Wisdom is sunlight of the soul -By Harvey Mackay Quotes, aphorisms, proverbs or whatever you want to call them -- I’m a junkie.

I picked up the habit from my father who was an Associated Press journalist.

Readers of my nationally syndicated column will recognize them as morals.

They need to be short, snappy and to the point. A good moral or proverb must teach a lesson, and I am not offended when I hear they are their favorite part of my column. Readers tell me that my morals are displayed on their refrigerators, company bulletin boards, auto dashboards and office walls.

One of my sources is reading proverbs from around the world since we know so many of the American proverbs. Do some of these sound familiar? People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. Look before you leap. Two heads are better than one. A friend in need is a friend

indeed. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Don’t judge a book by its cover. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.

Strike while the iron is hot. Never put off until tomorrow what you can do today.

My only problem is that I have collected so many that I will never be able to attach all of them to a column or book chapter. And I think these messages can stand alone, even though I would love to expand on them! Here are some of the best ones I’ve found from around the world. “The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Water Water didn’t always come out of a faucet. There wasn’t always a shower, a flush toilet or hot water from the tap.

Every farm had a well, which originally supplied water with a pail and a rope. In later years the wells were covered with a wooden floor and a hand pump was installed to produce water. Water was carried in pails from the pump to the locations where water was needed.

Watering the livestock was a daily job. Getting water to the residence was more irregular. The drinking water consisted of a pail, usually placed by the sink. A long-handled dipper was used to get the water out of the pail. You dipped water from the pail to a wash basin in the sink to wash your hands and face.

You filled the dipper and drank from it, over the water pail to avoid dripping water on the floor. Since the dipper was larger than a human mouth, water dripped off of your chin and back into the pail. The whole family drank water this way until the pail became empty, when a new pail of water was brought to the house. It was common for the

families to all become sick of the same disease at about the same time.

Heated water came from the water pail too. Water was dipped into a kettle or the reservoir on the cook stove. The cook stove was usually hot, which kept a supply of warm water available.

Domestic hot water was used for cooking, dish washing and baths. Dish washing was done in a dish pan, which would hold enough water to get clean dishes. The bath was usually done on Saturday evening. Since the bath required a larger pan and more water, the same water was used to bathe a few bodies before it was dumped out. There was no bath room, so baths were usually done in the kitchen. Sheets hung on chairs supplied privacy.

Used water from the sink was drained into a “slop pail” which needed to be emptied outside the home. Indoor plumbing didn’t exist so body waste was disposed in the “slop bucket” which was dumped in the cow yard as needed. Water used for clothes washing was carried outside in the wash tubs the clothes were washed in.

Water usage was much less than it is today. It just wasn’t as readily available.

Obituaries Timothy J. Luebesmier

Memorial Services were held Thursday, November 8, 2018 at the Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, St. Cloud for Timothy J. Luebesmier, age 63 of Long Prairie who passed away on Sunday, November 4, 2018. Rev. Gerald Dalseth officiated and interment was in Assumption Cemetery, St. Cloud.

Timothy was born on January 15, 1955 in St. Cloud to Melvin and Luella (Midas) Luebesmier. He was a truck driver for over 44 years and most recently for Transystems in Renville. Timothy enjoyed hunting, horses and hobby farming. He was a wonderful father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Timothy is survived by his parents, Melvin and Luella Luebesmier of St. Cloud; children, Mike (Heather) of Long Prairie and Sara Luebesmier of Eagle Bend; fiancé, Kathy Larson of Montevideo and grandchildren, Keisen Luebesmier, Kailey Luebesmier and Kolten Luebesmier.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Gary Luebesmier.

Victor “Vic” Scherping

Victor “Vic” Scherping, 71-year-old resident of Long Prairie, MN passed away on November 6, 2018 at his residence. A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 16 at 7 PM at the Iten Funeral Home in Browerville, MN with Pastor Anna Payne officiating. A visitation will be from 4-7 PM prior to the service at the funeral home. Honorary Pall Bearers will be the Tuesday Morning Coffee Crew.

A private family burial will be held at a later date in Bearhead Cemetery.

