Brush up on your sales techniques -By Harvey Mackay Years ago, a salesperson friend told me a story about his daughter.

She insisted on buying her favorite gum drops from a particular candy store owned by Nick, even though a more convenient candy store opened in a shopping mall.

The reason she said, “Nick always gives me more candy. The people in the other store always take it away.”

Nick knew to put less than a pound of candy on the scale and added to it, while the other store put more than a pound on the scale and then took some away. The visual makes all the difference.

As a life-long salesperson, I’m always interested in various sales techniques. Sales is the lifeblood that drives business. As I always say, there are no jobs unless someone brings the business through the front door. Career success often depends on your ability to sell a product, a service or an idea.

Knowing something about your customer is just as important as knowing everything about your product. I have been preaching about the power of the Mackay 66 Customer Profile for my entire career. It’s a tool to help you humanize your selling strategy. To be successful in life – and especially in sales – you must have a deep-down burning desire to help people. Studies show that you can’t talk business all the time. Your customers are people first!

I developed this 66-question customer profile when I was 25 years old. (The Mackay 66 is available for free on my website – www. harveymackay.com.) We want to know, based on routine conversation and observation, what

our customers are like as human beings. What do they feel strongly about? What they are most proud of having achieved? Any status symbols in their office? In other words, we want to know the person behind the desk – or on the other side of the candy counter!

Sell the dream. A friend of mine told me a story about his realtor. He always wanted to own a house with lots of trees in the yard. The realtor took him out to the suburbs and showed him a yard with 15 trees in it, but the house was overpriced. Whenever my friend asked about the steep price, the realtor would start counting the trees. He told me, “He sold me 15 trees and threw in the house.” I say there is no price for a dream.

Read the situation. A persistent salesperson refused to leave when the boss’ assistant said he was not in the office. An hour passed, then two. Finally, weary of being a prisoner in his own office, the boss let in the salesperson, asking, “How did you know I was in?”

“Easy,” explained the salesperson. “Your assistant was working.”

There are other ways to read the room too.

Pay attention to the visual clues in the office, lobby or wherever you are meeting. They are great conversation starters.

Don’t put too many ties on the counter.

When I was in high school, I worked at a department store in the men’s clothing department. The manager told me to never put more than three ties on the counter to make the buyer’s decision easier and not confusing.

Get the customer in the mood to buy.

A woman flashed a rather large diamond

ring to her friends and called it her “mood ring,” explaining “this always improves my mood when I’m feeling overworked and underappreciated.” The salesperson sensed her mood and let her try on a variety of rings. The customer appreciated that she was listened to and chose her favorite.

Law of Large Numbers. The insurance industry is built on this principle. There are approximately 340 million living Americans.

Insurance people can tell you within onefourth of one percent just how many of us are going to die within the next 12 months – and how – and where – and in what age bracket, sex, color and creed. The only thing they can’t tell us is which ones!

So, if you can’t be number one, the best position you can shoot for is number two. Because when number one has trouble, number two is there to be of service.

You don’t need a big close, as many sales reps believe. You risk losing your customer when you save all the good stuff for the end.

As important as a good close is, you won’t get to that point if you don’t grab their attention early on and answer their needs along the way.

Mackay’s Moral: You aren’t just selling a product; you’re selling a customer!

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Minnesota History

the Dakotas, where a rather large battle was fought near Bismark, North Dakota.

The reports of the campaign of 1863 must include some actual figures pertaining to the the activities of the Minnesota troops during that year. The fighting occurred in North Dakota. The Minnesota troops marched 1200 miles, fought 3 serious battles. They drove 8 to 10,000 Native Americans west of the Missouri River. The losses sustained for our Minnesota troops were only 7 killed and 3 wounded. The troop numbers included 3,053 infantry, 800 cavalry and 148 artillery men.

Thousands of newly arrived individuals and families had moved to Minnesota. Some were from the eastern part of the United States, but there were many that came from Europe.

These people built homes on the homestead lands which were usually a distance from their neighbors or far from any possible assistance in the event of an attack. Most of the European immigrants were not able to easily communicate with other languages and had no formal training in the use of firearms.

This made them very easy victims of those wanting to steel their goods and physically harm them. If word of a potential arrival of an enemy force was known ahead of time, the farms were vacated and the inhabitants went to town for protection made possible from large groups. The problem was that the larger unorganized groups lacked leadership and experience as to how to repel attacks from other humans. However human intelligence and their situation caused them to learn rather quickly. *Information gathered from Flandrau, The History of Minnesota and Tales of the Frontier.

