Do you talk to yourself? -By Harvey Mackay In the classic golf comedy movie “Caddyshack,” Bill Murray plays Carl Spackler, the greenskeeper for the Bushwood Country Club. Carl talks to himself a lot as he tries to rid the club of an elusive gopher who is tearing up the greens.

But the best example of Carl talking to himself is when he's pretending to tee off in a golf match at the famous Master’s Tournament. He announces to himself in his “Cinderella story” that this “unknown comes out of the pack to lead on the final hole.” He’s a mere 455 yards away from victory and takes a two-iron while swinging and destroying a flower. Then he switches to a five-iron and swings while destroying another flower.

Finally, he whispers he’s 195 yards away and swings an eight-iron, destroying a third flower, but says triumphantly, “It’s in the hole.”

I wish winning the Master’s or any golf tournament were that easy, but I believe your odds for improving or succeeding will go up if you talk to yourself.

As part of my corporate speeches, I always ask the people in the audience – how many of them talk to themselves? Invariably the answer is about 50 percent. Then I say, to the other 50 percent, I can just hear you saying to yourself, “Who me? I don’t talk to myself.”

But I want you to talk to yourself. I want you to coach yourself. I want you to ask yourself how you’re doing. I want you to elevate yourself. The 10 most powerful two letter words in the English language. If it is to be, it is up to me. You must ignite your own passion. Make a commitment to yourself.

I also believe that talking to yourself is a sign of intelligence. Many of the world’s smartest people talk to themselves. Albert Einstein talked to himself. He was hardly a social butterfly when he was growing up, preferring to keep to himself. Einstein.org reports that he “used to repeat his sentences to himself softly.”

In fact, most researchers believe self-talk may help your brain perform better. A study published in “Acta Psychologica” showed participants completed item-finding tasks faster when talking themselves through it, suggesting an improvement in visual processing.

Another study published in “Psychology of Sport and Exercise” had 72 tennis players play five rounds, including three training sessions. Players were separated into two groups, with one being asked to practice selftalk. This group demonstrated increased selfconfidence and reduced anxiety, while also improving their games.

“Psych Central” identifies four types of self-talk that will make you smart and feel better about yourself – complimentary, motivational, goal-setting and other dialogue.

We’ve all had days when we need to remind ourselves that we are capable of the task at hand and walk through the steps to accomplish the desired goal.

I talk to myself because it helps me concentrate and focus, and also improve my memory. I’ve always repeated things to myself several times to help me remember details, names, phone numbers and so on. I even read out loud sometimes because I find that I retain information better. I’ve always considered writing things down to be like talking to yourself.

An article about talking to yourself published in the “Washington Post” in January said that the pandemic has caused more people than ever to talk to themselves absent social

gatherings, especially those living alone.

The article cited Charles Fernyhough, a psychology professor at Durham University whose research shows people talk out loud more when under stress. But he said it is far from crazy.

Sometimes talking to yourself can even save your life. Remember the movie “Castaway” starring Tom Hanks. He plays a FedEx troubleshooter stranded on an uninhabited island after his plane crashes in the South Pacific, and the film depicts his desperate attempts to survive and return home.

FedEx packages wash up on shore include a Wilson Sporting Goods volleyball, which he appropriately calls Wilson. He talks to the volleyball during his four stranded years to keep sane.

If you talk to yourself in public, there will always be people who think you are strange.

So here’s a great solution. One of my favorite cartoons shows a guy walking down the street with a phone to his ear. The caption reads, “Wonderful! This way I can go block after block talking to myself and nobody looks at me as if I am crazy.”

cultivating-type machine, plus some hand tools. The restrictions caused by the primitive machinery limited the ability to cultivate more than a couple of acres. The farm land and garden, plus the wild berries, nuts and plants fed the family and the animals.

The original homesteaders had a roof over their heads, a warm fire and food, so many of them were satisfied. One needs to consider that there may have been some form of taxation on the property, but other than that, there was no bills for electricity, gas, phone, cable TV or the rest of our regular monthly bills. Some of the goals and relaxed life style was carried on into future generations living at the same location.

