Rewarding employees reaps company rewards

By Harvey Mackay According to various surveys, seven out of eight people go home every night with a feeling that they work for an organization that doesn’t care about them. That equates to 130 million people in the United States who go home feeling somewhat used and abused, and with a sense that they don’t matter.

el, it attempts to shine a light in every corner of its business and look for the goodness in people. To help, it has created several award programs. One award is the Guiding Principles of Leadership SSR Award. Chapman is a car nut and had a Chevrolet SSR truck that he offered to one of his plants. The winner gets to drive it for a week. The program worked and expanded, so the company now has 17 SSR trucks.

“Everybody is nominating people,” Chapman said. “In a plant of 450 people, we had 120 to 180 nominees. Think of this: People took the time to talk about the goodness in other people.”

For every nominee, the company sends a letter to the employee’s home, saying, “Your husband/daughter/son/ brother/mother was nominated for their goodness. And let me tell you what people said about them.” Then it’s a secret when the winner is picked. The family is invited to the ceremony as a surprise.

Chapman said he’s interviewed about 300 people who have won this award around the country. They tell him it’s so significant because it’s from their peers. Award winners are often asked about their SSR truck by friends, and they describe the leadership award they won. And every time people say, “I wish I worked for a company like that.”

Chapman was visiting one of the company’s recent plant acquisitions in Green Bay, Wis. He asked an employee what he thought about the new leadership model.

He said: “I’m now talking to my wife more.”

Chapman said, “I don’t understand.”

The employee explained: “Do you know what it feels like to work in a place where you walk in in the morning and you punch a card to verify that you came in on time? You walk to your work station, and people tell you what to do.

They never ask you what you think. You do ten things right, and you never hear a word. But you get one thing wrong, and you never hear the end of it. You go home and you don’t feel very good about yourself. And when you don’t feel very good about yourself, you’re not really there for your family.”

Another award program used by Barry-Wehmiller is the H3 award for heads, hands and hearts. Winners get to drive an H3 Hummer for a week. There’s also an award for innovation.

The High 5 award provides employees with a dinner for the employee and spouse or family member. “We send a letter to the employee’s home and thank them for making a difference in our company,” Chapman said. “It’s kind of like a high five.”

When the recession hit Barry-Wehmiller hard in 2008-09, Chapman had a tough decision to make. Orders dropped 35 percent. Employees were concerned about layoffs. He reasoned, “What would a loving family do if a family Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

So the company and employee leaders came up with a plan where all employees would take four weeks off without pay. They could pick the time that would fit best with their families.

The company also suspended its 401(k) match.

“Employees didn’t feel they did it to make the company more profitable,” Chapman said. “They felt they did it to save somebody else’s job. It was a gift.

It was not a sacrifice.”

True to form, when the company rebounded quicker than anticipated, the company not only reinstated the 401(k)

match, but paid back the missed company match.

Just another way to reward employees.

Obituaries Gordon J. Kohout

Gordon J. Kohout, age 72 of Melrose, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 family at the Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A funeral service was held at 4 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012 at the PattonSchad Funeral Home in Melrose. Private family interment was in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.

Gordon John Kohout was born September 14, 1940 in Renville, Minnesota to Joseph and Anna (Houdek) Kohout. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1961 to 1965. Gordon married Marion Wohnoutka on August 18, 1962 in Bechyn, Minnesota. Their union was blessed with ten wonderful children. Gordon and Marion later divorced. He was a civil engineer for the city of St. Cloud and also farmed.

Gordon spent the last 16 years with his significant other, Sharon Herzog. During that time he enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, and spending the last seven winters in Arizona. Gordon also had

a passion for John Deere tractors. He was a member of American Legion Post #101 in Melrose. Gordon was also a member of the Eagles and Moose Club in Arizona.

