Mastering the art of managing

Twenty-five hundred years ago a new Chinese emperor took the throne of the Middle Kingdom. Because he was only 18, he called upon the court’s wisest adviser.

“O learned sage. O venerable counselor,” said the young emperor, “you advised my grandfather the emperor for many years. What is the single most important advice you can give me now for ruling my kingdom?”

And the adviser, who was the famous Chinese philosopher Confucius, replied, “First, you must define the problem.”

Certainly sage advice – except most of us don’t have a Confucius to consult.

But we can learn plenty from studying the advice of top CEOs and business leaders.

For example, Anne Mulcahy, former Chairman and CEO of Xerox, was asked by Fortune Magazine what was the best advice she had ever received in business. She said it occurred at a

One of them, a plainspoken, selfmade, streetwise guy, came up to Mulcahy and said: “When everything gets really complicated and you feel overwhelmed, think about it this way. You gotta do three things. First, get the cow out of the ditch. Second, find out how the cow got into the ditch. Third, make sure you do whatever it takes so the cow doesn’t go into the ditch again.”

What a great management tip because when you break it down, it covers just about every situation. I’d like to share some other gems with you that will help you “define the problem.”

• Make your calendar your best friend. As soon as you book an appointment or meeting, choose an appropriate date to prepare for it, and prepare a to-do list for that day. Allow sufficient time to gather and review all the information and material you might need.

Take time to prepare so you don’t have to waste time in despair!

• Don’t waste precious time fretting about things over which you have no control. Although taking control of the details and tasks in your life is essential to becoming an effective priority manager, there are things that occasionally pop up over which you have little or no control. When that happens, don’t fight

• Manage the function, not the paperwork. Remember that your job is to manage a specific function within the company, whatever that may be. There might be a lot of paperwork that goes with the job, but don’t let that distract you from your real responsibility.

• Get out of your office. Management By Walking Around (MBWA) does work. You make yourself more approachable. You get information firsthand. You find out what’s really happening. The auto pioneer Henry Ford was once asked why he made a habit of visiting his executives when problems arose rather than inviting them to his own office. “I go to them to save time,” Ford explained, “and besides I’ve found I can leave their office a lot quicker than I can get them to leave mine.”

• Delegate the easy stuff. The things you do well are the things to delegate. Hold on to those that are challenging and difficult. That is how you will grow.

• Don’t get caught up in “looking good.” Appearances can be deceiving.

Don’t try to act big. Don’t exclude rank and file employees. And don’t think you know it all. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honest.

• Learn from the mistakes of others. You can’t live long enough to make them all yourself.

• Open your ears and close your mouth. Your associates, your employees, your suppliers, your customers all have something of value in what they have to say. Listen to the people around you. You will never learn what it is if you drown them out by talking all the time. Remember, the only thing that can come out of your mouth is something you already know. Shut up and learn.

• Practice what you preach. To lead, you have to lead by example. Don’t expect your people to work unpaid overtime if you leave early every day. Don’t book yourself into a four star hotel on business trips and expect your employees to stay in the motel off the freeway.

Obituaries Gothard T. Rademacher

Gothard T. Rademacher, age 95, of Melrose and formerly of Freeport, was called to Heaven on Sunday, November 17, 2013 at the Pine Haven Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 22 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in Freeport.

Goldenaires Senior Citizens will pray at 4 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 5 p.m.

Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Gothard Theodore Rademacher was born August 14, 1918 in Krain Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Carl and Frances (Benolken) Rademacher. He lived on the home farm until 1943 when he purchased the ancestral farm of his future wife. He married Irene Hoeschen on September 12, 1944 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. The couple farmed near Freeport until 1955 and then for a year near Rice. In 1956, they returned to Freeport and Gothard secured a job with D. H. Blattner and Sons Construction Company. He worked for them for 27 years; including time in Oklahoma and Colorado building earthen dams.

catching fish when his fellow fishermen did not. Many of those fish were cleaned and given to family and friends to enjoy.

Gothard enjoyed gardening and shared his crop with many happy recipients. He played many different card games, which he seldom lost. He liked the jingle of his winnings in his pocket. Gothard often willingly assisted family and friends when they had a project that required extra hands. He was a hardworking man and passed his strong work ethic on to his children. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport.