Along came WWII and the horses began to be replaced by tractors. The prices for farm produce increased and some of the farmers wanted to expand land ownership to create additional income to support larger machinery and more farm animals. More bills, more land, more animals, more conveniences. More control from sources away from the farm.

Suddenly we're working for someone else.

That same homestead today is gone. It, along with the 160 acres it contained, is now part of a big field with no-one living on it. I guess that is considered progress.

When the Europeans began to immigrate to the US, they frequently tried to locate in an area that looked similar to the countries from which they came.

That's why many of our ancestors came from northern Europe. I guess they liked the climate and the trees. I wonder why the new arrivals didn't choose to till the grassy prairies instead of heavily wooded areas which needed to have all of those stumps removed. Maybe they were more comfortable with log houses and firewood, instead of sod houses and buffalo chips.

Some of the new residents in Minnesota were from areas near the East Coast. They were looking for land they could afford and a place where they could create their lives based upon their own personal desires.

The Homestead act of 1862 created a great increase in Minnesota's population. The rules said that the persons applying for a homestead needed to be at least 21 years of age, a US citizen or had begun paperwork to become a citizen and had not born arms against the US or aided someone that had done so. Homesteads were 160 acres, cost $1.25 per acre or less and the applicant would receive actual title to the land after residing there for 5 years.

Just a thought, a square mile of land could easily be a residence for 4 families. There were some homesteads with a single male owner, but in many cases, there were families and chances were good that they were larger families than we see today. So it is quite possible for a section of land to contain from 10 to 20 residents.

The residents were frequently poor, having a team of horses, a cow, maybe a couple of pigs and some chickens. Their machinery consisted of a walking plow, a four wheeled wagon, a

Scripture teaches that we ought to have an “attitude of gratitude”. So, on Thanksgiving Day, what I would like to talk to you about is having a heart transplant. If you were honest, I believe most people would say that (in their heart) they are grumblers. Now, if you are honest with yourself, that ought to concern you. It does me! So, this article is for me today as well as all those who take the time to read.

Last week I mentioned that we ought to go to God with our concerned with Thanksgiving, and then instead of thinking of the negatives in your life, think about all that is excellent and praiseworthy. I would imagine that if we started to look at the glass half full instead of half empty, that our hearts would be filled with peace and joy instead of in wanting more. So, last weeks text was Philippians 4:68 and this week we are looking at Philippians 4:12-13 “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether

Joyce A. Eveslage

Joyce A. Eveslage, age 74 of Freeport died peacefully on Monday, November 22, 2021, at the CentraCare Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, November 27 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Aaron Nett officiating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church in Freeport. The Freeport Fire Department and the Christian Women will pray at 7 p.m. Friday evening.

Joyce Ann Duclos was born February 11, 1947, in Little Falls, Minnesota. Her parents were Henry and Madeline (Luethmers) Duclos. She was united in marriage to John Eveslage on October 7, 1967, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport.

Joyce worked as an LPN for Dr. Kuhlman in Melrose for a short time before working at Kraft Foods in Melrose in the lab. During this time, she was also part owner and operator of Freeport Trucking where she helped manage the day-to-day operations for many years. Joyce volunteered her time at Coborn Cancer Center in St. Cloud. She enjoyed camping, gardening, taking care of her many animals and pets, and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport and the Christian Women.

Survivors include her husband, John Eveslage of Freeport; children, Kirk (Donna) Eveslage of Carlos, Sam Eveslage of Freeport, Scott Eveslage of Freeport, Mike (Sherry) Eveslage of Freeport, and Steve (Sarah) Eveslage of Freeport; grandchildren, Tucker, Broderick, Grant, Josie, Jack, Elijah, Kate, Henry, Jake (Morgan), HollieAnn, and Nate; sisters and brothers, Judy Duclos of St. Cloud, Jeff (Deb) Duclos of Melrose, June (Dave) Domine of St. Joseph, Joel (Twyla) Duclos of North Carolina, Lorene Koopmeiners of St. Cloud, and Dolores (Alcuin) Notch of Freeport; and brother-in-law, Arnold Stueve of Freeport.

