Age is only a number -By Harvey Mackay October is one of my favorite months, perhaps because that’s when I get to blow out my birthday candles and celebrate another successful year.

Who doesn’t love birthdays?

My age is irrelevant; in fact, I subscribe to the iconic comedian Jack Benny’s philosophy. He turned 39 in 1933, and remained that age until his death in 1974.

I’ve been 39 for a few years now, and it just keeps getting better.

As a constant advocate for lifelong learning, I am directing the advice in this column not only to those who have years of job experience, but also those who are just getting started in the work world and everyone in between.

repeat after me: your age does not dictate your ability to accomplish. Reaching that magical retirement age does not mean you are finished contributing to society. Let me give you a few examples of people who refused to “act their age”: Admiral Rickover, the designer of the first nuclear submarine, was still a consultant to the Navy at the age of 82.

Both Grandma Moses and Georgia O’Keefe, American artists, continued to paint well past the age of 90 and on into their hundredth year. Russian artist Marc Chagall was designing stained glass windows for churches in many parts of the world at age 90.

Frank Lloyd Wright, considered one of the greatest modern American architects, created an entirely original concept of architecture when he was well past the age of 90. Wright was fond of saying: “Youth is a quality, and if you have it, you never lose it.”

George Bernard Shaw, Irish dramatist, was still working on a play at the age of 93 when his prolific life ended prematurely due to complications from a

He created a retirement home for musicians.

Arthur Rubinstein gave a concert at Carnegie Hall at age 90. He was almost blind and unable to read the notes.

Nevertheless, he played with his usual perfection. Afterward, he was heard to remark, “The music is in my mind.”

Albert Schweitzer was an outstanding German organist and philosopher who created a new life in Africa for the underprivileged. He was a physician, a clergyman and an expert in music. He was active until age 90.

Pablo Picasso, having painted over 20,000 pictures, is considered by many to be the greatest artist of the 20th century. At the age of 90, he remarked, “I often feel young ... like 20, and I am only concerned when I feel that I am aging.”

Robert Frost, nearly 87, read his poem, “The Gift Outright” at the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy in 1961.

Regardless of your vocation, I strongly encourage you to never stop using your talents and abilities. Even if you are looking forward to leaving the workforce at some point, you have marvelous opportunities to leave your mark on the world.

Most of us are familiar with the myth of the Phoenix, an Egyptian bird of great beauty that was found in the Arabian Desert. There was only one, and it lived for hundreds of years. When it sensed that it was about to die, it built its own funeral pyre, lighted it by fanning its wings, then flew into the fire and arose young again from the ashes.

The Phoenix came to be associated with the sun god who disappeared as an old man each night and appeared as a child the following morning. For centuries the Phoenix has become a symbol of rebirth and renewal.

Historian Arnold Toynbee, shared this reflection on life at the age of 81: “As one grows older, the temptation to dwell on the past and to avert one’s eyes from the future grows. If one were to fall into this backward-looking stance, one would be as good as dead before physical death had overtaken us. Our minds, so long as they keep their cutting edge, are not bound by our physical

Obituaries Joan C. Otto

Stephen “Sam” Bus’

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Joan C. Otto, age 95, of Sauk Centre, was held Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Father Marv Enneking officiated and burial took place in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in New Munich.

Joan passed away Thursday, October 29, 2015 surrounded by loved ones at the CentraCare Health in Sauk Centre.

Joan was born on July 15, 1920 to Leo and Catherine (Thull) Sand in New Munich, and had 12 siblings. At age 27, she married James Otto and their union was blessed with eight children. Joan was a homemaker, caring for her family while James traveled for work, and always had homemade foods, caramel rolls, and canned goods to feed them all.

She liked having a vegetable garden, and actively gardened into her 90s. Joan would use her own compost, save seeds for the next year, and canned much of her and other’s produce. She also enjoyed quilting and crocheting, and was known to give hand-made items for gifts. As most of her brothers and her husband

were all veterans, Joan began to give back and show her support of veterans.

She was also a source of support and encouragement for her children, all of whom went on to college. Over the years, she was recognized often for her selfless giving of time and energy to help others.

