Experience is a tough teacher -By Harvey Mackay Have you ever heard the expression “seeing the elephant?”

It’s an expression that came out of the California gold rush. Those planning to go west in search of gold announced to their friends that they were “going to see the elephant.”

Those who turned back discouraged claimed they had seen “the elephant’s tracks” or the “elephant’s tail,” and admitted that view was sufficient.

The Oxford Dictionary defines it this way: “to see the elephant: to see life, the world, or the sights; to get experience of life, to gain knowledge by experience.”

Here’s my take on it: To know the road ahead, ask those coming back. Or take the road yourself and see what you learn. Of course, it’s a lot easier to learn from others’ mistakes and often much less costly.

But for most of us, we have to experience things for ourselves. When the outcome is good, we call it a successful experience. But when things don’t work out as we hoped, we call it a “learning” experience.

Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes. It is an expensive teacher sometimes. Experience is the dividend you get from your mistakes. Reportedly, Thomas Watson, the founder and first president of IBM, was asked if he was going to fire an employee who made a mistake that cost IBM $600,000.

He said, “No, I just spent $600,000 training him. Why would I want somebody else to hire his experience?”

as saying: “Double your rate of failure ...

Failure is a teacher – a harsh one, perhaps, but the best ... That’s what I have to do when an idea backfires or a sales program fails. You’ve got to put failure to work for you ... you can be discouraged by failure or you can learn from it. So go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because that’s where you will find success. On the far side of failure.”

I’ve always said if you want to triple your success ratio, you have to triple your failure rate! I would submit that we learn as much from our failures as we learn from our successes. That may sting a bit, but there is no free tuition in the school of experience.

Every time you graduate from the school of experience someone thinks up a new course.

Consider the man who asked his boss why three other people were promoted past him. He said, “Boss, I have 20 years of experience in this job.”

The boss replied, “No, you don’t have 20 years of experience. You have one year of experience 20 times. You’ve been making the same mistakes since you first started.”

Some learn from experience. Others never recover from it.

And the most important lesson we should learn from our experiences is that we can move past failures and put the errors to work, preparing us for better days ahead.

Realize that the lessons learned are valuable, even if they are embarrassing or depressing or seemingly insurmountable. Giving in to failure is letting the bad experience win.

As tempting as it can be to want to forget about bad experiences, don’t. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. The past should be a guidepost, not a hitching post. Use those difficult lessons to demonstrate your resilience and ability to learn from your mistakes.

Even better, learn from the mistakes of others. I strongly encourage newcomers

to connect with a mentor and extend that advice to folks at all stages of their careers.

The experience you can absorb is priceless, and the guidance that might prevent you from having too many bad experiences is invaluable.

The promoter for a local boxing champion arranged a match with an opponent he had never seen. He had simply asked for an experienced fighter. On the day of the fight, a middle-aged man with a crooked nose, a punch-drunk manner and two huge cauliflower ears arrived in the dressing room. The promoter was aghast.

“I asked for an experienced fighter,” he complained, “but not a damaged one.”

Experience is a good teacher, but a hard one. It gives the test first and the lesson afterward. Experience enables you to recognize a mistake every time you repeat it.

Mackay’s Moral: There is no free tuition in the school of experience.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Rambling

Sometimes my readers call to tell about things from their past that would probably seem rather silly today, but in some cases they could be considered unusual years ago.

In those days it was considered news if someone went to visit another and the newspaper carried a short story about “who poured” coffee. In other cases the stories simply stated that someone visited someone else and they had a wonderful visit. Ever see this kind of news in the paper today?

If you listened to the radio in the past it usually was to get the news. The news was actually reporting news happenings and a weather report. You would hear of accidents, births, deaths, road closures and what it was thought the weather would be tomorrow. The news casters told “just the facts,” like Joe Friday would say, without adding their own or the networks political slant to the stories. You have to miss that!

The rural inhabitants were limited to their visits with neighbors, the people at church, the relatives, the fellow at the mill and the guy who delivered gas to your storage tank. Many of these conversations involved the every-day life experiences of the participants and the number of animals or pounds of milk that the farm produced.