Dorene Margaret Bueckers was born on July 3, 1941 in Melrose, Minnesota to Clem and Loretta (Rakotz) Bueckers. She was united in marriage to Erwin Feldewerd on September 12, 1961 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Dorene worked on a turkey farm near New Munich for 40 years, but mostly spent her time raising her family. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich and the Christian Women. Dorene enjoyed flower gardening, working word find puzzles, baking bread and cookies. She loved spending time with her family and especially loved spoiling her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Erwin Feldewerd of Meire Grove; children, Jim (Deb) Feldewerd of Melrose, Steve Feldewerd of Sauk Rapids, Dan (Janet) Feldewerd of Grey Eagle, Gary (Ashley) Feldewerd of New Munich, Lisa (Darrel) Maus of Freeport, and Leon (Sue) Feldewerd of Melrose; 24 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Arlene Feldewerd of Avon; brothers and sisters, Ervin Bueckers (friend, Shirley) of Melrose, Lorene (Aloys) Feldewerd of Melrose, Alvin (Sally) Bueckers of Albany, Ron (Sheila) Bueckers of Oklahoma, Tony (JoAnn) Bueckers of Texas, Dan (Geri) Bueckers of Melrose, and Clem Bueckers, Jr. of Melrose; and sisters-in-law, Donna Bueckers of St. Rosa and Charla Bueckers of Melrose.

Beatrice Catherine Greener was born July 22, 1930 in Albany, Minnesota to Michael and Eva (Loehlein) Greener. She was united in marriage to Gilbert “Gib” Douvier on June 2, 1949 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Beaty worked at the Jennie-O for over 30 years until her retirement.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Beaty enjoyed sewing, puzzles, gardening, taking an occasional trip to the casino, and loved playing cards, especially Smear.

Survivors include her children, Perry (Mary Ann) Douvier of Holdingford, Kathy (Donny) Dobmeier of St. Rosa, Sandy (Sam) Klaphake of Belgrade, Gail (Randy) Eich of St. Joseph, Randy (Terry) Douvier of Brooten, Debbie (John) Fischbach of Becker, and Jeff Douvier of Melrose; 30 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; and sisters-in-law, Regina, Evelyn, and Audrey.

Thomas H. “Tom” Kluempke, age 77 of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 19, 2021, at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 24 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Deacon Ernie Kociemba assisting. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard. The Funeral Mass will be live streamed and will be accessible on the St. Mary's Website.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

Thomas “Tom” Kluempke was born on July 18, 1944, to Joseph “Joe” and Mary (Gieske) Kluempke in Melrose, Minnesota. He was a 1962 graduate of Melrose High School. After graduation, Tom enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1963 where he served two years in Germany in radio communications. After being honorably discharged in 1965, he started working at Kraft-West in Melrose until the fire in January of 1989. He then worked at Stone Container, Inc. in St. Cloud, retiring in 2010.

Tom married Judith “Judy” Hollermann at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose on June 19, 1976. Tom and Judy lived south of Melrose on County Road 13 where they raised their three children. Attending their children’s school, sporting and special events were very important to him. Tom and Judy traveled to many states, national parks, historic and scenic sites, many times with their children as they were growing up. Their travels continued later with traveling companions, Ken and Gloria, on many road trips and motorcoach trips across the United States and Canadian Rockies.

Tom was an avid deer hunter. Lost Creek Deer Camp was his home during the November deer hunting season with his brothers for over 50 years.

Tom was a lifetime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and a member of the Melrose American Legion Post 101. He also bowled on a number of leagues over the years. Tom’s summers were spent taking care of the yard and helping Judy with their many flower gardens. He enjoyed playing cards with his wife and Smear with his brothers, board games, and Carbles. After retirement, he spent many hours watching reruns of westerns, also nature and history programs. Spending time with his grandchildren was one of his greatest pleasures.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Judy Kluempke of Melrose; sons, Brian (Beth) Kluempke of Melrose and Kevin (Jamie) Kluempke of Melrose; daughter, Nicole (Derek) Boomer of Bloomington; granddaughter, Adalynn Kluempke; grandson, Ethan Kluempke; mother-in-law, Marcella Hollermann of Melrose; siblings, Dave Kluempke of Melrose, Nona (Larry) Knoblach of Plymouth, Dick (Rosemary) Kluempke of Tigard, Oregon, Pat (Tracy Lovness) Kluempke of Stillwater, and George (Eva) Kluempke of Cold Spring; in-laws, Carol Kluempke of Portland, Oregon, Cathy Kluempke of Grey Eagle, Rosie (Dan) Middendorf of Verndale, Donna (Eric) Lindberg of Miltona, Thomas (Patricia) Hollermann of Alexandria, and Patrick (Deanne) Hollermann of St. Cloud; and many nieces and nephews.

