Don’t forget to thank a teacher -By Harvey Mackay One day a teacher asked her class, “Can anyone give me a sentence with an ‘object’ in it?”

A little girl said, “Teacher, you’re the most wonderful and beautiful lady I’ve ever seen.”

The teacher responded, “Thanks, but what is the ‘object’”?

The little girl added, “I’d like to have a longer recess today.”

Okay, the little girl was buttering up her teacher, and I don’t blame her. But I’d like to butter up all the teachers out there for a different reason – they make a difference in every life they touch. Nov. 18-22 is American Education Week.

And if you’d like to plan ahead, Teacher Appreciation week is May 3-9, 2020.

I have a personal admiration for teachers – my mother taught fourth grade. She made sure my sister and I were the best students we could be and instilled in us a love of lifelong learning.

She always reminded us that school ends, but education doesn’t.

Teachers are the unsung heroes behind almost every successful person.

From preschool through advanced

degrees, they challenge, encourage, rein their students in when necessary and then set them free to discover and achieve. I suspect you could ask any CEO, business owner or person who has followed their dream if they can remember a favorite teacher, and they will have an immediate answer.

As I was researching this column, I found some remarkable data from the National Center for Education Statistics.

As of fall 2019, there are 3.7 million teachers in public and private schools managing 56.6 million students in grades pre-kindergarten-12th grade. (Those numbers don’t include the students who are home-schooled or online learners.)

That’s an enormous responsibility to face day in and day out.

Education is easy to take for granted. With schools in nearly every town or neighborhood, buses to provide transportation to the front door, books and resources available for all, and qualified teachers to lead the way, who wouldn’t jump at the chance to get an education?

Yet we don’t always appreciate what we have in America and most developed countries. Our opportunities begin soon after we learn to walk and talk. All we have to do is show up and pay attention (and do some homework.)

Teachers are the people who turn four walls into a learning environment

and help develop the natural curiosity and creativity that all kids seem to be blessed with. As students’ progress through the grades, teachers help them to expand their horizons and find their passions. And when it’s time to move on to post-secondary programs, teachers are there to prepare young minds to take on the challenges of life after school.

Grayson Kirk, former president of Columbia University, put it well: “The most important function of education at any level is to develop the personality of the individual and the significance of his life to himself and to others. This is the basic architecture of a life; the rest is ornamentation and decoration of the structure.”

I’m pretty sure I made all my teachers earn their salary every day.

When I think about who had the biggest influence on my life, aside from my parents, I can remember a few. But one stands out: Professor Harold Deutsch, my academic advisor at the University of Minnesota. I scored a “D” in his History of World War II class, and when I went to plead my case for a better grade, I was quickly informed that my affinity for the golf team had to take a back seat to my studies. He didn’t mince words. And I am forever grateful.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Waving The first roads in our area were a c t u a l l y trails which meandered across the area, changing directions based upon what direction the logging road had taken. These trails avoided steep hills, slews rivers and swamps reminding travelers to stick to the high ground. As time passed, some of the farmers felt that they would prefer rerouting the road so it wouldn’t be going through their fields. The roads were then rerouted around their property lines, making additional corners in the road.

Remembering that these trails were, in most cases, simply two wagon wheel ruts. These ruts were followed going in both directions. There was very limited travel on these trails, so their limited capacity didn’t create a transportation hassle. There may have been very few occasions when someone drove their wagons at a greater speed, such as trying to meet a doctor at his office. Even an emergency trip was slow enough for other travelers to pull off of the trail to make room to pass. In later years, the government took control of some roads, improving the surface and making them wider. The roads continued to follow the already established trails causing them to be referred to as following a cows trail.

As time passed, the public wanted to have less travel through low areas filled with water in spring and after a rain. The cars improved and people felt that they needed to spend less time on the road, so new roads were created with fewer and

greater speed acceptable corners. The public seemed to think that their time was better spent somewhere other than making a road trip. Go, Go, Go, Rush, Rush, Rush. This is our new world.

When the early travelers met on the single lane roads, they probably waved and stopped to share a few words, because they probably knew everyone that traveled on the road. As the cars and roads improved more strangers began to use the roads and you didn’t stop to converse with strangers, but you still waved to them as they passed. This was probably a hearty wave with both hand and arm.

