Be accountable if you want to count -By Harvey Mackay

The recent political silly season is over – finally – and once again, I was listening for one particular word in the endless ads that peppered the airwaves: accountability.

It seems like the only time you hear that word is in the context of blaming one’s opponent for lack of it. I suspect that the reason so many of us grow so weary during political campaign season is that the finger-pointing is more prevalent than accepting responsibility for one’s actions. And the gridlock that ensues is always the other person’s fault. Can someone please make it all stop?

Businesses, on the other hand, can’t afford to shirk responsibility or accountability. Customers expect nothing less. Accountability must be a core value, never compromised, never up for discussion.

threshold for alibis and become better communicators and enforcers of what they want done,” writes Dave Anderson, author of “No-Nonsense Leadership.” “If you are more interested in being liked and popular than holding people accountable for results, you have a serious leadership weakness. It is not your job to make people happy.

Your job is to get them better. Holding people accountable to high standards and results is nothing to apologize for.

Failing to stretch them to their potential is.”

My friend Bob Dilenschneider, founder and principal of The Dilenschneider Group in New York, counsels corporations all over the world on planning and communications. In his recent “Red Book” paper on “Why Accountability Matters,” he suggests that rather than dwelling on culpability, focus instead on accountability in terms of taking responsibility for one’s actions.

“Accountability should be approached as a mindset – one that shapes our goals and the action you take to achieve those goals.”

To me, that means accountability is a good thing, not a negative. I want to own my decisions because I try to do the right thing even when it is not the easy

thing. I am willing to accept the blame when necessary as well as the credit when deserved for my actions.

“Responsibility equals accountability equals ownership. And a sense of ownership is the most powerful weapon a team or organization can have,” says Pat Summitt, former Tennessee women’s basketball coach. For the record, she holds the most all-time wins for a coach in NCAA basketball history of either a men’s or women’s team in any division.

Accountability starts at the top and needs to be clearly communicated in every facet of business. Employees need to share common goals with management, take ownership of projects, and work as a team to the best of their ability. Managers engender accountability with these steps: • Establish clear deadlines.

Reporting on progress must be a priority for management and employees alike.

Set specific timetables, schedules and dates for reports and completion.

• Deal with problems immediately.

Employees whose work does not meet requirements can destroy a project and ruin your relationship with customers and other employees. Find out what caused the problem: miscommunication on your part, lack of willingness or ability, unrealistic deadlines? Then do whatever you must to address the issue.

• Don’t tolerate excuses. An employee who always has an excuse will never take responsibility for his or her work. Your customer expects results, not excuses.

• Remove obstacles. If managers or employees can’t achieve desired results, look for the issue and correct it. There may be legitimate problems that are preventing progress. Computer glitches, overloaded schedules or slow delivery of materials are unexpected complications that you cannot afford to ignore.

• Delegate wisely.

Sharing ownership in a project lets your staff know that you trust them and that you are sharing responsibility as well. Coach those employees so they understand how their performance contributes to projects.

Obituaries Isabelle I. “Isey” Ostendorf Isabelle I. “Isey” Ostendorf, age 91 of Grey Eagle, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, November 14, 2014 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 22 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating.

Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Isabelle Irene Neuberger was born June 4, 1923 in Ellis, Kansas to John and Frances (Weber) Neuberger. On September 24, 1940 she was united in marriage to Edwin Ostendorf in Long

Prairie. The couple farmed west of Grey Eagle. They owned and operated the Rock Tavern in Grey Eagle from 1957 to 1973.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle and the Christian Mothers.

Survivors include her children, Gary (Sharon) Ostendorf of St. Joseph, Ron (Carol) Ostendorf of Brooklyn Park, Rick (Jan) Ostendorf of Alvarado, TX, Bob (Paula) Ostendorf of Sauk Centre, and Ken (Cindy) Ostendorf of Sauk Centre; 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Bob Neuberger of Yuma, AZ, Josey Slack of California, Ann Ellering of N St. Paul, and Joe Neuberger of Harris.

Isey was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Ostendorf on July 29, 1993; parents; great-grandchildren, Cody, Shawn, and Mark Ostendorf; brothers, Carl, Rudy, and John Neuberger; sisters, Bertha Grunke, Mary Clendenin, and Helen Schweigert.

