Unselfishness has a special place in business

By Harvey Mackay Bill Bradley recently spoke to a group of Minnesota Timberwolves season ticketholders.

The topic wasn’t his stellar career, basketball strategy or memorable wins. Instead, he talked about unselfishness. After 40 years of traveling America as a Hall-of-Fame basketball player and a U.S. Senator, the Rhodes Scholar has a lot of stories to tell about the remarkable unselfish accomplishments of people both famous and unknown. He features them during his weekly American Voices program on Sirius/XM Radio.

Bradley briefly talked about his two NBA championships with the New York Knicks and how unselfish his teams were.

They wanted to be champions more than they wanted individual achievements.

They realized being a champion is the highest individual achievement.

That’s why I love team sports. Players learn not only the power of teamwork, but how to be unselfish, regardless of their individual abilities.

Another basketball superstar, Michael Jordan, won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls. His personal accomplishments on the court give him bragging rights beyond compare. Yet he wrote in his book “I Can’t Accept Not Trying”: “There are plenty of teams in every sport that have great players and never win titles. Most of the time, those players aren’t willing to sacrifice for the greater good of the team.

The funny thing is, in the end, their unwillingness to sacrifice only makes individual goals more difficult to achieve.

One thing I believe to the fullest is that if you think and achieve as a team, the individual accolades will take care of themselves. Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.”

Business should operate the same way. Every organization has star performers whose skills and talents are evident. If they are smart, they have developed as their biggest asset the ability to work with others.

So many projects require teamwork in order to come to a successful conclusion. But watch what happens when one member of the team claims the victory.

Morale goes in the tank. The next group effort becomes a competition. Communication is stifled. The results suffer for lack of a variety of ideas.

President Harry Truman summed it up so well: “It is amazing what you can

accomplish if you don’t care who gets the credit.”

The example needs to come from the top. Management needs to send a clear message that every member of the organization is vital to the success of the group. Good leaders must demonstrate sincere unselfishness when celebrating achievements and share the credit and successes with the group.

We have marvelous examples of unselfishness throughout our American history. Ask any military veteran about how loyalty and unselfishness were drilled into them throughout their training and service. They often had to depend on each other in dangerous situations. And while you’re at it, thank them for their service to our country.

Perhaps the most incredible example of unselfishness is the little checkmark you might have on your driver’s license – as an organ donor. Blood donors also make my radar screen for sharing a precious gift with someone they will never know, but who will be ever grateful.

Obituaries Helen M. Fritzlar

Roger L. Dickinson

Helen M. Fritzlar, age 70 of Elrosa, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, November 21, 2013 after a long journey battling with a brain tumor and its side effects at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, November 25 at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa with Rev. Dick McGuire officiating. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery following the lunch.

Helen Marie Nathe was born January 19, 1943 near Little Sauk, Minnesota to Leo and Dorothy (Younkin) Nathe. She was baptized on January 24, 1943 and received Sacrament of Holy Communion on December 8, 1950 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. On October 1, 1956 Helen was confirmed at St. Paul’s Catholic Church. She graduated from Sauk Centre High School on June 1, 1961.

On June 1, 1963 she married Harold Fritzlar at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.

Harold and Helen farmed with his sister and brother-in-law, Marion and LeRoy Frisell on the family farm from 1969 until 1973.

Helen and Harold then took over the family farm until the farm auction on April 1, 2003.

Helen enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren and for several other families in the Elrosa area. In January of 2009, Helen moved into the CentraCare nursing home in Sauk Centre.

She was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa, Elrosa

Helen enjoyed playing cards, sewing and quilting, gardening, canning, and baking her homemade buns. She also loved watching Wheel of Fortune and I Love Lucy, along with listening to KASM and the Minnesota Twins.