Vic was born on February 24, 1947 in Freeport, MN to Gothard and Gertrude Scherping. He grew up in Farming, MN before moving to the Swanville area. He was united in marriage to Linda Eggerth on January 5, 1968 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala, MN. The couple raised three children. Vic was known as a jokester

and would “B.S.” with anyone. He always tinkered with motors and built many unique projects. Vic enjoyed tractor pulling and was well known for his John Deere 50 & “the popper.” Along with his two sons, he owned and operated Mid-Central Pullers Skid and put on many garden tractor pulls.

He enjoyed competition sports as long as it had a motor. Vic was involved in organizing snodeos, hospice tractor rides, and classic snowmobile runs. He worked as a crane operator for 35 years for Robert Schroeder Construction and Glenwood Bridge. He was a proud member of the Local 49ers. Vic will be forever missed, but always remembered by his family and friends.

Victor is survived by his loving wife, Linda Scherping; children, Kelly Scherping, Laura Scherping, Allen (Tina) Scherping; brother, Lambert (Gloria) Scherping; sisterin-law, Elaine Scherping; 7 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Alvin Scherping; sister, Geraldine Scherping; and infant sister, Clara Scherping.

He graduated from Melrose High School in 1990. Joel was a big outdoorsman. He loved to go fishing and hunting and enjoyed four-wheeling with his buddies. Joel was also a great cook and loved to smoke meats, especially any wild game he hunted. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport.

Survivors include his mother, Margaret Overman of Freeport; sister, Jane Saboe of Spicer; brother, Neil (Kelly) Overman of Peculiar, Missouri; nieces, Dana, Amanda, and Katelyn; nephews, Justin, Mathew, and Derrick; great nieces, Nefertari and Sasha; and great-nephew, Tobias.

Joel was preceded in death by his dad, John “Sonny” Overman; brothers, Greg Overman and Mark “Pincher” Overman.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Ervin (Pete) Otto Asmus

Ervin “Pete” O. Asmus, died peacefully at Centracare Nursing Home in Long Prairie, Minnesota on November 6, 2018. He was 80 years old.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Prairie. Visitation for friends and relatives will be held at 10:00 AM prior to the memorial service at the church. Burial will be following the memorial service at the final resting place at Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery, Long Prairie. Lunch will follow the memorial service at 12:00 PM in the fellowship hall of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Pete was born and baptized December 30, 1937 in Round Prairie township to Ernest and Emily Asmus. His family moved to a farm outside of Long Prairie in 1942, where he grew up and went to country school. Pete was a graduate of Long Prairie High School in 1955. He then enlisted in the Army National Guard where he served honorably for three years. He took over the

family farm in 1963 and farmed there while raising his own family until 1991. From there, he headed to Homer, Alaska for the summer and then returned to Long Prairie where he drove school bus and worked at Long Prairie Produce until his retirement in 2008. Together with Bev, he traveled back to Alaska two more times and enjoyed many trips to the North Shore and Black Hills. He especially loved to go to Custer State Park to see the buffalo calves.

During his life, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards with friends, going on scenic drives around Long Prairie, building and designing his cabin in the woods, various wood working projects, sharing stories with family and friends, and spending time with people - especially his grandchildren.

Pete is survived by his loving wife Bev of 16 years, ex-wife Carole (Hedlund) Asmus, daughter Kim (Serge) Phillips with their son Luke, son Brian Asmus, daughter Brenda (Dan) DeZiel with their daughter Petra, stepson Peter (Cheryl) Thieschafer with their children Sydney and Maddie, stepson Dave (Margie) with their children Suzie and Sara, and stepson Chuck (Sarah) with their children Clayton, Colton, and Charlee Jo, and many nieces, nephews, other extended family members and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Emile (Schmidt) Asmus, siblings Ernest, Melvin, Vernold, Lenora, Arden, Wilma, and Ruby.

-Andrea Dear Andrea, Home warranties are a waste of money even if you don’t have quite that much set aside in an emergency fund. I recommend an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses to cover the unexpected things that life will throw at you. This amount of cash, sitting in a good money market account with check writing privileges, will give you easy access in the event of a financial emergency.