Joan volunteered her time with veterans organizations, at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home, and at her church. She was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Church in New Munich, and also attended and volunteered at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose.

Joan is survived by her children Lois Tack, Brookfield, WI; Janice Bechdolt, Citrus Springs, FL; Tom (Marlette) Otto, Fairfax, MN; Rick (Pam) Otto, Milan, MN; Patrice Melom, St. Cloud, MN; Donna (Tom) O’Connor, Maple Grove, MN; her siblings Maynard (Mel) Sand, St. Joseph; Bert (Lorraine) Sand, New Munich; Marlene Benkowski, Morris; Syl Sand, St. Cloud; Flo (Ray) Mayers, New Munich; Jean (Clarence) Enneking, Albany; her 19 grandchildren; her 6 great-grandchildren; her son-inlaw Randall McKinnis; and many other family and friends.

She is greeted in Heaven by her parents Leo and Catherine Sand, her daughter Doris McKinnis, her son Robert Otto, her sisters Lucille Sand and Pauline Krushek, and her brothers Ed, Vern, Jerome and Ervin Sand.

George Patrick Posch, Jr. Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, November 5, 2015 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church in Bowlus, MN for George Patrick Posch, Jr. who died on Saturday, October 31, 2015 at the St. Cloud Hospital, in St. Cloud, MN. The Reverend John Odero will be the celebrant. Burial will in the St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish Cemetery.

Visitation will be one prior to the services on Thursday, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church.

Junior, as he was known, was born on June 5, 1955, the son of George and Mary Ann (Euteneuer) Posch, Sr. in Little Falls, MN. He grew-up on the family farm near Bowlus. He attended grade school at District #1189 in Bowlus and high school in Holdingford, graduating in the class of 1973. He married Gloria Dickhausen in 1976 and two children were born to this union.

He worked various jobs, until 1974 when he went to work for Polar Tank Trailer in Opole, MN. Over his 41 years there, he worked as a finisher, seamer, assembler, welder, and operator/layout which was his final position. He was a member of the International Association

of Machinists and Aerospace Local #165 in which he twice served as a steward.

In his younger days, Junior enjoyed racing his cars in the ¼ mile at various tracks in central Minnesota. He loved everything outdoors. This included hunting, fishing, gardening, cutting wood and helping on the area farms.

He was also known to help anyone with anything.

He was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church of Bowlus, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Junior is survived by; his son Jason (Melita) Posch of Bowlus, MN, his daughter Kimberly (Daniel) Fuentes of Milwaukee, WI, his four grandchildren; Xander, Xerie, Grace and Isaiah, his brothers and sisters; Kathleen (Richard) Knorr of Minnetonka, Jeanette (Albert) Schlangen of Bowlus, Robert (Catherine) of Avon, Richard of Bowlus, Terrence (Lisa) of Winsted and Brian (Molly) of Avon, nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He is survived by 4 brothers all of Alaska, 3 sisters of Alaska, Washington and Oregon, and a special companion of 33 years, Bunny Johnson of Albany.

David R. Bauer

David R. Bauer, age 67, of Elrosa, died Friday, October 30, 2015 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, November 3 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church

on November 7, 1970 in Melrose. David loved his family, career, and community.

His passion in life was helping to serve others through his work. He volunteered for many years at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters, the Elrosa Fire Department, Elrosa Commercial Club, Sauk Centre Lions Club, and was a member of the Elrosa Senior Citizens. He also enjoyed golfing, watching sports, playing cards, and visiting with people.

David is survived by his wife, Angie of Elrosa; children, Chad of Menomonee Falls, WI; Stacie (Rick) Harvala of Moorhead, MN; Perry (special friend, Joy Cochran) of Watertown, WI; Ryan (Tina) of St. Joseph, MN; Math (Kristin) of Elrosa, MN; Jill (Randy) Duevel of Prior Lake, MN; Kayla (Eric) Meyer of St. Joseph, MN; 15 Grandchildren; sisters, MaryAnn and Marlene Bauer of Elrosa, MN; and brother, Dale (Barb) of Brainerd, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dale Rahn, 61 year old resident of Bowlus, MN, died Saturday, October 31 in Royalton, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 7 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church in Bowlus, MN with Father John Odero officiating. The burial will be held in the parish cemetery.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Friday and from 9:00 A.M. on Saturday until the hour of the service all at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church in Bowlus, MN. A parish prayer will be said at 7:00 P.M. on Friday evening at the church.