Covenant Church in Upsala, MN. The new couple made their home in Minneapolis, MN and lived there for 26 years, attending First Evangelical Free Church in Minneapolis, MN. The couple then moved to Upsala in 1981, where she worked as the Upsala Community Covenant Church secretary.

The couple resided on their property until they moved into the town of Upsala in 2002.

Some of Peggylou’s hobbies and interests included reading, crocheting, baking, bird watching and participating in numerous activities at church.

She was united in marriage to the love of her life Gregory “Greg” Billig on November 1, 1979. She worked as an elementary school teacher for 35 years for the Little Falls School District at Dr. S.G. She was also a animal lover that cared so dearly for the many hunting dogs they had over the years always making sure they were well cared for and loved on everyday.

The Memorial Service took place at the Upsala Community Covenant Church on Wednesday, November 19 with Rev. Craig Johnson officiating. Burial took place at the Community Covenant Cemetery in Upsala, MN. Peggylou Miller was born on June 16, 1925 in Spokane, Washington to George and Mabel (Pederson) Miller. Help Not Wanted -By Sheila Ripplinger Have you ever wanted so badly to help someone that you see struggling and they make it blatantly clear that they do not want to be helped?

A toddler that is learning to do new things for example, makes a huge mess as they are learning to use a fork and a spoon. If you dare try to help them, they say in their unclear baby talk language, “I can do it myself!” Our help is not wanted, and we let them continue to make the mess, knowing it is the only way they will learn to master the task.

The same is true with learning how to walk. A little one has to experience many falls and bumps before they learn to walk steadily. Before we know it, they are running and even dancing!

How do we respond to those people whom we love, that are well beyond the toddler years, that we see making huge messes? They are hurting, discouraged, lonely and shamed, trying to walk steadily, but yet they keep falling down and getting bumps along the way. How do we help them when we see them stumbling toward danger?

We can let them know we are there for them, talk with them, listen, pray, cry with them, hold up really large warning signs for them to see... Well, okay, maybe holding up a sign is going a bit too far, but we sometimes tend to take desperate measures when we are trying to protect the people we love.

In dealing with a little child, we would never allow them to go out on thin ice. They may get upset with us because they do not understand, and that would be alright, since we know that we are protecting them from imminent danger.

However, when grown people we love and care about are running towards the dangerous thin ice of bad choices and do not want to listen to warnings, do not want help or to be stopped, we have to let them go. At that point, we stand at the shoreline and watch as they frantically endure the inevitable disaster and face the harsh consequences.

As much as we desire to run after them and try to stop them, we must let them go. If we do not, then we are at risk of going down with them in our emotions and our heartache. There is a fine line drawn between letting go and giving up. We should never give up, but hopefully by letting go, they will eventually learn to truly walk, and possibly even run and dance!

God Himself has taught us this principle of speaking truth in love and then letting go. He has sent many prophets over time to speak on His behalf the message of repentance and saving grace. God gives each one of us the free will to choose to believe in Him and follow Him, or choose to deny Him and mock Him. There is an unstable, wobbly fence in the middle where many choose to sit, but at some point that gets extremely uncomfortable and we must decide which side we are on.

The side of the world offers many elaborate pleasures, but ends in disaster and destruction when the fun is over.

The ‘other side’ is green pastures, valleys, mountains, and some narrow roads to travel, but has a never ending supply of life-giving grace. This side has no end. It leads to everlasting life in Heaven.

We all need help. We should never be too prideful to admit it! Pride comes before a fall. Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Psalm 79:9~ “Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your Name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your Name’s sake.”

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, My wife and I are 70, and we have $950,000 in annuities in the market, plus $68,000 in our emergency fund. The only debt we have is our mortgage.

I’m considering converting our stocks to a money market account to lower the risk. What do you think?

-Howard Dear Howard, There are two sides to this. One is the asset allocation method, where as you grow older you move away from equities like mutual funds toward safer, more conservative investments like money markets, bonds and certificates of deposit. This is standard financial planning theory.

I disagree with that theory, and here’s why. Statistics show that if you make it to 72 years of age and are in good health, you have a high probability of living into your nineties. If you’re making around one percent on your money market and inflation is four to five percent, then your money isn’t going to be worth a lot. You need to outpace inflation, at least with your investments, in order to break even.