I don’t recommend extended warranties of any kind. They’re just not a good deal. You’re better off to selfinsure against things breaking down, and putting what would have been profit and marketing dollars for the extended warranty company in your own pocket!

Yes, my advice is to temporarily stop making contributions to your 401(k) until you save up an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses.

It shouldn’t take a year, though, to set aside an emergency fund if you’re debtfree and making decent money at your job. Just make it part of your monthly budget plan, and get that emergency fund set up in a few months.

Here’s the way I look at it. If you don’t have an emergency fund, but you’re contributing to a 401(k), there’s a good chance you’ll end up cashing out your 401(k) if something happens that leaves you with a large, unexpected bill.

When you cash out a 401(k) early, you get hit with a penalty plus your tax rate.

That’s not a good plan!

And that’s just one of the reasons I tell people to have an emergency fund in place before they start investing.

Alan H. Nordman was born on October 6, 1944 in Melrose, Minnesota. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family.

Preceded in death by parents John and Esther, siblings Arnie, Jim, Nell and Rose.

Survived by loving wife Judy, children Eric (Cathy), Quin (Michelle), Kara (David) Wald, 9 grandchildren, and siblings Dave, and Tom. Alan was happiest when surrounded by family at the cabin and watching sports.

For the month of October, these students were chosen by their teachers for good behaviors in Swanville Elementary. Teachers used the theme of “hard work and good effort on assignments” when choosing PAWSitive students!

Each student is awarded a PAW on the board, along with a special pencil. This year they also get a Swanville Elementary water bottle. Congratulations to all!

Swanville Junior High Student of the Month Swanville High School is pleased to announce Tyra Powell as the October Junior High Student of the Month. Tyra is the daughter of Stephanie and Russell Powell.

Her future plans are to go to college and medical school to be in the Neonatal/ Pediatric field. She has participated in volleyball and softball since sixth grade, and she has played the clarinet in band since fourth grade. Tyra is participating in the fall play this year for the first time. Tyra has consistently been on the A Honor Roll, and she was her class’s president in eighth grade and Student Council representative in ninth grade.

Her favorite things about school are seeing her friends and playing sports.

Her advice for other students is “Don’t stress yourself out; have fun in school.

Have fun with your friends and make memories.” Her hobbies include watching Netflix, playing volleyball and softball, and hanging out with her friends.

said, “It has been wonderful getting to know Tyra this past volleyball season.

She is a hard working, dedicated, and skilled player. Her passion for this sport keeps her driven and motivated to be the best that she can be. She has shown tremendous growth on and off the court.

She has the potential to be an amazing leader for the girls. Her love for the sport has really made her stand out and I look forward to watching her continue to grow playing the game as well as off the court. She is a remarkable young lady.”

John wrote that “If we freely admit and confess our sins, He is faithful and just true to His own nature, faithfulness and promises - and will forgive us of our sins and continuously cleanse us of all of our unrighteousness - everything that separates us from Him.” If, in our daily lives, we are not experiencing His benefits or blessings, it is because there is some sin in our life that has come between us and the Lord. And if we want His blessings to return to our lives, we must go to Him in prayer and ask for His forgiveness. Forgiveness is not a once-in-a-lifetime event. It is something we must do repeatedly as we do a daily inventory of our lives.

Dear Motor Medics, M y transmission failed while on vacation.

The failures not the end of the world, I understand things break but most of the vacation was spent dealing with the truck. I use it to pull my camper and boat together and when it stopped so did the vacation. This 2008 ¾ ton GMC truck has 90,000 miles and I never changed the transmission fluid because when I bought it they said it’s good to 100,000 miles. Is there anything I should’ve done to prevent the failure? They told me I needed a rebuild because it was burnt up.

-Terry in Fargo, North Dakota Dear Terry, First, what is the recommended tow rating for the truck? Compare this to what you are towing and if you are exceeding it get a bigger truck or less of a load. Make sure you take into account your fully loaded setup with all fluids and your family included at the time you weigh it. Tow ratings should also not be at 100%, more like 80% to allow for headwinds and such. Over pulling is a number one failure cause but you can still have transmission failures even without towing. We recommend changing the fluid when towing every 30,000 miles or so and observing the condition of the fluid between changes.