It’s also possible that some home cures or ideas that were a part of their lives were mentioned. I don’t remember, but I bet that since healthcare was not such a big part of the lives of the older people, they didn’t find it necessary to talk about their operations, pills and any other upcoming procedures.

They probably complained about their lumbago, difficulty getting their wind and that darn arthritis, but that was usually only to be part of the conversation.

They invented some solutions to everyday problems. If you had a cold, you ate chicken soup, took a shot of peppermint or blackberry brandy. My Grandfather would swallow kerosene for a sore throat. I need to mention here that after one cure, you were careful to avoid any mention that your throat was sore. Mustard mixed with goose grease and applied to your chest actually made one breath easier. Of course, everyone has had experience with Vicks.

It has been reported that strawberry pop will cure canker sores. Also, a guaranteed method to determine if the watermelon was ripe was to place a bristle from a broom on the watermelon crosswise and if the bristle turned to lengthwise the melon was ripe.

One fellow told of the way he and his brother would get a lesser punishment was to have mother grab their right arm with her right arm and run in a circle away from the stick. Her left swing was less effective and running in that direction reduced the severity of the blows. I don’t know if you would call that idea engineering, common sense or just simply butt preservation.

I don’t know how many of you remember taking your pennies and nickels to school to buy stamps. They were attached to pages in a book and when the book was full it represented $18.75, which was then traded in at the bank for a war bond. Everyone tried to do their part to support the war effort.

I am guilty of rambling while writing this story, but I felt these ideas would be interesting.

Swanville Junior High Student of the Month

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the October grades 7-9 student of the month, ninth grade student Lexi Hanson. Lexi is the daughter of Cassie and Kyle Hanson.

She enjoys volleyball, softball, trap shooting, farming, hunting and fishing. She plans to go to college to attain her RN license. Lexi’s favorite thing about school is learning as she is working very hard to get into a college to become an RN. Her advice to other students is “to keep trying and keep pushing yourself

because hard work pays off.”

Outside of school she donates her time by selling raffle tickets for trap shooting and Swanville Athletics. She is consistently on the A and B Honor Roll. She is also the Vice President of the freshman class. Lexi plays softball and volleyball, and shoots trap. She is also in band.

Mathematics teacher Liza Hasse states, “Lexi is a fun-loving young lady who brightens my day everyday. She gets so excited about the little things in life and shares that joy with others. Lexi also works very hard in class to understand the concepts. She asks questions for understanding and really wants to learn and do well. Lexi is respectful to others around her and will go out of her way to do something nice. Congratulations in being chosen Student of the Month Lexi, you deserve it.”

Mary Saetre, age 72 of Long Prairie passed away unexpectedly at the Perham Health hospital in Perham, MN on Friday, October 30, 2020.

Mary Jane Conaway was born on June 1, 1948 in Richfield, MN to Vernon and Dorothy (Adelmann) Conaway. As a young woman Mary married Gaylord Saetre at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Richfield, MN on June 27, 1970 and this union would last for over half a century. They raised two children, a son Eric and a daughter, Sarah. The Saetre’s lived in Long Prairie for over forty years where Gaylord served as Todd County Attorney.

Mary worked several years at American Heritage Bank and was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and served as a Eucharistic Minister. For many years during the winter months, Mary and Gaylord enjoyed the warmth of Lake Havasu, AZ and had just recently moved to Perham, MN to be closer to family.

Mary was a kind and gracious hostess, whether out in public or simply serving guests in her home. She loved to entertain friends and family and greeted everyone she met with a smile. She was an avid Bridge player who also loved to cook, take long walks and socialize.

She liked to travel, whether near or far, but especially enjoyed taking short Casino trips with her girlfriends and her many trips to the cabin with her “BAF” girls. What brought her most happiness however, was just being with her family. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy and she took great pleasure in spoiling them.

Mary will live on in the hearts of her family, especially her husband, Gaylord Saetre of Perham; a son, Eric (Lindsey) Saetre of Duluth, MN and a daughter, Sarah (Loren) Urbach of Perham, MN; 2 grandchildren, Seth and Leah Urbach; her siblings, Vern (MarySue) Conaway of VA, Dee Dee (Jim) Broveleit of Richfield, MN and Don (Sherry) Conaway of Champlin, MN; several nieces and nephews.