You might move some cash over to money markets and CDs for your own peace of mind, but I’d also recommend growth and income mutual funds along with some balanced funds. You want the entire group to be hitting the four to five percent range over the next several years, so you can at least keep up with the rising costs of gas and bread.

In my mind, you’re avoiding one type of risk by moving everything to money markets, but you’re taking on a different kind of risk—the chance you’ll get tackled from behind by inflation. My advice is to balance things out so you can sleep better at night, but at a pace where you and your money stay ahead of the curve!

I know this is going to make the new year extra-special for you.

If I were in your situation, I’d write a check today and knock out that hospital bill. This definitely falls under the heading of “emergency” in my mind, so pay the bill and jump back into rebuilding your emergency fund.

You’ve done a good job of saving on $25,000 a year, but let’s look around and see what you can do about making more money, too. Additional classroom education or extra training in your field could increase your income pretty quickly. Your emergency fund probably needs to be a little bit bigger as well, and it’ll be a lot easier to make this happen if you’re bringing in more cash.

I’m sure you’re a hard-working guy, but the truth is it’s going to be pretty tough for even a small family to make it on what you’re bringing home now.

Life happens, and the unexpected can become a common occurrence when there’s a little one loose in the house!

Property dedication at Faith Community Upsala Sr. High Student of the Month Church in Burtrum Nov. 23rd

Rachel Prom has been named the Upsala Senior High School Student of the Month for October. Rachel is the daughter of DJ and Joanne Prom, and the sister of Collin.

Rachel is very involved in student activities at UHS as a member of Band, Choir, Drama, Knowledge Bowl, Math League and Student Council. Rachel has been a member of the “A” Honor Roll, and has also received academic recognition as Area Student of the Month numerous times. Rachel also serves as the President of her class.

In addition to her active involvement in school activities, Rachel is a member of the Albany Community Band and serves as the accompanist for the Upsala Upstage Players. Rachel also

volunteers at the Upsala Public Library, serves mass at St. Mary’s Church, and is involved in St. Mary’s as a musician.

Rachel’s favorite classes are Band and Choir because she enjoys making music. Rachel feels that English/Language Arts is her most valuable class because “learning how to communicate effectively is a skill I will use for the rest of my life.”

Ms. Jennifer Henry, Rachel’s English/Language Arts teacher states, “Rachel is a joy to have in class. She is not satisfied with the easy answer but instead takes time to reflect and contemplate. These qualities are evident in her outstanding marks and her ability to capture an audience with her writing. She is more than deserving of this honor!”

By Pastor Allen Travaille Recently acquired property by the Faith Community Church of Burtrum will be dedicated in special ceremonies on Sunday, November 23. The public is cordially invited to attend. The events will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the church sanctuary in a time of worship.

The service will continue with greetings from former pastors and local dignitaries. There will be a brief review of the history of the church and the events leading up to the land purchase.

Following the 10:00 service there will be an outdoor ceremony at the property site which is located immediately next to the present church building.

Following the ceremony guests and attendees are invited to a coffee fellowship in the church fellowship hall. The new property is anticipated for use for church expansion and parking.

The Faith Community Church had its beginnings when it was organized as The “Palmer Congregational Church” on February 10, 1891. It went by that name until 1957 when it became the “Evangelical Free Church.” Only shortly after that disaster struck and the church burned down on January 14, 1979. Later in the fall of that same year the congregation began to build a new church. When the entire building was completed, the church was dedicated as “Faith Community Church” on December 28, 1980.

Tanner is very active in school activities, participating in football grades seven through nine, basketball seventh and eighth grade and baseball since seventh grade, with plans to participate again this spring. He has been a student council member since eighth grade and has been in theatre since seventh grade. He is consistently on the honor roll.

A: Minnesota’s venison donation program, established by the state Legislature in 2007, allows hunters to donate legally-harvested deer to a participating meat processor. There is no cost to you (the hunter), and the processor is reimbursed for each deer they send to the food shelf. November is Peak Month for DeerVehicle Collisions time bedding sites and evening feeding Motorists should watch for deer this month as November is the peak time for deer-vehicle collisions in the state, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

One of the main reasons for the increase in crashes is that deer mating season occurs in November. A reduction in daylight hours and hunting season are other contributing factors.