The fluid in this truck is meant for extended life but some circumstances will reduce that life. Also be sure the transmission cooler is the proper size.

Dear Motor Medics, I’m having starting issues with my 1991 Chevy full size truck. I have a 350 engine that was just rebuilt about 10,000 miles ago. When we performed the rebuild we also replaced the battery, alternator and battery cables. The starter was replaced about five years ago so we opted not to replace it at the same time.

When the vehicle has been running for a couple hours and is shut off it will crank very slow and sometimes not start at all unless you let it sit until the engine cools off. The problem seems to be worse if I have driven it harder such as towing or highway use. What do you think is wrong and how can I fix it?

-Ray in Pierre, South Dakota Dear Ray, It sounds like you have a starter that has failed. The first step is to verify there are no problems with your cables or battery by performing voltage drop checks on the cables and a capacitance test on the battery even though they are new. Once you know they are all good then check the current draw of the starter both hot and cold. If it is pulling too much current when hot you may have either bad bearings in the starter or a bad armature. Did you install headers when you did the rebuild? If so, there may be too much heat reaching the starter and it may need to be shielded.

Swanville City October 2, 2018 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, October 2, 2018. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Norm Carlson, Deb Wood, Jim Molitor and Tony Maciej.

Also present: Jeremy Boots and Tyson Hajicek from Moore engineering, Lonny Hutchins and reporter Sheila McCoy. Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held Tuesday, September 4, 2018 were reviewed.

A motion was made by Tony Maciej, to approve the minutes as printed. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Deb Wood and seconded by Jim Molitor to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Representatives from Moore engineering passed out the agreement (contract) between Moore and the City. After discussion, it was decided the city attorney will be sent the contract for review and will wait until word is sent back from attorney for approval.

City maintenance worker, Lonny, stated he will be ordering some class 5 dirt to be delivered at the end of North Berkey Avenue to make a turn around. Lonny discussed with council having a heater installed in the city greenhouse. Council was in favor both projects.

Mayor Lange presented a land use permit for Kathy Plakut who would like to replace her old outside steps with new 10’x6’steps with a roof over. Planning and Zoning has approved this permit.

Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the permit for Plakut. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Stu Johnson would like to build a garage close to his property line on Rhoda Avenue. Council agreed a variance will have to be applied for. A Public Hearing is set for October 30, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. just before the regular Planning & Zoning meeting. The clerk will send out notices to residents within 350’ from the property.

Mayor Lange presented a preliminary budget for 2019. The Mayor asked council to look the budget over for approval at the next meeting.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Tony Maciej made a motion to approve the claims. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting because of the general election will be held at 5:00 p.m., Friday, November 9, 2018.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Tony Maciej and seconded by Norm Carlson to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus & Mike Rohe.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

The clerk provided copies of the October 1, 2018 minutes to the board. Ray made the motion to accept the minutes. Mike made the second. Minutes approved.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for October. Claims list included claims 3249-3258 for a total of $26,894.85. This included claims to prepare Arden Drive for the 2019 tar project. Mike made the motion to approve the claims; Ray made the second, Motion carried.

Mail included advertising, Big Birch Lake newsletter and the county’s feedlot list.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray asked which of the culverts needed to be marked before winter. It was decided two on 321st, one on 337th and one on 335th. The culvert on 321st and 130th west corner is under water, Ray suggested finding out who the property owner is and getting permission to remove the beaver dam. Mike made a motion to have Ray take care of the beaver issue. Second

by Ron. Motion carried, Ray reported he had given permission for an approach to the field near John Young’s property.

Weight limit signs for 335th would need to be ordered and cost approx. $100.00 a piece. Considered putting up the same ones the County uses.

Ray suggested the Board approve having Herdering taper back the Big Birch access near Kutters so the slope is not as steep. Board members agreed. Ray had contacted the DNR about the tar project to include Arctic Drive. No plan yet as there will need to be some research first.