Mary is preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy Conaway and a sister, Sue Conlin.

A Mass of Resurrection will be held for Mary on Friday, November 6, 2020 at 11:00 am at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie with Fr. Omar Guanchez officiating. Musician is Duane Brieter. Visitation will take place starting at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Long Prairie, MN. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date. Laura Riedel, age 90 of Long Prairie returned to her Savior late Friday evening, Oct. 30, 2020 from the Centra Care Health in Long Prairie, MN. She was born on the first day of September in 1930 in Eagle Bend, MN to parents, Louis and Lillie (Larson) Dent. Laura Edna was one of their five children. She graduated from Eagle Bend High School in 1948. On September 21, 1949 Laura married the love of her life, Harold Riedel (on his twenty-sixth birthday) also in Eagle Bend. After a time living in Chicago, they returned to Minnesota and settled in Coon Rapids and later Elk River while running a business. After returning to Todd County, they lived for a time in Clotho, MN and then Long Prairie where they ran a shoe repair business. They were members of Trinity Lutheran Church where Laura enjoyed attending many Bible studies over the years. She knew the gospels well. She also was busy raising their six children and attending their many activities. Laura loved to take them on yearly family camp-outs and take them fishing. Going to dances and listening to the music Harold played. She loved to work out in her flower garden. During the winter months she kept busy quilt-tying mission quilts at church, coloring art projects and solving puzzles. She was very proud of her family and especially loved to spoil her grand and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, August (Marsha) Riedel of Clarissa, Virignia (Brad) Schoeder of Sun City, AZ, Patty (Jim) Ostendorf and Marchell (Blair) Anderson, all of Long Prairie, Debra Prill of Little Falls and Mark (Tina) Riedel of Long Prairie; 17 grandchildren and 42 great grandchildren; siblings, Elaine Clementson of Long Prairie, Louis (Darlene) Dent, Jr. of Wyoming and Lloyd (Bert) Dent of Mansfield, OH; many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harold in 2014, 2 great granchildren, Kylee Leagjeld and Tyler Thom and a brother, Glenn Dent.

The public is invited to a graveside service on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 2 pm at the Trinity Cemetery in Long Prairie with Rev. Noah Wehrspann officiating. Interment is at the cemetery following the service with honorary pallbearers by her granddaughters, Kami Leagjeld, Shannon Douvier, Rachel Sullivan, Amy Brichacek, Corinne Nei, Angela Feigum, Misty Baker, Wendy Browen, Kayla Quistorff. Active bearers are grandsons, Adam & Lance Riedel, Jeremy Schoeder, Otis Ostendorf, Stacy Riedel, Amos Ostendorf, Andrew Prill and Cody Riedel.

Michael “Mike” A. Nelson Lorraine B. Barthel

Mike A. Nelson, 51 year old resident of Swanville, MN, passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2020 at his residence. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, November 5, 2020 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN with Rev. Keith Thompson officiating. Burial will take place in Bearhead Cemetery in Pillsbury, MN. A visitation will be held from 10-11 A.M. on Thursday at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. There will be a luncheon and celebration of life for Mike to follow the burial at the Sobieski Community Center.

Mike was born on August 21, 1969 in St. Paul, MN to Roger and Diane (Sharon) Nelson. He attended school in Royalton, MN where he graduated with the Class of 1987.

While in High School, Mike participated in FFA and he competed in the state conference.

Mike was united in marriage to Lisa Gradin on February 10, 2013 in Swanville, MN. He was a self-employed carpenter for many years doing roofing, siding and other carpentry work. Mike enjoyed collecting antiques, guns and doing woodworking. He was an avid outdoorsman that found time to hunt wild game and agates. Mike loved taking trips to the North Shore and was a history trivia buff. He was a member of the Sobieski Lions Club and always enjoyed a good cocktail. Mike was an amazing grandfather and will be forever missed by many.