Improved cars and roads made cars travel faster, causing us to avoid looking at other drivers since we probably don’t know them anyway and they probably won’t wave back. However, there is still a limited amount of waving on rural roads. You are traveling toward each other at 110 miles per hour and it is very difficult to recognize them, especially if we are more mature. The usual situation is that after the approaching car is ¼ mile behind us, we think that maybe that could have been someone that we know very well.

To feel safe, one should raise the fingers of the hand on the top of the steering wheel. This is safe because you are showing a form of recognition to someone you may know, but if it is someone you don’t know they will try to think of who that person was. It messes with their mind. He, He, it helps to add some fun to your travels and make someone think you are a really nice person.

The noted American novelist James Michener received an invitation to a dinner at the White House in the 1950s from U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower.

And, even though he felt it would be an honor to meet the president, he politely declined.

Michener wrote: “Dear Mr. President, I received your invitation three days after I had agreed to speak a few words at a dinner honoring the wonderful high school teacher who taught me how to write. I know you will not miss me at your dinner, but she might at hers.

Michener promptly received this reply from an understanding President Eisenhower: “In his lifetime, a man lives under 15-16 presidents, but a really fine teacher comes into his life but rarely.”

Mackay’s Moral: A person without an education is like a building without a foundation.

Obituaries Lourdine C. Berscheit Lourdine C. Berscheit, age 89 of Grey Eagle, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, November 11, 2019 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 15 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday and from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Friday at the church in Grey Eagle.

Lourdine Christine Heinen was born January 2, 1930 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Henry and Elizabeth (Poepping) Heinen. Growing up, she worked on the family farm. She met Bernard Berscheit at the New Munich Ballroom and were married May 1, 1951 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa. After their marriage, the couple farmed southeast of Grey Eagle where they raised their family until retiring to town in 1995.

Lourdine also worked as a seamstress for

Karleen I. Tomsche Stearns Manufacturing.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle and the Christian Women. Lourdine enjoyed sewing, crocheting, canning, baking, gardening, and doing puzzles.

Lourdine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bernard Berscheit on March 18, 1997; daughter, Charlene Meagher on March 31, 2010; brothers and sisters, Raymond Heinen, Delores Toeben, Edward Heinen, Evelyn Muellner, Marcella Ostendorf, Jeanette Berscheit, Harvey Heinen, Verena Wegleitner, and Mildred Muellner.

Karleen I. Tomsche, age 83 of Albany, died peacefully surrounded by family on T h u r s d a y , November 7, 2019 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m.

Saturday, November 16 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Edward Vebelun, O.S.B. officiating and Rev. Julius Beckermann, O.S.B concelebrating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friday and from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Seven Dolors Gathering Area in Albany.

Parish prayers will be held at 4 p.m. followed

by Christian Mothers at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the Seven Dolors Gathering Area.

Karleen Ida Thelen was born December 10, 1935 to Joseph and Anna (Haehn) Thelen. Karleen was born and raised on the Thelen family farm near St. Martin.

She attended a one room schoolhouse near the farm through the 8th grade. Later in her school years she assisted her teacher and helped make the school lunch. Karleen stepped into a caregiver role helping to raise her four younger siblings after her Dad died when she was 19. Karleen’s first job away from home was a housekeeping job in St. Cloud. After a few months, she moved back home and enjoyed helping her sister in Albany with housework and her young children. During this time, the neighbor boy, Ray, caught Karleen’s eye, and their courtship began. Ray and Karleen were united in marriage on May 22, 1957 at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin. The couple took over and lived on the Tomsche Family farm, which became a century farm in 1992, and still is in the family name to this day.

Karleen enjoyed gardening, quilting, and baking. As a young wife she cooked and baked large meals to feed threshing crews. She raised and butchered chickens to contribute to the farm income, had a cake decorating business, and worked outside the home in various jobs. She also sewed many of her children’s clothes. Karleen was a devoted and committed wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She also held a

special place in the hearts of her nieces and nephews and will be deeply missed.

Throughout the years of raising their children, they enjoyed many family trips.

Ray and Karleen continued traveling during their retirement visiting nearly every state. They loved seeing the mountains and visiting their children that lived out of state. Karleen loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Karleen was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany, and a member of Christian Mothers for over 50 years.

