forgiveness. This is the key to having peace in all your relationships.”

We are living in a time when being offended is in fashion. It’s just too hard to let things go. We seem to have forgotten about forgiveness. Forgiveness requires people not to keep score, a human tendency when we feel we have been wronged.

Sadly, this tendency affects both our business and professional lives. If we have a problem with someone else being smarter, richer or more successful, working together becomes much more difficult. That doesn’t enhance cooperation in any arena.

Are you a grudge-holder? Do you go around making lists of everything that is unfair in the world? This age-old practice is linked to our evolutionary history, according to an article by Nando Pelusi in “Psychology Today” magazine, “Injustice Collecting.”

Nando says that it’s particularly difficult to let go of grudges because there are high emotional payoffs. This, he says, is a sensible motive because our ancestors had a huge investment in making sure they got their fair share in the ancient world – a place where unfairness could result in the death of you and all the people in your voluntary collective.

This gives humans a reason to be hyper-

vigilant when it comes to uncovering cheaters or swindlers.

Injustice collecting, however, entails more than resentment toward those who are benefiting unjustly. It is, as Nando points out, resentment building on a mass scale. We become outraged when the world isn’t absolutely fair, and this can lead to unending anger, hopelessness and depression. It is also a way to avoid responsibility for our personal circumstances. But how do we change something that seems to be so hard-wired into our systems? Nando makes these suggestions for giving up a grudge and moving on: • Make a list of injustices. Write down the things that weigh on your mind. This will get your mind to focus in a productive way.

• Stop thinking in all-or-nothing terms. Ask yourself whether the injustice you are experiencing has to affect all aspects of your life. Try to see how the injustice might help you find a new direction or live in a different and better way.

• Ask yourself if your life can still be meaningful – despite the injustice. If not, Nando says you have to realize you are making a choice to refuse to get over something.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne The House World War II resulted in some problems for those on the farm.

The rationing of fuel and rubber were more obvious, but there were also restrictions regarding h o u s i n g .

Sometimes solutions were created to circumvent these problems.

My Dad needed to build a house.

The limit on residential construction was $900.00. That amount of money didn’t build a house, even in those days.

Dad needed more cropland, plus he needed a house. This was his solution.

Dad bought 136 acres with a 3 story house on it. There were also some outbuildings that he needed. The property was ¼ mile from his original farm, so the farm out-buildings could be moved without dis-assembly.

Investment in farm land was an acceptable expenditure. The buildings were moved and crops were planted in the farmland.

A hole was dug where the house was to be located. The hole was bordered with concrete and divided in half - half being cellar and the other half being cistern. A footing of concrete was created around the parameter of the

proposed structure. Although the lower level and the trench for the footing were dug with a shovel, there was already a financial investment in the concrete for proposed house.

The house on the new property was disassembled and the building materials were used to create the new house. There was no plumbing or electrical wiring in the new house, but the shingles and siding did use up the $900.00. To offset the financial limitation, the upstairs level was used as a granary. It was not very convenient to carry gunny sacks full of grain up a ladder to the second floor, but that is how it was done.

The house was about 20 foot by 36 foot. It had a 6x6 entry on the front. A third of the house consisted of a bedroom with a closet. Another third was the living room with a large heating stove.

The final third was a kitchen with a sink and pantry. It’s warmth came from the wood cook stove in the kitchen and the living room furnace, which would make an explosion of smoke about every two months. After the big puff of smoke, the curtains and all the walls had to be washed. It didn’t make Mother happy.

The home is now 74 years old and it appears to be as structurally sound as it was originally.

• Will being upset change your situation? Ask yourself this question if you seem stuck in a quagmire of your own anger.

• Frame your situation accurately.

Is something really unfair – or just annoying? Keeping perspective is key if you want to move on.

• Realize that you are going to come across unfair situations. Make a decision how you will handle these circumstances in the future.

• Question how much this matter will affect you in the grand scheme of things. Try not to fall victim to the temptation of wallowing in grief over something that just doesn’t matter that much.

While a Zen master was away one day, a cleaning lady came to tidy up his house. As she was dusting, she accidentally knocked over his favorite vase and it smashed into a million pieces. The cleaning lady was horrified and didn’t know what to do.

had broken his vase. When the master returned she showed him what she had done and begged his forgiveness.

