Innovation requires creative space -By Harvey Mackay Seymour Cray, the founder of Cray Research and legendary free spirit in the management c o m m u n i t y, was once asked – according to a Wall Street Journal story – to produce a oneyear and a fiveyear plan.

The next day, he produced two threering binders, each containing a single sheet of paper. In the first binder, Cray had written, “Five-Year Plan: To produce the world’s fastest computers.”

That probably wouldn’t pass muster at most organizations; it might in fact be considered insubordinate. Or was it just an example of his innovative nature?

Innovation is one of the buzzwords of the decade for business. Innovation is crucial to an organization’s long-term success. An article in Forbes Magazine said CEOs believe innovation is the most important factor for growth.

A mission statement is important, but it is just a first step. The goals of the organization should constantly be reinforced with an eye toward innovative processes that will help achieve those goals.

If you want more imagination and innovation in your workplace, you have to give people space: physical space in which to work uninterrupted, and creative space to develop and test ideas without interference.

The best way to motivate employees to become more creative and innovative is by developing job descriptions that focus on what they can do instead of what they cannot. Set clear expectations for innovation. Talk about the kind of ideas you want to see, and what you don’t.

Clarify deadlines and requirements for everyone.

Stretch people’s skills and imagination by challenging them to excel. Give them a jolt from time to time – a tough problem or a tight deadline that forces them to think differently.

Allow people to take chances and fail. That doesn’t mean being reckless, but being willing to try something new, even if it’s not guaranteed to succeed.

Bring a wide mixture of personalities and skills to your team. The more exposure to new ways of thinking people have, the better their ideas will be.

A high-performing team thrives on creativity and innovation. If the status quo is a default position, or if it’s just easier to rely on what’s worked in the past, chances are the results will not reflect anything close to innovation. If you aren’t asking these questions, you could be missing golden opportunities.

• How do you define innovation?

You don’t want to be too open-ended, but at the same time you should avoid unnecessarily limiting the scope of ideas.

Just be sure that innovation has a clear, positive effect on how to get things done.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Farming in Germany My great grandfather lived and farmed in Germany. Farms were smaller than the farms in this area. Much of the work was done by hand and every bushel was very important to the financial well-being of the family. Great grandfather had a running feud with his neighbor on the next farm. They really didn’t like each other.

I was told two stories regarding their disagreements. The first involved the shocks of grain in their fields. Great grandfather noticed that the number of shocks in his field seemed to be getting fewer and the neighbor’s shocks appeared to be increasing. One night he and his oldest son, Hugo, hid behind some shocks and noticed that there was a strange thing happening. Some shocks were mysteriously moving from their field, over the fence and stopping in the neighbors field. The authorities were contacted and the judge ruled that since the fields were of equal size, when thrashing was done, the crop must be divided in two. Half of the crop going to each farmer. Not necessarily a

happy ending, but it kept peace on the community for a while.

The second story involves the neighborhood town oven. There was a clay oven in the middle of town. It was used by the town ladies to bake their bread each morning. They all took their turn at the oven, which became a gathering place for the ladies.

Grandfather noticed that the rail fence around the farm was disappearing. It started in one corner and was slowly moving along the fence. He was certain the neighbor was involved, so he got an idea that would fix him. He went out one night and brought the next four rails into the shop. He then bored a hole in the middle of the end in the rails and filled them with gun powder and plugged up the ends. They were then placed back in the fence. A couple of days later the town oven blew up. Great grandfather now knew where his fence was going.

The local law visited with him, but they were unable to charge him with a crime, since the rails were stolen.

I’m certain that there are lots of stories like these, but they were never written, so they died along with the people involved.

know what you’re looking for. You want to launch a brand-new product every year, for example.

• How do you measure success? If you can’t track the impact of innovation, no one will take it seriously. Maybe you want 10 percent of your revenues to come from products that are less than five years old. Or maybe you want to cut your energy bill by 20 percent in the next six months.

• How do you encourage innovation?

Analyze your process for generating, testing and implementing new ideas.