Survivors include her children, Linda (Steve) Hieserich of Elrosa, Barb (Tom) Frieler of Melrose, Roger (Jess) Fritzlar of Silver Lake, Rita (John) Nething of Belgrade, Sandy (Cory) Buckman of Lakeville, Julie (Scott) Jensen of Belgrade, and Vicky (Tim) Janssen of St. Michael; grandchildren, Tracy and Katie Hieserich; Kurt and Jacob Frieler; Andrew Potter, Melissa and Matthew Fritzlar; Jonathan, Jesse, Jenna, and Joshua Schaeffer, Abraham, Benjamin, Cynthia, Malinda, John II, and David Nething; Kennedy and Addison Buckman; Tyler, Ryan, and Noah Jensen; and Parker, Hunter, and Wyatt Janssen; brothers and sisters, Ruth (Robert) Rieland of Sauk Centre, Donna (Eugene) Illies of Elrosa, Jim (Ann) Nathe of West Union, Frank Nathe of Buford, Georgia, Al (Clara) Nathe of Melrose, and Willie (Georgine) Nathe of Freeport; and sister-in-law, Barb Nathe of New Munich.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Fritzlar on August 4, 2010; daughter, Cynthia Fritzlar who was born October 16, 1963 and died November 9, 1963; parents, Leo and Dorothy Nathe; and brother, Charles Nathe.

Serving as casket bearers were Mark Fritzlar, David Fritzlar, Wayne Frisell, Glenn Frisell, Brent Frisell, and Darin Adolphsen.

Cross bearer was Kurt Frieler and scripture bearer was Tracy Hieserich. Gift bearers were Marilyn Marthaler, Nancy Lingle, and Nicole Reuter.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Sauk Centre.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, N o v e m b e r 25th, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Anna, for Rose H. Jonas who died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013 at Assumption home.

Rev. Gregory Mastey and Rev. Eberhard Schefers concelebrated and burial followed in the parish cemetery.

Rose was born to Henry and Mary (Tromboli) Wander in Spring Hill, MN. She married Arnold J. Jonas on June 14, 1950 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Anna and Immaculate Conception Christian Women.

Rose was a great cook and was sure to make the favorite meal of anyone

Chapter 238 O.E.S., American Legion Post 0260, VFW Post 8731. He was a Korean War Navy Veteran and former vice president in the Twin Cities’ mortgage industry. At retirement, he and wife Pat created a set of uniquely designed rules and regulations manuals to facilitate the processing and underwriting of mortgage loans. Twenty four years after they were created, lenders across the nation continue to benefit from these publications. Roger loved his family, his Cessna 150 and his delta wing ultralight. He enjoyed making new friends in Monticello, where he lived the last 21 years of his life.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents; and son Roger Gary Dickinson.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Patricia Kielmeyer; sons Steve Dickinson of Williston, ND, and John (Cindy) Dickinson of Boise, ID; daughters Sara (Kevin) Broman of St. Michael, and Laura (Joe) Zelenak of Corcoran; brother James (LaVonne) Dickinson of Starbuck, MN; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and aunt (second mother) Addie Young of Grey Eagle.

-Jennifer Dear Jennifer, No, you should not.

M o r t g a g e accelerator programs are similar to the biweekly mortgage deals floating around out there. Paying on your mortgage biweekly is fine. Paying for the privilege is not.

In the biweekly mortgage program, you make a half-payment every two weeks. By doing this you will pay off the typical 30-year note in about 22 years.

It works because there are 26 two-week periods in a year, and 26 half-payments equals 13 whole payments. It pays off your mortgage early because you’re making an extra payment every year.

That’s what’s doing it. There’s nothing magical about every two weeks; it’s the fact that you’re paying extra principal.

Instead of paying your mortgage company an unnecessary “nominal fee,” just make an extra payment each year. Or, pay one-twelfth of a payment as a principal reduction with a separate check, in a separate envelope, every month. By doing that, you’ll pay off the loan just as quickly as with a biweekly arrangement.

If you’re just now taking out a mortgage and your lender can do a biweekly setup at no cost, then that’s great. Take them up on the offer. But

Obituary Martha K. Schlicht

Memorial Services celebrating the life of Martha K. Schlicht, 104, of Freeport were held on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Father Roger Klassen, OSB officiated and burial followed in the parish cemetery. Martha passed away peacefully Thursday evening, November 21, 2013 at Pine Villa Nursing Home in Melrose.

