Giving thanks for your customers -By Harvey Mackay

Today’s mail included the first holiday greeting of the season -- for Thanksgiving. One of our vendors sends us an eye-catching Thanksgiving card every year, thanking us for our business.

This is an approach I started my first year in business.

What I love about this custom is that our greeting never gets lost in the shuffle.

We get relatively few cards in November. They are memorable.

Beyond that, the sentiment is really important. As a customer, I think: “They want us to know they are thankful that we are their customers. They want to keep our business. They’ve offered to go the extra mile. They think we’re important!”

Have you thanked your customers lately? I mean, besides when you get the order? Do they know how much they mean to you?

Customer appreciation is not a wise area in which to economize. Your sales force and customer service staff need support that starts at the top. The boss should set the tone for customer appreciation because without customers, the boss doesn’t have any reason to come to work.

Customers who feel appreciated are more likely to be loyal to their vendors.

Price is rarely the most important consideration when making a buying decision.

In fact, service and quality consistently rank above price in purchasing choices.

Customers understand that they get what they pay for. They deserve to believe that

they are your most important customer!

So customer appreciation means every day is Thanksgiving Day. Never pass up an opportunity to let your customers know what their business means to you.

It isn’t necessary to go to extremes.

In addition to the memorable Thanksgiving card that we received, let me share some great ideas that folks have shared with me: • Treats! Send -- or drop off -- a great fruit basket, cookies or a sandwich tray. Can you add a little fun? One sales rep perks things up during the hot summer months with root beer float parties.

She arranges a date with the manager, and then shows up with root beer (regular and diet), ice cream, cups, straws and long spoons. Double bonus: it is not only a great reminder of her gratitude for the business, but it gives the office staff a morale booster too.

• Drawings. Once a week, once a month, or once a year, offer a prize that can be used at your customer’s business.

Could be some of your products, a plant, a restaurant certificate, a television -use your imagination. Make a big deal when you present it. A giant “thank you for your business” note with your name prominently featured should be attached.

• Extra attention. Make sure you are aware of delivery dates and follow up promptly with the customer. Was the order complete and on time? Any other service that they need? Finally, “thanks again, it was a pleasure doing business with you. And I’ll check back with you in a few weeks/months/specified time.”

• Celebrate the customer’s big days.

Keep track of corporate anniversaries, product launches, promotions, office moves and awards. Make sure your handwritten card gets mailed or delivered ASAP. Wish them well and don’t

pass up the opportunity to say thanks again for their very valuable business.

• And above all, deliver more than you promise, every single day. While most customers are satisfied just getting their orders correct, they are delighted when the product, service, quality and value exceed their expectations. Nothing says I value your business like going the extra mile.

What happens when you don’t follow these rules? Consider the story of the butcher who laid an egg. A man ran into the butcher shop just before closing on the day before Thanksgiving.

“You’ve got to help me,” he said. “I told my wife I’d bring home a turkey for tomorrow’s dinner, and I forgot! Do you have any turkeys left?”

“Well, I’ll see,” the butcher said, and he went into the cooler. He found only one thin, scrawny turkey, which he brought for the customer to look over.

The man shook his head. “Haven’t you got anything else?”

Hiding his irritation, the butcher headed back to the cooler, taking the turkey with him. There were no others, so after a few minutes he brought the same turkey out again. “Took me a while, but I found this one.”

The customer sighed. “All right. I’ll take ‘em both.”

Mackay’s Moral: If you want your customers to give thanks for you, make every day Thanksgiving for them.

Grey Eagle Snowmobile Safety Course A new DNR snowmobile safety class will be sponsored by the Grey Eagle/Burtrum Lions. The class will be a one day program with a home study CD course.

The class will be December 3, 2011 at the Grey Eagle Library Meeting Room. A review and a written test will be given. The class will begin at 9 a.m.

Students passing the written test, will be required to take a driving test at 2 p.m. the same day. The materials must be picked up at the library by Nov. 30, 2011. The CD study course takes several hours, so pick up the materials as soon as possible. Class size is limited.

Obituaries Ervin Silvers

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Ervin Silvers, age 88, of Albany, was held Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Burial followed in the parish cemetery.

Ervin died Friday at North Memorial Medical Center

and Chairman of the Farm Credit Services.

Ervin was also active in his church, first at St. Catherine’s in Farming where he was on the parish council, sang in the church choir and the men’s choir; then at Seven Dolors where he was on the parish council, the building and repair committee and sang in the church choir and the funeral choir. He was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Aid Society where he served as President and Secretary and he was active in the Knights of Columbus where he was Financial Secretary, Recording Secretary, Deputy Grand Knight and Grand Knight.

