Motivation lets you be your best self -By Harvey Mackay

I began a second or third career as a “motivational business speaker” about 26 years ago.

Several times a month, I have the privilege of speaking to a Fortune 1000 company, offering business advice and inspiring stories to stir people to capitalize on their abilities and reach their full potential.

I love this part of my job. I’ve met thousands of people who are looking for help getting started – a little extra motivation. But what they perhaps don’t understand is that while I may be a good storyteller and enthusiastic cheerleader, the motivation doesn’t actually come from me. It’s the “fire in the belly” of the listeners that will eventually determine whether they achieve more than they thought they could.

That’s right – motivation must come from within. You have to ignite your own

passion. Otherwise, how do you explain that in a roomful of people who hear the same message, some will just go back to the office, grateful for the break, while others go on to accomplish great things.

I am fascinated with the science of what makes people tick. Let me share an example from a pioneering thinker in the field of workplace motivation, David McClelland, who developed many of his theories in the 1950s and ’60s.

With no stipulated rules, volunteers were asked to throw rings over pegs just like the fairgrounds game. Most people seemed to throw from arbitrary, random distances, sometimes close, sometimes farther away. But a small group of volunteers, whom McClelland suggested were strongly achievement-motivated, carefully measured and tested distances that would produce a challenge that was not too easy, but not impossible.

McClelland identified the need for a “balanced challenge” in the approach of achievement-motivated people. People with a strong achievement-motivation need to set themselves challenging but realistic goals.

That makes perfect sense to me. I have an easier time getting motivated to sell to an account that I have a reasonable expectation of landing, even if it takes several – or many – calls. I can talk myself into going back again and again if I want it bad enough, and I think I have a chance of success.

As humorist Oscar Wilde put it, “My great mistake, the fault for which I cannot forgive myself, is that one day I

ceased my obstinate pursuit of my own individuality.” In other words, the day he lost motivation to be his best self.

My friend Brendon Burchard has set out a plan that demonstrates how to avoid that trap. His new book, “The Motivation Manifesto: 9 Declarations to Claim Your Personal Power,” is based on the theory that “a vibrant, genuine, and purposeful life is the right of all humankind. . . Humankind’s main motivation is to seek and experience Personal Freedom.”

Personal Freedom, he says, is important because “when controlled by others, life loses its flair, and we are cast into melancholy and mediocrity.”

That sounds to me like the opposite of motivation. So we need to be free to be motivated. But, Burchard says, that presents a difficult choice, “between the comforts of fitting in and pleasing others and our higher motive for Personal Freedom.”

Overcoming fear – specifically fear of failure – is essential to freedom.

He encourages readers to repeat this mantra: “Fear wins or Freedom wins, and I choose Freedom.”

And perhaps his boldest statement is this: “Our entire human value system rests on motivation. None of the great human values that keep us and society in check – kindness, love, honesty, fairness, unity, tolerance, respect, responsibility – would flourish if we were not motivated to bring them to life.”

Obituaries Howard G. “Duke” Adams Howard G. “Duke” Adams, age 81 of New Munich, passed away on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at the CentraCare Hospital in M e l r o s e , Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 15 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Howard Gerard Adams was born May 30, 1933 in Melrose, Minnesota to Ted and Veronica (Briol) Adams. He graduated from Melrose High School. On April 26, 1958 he was united in marriage to Lois Stangler at Sacred Heart Catholic Church

in Freeport. Duke was a diesel mechanic who was employed by Olson Trucking for 15 years and was employed at the hot mix plant in Forest Lake for 30 years, retiring in 2002.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich, Immaculate Conception United Financial and St. Leo Court 786 Catholic Order of Foresters. Duke enjoyed fishing, hunting, cutting wood, and gardening.

Survivors include his children, Jeff (Kathy) Adams of Sauk Centre, Brenda (Jim) Thomes of Long Prairie, Amy (Ron, Jr.) Dingmann of Freeport, and Kelly (Donald) Vornbrock of Freeport; ten grandchildren; and sisters, Lori (Bill) Young of Lakeland, Florida, Linda (Barry) Cook of La Quinta, California, and Doris (Bruce) Samuelson of New Munich/ Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Adams on December 18, 2004; parents; brothers, Floyd Adams and Harvey Adams; sister, Shirley Adams; and sister-in-law, Mickey Adams.

