relax. Things could be worse.

USA Community Choir Veterans Day Program November 11 The USA Community Choir will be presenting a Veterans Day Program titled “Anzio, Normandy and Saipan”.

The concert will be Veterans’ Day November 11 at the Swanville High School at 7:30 p.m. The program will include the choir, The Blivet Players, The USA Honor Squad and will feature Tom Speckhard as soloist.

The program will include songs from the Anzio, Saipan and Normandy

Obituaries Jerome L. Rosen

Jerome L. Rosen, age 92 of Freeport, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m.

Monday, November 3rd at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B officiating and Rev. Bradley Jenniges O.S.B. concelebrating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Jerome Leonard Rosen was born October 16, 1922 in Albany Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Leonard and Maria (Loch) Rosen. On September 30, 1947 he married MaryEllen Stroeing at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. The couple farmed east of Freeport; retiring in 1986 and then moving to town. After retirement, he worked for Jim Hiltner Construction in Freeport.

Jerome helped the City of Freeport with city maintenance and volunteered his time to set up tables for many funeral lunches at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Jerome enjoyed farming, driving tractor, fishing, playing cards, woodworking, playing BINGO, dancing to Old-Time Music, tying quilts, and braiding coat hangers with yarn.

Jerome was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport where he was an usher for many years. He also was a member of St. Joseph’s Men’s Society, St. Peter’s Court 1556 Catholic Order of Foresters, and St. Mary’s Mission Group.

Survivors include his children, Warren (Janet) Rosen of Vancouver, WA, Dianne (Mayers) (Richard) Schlichtmann of Hillsboro, ND, Marilyn (Darell) Wall of Forbes, ND, Eileen Rosen of Freeport, and Richard (MaryJane) Rosen of Albany; 22 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

Jerome was preceded in death by his parents; wife, MaryEllen Rosen on August 5, 2014; son-in-law, Ralph Mayers March 2, 1978; sisters, Margaret Goebel, Juletta Goebel, Theresa Goebel, and Sybella Krupa; and brothers, Frank, Ted, Ben, and Albin Rosen.

Serving as casket bearers were Craig Mayers, John Wall, Russel Schleppenbach, Ryan Schleppenbach, Eric Rosen, Amanda Douvier, Leah Christopherson, and Douglas Blumer. Cross bearer was Natasha Penner, scripture bearer was Janeen Slegh, and tractor bearer was Aaron Rosen. Readers were Darren Mayers and Pamela Henningson.

Gift bearers were Sue Urlacher, Neil Rosen, and Melanie Rosen. Eucharistic Ministers were Darell and Marilyn Wall. Honorary bearers were grandchildren, Mike, Kateri, April, Justina, Luke, and Nick, nephews, Harold, Melvin, and Ronald Goebel and Don Rosen, and St. Joseph’s Men’s Society.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Freeport.

Melrose for four years before he started farming in Grey Eagle. After retiring from farming, he continued to live on his farm and most recently resided at Fairway Pines in Sauk Centre.

Bernie was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle and the Schanharr-Otte VFW Post 7050. Bernie will always be remembered as having a smile on his face.

Roman R. Bruggenthies Roman R. Bruggenthies age 81 of Grey Eagle, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 7 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ron Dockendorf officiating. Interment will be at Morningside Memorial Gardens in Coon Rapids following the lunch.

Alma was born January 14, 1936 in Freeborn to John and Theresa (Tennis) Schmidt. After graduating from Kimball High School she married her high school sweetheart, Allen Dahlin, on August 1, 1953 at St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Luxemburg. Alma started working as a Bookkeeper in the grocery business when her husband Al purchased Dahlin’s Supermarket in Avon. The couple was proud

She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Clarence A. Groetsch, 91, of Albany will be at 12 noon on Thursday, November 6, 2014 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Father Cletus Connors, OSB will officiate and entombment will take place in the parish cemetery. Clarence passed away peacefully at his home Sunday. There will be a visitation after 11:00 AM on Thursday at Seven Dolors.

