Adversity is the springboard to great achievement
By Harvey Mackay To understand adversity, take two acorns from the same tree, as nearly alike as possible – and plant them in two separate locations. Plant one on a hill by itself and the other in a dense forest. The oak standing alone is exposed to every storm. Its roots grow deep in every direction, grasping every rock to support itself from the threatening elements. The acorn planted in the dense forest grows up a weak, willowy sapling. Since it was shielded by its neighboring oak trees, it feels no need to spread its roots far and wide for support. Don’t be afraid of adversity. Welcome it! Adversity makes you stronger. It helps you grow. I recently returned from the annual Horatio Alger Awards in Washington, DC. These awards are named after Horatio Alger Jr., whose tales of overcoming adversity through unyielding perseverance and basic moral principles captivated the public in the late 19th century. Each year the Horatio Alger
Association selects and honors approximately 10 individuals who have triumphed over adversity with the virtues of hard work, honesty, individual initiative, adherence to goals and community leadership. I am honored to have been inducted into this prestigious organization in 2004. The mission of the association is about promoting success and extending a helping hand to others. This year we awarded scholarships to 106 students, who, in the face of great adversity, have exhibited an admirable commitment to continuing their education and serving their communities. I am proud that the Horatio Alger Association has become one of the nation’s largest providers of privatelyfunded, need-based scholarships. 2014 marked the 30th anniversary of the scholarship program, which has awarded more than $100 million to more than 21,000 students. My good friend Lou Holtz, Hall of Fame college football coach, always says, “Show me someone who has done something worthwhile, and I’ll show you someone who has overcome adversity.” Adversity is a fact of life. It can’t be controlled. Problems and people can’t stop you. The only thing that can stop you is YOU. Only you can control how you react to adversity. When faced with adversity, do you buckle beneath
the weight of it all? Ask “Why me?” D o l l y Parton said, “The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.” Here is a sampling of Horatio Alger Award recipients who turned adversity into an advantage. • Author and poet Maya Angelou was three years old when her parents separated. She was raped at the tender age of seven and as a result became a mute for nearly six years. She has published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, plus many plays, movies and television shows. • Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and his family were forced to leave Germany in the 1930s due to the Nazi movement. He ended up in New York City and couldn’t speak English. He entered the U.S. Army and returned to earn his bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D from Harvard. • Carol Burnett, actress, comedian, Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

Obituaries Jean M. “Jeanne” Timp Jean M. “Jeanne” Timp, age 71 of Grey Eagle, died peacefully after an extended illness on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 5 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. Interment was at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Sauk Centre. Jean Marie Determan was born June 7, 1942 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to George and Eleanor (Zirbes) Determan. She graduated from the Sauk Centre High School and from the Minnesota School of Business. She was united in marriage to Arthur Timp on May 26, 1962 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Jeanne was employed by Crown Auto Stores and Lil’ Red Grocery Store in Eden Prairie, Chanhassen State Bank in Chanhassen, Belvidere Blackhawk Bank in Belvidere, IL, and by the State of Minnesota Department of Child Welfare and the State of Minnesota Conservation Department. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa. Jeanne enjoyed cooking and loved
spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband, Arthur Timp of Grey Eagle; children, Lisa (Glen) Simons of Willmar, David (Sherry) Timp of Delano, and Paul (Dawn) Timp of St. Michael; grandchildren, Justin and Jessica Simons, Mitchell, Michael, Amanda, Abby, and Allie Timp; step-grandchildren, Cole, Jake, and Tucker Anderly; brothers and sisters, Vergie (Frank) Weiss of Gilbert, Bernie Jernigan of Vienna, Virginia, Jerry (Donna) Determan of Fairmont, Bea (Vince) Decker of Excelsior, Dorothy Pulkka of Anoka, Louann Burns of Aberdeen, Maryland, Jim (Ann) Determan of Blaine, Robert (Doris) Determan of Cold Spring, Dan (Sharon) Determan of Emily, and David (Jill) Determan of Grey Eagle. Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents, George and Eleanor Determan; brother, Ralph Determan; sister, Evelyn Evens; and brothers-in-law, Ed Jernigan, Dick Pulkka, and Ray Evens. Serving as casket bearers were Justin Simons, Mitchell Timp, Michael Timp, Ryan Zierden, Jason Timp, and Chris Determan. Cross bearers were Amanda Timp, Abby Timp, and Allie Timp and scripture bearer was Jessica Simons. Gift bearers were Lisa Simons, David Timp, and Paul Timp, and the lector was Sharon Determan. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon for Allen “Al” W. Dahlin who died Saturday at the St. Cloud Hospital. The Rev. Blane Wasnie, O.S.B. officiated and burial was in the parish cemetery. Al was born August 29, 1934 in Meeker County to Alfred and Maggie (Wortz) Dahlin. He married his high school sweetheart, Alma Schmidt, on August 1, 1953 at St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Luxemburg. Al started working in the grocery business at the age of 17 and continued with his purchase of Dahlin’s Supermarket in Avon. He was proud to be family owned. After his retirement from Dahlin’s Supermarket, Al started driving for Executive Express; he loved his job because he could shoot the breeze while staying busy. Al and Alma enjoyed playing daily cribbage games and traveling; making it to all 50 states in their motorhome. He was a man of many ideas; and was not afraid to try new things. He taught his children to get involved in their community. Al started many community activities for his children; Swedish Festival in Cambridge, women’s volleyball in
Avon, Chamber of Commerce of Avon, and Spunktacular Days. He was sarcastic and quick witted, but everyone’s friend when they needed one. Family meant the world to Al, and he often showed his love by supporting his family. He will be dearly missed. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Alma of Albany; children, Daniel of Avon, Michael (Victoria) of Braham, Jacqueline Dahlin Girard of Albany, JoAnn “Joi” (Gary) Schommer of St. Cloud, Christopher (Susan) of Thief River Falls, Robin “Rob” (Amy) of Japan; 13 grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, greatly anticipating the birth of his 18th great-grandchild; and 11 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Margaret and Elizabeth; and brother, Melvin.

late nights running his business. Over the years, he was involved in many civic and business organizations. Later in life, his five grandchildren were his pride and joy and he loved to do anything with them. He didn’t miss a chance to attend countless church programs and sporting events. He also enjoyed playing cards with the guys, driving around and looking at the crops, trips to South Dakota, walking his dogs, and spending lots of time with his family. Ron will be remembered as a great family man and a mentor to many guys at the fertilizer plant. He was quick to say “good job” and give a pat on the back to many a young kid. All of Ron’s employees were very important to him. He will be sadly missed by Nancy, his wife of 46 years; mother, Lydia Jeske of Springfield; daughters, Alyssa (Joe) Rosenberger of Melrose, Amber (Fred) Middendorf of Chaska, and Adrea (Tim) Mauseth of St. Louis Park; brother, Doug Jeske of Springfield; five beloved grandchildren, Maddie, Jacob, Isaac, Gavin, and Wyatt; one niece; three nephews; and many other relatives and good friends. Ronald A. Jeske, age 66, of Melrose, died Friday, May 2, 2014 at Quiet Oaks Hospice House in Luxemburg, surrounded by his family after a three year fight with lung cancer. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 5 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose. Pastor Kevin Mann officiated and burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery in Melrose. Ronald Albert Jeske was born September 30, 1947 in Springfield, Minnesota. He graduated from Springfield High School and went on to attend South Dakota State University in Brookings and then graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Agriculture. He married Nancy Friesen on July 20, 1968 in Springfield, MN. They had three daughters. Ron was a salesperson for US Steel, vo-tech teacher, and fertilizer plant manager before moving to Melrose and building Melrose Fertilizer in 1976. He loved spending many early hours and