She volunteered for the church bazaar and was the Dressing Committee chairperson for many years. She was also active in the quilting group at church. She and Ray delivered Meals on Wheels for 27 years.

For over 50 years she was a member and leader of her local TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) chapter. Karleen was a musician.

She played the piano, and in her younger years, she played accordion in a band with four of her brothers. She also enjoyed taking an occasional trip to the casino.

Survivors include her children, Peter (Elizabeth) Tomsche of St. Joseph, Paul (Michelle) Tomsche of Avon, Joann Tomsche (Doug Baysore) of La Quinta, California, John (Christine) Tomsche of Marietta, Georgia, Rosann (Greg) Winn of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Michelle Tomsche of Denver, Colorado; 14 grandchildren; sister and brothers, Estelle Schwinghammer of Albany, Mark (Evelyn) Thelen of Melrose, Joseph (Renee) Thelen of St. Martin; sisters-in-law, Marion Thelen of St. Martin, Arlene Green of Paynesville, and Roseann Hemmesch of St. Martin; and brother-inlaw, Ben Lass of St. Cloud.

Karleen was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Tomsche on October 1, 2018; her parents; brothers and sister, Bob Thelen, Fred Thelen, Leon Thelen, Virginia Thelen, and Clifford Thelen; brother-in-law, Val Schwinghammer; and sister-in-law, Dolores Thelen.

Serving as casket bearers will be Stanton Tomsche, Ryan May, Mitchell Tomsche Biley, Evan Tomsche Biley, Paul Michael Tomsche II, and Jonathan Tomsche. Cross bearer will be Kelsey Thelen and scripture bearer will be Jovan Tomsche. Readers will be DeAnna Hodge, Courtney May, Emily Winn and Rachel Tomsche. Ermalinda G. “Erma” Poepping

Ermalinda G. “Erma” Poepping, age 89 of New Munich, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at the CentraCare – Melrose Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 18 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Sunday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Parish prayers will be held at 5 p.m. followed by the Christian Women and the American Legion Auxiliary at 7 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Ermalinda Gertrude Dickhaus was born December 15, 1929 in Melrose, Minnesota to Joseph and Mary (Herzog) Dickhaus. Erma attended a one room country schoolhouse through the eighth grade and earned her G.E.D. in 1995. Erma worked at the hotel in Melrose, Honeywell in Minneapolis, the old Melrose Hospital. She was united in marriage to Melvin Poepping on May 27, 1952 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose, Minnesota. The couple raised their family and farmed until retiring in 1984 and moved into New Munich. After retiring from the farm, Erma went back to work at the Melrose Hospital and retired at the age of 70.

Ronald was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force as well as a member of St. Benedict’s Church and Albany American Legion. Ron worked as a machinist for Colombia Gear as

Val is survived by her daughter Donna (Ken Gustafson) Berry; grandchildren: Megan (Chris Willander) Berry, Mariah (Tim) Lysfjord, great granddaughter Violet Willander; siblings: Dixie Decker and Thomas Rausch, many nieces and nephews, and the families of Boyd and Devona Berry.

Josephine Roering

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Josephine Roering, age 86 of Albany, formerly of Upsala, will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, November 16, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala. Josephine died Wednesday at the Mother of Mercy Campus of Care. There will be a visitation after 10:00 AM Saturday at the church in Upsala. Arrangements are being made by the Miller-Carlin Funeral Homes.

Josephine was born March 31, 1933 in Upsala to Leonard and Paula (Pogatchnik) Verkennis. She was born, grew up on and lived her entire life on the same farmstead, until moving to Mother of Mercy just over a year ago. She married Norbert Roering

on June 12, 1951 in St. Francis. She was a homemaker for most of her life, helping on the farm and raising the couples six children.

Josephine also cooked at the Uptown Cafe in Upsala for a short time. She was a member of the St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Francis where she was a church musician for over 50 years, both playing organ and singing in the choir. She was also a member of the St. Francis Christian Women, the Upsala American Legion Auxiliary and the Sewing Circle.

Josephine is survived by her husband, Norbert, Albany; her children, Charlotte Thieschafer, Upsala; Sandy Gettel, Melrose; Bonita (Robert) Eggerth, Upsala; Rodney (Jan) Roering, Upsala; Karen (Mike) Heinen, Bowlus and Lea (Mark) Reller, Melrose.

