Breaking down the meaning of leadership -By Harvey Mackay U.S. President and five-star General Dwight Eisenhower used a simple device to illustrate the art of leadership. that he or she is committed to its success. Loyalty is the distinguishing quality of winners. That goes for everyone – entrepreneurs, owners, managers and employees. No exceptions. A leader models loyalty so that it works top down, bottom up and side-to-side, and at all times. E is for enthusiasm. Leaders know that enthusiasm is contagious, and they help spread it around. If you are excited about hitting the pavement every day, it will show. And that generates enthusiasm among your employees and customers. You’ll get what you give. There is one thing more contagious than enthusiasm, and that is the lack of enthusiasm. Focus on the positive, even if it is a small thing. Train your brain to look for the silver lining, and then be amazed at how your improved attitude leads to enthusiasm that permeates the workplace. A is for adversity. Truly effective leaders accept adversity as a condition of doing business. I have never met a successful person who hasn’t had to overcome either a little or a lot of adversity. Don’t be afraid of adversity – handled properly, it makes you stronger. It helps you grow. Problems and people can’t stop you. The only thing that can stop you is YOU. D is for determination. Determined people, particularly determined leaders, possess the stamina and courage to
pursue their ambitions despite criticism, ridicule or unfavorable circumstances. In fact, discouragement usually spurs them on to greater things. When they get discouraged, they recognize that in order to change their results, some change is in order. Determined people also exhibit another “D” trait: discipline. E is for example. We lead by example, whether in business, family or friendships. It doesn’t matter if you’re raising children or managing people, setting a good example is one of the most important leadership skills. You have to practice what you preach. How you conduct yourself says more than any instructions you may give. Set high personal standards and expect the same from your staff. R is for resilience. Failure is all too common in business and in life. Anyone who has ever run a business wakes up regularly with nightmares about the whatifs. Successful people are resilient. They don’t let hard times turn into end times. Let them lead to your best times. S is for sincerity. Say what you mean, and mean what you say. “Go team go” only works if you are sincerely committed to what you are doing. H is for heart. A good decision must Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

Use your head, to be sure, but don’t ignore what your heart is telling you. I is for integrity. Integrity begins at the top. Leaders must set the example – inspiring employees to do what is right, rather than what is easy. We must clearly define what is expected throughout the organization, ensuring integrity is first and foremost in our decision-making. Enduring leaders know that integrity is not optional. P is for purpose. Leaders think in terms of goals. There isn’t a college football coach with a greater sense of purpose than Lou Holtz. He proved it at Notre Dame, Arkansas, the University of Minnesota and a host of other universities. Did you know that Lou once coached the New York Jets? He left the job after only eight months. Why? Because, as Lou told me, he came to the job “without a clear sense of purpose. Absent a focus of my
own, I couldn’t give one to the team. I was embarrassed by my inability to provide them with proper leadership. So I left.” Few leaders are as honest. Obituaries David J. Klasen
David J. Klasen, age 72, of St. Anthony, died peacefully on Friday, May 1, 2015 surrounded by his family at home after a long courageous battle with cancer. A Mass to celebrate the life of David was held on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony, MN with Fr. Cletus Connors, OSB officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery at a later date. David John Klasen was born August 13, 1942 in St. Rosa, MN to Tony and Adella (Toenies) Klasen. He attended school in St. Rosa, MN. He joined the National Guard and trained in Missouri and California. He married Mary Ann Beuning on October 19, 1963 in St. Rosa, MN. They lived in Holdingford and he worked at Polar Manufacturing. He began farming in Freeport in 1964 and in 1967 bought their farm near St. Anthony where he loved his land for over forty years. David and Mary Ann were blessed with four children and 52 wonderful years together. David enjoyed