What obstacles does your team face?

How could you streamline things?

• Do you have a pipeline? Ideally, innovation should happen all the time.

Your team should have new ideas coming in and being tested on a constant basis. If that’s not happening, dig deep to determine what you can do to spur more creativity.

• Do you have an end game? You can debate, test and adjust your ideas, but your team needs to be able to commit to a specific direction or conclusion.

Determine how you will decide which projects to support and when enough is enough. You have to know when to leave the experimental phase or you’ll never get the results your organization needs.

Obituaries Roger A. Gates

Roger A. Gates, age 74 passed away suddenly on October 19, 2018 in Green Valley, AZ, formerly of Burtrum, MN. A Celebration of Roger’s Life service will be at Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Prairie, Minnesota on November 2, 2018 at 11:00 a.m.

Visitation prior to the service at 10:00 at Trinity Lutheran.

Roger was born April 22, 1944 in Minneapolis to the late Raymond and Delores Gates.

Roger started his professional career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He then transitioned to the Minneapolis Police Department where he served for 21 years.

During this time he also served for 9 years in the U.S. Army Reserve, where he reached the position of First Sergeant. In 1975 he was Honorably Discharged from the U.S. Army.

Roger was united in marriage to Linda (Kuehne) on June 2, 1979 in Grey Eagle, MN and made Central MN their home where they had 3 children; Kristin, Laura

Roger retired from the Minneapolis Police Department in 1987. Roger and Linda then purchased the Hub Supper Club on Long Lake in Burtrum, Minnesota where they owned and operated the business for 9 years. Roger later decided to return to Law Enforcement with the Todd County Sheriff’s Department part time working Water Patrol and in 1995 he was appointed the fulltime role as Under Sheriff where he served for 2 years. Following this term he continued as a Deputy for 6 years and later worked part time as Court Room Security. He then retired from Law Enforcement for the second time of his career, with the Todd County Sheriff’s Office in 2014.

He received many Military and Law Enforcement expert marksmanship awards and commendations during his time in the U.S. Army Reserve and within his Law Enforcement career.

Roger loved being a husband, father, grandfather and being with his family.

He had a passion for hunting, fishing, and golfing, spending time with his many friends and walking his dog Pierce.

Roger is survived by his wife, Linda of 39 years; daughters, Kristin Gates-Johnson, Laura Gates (Tyler Rudy) and son, Daniel (Kristin) Gates; brother, Raymond (Jeanne) Gates of Eagan, Minnesota; grandchildren, Devon, Peyton, Kailee, Avery (Kristin); Cole, Addison, Finley, Nolan and another granddaughter arriving in December (Laura); Lauren, Hattie and Ava (Daniel); as well as many nephews and nieces.

A devoted and generous member of his community, Joe was proud to be a long-time member of the Swanville Lion’s Club. He maintained perfect attendance from 1964 to 1989 and looked forward to his shifts cooking BBQ chicken at their annual MidSummer Carnival. He was also an active member of the Swanville Volunteer Fire Department, serving from 1962 to 1990.

Joe married Lori Clemens on March 8, 2014. They moved to Milaca, where he enjoyed working outdoors in the garden and helping out neighbors with mechanical repairs. Joe and Lori often joined friends in Little Falls for Texas Hold ‘Em tourneys.

Joe and Lori moved to Little Falls in July 2018.

Joe is survived by his wife, Lori; daughters, June (Mike) Weeks; Becky (Scott) Hillig; Sharon (Jeff) Almeida; son, Joe Koenig, Jr.; grandchildren, Nikolas (Dallas) Weeks, Luke Weeks, Paige (Nathan) Engels, Kate (Kyle) Bodle; and four great grandchildren; sister, Mary Madden; stepdaughter, Jessica (Chad) Miller; stepgrandsons, Wyatt and Colton; as well as many nieces, nephews, close relatives, and beloved friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Diane (2012); parents, Charles (1972) and Bessie (2000); siblings, Darvin (2018), Jeanette (2010), Betty Lou (1932); and infant sons Joseph Alan (1962) and John Joseph (1964).