Dale Lawrence Rahn was born on September 6, 1954 in Little Falls, MN to Lawrence and June (Williams) Rahn. He grew up in Burtrum, MN and graduated from Grey Eagle High School with the class of 1972. He was united in marriage to Betty Laumeyer in 1979. Together the couple had two boys, Jason and Justin.

The couple later divorced. Dale worked for 30 plus years at Crestliner Boats in Little Falls, MN and for several years as an assembler at Polar Tank in Opole, MN. Dale was united in marriage to Judy Jendro on September 14, 1990 in St. Cloud, MN. The couple made their home in Bowlus, MN. Dale enjoyed his time spent with family at his cabin on Big Swan Lake. He enjoyed fishing, pontooning, shaking dice, playing cards and hunting. Dale treasured his time spent deer hunting with his son, Jason and

friend, Jerry and all the shenanigans that would occur during the hunt. Dale was a member of Two Rivers Snowmobiling Club.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Jason Rahn of Little Falls, MN, Justin Rahn of Minneapolis, MN; parents, Lawrence and June Rahn of Burtrum, MN; step-children, Kellie Thommes of Cumberland, WI, Steve Thommes of St. Cloud, MN; step-grandchildren, Marissa Kreifels and Brittni Kreifels; siblings, Wayne (Janice) Rahn of Burtrum, MN, Pam (Randy) Block of Lastrup, MN; brothers-in-law, David (Marie) Jendro of Laporte, MN, Gary Jendro of Royalton, MN and Ralph Jendro of Pierz, MN; sisters-in-law, Sharon (Ervin) Fleischaker of Paynesville, MN, Audrey (Ronald) Kloss of Royalton, MN and 35 nieces and nephews.

The casket bearers will be Steve Marty, Tim Mohlenkamp, Bill Henry, Dennis Reis, Marty Dvorak and Jeff Solorz.

The honorary casket bearers will be Gary Jendro, Ralph Jendro, Wayne Rahn, Pam Block and Jerry Zilkoski.

Dale was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Rahn in 2014 and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport, the Albany American Legion, Voiture 40 & 8 and Boxcar, Duck Unlimited, Pheasants Forever and the NRA. Willie was a kind and generous man who loved animals, especially dogs. He and his wife, Anne, had many wonderful pets over the years. They also loved fishing, boating, bird watching and nature.

He also enjoyed his Harley Davidson Road King. His greatest joy in life was his marriage to his beloved wife, Anne.

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of William “Willie” Wolke, age 63 of Freeport, will be 11:00 AM Friday, November 6 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport.

Burial will be at a later date in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls. Willie died Monday, with his wife at his side, at the St. Cloud Hospital. There will be a time for friends and family to gather after 10:00 AM Friday until the time of service at church in Freeport. Arrangements are being made with the Miller-Carlin Funeral Homes.

Willie was born November 25, 1951 in St. Cloud to Roman and Margaret (Sakry) Wolke. He grew up in St. Cloud and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era where he served with an artillery unit stationed in Germany. After his return to St. Cloud, he worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital as an Alcohol and Chemical Dependency

6th grader Chloe Mayer from Upsala Elementary School was shaking with surprise when she was awarded a “Star Performer” medal on Friday. Dean of Students Nick Klug presented her with the award during the school’s Halloween parade attended by many parents, students and staff. Her accomplishment was earlier that day, she shocked herself by typing 74 wpm! She is the second student this year in Mr. Drill’s Language Art Class to accomplish the goal of hitting 70 wpm! 15 other Upsala 6th graders are currently typing over 50 wpm!

Sept. 24th Region 2 FFA contests in Aitkin, MN proved to be a wet and cold day.