Martha was born on September 12, 1909 to Henry and Anna (Klier) Ramacher in Albany. She was raised on the family farm with her three siblings. On May 28, 1935, at the age of 26, Martha married Eugene Schlicht in Albany and together they raised two children. She spent her

-Carrie Dear Carrie, Evangelical Christians recognize two types of giving in the Bible—tithes and offerings. The tithe is off the top, before you do anything else. That’s why I recommend people put it on the top line of their budget forms.

After that, offerings are almost impossible to find in Scripture until you’ve first taken care of your family.

The normative method found is that offerings are to be taken out of your surplus. In my mind, while your family is in debt and you’re busy taking care of your household, there is no surplus.

Just because something tugs at your heartstrings or someone spews out a toxic sermon on giving doesn’t mean that you need to give offerings above your tithe.

But here’s the good news. Once you’ve paid off your debt and have a fully loaded emergency fund in place, you’ll have the rest of your lives to open up and give like never before. Getting out of debt means you will gain control of your most powerful wealth-building tool—your income. And when that happens, you can give with extraordinary levels of generosity.

Paul is a full time musician that performs at festivals throughout the Midwest. He is also a founding member of the popular Irish music group, Ring of Kerry.

Swanville students receive healthy Minnesota Through The Lens: benefits from SHIP grant

By Sharon Pesta Last spring a committee made up of Gene Harthan, Susan Doran, Theresa Bisek, Marvin Poegel and Sharon Pesta applied for and received a Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP) grant for Swanville Public School.

Criteria set forth to obtain grant funds included for the committee to describe plans to implement healthy food options, give active school day strategies and decide on equipment that would best

suit the needs of Swanville students.

The school was awarded $5,400.00 worth of equipment and materials for K-12 students. The committee was extremely pleased to have been considered and to be a recipient of the Statewide Health Improvement Program grant.

Sheila Funk, Community Health Educator from Morrison County Public Health, was instrumental in assisting school personnel in securing this Statewide Health Improvement Program grant.

With Thanksgiving this week, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is warning parents to keep an eye on their children as they visit friends and family who live near a pond or other body of water where only a thin coating of ice may have formed.

Last winter season (November to April), six people died after falling through the ice.

“Kids are adventurous and want to go out and play while mom and dad are cooking or visiting with friends,” said Kara Owens, DNR boating and water safety specialist. “Right now, a thin coating of ice has formed on many lakes and ponds. An inch or two of ice is not safe.”

Children should not go out on the ice without adult supervision, even when conditions improve, she added.

“Parents should also tell their chil-

dren to stay away from any frozen water bodies around the home and that no ice is ever 100 percent safe,” Owens said.

The DNR recommends anyone heading out on the ice should: carry a set of ice picks, check with a local bait shop or resort - ask about ice conditions - and measure the ice.

DNR clear ice thickness recommendations are: • 4 inches for walking.

• 5 inches for a snowmobile or ATV. • 8-12 inches for a car.

• 12-15 inches for a medium-sized truck.

Responding to the needs of local units of government, the Legislature during the last session increased funding for Local Government Aid (LGA) to the tune of well over $100 million. In the past, that money had been allocated based on a complicated formula that favored rural Minnesota, along with the state’s two largest cities, Minneapolis and St. Paul. The logic behind that thinking was that rural areas of the state had lower tax bases and that the two cities had a greater need on a per capita basis. Out-state Minnesota received nearly 69 percent of the total amount of funding, with the twin cities getting around 27 percent.

centages are changing. To my way of thinking, these changes are just another example of rural areas getting less of the overall pie, with the metro getting more. By 2015, the share of LGA going to Greater Minnesota will decrease from 69 percent down to approximately 65. Minneapolis and St. Paul will stay at roughly the same percentage, while suburban areas will jump from 4 percent up to 8 percent. Most of that increase is slated for the older suburbs with aging infrastructure and less open space to grow.