A celebration of Joe’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 9, 2018 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 208 Broadway West, Little Falls, MN. Visitation will be held one hour before the service.

Friends may call at the church from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, November 8, with parish prayers and a time of remembrance at 7 p.m. His family invites you to join them for fellowship at Our Lady of Lourdes following the Friday morning service.

Joe’s final resting place will be at Springbrook Cemetery in Swanville, MN. A private interment will be held at a later date.

J o s e p h Andrew Koenig, Sr., 77, former resident of Swanville, passed away peacefully at his home in Little Falls on Thursday, October 18, 2018. Joe will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Joe was born on February 22, 1941 in Swanville, MN to Charles and Bessie Koenig. He attended Swanville High School and graduated in 1959.

On August 20, 1960, Joe was united in marriage to Diane Newman at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville.

Back when they were first dating, Joe and Diane loved to frequent local ballrooms with their friends and would later revisit those fond memories when taking ballroom dancing lessons. Their children were always delighted when “The Man in Black” and “The Lady in Red” joined them on the dance floor and shared their fancy footwork.

In August 2010, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Joe’s early years were spent learning mechanical skills from his father and then refining those skills on various bikes, cars, and snowmobiles. “Pinky”, as he was known to his friends, loved racing stock cars and snowmobiles, accumulating many wins and trophies over the years. Joe raced ThunderJet snowmobiles in the early 70’s and was very proud to be sponsored by Alexandria Boat Works and Hammerbeck’s.

Known for his friendly smile and willingness to help others, Joe was trusted as an expert mechanic by generations of families in Central Minnesota. While still in school, he began his career as an auto mechanic at Loven’s Service and was employed there for 17 years. Like his father, Charlie, Joe loved his work as a mechanic and enjoyed passing his knowledge and work ethic down to his children. In October 1974, Joe and Diane purchased the Conoco service station in Swanville. They expanded the building twice and then added on a convenience store in 1991. When they retired in September 2004, Joe and Diane had worked together there for almost 30

Gerald “Bud” Rohde

F u n e r a l services for Gerald “Bud” Rohde, 86 of Burtrum, who died suddenly on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 was held Monday, October 29 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle.

Pastor Michael Bitz officiated and burial will take place, on a later date, at Lakeview Cemetery in Grey Eagle. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Williams Dingmann Stein Chapel in Long Prairie.

Bud was born July 31, 1932 in Grey Eagle Township to Edward and Vivian (Walker) Rohde. He married Luetta Canfield on November 16, 1957 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle. Bud worked for Butler Brothers in Nashwauk for over 31 years and after retirement returned to the Burtrum area and worked at the

Linda L. Raeker, age 60 of New Munich, died peacefully, surrounded by her family after a year long battle with cancer on Friday, October 26, 2018 at Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, November 3 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Eberhard Schefers officiating.

Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Linda Louise Balster was born July 27, 1958 in Worthington, Minnesota to Bernard and Elizabeth (Burkard) Balster. She was united in marriage to Richard Raeker on December 20, 2003 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. Linda was a professional alteration

Bud is survived by his beloved wife Luetta of 61 years, his children, Jeannie Thompson of Burtrum; Cindy (Ronald) Bruggenthies of Burtrum; Wayne Rohde of Burtrum; Shelly (Ernest) Henderson of Minneapolis; Kevin “Buddha” Rohde of Burtrum; daughter-in-law, Sharon Rohde Grey Eagle; siblings, June (Frank) Waldvogel, Harold (Pat) Rohde, Linda Rohde, 16 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Sharon who died in infancy, his son, David Rohde, siblings, Lorraine Denne, Vera Denne, Virginia Denne, David Rohde, Glen Rohde, Laverna Rohde, infant brothers, Frederick, James and Myron.

Linda was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Raeker on April 17, 2010; son, Jason O’Malley in 2009; parents; brother, Leon Balster; and sister, Shirley Balster.