Survivors include his significant other, Sharon Herzog of Melrose; children, Deborah Kohout of Colorado Springs, CO, Darryl (Lisa Rutten) Kohout of Grey Eagle, Dean (Jennifer) Kohout of Burtrum, Duane Kohout of Eau Claire, WI, Dawn (Kris) Paul of Coon Rapids, Dwight (Molly) Kohout of Albany, Doris (John) Hentges of Otsego, Deanna Braun of Sartell, Denise (Brian) Massmann of Sauk Rapids, and Darin Kohout of Albany; siblings, Donald (Marlene) Kohout of Olivia, Bernard (Lorraine) Kohout of Danube, Joe (Jean) Kohout of Chokio, Donna (Clayton) Breezee of Atwater, Diane (Mark) Hempel of Denver, CO, and Dennis Kohout of Atwater; step-children, Shawn (Karin) Herzog of Phoenix, AZ, Shane (Marilyn) Herzog of Phoenix, AZ, and Brian Herzog of Melrose; 11 granchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; and 1 step-greatgrandchild.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Services celebrating Cardi Sue Cruz, newborn, was held Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at the Seven Dolors Parish Cemetery in Albany. Father Michael Naughton, OSB officiated. Cardi passed away peacefully Saturday morning, November 24, 2012, at the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Cardi is survived by her parents Brandon and Heather (Shay) Cruz, Albany; her grandparents Sue & Randy Moening, Melrose; Jose Cruz, St. Cloud; and Kevin & Sue Shay, Albany; her great-grandparents Dennis & Virginia Shay, Albany; Jim & Betty Petermier, Melrose; and Alice Moening; as well as many other family and friends.

Richard J. Pohlmann, age 81 of Melrose, died Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at the Melrose Area Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 30 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

Friday at the church in Melrose.

Richard Joseph Pohlmann was

born November 3, 1931 in Melrose, Minnesota to Frederick and Agnes (Ossenbeck) Pohlmann. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Richard farmed all his life which was his enjoyment.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose.

Survivors include his brother, Edwin Pohlmann of New Munich; niece, Doris (Andy) Vogel of Savage; and nephew, Tom Pohlmann of Dallas.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alphonse Pohlmann and Roman Pohlmann; sisters, Bernice Schiemann and Rosemary Otteson.

Serving as urn bearer will be Doris Vogel. Cross bearer will be Abby Vogel and scripture bearer will be Matt Vogel.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Clotilda M. “Tillie” Eickhoff

Clotilda M. “Tillie” Eickhoff, age 91 of Albany, died peacefully on Saturday, November 24, 2012 while on Hospice at the Albany Area Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m.

Tuesday, November 27 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Michael Naughton, O.S.B. officiating.

Entombment was at the parish cemetery.

Clotilda Mary Eickhoff was born August 2, 1921 in Richmond, Minnesota to Henry B. and Margaret (Schloeder) Braegelmann. She married Raymond Eickhoff May 6, 1947 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Richmond.

Tillie and Ray raised seven children and farmed south of Albany for over 25 years.

After retiring from farming, they lived in Cold Spring for about 13 years and were members of Jacobs Prairie Catholic Church. Recently, Tillie lived at Mother of Mercy Assisted Living Apartments and Nursing Home. Besides farming and raising her children, Tillie enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, playing cards and BINGO. She volunteered for several years at the Mother Seton Store in Albany.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Ray Eickhoff of Albany; children, Roger (Ruth) of St. Joseph, Jan (Leon) Schilmoeller of Cottage Grove, Ken (Kitty) of Albany, Gary (Sandy) of Richmond, Linda (Brian) Johnson of St. Joseph and Sue (Neil) Parker of Centennial, CO; 18 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Viola Nistler of St. Cloud; and sister-in-law, Valeria Braegelmann of Albany.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Judy Eickhoff; parents; brothers, Ludwig “Louie”, Othmar and Martin Braegelmann; infant grandson, Joseph Schilmoeller; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Braegelmann; brother-inlaw, Erwin Nistler; and recently her grandson-in-law, Jon Nelson.

Serving as casket bearers were her children, Roger, Jan, Ken, Gary, Linda and Sue. Cross bearer was Amazih Eickhoff and scripture bearer was Chelsea Parker. Gift bearers were Eric, Matt, Justin and Jason Eickhoff. Readers were Tina Eickhoff and Sheree Schuler.

Petitions were read by Shannon Eickhoff and Holli Nelson.

Raymond Hoppe

Raymond Hoppe, age 85 of New Munich, died peacefully T u e s d a y m o r n i n g , November 27, 2012 in his home surrounded by his loving family.

Raymond Boniface Hoppe was born June 2, 1927 to Herman and Anna (Schaefer) in New Munich, Minnesota. He attended a local country school for 8 years and graduated from Melrose High School.

