Never say no for the other person -By Harvey Mackay A farmer’s plow broke, and he thought he would ask his neighbor Murphy if he could borrow his plow. As he was walking to the Murphy farm, he thought to himself, “I hope Murphy has finished all his own plowing. He’s kind of lazy, and he might not have done it yet.”

After a few more minutes he thought, “What if Murphy’s plow is old. He won’t want to lend it to me then.” Then he thought, “Murphy was never a very helpful fellow. He might not lend me his plow, even if it’s in perfect condition and he finished his own plowing weeks ago.”

As he arrived at Murphy’s farm, he thought, “Murphy can be a mean old fellow.

I bet he won’t lend me his plow just to watch me go to ruin.”

Finally the farmer knocked on Murphy’s front door.

“Good morning!” Murphy said. “What can I do for you?”

The farmer blurted out, “You can keep your bloody plow!”

Thinking negative has no positive.

Negativity makes a person look at the land of milk and honey and see only calories and cholesterol.

I constantly preacxzh: “Never say no for the other person.” People go around all their lives and say – I can’t sell him or her. He or she won’t mentor me. Or in this case, Murphy won’t lend me his plow.

Maya Angelou, one of my favorite poets and authors, said: “I am convinced that the negative has power and if you allow it to perch in your house, in your mind, in your life, it can take you over.”

That’s why I don’t hang around with negative people. A negative person brings you down. A negative person sees the difficulty in every opportunity, while a positive person sees the opportunity in every difficulty. A positive mind anticipates happiness, joy, health and success.

Dr. Herbert H. Clark, a psychologist from The Johns Hopkins University, discovered that it takes the average person about 48 percent longer to understand a sentence using a negative than it does to understand a positive or affirmative sentence.

Norman Vincent Peale wrote a book a few decades ago, which I reread and study every now and then, titled “The Power of Positive Thinking.” I recommend this little gem to everyone.

One of my favorite aphorisms goes like this: Watch your thoughts; they become words.

Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

This gives you a choice, a positive or negative path. Clearly, the positive path will lead to a more rewarding, more contented life.

If you think positively, you will be more inclined to speak positively. Positive words will spur positive actions. If you behave in a positive way, you will form good habits. That will lead you to your destiny: what you will eventually become as a person.

Years ago, I came across an essay that really solidified my commitment to positive thinking. It has been credited to several people, most often Robert J. Burdette or the ubiquitous “unknown.” Regardless of whoever authored it, here is the message for you to contemplate: “There are two days in every week about which we should not worry, two days which should be kept from fear and apprehension.

“One of these days is Yesterday with its mistakes and cares, its faults and blunders, its aches and pains. Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control. All the money in the world

cannot bring back Yesterday. We cannot erase a single word we said. Yesterday is gone.

“The other day we should not worry about is Tomorrow with its possible adversities, its burdens, its large promise and poor performance. Tomorrow is also beyond our immediate control. Tomorrow's sun will rise.

Until it does, we have no stake in Tomorrow, for it is yet unborn.

“This leaves only one day - Today.

Anyone can fight the battles of just one day.

It is only when you and I add the burdens of those two awful eternities – Yesterday and Tomorrow – that we break down.

“It is not the experience of Today that drives men mad. It is remorse or bitterness for something that happened Yesterday and the dread of what will happen Tomorrow.”

That’s a difficult formula to improve upon, and perhaps even more challenging to practice. But I promise you, I’m positive you will be better off for trying!

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Outhouses

They were all built for the same purpose. They were usually of a similar size, however there were many personal details which made each one unique.

The outside paint color was usually the first observable difference. Some were colored the same color as the home, some were painted to blend in with the surroundings and others were obviously painted with whatever paint was left in the can after something else was painted. The entrance door was sometimes simply a flat door, but others had a crescent carved in them. I believe the crescent was only for appearance purposes, although it could have been made so that an individual who was in a hurry could easily see if the building was occupied.

The interior throne contained either one or two seating positions, thereby becoming either a one holer or a two holer. There was sometimes a smaller box located close to the floor to accommodate the younger children.