Urn bearers will be Ruben and Cindy Bertram.

Memorials are preferred.

Walter F. Broermann

Walter F. Broermann, age 91 of Sauk Centre, formerly of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Sunday, October 28, 2018 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, October 31 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Walter Frank Broermann was born June 3, 1927 in Jackson, Minnesota to Frank and Agnes (Kruhl) Putze. After his birth father passed away when Walter was 2 years old, Agnes later remarried Joseph Broermann.

The family moved to Melrose where Walter went to country school through the eighth grade. He worked on the family farm north of Melrose until he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Korea from 1950 through 1952.

On April 30, 1953 he was united in marriage to Alice Wiener at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. The couple lived on the family farm where they raised their family.

Survivors include his children, Catherine (Michael) Strutz of Willmar, John (Donna) Broermann of Sauk Centre, Lawrence “Larry” (Carol) Broermann of Blaine, Theresa (Donald) Meyer of Melrose, Edward Broermann, Lynn (Lee) Ortloff of Arlington, and Arthur (Kori) Broermann of Melrose; 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and special friend, Alice Boeckermann.

Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Broermann on February 14, 1999; parents; son, Michael Broermann; and brother, Alfred “Fritz” Broermann.

Serving as casket bearers were Jeremy Borgmann, Jason Broermann, Sara Strutz, Ashley Grahn, Mindy Bauer, and Adam Strutz. Cross bearer was Sawyer Broermann and scripture bearer was Alicia Ortloff.

Honorary bearers were Daniel Borgmann, Nicholas Borgmann, Stacy Little, and Chris Broermann and readers were Ryan Borgmann and Shane Broermann.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I borrowed some money from my parents in January, and it took a few months longer to pay them back than originally planned. Since then, I’ve noticed our relationship seems to be strained. They will sometimes make remarks about money when I’m around, and it’s obvious the things they say are aimed at me. I don’t want things to be like this between us during the holidays. I have taken steps to become more financially responsible, like watching my spending and living on a budget, so how can I address this issue with them?

-Robbie Dear Robbie, I’m sorry you’re going through this, but I hope everyone has learned a valuable lesson. It’s okay to give money sometimes, as long as you’re not enabling irresponsible behavior in the process. But loaning money to or borrowing from friends and relatives will often lead to bruised feelings.

If you paid them back, especially if

it took longer than expected or agreed upon, there’s not much you can do if they choose to hold a grudge. With some folks, it just takes a little while for those kinds of things to heal. And considering it’s your parents, my guess is they’ll become more and more forgiving with time.

Until then, maybe you could look for opportunities during conversations with them to mention your new approach to finances. Something as simple as referring your budget, or getting excited about how much you were able to put into savings from your last paycheck, might get their attention. A few subtle hints that you’re actively working to gain control of your finances might go a long way with your parents.

If they realize you’re starting to handle your money more wisely, I’ll bet you’d start to notice a real difference in their attitudes!

U of M Extension to Host Land Rent and Crop/Weed Management Workshop What is a fair & profitable farmland rental agreement? Landlords, farmers, and agribusiness professionals should make plans to attend the land rent and weed management workshop being held on Tuesday, November 13th from 9:3011:30 a.m. at the Long Prairie City Hall (615 Lake St. S). This meeting is free to attend and offered by the University of Minnesota Extension.

Farmer profits are low or negative and farmland rental rates have declined slightly while commodity prices have decreased significantly. Negotiating a fair and profitable farm rental agreement that satisfies both the landowner and the farmer is a big challenge in today’s economy.

Nathan Hulinsky, Extension Educator in Ag Business Management, will provide examples, factsheets and worksheets to determine a fair farmland rental rate for both parties. Topics covered during the land rent portion of the workshop will include: local historic and projected farmland rental rate trends, current farm land values and sales, and a worksheet that will help determine a fair rental agreement. Input costs for 2019 will be presented along with current 2019 corn and soybean prices. Worksheets will examine 2019 costs and what is affordable rent that a farmer will be able to pay in 2019 and the rate of return

to the landlord at current market values.