She is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren with one still in the oven and one great-great-grandaughter; her sisters Margaret Naas and Myriam (Gil) Stalnick.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Mark Verkennis and sisters, Laura Lyons and Ruth Shodeen.

Kickoff your Christmas season with an entertaining show for the whole family. The Slew Foot Family Band of Grey Eagle will be having a Christmas show at the Elmer Z Event Center in Sauk Centre. Show times will be Friday, November 29 at 7:00 PM and Saturday, November 30 at 2:00 PM. The Slew Foot Family Band (aka Duane and Karen Becker and their 8 children) have been performing around the Midwest for the last 7 years bringing a variety of music and dance to audiences of all ages. This will be the second year for the Christmas kickoff show to start off their Christmas tour of 44 gigs to Nursing Homes, Care Centers and Senior Living Communities from Fargo to New Ulm, Perham to Foley and a

many places in between. The show will feature fiddles, guitar, banjo, mandolin, hammer dulcimer, Irish whistles, the harmonica, dancing and more!

The Slew Foot Family Band will be releasing their 4th CD at the concert entitled “On Vacation” – which will feature 3 original songs: On Vacation, Let Me Hear Your Whisper and an Irish Medley.

The concert will be a free will offering which will help the band with traveling expenses and up-keep of equipment for the Christmas season.

Elmer Z Event Center will be open two hours prior to the event with a taco bar, so come relax to an afternoon/evening of family musical entertainment!

Swanville Junior High Student of the Month

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the October Junior High student of the month, ninth grade student Lauren Miller.

Lauren is the daughter of Jeff and Renee Miller.

Lauren enjoys reading, playing cards and hanging out with friends. She plans to go to college for a career that works with kids. Lauren’s favorite thing about school is participating in sports and learning new things, and her advice to other students is “study for tests, ask questions and stay organized.”

Outside of school she is a volunteer for Vacation Bible School, Swanville Athletic Boosters Club and served on mission team at her church. She has pre-

viously won the Student of the Month award as a seventh grader and is on the Honor Roll. Lauren plays basketball, softball and volleyball and is also currently serving on the Student Council.

She is also in band.

Social Studies teacher Tom Bzdok states, “Lauren is a wonderful student to have in class. She sets high academic standards for herself and works extremely hard to achieve them. She is a very mature young lady who never complains or makes excuses when things do not go as planned. Lauren always has a smile on her face and puts everyone around her in a pleasant mood. She always has a positive attitude, an eagerness to learn, and encourages her classmates in a positive manner. Lauren is well liked by her classmates because she is kind and friendly towards everyone she meets.

Lauren is the type of student who will make the right decisions in life and is sure to put a smile on everyone’s face.

Will they know the God of the Prophets and the Christ of the Apostles and disciples of the early church? Will they learn and follow and lead with the “faith that was once delivered to the saints?”

Or will they surrender their lives to the attractions of materialism and self-centeredness?

Recent studies reveal that 60% of our youth will no longer attend church when then turn twenty. And even though some churches have vibrant youth programs, they are having no long lasting influence on their lives. Few make a lifelong commitment to Christ, to serving Him. It seems obvious that we are entertaining but not educating.

What needs to be done? Moses, once again, provides insight and advice: “May Your deeds be shown to Your servants, Your splendor to their children.”

The fact of the matter is that His deeds and splendor can only be seen in our lives. If our faith does not work for us, “why” they will ask, “should we believe in Your God?”

Dear Motor Medics, I live in an area where we have winter road conditions and see many cars that end up either spun out or in the ditch and some that rear end others. The question I pose to you is about stopping and handling. Recently I started paying close attention to the types of vehicles that were involved in these incidents and I noticed that almost all of them were noticeably older than the ones that had not been involved in the mishaps. Is there a connection between age and lack of control or is it just a coincidence?

-Mike in Aberdeen, South Dakota Dear Mike, There’s a connection between age and control. Many things contribute to how a vehicle stops. When tires are new the tread is deeper, so they shed water and cut through snow better and maintain a firmer grip on the road. A tire that is older with half its tread will have a much greater stopping distance. Also, suspension plays a big part. Most people don’t replace shocks and struts unless they are bouncy but before you feel the extra bounce, they will start to lose their ability to keep the tires in contact with the road as they once did. Many newer vehicles also have elaborated electronic stability control systems. The best way to be sure your car is performing at its best ability is to consult with your mechanic about your vehicles condition on a regular basis.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, My questions about wipers on both the front and rear of my vehicle. I have a 2004 Chrysler Town and Country and the front wipers have stopped working

three years in a row now in mid-winter requiring replacing the wiper motor each time and the rear wiper never seems to wipe the glass completely. The blade has been replaced at least three times and it only works for a few weeks before it starts wiping poorly in the center.

