Honesty, integrity, values – not optional -By Harvey Mackay A dejected father confided in his pastor with a problem: his youngster had been caught cheating on a test at school.

He was crushed, feeling like he had failed as a father, concerned it would saddle the child with a reputation for dishonesty.

“The worst thing that can happen to a youngster starting school,” said the father, “is to get caught cheating.”

“Not at all,” said the clergyman, “the worst thing at the start of a person’s life is to cheat and NOT get caught.”

What is a good parent’s main job?

The days of simply supporting the family financially may be over, according to a Pew Research Center report. Asked what’s “extremely important” for a father to provide, a telephone survey of 1,004 American adults got these findings: • Values and morals: 58 percent • Emotional support: 52 percent • Discipline: 47 percent • Income: 41 percent The results follow a similar trend for mothers, with “values and morals” at the top and “income” coming in last.

Every time dishonesty wins, it gets harder to convince our children that honesty is the best policy. Complete honesty in little things is not a little thing at all.

Honesty, ethics, integrity, values, morals – all mean the same thing. In my estimation, you can interchange them, because they all convey the single attribute that determines whether a person or an organization can be trusted.

On the heels of recurrent tales of corruption in most every aspect of modern life, it is a commonly accepted fact that ethics are what each of us thinks other people should apply. The challenge we all face is that we cannot fudge on our own set of ethics and values, even when it is extremely tempting. That is the kiss of death.

Peter Drucker, the late management guru, once said, “There is no such thing as business ethics – there is only ethics.”

My good friend, world-renowned leadership guru John Maxwell makes the same point in his book “There’s No Such Thing As Business Ethics.” John gives three reasons why people make unethical choices. First, people tend to do what’s most convenient. They fall into the trap of doing what’s easy, but not necessarily what’s right. Second, people do whatever it takes to win; what they call “win at any cost.” If it’s a choice between winning by being unethical,

or being ethical and perhaps losing – then ethics loses. Third, he refers to situational ethics. People rationalize their choices with relativism. They make their choices based on whatever seems right at the time.

That’s why it is critical that every company and organization has a defined code of ethics.

According to “Inc.com,” a code of ethics is a collection of principles and practices that a business believes in and aims to live by. A code of business ethics usually doesn’t stand alone, it works in Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Vocabulary for those who remember the 1950s

I recently received an E-mail from one of my readers, which spoke about some terms that are no longer used today. They have disappeared, or are no longer a part of our conversational

language.

When was the last time you discussed “fender skirts?” At the same time maybe “curb feelers” were part of that conversation. For the younger crowd, fender skirts partially covered the back wheels of your car, making it “really cool.” Curb feelers were springy wires attached to the front fender, which made a clattering noise then they touched the curb, thereby saving your car from damage caused by the cement curb scratching along the lower side of your car.

Keeping with cars, remember the “steering knobs” on the steering wheel? There were also “continental kits,” which made your car another foot longer and probably were the most cool addition available. Much more attractive than hiding the spare tire in the trunk.

Cars had an “emergency brake,” which might have some use in an emergency, but became “parking brakes.”

The floor of the car had more gadgets than today’s cars. The older cars had a

foot feed rather than an accelerator. It also had a clutch, a foot operated starter knob and the foot operated dimmer switch.

In the years before the 1950’s, our shirts and maybe our pants were sewn at home. The shirts were occasionally made from the cloth which had been previously used as flour sacks. During the 1950s and after we became accustomed to “store-bought” clothes.

The older homes frequently had hardwood floors and the living rooms and bed rooms were covered with “wall to wall” carpet. Today we hear of many homeowners changing from carpet back to hardwood floors???

Remember when someone was in “a family way?” Today it is simply referred to as expecting or pregnant. I think the new way sounds better.

A brassiere, or on some language, a bussinhalter, simply became a bra.

Remember a “Picture Show,” now it is simply called a movie. We made coffee from a “percolator,” today its simply a coffee maker. Many of us kept our foods in a Frigidaire, rather than a refrigerator.

What ever happened to lumbago?

One term that is currently being removed from our language is “supper.”

Everyone now has dinner at suppertime.

Maybe in the future we will change the name on a famous picture and pay tribute to the “Last Dinner.”??

conjunction with a company’s mission statement and more specific policies about conduct to give employees, partners, vendors, and outsiders an idea of what the company stands for and how its members should conduct themselves.

“The key in distinguishing a code of ethics from these other documents is to hit the right level of specificity. It should address both the particular nuances of the company’s industry as well as its broader goals for social responsibility and should be concrete enough to serve as a guide for employees in a quandary without laying out rules for every situation that could arise.”

Michael Connor, the editor and publisher of the online magazine “Business Ethics,” believes that there’s no such thing as a business being too small to benefit from a code of ethics.