Gothard is survived by his wife of 69 years, Irene Rademacher of Melrose; children, Chuck (Marilyn) Rademacher of Albany, Jim (Ann) Rademacher of Pittsford, VT, Jane (Jerry) Schulte of St. Cloud, Don (Patti) Rademacher of Wayzata, and Jack (Kim) Rademacher of Fon Du Lac, WI; 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Gothard was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Barbara Gasperlin, Henrietta Ostendorf, Petronella Rademacher, Bertha Voller, Ann Voller, Rose Rolfes, Marie Schiffler, and brothers, Thomas, Anton, Norbert, Paul, and Larry Rademacher.

Serving as casket bearers will be Chuck Rademacher, Jim Rademacher, Don Rademacher, Jack Rademacher, Jane Schulte, and Jerry Schulte. Cross bearer will be Josh Rademacher and scripture bearer will be Kathy Black. Gift bearers will be Jim Schulte, Michael Rademacher, and Emily Rademacher. Readers will be Erin Rademacher and Peter Rademacher.

The eulogy will be read by Chuck Rademacher.

M a r t h a Nilson, age 90, of Sartell, formerly of Upsala, passed away at her home on Saturday, November 16, 2013.

A Funeral Service was held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, N o v e m b e r 20, 2013, at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Upsala, MN, with Rev. Trisha Jorgenson officiating. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery in Upsala.

Martha Soltis was born on May 2, 1923, in South Elmdale, Minnesota, the daughter of George & Mary (Kohanowski) Soltis who were immigrants from Slovakia. She cherished her Slovakian heritage and culture. She attended country school and graduated from Holdingford High School. She continued her education at St. Cloud Teachers College and St. Cloud State University where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She began her teaching career in Isanti, MN. On June 15, 1946, she was united in marriage to Roger Nilson at South Elmdale

attended business school in Minneapolis, MN. Carmen worked at McKesson & Robbins for seven years. She was united in marriage to Jim DeFoe on July 14, 1958 at St. John the Baptist Church in Swanville, MN. Carmen enjoyed playing the organ, card games, Scrabble and going to the Casino. Carmen is survived by her children, Tim (Mary) DeFoe of Eagan, MN, Renee (Steve) Burnstein of Elkridge, MD, Sharon (Dennis) Venske of Randall, MN, and Gayl (John) Tschida of Rice, MN; grandchildren, Chris, Ashley, Aaron, Matthew, and Benjamin; and greatgranddaughter, Madison.

Carmen was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Ruby (Jahncke) Molde; husband, Jim; sister, Arline Cichon; and infant sister, Bernadine.

Pallbearers were Chris DeFoe, Matthew Burnstein, Benjamin Burnstein, John Tschida, Steve Burnstein, and Ross Bollin.

Congregational Church. The couple made their home near Upsala where they farmed and raised four children. Martha returned to teaching in Holdingford and Upsala after her children started school. She enjoyed cooking, baking, entertaining with lots of food, camping, and crafts. The couple had a booth at the Little Falls Annual Craft Fair for many years. Martha especially enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was a member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Upsala and served in various capacities in the church. Martha will always be remembered for her endless energy, her dedicated teaching, her zest for life, and her great love of people.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Nancy (Jim) Koetter of Little Falls, MN, Randy (Sheila) Nilson of Burtrum, MN, Betty (Mark) Craft of Princeton, MN and Rick (Lori) Nilson of St. Cloud, MN; 12 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren and over 300 nieces and nephews.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents, George & Mary Soltis; husband, Roger Nilson (November 1, 2012); and 12 siblings.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, We’ve been supporting our son while he’s in college. He just finished his sophomore year, but he told us the other day he has dropped out of school and isn’t going back. He’s been playing in a band on weekends, and he has this vague idea of becoming a musician. We don’t think this is a good idea, but we still want to be supportive … just not too supportive. We want him to be financially independent, as well.

How should we handle this?

-Karen Dear Karen, This kid is about to have some problems. Not only has he made a bad decision, but he should have consulted with you guys before he quit school.