Serving as urn bearer will be Michael Vornbrock. Cross bearer will be Dylan Thomes and scripture bearer will be Alisha Vornbrock. Honorary bearers will be Nicholas Adams, Morgan Adams, Marissa Thomes, Amber Vornbrock, Courtney Dingmann, Tristan Dingmann, and Justin Dingmann.

Survivors include three children, Wilfred (Janet) Boeckers of Elrosa, Mary Ann Boeckers of Elrosa, and Darlene (Wayne) Hallermann of Sauk Centre; four grandchildren, Janell Boeckers, Emily Heying, Maria Wolbeck, and Tony Hallermann; and one great-grandson, Jackson Wolbeck.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leander Boeckers on March 12, 2008; son, Eugene Boeckers on March 7, 1967; grandson, Michael Boeckers on August 14, 1979; brothers, Frank, Edwin, Carl, Ben, Henry, and infant brother Frank Eibensteiner; and infant sister, Anna Eibensteiner.

Serving as casket bearers will be Tony Hallermann, Andy Heying, Gerry Wolbeck, Ralph Boeckers, David Eibensteiner, and Duane Schwinghammer. Cross bearer will be Janell Boeckers and gift bearers will be Emily Heying, Maria Wolbeck, and Jackson Wolbeck.

Amalia Teckla Eibensteiner was born March 18, 1920 in Getty Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Henry and Amalia (Mareck) Eibensteiner. On April 18, 1944 she was united in marriage to Leander Boeckers at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa. The couple farmed near Elrosa in Getty Township, Stearns County.

They moved to Sauk Centre in 2007.

Molly had been a homemaker for Stearns County Human Services for over 15 years and a volunteer driver for Tri-Cap. She enjoyed gardening, canning, playing

Leo S. Hartung, 77 year old resident of Upsala, MN passed away Saturday, November 8, 2014 at his home. A Mass of Christian Burial was held We d n e s d a y, November 12, 2014 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala, MN with Father John Odero officiated. Burial took place at St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery in Upsala, MN. Leo was born on June 9, 1937 in Arban, Minnesota to the late Sebastian and Frances (Young) Hartung. He farmed with his parents near Arban until he married Catherine Arceneau on August 17, 1968.

Leo worked for Curly Ebnets butcher shop in Holdingford as a meat cutter for 2 years.

He then bought a farm near Holdingford and farmed until 1991. Leo later moved to Upsala, where he was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He did janitorial work for the church for about 17 years.

Leo is survived by his loving wife,

Dear Dave, I’m 19, and I have a job making $30,000 a year. I’ve also got about $40,000 in stocks and $10,000 in savings. I want to buy a house in the near future. Should I pay cash and buy it outright, or is a 15-year mortgage okay?

-Sam Dear Sam, I love the idea of paying cash for a house, but I’m even more impressed that you’ve got so much you could put toward a house and a job making $30,000 a year at age 19. Man, you’re really kicking it!

But the thing that keeps sticking in my mind is that you’re still just 19-yearsold. Now, there’s nothing wrong with being 19, but there’s also nothing wrong with waiting a few years and getting a little more life experience under your belt before you take on a mortgage.

At times like this, I think about what I’d tell my own son at your age. And honestly, I think I’d advise him to wait and let life happen for a while. You’ve done some amazing things, but I think the best thing would be to keep piling up cash. Then, take a look and see how you feel and what your life is like in four or five years.

You’ve got lots of time and a huge head start already. When the time is right, either pay cash or do a 15-year, fixed-rate mortgage. And if you take out a mortgage, make sure the monthly payments are no more than 25 percent of your take-home pay.

Dear Dave, W e ’ v e got our starter emergency fund in place, and we’ve paid off the last of our debt. Currently, we rent an apartment but my wife really wants us to buy a house now.

She also wants us to use a 30year, 100 percent financing plan, and says this wouldn’t cost any more than we’re paying in rent. I disagree with her idea, and she’s upset with me. How can I make her see this is a bad plan?

-Alan Dear Alan, I think she probably knows deep down this isn’t a good plan. She’s found something she really likes, and she’s mad because you’re not going along with the idea. It’s called “house fever.”

When you buy a home with nothing down and little to no money in the bank, you’re inviting Murphy and his cousins — Broke, Desperate and Stupid — to move in with you. In other words, you’ll find yourselves in a mess because you didn’t have the maturity and wisdom to wait until you had your fully funded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses in place, plus a 20 percent down payment saved up for a house.