Some interiors were painted and others were decorated with wall paper. Some seats were simply holes in the “bench," while others had white wooden comfort seats attached. As you can tell, the structural decoration went from basic to rather ornate.

No mater how they appeared, the basic outhouse had similar problems. I never observed one of those structures that was heated. In past years, we experienced temperatures below -20 for at least 3 weeks each winter, this caused us to spend a much shorter time in the outhouse. For the fellows that lived on the farm, the warm barn seemed to be a better alternative.

There was a certain odor which was present during the warm months. It could be reduced by putting lime down the hole. Flies were attracted to the outhouse and as a result, spiders found a good place for a banquet.

They would place their webs across the sitting holes to catch flies that were buzzing about.

The human user needed to take a rolled-up sheet of catalog paper and remove the spider webs before using the facility.

I remember the building being used as a place for a couple of younger girls to use as a place to share secrets and private conversations. Those were the days when private conversations were done person to person and not as a text.

Our outhouse was a very basic structure, but what made it different were the summertime occupants. There was a spider we called a wolf spider who didn’t seem to make webs. Food was obtained by waiting for the fly to come close and he would jump on it. This occupant was quite large with harry legs. There was an opening in the top corner of the building which allowed a wren to build a nest behind a bracket in the upper corner.

She came back every year and would sing to someone in the outhouse. We were not sure if she was trying to sing us a friendly song or if she was trying to warn us away.

Halloween was a hazardous time for an outhouse. The mischief trick was to tip over someone’s outhouse. My Great Grandfather was in the outhouse when they came to tip it, he yelled loudly and the vandals ran away. In later years some of the outhouses were used to store items which were not currently being used. One outhouse was tipped and it evidently was the storage place for storm windows. The result was a loud crash with a lot of glass breakage. One method to discourage outhouse tipping was to move it about 2 feet forward.

This left an open hole with a surprise at the bottom for those who went around the back in the dark.

Some counties have Planning and Zoning Boards who actually threaten court proceedings against those with an outhouse, however they choose to ignore those with outhouses which are a result of a religious preference.

Outhouses produce a feeling of warmth and familiarity in our memories. The new generation just doesn’t know what they missed.

Wikipedia defines advent as: “Advent is a season observed in most Christian denominations as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for both the celebration of the Nativity of Christ at Christmas and the return of Christ at the Second Coming.”

I am going to bold at Christmas and say that most people do not know what the true meaning of Christmas is. Many answer the question “What does Christmas mean to you?” by saying, family, presents, Santa, carols, pageants, etc.

During this Advent season, please read the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Study Jesus, and then look at the reason why Jesus even came in the first place. Jesus came the first time to save the world! He was born that first Christmas day, lived a righteous life and then died at the hand of sinners. But it was for a reason. The old sacrificial system wasn’t good enough. Jesus came as the perfect lamb of God, perfect in every way. His sacrifice was for all people. We only need to accept the gift.

Ephesians 2:8-9 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast.”

We all have sinned, Romans 3:23, and we need to be saved. One day, Jesus is coming back to bring all those who are waiting for Him to live where He lives. But in that day, Jesus is not coming back as the Savior, He has already been here in that role. When He comes back, He will be the JUDGE of the whole world. You

Marie E. Kampsen

Marie E. Kampsen, age 101 of New Munich, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Monday, November 27, 2023 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 2 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Derek Wiechmann officiating. Interment will be held in Immaculate Conception Cemetery in New Munich.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa.

Marie Elizabeth Boeckermann was born March 23, 1922 in St. Rosa, Minnesota to Bernard and Amanda (Toenyan) Boeckermann. She was united in marriage to Henry J. Kampsen on June 24, 1940 at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa.

The couple farmed in Oak Township, Stearns County for 58 years and continued living on the farm while they raised mink for 35 years.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich and the Christian Women. Marie enjoyed playing cards, quilting, and truly enjoyed living life to the fullest. Her biggest joy in life was spending time with her family and her friends.