He owed you that much if you were supporting him this whole time.

In my opinion, you and your husband have one job right now. That job is to stand back and let life happen to this kid. If he thinks he’s a man, let him go out and prove it. Wish him the best and tell him you hope he becomes the rich and famous rock star he wants to be. But make sure he understands you’re not going to support him financially when he’s doing something you both feel is a bad idea. The First National Bank of Mom and Dad is officially closed!

Understand that I’m not suggesting

you turn your backs on this guy. Let him know how much you both love him and that you’ll be praying for him. Invite him over for dinner once in a while, stay in touch, and make sure he knows that family deals like Thanksgiving and Christmas are still business as usual.

However, as far as paying for his rent, utilities, gas, food and cell phone bill?

That stuff’s not happening. This may sound tough, but it was his decision.

In the end, let him know you’ll be there to help just like before if he wises up and decides to finish school. But until then? Little boy, you signed up for this trip!

-Jack Dear Jack, If you’re following my plan, the first thing you should do is set aside an emergency fund of $1,000. That’s Baby Step 1. Next comes Baby Step 2, which means paying off all of your debt except for your house. This would include your car. During this time you should temporarily stop any kind of investing and retirement contributions.

Once the only debt left is your mortgage, it’s time to move on to Baby Step 3. Now you concentrate on growing your emergency fund to the point where you have three to six months of expenses set aside. Once this is done, you can attack Baby Step 4, which is investing 15 percent of your pre-tax income for retirement. For you, it would mean restarting the contributions to your 401(k).

The Long Prairie/Grey Eagle Horse judging team traveled to Rocking R farm east of Rice, MN for the Region 2 Horse judging contest Wednesday, Nov.13th.

They competed against teams from Brainerd, Upsala, Staples/Motley, Little Falls, Grand Rapids, Duluth and many others. This was the first time any of the team members had competed in a horse judging contest. They took home a commanding 1st place finish in the contest. Brandon Bundy took 1st place individual, followed closely by Laura Becker, placing 3rd. Abby Borgstrom and Matt Roe also had a very solid day. Its a great moment as an FFA advisor, to watch students study, practice, and show that much skill during a contest.

Congratulations to the team, they will be competing at state in the spring. So far LPGE FFA has qualified two 1st place teams and a 5th for state competition.

St. Cloud Hospital, Life Transitions offers suicide survivor video conference

St. Cloud Hospital Behavioral Health and Spiritual Care departments are co-hosting a suicide survivor video conference from noon to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 23 at St. Cloud Hospital, Hoppe Auditorium. These 90-minute conferences for survivors of suicide loss will take place simultaneously throughout the United States and internationally to provide a network of healing as survivors connect with others who have survived the tragedy of suicide loss, and express and

understand the powerful emotions they experience.

For survivors of suicide loss who don’t live near a conference site or who find it difficult to attend in person, the broadcast also will be available live on the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention website at www.afsp.org.

D a l t o n Louden has been named the October Student of the Month for Upsala Junior High School. Dalton is an eighth grader at UAS and is the son of Brett and Tanda Louden.

Dalton participates in football, wrestling, baseball and 4-H. Dalton’s favorite class is Agriculture because “…I get to use my imagination a lot.” Dalton feels that football is the most valuable activity he participates in because “…it is a very tough sport and you need to be focused and determined. Swanville Student Council sponsored a blood drive with the American Red Cross on November 12. It was a successful drive with 89 units collected throughout the day with many of these being student donations. Student Council also sponsored a hat day where the students K-12 could wear their hat in school with a $1 donation to the American Red Cross. Amanda Rieffer, Student Council President, presented a check for $144 to Nicole Quistorff, a representative from the American Red Cross.

In addition to his extra-curricular activities, Dalton enjoys building wood projects.

Outside of school, Dalton enjoys riding dirt bike, snowmobiling, and hanging out with family and friends. In the future, Dalton would like to join the military, retire after 30 years, and then run a huge farm. Dalton’s advice to his classmates is “Live life a quarter-mile at a time and never give up.”