Mike is survived by wife, Lisa Nelson of Swanville, MN; parents, Roger and Diane Nelson of Little Falls, MN; children, Meghan (Todd) Waldoch of Cushing, MN, Maranda Nelson of Royalton, MN and Mitchell Nelson of Fort Ripley, MN; step-children, Jennifer (Myron) Kottschade of Burtrum, MN and Brittney Walter of Swanville, MN; grandchildren, Drake Waldoch, Lillian Waldoch, Mack Kottschade, and Mason Kottschade; sister, Darla (Frank Sterzinger) Nelson of Eagan, MN; previous wife, Vicki Johnston of St. Joseph, MN; nephew, Trevor Sterzinger; and beloved dog, Felina.

Mike was preceded in death by grandparents, Bud & Lorraine Sharon and Wilbur & Alice Nelson and step-son, Matthew Walter.

DeLaine A. Friedrichs

DeLaine A. Friedrichs, age 90 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 2, 2020 at Fairway Pines Assisted Living in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 6 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Jeremy Theis officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery. There will be no visitation prior to the service.

DeLaine Ann Schwanke was born November 19, 1929 in Grey Eagle, Minnesota to Carl and Anna (Bense) Schwanke.

She married Levern “Vern” Friedrichs on September 20, 1950 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. The couple farmed near Grey Eagle until retiring in 1991 and moving to Sauk Lake. DeLaine also worked at Hart Press in Long Prairie for many years.

DeLaine was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre and the Christian Mothers.

Survivors include her sister, Delores Becker of Long Prairie; and niece and nephews, Beverly (Lowell) Dugan, David (Jayme) Becker, and Mark (Donna) Becker.

DeLaine was preceded in death by her husband, Levern “Vern” Friedrichs on June 20, 2009; parents; and brother-in-law, Leo Becker.

Memorials are preferred to CentraCare Health Care Center or St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.

Lorraine B. Barthel, 92 year old resident of Swanville, MN, passed away Friday, October 30, 2020, at her residence. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, November 6, 2020, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN, with Pastor Kevin Zellers officiating. A visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M.-11:00 A.M. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville. Burial will take place in Springbrook Cemetery following the funeral.

Lorraine Bernice Schneider was born to the late Frank and Emma (Rahn) Schneider on February 7, 1928, in Little Falls, MN. Growing up, she attended country school by Swanville. Lorraine was united into marriage to Raymond Barthel on December 11, 1945.

She worked various jobs such as the Swanville Locker Plant, Gessell Turkey Farms, and was a homemaker to her 11 children. Lorraine loved the casino, crossword puzzles, flowers, birds, bingo, lottery tickets, visits from the grandkids and great-grandkids, baking, and Christmas time so she could make donuts for all 11 kids.

Lorraine is survived by sons, Michael (Shelley) Barthel, Curtis Barthel, Dale (Jackie) Barthel, Bruce (Jeanette) Barthel, David (Kathy) Barthel; daughters, Mary (Jim) Rocheleau, Brenda (Jeff) Baum, Jeanette (Clarence) Podraza, Sandy Barthel & Richard Mortenson, Sharon (Stan) Miller, and Betty (Larry) Loven; 33 grandchildren and 53 greatgrandchildren.

Lorraine was preceded in death by husband, Raymond Barthel; parents, Frank & Emma Schneider; granddaughter Tina Podraza; and grandson, Jimmy “James” Stout.

Arnold “Arnie” Rocholl

Rev. Arnold “Arnie” C. Rocholl, Jr., 95 of Long Prairie, passed away Sunday, October 25, 2020 at his home in the Meadow Place Assisted Living in Long Prairie. There will be a private graveside service with a memorial scheduled at a future date.

Arnie was born March 2, 1925 to Arnold Sr. and Winifred (Ward) Rocholl in Detroit MI. He graduated from Henry Ford Trade School during WWII and immediately began teaching “Rosie Riveters”, building B24 Bombers at Ford Motor Company. After the war Arnie attended Northwestern Bible College, during which time he became an original staff member for KTIS Radio. That is also where he met Anne Kiemele, his wife of nearly 70 years, the love of his life. The couple were married on June 8, 1951.

Together they served in churches throughout central Minnesota communities, including Anoka, Onamia, Isle, Aitkin, and Storden. Even in retirement in 1992 to Long Prairie, he continued serving as an interim pastor for many years. Arnie had joy in working with his hands. Throughout his life he often worked bi-vocationally where he exercised his love of carpentry and painting.