He married Laura Fuchs on June 5, 1951 at the St. Andrews Catholic Church in Greenwald, Minnesota.

They met during a dance at the Spring Hill Ballroom. They first farmed at St. Nicholas for four years, then at Greenwald for two years before establishing their own farmstead at Freeport. There they raised their 8 children and farmed for 32 years. Ray and Laura retired from farming in 1989 and moved to New Munich. In those years they enjoyed playing cards and even went on to be become great square dancers – 28 years of dancing.

In his spare time, Ray enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Ray was an avid farmer and even after retirement continued to help his children on their farms. Ray did custom

Gerald Bergren

The Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, November 29, 2012, at the St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin for Gerald Bergren, age 84 of St Martin.

Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Gerald died peacefully Sunday at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany from Parkinson’s. There will be a visitation after 10:00 AM Thursday at the St. Martin Catholic Church.

Gerald was born July 10, 1928 in Little Falls to Oscar and Myrtle (Fye) Bergren. He graduated from Little Falls High School and he served in the U.S. Army from 1951 – 1952. During his life, he lived in Little Falls, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Sobieski, St. Martin and Albany.

Gerald married Lorraine Birchem on September 15, 1953 in Swanville.

Gerald owned “Jerry’s Bar” with his wife in Sobieski and St. Martin from 1960-1971. He worked for the U.S. Post

combining for ten years and spent many summer months with his son, Larry, combining as far as Texas. Ray and Laura did a lot of traveling thru the years including Hawaii and Washington D.C. to visit their daughter, Marcie, who was stationed at various Air Force Bases. One of Ray’s daughters, Lisa, participated in the German Foreign Exchange Program while in high school and traveled to West Germany where she became very good friends with her foreign exchange family. Thereafter, Ray and Laura traveled to West Germany three times to visit this foreign exchange family.

Ray is survived by his wife of 61 years, Laura: eight children: Larry (Bev) Hoppe of Osakis, Marcie (D’Mitch) Hoppe-Berrio, of Rosamond, California, June (Deacon Rick) Scherping, of Freeport, Herb (Carol) Hoppe, of Osakis, Mary Kay (Mike) Herkenhoff, of Freeport, Jim (Shelly) Hoppe, of Freeport, Rob (Kris) Hoppe, of Freeport, Lisa (Brent) Funk, of Albertville; 36 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren: one sister Philomene Kleinfehn, of Osakis, two brothers: Edmund Hoppe, of Blaine, and Alcuin Hoppe, of Jasmine, Illinois.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12:00 pm on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Freeport. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 30 from 4-9 pm with parish prayers at 5 pm. Inurnment will be at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, New Munich.

Helen H. Lemke

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 29, 2012, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Prairie for Helen H. Lemke, age 92, of Long Prairie, who passed away on Sunday, November 25th at CentraCare Healthsystem in Long Prairie. Pastor Noah Wehrspann will officiate and burial will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Long Prairie at a later date. Friends and family may call from 10:30 to 11:30 AM on Thursday at the church.

Helen Henrietta Schloesser was born on June 9, 1920 in Hawley, MN to the late Arthur and Mathilda (Eide) Schloesser. She graduated from Pine City High School in 1940. Helen then went to Seattle, WA to train as a nurse from 1941 to 1944. She was united in marriage to Fred Lemke on Nov. 17, 1944 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Seattle, WA, and in 1946 they moved to Long Prairie. Helen worked as a nurse at Long Prairie Hospital for 18 years and as a Nursing Supervisor at Long Prairie Nursing Home for another 15 years. She enjoyed this work immensely, and was an inspiration for many other nurses.

Helen was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Prairie and

Clarence E. Zellner Office for over 27 years, retiring as Post Master in 1990. He was a member of the St. Martin Catholic Church, Lake Henry American Legion Post #428, the Little Falls VFW Post 1112 and the St. Martin Volunteer Fire Department Gerald is survived by his children, Diana Bergren, Burnsville; Sandra (Mark) Dirkes, Avon; Judy (Ken) Turner, Mount Juliet, TN; and daughter-in-law Nancy Bergren, Pine Island. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Trent and Eric Dirkes, Laura (John) Bazal, Ashley Bergren and Katie and Shelby Turner.

Gerald is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lorraine in 2007, his son, Gary Bergren, in 2011, his brothers and sisters, Eldrige Bergren, Russell Bergren, Dale Bergren, Genevieve Bobo, Phyllis Young and Beverly Remer.