Over the next two years, total LGA funding will increase from $427 million up to $565 million. Those increased dollars will be split nearly equally between Greater Minnesota and the metro area.

In addition, any new money in the future will also be split 50-50 between the two areas. That means, over time, the metro area’s share of LGA will increase relative to Greater Minnesota.

The new formula does away with the designation of “regional centers.”

In the past, those cities with populations of 10,000 or greater received additional funding because it was thought residents who lived outside those cities did at least some of their shopping and other business there and made use of those cities’ infrastructure. The city of Alexandria

had not been listed as one of those cities and was making a push to receive that designation. Now, that’s a moot point.

Under the new formula, 41 cities will be receiving LGA that had not been getting any previously. Of that total, 32 are in the metro area, while nine of those cities lie in Greater Minnesota.

A group that represents cities in outstate Minnesota, the Coalition of Great Minnesota Cities, will be pushing for additional LGA funding in the upcoming legislative session. Even though it’s not a budget year, they feel that if any supplemental money is allocated for tax relief, the first $57 million should go to LGA. My major concern with this plan is that simply increasing LGA funding doesn’t automatically cause a reduction in property taxes. That same argument was used as a reason for the increase in LGA last year, and preliminary numbers show the over-all statewide levy for taxes payable in 2014 to be increasing slightly.

It is not easy to give thanks in painful situations. Nor is it natural to see God’s goodness in all of life’s trials and troubles. But the Apostle Paul reminds us to “Be joyful always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

When we give thanks, we acknowledge our confidence in the Lord, knowing that He cares for us. When we give thanks, we express our closeness to God, realizing that He is with us in every situation. When we give thanks, we declare that we are willing to accept the counsel of God knowing that His will is being done.

Local Municipality Minutes Grey Eagle City November 12, 2013 These are unapproved minutes.

The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Jim Gohman at 7:00 p.m., on the 12th day of November, 2013 in council chambers.

Council members present were Ralph Muellner, Thom Muellner, Dennis Barrett and Andrea Kraska.

There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were Lori Hellmann, Andy Bartkowicz and guests Jim Tschida, Jim Schulzetenberg, Dave Hinman, John Mathews and Deputy John Barber.

A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the minutes of the October 8, 2013 meeting as written. A second was made by Andrea Kraska and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Jim Tschida requested a building permit to remove the wood burner shed on his property and build an enclosed, insulated gazebo for a hot tub. There are no dimensions at this time for the size of the gazebo as Jim is waiting for the contractor to come up with a drawing for the project. The existing shed is four feet from the property line so the gazebo would be moved to meet the setback requirements of five feet from the adjoining property line. No construction will take place until spring. A motion was made by Ralph Muellner to approve the building permit application for Jim Tschida to remove the shed and build an enclosed and insulated gazebo for a hot tub with the stipulation that Jim return to the council with the dimensions once they are known. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Jim Schulzentenberg provided the council with an estimate for a 48 KW enclosed generator on a cement pad for the east lift station. Jim recommended that an automatic transfer switch be put in that would kick in the generator automatically when the power goes out. The generator would not kick in on sudden on/off power interruptions. The generator would run on LP gas and the noise from the generator would be 62 decibels, which would be equivalent

to a car running on high idle. It is recommended that the generator be exercised once a week or every other week for about twenty minutes. The cost would be$18,440 and does not include the cost of installation or sales tax. The reason for quoting a 48 KW as opposed to a 36 KW is so that the water plant pumps and the lift station pumps could work at the same time without any issues. Jim will make arrangements with Andy to make an onsite visit to determine exact needs and come up with a more complete cost estimate.

