different ways. Some pout, a few get angry and others go into denial.

Repressing your feelings is a recipe for disaster. Ignoring things or holding them in only makes you feel worse. And it often magnifies the issue so that you cannot deal with it reasonably.

Getting angry isn’t any better.

Remember, anger is just one letter short of danger. You risk taking your anger out on someone who doesn’t deserve it, making things worse.

Pouting – feeling sorry for yourself – is probably the most common response. But it’s not the best way to deal with the situation. When you dwell on the negative aspects of a disappointing situation, you are blinded to the opportunities that could be staring you in the face.

Leadership consultant Kevin Eikenberry explains: “We can become much better leaders and professionals if we can get past our internal language and live in the present moment. The present offers us opportunities to learn, opportunities to teach, opportunities to reinforce positive behaviors in others, opportunities to see our world in new ways, and opportunities to enjoy our day more fully.

“Staying in pouting mode closes the door to all of these opportunities because we don’t see them – we are too busy thinking about ourselves.”

How will you possibly reach your potential if you are busy fretting about the past? Allow me to share a little secret: Life is full of disappointments, but it’s also full of opportunity.

The first step to getting over a letdown is to let your feelings out – appropriately. Talk to a trusted friend or write in a journal. Resist the temptation to lash out at the offender or your coworkers. Be extremely careful what you post on social media, because as you already know, the post will outlast the problem and potentially follow you indefinitely.

Next, put your worries in perspective. Was this just a blip on the radar or a life-and-death situation? Did you lose out on a promotion or lose your entire career? Was this more of a fenderbender or 50-car pile-up? Ask yourself: Will this matter a year from now . . . a month from now . . . two days from now? Few disappointments will have the kind of lasting impact that are worth allowing to fester. Carrying a grudge is a very heavy burden.

Then stop and think about the things that are going right for you. As my mother used to say, “There is always something to be grateful for.” Focus on positive thinking and see if your attitude doesn’t improve dramatically.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Modern Life

We didn’t have the access to a computer.

We didn’t spend a third of our waking hours staring at a little rectangular electronic device in our hand. TV wasn’t part of our lives. Did we feel deprived that we were not able to enjoy these things? No. They were not part of our lives, primarily because they were not yet invented.

Take a couple of moments and look around your kitchen. There are many electric machines that we just absolutely can’t live without. In our early years our mothers prepared meals and baked goods which were of excellent taste and quality. They didn’t have a slow cooker, electric frying pan, electric toaster, electric mixer, hot and cold running water, sink drains that didn’t run into a pail which occasionally needed to be emptied, electric dish washer, electric refrigerator and freezer, electric coffee maker, adequate electric lighting and by opening some of the cupboard doors we see other machines and gismos.

If suddenly these things were taken out of our kitchens, could the cooks still be successful when creating the families food? It might be an interesting experiment to try to run the kitchen the old way for a few days. The result would at least create an appreciation of the old methods.

The attached garage, possibly heated, with electric garage door openers on each of the doors. Hmm. Compare to the old garage which was

one of the outbuildings, comprised of a slanted roof and three outside walls.

No lighting. The forth wall didn’t exist, since most of the rain and snow was kept off of the vehicle and one needed sunlight to put water in and drain water from the radiator in the winter.

The workshop, in previous years, was a wooden structure, possibly consisting of a roof and four walls.

Cold in the winter and like an oven in the summer when working on farm machinery. Today the building is probably a frame structure covered with steel. It is probably insulated, heated, maybe air conditioned and it doesn’t leak rain every time it rains. There are probably a couple kinds of welders, a big variety of hand and power tools, air compressors, cutters and grinders. When comparing these modern tools to the old tire pumps, hand jacks, forges and the left-over tools from the horse-power days, we notice a great improvement.

The two story barn, hay mow up above and milking, feeding and manure handling, all done by hand or with a silage or manure fork, on the lower level. The dim light in the barn was created by kerosene lanterns. The milk pails were carried to the strainer, which sat on a milk can. The milk was than either placed in the hand cranked separator or the full cans were moved to the well house and set in cool water to cool the milk. Remember that 10 gallons of milk weighs about 80 pounds and the milk can weighed at least 10 pounds, so lifting these cans was quite a chore.