Survivors her children, Virginia (Elmer) Meyer of Melrose, Marcella (Dennis) Mareck of Albany, Clarence (Renee) Kampsen of Freeport, and Jeanette (Melvin) Kalthoff of Spring Hill; 16 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and one greatgreat-granddaughter; brother, Roger (Irene) Boeckermann of Melrose; and sister, Monica Rieland of New Munich.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Henry J. Kampsen on July 10, 2001; parents; grandson, Sherwood Meyer; sisters, Stella Ostendorf, Eleanore Wiechmann, Bernadette Hallermann, Caroline Ahrens, and Helen Hallermann; and brothers, Lawrence, Edmund, Wilfred, Anthony, and Francis Boeckermann.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral and Cremation Services of Melrose.

M i c h a e l W. Rieland, age 73 of Melrose, passed away at the Melrose Hospital with family by his side on Thursday, November 23, 2023.

A mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Inurnment was held at the parish cemetery.

Michael Walter Rieland was born in Melrose on October 20, 1950 to Wilfred and Loretta (Welle) Rieland. He was a lifelong resident of Melrose, the town he loved. Mike graduated from Melrose High School in 1969.

On June 26, 1976, he was united in marriage to Mary Sullivan at the church of St. Francis DeSales in Belgrade, MN. He went on to work at Stearns Electric for 39 years.

Mike was a devoted husband for 47 years.

His wife, children, and grandchildren were the pride and joy of his life, and he loved them above all things. He had a strong faith and he lived it. He was a hard worker, had a generous heart, and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Mike was a jokester who loved a good time with his family and friends. You could often find him working on a project in his workshop, spending time on Big Birch Lake, or supporting his grandchildren in their activities.

Survivors include his wife Mary Rieland of Melrose; children Ryan (Jessica) of Shakopee, Matthew (Shari) of Big Birch Lake, Meghan (Daniel) Brown of Melrose, and Paul (Sue) Rieland of Cold Spring; 10 grandchildren Emily, Grace, James, Allison, William, Patrick, Bennett, Katherine, Nora and Andrew; brothers Gary (Katie) of St. Louis Park, Mark (Lou) Rieland of Durand, WI, and sister-in-law Shirley Rieland of Grey Eagle.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents Wilfred and Loretta Rieland; brother John “Jack” Rieland; father and mother-in-law John L. and Irene Sullivan; brothers-in-law Dennis “Mike” Sullivan, Stewart Laird and Gary Winter.

Rick J. Wensman, age 54 of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 27, 2023, at his home in Melrose, Minnesota after a five-year battle with stage 4 kidney cancer.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 1 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in Melrose. Parish prayers will be at 7 p.m. Thursday evening. In honor of Rick, please wear your favorite music/concert shirt Thursday night!

Rick Joseph Wensman was born December 26, 1968 to LeRoy and Beatrice (Jacobs) Wensman. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1987. On October 19, 1996, he married Karla Haskamp at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove. He worked at Melrose Body Shop for 25 plus years and then began working at Carstens in Melrose for the next 10 years. On December 11, 2018, Rick was diagnosed with cancer. He began a series of treatments and fought cancer hard.

Rick and Karla called Melrose home all their lives. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. He enjoyed shooting pool, watching sports, playing games on his tablet, doing yardwork, and helping Karla with her flowers. Rick enjoyed going to concerts with his family, crafts, making his famous flags, remodeling projects, but most of all, he enjoyed hanging out with friends and laughing and being together with his family.

Survivors include the love of his life, Karla Wensman; his pride and joy, Trevor Wensman and Courtney Wensman; brother, Jeff Wensman and his children, Kaitlyn and Ashlynn; brother, Jason Wensman; mother-inlaw, Diane Haskamp; sisters-in-law, Kristen and Kelli Haskamp; and brother-in-law, Michael Haskamp and his children, Cahil, Jayda, Layla (his only Godchild), Laycee, and Clayton.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents, LeRoy and Beatrice Wensman; and father-inlaw, Jim Haskamp.

Memorials are preferred.