The master said, “Do not worry, dear lady, I bought that vase for pleasure, not pain.”

I like the advice in this Arabic proverb: “Write the wrongs that are done to you in sand, but write the good things that happen to you on a piece of marble.

Let go of all emotions such as resentment and retaliation, which diminish you, and hold onto the emotions, such as gratitude and joy, which increase you.”

Mackay’s Moral: Forgive. Forget.

Stearns County Sheriff’s Office

Jail Phone Scam: The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office has received several reports of phone scams in the past few days. Area residents are receiving calls from scammers acting as Stearns County Sheriff’s Office employees and the call is coming from a Stearns County Sheriff’s Office phone number. The scammer is stating a relative is in jail and needs money. These calls are scams and should be ignored. If you have further concerns, please contact our Office at 320251-4240.

Scams Galore: Unfortunately, this newsletter has a plethora of stories on scams and fraud. You might be wondering, “How many scam calls does the Sheriff’s Office take in a week?” Over the last few months, the average would be approximately 4-5.

With every passing day these scammers come up with new and inventive ways to cheat people out of their money.

On April 18th, Deputy Paul Orvis took a call regarding an email the victim received.

They reported it appeared to come from their parish priest who was asking for gift cards to help out people in need. Wanting to help, the victim purchased two $100.00 Google gift cards. They were then asked to text the card numbers to the “solicitor.” They sent one but the other one had not been activated so they couldn’t. When they checked later, they found out the email was fraudulent and the money request was a scam.

Also on April 18th, Deputy Andrew Struffert took an attempted fraud and computer hacking report in Rockville. The intended victim was on their computer trying to purchase airline tickets through Delta Airlines. He received a phone call from a party saying they were with Delta. The caller said they were experiencing problems with their computers but they could help the victim with his ticket purchase. They also mentioned a promotion that would save the victim some money. The victim provided his credit card number and personal information to the caller to make the purchase. The victim realized this was a scam and canceled his credit card. Deputy Struffert tried to call the number of the scammers and was asked to purchase gift cards. Deputy Struffert did not do so and tried to engage the scammers.

They eventually hung up on him. On April 24th, another familiar scam was reported and we’ve mentioned this scam in past newsletters. We want to talk about it again to highlight how fast things can go wrong. The victim was contacted and advised a vehicle registered to her was involved in a drug and fraud crime in Texas. She was instructed to provide funds via gift cards or an arrest warrant would be issued for her. She purchased gift cards in the amount of $23,000. They were purchased from a variety of stores.

Two of the stores cautioned her before proceeding that this was likely a scam or fraud issue. The fear these scammers are able to instill can cause victims like this to take action and do things they normally would not do. The victim is now out the money. The victim also had shredded the cards before contacting the Sheriff’s Office so investigators were unable to track them. The calling number was an internet phone and not traceable.

Remember: Warrants are not issued this way and law enforcement does not take gift cards as payment. Contact us if you are concerned about a call or think it might be a scam. It is far better to ask a few questions then potentially losing thousands of dollars.

Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash: May 3rd, 2019: At 6:54 p.m., the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a call of a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of County Road 3 and Norway Road in St. Wendel Township near St. Joseph.

According to Sheriff Steve Soyka, a 2005 Toyota Tundra, driven by Jonathan Grace, 46, of St. Joseph, was westbound on Norway Road when it struck a southbound 2017 Ford Expedition in the driver’s side door. The occupant of the Expedition, Stacy Meyer, 54, of Freeport, was transported to the St. Cloud Hospital by Mayo Ambulance.

Grace sustained minor injuries in the crash. Meyer passed away while at the St. Cloud Hospital. Both drivers were wearing seat belts. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. St. Joseph Police Department and St. Joseph Fire Department assisted.

Obituaries Stacy Jo Meyer

Stacy Jo Meyer of Freeport, Minnesota, passed away on May 4, 2019 at the St. Cloud Hospital as a result of a motor vehicle accident.

Stacy was born on November 10, 1967 to Ervin and Darlene (Bergmann) Schiffler.