Today it goes directly from the cow to a storage tank without any human lifting.

For a dairy farmer today to try to go back to the old methods would be virtually impossible.

Our way of life is much easier today. The improvements are created by

outcome. What did you learn from your disappointment? Would it have mattered if you had handled the situation differently? And perhaps the hardest question to ask yourself: Did I set myself up to fail? There is an important lesson in every disappointment. You can learn a lot from some self-examination.

Finally, don’t give up. Many people have surmounted enormous odds to overcome significant disappointments and have risen to the top. No matter what your life goals are, you owe it to yourself to jump over the hurdle and get back in the race. You might have to change your plans, you might adjust your thinking, you might take a different direction. But you will be open to surprising opportunities if you keep hope alive.

Over my lifetime in business, I’ve had plenty of disappointments. It would have been easier to throw in the towel on several different occasions. But I could

not imagine what would happen to me if I let problems dictate my future. I am in charge of my fate, not some outside influences.

You may not be able to prevent disappointment, but you can control your response to it.

electricity and other mechanical devices that do a lot of the work we originally did by hand. In the old days working by hand created food, warmth and shelter.

Today working with machines still gives us the necessities of life, plus more. Our food is easier to make, our dwelling is no longer heated with hand cut wood and the shelters are usually larger. So today we must produce more so that the revenues will pay for today’s “needs”. Hopefully those “needs” are able to create sufficient comfort and contentment to make our lives happier.

November 16, 2017: At 17:20 a report of a car versus deer accident on County 6 near the intersection of County Road 35 in Round Prairie Township.

Mark Formanek of Albany was traveling eastbound on County 6 when he struck a deer with his 2011 Chevrolet Malibu. There were no injuries and minor damage was done to the vehicle.

The vehicle was driven from the scene.

November 18, 2017: At 05:33 Cindy Jacobs of rural Burtrum struck a deer on Co. 2 near Co. 47 with her 2005 GMC Envoy. No injuries and moderate damage were reported.

November 25, 2017: At 22:25 Jennifer Hudalla of 28307 County 5, Long Prairie reported the theft of Christmas decorations. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Todd County Sheriff’s Office at 320-732-2157.

November 27, 2017: At 17:27 Patrick Mensen, rural Grey Eagle, was traveling south on County Road 59 when he struck a deer with his 2004 Chevy Venture causing damage to the right headlight. Mensen was uninjured in the crash.

Obituaries Jerome E. Suchy

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Jerome E. Suchy, 84, of Avon was held Tuesday, N o v e m b e r 28, 2017 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon. Jerome passed away peacefully at home, with family by his side, on Tuesday, November 21, 2017. Rev. Gregory Miller, OSB and Rev. Aaron Nett con-celebrated. Burial was in the parish cemetery at a later date.

Jerome was born on June 28, 1933 in Millerville, Minnesota to Mathias and Marie (Revering) Suchy. He attended school through the 8th grade and then worked on the family farm. He also worked for Nordlund Repair in Urbank. He proudly served in the US Army from 1953-1955 and was stationed in Seoul, Korea. He married Donna Arndt on September 9, 1967 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alexandria.

Together they owned and operated Suchy’s Service Station in Avon until Jerome’s retirement in 1993. He was a member of St. Benedict’s Parish and the Avon American Legion Post #538.

In his early years, Jerome enjoyed hunting, fishing and baseball. Throughout his entire life he enjoyed golfing, fishing and

Clarence Decker, 92 year old resident of Little Falls formerly of Swanville, died Tuesday, November 21 at St. Ottos Care Center in Little Falls. A funeral service was held Sunday, November 26 at 2:00 P.M. St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle.

Clarence Decker was born March 29, 1925 in Swanville to the late Anton and Olga (Koenig) Decker. He attended school in Swanville. He was united in marriage to June Zellman on December 1, 1951. The couple made their home in Fridley, MN. Clarence worked for the Rail Road for many years. After retiring the couple sold

D a v i d F. “Whitey” Kemper, age 68 of Sauk Centre/ Melrose, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 27, 2017 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m.

Friday, December 1 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Gabriel Walz officiating and Rev. Marvin Enneking concelebrating. Inurnment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Melrose with military honors provided by the Little Sauk Legion.