The idea that you save money because your house payment is the same, or even a little less than your rent, is a myth. It costs more to own a home, period. As a homeowner, you’re exposed to all kinds of things you never have to worry about as a renter.

We all have times when we get excited by something we want and do things we shouldn’t. I’ve done it, and I’ll bet you have, too. But in situations like this, you’ve got to sit down and talk things out. I’m not sure how to get your wife to realize this or act more mature, but I do know that people who charge into things of this magnitude without thinking are the very ones who end up in my office for financial counseling or filing bankruptcy!

Four members of the Melrose Fire Department surprised the Cub Scouts of Melrose Pack 68 during their pack meeting on Monday, October 27th. The theme for the meeting was fire safety. The dens acted out skits dealing with different fire safety themes for around the home. The firemen spoke to the Cub Scouts after =each skit, adding to the information of home safety. The firemen also wore the gear used when fighting a fire. The boys were given the chance to check out the gear and even try wearing some of it after the meeting. Ashtyn Fiedler Spaghetti Dinner Benefit

A Spaghetti Dinner Benefit will be held for Ashtyn Fiedler, of New Munich on Saturday, December 6, from 4-9:00 p.m., at the Freeport Community Center.

After being hospitalized mid Sep-

tember, due to a respiratory virus, it was discovered that Ashtyn was born with CHD (two holes in her tiny heart.)

Since then, her family has been traveling between their home in New Munich and the U of M Children’s Hospital where Ashtyn is receiving care.

Ashtyn is currently battling a plethora of complications, an infection and waiting for her first open heart surgery, to repair an ASD and PDA. Her family is currently living at the Ronald McDonald House.

The dinner is a free will offering.

In addition, there will be a silent auction, Holiday music performed by local groups, DJ, children’s activities, and to meet Santa.

By Andy Carlson, DNR Fisheries Research Scientist Q: How can I tell when a lake has turned over in the fall, and do most fish go deeper after turnover?

A: A lake has turned over when water temperatures are the same from the surface to the bottom. The process can take days or even months to complete, depending on lake shape and depth, and air and water temperatures. The only way to conclusively know when a lake has turned over is to measure the temperature at the surface of the lake and at the bottom; if they are roughly the same temperature (within a few degrees), the lake has turned over. During the process of turnover water clarity may decrease, decaying organic material can be seen suspended in the water and there can be sulfurous odor.

Before lakes turn over in the fall, temperature and oxygen may vary across depths. In these lakes, the waters below a certain depth may become oxygen-deficient during the summer. When this happens, fish cannot use this habitat and are squeezed into waters near the surface. After the lakes turn over, the oxygen levels are consistent from the surface to the bottom, and fish can use depths that were uninhabitable during the summer. Studies of walleye, northern pike, muskellunge, and cisco that were tagged with depth sensors have verified that these species use deeper depths after turnover.

Knowledge is one thing. Knowing is quite another. We may know about someone and yet not know that one as a person. To know someone means taking a risk and becoming vulnerable.

David wanted to know God. Really know Him. So he prayed, “show me, teach me, lead me.” He was willing to take a risk! David wanted to come to know his Lord and the Lord of Life.

Notice how much there is in Psalm 24 verse four: When he asked God to “show him,” he was literally asking God to make Himself known to him. If we want to know God like David wanted to know God, it is necessary to begin with repentance and forgiveness. The gift of salvation is the first step in our knowledge of God. As our knowledge of Christ grows, we will begin to understand the meaning of salvation, we will become more knowledgeable about God’s love, mercy and grace.

Then he continued “teach me” Your paths. If we have repented, we will want God to show us the path that He wants us to take and follow Him wherever it leads. Jesus said, “I am the way.” He is not a way, but is the way and is always willing to teach us His way but we must be willing to listen to Him speak to us.

Finally he said, “Lead me in Your truth.” He realized that he was fallible prone to making the wrong choices. So, he was willing to admit that He needed God’s wisdom in place of his knowledge and that he needed His insights.

He willingly begged God to equip him for the life that God had planned for Him.

Local Municipality Minutes Grey Eagle Township November 3, 2014 These minutes are not approved.

Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus & Mike Rohe.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the October 6, 2014 minutes to the board.

Mike made the motion to approve the minutes as written. Ray made the second, all in favor. Minutes approved.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for October. Claims list included 9 claims for a total of $189,126.31; this included the cost of the 331 St. Ave. paving project. Ray made the motion to approve the claims; Mike made the second, Motion carried unanimously. Clerk shared mail received this month which consisted of advertising and Arvig’s newsletter.