She grew up on Big Birch Lake raising horses, snowmobiling, ice skating, boating, and bringing in stray animals. She graduated from Melrose Senior High School, did her undergraduate work at Winona State University, received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Minnesota, and was also a Certified Diabetes Educator. She married Barry Meyer in Melrose on August 20, 1994.

They welcomed three incredible children into their lives, Colton, Drake, and Mia. Stacy was the ultimate wife, mother, sister, daughter, friend and community member. She consistently and tirelessly worked hard to make the world a better place. She was her children’s biggest fan and reveled in watching them play football, basketball, baseball, and volleyball. She taught her children to work hard, have fun, and make a positive impact on the people in their lives. She truly led by example.

With her friends, she enjoyed running races, riding motorcycles, taking vacations, taking brewery tours, and spending quality time with friends and family. She enjoyed watching DIY shows, doing remodeling projects, hanging out at the lake and in the kitchen with family and friends. She always included everyone in her quest for joy and making memories.

Stacy co-owned the Melrose and Long Prairie Pharmacies and provided compassion, caring, and counseling for the communities as well as the patients of CentraCare hospital in Melrose. She also chose to operate Schiffler’s Liquor in St. Anthony after her father, Erv, passed away. She was someone who could get along and laugh with everyone, so the bar patrons loved her.

Stacy is survived, loved and celebrated by her husband Barry; children Colton, Drake, and Mia; brother Dean (Carla) Schiffler of Lakeville; sister-in-law Shana Schiffler of Waconia; in-laws Roy and Susie Meyer, Micki Gilmer and Joe Church of Mound. She also leaves behind nine adored and loved nieces and nephews: Matt, Tyler and Kaley Schiffler, Gabrielle, Nate, Isaac and Eli Schiffler, and Luke and Jake Gilmer, as well as many other relatives and friends.

Stacy is welcomed to heaven by her loving parents Erv and Darlene Schiffler; brother Wes Schiffler; grandparents Wilfred and Ann Schiffler and John and Hilda Bergmann.

This world would be a better place if we all lived as Stacy did. She filled every day with joy and spread love to everyone around her. She truly listened to others, opened doors to anyone needing a friend, and radiated love and compassion. Everyone who came in contact with her came away feeling uplifted and appreciated. Stacy lived a short, but very full life. She fully lived every day she was blessed with, and her family and friends were even more blessed to share those days with her.

Bob was born on August 20, 1938 in St. Cloud to Robert John and Eleanor

(Machtemes) Thielman. He was a very active member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church and the Albany Knights of Columbus. Bob worked as a cement finisher for over 40 years before retiring in 2001. He married Margaret C. Backes on June 24, 1967 at St. Benedict’s Church in Avon. Bob enjoyed photography, walking, biking, woodworking, cooking, baking and St. John’s University (Johnnie) Football games. He also enjoyed spending sunny summer afternoons on his pontoon on Middle Spunk Lake and his daily 4 PM glass of wine with his wife, Margaret. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Margaret Thielman of Avon; children, Dayna (Dan) Rea of Avon and Troy Thielman of Mound; grandchildren, Ian Rea, Devin (Nic) Gertken, Griffin Rea, and Nolan Rea; great grandson, Eli Gertken; siblings, LeRoy (Patty) Thielman of Las Cruces, NM, Kate (John) Frye of St. Paul, Jim Thielman of Holman, WI, LuAnn (Dan) Hufstedler of Maple Grove; and niece, Melissa Thielman.

R i c h a r d A. “Dick” Oevermann, age 85 of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Monday, May 6, 2019 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 10 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Dan Walz officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

April 27, 1963 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Dick farmed north of Melrose until his retirement in 2008.

He was a member and usher at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and was a member of Catholic United Financial. Dick was an avid outdoorsman who loved ice fishing, spearing, summer fishing, and deer hunting. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends at Linda B’s on “Holy Tuesday” and on Friday’s as well. Dick was a huge fan of the Melrose Dutchmen basketball team and in his younger years enjoyed playing baseball, softball, and bowling. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his sons, Karl (Petra) Oevermann of Freeport and Corey (Tina) Oevermann of Freeport; three grandchildren, Chase, Autumn, and Sarah Oevermann; brothers and sisters, Albert Oevermann of Melrose, Kitty Mueller of Melrose, Donald Oevermann of Melrose, Dorothy Schmitz of Brooten, and Joseph Oevermann of Melrose.

Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Oevermann; parents; sister, Edna Middendorf; brothers-in-law, Edward Mueller, Leonard Schmitz, and Ralph Middendorf; and sisters-in-law, Kathy Oevermann and Ilene Oevermann.

Joseph H. “Joe” Boeckers Joseph H. “Joe” Boeckers, age 66 of Upsala, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A visitation will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 11 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. A private family burial will take place at a later date in Immaculate Conception Cemetery in New Munich.

Joseph Hildebrand Boeckers was born March 4, 1953 in Melrose, Minnesota to Arnold and Lorraine (Hoeschen) Boeckers.

He was the third of nine children. Joe graduated from Melrose High School in 1971. After high school Joe enlisted in the Army and served as a mechanic in Germany.

He received the Battallion Certificate of Achievement for outstanding performance of

duty in preventative maintenance. Following his service, Joe was in the Army National Guard. Joe continued his love of farming when he purchased his own farm 1 ½ miles East of Upsala. Joe also worked various jobs outside of his farm.

Joe loved to spend time with his family.

He also had a passion for farming. Joe enjoyed fishing, playing cards, bowling, and being in the outdoors. He was always willing to stop his own work and help out someone else in need.

Survivors include his daughters, Laura (Jason) Moening of Freeport and Rebecca (Eric) Kingston of Tioga, ND; four grandchildren, Noah and Grace Moening and Amanda and Julia Kingston; and siblings, Carol Schneider of St. Cloud, Judy (David) Nelson of Monticello, Jim (Diane) Boeckers of New Munich, Irene (Donald) Lieser of Meire Grove, Marilyn McDonald of Richland, WA, and Lois (Tim) Matti of Blaine.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Lorraine Boeckers; sister, Sandy Boeckers; and brother, Marvin Boeckers.

Todd County Sheriff’s Office

May 5, 2019: At 15:08 the Todd County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Sauk Centre Fire Department responded to a report of a grass fire at the address of 11107 Alexander Loop. After arrival, it was determined that a male individual (age 76) was severely burned in the fire. Sauk Centre Ambulance was paged and responded. Sauk Centre Ambulance transported the victim to the Sauk Centre Hospital. The victim later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The victim was Heinrich Wurdak.

The following were the types of calls: 73 traffic stops, 49 civil process, 6 suspicious activity type complaints, 5 phone scams, 4 alarms, 5 thefts, 4 disturbances, 8 assist other agencies, 5 accidents, 3 traffic complaints, and 3 domestics. Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I’ll be retiring in the next couple of years. When I leave my job, we will have a yearly income of $65,000 through my pension. I don’t think we need an emergency fund with such a dependable, steady income stream like that, but my wife disagrees.

She says she would feel safer if we had money set aside just for the unexpected.

What do you think we should do?

-Gary Dear Gary, A good pension can feel pretty solid, but nothing’s perfect. Nothing lasts forever. There’s always the possibility of lost income or large, unexpected expenses. What if one of you has a major medical event? Life can bite you at any time, and sometimes it will take a big financial chunk out of you. You need an emergency fund!

I recommend an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses. Put it in a good money market account with check writing privileges and a decent interest rate. That way, your money will work for you a little bit. With a solid pension like you’re talking about, you could probably lean toward the three-month side, if you wanted. Honestly though, I’d save up six months of expenses—just in case.

Trust me, a fully funded emergency fund will make you both feel better. Plus, it can turn a disaster into nothing more than an inconvenience!

Dear Dave, The school system I work for puts 12 percent of my pay into a public teacher retirement fund, and they match this amount. I’ve seen where you tell people to put 15 percent of their income toward retirement. If that’s the case, should I put three percent into another retirement fund? I have no debt and very little in terms of expenses. Or, what would you think about the idea of opening another retirement account at a full 15 percent of what I make?