Clarence was born May 13, 1923 to Anton and Susan (Kammers) Groetsch in Albany on a family farm. He grew up in the area with his nine siblings. Clarence had to grow up quickly after the death of his father and learned the ways of the farm. He married Rita Poxleitner on June 30, 1948 and together they raised eight children and cultivated a sense of family. Clarence was a proud and independent farmer who loved John Deere equipment, enjoyed checking his crops, and loved his family. He has left a strong family legacy after caring so long for his children, who he always made sure were supported, cared for, and loved. Clarence was often seen driving around to check up on his children and is described as being

compassionate and loving. He was an honest and reliable man who valued education and liked to read. Clarence enjoyed going up north to the cabin, and enjoyed trapshooting, fishing, and hunting. He had a sharp mind, and always knew what was going on with his family. Clarence could often be found at Paul’s Pair-A-Dice having a Diet Pepsi, visiting with friends, and playing cards. He enjoyed talking politics and was concerned about world affairs. He was an active member of Seven Dolors Church and the Albany Sportsman Club, to whom he donated land.

Clarence is survived by his children Dianne Rademacher, Avon; Linda (Duane) Herkenhoff, Freeport; Thomas (Mary Lou) Groetsch, Avon; Charlie (Cynthia) Groetsch, Vadnais Heights; Gary (Darlene) Groetsch, Albany; Jim (Lisa) Groetsch, Albany; Steven (Lisa) Groetsch, Albany; Michael (Dana) Groetsch, Avon; his siblings Lucille Hondl, Albany; Walter Groetsch, Avon; Lorraine Voit, Albany; 20 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and many other family and friends.

The Grey Eagle Senior Center had their annual Halloween/Pot Luck Party, on Wednesday, Oct. 29th. There were lots of giggles and laughter, as you can imagine, looking at this picture. 23 people attended with 13 of them in costume.

As I prepare for this year’s hunt, I am fully aware that I, like many other hunters, am less likely to bag a deer than in recent years. In fact, the lowest deer harvest in decades is expected under a harvest plan designed to rebuild the herd. We are conserving deer – does in particular -- this season to improve deer numbers in the future.

Overall, most hunters in the state will be able to harvest only one deer. In much of northeastern Minnesota, where For All Your Cabinet Needs...

toll on deer, hunters will only be able to shoot bucks. For me, someone who loves to eat venison, it will be tough to let a big doe go by. But, the deer herd can rebound quickly, and passing on the doe this year will contribute to a much larger herd next year.

For much of the recent past, the deer herd has been at historic high levels, and harvests have reflected that. In the past five years, and under a plan devised with hunter and landowner input, the DNR deliberately reduced the size of the herd.

Today’s populations are close to the goal numbers we set some six years ago. The severe winters of the last two years have driven herd levels lower than where we’d wanted them.

Over the past two years, we at the DNR have heard from hunters that deer numbers are now too low and that efforts to reduce deer numbers have gone too far. In listening sessions and in other ways, many have said it is time to rebuild the population. We agree.

So, this will be a conservative deer season with more protections for antlerless deer throughout much of the state.

The harvest could be as low as 120,000.

That’s not many deer compared to recent harvests that have approached 200,000 animals. But, because they respond quickly, we will likely see some liberalization even next year.

Meanwhile, do know the DNR needs your help in re-evaluating deer population goals across the state. This goal-setting process began in 2012 in southern Minnesota and moved to southeastern Minnesota in 2014. Goals for the remainder of Minnesota will be set in 2015 and 2016. We want to hear from you.

How can you get involved? Starting in January, you can send in comments or attend public meetings to discuss deer populations in the region or area where you hunt, live or work. You’ll also be able to provide input through a questionnaire designed for the process. You can even volunteer to serve on one of five advisory teams that will recommend deer population goals for each goal-setting block. You can nominate yourself through Monday, Nov. 17. Even with the reduced harvest, I am really looking forward to the deer opener. I will be spending much of the season with my son, Hunter. He’s a good partner. Like me, he enjoys the sights and sounds of the woods, likes sharing stories at the end of the day, and really likes the report of his trusty .308.

It’s possible we’ll see some antlerless deer we can’t harvest, like many other folks. And that’s OK. It’s OK because we are rebuilding the herd. And it’s OK because for us success is not only about filling tags. It’s also about spending time together, being hunters, enjoying the outdoors and building the memories. We’ll have a good time together. And I expect even better times ahead.

CentraCare Health Takes Measures to Protect its Patients, Employees Against Influenza CentraCare Health has implemented an influenza vaccination campaign for the 2014-2015 influenza season that requires all health care workers to be vaccinated or to wear a mask when in areas where patients may be present.