Having a code is “often viewed as a luxury or something that is an added cost,” he says. “The reality these days is that the business that does not have a code of ethics subjects itself to a much greater risk in its day-to-day operations and if there is an unfortunate incident, they expose themselves to much greater

risk [from] regulatory and prosecutorial authorities.”

Ethics codes don’t have to be long, complex documents. One example of a simple statement of ethics was written in 1904 for Rotary International. Apply these four questions to everything your organization says or does: • Is it true?

• Is it fair to everyone concerned?

• Will it build good will and better relationships?

• Will it benefit everyone concerned?

Because we knew Duane, we have been changed for the good. Duane was the definition of goodness. He was everyone’s servant- never looking for any reward in return. Duane was here to help one another, walk the mile with you and help bear your load. This was my husband and our dad.

There aren’t enough words of gratitude to express our deep appreciation for all the kindness, love and support showered on us through the Great Sadness. Daily we are reminded of what a wonderful man Duane was, however because of your deep caring, the road we bear is less rocky. Everyone of you touched our lives and we are humbled by the outpouring of support from the area.

There are so many people to mention because everyone of you are special to our family. Duane truly loved each and everyone of you. Shawn Larson who stood by our family from the eve of Duane’s death, and went out of his way for us. Dianne Peters who sang beautifully. Fr. Ron who spoke so kindly at Duane’s celebration of life. All the ladies who prepared the meal and served it. Kyle at Shelly’s Funeral Chapel was so helpful at a time we needed direction because we were lost. He helped us find our feet to move us in the right direction. A special thank you to my neighbor, Roxanne, who has unselfishly spent time with us to share her professional expertise during this unbelievably difficult time of so many decisions.

Morrison County and surrounding area held our hearts through the Great Sadness.

We realize what a huge hole Duane left in the community. He was full of energy and life in one fast second, Duane was gone. Not just for us, but for everyone.

Duane was not just a member of the Swanville Lions, he was the definition of Lions. The respect and honor you showered upon our family was so wonderful. We felt your sorrow and love. The American Legion gave a military salute that Duane would have loved. Duane was America! He loved what the American Flag stood for.

Most of all, Duane loved Swanville. He loved the quaint village, the warm people and the whole community who embarrassed all of us. He took pride in the beauty of Swanville.

GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU. Because each of us knew Duane, we have each been changed for the good!

Obituaries Patricia L. “Patty” Thompson P a t r i c i a L. “Patty” Thompson, age 67 of Sauk Centre and formerly of New Brighton, died Thursday, November 9, 2017 at St. Cloud Hospital, surrounded by her family.

A funeral service was held Monday, November 13th at First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre. Pastor Rebecca Thomas will officiated. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery.

Patricia Louise Dietrich was born September 20, 1950 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of Otto and Francis (Conover) Dietrich. While growing up, her family lived in Northeast Minneapolis and in 1968, Patty graduated from Edison High School in Minneapolis. As a young woman, Patty truly enjoyed roller-skate dancing and was admired for her talent. On October 3, 1970, Patty was united in marriage to Louis Thompson to whom she was married to for 18 years. She was proud to be the mother of two sons, LT and Jonathan. Throughout her career, she worked many hours in the Deli and Meat Departments of Reichel’s Grocery in Isanti and later, she worked in retail stores – always enjoying a job serving customers. When Patty moved back to New Brighton, she made her home with two of her sisters and the three of them, along with their mother were often referred to as “The Golden Girls!” In September 2017, Patty made her home in Getty Street Apartments in Sauk Centre to be closer to both of her sons.

Bella, Patty’s dog, brought her hours of companionship and unconditional loved that she appreciated. Along with her family, her grandchildren were the most precious to her.

Patty always loved a shopping trip, bringing home many deals she just couldn’t pass up.

She had a real liking for purses – using a different purse for each day and outfit she wore. Patty was always ready to go to the casino and could play the penny slot machines for hours. At home, she enjoyed crocheting before her arthritis became severe, playing Bingo and card games, and doing Word Find puzzles. At Getty Street, she had discovered how much fun it was to play Bingo and cards with her new friends and neighbors.

Patty quickly became part of the Sauk Centre community and joined First Lutheran Church in October.