Treasurer’s Report: Mary Ann Primus presented the treasurer’s report as follows: Beginning Balance: 13, $90,136.46; Deposits including interest: $26.99; Balance as of October 31, 2014: $164,829.62; Outstanding Deposit: 0.00; Outstanding Checks: 0.00; Cash Available: $164,829.62; CD Balance: $204,686.16.

Ray made the motion to accept the treasurer’s report. Second by Mike. All in favor, Motion carried.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported that a road was closed for one day for manure hoses. Discussion on the 116th run-off problems: two of the property owners were in attendance. Discussion included questions about whether a culvert would be necessary and where it should be placed. Also discussed which other property owners might be affected and who will notify them. Ray and Erv H. will speak with the property owner about placement of the culvert and cost.

Additional agenda items: Ron shared the variance notice received from Todd County. Mary Ann shared a letter about the sales and use tax that will take effect Jan. 1, 2015 in Todd County and a letter from Soil & Water about a change made at the County where they will now inform the townships of any changes to feedlots or new feedlots in Todd County. No response from the property owner with the posts in the road right of way, so the Board suggested sending a certified letter and contacting the Township Assoc. about possible next step.

Adjournment: Motion by Ray to adjourn the meeting. Mike made the second. Meeting adjourned at 8:55 p.m.

Frank Koopmeiners mentioned that water may be up due to flushing associated with the new water main

by West Walnut.

• Frank Koopmeiners will begin discharging the Pond this week.

• The Flags along Main Street have been taken down in preparation for Holiday decorations. The decorations will be lit by Thanksgiving night.

• The old school line was televised. The televising showed that there are large rocks stuck in the line. Frank Koopmeiners is looking into using a more powerful jetting machine to unclog the line.

Fire Department Report (Lange) • Fire Chief Jay Baggenstoss was present to discuss the purchase of extrication equipment which was paid for by contributions from the Fire Relief Association’s Annual Raffle. The new Hurst equipment will be faster and lighter, making any needed extrication safer and more efficient.

• Fire Chief Jay Baggenstoss also discussed the continued need for a new Water Truck. The Fire Department has formed a Fire Truck committee and plans to apply for the FEMA grant again. If grant funding does not come available, the department will look into purchasing. Jay will be present to discuss this option with the Fire Board at the Annual Meeting in March.

Recreation Board (Johnson) • Minutes were presented to the Council.

Unfinished Business: There was a short follow-up discussion about the 2014 League of Minnesota Cities Regional Meeting in Waite Park. The attending members of the Council found the meeting valuable and very well run.

New Business: City Engineer of SEH, Scott Hedlund, was present to discuss updates concerning the Walnut Avenue Improvements Project.

Scott Hedlund presented an Application for Payment No.2 to C&L excavating for 2014 Walnut Avenue Improvements. Motion made by Mayor Rollie Johnson and seconded by Council Member Joan Olson to approve the Application for Payment No.2 to C&L Excavating, Inc for 2014 Walnut Avenue Improvements. Motion carried unanimously.

Financial Report: Motion made by Council Member Brian Lange and seconded

by Council Member Joan Olson to renew the Public Fund Certificate 1013089 at Stearns Bank for 12 months at an interest rate of .65%.

S e n i o r Danica Hanson has been chosen as the October Swanville Student of the Month for grades 10-12. She is the daughter of Dan Hanson and Evelyn Hopko. “ K e r i e Thoma, Activities Director said, “I have worked with Danica in several different aspects over the years. She has always been an extremely hard working individual who has never hesitated to do what was asked of her. She enjoys helping whenever she can, and has a lot of pride in the work she does. Danica has always been a friendly student who gets along well with others and is respectful to classmates as well as adults. She is very deserving of this recognition.

Thoma adds, “Danica is one of those kids who will go out of her way to help someone. She has helped me start up a Pep Club at school, she has been an extremely good captain on our volleyball team and helps me with numerous tasks within the activities department, and she has a positive demeanor 24/7! She is so much fun to be around! I have watched her mature since she was in the seventh grade. I am always impressed how she gets along with her peers and teachers.

She is careful not to hurt anyone’s feelings, yet she has a way to make people laugh and feel good about themselves.

She uses her quick wit and sense of humor quite often to make others smile.