Ervin is survived by his wife, Rita Silvers, Albany; his children; Teri Meade, Beulah, WY; Ken (Arlene) Silvers, Sauk Rapids; Gil (Diane) Silvers, Sartell; Linda Schlangen, Cold Spring; John (Carol) Silvers, St. Joseph; Ann (Lynn) McClintock, St. Cloud; Joan (Rich) Ritter, Sartell; Dennis (Gerise) Silvers, Lonsdale; Donny Silvers, Albany; Gary (Lora) Silvers, Avon; Cindy (Bruce) Berghorst, St. Joseph; his sisters, Sr. Lillian Silvers, OSF; Rosie Rea, Farming; Helen (Bernie) Maurer, Little Falls; brother, Bill Silvers, St. Cloud; 29 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.

Ervin is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Andy Silvers, Ted Silvers, Robert Silvers, Ray Silvers, sister, Hilde Lauer, sonsin-law, John Meade and Tom Klein.

Ervin was born December 18, 1922 in Farming to William and Helen (Geisen) Silvers. He married Rita Dingman on October 22, 1946 in Farming. The couple farmed near Farming and then retired in Albany. During his career as a farmer, Ervin was president of the Farming Milk Marketing Cooperative and the Albany Area Farmers Union; Secretary of the Stearns County American Dairy Board; Chairman of the Resolutions & Redistricting; Farmer’s Union; Milk Marketing; Secretary of the Minnesota Dairy Promotion Board; Director of the National Dairy Board; Chairman of the National Dairy Research Foundation; Director of the Federal Land Bank

Frances C. Schneider, age 81, of Meire Grove, died peacefully on Saturday, November 19, 2011 surrounded by her family at Fairway Pines in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial were held Tuesday, November 22 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Omar Guanchez officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery at a later date.

Frances Catherine Wolbeck was born November 18, 1930 in Spring Hill Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Bernard and Mary (Hiltner) Wolbeck. On July 26, 1955 she married Joseph Schneider in Spring Hill, Minnesota. Frances was a homemaker all her life. She cleaned at the St. John’s School in Meire Grove for many years. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, and crocheting afghans, pillow cases, and doilies. She especially enjoyed

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church in Freeport. Parish prayers will be held at 5 p.m. followed by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard at 6 p.m. Friday evening at the church.

Godfrey Edward Williams was born March 30, 1924 in Freeport, Minnesota to Peter and Magdelena (Finken) Williams. Fritz served during WWII in the Army anti-aircraft division in France. At the age of 14, he started working for Joe Nett and also drove school bus. On January 26, 1957 he married Clara Beuning at Holy Spirit Church in St. Cloud. Fritz owned a Phillips 66 gas station in St. Cloud and then purchased the Freeport Motor Company and the Freeport bus routes in 1973, retiring in 1996.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Schneider of Meire Grove; children, Don (Cindy) Schneider of Meire Grove, Diane Smith of Alexandria, and Deb Schneider of Meire Grove; grandchildren, Kari (Jesse) Allhiser, Craig (Megan) Schneider, Cory Schneider, Ashley Smith, Leah Smith, and Cassy Smith; great-grandson, Laken Schneider; brothers, Martin (Irene) Wolbeck of Sartell and Alfred (Erma) Wolbeck of Richmond; and sister-inlaw, Sandy Wolbeck of Sartell.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents; son, Dale Schneider; seven sisters; and five brothers.

Serving as casket bearers were Craig Schneider, Cory Schneider, Jesse Allhiser, Ashley Smith, Leah Smith, and Cassidy Smith.

Cross bearer was Kari Allhiser and scripture bearer was Diane Smith. Honorary bearers were the St. Mary’s Society.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport and a lifetime member of the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050. Fritz enjoyed hunting, fishing, and had a special talent in his ability to fix just about anything.

Survivors include his wife, Clara Williams of Freeport; children, Jeffrey (Judy) Williams of White Bear Lake, Bruce (Loree) Williams of Freeport, Alan (Mary) Williams of Freeport, Mark (Terry) Williams of Strasburg, Colorado, Linda (Joe) Spadafore of Melrose, Eva Asplin of Audubon, and Roger (Mary Schneeweis) Williams of St. Cloud; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Walter “Butch” Williams of Melrose, Rose (Everett) Hanson of Rochester, Lawrence “Will” (Jan) Williams of Melrose, Christine (Marlow) Ihrke of Eyota, and Edmund (Shirley) Williams of St. Paul; and sisters-in-law, Alice Williams and Doreen Williams.