Although Minnesota was actually what could be considered to be a very young and under developed state, when the Civil War was getting underway, President Lincoln requested the Minnesota leaders to send troops to help the Union to

fight the Confederacy.

Minnesota did have a small military, but at the President's request, Minnesota sent 22,970 troops. This represented about 14% of Minnesota's population. Minnesota troops were involved in some of the bigger battles like Gettysburg and the battle of Bull Run. They were generally praised for their courage and fighting ability. The casualty count of Minnesota's troops from the Civil War was 607 killed, 1647 died from disease and thousands wounded.

Not long after the troops left Minnesota to head east, the Native American tribes in southern Minnesota thought it would be a good time to begin getting rid of the settlers that were taking over their land. They began an uprising primarily because they felt that they could do more damage when so many of our military were fighting far from home. After the original Native American uprising began many of the Minnesota troops were sent home and there were many serious conflicts in the area around New Ulm, Mankato and St. Peter.

As the fighting continued, it moved north and west. Several groups were sent from Fort Snelling to St. Cloud, to Sauk Centre, then to Alexandria and then to Fort Abercrombie, which was on the river between Breckenridge and Fargo. Several battles occurred in Northern Minnesota, including one at Leach Lake. The Native Americans were chased into

Grey Eagle Community Chorus Presents Advent Concert December 3 The Grey Eagle Community Chorus will present its annual Advent concert on Sunday, December 3, at 3 p.m. at the Grey Eagle United Methodist Church, 30422 County 2.

“Across the Seasons” will bring together songs of hope and harvest leading to Godspell at Christmas, a choir cantata written by Stephen Schwartz and arranged by conductor Joan Wingert.

Godspell at Christmas tells the Christmas story with narration and energetic songs that

will leave the listener inspired for the season.

The concert program will include the Grey Eagle Community Hand Bell Choir playing Advent selections directed by Robert Kutter.

The free concert is a gift to the community intended to lift spirits and prepare hearts for Advent and Christmas.

From the Desk of Pastor Bruce A couple of weeks ago, Lori and I watched a movie titled “The Mulligan.” The movie is about a very successful business owner, but sadly he was failing at life. During one scene the main character is on the golf course, primarily to meet a possible business partner. The man’s family was not there with him, so the prospective partner walked away. The more the man tried to be successful, the more he failed, especially at golf.

He met a guy at the golf course, whose nick name was “the old golf pro” who tried to help him see his need for Jesus. I loved the way “the old pro” went about getting him to see his need. He mentioned, to the man that his game of golf was failing because the rest of his life was failing. He also said that maybe he ought to take a “mulligan," not only in golf but in life as well. A mulligan is when you make a very bad shot and your golfing partner allows you an undeserved favor, a “do-over," without any penalty on your score card. Scripture calls this GRACE! The “old golf pro” then asked what he needed help with in his life. There were two things: a “do-over” for him and his wife who had been separated for 5 years and a mulligan to rebuild a relationship with his son, who hat-

Daryl D. Breden

Daryl D. Breden, 53 year old resident of Long Prairie, MN, passed away Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at his home. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, at 2:00 P.M., with Rev. Dave Sperstad officiating. A visitation will be an hour before the service, from 1:00-2:00 P.M., at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls on November 30, 2023.

Daryl Duane Breden was born on August 2, 1970, in Edina, MN. On August 18, 1970, he became the son of John and Lois Breden in Randall, MN. He grew up on the family farm near Randall, MN. Daryl attended Dr. S.G. Knight Elementary School and Little Falls High School and graduated in 1988. Daryl’s occupation was mainly a welder, and loved mechanic work; he could be found tinkering and working on vehicles. He was very knowledgeable in many areas and could figure out how to repair or fix almost anything. Daryl loved the outdoors and could found many times in the nearby fields agate picking, and loved being out in nature.

Daryl is survived by his children, Jonathan Breden and Mackenzie Breden; mother, Lois Breden; brother, Michael Breden; fiancé, Miah Moeller; and grandson, Riley.

A memorial service was held Monday, November 20, 2023 at the Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, Stein Chapel in Long Prairie for Leslie Lawrence, 78, of Long Prairie who passed away November 11, 2023 at the CentraCare Hospital in Long Prairie.