Dave Hinman and John Mathews were in attendance to discuss property owned by Margaret Hinman. The family would like to parcel off a section that the house sits on so that the house may be sold and would create a new legal description for that parcel. There would be one block that would include all the property within city limits with three separate lots. The council was provided a copy of the power of attorney allowing the family members to act on behalf of Margaret. The storm sewer and sanitary sewer lines are on the north side of the road with the water main on the south side of the road. The storm sewer runs to the end of city limits going east. A preliminary plat will be provided as soon as possible and forwarded to the city attorney with possible attorney opinion ready for the December council meeting.

The following water/wastewater/maintenance items were discussed: 1. Tim Hagemeier from Minnesota Rural Water came to televise several sections of sewer line. It was determined that there are some roots in a couple of sections and a lot of grease and fats in the line going west on State Street. Andy has contacted a company that will come in to chop out those sections of sewer line that have the tree roots. Residents are reminded to not allow grease/fats to go down the sewer lines.

2. Andy did some milling along the sidewalk by the funeral home, but was only able to go half to three quarter inches deep. The council was instructed to take a look at this section for discussion at the December meeting.

3. The pump that runs the snow plow is still leaking. The existing pump cannot be repaired because the plate is different and to replace the pump would cost approximately $3,500. Andy will check into the price of a new plow as a comparison

to replacing the pump to see what would be the least expensive way to go.

4. The check valve at the water plant wasn’t working, but has been repaired and everything appears to be working as it should.

There were no yard clean ups for council consideration.

The clerk informed the council that the November 2014 council meeting date needed to be changed due to falling on Veteran’s Day. A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to change the November 2014 council meeting date to November 12, 2014. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the fire department resignation of Dan Gunion effective immediately. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the liquor license for the Double R. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Andrea Kraska to approve submitting a bill to the Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club for $3,500 for park maintenance. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The council discussed a request from the Community Builders to run the Empty Stocking Program through the city. The Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions club sponsors the program and the city can accept the funds on behalf of the Community Builders for this program. A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to approve running the Empty Stocking Program through the city, with the city submitting a government request form to the Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club for their donation. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The Mayor updated the council on the following items: 1. Bills have been submitted from Flood Stucco for work done on the exterior of old city hall, for partial work completed on the inside entry of old city hall and for partial work completed on the back portion of the library.

2. The Mayor along with Heidi Peper met with the Senate bonding committee for possible funding for the RV Park in St. Cloud. After that meeting, a park board member along with Heidi Peper, House Representative Ron Kresha and State Senator Paul Gazelka to ask for their support in sponsoring a bonding bill as well as support for the Outdoor Recreation Grant.

A motion was made by Andrea Kraska to approve the various fund transfers as follows: $768.36 from the Fire Fund to the Fire Hall Debt Service Fund and $79.57 from the General Fund of which $22.57 goes to the Water Fund and $57 goes to the Sewer Fund for Fire Hall and Library utilities. A second was made

by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to approve the payment of bills as listed and to include pay-

ment of the following: $1,660.05 to Minnesota Power and $442.87 to Eagle Auto Repair. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Department Reports: Maintenance Report, Frank Koopmeiners: Water usage is down for the month while Sewage usage has increased.

• The speed limit signs on Oak and Hillcrest are now in.

• The snow plow is ready to go for the season.

• Frank will get a second bid on the lawn mower.

• There are plans to replace the tree at the corner of City Park. It is estimated to cost around $400.

• Thein Wells recommends pulling #4 well as it needs to be evaluating every 7-8 years. It is estimated to cost between $2000-2500 to replace.

Fire Department Report, Lange: The Fire Department received $1,600 from the Fire Training Board for training.

• The State of Minnesota is upgrading their radio system. It will cost $35 for the radio plus a $200 fee to create a plug.

• The Fire Department is applying for FEMA grant for a water truck with features including a 3,500 gallon tank, poly tank, hydraulic lift, and swivel shoot capabilities.

Planning Commission, Lange: Variance for Linda Tarbuck residence was approved.

UCDC, Olson: No minutes to report.

Recreation Board, Johnson: No minutes to report.

Unfinished Business: Council Member Brian Lange is current on his Board of Appeals and Equalization Training. Verification was signed. Rollie and Dennis will at-

tend training this coming year.