-Janelle in Vandalia, Missouri Dear Janelle, Because of the time the wiper motor is failing I suspect it may be due to the load of ice on the blades.

Winter is brutal on wiper systems. It is extremely important that before you turn your wipers on you make sure that they are not stuck to the glass or bound by heavy snow. Clear the glass with a window scraper if necessary and lift the blades by hand to check them. It they are restrained in any way the motor will bear the load and may fail immediately.

If you have a remote starter don’t forget to turn off the wipers before you get out of the vehicle. Many people damage the system by forgetting them and when the vehicle starts so do the frozen wipers.

As for the rear blade it may be the arm.

The arm will lose tension as it ages and won’t keep the blade in contact with the glass.

Swanville City October 7, 2019 9 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Monday, October 7, 2019. The meeting called to order 4:30 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Deb Wood, Norm Carlson, and Tony Maciej. Absent: Jim Molitor. Also present: reporter Sheila McCoy. Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting Tuesday, September 3, 2019 were reviewed. A motion was made by Norm Carlson to approve the minutes. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor; motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Tony Maciej and seconded by Deb Wood to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor; motion carried.

Mayor Lange presented to the council the new surveyed lot maps of the land to the north of the North Berkey Avenue Addition. On this new map there is a road going to Hwy 28 and a lot for a possible lift station, which the city engineer will look at to see if needed to supply sanitary sewer to the new lots. Rezoning from industrial to residential will have to be done. Council decided to have a Public Hearing before the next council meeting which will be held Wednesday, November 6 at 6:45 p.m.

Council member Maciej suggested putting a public notice sign box on the front of the Swanville Center. Council was in agreement to have one installed to the building. Council member Carlson has one and will have Maciej give the approval and then have it installed.

Council member Maciej presented to council having winter no parking signs made and put up stating: No Parking October 15 through April 1 from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. Violators will be towed. The signs will be posted on DeGraff Avenue from First Street to Fourth Street and from Fourth Street to Hwy 28. This will make it easier to clear the roads when snow plowing. Mayor Lange made a motion to have the signs printed and put up. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

A land use application permit submitted by Randy Drayna to add a 10’x 20’ greenhouse to the north of an existing shed, was looked at and discussed. P & Z has looked at the application and approved this application. Deb Wood made a motion to approve Drayna’s application. Norm Carlson seconded the motion.Council member Maciej made a motion to have signs made and hung up under the Swanville signs stating: building permits required. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Tony Maciej made a motion to approve the claims. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly

meeting will be held Wednesday, November 6, 2019, Public Hearing at 6:45 p.m. with council meeting to follow. The clerk will publish the new date and time of the meeting for November.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Norm Carlson and seconded by Tony Maciej to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus & Mike Rohe, and Erv Herdering. A property owner from 321st.

Ave was also present.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the October 7, 2019 minutes to the board.

Property owner from 321st Ave was present to ask about trees in road right of way, what could be done to move a house in. Township right of way is 33 ft. from the center of the road, however, if the trees are over 6” in diameter, would need permission from the land owner to remove.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for October. Claims list included claims 3376 - 3383 for a total of $194,477.74. This included the paving project on Ascot and 335th.

Mike made the motion to approve the claims; Ray made the second, Motion carried. Mike made a motion to move monies from CD0007 and CD 0010 to the R& B account, Ray made second. All in favor, motion carried. Motion was made by Ray to move $60,000 from the General Fund to R & B fund. Mike made the second. Motion carried. Mail included a letter from Region 5 regarding the need for a business accelerator space, the weed report and an emerald ash bore workshop.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported Arden Drive owners had questions on the steep banks, will watch over winter. 295th tree was cut. Ascot & 335th project is complete and well done. Ray met with Lee from sentence to servethey plan on starting soon. Erv H. reported on a tree hanging over Angler Trail – Ray will check it out. Erv H. presented the 20192020 snow removal contract.