David was preceded in death by his parents Tony and Adella (Toenies) Klasen; mother and father-in-law Jerome and Lillian Beuning; grandparents, John and Anna Klasen, Gerhard and Mina Toenies; brotherin-law Ed Hennen. Serving as casket bearers were his grandchildren, John Klasen, Kristi Spohn, Kelly Klasen, Kassie Klasen, Rachel Klasen, Zachary Klasen and Jack Klasen. Cross bearer was his grandson, Ben Klasen and scripture bearer was his grandson, Eli Klasen. Honorary casket bearers were Jerry Voller, David Voller and Donald Voller. Lawrence N. Ehrenberg, 92 year old resident of Swanville, MN passed away We d n e s d a y, April 29, 2015 at Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Little Falls, MN. Funeral service was held on Monday, May 4, 2015 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN with Rev. Kevin Zellers Jr. officiating. Burial took place in the St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery in Swanville, MN. Funeral arrangements were with the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Swanville, MN. Lawrence was born on April 30, 1922 in Swanville, MN to the late Carl and Martha (Ganz) Ehrenberg. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN. Lawrence grew up in Swanville, MN where he attended Swanville School. He was united in marriage to Doreen M. Reinke on September 12, 1941 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN. The couple farmed with Lawrence’s parents until they purchased the farm in
1947. Lawrence dairy farmed and operated a chicken laying house until 1980 when they sold the farm. He also worked at the Long Prairie Sales Barn, and helped Steve Thieschafer every spring and fall with the discing and plowing. Lawrence also worked as a Mounted Patrol at the Minnesota State Fair for 9 years. Lawrence was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN, Minnesota Draft Horse Association and was a former Swanville Lion member. He looked forward to family Christmas every year when he could see all his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren which he so dearly loved and adored. Lawrence is survived by sons, Dale (Pam) Ehrenberg of Burtrum, MN, Vernon (Collette) Ehrenberg of Swanville, MN and Lawrence (Joy) Ehrenberg Jr. of Cedar, MN; daughters, Phyllis (Les) Crawford of Bethel, MN, Judy (Harvey) Johnson of Coon Rapids, MN, Laureen (Rick) Braaten of Browerville, MN, and Renee (Jeff) Perowitz of Cambridge, MN; 18 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Roman J. “Boysie” Bushman
Roman J. “Boysie” Bushman, age 82, of New Munich, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 surrounded by his family at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, May 2 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard. Roman John Bushman was born July 1, 1932 in New Munich to Walter and Pauline (Suck) Bushman. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. On September 29, 1956 he married Lou Ann Rose at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Roman started out working for Starry Construction before owning and operating Bushman Sand & Gravel Road Construction. He retired in 1998 and before long he was back working, as his hobby, for Worms Lumber & Ready Mix in New Munich. Boysie enjoyed fishing, dancing, listening to music, traveling, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Boysie was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich, Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050, New Munich Lions Club, Catholic Order of Foresters, St. Joseph’s Men’s Society, and was a volunteer fireman for the New Munich
Fire Department for 20 years. Roman is survived by his wife, Lou Ann Bushman of New Munich; children, Kim (Randy) Wiener of Sauk Centre, Gale Turner of Sauk Centre, Earl Bushman of Albany, Glen (Sandy) Bushman of Grey Eagle, Jill (Bob) Pomroy of Minneapolis, Amy (Steve) Thelen of Avon, and Stacy (Kyle) Klasen of Melrose; 17 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Kenneth (Pat) Bushman of New Munich, Dolores (Larry) Terwey of Sauk Centre, Bud Bushman of Farming, Wayne (Ceil Humbert) Bushman of Melrose, and Darlene (Roger) Burg of St. Martin. Roman was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Pauline Bushman. Serving as casket bearers were Ben Austing, Kellin Proell, Jonathan Turner, Tomie Bushman, Jacob Bushman, Tanner Bushman, Hunter Thelen, and Carter Klasen. Cross bearer was Jodi Traut and scripture bearer was Kenzie Klasen. Honorary bearers were the New Munich Lions. Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Lawrence J. Imdieke
Lawrence J. Imdieke, age 89 of Meire Grove, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, May 4, 2015 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 7 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Lawrence Joseph Imdieke was born January 19, 1926 in Meire Grove, Minnesota to Bernard and Elizabeth (Haverkamp) Imdieke. On June 12, 1951 he married Lucille Schleppenbach at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Lawrence and Lucille owned and operated Imdieke Store in Meire Grove for 41 years, retiring in 1997. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and St. John’s Choir, Queen of Peace General Assembly, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus since 1962, Meire Grove Athletic Club, St. Joseph’s Men’s Society, and St. John’s Catholic United. Music was an important part of Lawrence’s life. He was a very accomplished concertina player. He loved listening to bands and dancing with Lucille as well as singing harmony with his children. Lawrence was a member of the Meire Grove City Band where he played bass drum for many years. He was a big fan of the Meire Grove baseball team. Lawrence loved the outdoors and walking in the woods. In addition to attending local parish events, he also enjoyed traveling out-of-state with family and attending monthly