Geisenhof, age 76, of Long Prairie who passed away on Wednesday at CentraCare Health Systems-Long Prairie. Fr. Omar Guanchez will officiate and burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Long Prairie. Family and friends may call from 4-8 pm, Friday and after 8 am Saturday at Williams Dingmann Funeral Home-Stein Chapel, Long Prairie. St. Mary’s Catholic Women will pray the rosary at 4 pm with parish prayers at 7 pm on Friday at the funeral home.

Marie Mildred Geisenhof was born December 4, 1940 in Bruce Township, Todd County, Minnesota, the daughter of Charles and Edna (Koester) Geisenhof. She attended school at District #31 for eight years and high school for one year. She then helped her parents on the farm until she was 18. Marie started working at Dahlman’s Café in Long Prairie, at the young age of 18, waitressing and later became the cook and manager. On October 1, 1970, Marie purchased the café after working there 13 years and renamed it Marie’s Café, a very busy restaurant. On September 4, 1979, Marie sold the café to the Sieve brothers

Whitey Silo until 1980 when he purchased the family farm from his father. Whitey enjoyed racing, traveling, working in his shop, and most of all, riding his Harley.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose where he served on the building and ground committee. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 417 of Little Sauk.

Survivors include his significant other, Paula Prill of Spicer; sons, Todd Kemper (significant other, Kate Jirsa) of Herman and Thomas (Kathy) Kemper of Fargo; grandchildren, Taylor, Taryn, Austin, and Logan; sisters, Lucille (Walt) Rau of Sauk Rapids, Karen (Bill) Massmann of Melrose, Dorie (Al) Heinen of Champlin, Sharon Kemper of Minneapolis, and Mary Kemper of Hopkins; and brother-in-law, Ken Thull of Long Prairie.

Whitey was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Marge Kemper; and sister, Maggie Thull.

Serving as urn bearer will be Jerome “Buddo” Schmitz. Cross bearer will be Taylor Kemper and scripture bearer will be Taryn Kemper.

After retirement, she spent much of her time helping family and friends; and from 1994 until 1999 worked at the Little Falls Greenhouse part time. Marie also cooked at Valley View Assisted Living for a short period of time. Marie enjoyed traveling during her retirement years, going out west and to several places in Europe with friends.

Marie was a member of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, where she cooked many meals and big dinners. She enjoyed doing wood craft, playing cards, square dancing, as well as ballroom dancing.

Marie did a lot of snowmobiling, fourwheeling, summer fishing and ice fishing, and horseback riding at the ranch. She also had a large vegetable garden and did lots of canning. Marie enjoyed her flowers and enjoyed sharing her love of flowers with everyone. Every summer she would fill her yard with beautiful flowers, converting her yard into a flower wonderland. After all of her labor, she would host an open house and engage in conversation serving coffee and cookies with family, friends, and strangers.

Marie’s greatest joy was when family and friends would come over to her house for meals and conversation.

Marie is survived by her brothers, Lloyd (Jackie) Geisenhof, Little Falls, and Ed (Gloria) Geisenhof, Long Prairie; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Joe and Steven, and sisters, Jeanette Perish and Annabelle Tesch, and special friend, Tom Buhl.

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Elsie M. Mergen, age 100, of Albany, was held Wednesday, November 29 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Elsie died at the Mother of Mercy Campus of Care on Friday, November 24.

Elsie was born October 14, 1917 in Melrose, to Ben and Regina (Gieske) Von Wahlde. Elsie grew up in New Munich.

She married Edward Mergen on October 22, 1946 in New Munich. The couple settled in Albany. Elsie worked as a cook with the Albany Schools for several years, retiring in 1982. She was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, the Seven Dolors Christian women, the St. Ann’s Society, the Mother of Mercy Auxiliary and she was past president of the Albany American Legion Auxiliary.

We only bring home about $40,000 a year combined right now, so how should we handle Christmas budgeting in the middle of working our debt snowball?

-Scot Dear Scot, Working to get out of debt can cause stress within a relationship. That stress is sometimes magnified if you’re serious about getting out of debt during the holidays. I’m glad you two are on the same page where your finances are concerned. The fact that you’re committed to becoming debt-free as a couple will go a long way toward ensuring a merrier Christmas.