Clean-up at the Virnig property is continuing and non-profit organizations have reached out to help.

New Business: The Amerigas Pre-Buy Agreement was reviewed and discussed. Motion made by City Council member Rollie Johnson and seconded by Robert Maciej to purchase 2,750 gallons of propane at $.159/gallon. The propane will be used to heat the Water Treatment Facility, Community Center, and Recreation Building. Motion was carried unanimously.

Interim City Clerk/Treasurer Reva Mische contacted MNDot about repainting the crosswalks covered up by the Highway 238 resurfacing project. Reva will follow up with the state highway and will indicate locations of the proposed new crosswalks.

2014 Budget Priorities were discussed. These priorities include: housing on the south side of town, a new maintenance shed, a new city hall, and clean-up of Nature Trail.

Financial Report: Motion made

by City Council Member Robert Maciej and seconded by City Council Member Brian Lange to approve the bills in the amount of $34,855.23 as presented by Interim Treasurer Reva Mische. Motion carried unanimously.

Interim City Clerk/Treasurer presented the Treasurers Report balancing at $85,154.92.

Grace Undeserved -By Sheila Ripplinger We love to tell the bible story of Jonah and the big fish- mostly in a cute child-like style. The pictures in the children’s books depict a slightly different kind of message than the biblical account of God’s amazing Grace on a people that did not deserve it.

Jonah was commissioned by the Lord to go tell the City of Nineveh that they would be overthrown in forty days because of their wickedness and detestable idol worship. This was a large and important city with more than 120,000 people who lived there.

Jonah did not want to do this mission trip that the Lord had planned for him. He boarded a ship and fled from the Lord. He was afraid to face this great city and tell them that they would be destroyed by the hand of the Lord. Who could blame him for not wanting to go and speak this message of truth to them?

The story goes on that as Jonah was running from the Lord, feeling safe below the deck of the ship in a deep sleep, a violent storm came. Fear struck all who were on the ship and even though Jonah was the only one who worshiped the one True God, the others knew that they were experiencing the anger of Jonah’s God! The only answer to calm the anger of his God was to throw him out of the ship! The Lord provided a large fish to swallow him up and give Jonah time to rethink the orders that had been given to him.

Jonah had three days and three nights in the belly of this large fish. He finally cried out to the Lord in his distress and prayed a beautiful and sincere prayer.

Then the Lord commanded the fish to vomit, and Jonah was safe on dry ground.

The Lord gave Jonah a second chance to go to Nineveh and proclaim the gloomy message to the city. He obeyed the Lord, but went reluctantly to preach this news to the wicked city.

The Ninevites believed God’s words through Jonah and fasted and repented.

They cried out to God and gave up their

evil ways in hopes that He would relent from His fierce anger and spare them. God saw how they had turned from their evil ways and He had compassion on them and did not bring on them the destruction that He had threatened.

This is God’s undeserved Grace. We do not deserve His Grace any more than the wicked city of Nineveh. We live in our evil ways and cling to worthless idols that we put before God just as they did.

God’s professing people today, like Jonah, do not want to speak out against the wickedness of our day any more than he did in his time period. The Lord said to Jonah, “These people do not know their right hand from their left, should I not be concerned about this city?” What is our response to the Lord when He asks us to speak up? Is it easier to ‘keep the peace’ and stay silent?

Jonah’s story is a message of undeserved Grace. God has given us another story of His amazing Grace by sending His Son Jesus to a world that is lost in wickedness of all sorts. Part of Jonah’s prayer while in the belly of the fish was that ‘Most forfeit the grace that could be theirs.’

Nineveh was given forty days to repent. We do not know how much time we have left to make things right with God. The Lord sent Jonah to Nineveh, and He sent Jesus to us. The coming destruction for this world is approaching- the warnings are all around us. It is undeniable and certain. Jesus will come one day with His angels to take with Him all who have turned away from the wickedness of the world and accepted His Grace.