-Patti Dear Patti, I wouldn’t go as far as to pour an additional 15 percent into a different retirement plan, but I would consider putting maybe eight to 10 percent into a Roth IRA. I want you to have some money that’s separate from the school system account, just in case things go south with their retirement fund.

It sounds like you’ve got a pretty good pension plan, but you never know what might happen. I’m not predicting bad things, but at the same time there’s no way I’d lean on the school system fund as my one and only source of retirement income. You should never put all your financial eggs in one basket!

Yet, it follows that those who refuse to obey the laws of God will ultimately be punished for their disobedience. Perhaps they will get away with it here, but certainly not in the “hereafter.”

“God presides in the great assembly,” wrote Asaph, the author of Psalm 82. And he concluded, “He gives judgment among the ‘gods’.” In other words, if those whom God has placed in positions of leadership as rulers or judges do not rule with God’s laws and commandments as their guide they will face His judgment.

Not long ago, one ruler who was dying cried out, “Now I must face the Judge. This is what disturbs me.” We, too, must face this Judge. What will we face on that day?

Dear Motor Medics, I have a question about antifreeze. I have not owned a car more than 7 years until now and I would like to know if I need to do something with my coolant. The shop I have gone to for the past two years has been trying to get me to flush the system but they are not really giving me a reason other than it’s time due to miles and age. I did have it checked to make sure it won’t freeze up in the winter and it looks clean so why would I need to change it?

-Devon in Larchwood, Iowa Dear Devon, We are so glad you asked this question because many people are unaware of how to take care of their cooling systems and that can lead to very expensive repairs. The antifreeze serves several purposes. It is there to prevent freeze-up, boil-over, and to assist in the prevention of extremely damaging rust and corrosion in the cooling system.

Even though coolant looks good and passes a freeze test it may fail a PH test.

If the coolant does not have the proper PH rust and corrosion can damage gaskets, the radiator, and heater core, or scale can form in the passages. Test strips used during yearly checkups at a shop will verify the PH and need for changing which usually falls somewhere in the two to five year range. Changing it can save you money.

Since I usually buy on impulse, I’m not likely to get a pre-purchase inspection done and I know you guys strongly suggest one. What can I do to make sure I get a good car?

While no inspection can guaranty a trouble-free car, it can eliminate many commonly found money robbing issues that consumers could possibly get stuck with when buying a used car. I would suggest that if you don’t get the inspection try to buy from a reputable lot that may offer at least a shortterm warranty or sale contingent on a passing inspection. Also look for lots offering pre inspected cars. Many of the credible lots do an outstanding job of pre-inspecting vehicles to keep their customer satisfaction high and will be able to tell you what they have checked over.

Swanville City April 2, 2019 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, April 2, 2019. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Jim Molitor, Deb Wood, Norm Carlson, and Tony Maciej. Also present: Jeremy Boots, John Gessell Sr, reporter Sheila McCoy. Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting Tuesday, March 5, 2019 were reviewed. A motion was made by Deb Wood to approve the minutes. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by Norm Carlson to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

John Gessell Sr. was present to discuss with council land to the north of his property. Gessell stated he would like to build a garage and is unsure how much land he would need at this time. Jim Molitor made a motion to sell land to John Gessell Sr., the price and amount of land will be discussed at a later date, the garage will have to be built one year from date of sell. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The cul-de-sac was discussed at the end of North Berkey Avenue. Council decided class 5 will be put down and crushed rock added on top. The work will be done by Maciej Construction.

There are two maple trees on an empty lot by North Berkey Avenue which the maintenance man would like. Norm Carlson made a motion to approve letting maintenance man Lonny take them at no charge with the removal being paid by Lonny. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Astech agreement for street sweeping was presented to council. The agreement was put on hold at this time.

Resolution #19-0402A was presented to council. The resolution states there is a $200.00 donation from the Swanville Women’s Civic Club to be used toward the flowers on main street. Tony Maciej made a motion to accept resolution #19-0402A from the Women’s Club. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Resolution #19-0402B was presented to council. The resolution states there is a $200.00 donation from the Swanville Women’s Civic Club to be used toward the maintenance of the Swan River Water Trail. Deb Wood made a motion to accept resolution #190402B from the Women’s Club.

Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

A list of authorization from Morrison County Public Works was presented to the council.

Council decided to authorize Lonny Hutchins, CR Peterson and Tony Maciej to charge on the MC Public Works account.

The City Clerk/Treasurer presented council with an estimate to update the city computer to Windows 10. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to have the city computer updated to Windows 10. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The Local Board of Appeal will meet Thursday, April 11 at 9:00 a.m. in the Swanville Center.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the claims. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. in the Swanville Center.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Tony Maciej and seconded by Deb Wood to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Randy Mettler, Nicholas Mettler and Erv Herdering were also present.

Supervisors have discussed purchasing a ditch mower for the township to use. After getting several bids, Sup. Johnson made a motion to purchase a weed/brush cutter with roller attachment from Skid Pro. Sup. Berscheit seconded the motion and upon vote motion passed.

As part of the reorganization after the annual meeting and election Sup. Berscheit made a motion

A resident was concerned about the flooded ditch of State 28 and 170th St. Board will contact state highway department to see if culvert should be there.

Paul S. Petermeier

Paul S. Petermeier, age 60 of Big Lake, formerly of Greenwald and Melrose, passed away unexpectedly from cardiac arrest on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at his home in Big Lake, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 9 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. A family inurnment will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Thursday at the church.

Paul Steven Petermeier was born February 17, 1959 in Melrose, Minnesota to Elmer and Dolores (Schmidt) Petermeier. Paul graduated from Melrose High School and St. Cloud Technical College. He was united in marriage to Constance “Connie” Kraemer on June 18, 1988 at Saint Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald. Paul was the owner/operator of Paul’s Auto Body in Melrose and also worked for a short time at Kraft Foods. He became employed as an insurance adjuster which Paul loved doing. He loved the drives to his territories and would even take an eleven-hour detour to see his son in Paul’s favorite state of Colorado.

He was a member of Mary of Visitation Catholic Church in Big Lake. Paul enjoyed

driving, hunting, and spending time with his family. He loved watching all sports, especially his favorite team – the Green Bay Packers. Paul had a knack for memorizing dates, whether it be historical events, family memories, or other irrelevant events.

Survivors include his wife, Connie Petermeier of Big Lake; children, Preston (Lindsay) Petermeier of Bartow, Florida and Emma Petermeier of St. Louis Park; brother, Jerry (Josie) Petermeier of St. Louis Park; and sisters, Bonnie (Ron) Boeckermann of Arden Hills and Jolane Schmidt of Shoreview.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Kenneth Petermeier.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Wide budget gap to bridge before Legislature adjourns

No fewer than eight conference committees are scheduled to meet this week at the Capitol.

They are sandwiched around floor sessions each day in both the House and Senate. Custom has at least one member of the minority party named to each of these conference committees. It’s also custom that if one wants to be selected to serve on a conference committee, they should also vote for that particular bill on final passage in each body.

A bit of a dust-up occurred when conferees were named for the Jobs and Energy Conference Committee. Not one Republican was selected, which went against long-standing tradition. I don’t think any of our members voted for the bill as it left the House, but we were still assured that we’d be represented.

What’s even more telling is that of the five DFL members named to the conference committee, all five reside in either Hennepin or Ramsey counties.

So much for having a Greater Minnesota voice helping to determine the final make-up of this important piece of legislation! One other rather unusual feature of these DFL conferees is that three of them are freshmen legislators in their very first year of service. Being a freshman and being named to a confer-

ence committee is unusual, but having three on one committee is something I’ve never before seen.

We met the deadline of having all the major finance bills finished in both Houses by May 1. The next deadline – and the one that’s really important – was set for Monday, May 6. That’s when joint spending targets are supposed to be agreed upon for all the finance bills.

That means the House, the Senate and Gov. Tim Walz are to have reached agreement on the amount of new spending and new taxes or tax cuts. I think this key goal is going to be important to achieve because it sets the stage for all the bills to be finalized. When one knows exactly how much can be spent, you just have to prioritize where it goes.

Same thing with taxes. When you know how much tax revenue is coming in, that’s in effect the bottom line, and tells where those spending targets can be set.