Paul Anderson Thought for Addressing radon; rise in property taxes the week: contradicts earlier claims A series of radon-awareness town hall meeting will be held in the district this week and next. The first is scheduled for the Glenwood Senior Center at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21. Next week, on Tuesday, Nov. 26, meetings will be held in Melrose and Sauk Centre. The Melrose meeting takes place at the city office and starts at 11:30 a.m., while the meeting in Sauk Centre will be later than same day, at 4:30 p.m., also at the city offices.

According to officials from the Minnesota Dept. of Health, radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers in this country. Approximately 21,000 deaths each year are at-

tributed to radon in the United States. It’s estimated around 40 percent of Minnesota homes have levels of radon that are worrisome, and health officials encourage all homeowners to test their place of residence.

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and it’s a good time to test homes for the dangerous gas that occurs naturally in the environment. Personnel from the Dept. of Health, along with folks from the local Public Health offices, will be on hand to answer questions and hand out free radon test kits. I encourage all residents of the area to attend one of the meetings and learn about the dangers of high levels of radon in homes and how to mitigate the gas if levels are determined to be high.

A recent announcement by the Minnesota Dept. of Revenue caused some head-scratching. After compiling data from preliminary levy amounts set by local units of government, it appears that property taxes will increase by over 1 percent next year. That contradicts an earlier announcement predicting property taxes would actually decrease. The reason for the optimistic earlier figure was that increases in local government aid (LGA) would allow for lower property taxes. Al-

though final levies will be set in December and they could be lowered from their September levels, it appears that property taxes on a statewide basis will not decrease.

A breakdown of the numbers shows that cities raised their preliminary levies by 2.1 percent, counties by 1.5 percent, townships by 2.1 percent, and schools by 2.6 percent. It was back in July that Gov. Dayton said that property taxes next year would reverse a long-term trend and actually decrease by 1.5 percent. Many were skeptical of that prediction because it’s up to local officials to determine their levies, and they could choose to spend their additional state aid instead of lowering taxes.

A constituent raised a concern about Minnesota moving to a 10-percent level of biodiesel during summer months. An announcement from the Dept. of Agri-

culture said that conditions allowing the increase have been met, and Minnesota will move to that level next July. The concern raised had to do with a certain car manufacturer voiding its warranty on diesel engines with biofuel levels higher than 5 percent. I checked with officials at the department and was told that, according to federal law, a manufacturer cannot void its warranty for the higher blend of bio because it is an “approved fuel” according to the EPA. Other states, Illinois for example, currently offer incentives for diesel fuel with blends of 11 percent or higher, and warranty coverage was not voided.

Obama’s Obamacare Flip Flop

By State Sen. Paul Gazelka, District 9 Last Thursday afternoon President Obama held a press conference at the White House announcing his decision to allow insurance companies to continue canceled health plans for one year, even though they may not meet requirements stated in the Affordable Care Act, (Obamacare). This decision essentially amends a law already enacted and without consent of Congress. As a result in Minnesota, Governor Dayton and the Commerce Commissioner will have authority to determine how to proceed in dealing with the Obamacare disaster.

Unfortunately for us, Governor Dayton believes that President Obama’s healthcare decision reversal was the right thing to do for Minnesotans. We must never forget that President Obama lied to the American people and Governor Dayton is perpetuating this lie to Minnesotans on behalf of the President.

President Obama promised that Americans could keep their health plans and doctors if they chose to, but the truth is, we can’t. The bottom line is Obamacare is bad public policy for Minnesotans and all Americans. You deserve better.

Each year Minnesota health insurers undergo a rigorous regulatory process at the Department of Commerce to have their rates and products approved.

Health plan products were changed this year to meet Obamacare requirements.

Insurance companies have been planning for over three years to deal with the impact of this train wreck known as Obamacare. Now, at the last minute the president wants to give Americans the option to keep policies they have already canceled. We’re in the 9th inning and the president thinks he can change the rules of the game.

In the road report the supervisors and contractor will watch for wash out areas to fill in before snow plows have to go out.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $25,752.59. After discussion Sup. Berscheit made a motion to transfer $10,000.00 from savings back to checking. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:35 p.m.

than unilateral action. Amending laws must undergo an entire legislative process. All of us have taken basic civics classes in school and we all know a president cannot unilaterally change the law. Our forefathers created a constitutional republic in America, and that must always be honored, cherished, and defended.