Our General Livestock Team could not warm up to the judge and placed 6th, just 17 points away from a state trip. Team members: Andrew Katterhagen, Jadon Buntjer, William Herzog, and Erik Gessell.

Our LPGE Soils Team placed 1st in the contest, and tried not to swim getting in and out of the soil pits, taking a commanding lead in the contest. They will compete at State in April. Team members: Hunter Cavilero, Nick Middendorf, Josh Connor, TJ Becker, and John Becker. Submitted by Curt Gjerstad.

USA Community Choir to perform Veterans Day Program The USA Community Choir will be performing their Veterans Days program this year at the Upsala High School Auditorium at 7 p.m. on Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11. Featuring soloists TSGT’s Tom Speckhard and Maureen Putnam. Also performing are the Blivet Players and the USA Honor Squad.

This year the program consists of the final battles of World War II with songs consistent with that era. Some of the tunes are the humorous “Why do they call a Private a Private?” and “This is the Army Mr. Jones.” Some heartfelt ballads such as “Keep the Homes Fires Burning,” “The Navy Hymn” and “The Mansions of the Lord.” Also included are some traditional patriotic songs as

“This is a Great Country,” “God Bless America,” “This is My Country” and the “Star Spangled Banner.” The Choir is directed by Jerry Knafla from Little Falls and consists of members from Little Falls, Grey Eagle and Burtrum area.

Active duty, reserve and retired military personnel in uniform, Legion, VFW and Auxiliary members wearing organization hats or jackets are admitted at no charge. There is an admission fee. Proceeds go to assist the music programs in the Swanville and Upsala schools.

Please join us for the final Veterans Day show until 2017. This program is funded in part by grants from the Laura Jane Musser Fund and the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe.

October 29, 2015: Christopher Kraker from Melrose, MN reported hitting a deer on Hwy 287 near County road 6. Kraker was issued a permit for the deer.

October 31, 2015: At approximately 1921 hours, Roger Zastrow (Age 57) of rural Long Prairie struck a deer on County Road 12 near 220th Street in Bruce Township. Zastrow was driving a 2011 Chevy Silverado which sustained front end and passenger side damage.

November 1, 2015: At approximately 1730 hours Scott Kern of Sauk Centre was traveling south on County Road 11 in Little Sauk Township when

he struck a deer with his 2004 Chevy Impala. The vehicle was not damaged in the crash and Kern was issued a possession tag for the deer.

November 2, 2015: At approximately 0634 hours Jodi Tesch age 32, Rural Long Prairie was traveling west on State Highway 27 when she stuck a deer with her 2005 Nissan Altima. The vehicle sustained front end damaged and had to be towed from the scene. Tesch and her two passengers where not injured in the crash.

November 3, 2015: The Prairie Lakes CO-OP called the TCSO and advised that someone had just turned in some 2 way radios that had been found on Co Rd 2 near the intersection of Bittner Dr. in section 12 of Kandota Township. The radios can be claimed at the Prairie Lakes CO-OP of Long Prairie.

Museum Program Focuses on Saint John’s Abbey Church Historian Discusses Marcel Breuer and the Creation of a Modern Sacred Space Victoria Young, an architectural historian from the University of St. Thomas, will present “Saint John’s Abbey Church” during Breakfast Club on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at the Stearns History Museum. The program begins at 9 a.m. and focuses on the transition, not only architecturally, in how liturgical space developed after World War II. In the 1950s, the Benedictine Abbey of Saint John the Baptist in Collegeville decided to expand their campus, including the construction a new church.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, Our son is a senior in college.

We all signed a contract before he left for school a few years ago stating that we would pay for school and provide him a car to drive as long as he maintained good grades and behaved in a respectful and mature manner. Over the last couple of years, his grades have dropped and he’s been acting more and more disrespectful. We learned recently that he even told a family friend that he hated us. My husband went to confront him about his behavior and this statement, and our son admitted he said it and was unrepentant. My husband immediately took the car and cut off his cell phone, like we had agreed. But now, I just feel sick with worry. Did we do the right thing?

-Carla Dear Carla, I’m sure you do feel sick inside. If you didn’t feel that way to some extent, you’d be a terrible person. This is your child we’re talking about. And even though he brought this on himself by being a twerp, and you guys are simply following through on the agreement, it hurts you because you’re human — and a good mom.