Deer habitats are also disturbed during the fall harvest, causing deer to travel farther and in larger numbers than at any other time of the year.

From 2011 to 2013, there were 7,010 reported deer-vehicle crashes, according to the Department of Public Safety. There were 18 fatalities and 68 serious injuries. Of those injuries, 64 were motorcyclists. Two of the fatalities were in the 13-county Twin Cities Metro area, and the rest were in Greater Minnesota.

For those driving on Minnesota roadways, MnDOT offers these tips: • Be particularly alert in the fall and spring. More than half of the crashes happen in October and November when deer are mating, and in May and June during the birthing season.

• Be vigilant at dusk and at dawn.

A high percentage of crashes occur during the low-light or dark hours of the day when deer move between day-

areas.

• Slow down and scan the sides of the road and ditches for animals when driving through forested lands or near river and stream banks.

• Drive defensively and expect the unexpected. If you see a deer near the road, slow down because it might dart in front of you. And, if there is one deer, there may be more nearby.

• Seem like the right thing to do, swerving to avoid a deer could cause you to lose control or travel into the path of another vehicle. Striking a deer

Ice is forming on some lakes, rivers and ponds around Minnesota, but DNR conservation officers warn it is too early to venture out.

“The thin layers of ice forming on some Minnesota waters right now are not safe,” said Maj. Greg Salo, operations manager, DNR Enforcement Division. “A few days of cold temperatures don’t create ice strong enough to hold a person.”

According to Salo, three people died last winter after falling through the ice.

Why did Jesus choose twelve disciples? Was there some significance in that number? Could it have been because there were twelve months in the Jewish calendar, or because they divided their day into twelve hours or because there were twelve tribes of Israel?

We find the answer in Mark’s gospel: “that they might be with Him!” Jesus wanted His “friends” to be with Him and learn from Him. Psalm 24:14 says, “The Lord is a friend to those who fear Him. He teaches them His covenant” His plan of salvation.

Someone once said, “A friend is a person who knows you and likes to be with you in spite of your faults.” This seems to go beyond “love.” Love is “doing” something for someone because they have a need.

It is a gracious thought to know that He wants us to be His “friends.” The picture represented in this verse is that of two friends sitting on a couch having a confidential conversation. What a wonderful way to think of our relationship with Jesus: sitting next to Him and quietly talking to Him about eternal life - His covenant with His people - His friends!

How amazing it is to think that we can share thoughts with Him as a friend.

What an opportunity He offers us: to sit with Him as a friend and ask Him to teach us His covenant - His plan for our salvation.

We can do this - be with Him - by reading His Word and talking with Him in prayer and meditation.

Local Municipality Minutes Swanville City October 7, 2014 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, October 7, 2014. The meeting called to order 7:30 p.m., with the following members present: Sandy Peterson, Jay Bartkowicz, and Jim Molitor. Also present: Brenda Schmidt, Gene Epling, Mark Hallen, Lonny Hutchins and reporter Kerry Drager.

Mayor Peterson announced there will be a closed meeting after this council meeting to discuss a personnel issue.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held Tuesday, September 2, 2014 were read. A motion was made by Jim Molitor to approve the minutes as read. Jay Bartkowicz seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given.

A motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by Jay Bartkowicz to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mark Hallen. City Engineer, stated to the council that there would be an additional $65,000.00 that the city could borrow to be used for the extra projects that were done in 2014. Mayor Peterson made a motion to borrow the additional money at the low interest rate to compensate the additional projects that were done this year. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Hallen will get the necessary paper work completed. The punch list is now completed. The clerk will forward the invoices to Hallen for work the city had done and paid for, which will be deducted from the retainage money to Larson Construction. The final payment will presented at the November meeting for the Rhoda Avenue project. Brenda Schmidt was present to thank the council for getting the boulevard work on Rhoda Avenue finished and looking very nice.

Mayor Peterson stated that October 9, 2014 is proclaimed as Senior Citizen Day in Swanville.

The seniors will be enjoying a free

meal donated by many Swanville businesses and the Swanville Lions Club served at Uncle B’s Café.