Chickadee Drive where the road was rutted up, has been repaired as of this meeting.

Ron reported that Tri-City is still planning on doing repairs to 335th yet this fall.

Arden Drive- prep work is complete and the sloping of the road has created somewhat of a ditch for run-off. Todd County Commissioners have signed the agreement.

Boxelder Drive – no action taken for now.

Asphalt patching product advertising that was received included a free trial, Ray felt it was a good product and the Board should give it a try.

Grey Eagle City October 9, 2018 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joe Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 9th day of October 2018 in council chambers. Council members present were Roland Ahrendt, Thom Muellner, Bill Pohlmann and Brian Hollenkamp. There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were Chico Hellmann, Lori Hellmann and guest Ken Messer.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the agenda as written. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the minutes of the September 11, 2018 meeting as written. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Chico reported that when he was driving the plow truck to Melrose it lost all power. A new sensor was installed but was still not running properly. It is possible that the turbo either needs to be cleaned, for approximately $600 or replaced for approximately $1,200.

Joe will check with Melrose 1 Stop on cleaning or repairing the turbo.

Ken Messer was in attendance seeking a building permit to install a cement sidewalk from his deck to the cement by his driveway.

Ken stated that the cement would end approximately fifteen feet from the alley. A motion was made

by Thom Muellner to approve the permit with the following conditions: even though the permit is good for one year, the council would like to have this done yet this fall, weather permitting. Otherwise it needs to be completed by the spring. The council does not wish to have this drag out. There will be no working on this after 9:00 p.m. on any night. Ken would need to maintain the approximately fifteen feet from the alley as he stated it would be. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The council discussed water and sewer rates. The sewer rates have been increasing incrementally over the last several years in anticipation of the sewer rehabilitation project. A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to increase the sewer rate from $37.50 to $39 effective January 1, 2019. Water rates will remain as is. A second was made

The council discussed the need to replace the John Deere Zero Turn lawnmower. It will cost approximately $10,000 - $12,000 to replace depending on what they get to replace it. Currently there is a quote for a new commercial John Deere as well as a new Kubota. A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to request $5,000 from the Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club towards the purchase of the new lawnmower. The remainder of the funds needed would come out of cemetery funds. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

There has been some discussion regarding the easement that the City has north of the old school property. This easement is for City purposes only, not for the general public to use as they wish.

The council may grant use of this easement when there is a need for city purposes or functions. Any requests for use of this easement must come before the council.

The council discussed the City parks. The council would like to remind residents that the City owns, maintains and insures the facilities with generous donations from the Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club. Any improvements to any of the park facilities need to go through the Council at a City Council meeting.

Stearns County Sheriff’s Dept.

On November 8, 2018, at approximately 4:25 a.m., the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center was notified of a building on fire behind the Cenex gas station in the City of St. Martin. Deputies arrived on scene to find a storage shed on the north side of the co-op property fully engulfed in flames.

St. Martin Fire and Rescue, Lake Henry Fire Department and Albany Fire Department responded to fight the blaze. St. Martin Fire Department controlled the fire on the west end of the building to prevent several large fuel tanks from exploding. These fuel tanks were located approximately 30 to 40 feet from the end of the building. Deputies spoke with an employee who arrived on scene shortly after the fire was mostly extinguished. They stated the west half of the building was used as a maintenance shop and the east half of the building was used for seed corn storage. An evacuation was not needed due to the direction of the wind blowing the smoke and the containment of the fire. The building was a total loss. The State Fire Marshall was notified and will be investigating the cause of the fire.

November 10, 2018: At approximately 11:20 p.m., the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a 911 call regarding a crash with injuries. The caller was reporting the crash occurred approximately two minutes ago on 400th Street and 215th Avenue in Krain Township. This location is approximately 1.5 miles west of County Road 10 on 400th Street.

According to Sheriff Don Gudmundson, a 2010 black Ford F-150 crew cab pick-up, owned by Russell and Paula Klaphake of Avon and driven by Zachary Klaphake, 17, of Avon, was westbound on 400th Street when he failed to negotiate the curve, left the road and struck a large tree head on.