Christmas Giving Tree for Upsala Senior Living

This giving tree is located at Paul and Kathy’s Supermarket. The tree is filled with stockings which has wish lists from the residents at Upsala Senior Living.

Instead of actively trying to convince him of something, a better route might be to sit down together and talk through the whole thing. Discuss it, agree on an amount and then agree to cut the cards up and close the accounts when you reach that figure. Remind him, too, you’d still have your debit cards in hand in the event of an emergency.

Dear Motor Medics, I will be ready to purchase a new car soon and will need to sell the one I have. I’d like to know how I can get the best resale value for my car and how to go about finding out how much that number should be.

-Darlene in McCook, Nebraska Dear Darlene, When you want to get the best resale value at the time of sale you should start at the time of purchase. Along the way keep all records of anything done to the car to show the care you have given it. A well cared for vehicle will bring more than a neglected one. Follow the severe service maintenance recommendations in the owner’s manual and when things break, have them fixed. If you have done none of these things or just a few you can still get good value for your car. A clean car will usually bring more money faster than a dirty one and often people buy on impulse because of looks alone. A complete professional detail is usually in the $200 range. Once it’s clean and ready to sell, set your price. Selling it privately will usually bring in the most money. To get a good estimate of what you should ask, check the local papers and car lots for similar mileage and condition vehicles. This will give you a real world estimate for the location you are in as prices can vary between markets.

My current 5-year-old minivan has never had them replaced, has 110,000 miles, and I plan on keeping it another 3 years or so.

-Scott in Fort Morgan, Colorado Dear Scott, Shocks and struts play a vital role in the ride comfort and safety of your vehicle keeping your tires in contact with the road and smoothing the ride. When they start to fail you may feel more bounce in the suspension or even feel the chassis bottom out over hard bumps. Usually before you feel the bounce braking distance and handling will be decreased. As they age the compressed gas/

oil mixture that is used internally will begin to leak, first the gas which goes unseen and next the oil which can usually be detected leaking down the body of the units. Any sign of leakage or excessive bounce indicates that it is time for replacement. Mileage wise at about 50,000 miles or so they will start to lose performance. If you were to drive a vehicle with new units, then drive yours, you would probably see a noticeable difference. This difference can mean shorter stopping times, better handling, and a smoother ride. For your vehicle with 110,000 miles and five years it is time for replacement.

A Wedding Funny

A little boy was in a relative's wedding.

As he was coming down the aisle he would take two steps, stop, and turn to the crowd (alternating between bride's side and groom's side). While facing the crowd, he would put his hands up like claws and roar loudly.

So it went, step, step, ROAR, step, step, ROAR all the way down the aisle.

As you can imagine, the crowd was near tears from laughing so hard by the time he reached the front. The little boy, however, was getting more and more distressed from all the laughing, and was near tears by the time he reached the pulpit. When asked what he was doing, the child sniffed and said, "I was being the Ring Bear."

Old Business: Snow Plowing of the City - The City did receive one quote for $700 per snow plow and must be at least an inch of snow.

The snow plow truck has been getting repairs done at Semi Pro Diesel out of Swanville. There have been no repairs made on the plow truck since 2020. General maintenance has been done.

Some further repairs are needed for the plow truck. There is a 1-2 week lead time needed to make the repairs. Romie Gessell made a motion to put a cap of $1200 for all the remaining repairs to be fixed. Juli Scherping supported. All in favor: motion carried. Contract Policing Rate Increase- Mayor and City Clerk has signed the Policing contract, increase will go into effect 1-1-24. No further action will be needed and will be removed from agenda.

City Locks /City Signs - The City is hoping to use Sourcewell Grant Funds to purchase new locks for the community center and new welcome signs on each end of town. More to come.

Office Update - No Update at this time. Additional funds needed hoping to come Sourcewell Grants.