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Rita I. Stewart, age 90, of Bowlus, was held Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale. Father John Odero officiated and burial took place in the parish cemetery. Rita was born on June 8, 1924 to Stanley and Cecelia (Kedrowski) Bartkowicz in Swan River Township. She grew up with seven siblings and attended the local school. On Oct. 28, 1946 Rita married Joseph Stewart at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Sobieski. The Legislature already passed $900,000 in emergency aid to help pay for initial damages, which Gov. Mark Dayton approved as other efforts continue. The House on Monday passed an omnibus agriculture finance bill which provides further funding to combat avian influenza.

Thought for Budget, Avian Flu Remain in Headlines; Entering the week: Home Stretch of Session All the major spending bills but one have been passed off the House floor in the past two weeks. The only one awaiting action is the agriculture finance bill, and it should be up for debate early this week. Usually the first spending bill to be passed, the ag. bill was held up this year as officials scrambled to come up with cost estimates in the battle against avian influenza. The disease is showing no sign of letting up as 70 Minnesota flocks had been infected at last count. It’s hoped that warmer weather, with temps in the 80s, will stop the virus. The Legislature passed an emergency measure totaling nearly $1 million that will fund the Dept. of Ag. and Board of Animal Health for the rest of the fiscal

year in their efforts to fight the disease. It’s expected another $7 million will be needed in the future. That’s on top of the initial $15 million coming from Washington and the USDA. It seems like a long time ago that the disease first broke in Minnesota with the report of a positive case in Pope County. I attended a briefing last week and heard Beth Thompson of the Board of Animal Health talk about that early detection. It occurred on March 5 and was the only commercial flock in the quarantine area. There were 38 “backyard flocks” in the zone but none of those birds ever tested positive. Following that first outbreak, the DNR did an aerial survey, covering 700 square miles. They reported sighting around 600 mallards and 18 swans, certainly not especially high numbers. In addition, they took 148 fecal samples in that same area with two coming back positive for low pathogenic influenza, which isn’t unusual, according to Lou Cornicelli of the DNR. He added that 37 wild turkeys had been brought in for testing from the first week of the turkey hunting season, and results back on the first 18 have been negative. It was also reported last week that the first case of a raptor testing positive for the disease had been reported. It was in Yellow Medicine County where a Cooper’s hawk fell onto a residential deck and died. As of now, there are no confirmed cases of H5N2 in that county, with

With the major spending bills passed by each body, the major work now turns to conference committees from the House and Senate to iron out differences and come up with language both can support. There are major differences in transportation and education, although the Senate and House both rebuffed the governor’s call for pre-kindergarten funding. The tax bill passed in the House calls for nearly $2 billion in cuts, including an end to state taxes on military pensions and Social Security benefits. That bill too, heads to conference where the Senate tax plan is vastly different. Only two weeks remain in this session, with adjournment set for Monday, May 18. Major compromise needs to take place in order to finish on time. Complicating the matter is major remodeling work in the Capital, which is scheduled to ramp up right after the session ends. Rep. Whenever is a gracious word that sounds very comforting when someone offers to help us when we are going through a difficult time. We know that someone will help when we dial 911. Our homes are wrapped in security systems “in case” someone tries to enter if they are not invited. There are endless “alerts” available to notify someone, somewhere if we fall, encounter pain or face an emergency. We are to be thankful for these and many other devices that let us know that help is available. In Psalm 34 we are reminded of the realities of life. “God’s eyes,” says David “are on the righteous,” His “ears attentive to their cry.” So, whenever the righteous cry out, “the Lord hears them.” Not may or might hear them, could or should hear them - but will hear them. We do not have to get in line, dial a number on a phone or press a button. Just “call out.” Whenever. David is very realistic about life. He’s been there and endured that. When he speaks about the tragedies in his life, we can enter into his experience with him. We have walked through the deep valleys as he has and have stumbled through similar shadows. Christians are not given a “free pass” to a life without problems. But we are given the assurance that God is more than present. “His eyes are on us” and “His ears open to us.” So, when our hearts are broken by the tragedies of life, our spirits crushed in grief, our joints ache and our illnesses never seem to end, He’s with us!