Zachary Klaphake, the driver, called the crash into 911. Initial reports claimed one occupant had minor injuries, one had a head injury, two were semi-conscious and the female occupant had an injured leg, possibly broken.

Adam Young, 17, of Albany, was the front seat passenger. Nathan Tamm, 18, of Albany, was in the backseat behind the driver (Klaphake). Next to Tamm was Alayna Mae Kolb, 16, of Albany, then Nathan Schmidt, 18, of Albany and Jacob Burg, 15, of Avon, was behind Young.

It is believed that Klaphake, Young and Tamm were wearing their seat belts and it is believed the other occupants were unrestrained. The air bags in the Ford were deployed on impact. The truck is considered to be totaled as a result of the crash.

Schmidt was flown from the crash scene by North Air Ambulance to North Memorial Hospital. Young was transported to the St. Cloud Hospital by Gold Cross Ambulance then airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC).

As of Sunday evening, November 11th, Schmidt and Young were in critical but stable condition.

Klaphake, Tamm, Kolb, and Burg were treated at the St. Cloud Hospital for their injuries. As of Saturday evening, these four occupants were treated and released.

F-150 was westbound on 400th Street when it ran off the road where it curves to the left and struck a tree. Klaphake was the driver. The investigation provided evidence that Klaphake had been consuming alcoholic beverages. He was asked to submit to a Preliminary Breath Test (PBT) which revealed the presence of alcohol.

A warrant was obtained for a blood sample from Klaphake. Further alcohol testing will occur at the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Lab in St. Paul.

The Minnesota State Patrol will be conducting a reconstruction of the accident scene. Once the investigation is complete, the case will be referred to the Stearns County Attorney’s Office for consideration of charges.

Several Stearns County Deputies responded to the scene of the crash along with the Holdingford Fire Department, Gold Cross Ambulance, the Minnesota State Patrol and a helicopter from North Air Ambulance.

November 10: At 17:39 p.m. responded to a hunting accident involving a hunter that had been shot at 21691 County 105. Dustin VanNorman had suffered a gunshot wound to his lower body from a juvenile male that was hunting on the same property. VanNorman was transported by private party to the Long Prairie Hospital and was later transported by Long Prairie Ambulance to the St. Cloud Hospital. The incident remains under investigation.

UCare recently held its ninth annual “A Salute to Excellence!” event to recognize 13 clinics and care systems with top results in 2017 Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) measures. CentraCare Health was recognized for improving the health of UCare members enrolled in Medicare, Minnesota Senior Health Options and Special Needs BasicCare plans.

George Morris, MD, Physician VP of Performance Excellence and Hannah Wieshalla, Manager of Quality Improvement and Network Support at CentraCare Health accepted the UCare Excellence in Health Care award that honors health care providers for providing outstanding, high-quality service to UCare’s Medicare and Medicaid members in Minnesota.

Upsala Senior High Student of the Month The Upsala School staff is proud to honor Annika Gunderson, 12th grade daughter of Charlie and Beth Gunderson, as Upsala School’s September Senior High Student of the Month.

Gunderson is an active member of her school. Gunderson is the National Honor Society President and Student Body Vice President. She is also the Senior Class President and active on the Student Council. Gunderson plays volleyball, basketball, and softball. She also participates in Drama Club.

Gunderson is a high achieving student. She is taking a number of college

classes. She has made the A Honor Roll and Student of the Month several times.

Gunderson is a leader in the school. She also volunteers through her church and is employed at Camp Lebanon.

Gunderson’s favorite class is precalculus because she enjoys having Mrs. Hovland as a teacher. She feels the most valuable activities are sports. She states that they teach you a lot of life lessons including leadership, how to work in a group, and patience.

Outside of school, Gunderson enjoys spending time with her family and friends, watching Netflix, and going to WalMart with her friends Amber and Cheryl.

Gunderson plans to attend Concordia Moorhead next year to achieve a major in Graphic Design. Her advice to her classmates is “Don’t stress so much over your classes, enjoy your time in high school while you can.”