Just sit down together, have a look at your budget, and ask what she thinks is a reasonable amount to spend on gifts and things while you’re trying to get out of debt. If you think her suggestion is a manageable figure, just give her a hug, tell her you agree, and move on. If you’ve been trying to get out of debt for a while, you might even propose using last year’s Christmas budget.

The important thing is to make sure you listen to each other, and approach this together. On the off chance one of you wants to spend what the other considers to be too much, talk about how and why you arrived at that figure. Then, using your

Hailee plans to attend college for something in the medical field.

Hailee has been on the A Honor Roll since 9th grade, has a 4.0 GPA and has lettered in basketball and volleyball.

She was in school plays in junior high, danced from age three to ninth grade, played softball in grades 7-9, played basketball since sixth grade and volleyball since seventh grade.

Hailee’s favorite thing about school is getting to talk to friends. She advises other students to always try their hardest because it will pay off in the long run.

Hailee’s hobbies include playing sports, hanging out with friends, and eating food. Outside of school she is active at her church and has helped with Bible school at the Lutheran church.

to prepare our youth to lead our nation?”

Will they know the God of the Prophets and the Christ of the Apostles and disciples of the early church? Will they learn and follow and lead with the “faith that was once delivered to the saints?”

Or will they surrender their lives to the attractions of materialism and self-centeredness?

Recent studies reveal that 60% of our youth will no longer attend church when then turn twenty. And even though some churches have vibrant youth programs, they are having no long lasting influence on their lives. Few make a lifelong commitment to Christ, to serving Him. It seems obvious that we are entertaining but not educating.

What needs to be done? Moses, once again, provides insight and advice: “May Your deeds be shown to Your servants, Your splendor to their children.”

The fact of the matter is that His deeds and splendor can only be seen in our lives. If our faith does not work for us, “why” they will ask, “should we believe in Your God?”

Many of those falls can lead to a serious injury, but the good news is falling doesn’t have to be a normal part of aging.

A fall can happen to anyone. Take note of these tips to reduce the risk for you or a loved one over age 65: 1. Get active: “Physical activity can go a long way towards fall prevention,” says the Mayo Clinic.

Some adults may worry that exercise could make them more prone to falling. However, with a doctor’s OK, gentle exercise can be a welcome addition to an older adult’s routine – lowering their fall risk.

In winter, icy sidewalks can bring a whole new set of challenges. Keep them salted or put down kitty litter to improve your traction.

When a living space is safe, bright, and easy to navigate, falls are less likely to occur. Keeping active and in full health can help you and your loved ones stay independent as you age.

4. Something else could happen since you really can’t find two internet experts who can agree on how this will work out.

A few interesting points: 1. The prior FCC Chairman (Tom Wheeler) was starting the process to investigate AT&T and Verizon for violation of the Net Neutrality rules which could have lead to some FCC actions against those two ISP companies. Mr. Wheeler was replaced two weeks later by the current FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, and the investigation has been shelved.

2. Current FCC Chairman Ajit Pai was a lawyer working for Verizon before coming to the position of FCC Chairman.

3. The statement of ‘it will help ISPs finance growth and infrastructure’ sounds like a great thing for users. But studies have shown that large publically held corporations tend to answer to stockholders first. Meaning, if there is more money to be made that increases the ISP’s bottom line, that money will go back to the shareholders nine times out of 10.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I have NO problem paying a premium fee for high-speed internet access. Just by living where we do, we pay a fee well beyond what our friends pay for similar or better internet service in metro areas. A large business internet fee is the cost of doing business in a rural area.

What I DO have issues with is the part where online content could be controlled and tweaked by ISPs to taint the information that today’s public consumes and believes as factual from the internet.

It stands to reason that a political organization with enough money could dictate what information is allowed to pass through the internet world for consumer access. This could lead to information that is in support of a political rival or about a contrary idea being censored while information in support of ISPs ownership’s beliefs is given preferential treatment.

This could make the Russian Facebook ads mess look like child’s play.

I think the Title II Communications Act regarding internet access will be changed. There are some things that could be freed up that might help our rural ISPs to free up capital for infrastructure investments. By John Young By now I am sure you have heard about the discussions around Net Neutrality and how it will affect your daily use of the internet.

Net Neutrality is the principle that internet service providers should enable access to all content and applications regardless of the source, and without favoring or blocking particular products or websites.