Flexible rental agreements will also be examined. (9:30-10:45a.m.)

Nathan Drewitz, Extension Educator in Agriculture Production Systems-Crops, will be sharing strategies on weed management, weed plant and seed identification, cropping strategies for weed control, and having a discussion on best management practices for different types of weeds found in this area’s cropland. There are many who argue for or against the existence of God. The Bible, however, does not. It simply states that “God is.” In Psalm 102:25 we read, “In the beginning You laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands.” This obviously means that God “was” before anything existed and that the heavens and earth are the work of His hands. Creation is finite and transitory but our God is not.

As Peter reminds us “in keeping with His promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.”

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2011 Honda Civic and it specifies that I use a fully synthetic oil of very low weight. I have never seen oil with this low of a weight rating so I worry about protection and it’s also very expensive as compared to regular conventional oil. My question is this, can I use conventional oil and go with a heavier weigh like a 5w30 and get the same protection at a lower cost? I want to protect my engine but also be as economical as possible.

-Brad in Williamsport, Pennsylvania Dear Brad, No, that’s about as easy as I can put it. The manufactures have gone to lower weight oil to increase fuel mileage through less drag and also reduce emissions due to stricter government standards and a demand for better fuel economy. When they changed to the lower weight oil they also engineered the engine to run with it. This means that the engine will not lubricate properly with heavier weight oil.

As for the synthetic part there are many reasons that it is required, some of which are reduced friction for the mileage and emissions, better stability to protect at the lower weight ratings, and less sludge buildup in the engine. If you were to switch to higher weight oil or use nonsynthetic oil you could risk damage to the engine that would not be covered by the warrantee. Always use the manufactures recommended oils in your engine.

towards just plain broken. I have not had to do much more than general maintenance to the car, oil, coolant, transmission fluid changes and tires are about it. In the last six months it’s been bigger things like starters, alternators and wiper motors. I’m beginning to wonder where it will all stop.

The latest failing item that has me writing to you because I can’t duplicate it for my local shop is smoke that comes from my steering column by the steering wheel. It has happened three times at random. I am worried that the car may catch fire. Do you have any ideas or should I just sell it?

It sounds like you are just in a spell of breakdowns that hopefully will pass. As for the smoke I suspect that you have and issue with the turn signal switch. This was a common area for a breakdown of the contacts that causes a hotter than normal condition resulting in the grease that coats the contacts smoking. I have never seen one catch fire but you need to have it and the wiring checked right away. I hope this helps you out.

Jean Marie Jurek

Jean Marie Jurek, 57, of Willmar, died Sunday, October 28, 2018, at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Her Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 am, Friday, November 2nd at Church of St. Mary in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 pm, Thursday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and on Friday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Jean was born February 3, 1961, in Hammond, Indiana, the daughter of Roy and Betty (Peterson) Sharp. After moving to Minnesota, Jean attended school and graduated from Grey Eagle High School and

following high school she lived in St. Cloud.

On January 15, 2000, she was united in marriage to Paul Jurek in Pipestone. They lived in Balaton until moving to Willmar in 2003. She most recently worked for Divine House and was currently working at Safe Avenues as a shelter advocate.

Some of Jean’s favorite past times along with playing games and doing word puzzles were fishing, camping, traveling baking, canning and watching soap operas. More than anything, Jean cherished every time she could attend Donald’s baseball, basketball and football games as well as watching the Vikings and Timberwolves.

Surviving are her husband, Paul; son, Donald and siblings: Sherry (and Glen) Hiltunen of Sauk Centre, Cindy (and Jim) Schwalbe of St. Cloud and Bonnie (and Bob) Arnzen of Freeport and beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Donald Sharp and sister, Kay Wolbeck.

Raymond “Ray” Mayers Raymond H. “Ray” Mayers, age 89 of New Munich, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, October 26, 2018 at CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, October 30 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Raymond Henry Mayers was born August 21, 1929 in St. Martin Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Herman and Anna (Moser) Mayers. He was born and raised on the Mayers’ family farm. Ray married Alda Mae Gilk on September 11, 1951 and they settled on the family farm until their retirement in 1989.