She will be deeply missed by her sons, LT Thompson (Nancy Stoermann) of Melrose and Jon (Ashley) Thompson of Burtrum; grandchildren, Jordan Thompson, Bryce Thompson, and Brooke Thompson; sister, Marlene Betzold of New Brighton; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Raymond A. “Ray” Zenzen, age 92 of Melrose, died peacefully on Friday, November 10, 2017 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held We d n e s d a y, November 15 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Ray was born in Elrosa, Minnesota on February 28, 1925 to John and Emily (Schultz) Zenzen. On September 20, 1955 Ray married the love of his life, Laura Brake in Ward Springs, Minnesota. He

MaryAnn Maus, age 86 of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 16 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating, Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating, and Deacon Ernie Kociemba assisting. Interment will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

MaryAnn Hoeschen was born January 5, 1931 in Little Falls, Minnesota to Joseph and Augusta (Ostendorf) Hoeschen and grew up north of Freeport. Years after completing the eighth grade, MaryAnn moved to Minneapolis and worked in retail for about two years before moving back to Sauk Centre where she worked at a shop called “Mary Ann’s”. She met Donald Maus at the New Munich dance hall and the couple married on May 26, 1953 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. MaryAnn

was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, an active member of the community, and deeply dedicated to his faith and family. Ray opened his home, heart, and deeply loved his children.

Ray proudly served our country on the front line in the Korean War. Ray continued his comradery with his fellow vets and served many years as Commander at the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Zenzen of Melrose; children, Mary MayersBolinger (Louis Bolinger) of Portland, Oregon, Danelle Rahn (Donald Rahn) of Kensington, and Arnold Zenzen of St. Cloud; grandchildren, Kurt Zenzen of Kensington, Ryan Fischbach of Portland, Oregon, Angela Stennick of Portland, Oregon, and Rose Rae, Breanna, and Brent Zenzen of St. Cloud; and five great-grandchildren.

Ray joins his son, Joseph F. Zenzen; parents; brothers, Richard, George, and Edwin Zenzen; and sisters, Cecelia Loxtercamp and Sister Rachel Zenzen.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Christian Mothers, Daughters of Isabella, and St. Mary’s Mission Group. MaryAnn enjoyed shopping, dancing, gardening, and loved her flowers. She was also very creative in sewing and decorating.

Survivors include her children, Ken (Eileen) Maus of Melrose, Sharon (Bob) Ross of St. Joseph, Dale (Michelle) Maus of Sun City, Arizona, Peter (Carla) Maus of Princeton, and Julie Stroschein of Killeen, Texas; 16 grandchildren and 13 greatgrandchildren; daughter-in-law, Mary Kay Maus of Melrose; and son-in-law, Ken Elstad of Dallas, Texas.

MaryAnn was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Maus on October 11, 1991; children, Gary Maus in 1993 and Ruthie Elstad in 2014; son-in-law, Kent Stroschein in 2007; and brothers, Walter and Lawrence Hoeschen.

Serving as casket bearers will be Craig Maus, Kyle Maus, Jon Maus, Matt Maus, Misty Maus, and Abby Elstad. Cross bearer will be Beth Lapping and scripture bearer will be Kelly Rokus. Petitions will be read

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Sharon M. Nathe, age 70 of Avon, will be 11:00 AM, Friday, November 17 at the St. Benedicts Catholic Church in Avon. Fr. Greg Miller, OSB will officiate, burial will be private.

Friends and family may gather in the St. Benedict’s gathering space after 10:00 AM, Friday. Sharon died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017.

Sharon was born September 19, 1947 in Holdingford to Alfred and Alvina (Rakotz)

Dobis. She graduated from Holdingford High School and then married Bob Nathe on August 12, 1967. The couple recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Sharon worked on the production line at Gold-N-Plump for over 24 years, retiring in 2007. She was a member of the St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon.

Sharon is survived by her husband, Bob Nathe in Avon; her children, Robert Nathe, Jr., St. Joseph; Terry (Aimee) Nathe, St. Cloud and Kim (Loren) Wenning, Freeport.

She is also survived by her grandchildren, Paige Nathe, Kyle Nathe, and Brett Wenning.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers and sister, Allen Harlander, Alfred Dobis, Jr., Ronald Dobis, Robert Dobis and Joan Hughes.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Herman Solarz, age 91 of Holdingford was held Wednesday, November 15 2017 at All Saints, St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Holdingford.

Father Gregory Mastey officiated, burial was in the parish cemetery.

Herman died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017.

Herman Solarz was born October 15, 1926 in Holdingford to Zachary and Mary Rose (Kostreba) Solarz. He married Deloris (Dotsie) Kostreba on September 29, 1949 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in St. Wendel, she died in 1983. He married Karen Kurtz on October 17, 1992 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in St. Wendel. Herman attended country school in Holdingford until the 8th grade. He served in the Army during World War II in Manila and the Philippines. He worked in construction and was a mechanic at Kroska Motors until he retired. Herman was a member of All Saints, St. Hedwig since 1949. He was a member of the Frank Feia American Legion Post #211 for over 70 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, riding his Harley Davidson, fixing cars, yard work and spending time with his children, grandchildren and other family members. He enjoyed watching the Discovery Channel and American Pickers.