Slight increase over last year. Motion by Ray to accept the contract.

Second by Mike. Motion carried.

Additional agenda item: Fire board meeting will be held November 19, 2019. Mike will attend. Resolution to designate 2020 polling place as the township hall. Ray made the motion, second by Mike, all approved.

Upsala City November 4, 2019 The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 P.M. The pledge of allegiance was said.

On roll call members present were: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Brian Lange, Dennis Westrich, Lana Bartells, and Crystal Benson.

People present: Darleen Maciej, CEDA Associate Robert Harris, First Response President Seth Strassberg, Public Works Director Mike Tschida, Morrison County Record Reporter Sheila McCoy, and City Clerk/Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Lange moved to approve minutes from October 7, 2019 City Council meeting with the correction of Bartells discussing UCDC information not Bartells, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Bartells moved to approve the Special Closed Meeting minutes from October 21, 2019 City Council meeting, 2nd by Benson.

Fire Department Report: Fire Department minutes were presented. A thank you was received from Jo Anne Pinke.

Bartells moved to adopt resolution 11-4-19-1 approving a $2,900.00 donation from Compeer to the Fire Department for grain bin extrication equipment, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

First Responders: The First Response Team minutes were presented. December 8 the First Response Team will be hosting a meet raffle at Bullfrogs with the proceeds being donated to the food shelf. First Response Team President Pro-tem requested the approval to hire to six new members for the team.

Lange moved to approve to hire up to four new members for the First Response team provided they work on finding members who would be available during the working day hours and have some of the new officers be a part of the hiring process, 2nd by Bartells.

Motion carried unanimously.

Maintenance Report: Tschida reported on water and sewer levels. He stated the wing on the snowplow was repaired, the plow truck box is being repaired and readied for winter, the second discharge from the ponds was done, the cost for flagging all the fire hydrants would be approximately $500.00, the playground equipment arrived, and the bathrooms at the park are winterized.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the November Calendar.

Planning Commission: Westrich updated the Council on what the Planning & Zoning Commissioners have been working on including approval of a second approach to St. Mary’s Cemetery and their Open House scheduled for November 20 at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall.

UCDC: Lange moved to approve the resignation from Lana Bartells to leave the UCDC Committee with regrets, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously. Bartells explained the need to schedule the band for Heritage Days.

Recreation Board: Rec Board minutes were presented. Johnson stated that Jim Warga bought Shirley Primus’ shares of Toning Plus and is adding more equipment and classes.

Unfinished Business: League of Minnesota Cities Regional Meeting The council discussed what they learned at the LMC Regional Meetings.

Overdue Utilities: Stevens presented the current list of overdue utility bills, Benson moved to approve to assess any unpaid money to the property taxes, as listed, via Morrison County, 2nd

by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Region 5 Summit: Johnson updated the Council of the Region 5 Summit held in Staples.

New Business: Date for

Short-Term/ Long-Term Planning Session Benson moved hold a planning session on January 20, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Personnel Annual Reviews: The personnel annual reviews will be held after the December 2, 2019 regular city council meeting.

Sale of Old Playground Equipment: Bartells moved have sealed bids for the sale of the wooden playset in the park starting immediately to be opened at noon on November 19, 2019 by Johnson and Bartells and recorded

by Stevens at Upsala City Hall; the playset must be removed by the end of the year, with the funds going back into the park fund, 2nd

by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Holiday Lights Pricing: Stevens shared with the Council the estimated cost to replace the current snowflakes the City displays on Main Street.

Rodger Bense

Called by Jesus, Rodger went to his heavenly home on November 9, 2019.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Prairie with Pastor Noah Wehrspann officiating.

Interment was held at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Long Prairie.

Rodger was born July 20, 1937 to Hubert and Mable (Rasmusson) Bense. He grew up on a dairy farm 1 mile west of Long Prairie where he learned the values of hard work and getting work done right the first time. He graduated in 1955 from Long Prairie High School. After graduation Rodger worked for the Todd County Highway Department for a short time, then enlisted in the United States Army. He returned to Long Prairie in 1958 and spun records for KEYL before beginning his banking career. In 1961, he married Marlys Holler at Trinity Lutheran Church where together they had attended church and would continue to do so for 58 years. Rodger

spent 48 years in the banking industry starting at First National Bank as a teller. He was given the opportunity to attend banking schools and become involved in state and national banking organizations. In 1979 he left First National to take a presidency at the State Bank of Long Lake. Rodger always wanted to return to his hometown and in 1986 founded Lake Country State Bank. He retired from banking in 2007. Fishing was a hobby and passion for Rodger. He could be found on local lakes, summer and winter.