Danica is self-motivated and self-disciplined so others don’t have to worry if she will accomplish the task she starts. I have every confidence in the world that Danica will be successful in whatever she pursues in her future! Congrats to Danica Hanson on this very deserving award!”

Danica has many hobbies including volleyball, hanging with friends and sewing. She also enjoys reading and drawing. Danica plans to attend college, with a focus on a career in criminal justice.

Her school activities include playing volleyball and basketball since seventh grade, serving as a volleyball captain this year and a basketball captain as a junior. She has been on student council a number of years, serving this year as a class representative. She also participated in track grades seven through ten, softball as a junior, with plans to participate again this spring.

“Danica is very deserving of this award! I have known Danica and have had the wonderful opportunity to coach and teach her for the past six years,” states Char Bzdok, Science teacher.

“Not only is Danica a wonderful student and amazing athlete, she is a genuine and ethical young woman who her classmates trust and confide in. Danica is a former student of the month, has been selected as athlete of the month on multiple occasions and is consistently on the honor roll.

LPGE Elementary Students of the Month

Long Prairie/Grey Eagle Elementary School names October Students of the month.

Each SOTM winner receives a water bottle donated by Central Minnesota Credit Union, a personal pan pizza donated by Griff’s Pizza, an ice cream cone donated by Northern Star Cooperative Services-Cenex, a SOTM certificate and pencil.

Kindergarten: Brianna Lux is a quiet leader who leads by example every day in our kindergarten classroom. She is an excellent listener, she stays on task while working, and she completes her work to the best of her ability. Brianna always has a sunny, positive attitude and a willingness to try new things, both of which tend to rub off on everyone around her. She is kind and empathetic to all of her classmates. Her teacher appreciates her leadership each and every day, and can’t wait to see all of the great things she will accomplish!

(MR) Isaac Bruder is a natural leader. He always does what is expected of him and does his best. The other students admire him and follow his example. Isaac is a great role model for all. (MB) 2nd Grade: Jose Botello Becerra is a quiet leader. He leads by example and few words. The other students in the class look to him when they are unsure of what they are suppose to be doing. He is kind, helpful and always respectful. His teacher is positive he will be successful in 2nd grade because of all of his great skills and awesome positive attitude! (KL) William Peifer exemplifies what being a leader is all about. He is kind, on many occasions this year he has volunteered to give up his time to help someone who is in need.

He is thoughtful, his teacher hears him on a daily basis tell someone something nice about his or her behavior or their work. He is superorganized, he keeps his work area clean, and volunteers to help tidy up the classroom. He is a good student, his work is always done on time, and he participates in class. He does what is right, he sticks up for others when they have been bullied or treated unfairly. He has a great attitude; this person always wears a smile and has a positive attitude. Most of all, he is a friend to all, every one in his class seems to appreciate the way he treats them with respect. His teacher is proud to have him in his class. He has many friends because he is also caring and honest. (TS) Emilly Trigueros is a wonderful role model who sets a great example for all other students. She can often be found in the classroom guiding the other students on their assignments or leading others in what the classroom expectations are. Emilly is a born leader who leads others with kind words and a gentle heart. I feel very lucky to have had the privilege of getting to know Emilly in first grade and in third grade!

Emma Goertz was chosen for her leading qualities. She is always working hard and setting good examples for the student’s around her. When she is standing in the hall she is always ready to go and stand quietly.

This is a great example for the other students that stand around her. Not only has she shown better leadership qualities, she has shown great improvements in her work. She is such a great family member in our classroom family! (MM) 4th Grade: Tye Urman is a very respectful individual. He always respects all his teachers and peers. He is a very hard working young man and does his job every day he comes to class. This individual is a very honest person. He is a very cooperative and responsible student getting all his work done on time. He takes a lot of pride in his work and shows great leadership in and out of the classroom. He is a very mild mannered young man and is very easy going. (DZ) Rylee Sandy is a joy to have in the classroom. She is full of energy and shows up each day with a positive attitude. Her smile is infectious. She is very cooperative in the classroom. She gets along with her peers and the staff. She has a positive outlook on everything. She shows good leadership skills in the classroom and is always there to help other students when they need help. Her leadership skills have been very helpful in assisting others on their iPads if technical difficulties occur. She is a joy to be around and takes pride in her academics. (RM) Juan Raudales Ambriz demonstrates many qualities of being a good leader. The most important quality is that of caring for those around him. He often helps others with the little things, like picking up a dropped pencil or throwing away garbage for a friend with a broken arm so they don’t have to do it. Juan also demonstrates leadership by continuing to try when he encounters difficulty or asking questions to get clarification. He is always willing to work with anyone and cooperates to get things done. We are lucky to have Juan’s leadership in our classroom each day! (CB) 5th Grade: Tanner Lambrecht deserves this award for his outstanding efforts and leadership qualities displayed in and out of the classroom. and has a natural take charge personality. I consider him a leader of the class because he makes good choices even when others around him are not. He actively participates in band, school patrol, football and hockey. One day he hopes to be playing in the Super Bowl.