There are so many major differences between the bills passed in the two chambers. The House DFL transportation bill calls for that infamous 20-cent gas tax increase. The Senate says that’s a non-starter. The House has other major increases in spending, along with sweeping policy changes, that don’t have companion language in the Senate.

These are major policy changes, such as paid family leave, gun control, driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants, and sex education for students as young as elementary age.

It’s going to take a great deal of compromise by all parties involved to reach agreement by May 20, the date

May is Stroke Awareness Month

Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability and fifth for death in the United States, according to the American Stroke Association. Approximately 795,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke each year, killing nearly 130,000 of them.

Strokes occur when a blood vessel carrying oxygen and vital nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or ruptures. When this occurs, part of the brain is deprived of blood and oxygen, destroying millions of valuable nerve cells within minutes.

The resulting damage can lead to significant disability including paralysis, speech problems and emotional difficulties. Treatment may be available if you get to the emergency room immediately upon recognition of stroke symptoms.

Unfortunately, only 25 percent of patients experiencing an acute stroke seek immediate medical treatment reports the article in the Journal of American Heart Association, “Reducing the Delay Between Stroke Onset and Hospital Arrival: Is It an Achievable Goal?”

Buffers on DNR Protected Waters and Public Ditches Most Todd County landowners know vegetative buffers were required on public waterways November 1, 2017 and on county ditches by November 1, 2018. This is very important considering Todd County spans out over almost 1,000 square miles, has 123 public lakes, 380 miles of public streams, and 379 miles of county ditches.

Todd County SWCD has completed a county wide buffer inventory on all public waters and public ditches. Many landowners have already contacted the SWCD and have installed compliant buffers. If buffer compliance is not observed, Todd County will assess fees to the property owner.

Todd County SWCD recognizes that in 2018 cold temperatures and early snowfall are to be considered when requiring buffer compliance. Due to this, the SWCD is offering funding for those who were unable to install buffers in the fall of 2018. A payment of $300 per acre of required buffer installed is available to landowners who are currently non-compliant. The deadline to sign up for buffer funding is May 31st, 2019.

Todd County is making excellent progress toward being compliant with the state buffer initiative, but there is still some work to be done. If you feel buffers on your property may be affected or if you have any questions regarding buffers in Todd County, please contact the SWCD at 320-732-2644.

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz Jesus has the Keys – Revelation 1:18 We have keys to everything nowadays and there are two basic reasons we lock things up. The first is to keep people out, the second is to keep people in. Whereas most building locks won’t keep a determined person out; prison locks are built to keep criminals in and are solid and secure and look more like a vault door than a house door.

In the first chapter of revelation Jesus tells us that he is alive, He died and behold is now alive, and furthermore he has the keys of Death and Hades. Keys to keep people in or out? Like our keys (regardless of effectiveness) the bearer of the keys controls access. Without the keys you can’t get into something or are not supposed to get into that place.

The locks on Death and Hades are built to work. Imagine if we could break down the door of death with a simple kick? If that was the case we wouldn’t need a savior, we’d just break down the door and avoid death all together. Break some glass and you are out. Too bad hell is locked up more like Alcatraz and Jesus has the keys.

We deceive ourselves if we think that we can avoid death or the consequence of our sin through our own efforts. Jesus had to die on the cross because sin demands death. Time is different to God so when Jesus lay dead in the tomb those three days it was as if he was dead for an eternity. With his task complete Jesus is given life by the Father and now stands with the keys to Death and Hades itself.

What comfort is it to us to know that Jesus is the one who unlocks and re-locks the door to death and hell? Because of our sin we are sentenced to death and hell. As we receive the consequence of our transgression we rightfully arrive at the gates of hell and there is Jesus with the Keys, judge of the living and the dead. For the believer we find our Savior who knows us and gave his life for ours. He has promised eternal life to all who believe in him so opening and locking us up in Hades is not his plan. Rather through him we gain eternal life.

How divine is it that the one who controls the access to Death and Hell is the only one who has been there and left again? The great thing about Easter and the Resurrection is that it clearly proclaims to us that God plans to break his children free from the curse of death and hell. Even though the events of Holy Week seem out of control, God is in control. Jesus has the control and he showed us that when he rose from the