City maintenance man reported he had gone to the City of Bertha and bought a number of parts that will be used at the sewer plant.

The 2014 budget was discussed and Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the 2014 budget as presented. Jay Bartkowicz seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Putting in a sand point on a resident property was discussed.

The Mayor will check with the MN Department of Health and Morrison County to find out regulations.

There is repair work that needs to be done on the sidewalk on Third Street between DeGraff and Berkey Avenue. Council stated that the repair work would be up to the property owner.

Jim and Diane Loven would like to add on to their existing shed an 18’x40’addition. P&Z have approved this addition. After discus-

sion, Mayor Peterson made a motion to approve the addition. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Peterson proclaimed the month of October as National Domestic Violence Awareness month in Swanville.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Jay Bartkowicz made a motion to approve the claims. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Because of the general election, the next monthly meeting will be held Thursday, November 6, 2014 at 6:00 p.m.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Jay Bartkowicz and seconded by Jim Molitor to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Minnesota’s Snowmobile Trails Open December 1st Despite the recent snowfall throughout much of Minnesota, snowmobile trails are not yet ready for riding, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Minnesota’s snowmobile trails officially open Dec. 1; however, several conditions must be met before trails open and are ready for travel: • Ground must be frozen allowing for crossings in wet areas.

• Trails must have adequate snow cover, about 12 inches, on the ground to allow for trail packing and grooming.

• Landowner permits that allow trails on private land must be in place.

• Trails must be cleared of dead fall, signs need to be in place and gates need to be opened.

Early season trails may have fallen trees or other debris across the trails, unfrozen areas, rocks or ruts, or standing crops and closed gates.

The first Saturday of each month, Ruby’s Pantry food distribution is open for business at the River of Life Church in Sauk Centre from 10-11:30 a.m. This is not a hand out program and is open to all people in the area, not just Sauk Centre. There are no requirements to participate. Each participant is asked to donate $20 to offset the costs and in exchange they will leave with an abundance of groceries.

When you arrive at a distribution for the first time you will need to register and then sign in. This is a simple registration that requires no documentation. After the first time you will only need to sign in. You will receive a number.

When your number is called, you will go through a line where the food is. Although you aren’t required to

take anything that you do not want, you are encouraged to take it and share with your family members, neighbors and friends.

Kresha Encourages Applications for High School Page Program Ruby’s Pantry is a Hand Up Program Rep. Ron Kresha, R-Little Falls, is encouraging area high school students to consider submitting an application for the High School Page Program. The program, which was created in 1975, is one of only three programs of its kind in the United States that gives high school students an up-close look at the day-to-day workings of the Minnesota Legislature.

“High school students have a unique opportunity to see how our state government works up-close through the High School Page Program,” Kresha said. “I hope high school juniors will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to experience what things are like at the legislature.”

Eleven CentraCare primary care clinic sites recently received health care home (HCH) re-certification from the Minnesota Department of Health through November 2015.

The HCH-certified clinics include six CentraCare Clinic sites in St. Cloud (Pediatric & Adolescent Health, Northway Family Medicine, Health Plaza Family Medicine, River Campus Internal Medicine, Plaza Internal Medicine and CentraCare Family Health Center) as well as clinic sites in Becker, St. Joseph, Sauk Centre, Long Prairie and Melrose.

As of Oct. 1, these 11 sites have enrolled more than 1,800 patients in a health care home.

Patients a health care home are assigned a care coordinator to help navigate the health system, coordinate care with specialists and connect them with vital community services. Care providers, families and patients work together to improve health outcomes and quality of life for individuals with complex or chronic health conditions and disabilities. There are 24 care coordinators at these clinic sites.

The development of health care homes in Minnesota is part of the groundbreaking health reform legislation passed in May 2008. The legislation includes payment to primary care providers for partnering with patients and families to provide coordination of care.

To be certified as a health care home, providers and clinics must meet a rigorous set of standards that were developed through a public-private stakeholder process, and complete an application and participate in a site visit. Certification represents a transformation of care delivery that can benefit all patients who receive their care in a health care home.

Patient feedback also is an important part of the certification process and one couple commented, “We love working with Health Care Home. We feel like we are a part of a team in managing our health needs and concerns and we thank all who have made this possible.”