He even built their family home, much of which was constructed from lumber logged from their own property. Bowling and fishing were hobbies that also served him with lifelong friendships.

Arnie and Anne’s greatest earthly joy was found in their family. He will be sorely missed by his children; Linda (Greg) Benson of Gowrie, IA, Rocky (Sue) Rocholl of Ft. Wayne, IN, and Patti Erickson of Pequot Lakes, MN; grandchildren; Kelly (Shea) Mangus, Ryan Erickson, Ali (Matt) Loaney, Jon (Alyssa) Rocholl, Katie Rocholl; greatgrandchildren Connor & Cassidy Mangus and Adriana & Brynlee Loaney; and sisters Eleanor Christie of Clawson, MI and Kathie Tenney of Hazel Park, MI. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Anne; his brother Harold, sisters Edith Bunker and Evelyn Nagler; son-in-law Steve Erickson.

Alice Hiltner

Alice M. Hiltner, 91 of Melrose, passed away peacefully October 25, 2020 at Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m.

Sunday, November 8 with a prayer service being held at 4 p.m. at PattonSchad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Alice M. Hiltner was born September 9, 1929 in Cudahy, Wisconsin to Raymond and Caroline (Ulenkamp) Mohs. Her family moved and she was raised in Melrose, Minnesota where she graduated from Melrose High School. Alice worked as an Operator for the local phone company. She married Raymond J. Hiltner on June 14, 1958. The couple moved to Eden Valley for a few years and then to Minneapolis where they lived for over 40 years and raised their 5 children. When they retired in 2002, they moved back to Melrose.

Alice was an avid sports fan. She loved watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings.

She would tally all the stats and know about each player on all her favorite teams. She also enjoyed bowling, crocheting afghans and slippers, puzzle books, going to the casino, and staying up late and reading, as that was her personal quiet time. Alice was known for baking rhubarb cake, which was a family favorite. A piece of cake in her household was always a half of a row. Many have tried to copy her recipe, but it was never as good as her own. Alice loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Alice will be deeply missed by her children, Lori Heath of Maple Grove, Lynn (Loren) Pundsack of Melrose, Donald Hiltner of Melrose, and Ronald (Tammy) Hiltner of Sauk Centre; grandchildren, Kyle (Amanda) Heath of Shoreview, Mallory (Erik) Lind of Minneapolis, Stephanie (Brandon) Hiltner of Grand Forks, Donald Connors of Maple Grove, and Cassandra Connors of Melrose; and great-grandchildren, Allison, Ava, Alex, Harper, Theo, and Hudson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Hiltner; mom, Caroline Mohs, daughters, Jan Marie and Sue Ann; granddaughter, Shanna; sister, Jeanette Dirkhising; brother, Melvin Mohs; and son-inlaw, Tim Heath.

Barbara Rollins

Services celebrating the life of Barbara Rollins, age 79 of Albany will be 7:00 PM, Thursday, November 5 at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home Chapel in Albany.

Barbara died at her home, surrounded by her family, on Friday, October 30.

Burial will be in North Star Cemetery in St. Cloud. There will be a time for friends and family to gather between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.

Barbara was born July 4, 1941 in Cold Spring. Her mother, Berdella Robbins and her step-father, George Lister raised Barbara in the Cold Spring-Rockville area. In 1959, Barbara married Thomas Alvin Rollins, SR in St. Cloud. The couple lived in several places while Thomas was in the Military. In 1975, during a move to a new base, Thomas unexpectedly died. Barbara settled on Elk Lake, near Clear Lake, with her 3 children. She attended St. Cloud State University where she earned a degree in Social Work and Criminal Justice. After graduating, she was hired by the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office where she held several roles, including jailer and patrol.

In 2002, Barbara moved to Albany. Barbara loved garage sales and “getting a deal.” She also loved to travel, her flower gardens and going to the casino. She will be remembered for her oatmeal cookies and the grandchildren all knew, “don’t mess with grandma” Barbara is survived by her children; Donna (Richard Guerre) Rollins, Baxter; Thomas (Carol) Rollins, Jr., Little Falls; Denise (Dennis) Scheid, Albany; 19 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother and six sisters.