Fritz was preceded in death by his first wife, Charlotte Hockert; parents; sons, Dale and Keith Williams; and brothers, Clarence “Pete” Williams and Jerome “Jerry” Williams.

I’m Still Carrying the Pizza -By Saralee Perel I was sitting. “I know you could have done this yourself,” she said. “But it was so much easier to let me do it.” And then she said a life-altering sentence, “Getting help should never make you feel bad. It should always make you feel good.”

I will never forget her words.

She tentatively moved her arms to hug me. When we hugged, it was one of the most meaningful hugs of my life.

At home, I plunked myself down on my favorite “plunking” spot. It’s in front of the fireplace where I hang out on large pillows. My husband, Bob, came in and plunked next to me. When I told him about the groceries, he tenderly brushed away my tears with his fingers.

“Sweetheart,” he said. “Why is it so hard for you to ask for help?”

“Probably denial about my physical state.”

“I think it’s two other things,” he said. “One – asking for help makes you feel inferior and two – you think you’re bothering somebody. And three – ” “You said ‘two.’”

“I just thought of a third.”

“I’d so love to hear it.” I covered his face with a pillow.

He took the pillow away and said, “If you do that again, I’ll – ” So I did it again.

He managed to say, “Is this subject a tiny bit touchy?”

“I can handle it,” I lied.

This time I covered my own face with the pillow and said, “I hate this!”

“I know.” And with that, he helped me to a standing position. That’s something he’s done hundreds of times. Yet I have felt guilty every single one of those times . . . until now.

It was because of Tara that I changed. I told Bob my new conclusions: “By asking for help, does that make me inferior? Of course not. Am I bothering someone? Who knows? But if I am, whose problem is that? Will asking for help remind me of the things I can’t do? Heck, yes.”

Bob knew my crusade was successful because of a pizza.

When he opened the pizza box I brought home the next day, he was astonished and said, “It’s round! You asked for help!”

You see, before I met Tara, I’d never let anyone carry a take-out pizza to my truck. Instead, using my cane with my right arm, I’d awkwardly carry the pizza box with my left, resulting in the box constantly tilting one way and then the other. By the time I’d get home, that round pizza would be a smushed pile of cheesy red gunk in the corner of the box.

Bob and I plunked down in front of the fireplace and ate.

“How did it feel to accept help?” he said.

“Well, my new way of thinking helped. But the part about reminding me of things I can’t do? Like carry my own pizza? That didn’t feel good.”

He took cheese off my chin and ate it. (We eat like monkeys.) “Sweetheart, you may never get used to the things you

As always, for the eight years since my spinal cord injury I said, “No thanks.” But that particular day, I was in trouble. I had overdone exercise the day before. Hence, I couldn’t lift my feet to walk and had to shuffle instead. Tara could tell I was hurting. “Let me just help,” she said sweetly.

When I finally said, “I’d love your help,” I should have felt a great sense of liberation because it was the very first time I had agreed to someone helping me in all of these years. Instead, I felt like a failure.

On our way to my truck, Tara and I became friends. But at my truck, 19-year-old Tara became my teacher.

When I eventually agreed to her suggestion to sit in the front seat while she loaded the groceries, I put my head in my hands and cried. “I feel like a two hundred year old helpless wreck. I hate that someone’s putting my groceries in the truck.”

Swanville Jr./ Sr. High is proud to announce Rachel Evans as the November Student of the Month for 7-9th grade.

Rachel is the daughter of Carol and Paul Evans.

Rachel keeps busy with babysitting, shopping, four wheeling, playing volleyball and hanging out with friends.

Her school activities include seventh and eighth grade volleyball and softball. She has also participated in JO Volleyball and softball for the past two years. She is a two-year member of pep band and the Junior High Band. Rachel is also active in her church, helping out in a variety of ways. Her future plans are to become a pediatrician. Her advice for other students is to “Help others whenever you get the chance to!”

Upsala presents Flowers for Algernoon

Featuring a cast of twenty-two students actors from grades 8-12, the Upsala High School Drama Club presented Daniel Keyes’ science fiction classic, Flowers for Algernoon, on November 18-19 in the UAS school auditorium.

The story parallels the progress of a laboratory mouse named Algernon and the mentally retarded Charlie Gordon,

both who had undergone experimental surgery to increase intelligence by artificial means. According to Director Dan Cheney, this was Upsala’s first production of a “drama” in eight years. The yet to be announced annual spring musical is scheduled for April 13-15 with auditions held in late January.

Upsala Jr. High Student of the Month Upsala Area School’s October Junior High Student of the Month is Rachel Prom. Rachel is the daughter of DJ and JoAnne Prom. She has one brother Collin. She is mature and polite and strives for excel-

lence.