Do you really want my opinion? I don’t think you do, but here goes. I’ll tell you ahead of time— it’s not going to be pretty! Basically, you’ve told me that you’re having money troubles and at the same time you’re throwing money out the window. You can tell yourself that it’s only a buck or two if you want, but that little bit of money represents a lot of financial irresponsibility in your life. You’re thinking somebody has to win, right? Well, let me tell you something. You’re more likely to be hit by lightning five times and survive than you are to win the lottery. Five times! How many people do you know who have been hit once by lightning and survived, much less five times? You’re not going to win, Dawn. Think I’m just being negative? No, I’m not. I’m being positive. I’m positive you’re not going to win! Stop placing your hope in the wrong things. Honestly, as a Christian, ask yourself if you believe God thinks this is a good use of your money. Because these are the only people who play the lottery! -Dave Dear Dave, Why is it that some people have enough money for pizza, lottery tickets, cable television and cigarettes, but they don’t buy something as inexpensive as renter’s insurance, and then they expect someone else to bail them out when a fire destroys their home? -Keith Dear Keith, This kind of behavior falls into the Stupid Tax category. It’s an aggravating thing, but at the same time there’s something about fire that elicits sympathy from me. Even if there’s stupidity involved in what happened, it’s such an emotionally devastating event. But I think it’s important to talk about what you’ve brought up. Let’s put it another way. Why are there people who get mad at others for building wealth, or expect other people to bail them out after they’ve behaved irresponsibly? Ninety percent of America’s millionaires are firstgeneration rich. They started with nothing, and instead of buying lottery tickets and smokes, they saved money and bought things like renter’s insurance. They kept things like car insurance and health insurance in place, so that if they totaled their car or had to have an operation, they could pay for it instead of filing bankruptcy! In other words, they were responsible. They stayed out of debt because they were mature enough and responsible enough to delay pleasure, and then after years of living this way, they looked up and discovered they were millionaires. That’s how it happens. You delay bits and pieces of fleeting pleasure for a quality life in the future. Now, you don’t trade away all momentary pleasures. You don’t have to completely give up fun to win with money, but you trade impulsive, immature decisions and purchases for the reward of a better life later. Most poor people delay none of the pleasures. They live only in the moment, and that’s why they stay poor. If they want a better washer and dryer, they’ll rent-to-own instead of saving up for a little while and buying a decent, used combo in the classifieds. I understand that bad things sometimes happen to good people, and you can end up broke that way, too. But I firmly believe that Dave Says continued to pg 6

Long Prairie-Grey Eagle held their First Annual Battle of the Books competition on April 4, 2014. The competition consisted of teams of 5th and 6th grade students answering a series of questions on a specific set of books that they needed to read. 29 students earned a ribbon in the Independent Round. The top three teams that earned a medal in the Team Rounds were Gold: The Strategists (Eugene Brown, Simon Lian, Erich Holmquist, Spencer Freeman); Silver: The Thunder Girls (Crystal Hernandez, Marissa Pesta Savannah Lowe, Hailey Gorr); Bronze: The Britzy Girls (Brianna Graves, Emily Miller, Averie Cavallero). Open auditions set for May 11th and 18th for ‘You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown’ The Upsala Upstage Players announce open auditions for the musical, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” by Clark Gesner. No previous experience is needed to audition. “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” is a 1967 musical comedy with music and lyrics by Clark Gesner, based on the characters created by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz in his comic strip Peanuts. Three women and three men are
needed plus Snoopy (can be played either by a man or woman). Additional performers are needed for chorus, ball teams, etc. All ages encouraged. Auditions will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 11th and 7 p.m. Sunday, May 18th, in the Upsala High School music room. Performances will be held July 25-28, 2014. Grey Eagle United Methodist Church to host 8th Annual Waffle Supper
Fire crews were called to a barn fire near New Munich on Saturday, May 3. The fire was reported on Highway 237 in Oak Township. The dairy barn, which was about 40 feet by 120 feet, had flames coming out of the roof when the fire departments arrived. There were 42 dairy cows inside the barn at the time of the fire but were safely removed by their owner. The farm site is owned by Luverne Hinnenkamp of Melrose but the barn is being rented by Kevin Bauer of Melrose. Due to the proximity to Interstate 94, Minnesota State Patrol Troopers was dispatched to assist with traffic control along with Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Deputies. The Melrose Ambulance was dispatched to stand by on scene and transported one firefighter to the Melrose Hospital after that firefighter was struck in the head by falling debris. The fire departments transported water from Melrose and were on scene for over 4 hours. The barn and dairy equipment were insured and the fire remains under investigation.