She is preceded in death by her mother, step father, three sisters and two brothers.

Grey Eagle City • August 12, 2020 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joseph Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 12th day of August 2020 in council chambers. Council members present were Roland Ahrendt, Thom Muellner, Bill Pohlmann and Brian Hollenkamp. There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were John Call, Lori Hellmann and guest Tim & Susanna Tesch.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The sewer project was discussed. There are two temporary easements which still need to be obtained from Neibling and Karls. These easements are only during construction and will terminate once the construction in the two areas are complete.

The Clerk informed the council of the availability of CARES funding obtained through the State of Minnesota. The CARES funding must be used towards COVID 19 related expenses and there are very strict rules regarding the use of the funds as well as strict documentation on how the funds were spent. The City had very little in the way of COVID 19 expenses as many PPE items that were needed came from Todd County Emergency Management.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to accept the high bid from Mark Bayer for $3,500 for the purchase of the 1988 Mack Tanker Truck with the proceeds of the sale being deposited into the Fire Fund. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The Mayor received two bids for tennis court repairs prior to the meeting. More information will be obtained before a decision will be made.

Bryan Bye updated the council on the sewer project. A pre-construction meeting will be held on August 19th at 11:00 am at the Fire Hall. The County road portion of the project will not be done this year. The contractor is planning to start in mid-September.

Due to Covid-19, we are not able to have our 4-H achievement ceremony so clubs will have to have their own awards program. Todd County had a great representation for the State Fair showcase. The officer election was then held, the 2020-21 Leaders Council president is Katrina Buntjer, vice president is Kolt Carstensen, treasurer is Bernadette Sauer, secretary is Haylie Wielenberg, and reporter is Alexis Woeste. National 4-H Week is October 6th12th. Aylssa plans to attend the commissioner meeting.

Jane Bailey and Elaine Walters will be retiring from 4-H on November 1st. Much appreciation for all the years you contributed to the 4-H community!

In the road report someone damaged the surface of 341st Ave. Supervisors will look into putting up road signs. The contractor and supervisor will install culvert on Essex Trail. Contractor will keep up with gravel needs. There are report of beaver problems on 162nd St again.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $54,671.38.

First Response Team: Doucette explained they received $5,000 grant from Sourcewell for COVID expenditures. They also applied for a United Way grant as well.

The LUCAS machine is here and the majority of both the Fire Department and First Response Team have been trained on how to use the machine.

The First Response Team offered Trick or Trunk on Halloween.

The Team would like to open applications for up to four new team members with the applications to be advertised December 5, 12 and 19 in the Morrison County Record and the Hometown News.

Benson moved to approved for the First Response Team to hire up to four new First Responders, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

Bartells moved to pass resolution 11-2-2020-2 approving a $180.00 donation from the Upsala Lions to the Upsala First Response Team, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Maintenance Report: Tschida reported on water and sewer levels.

Hydrant flushing has been completed as well as the lift stations clean out. The lift station near the townhomes had an excess amount of household grease. The council directed Stevens to send a letter to the manager.

Tschida stated that the Public Works Department is starting to winterize the city buildings and park.

The Plow truck is almost ready for the winter season.

Tschida also explained cars parked in the street is a big problem when trying to plow the streets.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the November calendar.

Planning Commission: Marty reported the Planning & Zoning approved a new garage. They also discussed the sale of the City Land for the Assisted Living.

Recreation Board: No meeting was held.

Bid Opening for City Owned Land: Two bids were received for the City owned landlocked property.

Bartells moved to approve the high bid of $300.00 to K.H. Gunderson, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Unfinished Business: Upsala Senior Living: Bartells moved to pass resolution 11-2-2020-1, a resolution authorizing the sale of property located in the City of Upsala to Upsala Senior Living, Inc., 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

Johnson moved to approve the purchase agreement to sell PID 47.0129.000 to Upsala Senior Living, Inc., 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

CARES Act dollars: Lange moved to approve the latest purchases of the CARES Act dollars, and granted the COVID Committee of Benson, Bartells and Stevens to spend the final dollars appropriately before the deadline, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

New Business: City Utilities Assessed onto Property Taxes: Stevens presented the current list of overdue utility bills. Benson moved to approve assessing any delinquent city utility bills to the property taxes as of November 16, 2020, via Morrison County, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Upsala Bucks as Gift Cards: Stevens reported she received a call from a resident requesting to purchase Upsala Bucks as gift cards for Christmas.