He organized fishing trips of a lifetime with friends to Great Slave Lake, Lake Dubawnt (Nunavut, Canada), Costa Rica, Sitka, Homer and his favorite Kodiak. The outdoors was Rodger’s getaway. There was hunting, picking wild berries, creating trails and cutting wood. Banking was his serious side. Then there were times you couldn’t tell if Rodger was serious or not. You could say he enjoyed giving people a hard time. It took a while, but his grandkids figured him out. All enjoyed the sparring that went back and forth.

Rodger is survived by his wife, Marlys; son, Chad (Barb) Bense of Long Prairie and sister Patty Lowe of Clotho. Two grandchildren Collin Bense and Kayla Bense both of Long Prairie; cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Hubert and Mable Bense and Brother-in-law Keith Lowe.

When it comes to the Baby Steps, when do you recommend setting aside money for a wedding? We have a daughter, and we want to be able to do as much as possible for her when the time comes.

-Jim Dear Jim, That’s a good question. There’s not really a Baby Step specifically for weddings. In my mind, it should probably come after Baby Step 5— setting aside a college fund for your kids.

Maybe part of this is the dad in me, but in prioritizing these things I think a good education is more important than a big wedding. Don’t get me wrong, a wedding is a wonderful event and cause for lots of joy and celebration.

But it’s also a one-day event. Plenty of people have inexpensive, beautiful weddings, and enjoy long, wonderful lives together!

Lynell Elsie “Lynn” Borgerding

L y n e l l Elsie “Lynn” Borgerding, age 65 of Freeport, passed away suddenly of a stroke on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, November 18 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose with Rev. David Mommens officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Sunday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose.

Lynell Elsie Krueger was born February 5, 1954 in New Ulm, Minnesota to Arnold and Marguerite (Bielke) Krueger.

She was united in marriage to James “Jim” Borgerding on June 24, 1978 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Gaylord, Minnesota.

Lynn loved being a daycare provider for 39 years, and took pride in the secondgeneration families she provided daycare

Alois Anthony Gallus A l o i s Anthony Gallus, 97 of Little Falls formerly of Bowlus passed away on November 11, 2019 at St Otto’s.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday N o v e m b e r 18, 2019 at St Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus, Minnesota at 10:00 A.M with Father Greg Mastey officiating. Visitation will be one hour before service at the church.

Burial will be in the Parish cemetery. The military rites will be provided by the Bowlus American Legion.

Alois was born June 5, 1922 to Frank and Bertha (Mucha) Gallus in Swan River Township, Minnesota. He attended District 8 School. He served in the US Navy from 1942-1943. Alois worked on the Gallus home farm until April 1959. After that he moved to Little Falls and worked at Tri-City

She was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose. Lynn enjoyed baking and decorating cakes, crocheting and embroidery, and playing cards and games.

First and foremost, she loved spending time with her family, friends, and all the kids in her life.

Survivors include her husband, Jim Borgerding of Freeport; children, Justin (Amy) Borgerding of Melrose, John (Kelly) Borgerding of Big Lake, and Joshua (Jeanna) Borgerding of St. Cloud; seven grandchildren, Raya, Reese, Jett, Geordon, Chase, Cyrus, and Vivian; sisters, Doreen (Lee) Claseman of Monticello and Arlette (Maynard) Rolfes of Monticello; and brother, Allen (Julie) Krueger of Winthrop.

Lynn was preceded in death by her parents; and grandmother, Elsie Bielke.

Serving as casket bearers will be Justin Borgerding, John Borgerding, Joshua Borgerding, Lee Claseman, Allen Krueger, and Maynard Rolfes.

Memorials are preferred.

Alois loved cheering on the Minnesota Twins.