He watched the Catholic Mass faithfully on T.V. Herman will be remembered for chewing Redman tobacco when awake: first thing in the morning and last thing until he went to bed. Mary’s dog, Swirl, grew on Herman, she was his companion when Mary & Karen were at work.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Solarz, Holdingford; sons, Roger Solarz, Royalton; Kenny Solarz, Royalton; daughters, Deborah (Bernard) Barhorst, Holdingford, and Mary Solarz, Holdingford. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Brandon (Jenna) Barhorst, Sartell; Deanna Barhorst,

on the family farm. Ralph entered the US Army in 1955 and proudly served his country in Europe. Upon returning in 1957, he resumed working with his family on the farm. Ralph and Tony handled the dairy cows and George handled the pigs. Family was very important to him and he enjoyed having his nieces and nephews visit. Ralph loved to go fishing and playing cards. He lived on the farm until his death. Ralph was a member of the Seven Dolors Church.

Ralph is survived by his brothers; Carl Hondl, St. Cloud; Roman (Connie) Hondl, Edina; many nieces and nephews; his sisters-in-law Delrose Hondl, Shirley Hondl, and Mary Hondl; his brother-in-law Thomas Dattilo; and many more family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents Anton and Agnes, his brothers George, Anthony, John, Anselm, Mathias, and Mathew, his sisters Ann Maslow, Mary Hondl, and Agnes Dattilo, his sisters-in-law Lorraine Hondl and Lucille Hondl.

Duane Johnson (1951 - 2017)

Duane Johnson was a very generous man, To sit back and not help people was not in his plan.

He was born in Little Falls, a nearby Minnesota city, That he was only allowed to give his family and friends 66 years is a pity.

He led wherever he did go, He made things run in an easy flow.

Duane and Joyce raised four beautiful children in Swanville, The reality of losing their father so early in life gives them a chill.

Duane served in the military for his country to defend, Through his whole life he did his patriotic beliefs send.

He believed in helping veterans every day, To help them he would go out of his way.

He managed Swanville as its Mayor for many years, To lose a good man so early in life brings everybody to tears.

He had Swanville Lions Club blood running through his veins, He was always there working through all the rains.

When this happens we all turn to God and ask “Why?” “Why did this man have to now die?”

We all get our answers from God in our own way, Some will understand; but others will never know to this day.

We will cherish every moment that we had with Duane, We will remember all the knowledge that we did gain.

He died while doing what he always loved best, Volunteering to help others always put his above the rest.

Duane; we say goodbye with heartfelt grace, We will follow your volunteerism example at an amazing pace.

What is joy? Is it a feeling? An attitude? An emotion? Is it something we “get” or “discover” or “find” on the road of life? Is it temporary or permanent? Can it be passed from one person to another? Is it internal or external? Is it possible it could be all of the above?

Things were not going well for Moses. He knew that something was missing in the lives of the Hebrews and he knew what it was: joy. They had been through difficult days and trying times.

They grumbled and groaned and griped.

They were critical of their conditions and angry with God. Why, they won-

dered, did they leave what they had for something they had been promised but could not find. They were disenchanted and discouraged.

So, Moses, the man of God, knew what to do: He went to God in prayer.

“Relent, O Lord! How long will it be?

Have compassion on Your servants. Satisfy us in the morning with Your unfailing love that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.”

Moses reminded God that He was a God filled with unfailing love. In earnestness he begged God to show His compassion and relent – “We’ve suffered long enough! When we awaken tomorrow morning,” he prayed, “fill our empty hearts with a renewed awareness of Your unfailing love.” Moses knew that only God could restore the “joy of their salvation” and the blessings that repentance brings.

Often we become like the Israelites - wanting God’s blessings without being faithful to Him. Hearts once filled with joy are empty because of sin. It’s time to repent!

Dear Dave, Our son is about to graduate from law school.

He took out a loan to cover the cost, but we’ve always been debtfree and have been paying on it to help him out while he finishes his studies. The balance on the loan right now is around $30,000. He has a job waiting for him after he graduates, so we’re thinking about telling him it will be his responsibility to finish paying off the loan at that point. Is that wrong?

-Pat Dear Pat, There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a young law school graduate earning a living and paying off his own debt. I hope he appreciates how generous you both have been, but you shouldn’t feel as if you’re obligated to continue making these payments after he finishes school and begins working.

Now, if you decide to pay it off for him as a gift for successfully completing law school - and you’re in a financial position to do so without hurting yourselves or your future - that’s fine, too.

It would be another incredibly generous act. And in my mind, generosity of that magnitude should be met with gratitude and appreciation of equal measure.

If you choose this route, let him know how and why you were able to give him this gift. Don’t hold it over his head or beat him up with it, but stress the importance of being wise with money, saving and investing, and staying out of debt in the future. Let him know if he’ll follow your example, he might be able to do the same kind of thing for his kids someday. That would be a wonderful thing to see, wouldn’t it?