Thomas Anthony Nienaber was born on February 16, 1944 in Albany Township, MN to the late Theodor and Marie (Borgerding) Nienaber. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1965 and was honorably discharged in 1967.

Thomas was united in marriage to Rosemary Heinen on April 27, 1968 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony, MN. In 1973, Thomas and Rosemary moved to Burtrum where he continued his carpentry and then began farming. He was a faithful member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville. Thomas had many hobbies such as fishing, hunting, bird and deer watching, along with his ultimate passion of snowmobiling with his family and friends. He also enjoyed playing the concertina and singing Christmas carols with his family. Thomas loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren more than anything.

Are there any traps to avoid, and do you have other advice on ways we can cut costs during the holiday season?

-René Dear René, If you’re getting out of debt, the phrase “extra money” probably isn’t even in your vocabulary.

Regardless, stores will do everything they can to convince you to toss a couple of extra items into your cart when Christmas rolls around. Their festive marketing is everywhere, and most of it tries to get you to spend extra on things you don’t need or can’t afford.

It might be Christmas, but that doesn’t mean you need to buy a bunch of high-end electronic gadgets for everyone. Any way you slice it, electronics add up to be way more than most people want to spend. Try focusing on more personal—and less expensive—gifts that will be truly meaningful to the ones receiving them.

Set a reasonable budget, determine what’s fair for each person and stick to it. Be sure you’re following realistic gift guidelines before you go out shopping. If you have kids, don’t let their Christmas lists dictate how much you spend. Your budget should do that. Look out for sneaky buys that drain your wallet, too. Some

Whether you’re shopping online or out and about, remember that extended warranties are not a good deal. Neither are store credit cards and the accompanying “discounts.” It seems everyone from big-box retail stores to mom and pop operations have their own store credit card these days. Sure, they’ll be happy to offer you 10 to 20 percent off a $7 purchase of socks if you’ll just open an account. But there’s a good chance you’ll still be paying off this year’s Christmas next December.

If gift wrapping at the store is complementary, go for it. If not, just do it yourself. Sure, it takes a little time and effort, but you’ll save a ton of money buying a few rolls of wrapping paper at the local dollar store.

Don’t wait until December 20th to order your Christmas presents, either. Plan ahead — like right now — so you don’t have to worry about expensive overnight shipping rates.

Finally, I know many folks want to send Christmas cards to everyone they know every year. Some people go completely over-thetop, with their family (including the dog and cat) dressed to the nines and a photo taken by a professional photographer. Come on! You can cut costs by sending cards to just your closest friends and family. It’s okay to be a little selective here, and the cards don’t have to be expensive.

Dear Motor Medics, Guys I’ve listened to the show for years and I feel I’m well versed in the basics of auto repair so when I was told I had killed my car because of something I had done dozens of times in the past on other vehicles I was concerned. I purchased a used 2010 Toyota Prius Hybrid for the fuel savings and the technology.

After a few weeks of driving the battery failed in my driveway and I could not get it started. I figured I would just give it a quick charge then drive to the store to pick up a new battery and that’s where it all went bad. I connected my charger for a few hours and then tried to start it, but it would still not run. I then installed a new battery and the car powered on but would not move. I had it towed to the dealer and they inspected it then called me to say that charging the car caused a failure in two of the vehicle computers. They did not tell me why, but I had no choice, so I just fixed it. How can this be?

-Chris in Berkley, California Dear Chris, Chargers can put out 20 volts or more without a load so when connected to a totally dead battery that voltage can destroy the computers. Always verify the proper charging procedure before charging your car to avoid this kind of damage.