Clarence E. Zellner, 91 year old resident of Burtrum, passed away Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012, at his home. A Mass of Christian Burial for Clarence E. Clarence was born April 12, 1921 in Elmdale Township, Morrison County, MN to the late Ben and Helen ‘Kalis’ Zellner. He grew up on the family farm in Elmdale Township and attended school in Upsala, MN. Clarence lived his whole life on the family farm near Pine Lake. He raised hogs, chickens and dairy farmed

their Ladies Circle. She was a cancer survivor and belonged to a support group, and also worked in Hospice care and visiting shut-ins. Helen was involved in Al-Anon, the V.F.W., the Homemakers and Kitchen Klan, as well as the L.W.M.L. where she enjoyed making quilts and visiting. Helen was a wonderful cook and baker, especially cakes which she decorated for many special occasions. She exhibited many of her canned fruits and vegetables, and baked goods at the Todd County Fair.

Helen enjoyed traveling, playing cards, reading, crocheting and embroidery, and attending concerts and plays.

Helen will be dearly missed by her children, Dennis (Barb) Lemke of Fridley, MN, David (Daintree) Lemke of Alexandria, and Pam (Owen) Bohnsack of Pharr, TX; brother, Gerald (Jane) Schloesser of Tiverton, RI; halfbrother, Richard (Thede) Patterson of Mora, MN; sisters-in-law, Judy (Dave) Ammerman of Isanti, MN, and Sally Steiner of Mora; 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren.

Memories in Miniature opening is Sunday, December 2, 2012 at the annual KringleFest Event held at the Stearns History Museum located at 235 33rd Avenue South in St. Cloud. The exhibit will run through December 31, 2014.

People make and collect miniatures for many reasons. Some preserved memories of family and community by carving wood. Some made models to honor a time, a place, of people in the past. Some used them to imagine what might have been.

These miniatures are rightly called “folk art,” the work of people with a passion for what they loved and a yen to create. Some of these decidedly uncommon artists spent thousands of hours meticulously building their miniatures to the exact inch. Others crafted them quickly with a pocket knife. From Willard Gerhenbeck’s circus to Clifford Balder’s model of the Sakry farm in Dehulm; the U-control planes designed, built and flown by Robert Green, father of community leader Les Green; and the Metzroth’s showpiece, the Red River ox cart, visitors will be enchanted and amazed.

As you walk through this exhibit, we invite you to think about how you keep memories yourself. Does your family have an object that is a memory keeper

for its history? Do you scrapbook? Keep photos? Keep your kids’ school projects?

Maybe you even have miniatures of your own. Or, maybe you surround yourself with different kinds of objects that carry memories through their use (Grandma’s china, Dad’s hammer, a favorite book?)

We hope this exhibit sparks discussion and memories of your own history and traditions. The Stearns History Museum is honored to display this collection of Memories in Miniature.

There’s Nothing to Fear in Fear Itself Minnesota Through The Lens: The sabotage began. “What’s wrong

By Saralee Perel Most people think I’m normal. I’m not.

Usually, I’m in overdrive on the nervous wreck meter, such as when I was recently invited to hold a book sign-

ing at a bookshop.

I’m reliving the panic in my dreams.

This has resulted in a severe sleep disorder … for my husband.

“Bob,” I screamed, as I pounded on his head last night while he was asleep.

“I’m having a nightmare.” Our startled dog jumped on the bed and tore the quilt to death.

The cats joined the terror party by leaping onto Bob’s face and yowling at higher notes than Mariah Carey could reach if she smashed her thumb with a sledge hammer. “Sweetheart,” I whispered. “Are you awake?”

“Saralee, I’m begging you. Please don’t tell me another nightmare.”

“I was at my signing when a woman came over dressed like a zombie. She hissed, ‘You’re a rotten writer. Everybody hates your book. And you put on 30 pounds.’ Bob! It wasn’t a costume. It was my mother!”

“Oh God, no!” He covered his ears.

Most of us have anxiety. Maybe it’s a dread of dentist appointments, airplanes, spiders or social situations. Oh, there are a billion examples. Although I was a psychotherapist for 22 years, I’ve learned more about anxiety from my own shtick.