The Grey Eagle United Methodist Church will sponsor its eighth annual waffle supper on Saturday, May 10, 2014, from 4:30-7:00 p.m. It will be held at the site of the GE UMC building, 30422 County Road 2, at the intersections of County Roads 2 and 47. This is approximately two miles south of the city of Grey Eagle. The supper is supervised by Dad’s Belgian Waffles, an organization that assists a large variety of groups of people with fund raisers such as this in the states of MN, SD, and Iowa. This year’s proceeds will again go to the GE UMC Youth Group and “Imagine No Malaria,” a world-wide mission of the United Methodist Church. Every 45 seconds, a child in Africa dies of malaria. More than 1 million people die of malaria each year. Some 90% of malaria deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa. And malaria is preventable. The United Methodist Church plans to raise $75 million by 2015 to eliminate deaths in Africa. This is a comprehensive approach to beating malaria through pre-

Into the final stretch of 2014 session
The final pieces appear to be falling into place as the last weeks of session approach. With adjournment set for no later than May 19, negotiators working on the final two major spending bills were given revenue targets late last week. And with those numbers now confirmed for the second tax bill and the omnibus supplemental spending bill, it also means that the sometimes contentious bonding bill can also be finalized. Since it appears there will also be a “cash” portion to the bonding bill, the other two major bills had to be finalized before the actual amount of money allocated to the bonding bill could be set. Governor Dayton gave his annual State of the State message to a joint session of the Legislature last week, and he mentioned one particular program that is seeking bonding money. The Lewis and Clark water project in southwest Minnesota is actually a federal initiative but funding from Washington is “dry” at the moment. Some $70 million is needed to keep the project going and deliver badly needed water to areas such as Worthington and Luverne. The governor said he
would support state funding for the project, but the total amount of the bonding bill would have to be higher than the $850 million ceiling agreed to last year. Therein lies the problem, with Republicans wanting to hold to last year’s agreement, while Dayton and legislative leaders say that our improved economy warrants a higher bonding amount. And since the bonding bill is the only piece of legislation where Republican votes are needed for passage, negotiations are expected to be intense as we move into the final days of session. Another piece of legislation that will probably come up for a vote this week is a measure to legalize “medical marijuana.” This bill, literally, has had nine lives as appeared to be dead several times during the session, but it keeps coming back. The latest draft of the bill surfaced last week and contained enough changes that law enforcement, which has opposed the proposal all along, is now apparently neutral. The House bill would allow marijuana in pill or liquid form to be prescribed by a doctor or advanced practice nurse for eight medical conditions, including cancer and epilepsy. The Senate version is different with the issue of inhaling vapors still needing to be clarified.

A group of ag legislators is scheduled to meet this week with officials of the two main rail lines in Minnesota. We will hear from representatives of the Canadian Pacific and the Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroads and discuss their efforts to improve service to agricultural interests in the face of increasing shipments of North Dakota crude oil on their lines. There is a parrot in Brazil that changes its color from green to red or even yellow when it is fed certain fish. And there are some canaries whose yellow feathers will cast off a red hue if they are fed cayenne pepper when they are molting. What is true in the natural realm is also true in the spiritual realm. We become what our minds “feed” upon. “The Lord’s promises are pure,” said David “....therefore we know that you will protect the oppressed.” David knew that God’s promises were true and that He would honor His word. But what does that mean? That he will simply “protect” the oppressed and keep them that way? That certainly does not make any sense. Why would God only “protect” them? The word “protect” means “to watch over.” It carries with it the same significance as the promise to Jeremiah: “I am ready to perform My word.” Moreover, God preserves (or performs) His words “from this generation forever” - that is, from now until eternity. The word of our God stands forever! Because the Word of God stands forever, we know that its contents are true and reliable; it is God-glorifying in its message, Christ-honoring in its contents and comes to life through the Holy Spirit’s power. If we nourish our souls on its promises and feed our minds on its message our lives will reflect the grace of God. The message of the Bible will keep us from sin or sin will hide the message of the Bible from us.