The Centers for Disease Control and Minnesota Department of Health support universal influenza vaccination of health care workers because it has proven to decrease the risk of illness and death related to influenza. The single best way to prevent influenza is to get vaccinated each year.

“We are committed to improving patient safety and quality of care, par-

ticularly infection prevention in the health care setting during the influenza season,” said Thomas Schrup, MD, Medical Director of Provider Relations for CentraCare Clinic. “As a health care organization and as a matter of public health, we must lead by example to prevent the spread of influenza.”

Every year, influenza kills 250,000 to 500,000 people worldwide. In 2011, influenza and pneumonia were the eighth leading causes of death with more than 50,000 people in the United States dying due to complications related to influenza and pneumonia.

-Paul Dear Paul, If you want her to pay for college, then, as her dad, you have to coach her on how she’s supposed to come up with the money and manage it properly. She’s already behind the eight ball because it sounds like you didn’t teach her the correlation between work and money earlier. So, you’re going to have to get real busy, real fast unless you want her to be drowning in debt when she graduates.

I think you owe her a leg up at this point. Twelve thousand dollars doesn’t just magically appear in an 18-yearold’s hands. I’m perfectly okay with kids working through college and parents cracking the whip when it comes to acting responsibly. But if you expect them to pay for it, you first have to show them how to do that. Otherwise, they’re going to hit the default button and wind up $50,000 in debt when they graduate.

That’s a really bad plan!

If you have some money, I think you should help her along while teaching her how to make money, save and budget.

Then, maybe she’ll be prepared to pay for her last couple of years with some good, hard work!

When you’re behind on payments you are, by definition, in default. Still, I think you should stay right where you are for now, and keep paying your rent on time like normal. Keep the lines of communication open with your landlord, too. I’d also contact Chase, and tell them about your situation in this house. Ask them to keep you informed about what’s happening with the property, so that you’ll have time to formulate a plan and find a new place to live if the house goes into foreclosure.

Chances are they’ll give you at least 30 days to move out if a foreclosure occurs. You probably won’t have to pay anything to the bank afterward, so you may get to sit there rent-free even longer while they sort out everything.

Considering the fact that you don’t have money wrapped up in a deposit or a lease hanging over your head, there’s really not a lot of risk for you here. Your landlord is still providing the home, and the truth is that foreclosures — if it comes to that — generally take a while to complete in Florida.

You might keep an eye out for other properties in the weeks ahead, but other than that, as a renter, you’re in pretty good shape under the circumstances.

U of M Extension Offers Food Safety for Food Service Classes in St. Cloud University of Minnesota Extension is offering three courses to help food service establishments meet the educational requirements for Certified Food Managers.

The initial certification course, using the ServSafe® Curriculum, will be offered on Thursday, December 11, 2014 at the Midtown Office Complex in St. Cloud.

The class will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with the exam following at 4:30 p.m. Participants must attend all day to be eligible to take the certification exam. Stearns History Museum Appoints Jim Davis Chief Executive Officer Jim Davis, a long-time community leader and retired Vice President for Corporate Services at CentraCare Health System, has been named Chief Executive Officer of the Stearns History Museum.

Tim Hoheisel has resigned his position at the Museum.

In addition to the appointment of Davis as Chief Executive Officer, the Museum’s board also named Ann Meline its Chief Operating Officer. Meline, who has been with the Museum since 1985 serving as its Deputy Director, will manage day-to-day operations.

DNR urges hunters to think safety 24/7

Another season of hunting is here, and along with it comes all the responsibilities to ensure a safe hunt, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said.

Taking the best shot at the right time ensures a safe and productive hunt.

“Until you are completely sure of your target, don’t even raise your gun,” said Acting Capt. Jon Paurus, DNR enforcement education program coordinator. “Always make certain that you have a safe backstop or background since the bullet will likely pass through the primary target and strike whatever is behind it.”

Hunters also need to keep track of buildings, roadways, and other hunters.

Don’t ever shoot at sound---it may be a child, a hunter, or an innocent bystander. When hunting, know the identifying features of the game you’re after. Never shoot at flat, hard surfaces, such as water, rocks, or steel because of ricochets.

“Be certain of your target and your line of fire,” Paurus said. “Keep your trigger finger off the trigger and outside the trigger guard until ready to shoot.”