Dear Dave, I know you advise most people to buy used cars. Do you have a rule of thumb for a mileage limit when it comes to buying a used vehicle?

-Paul Dear Paul, No, not really. Sometimes mileage alone can be a good indicator of the quality of a used vehicle, but that’s not always the case. I would also advise doing a little research, and maybe letting a trusted mechanic have a look to determine if there are any issues that might give you trouble soon.

The more inexpensive, and cheaply made a car is, the more likely it becomes that it would be worn down by higher mileage. Some vehicles start to get a little ragged at 100,000 miles, while others — some of the better makes — are just getting a feel for the road at that point. Of course, a lot depends on your budget, too.

Overall, I would advise you to look for something that has a good reputation, a solid history, and as little mileage as possible. There are good, used cars out there that will last for years!

But, It’s a Black Friday Deal! - By John Young Next week is a big week for retailers across the country.

The after Thanksgiving Black Friday sales kick in starting, well, just about the time the Thanksgiving meal ends that is.

This historically has been a big weekend to score some great deals on items you probably don’t need, but we can’t pass up because they are Doorbuster Deals! There are a few thoughts that I want to share with you as you start to make your shopping plans for next week!

1: There are items you can buy locally and support your neighbors and our local community. If you are buying those types of items, please check locally to see where they are price wise and know that spending a few extra cents on an item isn’t the end of the world for you, but it will help keep the lights on for a local business.

2: If you were looking for a killer deal on a large ticket item, you are probably too late. Many retailers had sneaky October sales on TVs and larger ticket items and that pricing was actually better than you will find on those same items with their reduced Black Friday deals.

Two items I have been following were actually $100 less in mid October than they will be at the same store on sale for Black Friday. Pay attention to the fall pricing on those larger purchases, and you will find your best time to buy might NOT be the day after Thanksgiving.

3: Do not be afraid to price check.

It might look like a GREAT deal in the store, but you might find that you can find the same item online for less. The online shopping world has come of age and you will find some deals are much better with the Amazon app, while other times the local retailer can offer a much better deal.

4: Do not ask to price match items on Black Friday. Most major big-box retailers suspend the price matching for this upcoming weekend.

5: Think about doing some research on Wednesday. Some of the Black Friday deals you will see in the flyer will be out already on Wednesday. You will be able to take a few more minutes to check out the items before the massive Friday crowd and you might find that the price on Wednesday is at, near or even LOWER than the Black Friday pricing!

6: Doorbuster deals are typically a version of bait and switch to an extent. There is a limited supply of doorbuster items (but they are typically better stocked than they were a few years back) and the items on sale are a special model or a special purchase that is only available for this promotion at this store.

Since you will probably not have a way to score the Door Buster deal, you will then move to the NEXT best deal which seems to be a nice discount, but that TV was probably cheaper a month ago.

7: Watch those model numbers on the items. Those special models and special purchase items mentioned above can mess you up! At store A you will have a

model number that is the same until the last digit as the model number at store B. It makes it more difficult to compare prices when the TV at this big box store is a slightly different model than the one at that big box store. This is very common with larger stores so you can’t do a direct price match when they have sales throughout the year. You also can’t online price shop when the model numbers don’t quite match up.

8. Shop later. If you really don’t need to try for that Door Buster, try going after lunch. You can still find some great buys, and you are not fighting the crowd. Yes, you may not be able to find that $5.00 espresso machine, but you probably didn’t want a $5.00 machine cluttering up your counter for a couple of weeks before it broke and you returned it.

There are times in our lives where we can remember feeling pretty foolish over wrong decisions or wrong words that we have spoken. I am certain we can all think of an embarrassing moment or two that we would like to forget.

Nobody likes to admit that they were in the wrong. But in reality, we have two options, either get upset at ourselves and others and not learn anything- or, admit our wrong and choose to move forward in a positive direction!

When our error is out in the open, exposed for what it is, and we still do not want to be responsible for it, like blame something or someone else instead of fully accepting that you were plain and simple in the wrong - this... I call donkey talk.

There is a somewhat comical story in the Bible found in Numbers 22 that clearly shows a stubborn man that he is indeed on the wrong path. Yes, I believe that God has a sense of humor!

Balaam was on a rebellious path not living for the Lord. He had a faithful donkey whom he relied on for transportation. Balaam was some sort of magician and sorcerer who apparently had some pride issues along with his other ungodly errors in the way that he lived.

The Lord had clearly told him what not to do and he made his own decision to go despite what the Lord had said.

His faithful donkey, whom this man was riding on, saw an angel of the Lord with a drawn sword standing on the road ahead! The donkey turned off the road into a field and Balaam got angry at her and began to beat her! Three times the donkey saw the angel and tried to stop her owner from continuing on that path.