Grants-Sourcewell: Mayor Ulbricht discussed AED. There is a larger cost up front and annual costs of $600. The Mayor went over everything that comes with the pricing. AED will go on an app and have a mapping site of the location of the AED, and we would register with the State and County level. Pads will need to be replaced every December. Gessell suggested a time frame to approve. Mayor discussed that we have one year from the date of the application. We have one year to complete tasks and improvements and use all the funds. A discussion was had on getting high audio and video recording devices to record the meetings. The City Clerk went over and passed out a pricing sheet of items/improvements to all city council members. Each item had about 3 quotes from different companies. The council reviewed the spreadsheet. MN Retention Documents - Since the office has been cleaned out and organized. A lot of random documents were found. The city reached out to the city attorney for advice on the retention policy. We were given the State of MN policies to follow. A list was produced about documents to be destroyed. The city is asking the council for approval to adopt the Retention Policy for MN, and destroy the items on the list provided. Ehlert made a motion to approve a list of documents to be destroyed. Scherping supported. All in favor: motion carried.

Open Floor Guidelines: Mayor Ulbricht talked with the city’s attorney about the Centennial Books. The city can give the books away because they are a historical item. City Council can vote to sell them for x amount, if they choose too. Attorney stated don’t worry about what has been done in the past. Attorney raised concern that we can't donate as a government entity to a non-profit. We can’t donate to use the facility.

Mayor gave an example of charging the Bean Bake only $150 for all the days. Attorney explained we have to offer things at market value.

Can’t focus on certain groups and nonprofits.

We have to raise non-profits use of the building.

Bean Bake is not historical or non-profit. In the past, checks were written from the city to the Bean Bake for any remaining funds. The city can no longer be able to do that per the City’s attorney. Rentals will have to be $75, meetings $40, and weddings $200, standard market value.

Funerals for city residents will remain free. Letters will be sent out to the Heritage Club about the increase.

Mayor discussed what happened at last month’s meeting and shared how that was completely disrespectful to all in attendance and uncalled for. Everyone can have their own say and input, but should be presented respectfully and presented correctly. Moving forward, open floor conversations will be limited to 2-3 minutes of open floor time per individual. If any outburst or disrespect is occurred toward the mayor, city council members, city clerk, or those in attendance, individuals will be asked to leave the meeting immediately. Any issues or concerns residents may have are asked to put it on the agenda to allow the city council time to prepare for a response, and to ensure accuracy in their response. If 2-3 minutes is not enough time, please reach out to your city council members directly with further discussion or concern. 3 minutes seems fair and keeps meetings on track. If you have any concerns or items you would like added to the agenda. Please reach out to the City Clerk at cityofburtrum@gmail.com to get those items added. Please have all items/concerns to the City Clerk by 4:30 P.M. on the Friday prior to the City Council meeting. We want to hear your voice!

Renewal of Liquor License - Scherping made motion to approve renewal of Liquor License for the Burtrum Cabooze. Ehlert supported. All in favor: motion carried.

Open Floor - Inventory has not been completed yet on Centennial items. Mayor states they can be given away. City Council members have started taking inventory of the Community Center items. Suggestions of putting Centennial items in the library, assisted living, and nursing homes in the area. A motion needed to whatever has been donated in the past. Ehlert made that motion. Todd County Soil & Water Conservation District

Ufda, that was a dry one this year. Are you considering irrigation next year on your crop fields and not sure how often to run the irrigator? Do you think there was room for improvement on your irrigation timing this year?

The Todd County SWCD offers irrigation scheduling. During the growing season a SWCD tech makes a weekly stop at your field to check rainfall or irrigation amounts and performs a soil moisture feel test. After that is done, the information is entered into a computer program. The computer program uses daily max temps and effective rainfall or irrigation along with crop growth stage and estimated evapotranspiration to then print out a graph that will be shown to the producer. The graph shows 7 days ahead and helps give the producer an idea if or when they will need to irrigate.

Are you ready to take the next step in managing your irrigation? There are soil moisture sensor options available through a variety of manufacturers that will help “keep an eye” on soil moisture and help you make more informed decisions on when and how much to irrigate. These two practices might even be eligible for cost share depending on where you are in the county. Are you a concerned citizen wondering about the irrigation in Todd County? Rest assured, there are a number of producers already using these practices to help minimize the amount of water being pumped.