Leslie was born to Donald and Lyle (Jonap) Hart on January 23, 1945 in Minneapolis. At a young age, her family moved to Long Prairie where she graduated from high school and went on to attend Macalester College before earning a degree at the University of Minnesota. She married Robert Lawrence with whom she had one child, Nancy. In 1989, Leslie married John Tiegen in Richland, Washington. They moved back to Long Prairie to take part in the family business, Hart Trailer Sales, which they operated until their retirement in 2014.

Summers at Big Birch Lake cabin created many cherished memories. She always loved boating. Leslie deeply loved animals. Raising and training horses occupied much of her time. Many abandoned dogs and cats found refuge in her loving care. A winter home in Apache Junction, AZ lengthened her ability to ride motorcycle. Camaraderie and friendships developed in Harley Davidson riding groups were always special for her.

Leslie is survived by her husband John Tiegen; daughter Nancy Hendrickson of Long Prairie; step-son Jason (Kimberlie) Tiegen of Alexandria; step-daughters Jennifer (Peter) Peyerl of St. Michael and Lisa (David) Wright of Long Prairie; a sister Lynne (Jim) Smith of Reno, NV; grandchildren Tyler and Tara Hendrickson; Jacob, Luke, Jared and Matthew Tiegen; Alexis, Peyton and Tiegen Peyerl; Noah, Madison, Makenna Koltes; Alaina and Alison Wright.

She is preceded in death by her parents and in-laws Melvin and Alice Tiegen.

Swanville Senior High Student of the Month

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the October Senior High Student of the Month, senior Karley Loven. Karley is the daughter of John and Tanya Loven.

She enjoys both playing and watching sports, weight lifting, reading and being with friends and family. Karley plans to attend college for psychology, with her ultimate goal to become a psychiatrist. She participates in many school activities, in both the areas of sports and other extracurriculars. She has been in volleyball, basketball and softball since seventh grade.

She has served on student council since seventh grade. Karley has been on the A Honor Roll all of her junior and senior high school career and was Swanville Schools nominee for the ExCel Award. She has been recognized for All-Conference in volleyball, basketball and softball. She was also selected for All Academic for Prairie Conference in all three sports. Karley was on the All Area Team for Morrison County for basketball. She has been invited to Germany to play basketball for America’s Team for her basketball and leadership skills. Isaac’s favorite thing about school is hanging out with his friends and participating in as many activities as possible. His advice to other students is “listen to your parents and work hard.”

The extended plan you’re talking about is garbage. In reality, it means the loans are never paid back. The extended plan is 30 years of not even making the principal payment.

No interest is paid, and they don’t touch the principal. The whole thing works backwards for 30 years, and it’s the very definition of a stupid government program.

I really don’t think you want your daughters to be part of something like this.

But that means you’re going to be stuck with paying off these loans. You might as well just own it and pay them off now.

The antifreeze serves several purposes. It is there to prevent freeze-up, boil-over, and to assist in the prevention of extremely damaging rust and corrosion in the cooling system. Even though coolant looks good and passes a freeze test it may fail a PH test. If the coolant does not have the proper PH, rust and corrosion can damage gaskets, the radiator, and heater core, or scale can form in the passages. Test strips used during yearly checkups at a shop will verify the PH and need for changing which usually falls somewhere in the two-to-five-year range.

Grey Eagle City • October 3, 2023 The emergency meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joseph Arnzen at 7:00 pm, on the 3rd day of October 2023 in Council Chambers. Council members present were Brad Johnson, Roland Ahrendt, Brian Hollenkamp and Chris Browen. There were no council members absent. Also in attendance was Beth Ramacher and guest: Jarvis Butler.

The drainage issue on the south end of the Fire Hall was discussed. Jarvis Butler presented a plan that would include installing 8” PVC pipe and multiple catch basins. A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve proceeding with the plan, if the three neighboring residents agreed to it. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The Clerk will work with the City Attorney to get necessary paperwork, including easements for the three property owners.

The City will need to contact Bryan Bye to get a legal description of the area to be covered by the easement on each parcel. This information will then be given to the City Attorney to draft easements for the property owners to sign.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve the quote from Klemish Tree Service for $2450.00 to remove the hollow basswood tree at Bass Lake and multiple stumps within the City Park. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A quote from Eagle Fabricating was reviewed for a basket/cage for the tractor. The Council suggested getting additional quotes and asking Jeremy Kerzman about renting his lift.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve the 2023-2024 contract from Herdering

for snow removal. A second was made by Brad Johnson and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve the 2024 contract from the Todd County Sheriff’s Office, with a new hourly rate of $45 and keep the current patrol of 44 hours per month.