It may seem extreme to some folks, but what you guys did wasn’t capricious or arbitrary. There was a deal in place, and he knew the terms of the contract. If someone worked for me and did or said or tweeted the kind of stuff you’re talking about, I’d fire them on the spot. This kid has got to learn how to behave in the culture and that there are consequences for breaking your word and violating contracts.

But here’s some good news for you, Carla. You married a real man — a strong and loving man. What he did took

a ton of strength and courage. There are so many wimps in our culture today, but you married a good one. And whether this kid realizes it or not, he’s got one heck of a dad who really cares.

I’ll give you a prediction. Within 30 days, your kid comes home wagging his tail behind him. Even if he’s stubborn, being hungry and strapped for cash — along with losing his wheels — will solve a lot of that. From diapers until they’re out of the house, and even after they’re out of the house, you make a lot of those kinds of calls if you’re a good parent.

-Dave Dear Dave, I’m 45 years old and a single mom. I have a decent job, but I want to go back to school to become a nurse. The money would be much better than what I make now, but I’d have to take out student loans to make this happen. Is it worth the risk?

-Susan Dear Susan, Is nursing a field worth pursuing, especially when it is something you love and would increase your income significantly? You bet! Nursing is a very honorable profession. Am I going to tell you to take out loans to make it happen?

Absolutely not!

Save as much as you possibly can first — even if it’s just a little each month. Then, I want you to look into Pell Grants, traditional and non-traditional scholarships and what I call the “indentured servitude” program. There’s still something of a nurse shortage in this country, and there are hospitals and drug companies that will agree to pay your school bills if you go to work for them afterwards for a specific number of years.

I’m proud of you, Susan. Gaining knowledge and improving yourself and your career prospects are all good things.

But stay away from student loan debt.

It’s bad and unnecessary!

Holiday Kick Off in Grey Eagle The Community Builders are pairing with the Central Minnesota Credit Union in Grey Eagle to spice up their holiday open house on Dec. 11th. There will be the usual cookie, hot chocolate, coffee, cider, and Santa at the Credit Union but we will also be doing sleigh rides around town. In addition to this, there are many businesses that are offering little gifts and a vendor/craft fair will be held at the café. The library has

generously decided to be open and do a craft project with the kids.

Upsala Sr. High Student of the Month Rachel Prom has been named the Upsala Senior High School Student of the Month for September.

Rachel is the daughter of DJ and Joanne Prom, and the sister of Collin.

Rachel is very involved in student activities at UHS as a member of Band, Choir, Drama, Knowledge Bowl, NHS and Student Council. Rachel has been a member of the “A” Honor Roll, and has also received academic recognition as Area Student of the Month numerous times. Rachel also serves as the President of the student council. In addition to her active involvement in school activities, Rachel is a member of the Albany

Community Band and also volunteers at the Upsala Public Library, serves mass at St. Mary’s Church, and is involved in St. Mary’s as a musician.

Rachel’s favorite and most valuable class is College Psychology because she really enjoys evaluating and learning more about herself and there is a lot that she can apply to her life.

Ms. Jessica Hovland, Rachel’s Intro to College Algebra teacher states, “Rachel is an amazing girl who inspires people around her to be better. She is one of the most patient, caring and fun students that I have had the opportunity to work with.

She is more than deserving of this honor!”

In addition to her active school life, Rachel enjoys making music, going for walks, and making memories with family and friends. Rachel has this advice for her classmates - “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are” - E.E. Cummings.

DNR Provides Buffer Mapping Project Details

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is providing a timeline and other details about its production of maps for the state’s new law requiring vegetative buffers around bodies of water. The information is available at www. mndnr.gov/buffers.

“We understand people have questions about the buffer initiative,” said Dave Leuthe, DNR project manager.

“This information explains the process the DNR will use for the mapping project, the timeline in which maps will be developed, and opportunities for local governments and the public to engage in the process.”