Three times her owner beat her. The third time his donkey stopped because

of the angel, there was no other way to go- not to the right or to the left because the way was too narrow.

Then, the Lord allowed the donkey to speak to her owner. She said, “Balaam, what have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?” And he answered the donkey in anger by saying that she made a fool of him and that if he had a sword he would kill her! The donkey then reminded her owner of her faithful service and the Lord then opened Balaam’s eyes to see the angel of the Lord that was blocking his way holding a drawn sword! The Lord sent this angel to stop him on his reckless way. It must have been quite the scene!

This should encourage us to stop and examine the path that we are on.

Most of us do not have a personal donkey, but we do all own a personal conscience that speaks to us when we are on a wrong path. I would hope that we all know the difference between good and evil without needing a donkey to confront us. Although, I do know some pretty stubborn humans.

I am so thankful that the Lord intervenes in our lives and lets us know that He desires for us to be on the path that He has paved for us. He doesn’t usually Ben

Swanville City October 3, 2017 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, October 3, 2017. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Norm Carlson, and Tony Maciej. Members absent: Jim Molitor and Deb Wood.

Also present: George Minerich, Mark Hallen, reporter Sheila McCoy, and Lonny Hutchins.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held September 5, 2017 was reviewed. A motion was made by Tony Maciej to approve the minutes as printed. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given.

A motion was made by Tony Maciej and seconded by Norm Carlson to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Lonny Hutchins presented council with a project the Swanville Lions would like to start working on.

The Lions would like to replace the fence around the pond by Lake Pepin. It would be a 5’ high mess fence with a locked gate. Council was in agreement to allow the fence to be replaced.

Mayor Lange presented council with resolution #17-1003 which would authorize acquisition of the land owned by Cory DeFoe in the North Berkey addition as eminent domain. The city desires to add green space and park adjoining the North Berkey plat. Norm Carlson made a motion to accept resolution #17-1003.

Tony Maciej seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried. The land will be appraised in the near future.

Mark Hallen, with Widseth, Smith & Nolting, was present and went over the outstanding bill the city had received from the North Berkey Avenue project. After discussion, council agreed to pay the $6,803.50 to WSN. Hallen also discussed the North Berkey Avenue project is completed with First Street being striped and finished also. He will file a notice of completion with MPCA. George Minerich, from MN Department of Health, was present to go over with council the first phase report of the well head protection plan.

Minerich explained in detail water supply information and quality results. At this time, results of the city’s

water tested good. Recommendations were given for future improvements.

After questions were answered, Mayor Lange made a motion to accept Wellhead Protection Plan part 1.

Norm Carlson seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Lange presented council with a land use application from Mielke Mark LLC. Mielke’s would like an approval to lay a monolithic slab for the footing. Tony Maciej made a motion to approve the monolithic slab, Norm Carlson seconded the motion.

Council approved. Mielke’s application is for a 1500’ square patio home with a 1000’ square garage to be built in the North Berkey Addition, Lot 3, Block 1. Tony Maciej made a motion to approve Mielke Mark LLC land use application. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion passed.

Mayor Lange presented council with resolution #17-1003b. The resolution states the Swanville Horseshoe League would like to donate $2000.00 toward the horseshoe pits renovation. Tony Maciej made a motion to accept resolution #17-1003b.

Norm Carlson seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The Swanville Fire Association assessment was received for 200172018 in the amount of $4580.88. Tony Maciej made a motion to include the assessment with the October claims.

Norm Carlson seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Lange would like to have in the 2018 budget $2000.00 tagged for the water trail project of Swan River, from the bridge on the county line road to Swan Lake in Pillsbury.

The plan is to clear debris in the river to make it easier to kayak or canoe.

This would hopefully attract more visitors to the areas. Tony Maciej made a motion to budget $2000.00 for the trail project. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The League of MN Cities Insurance Company continues to investigate the fraud issue. No money has been recovered to date. There is still the possibility of the City receiving money from the insurance company minus the deductable.

The Council will address this issue in the spring. The residents that do access the alley may put Class 5 gravel in the potholes if they choose.

Department Reports: Maintenance Report: Koopmeiners reported on water and sewer levels.

Koopmeiners stated the jetting is finally done.

Fire Department Report: The Fire Department will be electing their officers in the November with recommendations to the Council at the January meeting.

The Fire Department officers will review the applications for the new firefighters in the next two weeks.

First Responders: First Responder Vice President Garrett Doucette reported that they are having their election of officers for recommendation to the City Council in January.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the November Calendar and upcoming events. Stevens inquired on how to handle Veteran’s Day holiday since it is on a Saturday and the office is closed on Friday, which would be the traditional day off. The Council approved for Stevens to take Thursday, November 9 off.

Planning Commission: No meeting held.