Bartells moved to approve the selling of Upsala Bucks as gift cards for dollar to dollar value, 2nd by Benson. Motion Carried unanimously.

Acknowledgements: Appreciation to the First Response Team and Word of Life Church for hosting Trunk & Treats for the kids in our community so they could still celebrate Halloween.

Spoofing is when scammers change the phone number that shows up on your caller ID screen. These scammers are calling residents using “CentraCare Medical Alert Service.” Once connected, the caller does not identify themselves and begins to request information.

The phone number on caller ID is not the phone number for CentraCare Medical Alert Service and is not affiliated with them.

Baby Step 2 wouldn’t be affected, except that your monthly mortgage payment will go up a little. I wouldn’t pay the refinance costs out of pocket, though. I’d roll them into the loan. You’d be saving more than 2% by locking in this crazy-low interest rate, and you’re knocking the whole thing down to a 15-year loan. I love all that.

It’s definitely worth the extra $200 a month to make it happen.

Think about it this way. You’re going to be saving more than $4,000 a year with the interest rate reduction. You’re not going to see it in cash flow because of the $200 increase in monthly payments, but over the scope of the loan, you’re going to be charged between $4,000 and $4,500 less per year for interest. All that money is going toward paying back the closing costs and reducing the principal built into the move from 28 years to 15 years.

Yes, you should do this!

Dear Dave, I just saved up my $1,000 beginner emergency fund, and I’m looking at paying off my car and credit card debt—a total of $3,400 - by the end of January. Before I started your plan, I took out a $7,500 student loan to pay for my fall and spring semesters.

I still have a year of school left, which will cost about $10,000. Should I save up the money for my final year before attacking my student loan debt, so I don’t have to take out another one, or go ahead and begin paying it off?

-Emma Dear Emma, Well, it doesn’t make much sense to pay off the current student loan, then turn around and take out another one. Your first goal— after you get the credit cards and car paid off—should be saving cash to finish school.

Once you’ve done that, start paying off the student loan.

Long story short, you’ve got to stop borrowing money. The idea of saving up to pay for things should be the default setting in your brain, Emma. Otherwise, you’re going to spend the rest of your life with car payments and other debt hanging around your neck. That’s not being responsible with your money, and it will keep you from saving for stuff that matters and becoming wealthy.

Stop. Borrowing. Money. I hope I haven’t been unclear.

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2014 Ford F350 with the diesel engine 6.7 four-wheel drive and I have been having a lot of issues with my DEF, Diesel Exhaust Fluid System. I purchased the truck new and have been very happy with it, but this system has been the cause of a lot of trouble. I had the complete system replaced three times under warranty and had to wait for parts for it for over two weeks due to backorders and now that it is out of warranty they tell me I need another complete system at a cost of over $3k and it is also on backorder possibly for a month. This is a work truck so I cannot wait for parts, but the dash says reduced power and I can’t drive it very fast.

Is there a way around the system until it can get fixed and do I have to repair it?

They are awfully expensive to fix and, in some cases, restrict fuel economy and cause drivers to park their vehicles while they wait to be fixed. There is no legal way around the problem right now. Removing or bypassing the systems is against federal law. In the case of one that has less than 100k miles make sure to check with the dealer for extended warranty coverage of the parts as well.

belt change at 120k miles and the owners were not willing to drop the price to help us with the $1k belt change cost. The last one was perfect only needing a belt and the owner helped us with the cost of replacing it. It does have a weird clunk in the back every time we come to a stop at about 20 mph it goes thump. It will not do it unless we have been over 65mph first though.

They often reveal cost saving problems. As for the clunk in the back we may have an idea. Some of these cars had an automatic rear spoiler which only deploys at higher roads speeds. In town you would not have it deploy but over 60 you should and when you slow to under 30 it retracts and with age, they can become quite noisy.