The resolution is as follows: RESOLUTION NO 2023-10: RESOLUTION TO INCREASE BULK WATER RATES WHEREAS, The Council of the City of Grey Eagle recommends an increase in the bulk water rates; and WHERAS, The Council of the City of Grey Eagle indicates said water increase would not be applied to the residential water rates; and NOW, THEREFORE, The City Council of the City of Grey Eagle, Todd County, State of Minnesota, herby resolves: 1. The bulk water rates shall increase to $10 per thousand gallons.

That the City Council of the City of Grey Eagle formally accepts the donation from Jeri Ahrens for the Fire Department.

2. That the City Clerk is authorized and directed to make the appropriate revenue and expenditure budget adjustments as needed to reflect this donation and its intended use.

Maintenance Report: Tschida reported on water and sewer levels as well as the various tasks done throughout the city. Park bathrooms are winterized.

City Office Report: Popp reviewed the November Calendar. The trick or treating at local businesses was a great success.

Planning Commission: Larry Bartells reported on the Planning Commission’s meeting and approved two permits.

New Business: ODUB Assessments to the County Popp presented the current list of overdue utility bills. Bartells moved to approve assessing any delinquent city utility bills to the property taxes as of November 30, 2023, via Morrison County, 2nd by Rene. Motion carried unanimously.

Acknowledgements: Upsala Heritage Days donated $5,000 towards the city park restrooms.

Practicing Contentment This Holiday Season

By Rachel Cruz - I love Thanksgiving almost as much as I love Christmas. There’s just something about the family time, and the official kickoff to the whole holiday season that feels extra cozy and magical. But with the start of the season also comes more pressure, higher expectations, and countless opportunities to spend crazy amounts of money on everything from plane tickets to monogrammed organic cotton napkins. So here are five tips for keeping your expectations realistic and your spending in check throughout the holidays this year.

Set healthy boundaries: My good friend Dr. John Delony always encourages people to decide in advance what their holiday boundaries are going to be, and then be firm about them. This will help you not cave to the unnecessary expectations we can often place on ourselves (or others can place on us) during the holidays. And you can set boundaries around all kinds of things—like time, technology and money—that will then inform the choices you make throughout the season.

For example, visiting family is important, but if you’re trying to get out of debt and already planning to travel to see your family for Christmas, maybe you choose to stay home for Thanksgiving.

Or maybe your idea of the perfect holiday is one where everyone is talking and genuinely connecting, so you set a “no phones allowed” rule for the day.

Stick to your budget: Speaking of money boundaries, don’t let yourself head into the holiday season without having a monthly budget in place.

Now, all you Black Friday shoppers, hear me out.

Being on a budget doesn’t mean you can’t spend money—it just means you tell your money where to go by deciding in advance how much you’re going to spend and what you’re going to spend it on. Then you actually have the freedom to spend that money without the headaches and stress that come with accidentally overspending!

Prioritize generosity: My dad always says generosity is the most fun you can have with money, and I agree. And while we should make giving part of our budget year round, this is such a special

time to be intentional about blessing others. So, brainstorm some creative ways you can give your money, time and talents. If you have a spouse and kids, involve them in this process too, and enjoy all the fun that comes with an others-focused perspective.

Keep a gratitude journal: Not to get super cheesy, but in the whirlwind of holiday activities, it’s easy to lose sight of the meaning behind all of it. So if you’re a journaler like I am—and even if you’re usually not— set aside some time to get quiet and jot down what you’re truly grateful for this year. I have a Contentment Journal with guided prompts you can use for this, or you can just write down some reflections on your own. This really sets the tone and gets you in the right mindset for the rest of the season.

Talk about contentment with your family: This time of year can come with so much focus on all the “stuff” we want or don’t have yet. Let this season naturally spark conversations about contentment and appreciating everything your family already has. This is a great principle to keep in mind year-round, since comparison and wanting to keep up with the Joneses can lead us down a slippery slope financially and emotionally—and contentment protects us from all of that. If you have kids, talk to them about the fact that it’s okay to want and have nice things, but there are other things in life that matter much, much more.