The service door on the southeast side of the Rec Building needs replacing. The northeast service door needs the trim replaced. They would like to close up the south garage door on the lean-to. Bartells moved to have Scott Forystek do all the repairs for $800.00 with estimated cost for the materials to be approximately $1060.00, 2nd by Olson. Motion carried unanimously.

Olson moved to approve Ryan Thomas to represent the School Board on the Rec Board Committee, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Maintenance Building: David Drown explained how the General Operating Bonds will work to pay for the Maintenance Building.

Lange moved approve resolution 11-6-2017-1 a resolution authorizing the issuance, sale and delivery of $208,000.00 general obligation capital improvement plan note, series 2017B, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

Westrich stated work on the new maintenance building has been started.

The Council picked out light grey and medium grey for the siding and roof colors to be installed on the new maintenance building.

Region 5 Summit: Johnson and Stevens attend the NJPA Region 5 summit in Staples. The main topic was how to get the younger generations involved in our communities.

Purchasing Policy: Lange moved to approve the purchasing policy as presented effective November 6, 2017, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

New Business: Assessment of unpaid City Utilities onto property taxes.

Lange moved to approve resolution 11-6-2017-2; a resolution approving the assessments of unpaid city utilities onto property taxes as presented, 2nd by Olson. Motion carried unanimously.

St. Mary’s Gambling Permit: Lange moved to approve a gambling permit with no waiting period set for February 18, 2018 at St. Mary’s Church located at 308 South Main, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for October.

Claims list included claims 31143121 for a total of $4,819.37. Mike made the motion to approve the claims; Ray made the second, Motion carried. Mike made the motion and second by Ray, to approve renewal of Township CD to mature 11/09/17.

Mail included advertising fliers.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported that he had received a bill for two more beavers. He then stated he was not completely satisfied with the tar projects and would like to discuss some of the issues with the contractor.

Some spots were narrow and rough, some areas already had broken off and the tar was not matching driveways.

Ray also brought up a culvert that was plugged and he felt should be replaced before damage is done to the new tar.

Additional agenda item: The Dept. of Transportation sent a map for the Board to review and return with updates to any roads. Notice was received of a buffer rule public hearing in Sauk Centre. Mileage certification was signed by the chairman. Mary Ann gave a report on the election equipment updates and grant monies that were available. Board felt this was not needed at this time. Region 5 has a Development Summit on November 28, 2017 in Long Prairie. The annual Fire Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 21, 2017.

Mike will attend as Township representative.

Public Comment: None.

Stearns County Sheriff’s Office

November 3, 2017: There was a traffic crash at the intersection of County Road 33 and County Road 16 in Zion Township, about 2.5 miles north of the city of Paynesville on County Road 33. A 2009 Chevrolet Silverado pulling a long gooseneck style trailer was westbound on County Road 16.

The Silverado was driven by Danny Heine, 51, of Tripoli, IA. Passengers in his vehicle were Maaika Hol, 34, and Axel Heine, 7 months, also of Tripoli, IA. A 2007 Ford Edge driven by Char Peltz, 45, of Paynesville, was traveling southbound on County Road 33. Preliminary investigation indicated that Heine failed to stop for the stop sign on westbound County Road 16 and proceeded into the intersection. Peltz’s Edge struck the side of Heine’s Silverado and became entangled in the truck and trailer combination. Both vehicles ended up in the ditch.

All parties were transported to the Paynesville Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

Peltz was later transferred to the St. Cloud Hospital for further treatment. Sadly, Peltz died on Saturday, November 4, as a result of her injuries. The accident remains under investigation. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Paynesville Police Department, Paynesville Fire Department, Paynesville Ambulance and Melrose Ambulance and Minnesota State Patrol.

November 9, 2017: At 1:21 a.m., the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was called to the address of 28083 County Road 12 in St. Martin Township, northwest of St. Martin for a structure fire. One of the turkey barns for St Martin Farm, Inc. was fully engulfed. St. Martin Fire Department along with Lake Henry Fire Department were also dispatched to the call. When officers arrived, St. Martin Fire Department was already on scene working to control the fire.

The 1,000 foot barn is divided into sections where the east section was a total loss. The other sections had minimal damage. Approximately 6,000 turkeys perished in the fire. Jim’s Electric responded to assist with keeping the other barns functioning properly during this time. Paynesville Ambulance was also on scene to assist as needed. This incident will remain under the investigation.

Todd County Sheriff’s Office

November 9, 2017: At 04:44 a report of a one vehicle accident on County 33 near County 2 in Grey Eagle Township. A Dodge Avenger driven by Brittany Stodolka of St. Joseph failed to negotiate a curve, entered the ditch and struck a tree. The vehicle sustained moderate damage, Stodolka suffered minor injuries. Road conditions may have been a contributing factor in the accident.