Changing the current net neutrality would mean that your local and national ISPs (internet service provider) would have the ability to charge a fee to either the end user (you) or the content services (Youtube, Netflix, Facebook, Amazon Prime). These additional fees would be to let their higher bandwidth content flow at an unrestricted rate.

This is causing quite a stir across the United States of America.

The FCC Chairman Ajit Pai has been a strong proponent against the current Net Neutrality rules governing the ISPs (that ISPs are considered common carriers and can not vary how they carry content). He feels these rules need to be changed to help ISPs build new infrastructure and invest in a better internet.

Major tech companies have also lined up on opposing sides of the debate.

Google, Apple, Amazon, and Netflix support net neutrality, while internet service providers (ISPs) including Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T have long rallied against it.

To give you an idea of what this might look like if Title II of the Communications Act is revoked (the act that made ISPs a common carrier), here are a few potential thoughts.

1. Things would stay the same for the end users.

2. Large ISPs would start to cut deals with large content providers who would pay for premium content flow to end users; making it an uneven playing field for new or upstart content providers (or content sources that don’t share the same beliefs as the large ISPs). These costs would invariably be passed on to the end user (us) in increased monthly fees.

3. ISPs could pass the extra bandwidth costs off to consumers. There are models out there right now internationally where consumers can buy ‘upgrades’ to their current cell phone data service to add a video, social media, or gaming option to their base data package. A vari-

Mason is the son of Chad and Tanya Landowski. He enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends, and he is part of the youth group. In the future, Mason plans to go to college and specialize in carpentry.

Anderson congratulates local broadband grant recipients Rep. Paul Anderson, R-Starbuck, issued the following statement regarding Tuesday’s announcement from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development of 39 broadband grants totaling more than $26 million to bring broadband access to unserved and underserved parts of the state. Some grants leveraged funding from the Connect America Funding from the federal government, helping stretch funding from the state.

A 23rd Letter to America

But the history of Mankind has shown the inability of Man to follow God’s Word.

The perverted mind of some call Good Evil, and Evil Good.

After killing eight precious innocent human beings and injuring others, the terrorist in New York city said, “he felt good.”

Why? Because to him evil is good!

Good, because Islam teaches that killing unbelievers gets, not only the killer, but 70 family members to Heaven. Where the killer will be rewarded with 72 pretty virgins and privacy with

those virgins.

However, the only two places murderers go is Hell, and later the Lake of Fire, where fire, brimstone, and darkness co-exist.

No telling why the Las Vegas shooter thought murdering 58 and injuring hundreds, was good. Maybe fame!

So why does a large number of American judges, public figures, politicians, and general public, support the evil practice of killing innocent unborn babies?

They are calling evil good, and going against God’s command to “be righteous and good.”

Repent, and turn away from evil, is God’s will.

You already know you need to save throughout the year for holiday festivities. But we all have little things that, no matter what, sneak up on us.

Here’s a list of “gotcha” items to include in your holiday budget: Stamps Uncle Billy is waiting on his Christmas card. Unless you plan on driving to Toledo to deliver it in person, you’re going to need a stamp — plus about 30 more for the rest of your family and friends. Even though they’re inexpensive individually, the cost can add up quickly.

Wrapping Paper A pair of velvet slippers in a brown bag just doesn’t have the same effect.

You can do so much better than that! Go the extra foot and buy some nice Christmas wrapping paper. While you’re at it, go ahead and include some extra cash

By A. John Peters, Department Head and an Instructor Computer Systems The FCC is proposing to eliminate net neutrality. Net neutrality is defined as: the Internet is a public utility like the phone company. Everyone is equal in the eyes of the Internet.

How does this affect us as rural Internet users? First, a little background. I already pay for Internet access for my web servers. The more I pay, the faster the connection to send information out. Netflix, Google, and the news stations already pay a lot of money for their connections.

If net neutrality is ended, the phone companies (CenturyLink, Verizon, Charter, etc.) can slow down our access to anything they want. If they favor one news outlet over another, they could slow down Fox News over MSNBC or vice versa.

It’s time to make a vow. Let’s promise ourselves we won’t wait until the last minute to take care of the stuff we know is coming. Keep these things in mind while you’re out shopping this holiday season!