Miss Prom participates in band, pep band and Jr. High Knowledge Bowl. She is active in 4-H, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church as a mass server and musician.

Band director Denise Cheney states, “Rachel has excelled from day 1 of picking up the flute. She is very dedicated with her practice time and it shows. She has a beautiful tone and her technique is progressing very rapidly. It is fun to keep giving her more advanced music every week. She always comes back prepared for more.”

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Despite the threat of a Republican legislative challenge, Gov. Dayton last week ordered a statewide vote among certain day care providers to see if they want to form a union. Only those licensed providers who receive state subsidies would be allowed to vote and potentially join the union. It’s estimated that approximately half of Minnesota’s nearly 11,000 child care providers would be affected by this order.

I am not in favor of this move by the Governor and don’t understand the need for a day care union. These people run their own businesses and are not employees in the usual sense of the word. The Legislature sets the amount they receive in state subsidies for working parents who can’t afford to pay the full cost for day care. It seems to fly in the face of good government

that we should have to bargain with a union to set those rates.

I haven’t talked with a single day care provider in our district who favors unionization. And certainly, those who utilize day care are concerned about the increased cost of services this might cause because of the payment of union dues. According to the Governor, joining would be voluntary and anyone could choose not to belong to the union or pay dues. But, what about the concept of those not joining having to “pay their fair share” for the union negotiating certain aspects of a contract? What about a provider currently having clients who receive the state subsidy and, later on, not having any such clients? Could they then leave the union? It also seems to me that truly “voluntary membership” in a union would not work.

The Pope County Daycare Association, representing approximately 80 percent of the county’s licensed providers, voted overwhelmingly Oct. 24th against the unionization of child care. According to a letter sent to me, they felt such a union “wouldn’t benefit providers in out-state Minnesota.” In addition, they see no need for such a plan, adding that a union “might even add more regulations and fees.”

I attended the annual meeting Nov. 16th of the Minnesota Agri-Growth Council. It’s a highlight of the fall season to attend this gathering as they always have top-notch speakers addressing current topics in agriculture. The shaky world economy and our extremely volatile commodity markets are a major concern right now as we work our way past the recession and look to add jobs.

The chief agricultural economist for Wells Fargo and a director of the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank gave interesting talks about what they see ahead for agriculture. I will share some of their thoughts in a future column.

The holiday season is upon us, and from the look outside, so is winter! Our farm received at least five inches of snow last Saturday and areas of Stearns County received double that amount. The forecast, though, is calling for good weather this week for those traveling “over the river and through the woods.” May you have a good Thanksgiving and enjoy time spent with family and friends. Living in this state and in this country is truly something to be thankful for.

Minnesota’s NCLB waive application: The State of Minnesota has applied to the U. S. Department of Education for a waiver of the requirements of the No Child Left Behind law; this is the topic of this week’s column.

The following is a summary of the waiver, as I understand it. The application seeks the following provisions to be waived: 1. 2014 goal of 100% proficiency.

2. Sanctions on schools and districts resulting from not making AYP. 3. Mandatory financial set-asides for School Choice and Supplemental Education Services.

4. Identification of schools and districts in need of improvement, corrective action, and restructuring.

The State must replace NCLB with an alternative accountability system; this would be call the “Multiple Measurements Rating” based on proficiency, growth, reducing the achievement gap and graduation rates. School would be

classified as follows: 1. Reward: Top 15% of Title I schools based on the MMR. These schools would be recognized as exemplary schools.

2. Focus: Lowest 10% of Title I schools based on proficiency and achievement gap reduction. These schools must work with the MDE to implement serious interventions aimed at improving the school’s lowest performing subgroups.

3. Priority: The 5% most persistently low-performing Title I schools.

These schools would have to implement turnaround plans to drastically change the way the school operates.

While the old system would be replaced with a new system that would based on multiple measures, and most importantly on student growth; there will still be an accountability system for schools and our focus will continue to be on student achievement.

Annual Christmas Concert in Grey Eagle and Upsala The Grey Eagle Community Chorus will present its concert of Christmas music on Sunday, December 4 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle and at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala at 2:00 p.m. on Dec. 4th.

Ron Grove directs and Susan Roe accompanies the chorus for this annual event. The 30 plus members of the chorus are from Grey Eagle and the sur-

rounding area.

Come and listen to the Christmas story told through song from Advent through Epiphany. The chorus will sing the spirited Go’in to Bethlehem, the familiar Do You Hear What I Hear, and the spiritual, Amen, Go Tell It! The concert is free and refreshments will be provided in the churches’ fellowship halls following the concerts.