President Obama and Democrats have made a lot of promises they couldn’t keep. They promised lower

premiums, but premiums are increasing. They promised you can keep your doctor but we know that not to be true.

They promised you could keep your health insurance; millions of people are losing their health insurance entirely.

So, who is going to be blamed here?

At the end of the day, the blame must continue to rest on President Obama and Governor Dayton who forced Obamacare onto the American people.

Upsala Sr. High Student of the Month

McKenzie Barth has been named the October Student of the Month for Upsala High School. McKenzie is a sophomore at UAS and is the daughter of Karin Nelson and Jeff Barth.

McKenzie participates in Tennis, Dance, Track, FFA, Math League, Pep Band, and is a member of the UAS National Honor Society. McKenzie has received numerous honors in academics and extra-curricular activities, especially in FFA events at the State Level.

McKenzie is the Reporter for the UAS FFA Chapter, and is also a member of the Youth Chorale of Central Minnesota and an active participant in the Gethsemane Lutheran Church Youth Group.

McKenzie’s favorite class is Biology. She states, “Biology is very similar to what I’m interested in, and it’s fun with all the labs we do.” McKenzie feels the FFA is her most valuable activity because “…it has shown me that to

make an impact, you must be a leader.

I’ve really come out of my shell and met so many people in FFA and I’m most thankful for the opportunity.” In addition to her achievements in FFA, McKenzie has been recognized as a member of the UAS “A Honor Roll.”

McKenzie’s Agriculture/VoTech teacher and FFA advisor, Mrs. Gretchen Schleper states, “McKenzie Barth has shown a keen interest in her classes and takes her role as an FFA officer and leader very seriously. She approaches many things in her life by asking “what if” to explore all the opportunities. McKenzie’s character and integrity has enabled her to become very well rounded, but still excelling in everything she does.

Her drive and dedication often set the bar in her classes. McKenzie’s sense of humor and easy laugh make many a class brighter! Congratulations, McKenzie!”

Outside of school, McKenzie enjoys singing, reading, listening to music, and having fun with her friends. Her future plans are to attend college and then to begin her career. McKenzie’s advice to her classmates is “Don’t settle for ‘Okay’, do your best all the time and be proud of yourself.”

DNR reminder: ice is not safe right now

The Department of Natural Resources said the thin layers of ice that are forming on Minnesota waters right now are not safe. This reminder comes after a DNR conservation officer helped rescue a man Nov. 15 who was fishing and fell through the ice on Little Rock Lake in Benton County.

“The bottom line is it’s crucial that people do not let their guard down,” said Kara Owens, DNR boat and water safety specialist, “because ice is never 100 percent safe. A few days of cold temperatures don’t create ice strong enough to hold a person.”

Secure Parking

A cowboy from Texas walked into a bank in New York City and asked for the loan officer. He told the loan officer that he was going home to Texas for two weeks and needed to borrow $5,000 and that he was not a depositor of the bank.

The bank officer told him that the bank would need some form of security for the loan, so the cowboy handed over the keys to a brand new Ford F-250 King Ranch. The truck was parked on the street in front of the bank. The old cowboy produced the title and everything checked out.

The loan officer agreed to hold the car as collateral for the loan and apologized for having to charge 12% interest.

Later, the bank’s president and its officers all enjoyed a good laugh at the cowboy from the south for using a $85,000 pickup truck as collateral for a $5,000 loan. An employee of the bank then drove the truck into the bank’s private underground garage and safely parked it.

Two weeks later, the old cowboy returned, repaid the $5,000 and the interest of $23.07, and took the keys to his truck.

The loan officer said, “Sir, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out on Dunn & Bradstreet and found that you are a Distinguished Alumnus From Texas A&M, a highly-sophisticated investor and a multi-millionaire with real estate and financial interests all over the world.

What puzzles us is why would you bother to borrow $5,000?”

The good ‘ole Texan replied, “Where else in New York City can I park my truck for two weeks for only $23.07 and expect it to be there when I return?”