November 10, 2017: At 07:54 a report of a snowmobile that had struck a tree in the ditch of US 71 near MM180 in Little Sauk Township. The previous evening a Polaris snowmobile driven by Amber Wiener of rural Long Prairie, struck a tree in the ditch of US 71 near MM 180. Wiener was not injured as a result of the accident.

November 10, 2017: At 17:17 a gun shot incident that had occurred at 25575 250th St. in section 10 of Long Prairie.

Devlin Marcyes age 34 had been hunting with Bradley Schmidt age 42 and had returned to the garage/shed at the Schmidt farm of 25575 250th St. Devlin was wiping off the rifle when it discharged hitting Bradley who was standing nearby in the upper leg. Bradley was taken via ambulance to the Long Prairie Hospital, and then air lifted to North Memorial Hospital. The incident is under investigation.

November 14, 2017: At 06:28 Amanda Schmidt who resides at 501 State Street E., Grey Eagle reported the theft of a number of items from her vehicle. The theft occurred during the overnight hours of 11/13/17 to the early morning hours of 11/14/17. Anyone with information regarding this theft is urged to contact the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.

Thanksgiving: 7 Tips for Spending Less Money and More Time Together

Courtesy of EveryDollar.com There’s just nothing quite like Thanksgiving weekend: a morning prepping turkey and learning Grandma’s famous roll recipe, parades and football on the TV, dinner that tastes of nostalgia, long afternoon naps and... mad dashes to the mall.

In between eating and shopping, we’re sharing moments with family as we gather for what may be the first time in months. And better yet, we know Thanksgiving is just the start of the exciting season to come complete with gift-giving and more food!

It’s no wonder we shell out the big bucks for our time together, right? Unless you wake up from your turkey-induced coma with loads of regret from all the sales you indulged in at the mall. This year try something a little different: Enjoy spending more time with one another while spending less money. We’ll help you! Here are some tips: 1. Prioritize your holiday plans. Think beyond Thanksgiving for a moment. Write out all the things you’d like to do between now and the new year. Include travel, gifts, dinners and parties. Take some time to rank your holiday wish list and be sure your budget reflects your decisions. For instance, you may stay home for Thanksgiving so Santa has the cash to do his thing. Or maybe you’ll choose to trim your Christmas gift budget and spend that money on a Thanksgiving trip to see family or friends.

2. Make a budget and check it twice. Don’t you know that Santa works year-round? So should your budget. Now that your holiday priorities are in order you can budget appropriately for the coming season. Before you head out the door to grab a few groceries or to snag some good deals, sneak a quick look at your budget.

Confirm that what you’re buying fits the budget so you can shop with confidence.

3. Keep things simple. Sometimes in our Pinterest and Instagram world, it’s easy to forget what Thanksgiving is all about: being thankful.

And if we’re honest with ourselves, we all know that people are what really make our lives rich.

With this is mind, think about simplifying these two things so you have more time to spend with the people you love: • Decorations. Encourage your kids to trace their hands to make paper turkeys for a fun gar-

land. Go outside and gather pinecones from the backyard for a pretty centerpiece. Or stretch a roll of butcher paper across the table with prompts like “I’m thankful for...” Place a bunch of markers or crayons on the table for your guests to grab.

• Dinner. Swap expensive cast iron pots and fancy china for disposable plates and pans (bonus: easy cleanup!). Focus on a few key dishes like the turkey or a ham, two of your favorite sides and one dessert, but leave the rest of your ideas for another time. According to Farm Bureau, by sticking to the basics you can feed 10 people a complete Thanksgiving dinner for around $50.

4. Accept invitations from others. Did you get an invitation to join family or friends at someone else’s place for Thanksgiving? Take them up on the offer! While it’s fun to host (and you should certainly open your home if you want to), it’s just as fun to be a guest. Show your gratitude by offering to bring a dish and helping with cleanup after dinner. You’ll save money and make a friend for life!

5. Volunteer your time. Call us crazy, but there’s really no better way to build your savings over the Thanksgiving weekend than to skip your own dinner and provide one for someone else in need. Contact a local soup kitchen or homeless shelter and ask how you can be of service. You might just find that this is your new favorite tradition. Plus, you can invite your friends and family along!

6. Be a smart shopper. Surveys suggest the average person will drop $743 between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Talk about an expensive weekend! We’re okay with this number as long as you’re getting good deals, buying stuff you already planned to buy, and keeping all of your spending in line with your budget. Stay on track by researching sales and making a specific shopping list before heading to the store or sitting down at your computer.

7. Give yourself margin. We all enjoy the holidays more when they’re not crammed with activities and stress! Less really does give us more. As you approach the start of this busy season look for opportunities to slow down. Build space into your day and into your budget. Allow yourself a little breathing room, so you have the chance to take in and appreciate the joy that’s happening around you!