Local Municipality Minutes Burtrum City November 7, 2011 The meeting of the Burtrum City Council was called to order on Monday, Nov. 7, 2011 at 7 p.m. by Mayor Allen. All council members answered roll call.

Minutes of the Oct. 3rd meeting were approved on a motion by Anna Payne and seconded by Ron Strassburg. Upon vote motion carried.

Finance report was read and approved on a motion by Jenny Ahrendt and seconded by Clara Taft. Upon vote motion carried.

Checks number 6923 thru 6931 were approved for payment on a motion by Ron Strassburg and seconded by Anna Payne. Upon vote motion carried.

Under old business, the dog problem is improving. Contact Mayor if there is a problem.

Under new business, the Clerk informed the council about the Fire Board meeting. The Mayor or Clerk will attend.

Burnhamville Township October 25, 2011 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held October 25, 2011 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Vicechair Louis Thompson. Members present include Supervisors: Louis Thompson, Bruce Johnson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; and Treasurer Pam Throener. Absent: Mike Berscheit. Others present: Erv Herdering.

Sup. Johnson made a motion to approve the minutes of the September 27, 2011 regular meeting. Motion seconded by

Sup. Thompson. Motion was made by Sup. Thompson to pay all bills numbered 4550 through 4558: Rev. $498.65, R&B $7,509.03. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motions passed.

Supervisors were notified of trees in the ditches that need to be removed on Flower Trail and 331st Ave. The redesign of intersection of 321st Ave and County 104 has been marked, but has not been worked on before tonight’s meeting. Sup. Thompson will keep checking on the progress.

The tree cuttings along 210th St. have not been removed from the road right of way. The board will work with Bruce township if brush is not remove

by November 15.

All townships are supposed to have a sign maintenance and replacement program in place by January 2012. Although this may be changed the township should

be prepared. After discussion the board decided to wait for a model from the township association to base our program from and tabled the discussion until next meeting.

The road inspection list was reviewed.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $126,082.00 before tonight’s bills. Report was approved with a motion by Sup. Thompson and seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Johnson to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed. The meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m.

Next regular meeting will be on November 29, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

Grief resources provide help during the holidays

The winter holidays are generally perceived as “the most wonderful time of the year.” During the holiday season, many of us will gather with family and friends to celebrate long-kept traditions and reminisce of days gone by. But if you are facing grief after the death of a loved one, the holidays may be sad and painful. How do you cope? Honor your emotional life - not others’ expectations.

St. Cloud Hospital chaplain, Nicole Schmidt, encourages people to set boundaries on expectations for holiday gatherings that honor and give room to grieve. It might be helpful to have a family meeting to discuss what you might need to honor your emotional life. It is important that you say what you want and what you need. What are your fears about this holiday season? That you will cry or be lonely? Name your fears and share them with someone you trust. Observe the day in a way that has meaning for you.

Holidays often center on certain traditions and rituals. You may find that traditions are an important way to keep your loved one’s memory alive. However, it may be more comforting to develop

new rituals to help lessen the pain and immediacy of the loss.

“Honoring what is in your heart is what is important during the holidays and throughout the year. Express how you feel with someone you trust,” said Schmidt.

Sometimes, these otherwise joyful gatherings are tinged with sadness as families struggle to deal with the loss of a loved one. Today, I Get To Choose

I woke up early today, excited over all I get to do before the clock strikes midnight. I have responsibilities to fulfill today. I am important. My job is to choose what kind of day I am going to have.

Today I can complain because the weather is rainy or I can be thankful that the grass is getting watered for free.

Today I can feel sad that I don’t have more money or I can be glad that my finances encourage me to plan my purchases wisely and guide me away from waste.

Today I can grumble about my health or I can rejoice that I am alive.

Today I can lament over all that my parents didn’t give me when I was growing up or I can feel grateful that they allowed me to be born.

Today I can cry because roses have thorns or I can celebrate that thorns have roses.

Today I can mourn my lack of friends or I can excitedly embark upon a quest to discover new relationships.

Today I can whine because I have to go to work or I can shout for joy because I have a job.

Today I can complain because I have to go to school or eagerly open my mind and fill it with rich new tidbits of knowledge.

Today I can murmur dejectedly because I have to do housework or I can feel honored because I’ve been provided shelter for my mind and body.

Today stretches ahead of me, waiting to be shaped. And here I am, the sculptor who gets to do the shaping.

Thanksgiving Weather

Turkeys will thaw in the morning, then warm in the oven to an afternoon high near 190F. The kitchen will turn hot and humid, and if you bother the cook, be ready for a severe squall or cold shoulder.