All who are left here in this world will have to face to terrible consequences of their refusal to turn to the Lord and accept the Truth and Grace that He offered so freely. It will then be too late for Grace.

What if you had forty days to make up your mind? What if you only had today?

Not one of us deserve God’s Grace. But He is compassionate and forgiving and slow to become angry, and He is still of-

Training, determination, and the right equipment helped a conservation officer with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources save the life of a man who fell through the ice on a central Minnesota lake.

Acting Lt. Tony Musatov of Sauk Rapids responded to Little Rock Lake near Rice, Minn., on Friday, Nov. 15, after a report of an ice angler breaking through the ice.

On arrival, Musatov asked two volunteer firefighters to assist him in pushing a small boat out across the ice. The ice was too thick near shore to break through so the group pushed the boat across the ice until they were able to break through.

Musatov broke through the ice as well but was able to make his way into the boat and continue to the victim.

Progress was very slow due to ice.

When the rescuers were about 35 yards away, the angler, Joshua Johnson, 30, of Sartell, went under water and never resurfaced.

Musatov and the others continued to break ice until they reached the area where Johnson was last seen. Musatov threw a grappling hook and eventually hooked the leg of the victim. CPR was started and Johnson was rushed to the hospital.

Even though Johnson was under water for about 45 minutes, doctors were able to warm his body and get a heartbeat. Johnson was in a coma until early Monday morning, but is now able to communicate with doctors.

Also assisting were DNR conservation officers Mike Martin and Dave Schottenbauer.

District 9B continues to a hotbed of activity. Pierz and Upsala both had stellar football seasons, but ended just short of the State Prep Bowl. Congratulations to both teams!

Of course the passing of Fall sports means, basketball, hockey, wrestling, school plays and Christmas programs are just around the corner. Be sure to make time to stop by your community schools and to participate in community activities - they are the backbone of our rural quality of life.

I wanted to wish a big thank you to Mary of Lourdes School, Little Falls Schools and Pierz Schools for the invitation to participate in their respective Veterans Day programs. I was especially honored to speak at Mary of Lourdes and to share the story of my grandfather, who was a WWII Veteran in Europe.

On November 13th, I participated in a rural broadband town hall meeting sponsored by Sen. Matt Schmit. These listening sessions are critical to furthering our conversation on working to improve broadband speeds in Morrison and Todd County.

According to Connect Minnesota, “[c] urrently, 74.5% of Minnesota households can access fixed and mobile broadband at speeds of at least 10 Mbps download/6 Mbps upload - the minimum speed threshold for

Minnesota’s goal of ubiquitous broadband availability.”

Unfortunately, the 25.5% who do not meet broadband standards are largely in rural Minnesota.

While our Metro legislators continue to push for light rail expansion and a $92 million dollar new Senate building, our rural families in Morrison and Todd County are struggling to get high-speed access that is critical for education and economic growth.

Rural broadband is essential for our area, and I will continue to fight to make it a priority.

On Wednesday night, I was in Long Praire town hall meeting about Veteran benefits with Todd County Veterans Services Coordinator Paul Berscheit and Legion commander Gary Peterson.

If you know of a Veteran who is having trouble receiving their benefits, please let me know so I can find the right person to help.

Finally, I want to pass along blessings for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.

In addition to being professional performing musicians, Erdahl teaches at Gustavus Adolphus College and Vecchione teaches at the MacPhail Center for Music. They present a wonderful parade of music intended to show an audience that music is for everyone.

The Stolen Turkey

Ducking into confession with a turkey in his arms, Dewey said, “Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned. I stole this turkey to feed my family. Would you take it and settle my guilt?”

“Certainly not,” said the Priest. “As penance, you must return it to the one from whom you stole it.”

“I tried,” Dewey sobbed, “but he refused. Oh, Father, what should I do?”

“If what you say is true, then it is all right for you to keep it for your family.”

Thanking the Priest, Dewey hurried off.

When confession was over, the Priest returned to his residence. When he walked into the kitchen, he found that someone had stolen his turkey.