Alma R. Blenker
Alma R. Blenker, age 96 of Melrose, died peacefully on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota. A funeral service will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 9 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose with Rev. Ken Thielman officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose. Visitation will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 9 at the funeral home in Melrose. Alma Rose Faber was born March 5, 1919 in Getty Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Frank and Helen (Deters)
Faber. On October 7, 1943 she was united in marriage to Alphonse Blenker at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove. The couple farmed two miles north of Melrose for many years before moving into town. Alma was a fan of the MN Twins and enjoyed knitting and embroidering. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Christian Mothers, and Catholic United Financial. Survivors include her children, Sharon (Meyer) Tesrow of Sleepy Eye, MN and Carol (Fred) Lee of Sioux Falls, SD; three grandchildren, Chris Lee of Brooklyn, NY, Scott Meyer of Sleepy Eye, and Rachel (Carl) Hoffman of New Ulm; and two greatgrandchildren, Karson and Cole Hoffman. Alma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alphonse Blenker on December 11, 1993; brothers, John, Joseph, Herman, Edward, and Frank Faber; sisters, Annie Illies, Loretta Koll, Katie Salzman, and Rose Wehlage.
Upstage Players Auditions for Mary Poppins begin May 11
For their summer musical the Upstage Players based out of Upsala will be presenting Mary Poppins. Open auditions are being held in the Upsala Auditorium on Monday, May 11th at 8 PM and Thursday, May 14th at 8 p.m., if you cannot make it on the 11th. There are four principle roles for adults (Mary, Burt, Mr. & Mrs. Banks)
and two principle roles for kids (Jane & Michael Banks). There are many other smaller supporting roles as well. For those who don’t receive or want a speaking role there are opportunities to appear in the chorus. Rehearsals will likely be held on Sunday, Monday and Thursday evenings with performances scheduled for July 24-27.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, My wife and I go to a small church where we tithe. The church is continually asking for contributions to other charities and causes, and we don’t have the money to give to them all while we’re sticking to our budget and getting out of debt. The worst part is that we get pretty aggressive pushback when we say no. What can we do? -Michael Dear Michael, I don’t react well to that kind of pushback. I would probably be nice a couple of times, but after that my response might sound something like, “Mind your own business.” Seriously, I’d probably be a little gentler than that. But basically when it reaches that point, they’re saying, “I want your money.” And that’s really over the top. If it goes even further, and it becomes a question of you “digging deep” or not having enough faith, I might get un-gentle in a hurry. Your first job is to provide for your family and take care of those kinds of responsibilities — which is a very scriptural stance. Once you’ve done that, then you’ll hopefully have the financial ability to move beyond tithes and into offerings, which are completely different concepts. Tithes are first fruits off the top, while offerings are from surplus — meaning that you and your family are doing well financially. Another thing to consider is this:
Does this church turn every impulse they have into pressure to donate or buy something, because they didn’t plan for this kind of stuff in the church budget? I’d start having a problem with the leadership if this turned out to be the case, because it’s a sign they’re not planning and leading well. Hopefully, you can explain to these folks the reason why you can’t contribute to additional things at the moment and they’ll understand. If not, and it were me in your shoes, I think I’d have to find another church. -Dave Dear Dave, I’ve been following your plan, and I have my emergency fund in place and am investing in mutual funds. Recently, a financial planner recommended bonds to me. What is your opinion on this? -Becky Dear Becky, I don’t recommend bonds at all right now. I’m not a fan of them, and I don’t own any. The bond market is almost as volatile as the stock market, and it doesn’t pay nearly as much on average. On top of all that, bond prices work at an inverse of interest rates. In other words, as interest rates rise, bond prices go down. Long-term interest rates are still really low. If you were to buy a bunch of bonds right now, and interest rates went up even one percent, you could lose a lot! I recommend mutual funds and good growth stock mutual funds. There are always some bonds mixed in with a growth and income fund, and I’m not opposed to that to some degree, but it’s not my favorite. So, if I were ever going to buy bonds — and I’m not going to — it definitely wouldn’t be right now. It doesn’t take much of a move in interest rates for bond prices to go down dramatically.