Free Workshop on Basic Estate Planning
Thrivent Financial is hosting a free educational workshop on estate preservation. Called “Estate Strategy Essentials,” the one hour workshop will be held at the Little Falls Senior Center at 510 7th St. NE, Little Falls, MN. Local Municipality Minutes Swanville City April 8, 2014 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, April 8, 2014. The meeting called to order 7:30 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Peterson, Jay Bartkowicz, Tim Grittner, Jim Molitor, and AJ Johnson. Also present: Gene Epling, Mike Rude, Lonny Hutchins and reporter Terry Lehrke. Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held Tuesday, March 4, 2014 were read. A motion was made by Jay Bartkowicz to approve the minutes as read. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. The treasures report was given. A motion was made by AJ Johnson and seconded by Tim Grittner to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Mayor Peterson announced there will be a closed meeting following the regular monthly meeting to discuss personnel issues. Mike Rude, City Engineer, was present to discuss the Rhoda Avenue Project. Mike stated that a meeting with Larson Excavating and WSN engineers and the City Mayor and Clerk was held to go over extra supplies and misc. additional labor on the project. Mike then presented council with the change order which amounted to $25,929.52. He explained the change order to the council and after discussion Tim Grittner made a motion to accept the change order. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Disbursement #7 was then presented to the council. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to sign and pay disbursement #7. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. There was discussion about the yard on 509 Rhoda Avenue. The resident complained of a muddier than usual driveway this spring. Rude feels the city should monitor this problem and see if the problem is better next spring. City maintenance man Lonny, reported that the transmission on the city truck is getting bad. Council agreed that transmission work should be done before next winter,
when the truck is put to work plowing. Lonny also stated that the bearings on the city tractor loader will need to replaced soon. Mayor Peterson presented to the council the audit proposal from Schlenner Wenner & Co. for the 2013 audit. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to sign the proposal with Schlenner Wenner & Co. for the 2013 audit. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. The Clerk informed the council of the upcoming postal meeting on July 29 at 4:00 pm to discuss with residents time changes of the Swanville Post Office. City wide clean-up day is set for May 3, 2014 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Lonny will be present with the city tractor for any large items that need to be hauled from residents. There will also be garage sales, a bike rodeo with free helmets and unveiling of the two new bike racks in the City. A reminder of the Board of Equalization meeting on April 15, 2014 at 2:00 pm, Swanville Center. The clerk informed the council that the city computer is in need of
an upgrade. Council would like to see estimates at the next council meeting. Council member Jay Bartkowicz stated that there is a lot of gun firing going on at a resident’s house on Springbrook Drive. The city does not have an ordinance at this time for target practicing within the city limits. The clerk will work with the League of MN Cities to have some examples of ordinances for the next council meeting. The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. AJ Johnson made a motion to approve the claims. Jay Bartkowicz seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. The next monthly meeting will be held June 3, 2014 at 7:30 pm. There being no further business, a motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by Jay Bartkowicz to adjourn. Kindergarten: Alexzandra Rodriguez is the Kindergarten SOTM winner for April. When Alexzandra first started kindergarten, she did not speak or understand much English. When Daniela began kindergarten in September, she had very little knowledge of the English language, and therefore, both daily communication and school work were difficult for her. But I never saw her give up or even get discouraged by the obstacles she faced. Daniela has worked extremely hard over the past eight months, and her perseverance has paid off in big ways. She is a beginning reader who has mastered many of the sight words and CVC words we study in kindergarten, and her math skills have soared as well. Great job Daniela!