(MW) Lily Puck is one of the best models of Leadership I have seen. She is very helpful to others and respectful of her classmates and teachers. She is willing to stop what she is doing to help a friend. She has been an enthusiastic teacher with the iPads and wants to show new ways to use them. She leads by example.

As a leader, she does not have to be the center of attention. She is very humble and has a gentle spirit. Lily has a younger brother and sister. She is the oldest child in her family.

When she grows up she would like to be a teacher and a coach. In her spare time she enjoys swimming, tennis, basketball, playing piano, and reading. (CS) Alyssa Thelen is very deserving of student of the month. She is someone who leads by example. If you were to watch her, you would see that she is working hard, taking part in activities, helping others, and keeping a smile on her face. During the first quarter of school she never missed an assignment, she was always prepared for class. One of her favorite places to be is school, and with that attitude she makes our room a better place. (ML) 6th Grade: Emily Miller is an outstanding 6th grader that leads by example. This student always gives 100 percent in class and on all activities. After high school she would like to attend college to become an architect or animator. Some favorites from this young lady include Science and Language arts in school, reading books in his free time, pizza and playing with her sister. One future goal of this sixth grader is travel to at least 5 different continents. (MZ) Joe Langer is chosen because of his leadership in the classroom. Leadership means to show you can be a leader or a captain without being bossy. According to his classmates this student is a good example of this. One of his classmates said, “When working in a group, he kept all of us together. He made sure we got our work done and no one got left out.”

He is also good about having a positive attitude and encouraging others. His favorite subject in school is Phy Ed and when he is not in school, this student enjoys shooting hoops and riding four-wheelers. When he grows up, he wants to be a police officer. One life goal he has is to go to Hawaii. (BG) Weston Herzog was chosen for his dedication and leadership in the classroom. He is a very responsible and trustworthy independent learner, who takes pride in his education.

These qualities combined with his active participation create an animated, and engaging classroom environment day in and day out.

He is a quality example for his peers inside and outside of the classroom. He is a sociable, trustworthy friend who always wants to contribute. He stays on task in class, and uses exceptional cooperative learning skills.

His favorite food is steak, he aspires to be a professional football player, and hopes to eventually in his lifetime “drive some really cool cars.” One of his classmates while writing about him said, “He is someone to look up to.” These qualities make him the deserving recipient of this month’s award. Melrose nurse wins March of Dimes Nurse of the Year Award

Jennifer Tomford, R.N., CentraCare Health – Melrose, received the March of Dimes Nurse of the Year Award in the rural health category and was honored at the Oct. 25 annual Nurse of the

Year Award ceremony in Brooklyn Park, Minn. Tomford began her career at CentraCare Health – Melrose in 2000 as a certified nurse assistant.

CentraCare Health is partnering with the University of Minnesota to raise awareness on the health benefits of lowdose aspirin to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in a targeted population.

The “Ask About Aspirin” campaign is designed to educate our population on the benefits of this drug and to encourage people to ask their provider if aspirin is right for them. Aspirin helps to reduce clots in the blood that can cause heart attack and stroke to occur.

CentraCare Health-Sauk Centre to expand CentraCare Health – Sauk Centre plans to break ground in Spring 2015 on a 7,600-square-foot expansion to accommodate the patients of newly recruited physicians as well as those of visiting specialists.

The $1.7-million addition will feature 15 exam rooms – bringing the clinic’s total to 39 – when completed in late

• Village View is a 24 unit housing project for the elderly and disabled.

Mary Scott, R.N., CentraCare Health – Melrose, who nominated Jennifer for the award. “She is the lead of our hospital OB department and ensures we provide up-to-date and excellent care to our patients. She provides the prenatal information to clinic patients and teaches community childbirth preparation classes and adapts her program as needed to meet the needs of our population. Jenn works with laboring moms and also provides staff education.