They moved into town, but Ray continued to always help on the farm. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and going to the casino. His last few years, he enjoyed socializing with others and sharing his stories. Ray loved to spend time with his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. They were his pride and joy.

Ray was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich his entire life. He was also a member of the St. Joseph’s Men’s Society, Knights of Columbus Father Pierz Council #3628, St. Leo Court 786 Catholic Order of Foresters, and the New Munich Lions Club, receiving the Melvin Jones Award.

Survivors include his children, David (Shirley) Mayers of Swanville, Mary Jane (Stan) Kortenbusch of Albany, Alice

(Dennis) Groetsch of Alexandria, Ruth (Tom) Boeckermann of Lakeville, and Tim (Lori) Mayers of Freeport; 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; brother, Sylvester Mayers of South St. Paul; brother-in-law, Norb Humbert of Melrose; and sister-in-law, Jeanette Mayers of Melrose.

Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Alda Mae Mayers on March 4, 2013; parents, Herman and Anna Mayers; brothers and sisters, Ervin Mayers, Luella Humbert, Viola Scholz, Donald Mayers, and infant sister, Loretta Mayers; and an infant great-grandson, Joseph Mayers.

Serving as casket bearers were Thomas Boeckermann, Corey Groetsch, Kurt Mayers, Benjamin Mayers, Kim Poitra, and Shanelle Mayers. Cross bearer was Keith Kortenbusch and scripture bearer was Crystle Illa. Readers were Amy Hendricks and Tina Streit. Gift bearers were Ashley Lieser and Mike Kortenbusch. Eulogy was read by Joel Mayers.

Hazel was born February 15, 1931 in Long Prairie to George & Marjorie (Lind) Peterson Jr. She married Eugene H. Scheve

He married Jane Drong on October 22, 1960 at Zion United Church of Christ in Long Prairie. Bob has lived in the Long Prairie area his entire life. He farmed on the family farm and began working as a carpenter for Hart’s Press which later became Banta. He was a jack-of-all trades and could pretty much fix anything. He loved spending time deer hunting, fishing, and camping. He was a great story teller.

Survivors include his wife Jane, son Danny, grandchildren, Mathew and Krystal Lunser, great grandchildren, Parrish and Amity, and brother, Edwin Lunser.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brothers, Roselyn Eckel, Rueben, and Arthur Lunser.

She enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking, baking and watching the Minnesota Vikings.

Hazel was very active in the church and was active in the lady’s guild and quilters group.

The church was a major part of her life. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, Tim (Terri) of Long Prairie; sister and brothers, Mert Starry-Nelson, Marvin, Gerald and Elwin Peterson, 4 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband in 2011, daughter Karen, sisters Shirley Carsten, and Betty Hengelmuhle.

Rose worked at the Melrose Hospital until her retirement in 1992.

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz Mark: You Lack One Thing If you could ask Jesus one question what would it be? Would it be about life, would it be about how the world works, or would it be something about religion?

Would you ask about Powerball numbers, stock forecasts, or an event we can alter and save the world or even our own life?

What must I do to inherit eternal life?

This is the young man’s one question to Jesus whom he called Good. He knew Jesus was special, sent by God. He wasn’t worried about wealth -- he had that. He was concerned about the afterlife. Many of us are. Much of the world around us is concerned about eternity because deep down inside we know there is more to this existence than to live and then die.

The rich young man wants to know, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?”

“You lack one thing,” Jesus says. Even today material success breeds a certain “can do” attitude. You do one thing and it works so you do it again and again.

In the spiritual realm the “can do” question becomes, “What must I do to inherit eternal life.” Too bad that this is the wrong question. Every straight answer you can give to this question will only reinforce the sinful understanding that we have control over our eternal destiny. Sell everything you have, give it to

the poor and follow me. This was Jesus’ answer. The wealthier you are the harder this is. This young man in our reading finds this to be an impossible task. But would selling everything you have and following Jesus guarantee you eternal life even today?