Struggling to cover up nervousness actually makes it worse. How do we tame it? By not trying to hide it or stop it. Saying, “I’m so nervous that my hands are shaking,” or, “My neck is beet red,” or commenting on whatever our outward signs of anxiety are, will take away its power.

If there are people who think less of me for being scared, that’s their shortcoming.

My sister-in-law was at my signing. She lives far away and never reads my columns, so she won’t see this.

When she does her superior know-it-all thing, I respond like the mature wise woman I’m known to be: I make faces behind her back.

Two seconds before entering the bookstore, she said, “Are you nervous?”

“Yes.”

with you? You shouldn’t be nervous.”

“Well, I’m excited too.”

“You should be.”

I stomped my feet. “I just said I am!”

Bob gave me a knowing look that meant, “You’re never going to win. Give it up.” Naturally he was right.

While signing books, my hands trembled. While connecting with readers whose words touched my heart deeply, my head shook. While thanking so many wonderful souls for coming to meet me, well, I stuttered through tears.

Did it matter that I was nervous? Of course not.

Three things mattered: 1. The fact that I had a wondrous time in spite of being scared.

2. The beautiful words I heard from readers along with the overwhelming love I received.

3. And that my sister-in-law saw every single bit of it.

Confidence to Enter, Hebrews 10:19-25 To understand Hebrews 10, a person must first understand the tabernacle/temple.

Our church has a video that does a good overview but even that takes an hour. The shortest way to explain the need for the tabernacle/temple is that mankind is sinful yet God wants to be with us. Working on the fact that God does not change and He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow we must also conclude that the way He did things in the Old Testament is the same way He does it today.

For God to be near to fallen people we must first be cleansed. The sacrifices and rituals surrounding the tabernacle/ temple pointed God’s people to the future sacrifice of the Messiah that would save them and take away their sin. That person was Jesus.

The structure of the temporary and mobile tabernacle was simply doubled in size for the permanent temple in Jerusalem. God’s original plan for the space of worship called the tabernacle was to have a dividing wall all the way around it with one gate to get in. There is only one way to eternal life and that is through Jesus, who refers to Himself as the Gate.

An altar stood just inside the gate and this is where the blood of various animal sacrifices would be shed to pay for the sins of those entering. After the altar was a bronze bowl filled with water to ritually wash the hands of the person entering.

Through the sacrifice of Christ believers are made clean, and it is only necessary for hands and feet to be washed. (John 13:1-20) After the bronze bowl you could actually enter the Tabernacle structure. Inside was a place called the Holy Place. A lamp stand with seven lamps lit the room to teach worshippers that God would bring light into a dark world. A table contained 12 loaves of bread, one for each tribe symbolizing how God feeds all his people. The front third of the room was

divided off by a large curtain. Behind this curtain was the Ark of the Covenant and the physical place on earth where God’s presence would be with his people. Outside of this area was an incense altar where prayers could be offered but no one could enter this Most Holy Place except the High Priest and that was only once a year after blood was shed to cover his sins in a special way.

This is the imagery the writer of Hebrews is referring to when he writes about the holy place. Imagery that showed people the only way into God’s presence and that was through Jesus.

Imagery that represented the blood Jesus would shed to take away our sins.

The imagery of cleansing water points to Holy Baptism the bread points us to the Lord’s Supper where Jesus gave up His Body and Blood for us on the cross.

Imagery that tells us that when we pray Jesus himself hears us as he sits at the right hand of the Father.

Jesus is the way God brings us as sinners into His presence and that has been true from the very beginning when Adam and Eve needed a Savior too. May all who believe in Jesus as their Savior have confidence to enter into God’s very presence. Amen.

A young boy was lying on his back by a stream holding a string in his hand.

Like the boy, we are here on this earth. But our Lord, like the kite, is beyond us in heaven. The string that binds our hearts to our Father in heaven is our faith. And the Holy Spirit is the One who connects us to Him and gives power to our prayers. We may not see God all of the time, but through faith we know that He is there – above us, beyond us, connected to us, waiting on us – to call upon Him and feel His “tug.” God wants us to stay in touch with Him through our faith in Him and feel His presence in our lives.

Obituaries Darlene Christen

The Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Darlene Christen, age 52 of Farming, was held Wednesday, November 28 2012, at All Saints St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holdingford.

Darlene passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2012, at the Paynesville Hospital.