Alois is survived by his nieces, nephews; great nieces and great nephews and his St. Otto’s Family Alois was preceded in death by parents, Frank and Bertha; sisters, Francis (Joseph) Schwientek, Mary (Phillip) Walek, Sister, Mary Gemma, OSF, Helen (Ed) Hagamen, Brothers, Peter (Angeline) Gallus, George (Julia) Gallus, William (Lucille) Gallus, Frank (Delores) Gallus, John (Louise) Gallus, Joseph (Helen) Gallus.

There is a great feeling you get by being a part of a great crowd. Sundays in the fall bring about small gatherings of Christians in the morning to worship the living God and then larger gatherings to cheer on one’s chosen football team. For those of us blessed with being at a live professional football game or a college game or even a high school game when the stands are packed and the crowd is pumped up cheering on their team there is something grand about being part of this kind of crowd.

Larger churches and even mega churches have one thing going for them that has nothing to do with the Bible and that is that people just like being part of something big.

Politics, sports, concerts, Theater and even worship can draw a crowd and being part of the masses can be exhilarating on its own.

In Revelation 7 we see a glimpse of the innumerable multitude of the sealed and redeemed in heaven gathered to worship Jesus, the Lamb of God, the Savior of the world.

This causes me to wonder why more people gather around TV and in stadiums to watch

football on Sunday than gather to worship the living God. It is as if people believe they don’t need God. We all need God, especially the salvation found in Jesus, because we are all sinners.

Far too many people believe that they will join this heavenly multitude by being a good person or just because God is so loving he wouldn’t condemn people eternally for not going to church. Rejection of God’s forgiveness condemns, failing to hear God’s Word and respond accordingly condemns. God’s Word is clear, all have fallen short, all have sinned. Devotion to the Word of God keeps us in the truth, it keeps us where the blood of the Lamb can wash our robes white as we come out of the great tribulation.

People go to church because they want to celebrate and rejoice in hearing once again of God’s great love for them in Jesus shown to us through the forgiveness of sins. If you have any desire to hear of the wonders of God’s mercy for you and to return thanks and praise to God and celebrate with others all you need to do is go to church. Some are more enthusiastic than others and some stay on point better than others but when Chris-

Manure on the Landscape a Challenge

By Todd SWCD From flooded to frozen, that is the extreme of soil conditions in Todd County this fall. The good news is farmers now have some stable ground to finish a very late harvest; the bad news is this comes at the expense of crop yield and quality. Additionally, with the crops remaining on the landscape late into the fall season, complex challenges arise for land application of manure onto fields.

First and foremost, many manure storages are now full. Manure basins have the engineered capacity to hold the average volume of liquid manure the farm produces between land application events. Todd County ordinance requires all manure storages constructed in the last decade to hold 12 months of manure storage. With the wet spring, not all manure storage basins were completely emptied pre planting. Topped off with the greatest volume of rainfall in 30 years filling up storage

A Preacher Funny

On Sunday, the new young pastor arrived at church and found only an old farmer had shown up.

After waiting a while, the disappointed pastor remarked to the old farmer, “Well, it appears no one else is coming, so we should probably cancel service today” The farmer, dressed in his Sunday best, looked at the young preacher and said, “Well pastor, I don’t know much ‘bout preachin’, but I do know something bout farmin’ and if I went out in the field and found only one cow, I’d still feed ‘em” This excited the young preacher who preached for the next 45 minutes a fierce fire and brimstone sermon. Afterwards the pastor asked the old farmer what he thought.

The old farmer remarked, “Well pastor, I don’t know much bout preachin’, but I do know somethin’ ‘bout farmin’ and if I went out in the field and found only one cow, I wouldn’t give ‘em the whole bale.”

Farmers…the frozen soils in the past week placed us under “winter conditions.”

This means setbacks for surface applications are increased to 300’ from all waters, tile inlets, public ditches, and wetlands.

Surface application of liquid manure onto frozen soil is allowable for farms under 1,000 animal units as long as setbacks are followed and no direct discharge results.

Farms with NPDES and SDS permits also can winter apply liquid manure under emergency conditions onto pre-approved fields listed in their manure management plans.

The SWCD office has received several notifications for farms needing to utilize this emergency clause in 2019. If a spill occurs, react immediately and notify the Duty Officer at 1-800-422-0798. “A call in time, stops the fine” Public road way users… please slow down and be on the look-out for hoses, implements, or equipment operating on or parked alongside roadways, especially at night as many farms are working 24 hours to get their work accomplished.