The danger of this earthly “can do” attitude is that religion and even faith can be turned into something we do. By following Jesus we learn how we inherit eternal life and we learn that eternal life is something Jesus earns for us. “You lack one thing,” the forgiveness of sins found only through faith in Jesus. What must I do to be forgiven? Wrong question, you don’t work for that either. Follow Jesus and he will show you how. Follow Jesus and you just might learn about God’s grace for you. Follow Jesus and you will learn about divine forgiveness and that is how you inherit eternal life.

Following Jesus is the single most challenging task a fallen sinner like us can attempt. For it is a task that calls us to leave earthly wealth and earthly ways behind. It is a path that leads us away from thinking that there is something we can do to make life better or that leads us to eternal life. Following Jesus means taking the opportunities we have to attend worship, to read God’s Word, to do good deeds, to live out forgiveness, to obey God’s commands and these are not easy tasks nor do they earn us eternal life. Jesus is the only way the truth and the life, no one gets to the father except through him. So what must I do to inherit eternal life and keep all my selfish ambitions?

Wrong question. Amen.

October 16, 2018: At 19:47 received a report of a car deer crash on 130th St. near the County 33 intersection, Grey Eagle. It was reported that Dylan Hollermann, age 18, of Burtrum was traveling westbound on 130th St. in his 2006 black Ford F150 when he struck a deer that entered the roadway causing damage. There were no injuries reported with this crash and Hollermann was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the incident.

October 20, 2018: At 16:46 a one vehicle roll over on County Road 11 in Section 29 of Kandota township. John Pigman, age 51 of Fort Meyers, FL; was traveling southbound in a 2003 Buick Century when he lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle left the road way and rolled over landing on its wheels. Pigman was wearing his seatbelt and did not sustain any injuries. Pigman’s vehicle was towed from the scene. The Todd County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Minnesota State Patrol and by a Minnesota State Conservation Officer.

October 20, 2018: At 21:08 a one vehicle roll over on County Road 65 in Section 1 of Leslie Township. Jeffery Kasper, age 46 of rural Long Prairie; was traveling northbound in a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am when the vehicle malfunctioned and he lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle left

the road way and rolled over. Kasper along with his 3 children who were in the vehicle did not sustain any injuries. Kasper’s vehicle was towed from the scene.

October 21, 2018: At 11:48 Victoria Hayes, of rural Swanville, called the Sheriff’s Office to report that her mailbox had been damaged and knocked off the post. Deputies observed tire tracks near the mailbox. Deputies patrolled the surrounding area, but did not locate any other damaged mailboxes. At this time, it is believed that this incident was accidental, with no foul play suspected.

October 24, 2018: At 22:31 responded to County 2 near County 98 in Grey Eagle for a car vs deer. Miguel Abonce’s blazer collided with a deer causing minor front end damage. No injuries occurred during the collision. A permit was issued for the deer.

October 29, 2018: At 15:23 a two vehicle accident on Boxelder Trail in section 8 of Grey Eagle Township. Mackenzie Wolbek was traveling westbound in her 2010 Chevrolet Impala and Agnus Randt was traveling eastbound in her 2006 Ford 500 when the two vehicles collided, both vehicles were damaged. The vehicles were both removed from the scene by their owners. There were no injuries to either party.

Deer season opens this weekend Minnesota’s firearms deer season begins a half-hour before sunrise on Saturday, Nov. 3, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources expects half a million hunters to participate.

Some points to remember: Hunters will have additional deer hunting opportunities because deer numbers continue to rebound across the state.

Many areas now have populations at or above goal levels.

Hunters should follow the three tenets of safe firearms handling: treat each firearm as if it is loaded by keeping finger off the trigger; always control the muzzle of the firearm; and be sure of target and what is beyond. Tree stand accidents are the leading cause of injury to hunters, so it’s always important they wear a safety harness and follow other safety guidelines.