My tires are about two years old and have 20k miles on them and appear to be in good shape with no excessive wear. My mechanic said the front-end components all look very good and that my tires are properly balanced. Do you have any thoughts?

-Juanita in Sioux Falls, South Dakota Dear Juanita, It sounds like you may not have a tire balance issue but rather a tire belt issue. You can balance a square tire, really you can, but it will only be smooth on the tire machine. What I’m saying is even if the weight of the tire is balanced out the tread can be irregularly shaped causing a hop or side to side movement when in contact with the road. With the vehicle on the shops hoist ask them to observe the tread of the tire and see if it stays steady as the tire rotates. If it has a lot of movement up and down or side to side, you may have a broken belt which is causing the shaking you are experiencing.

Swanville Junior High Student of the Month

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the October grades 7-9 Student of the Month, ninth grade student Emma Kurowski. Emma is the daughter of Frank and Michelle Kurowski. She enjoys playing and watching sports, hanging out with friends and playing with her dog.

She plans to go to college to become a physical therapist. Emma’s favorite thing about school is seeing her friends and participating in after school activities. Her advice to other students is “To work hard, get your assignments done on time and to have fun!” Outside of school she tries her best

By Sherry Kutter, Grey Eagle Dear Neighbors, Happy Thanksgiving! I am reminded of all I am grateful for. Family, friends, my community, a good roof over our heads, food on the table, our Veterans, divine presence and more.

Yes. We are being told by some to be fearful and distrustful. But this Thanksgiving may we be reminded of what we have in common.

We are all in this together.

I am grateful for clean water, clean air, healthy food, good rural healthcare, dedicated and responsible school teachers and staff, local police, libraries and more. Many others lack these necessities.

Yes, we also have a few common enemies like the Covid virus and serious changes in our weather and climate patterns. Our State and National Democratic leaders have good policies to enhance the things we like and limit the effects of those things that harm us.

Sadly our Republican leaders like Michelle Fischbach would not even vote for Biden’s incredibly popular infrastructure bill that will strongly benefit us in rural Minnesota. But the bill passed! We will get broadband!

Our rough roads and unsafe bridges will be fixed! We will get improvements to provide clean, safe drinking water in our communities!

Charging stations for electric vehicles! All of these will provide good jobs. All for us. Here in rural Minnesota.

I am sincerely grateful for our Democratic leaders who make these good things happen for us in rural Minnesota. Republicans had the chance but they were too busy taking care of big corporations and billionaires.

Fire: November 19, 2021: At approximately 8:47 a.m., received a report of a skid-steer loader on fire. The skid loader was parked inside an outbuilding at the address of 25128 350th Street in Albany Township.

The first responding units with the assistance of the landowner, Ross Klaphake, 34, of Albany, pulled the skid loader out of the outbuilding with another tractor. The damage to the outbuilding was minimal with some charring to the underside of the roof. The skid loader sustained heavy fire damage.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Albany Fire Department, Albany Police Department, and Melrose Ambulance.

Crash: November 22, 2021: At approximately 6:26 p.m., received a call from a passerby reporting that there was a single vehicle rollover near the intersection of Upper Valley Road and 260th Avenue in Millwood Township. The passerby stated that the driver of the vehicle appeared to have serious injuries.

Upon arrival Stearns County Deputies found a 2003 Dodge Dakota that had been driven

by Jose Guadalupe Munoz-Munguia, 26, of Melrose. It is believed that the truck had been traveling westbound on Upper Valley Road when the driver swerved to avoid hitting a deer, failed to negotiate a curve in the road, entered the ditch, and rolled several times.

Munoz-Munguia was transported to the Melrose Hospital for further medical evaluation.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and was assisted by Freeport Fire and Rescue and Melrose Ambulance.

Sauk Centre History Personal Needs Drive for Veterans Museum to Hold The Upsala American Legion Auxiliary Unit #350 is hosting a Show Your Thanks Open House

The Sauk Centre History Museum and Research Center will be hosting an Open House on Saturday, December 4 from 1:00 - 3:00. The theme is “Sinclair Lewis: Home for the Holidays.