Darlene was born April 13th, 1960 in Little Falls to Gerhard and Marcella

Local Municipality Minutes (Nicholas) Senart. She married Mark Christen and the couple lived in Farming.

Darlene is survived by her husband, Mark; children, Jenny Jackson (Kenneth), Maplewood; Scott Christen, Farming; mother, Marcella Senart, Sauk Rapids; sisters, Sharon Pilarski, Coon Rapids; Mary Gouge (Mark Sendy), Foley; Beverly Stoppelman, Foley; Arline (Kirk) Sauer, St. Joseph; Rosalie (Rodney) Deters, Rice; brother, Daniel Senart (AnnMarie Mohs), Upsala; grandchildren Raquel, Issac & Nakeysha.

She is preceded in death by her father, brothers, John, Dennis, Patrick Senart and sister-in-law, Teresa Senart.

Evelyn Catherine Notsch Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Evelyn Catherine Notsch, age 94 of Albany will be 11 AM Saturday, D e c e m b e r 1st, 2012 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church.

Father Michael Naughton will officiate, and burial will take place in the parish cemetery following the service. Evelyn died peacefully in her sleep early Wednesday morning surrounded by her family at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany.

There will be a visitation from 4 to 8 PM Friday, November 30th at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in Albany and again from 10 AM until the time of the service Saturday morning at the church. Parish prayers will take place at 4 PM Friday evening at the funeral home. The Catholic Aid and St. Ann’s Society will pray the rosary at 6 PM. Evelyn was born September 23, 1918 in St. Joseph to Alois “A.G.” and Hattie (Bovy) Theisen. She married Herman Notsch on July 20th, 1940 in St. Joseph. The couple farmed in many areas including St. Joseph and Jacobs Prairie before eventually retiring to

Albany. Besides working as a home maker and mother raising her seven children Evelyn took great pride in her seamstress abilities. She sewed many beautiful wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses, and draperies over the years.

She also had a great love of flowers and gardening. She was a member of St. Ann’s Society, Catholic Aid, and was also a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church of Albany.

Evelyn is survived by her children Ronald (Evie) Notsch, St. Cloud; Loren (Yvonne) Notsch, St. Joseph; Judy (Gary) Meyer, Freeport; Wayne (Lois) Notsch, Little Falls; Ricky (Laurie) Notsch, Chokio, MN; Glenn (MaryKay) Notsch, Phoenix, AZ; her sixteen grandchildren, twenty four great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; and her siblings Olivia Ley, St. Cloud; Marian (Clarence) Kremer, St. Cloud; Luverne Griffin, Ogden, UT. She is preceded in death by her mother and father Alois and Hattie Theisen, her husband Herman Notsch who passed in 2004, her daughter Marilyn Simon, her brothers Raymond, Albert and Walter Theisen, her infant sister Mathilda, her twin grand daughters Beth and Becky Meyer, and her son-inlaw Francis Simon.

Arrangements are being made with the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home of Albany.

The 24th annual Festival of Lights is from 6-8:00 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, in front of St. Cloud Hospital, 1406 Sixth Ave. N. The event is free and open to the public.

In addition to the traditional holiday lighting ceremony at 7:00 p.m., there will be horse-drawn trolley rides, reindeer, holiday carols by the Tech High School Chamber Choir, a living nativity presented by Messiah Lutheran Church

DNR reminds hunters to not throw away unused either-sex deer permits Hunters who failed to tag a deer or use their either-sex permit during the firearms season may still have a chance to put some venison in the freezer, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

“An either-sex permit from the firearms season remains valid for the muzzleloader season if you have the appropriate license,” said Leslie McInenly, DNR big game program leader. “The either-sex permit is valid for either season, in the same area, provided you have a license for that season.”

The provision applies only to the lottery areas.

McInenly reminds hunters in the lottery areas that they are only allowed to tag one deer during the 2012 hunting season. They may not use bonus tags.

They may be able to harvest additional deer in managed, intensive or special hunt areas.

Hunters who wish to take advantage of this change must have a license for the muzzleloader season. Licenses can be purchased at any of the 1,500 license agent locations in the state, via telephone at 888-665-4236 or www.mndnr. gov/licenses. A convenience fee is add-

ed to telephone and Internet license purchases.

The Minnesota muzzleloader season runs Saturday, Nov. 24 until Sunday, Dec. 9.