Gov. Mark Dayton’s landmark buffer initiative was signed into law earlier this year. The law will establish new perennial vegetation buffers of up to 50 feet along rivers, streams and ditches to help filter out phosphorus, nitrogen and sediment.

The DNR is responsible for producing maps of public waters and ditch systems that require buffers under the new law. Local governments will provide information on ditches, which the DNR will integrate with information on public waters to develop preliminary buffer maps. The DNR is scheduled to produce final maps by July 2016, using a fourphase approach: • Phase I: This fall, the DNR will use existing digital data to identify public waters that require a buffer (50-foot average width) and provide the information to local governments for review.

• Phase II: Beginning this fall and continuing through winter, the DNR will coordinate with counties and watershed districts to transfer local information on ditches, within the benefited areas of public drainage systems, into digital data. Upsala Jr. High Student of the Month Congratulations to 8th grader, Tiffany Loscheider, the September 2015 Upsala Area Schools Junior High School Student of the Month. She is the daughter of Laurie and Matthew Loscheider of Grey Eagle, Minnesota.

A consistent member of the A and B Honor Rolls, Tiffany is showing continued growth in her academic abilities.

She is a past recipient of “Student of the Month” and “Subject Area Student of the Month” and is a member of our junior high basketball team. Tiffany stated that the most valuable academic lesson she has learned this year is “When you fail, don’t stop. Try. You will succeed in life and get somewhere not by failing,

but by trying.”

Tiffany’s most valuable class is English because she uses it every day.

The class she most enjoys is global studies because “Even though it is confusing sometimes, it is still good to learn it. It is fun; we do fun things.”

Social studies teacher Roxann Lewis stated, “Tiffany is on her way to becoming a great student. She is very conscientious about her learning and seeks extra help when she needs it. Tiffany has a very good attitude and often assists her classmates. She is a pleasure to work with.”

Out of school, Tiffany likes playing with her little brother, collecting turtles, and being outside. In the future, she has plans to fix and work with electronics as a repair technician. When asked what advice she would give her fellow classmates Tiffany said, “Try. No matter how hard it gets, just try. Keep up the good work; it will get you somewhere.”

Anticipation Builds for Deer Opener

Deer hunters will soon head out to the fields and forests for the firearms deer opener that gets underway a halfhour before sunrise on Saturday, Nov. 7.

Here are some other reminders from the DNR for the Minnesota firearms deer season.

Check regulations: The DNR strongly advises hunters to review new deer hunting regulations, permit area designations and boundary changes.

Find this and more deer hunting information from the DNR. Buy your license: With nearly 500,000 firearms deer hunters in the state, the DNR encourages hunters to purchase their licenses early to avoid long lines and any potential system issues associated with the high sales volume. License agents where you can buy a license are located across Minnesota.

Changes in 2015 affect when licenses are valid if purchased after a season is open. A deer hunting license purchased after a season is open is valid the same day of purchase if purchased prior to the beginning of legal shooting hours. If the license is purchased after legal shooting hours have begun, then the license is valid the following day.

Register deer: Deer must be registered within 48 hours after the deer was taken, before being processed and before

antlers are removed. Hunters can register deer they harvest by making a telephone call, using the Internet or bringing deer to a big-game registration station.

Hunters need to provide accurate information when registering. Registering a deer as taken in a permit area different from where is was actually taken is a violation. Here are registration instructions for all methods. Registration is important because it provides data on harvest that’s used for management of deer populations.

• Phase III: In late winter 2016, the DNR will use the combined public water and ditch system data to produce preliminary buffer maps. Local governments such as cities, townships and soil and water conservation districts, will review the maps, take input from landowners, and provide comments to the DNR. • Phase IV: In summer 2016, the DNR will deliver integrated buffer maps to the Board of Water and Soil Resources, local soil and water conservation districts, and other local governments. The Board of Water and Soil Resources is responsible for the implementation process.

There will be public engagement opportunities when the preliminary maps are available. The maps will help landowners identify whether they need to create a buffer and, if so, whether they need a 16.5-foot or 50-foot average buffer width.

Local soil and water conservation districts will work directly with landowners and help them use the maps to create the right size buffer, or help the landowner select an alternative water quality practice in lieu of a buffer.
