Don’t let incompetence become your Titanic -By Harvey Mackay The Titanic was state-of-the art. No expense had been spared to make sure that it would be unsinkable.

The officers were unconcerned by their inability to get accurate information on possible hazards which might lie in its course.

The ship had two lookouts on its masts, but they had no binoculars. The crew could see far enough ahead to react to danger, but unbelievably they had no way to get that information to the captain if they did see a problem approaching.

And we all know what happened. The unsinkable ocean liner went to her death, along with most of her passengers on her maiden voyage – the victim of a disastrous collision with an iceberg.

Disasters like this can happen in business also if we aren’t careful to make sure vital intelligence doesn’t get swallowed up by internal bureaucracy and inattention to detail.

Most of you have probably heard of the Peter Principle, a management concept developed by Dr. Laurence Peter. It observes people in a hierarchy “rise to a level of

incompetence.” They don’t start out as incompetent, but rather are promoted until they reach a level of respective incompetence.

An obvious solution to the Peter Principle is for companies to provide training for employees before they receive a promotion to ensure they are qualified for the job for which they are being promoted.

For example, I’ve seen many outstanding sales representatives promoted to sales manager when they don’t have any experience developing business plans, setting sales quotas and sales plans, analyzing data, mentoring a sales force, hiring and firing and so on.

Besides a lack of training, there are numerous other factors resulting in incompetence in the workplace, such as sheer laziness, poor communication and lack of people skills.

People are lazy for a variety of reasons from Covid fatigue to reliance on technology.

People become sloppy in checking their work and thus make multiple mistakes. They show up late for work and often don’t look professional when they do. Waiting until the last minute to get assignments done can also be a sign of laziness.

The most basic yet crucial leadership skill is communication, yet many people struggle with giving clear instructions. To make communication really work, we have to make sure the people we’re talking with understand what we are saying as well as we do. Communication requires both effective sending and receiving. To avoid a breakdown

in communications, break down your message so that everyone can understand it.

From time to time, it’s a good idea to re-evaluate your performance in these fundamental areas: speaking, listening, writing, leading meetings and resolving conflict. Talk is cheap, but misunderstandings can be costly.

Communication ranks high among top people skills, but incompetent people also lack social skills like patience, politeness, sympathy and teamwork. They are often rude, overbearing, hot-headed, tactless and have trouble getting along with others.

Many companies have had to reduce costs, which puts a heavy burden on otherwise competent employees by spreading them too thin. Where possible, managers should consider outsourcing or hiring contractors to take away some of the burden. Those costs will be money well-spent.

Other companies hire people and expect too much, too soon. Hiring is much more than filling an open position. Not everyone hits the ground running. People grow at various speeds. Help them prove their competence by setting clear, achievable goals. If they fail, the fault may lie more in the hiring process than the employee’s lack of skills.

Incompetence in one area doesn’t necessarily carry over. We all have strengths and weaknesses. The balance between the two often determines the perception of competence. Build on your strengths but don’t ignore your weaknesses.

Let’s face it, everyone has had an incompetent moment or two or three in their lifetime. That includes me. When I was starting my envelope manufacturing company many years ago, I worked many long, long days. One night when I got home late again, my very pregnant wife Carol

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Spring Duties 2

The oats are planted. Now we need to get ready to plant corn. There is a need to hurry, because it won’t be many days until the leaves on the oak trees will be as big as a mouse’s ear and that’s when the corn needs to be planted.

There are several things that need to be done.

The steer and hog pens needed to be cleaned and the manure spread on the corn ground before they are plowed. The area around the young stock feed bunks needed to be scooped up so that manure could cover the corn ground. Any loose and thawed manure piles in the cow yard had to also be spread on the field. The chicken barn, along with it’s strong ammonia smell was usually the last to be cleaned. If the manure was left on the field for a longer period of time, the smell would diffuse into the air along with the benefit of the manure for the soil.

Now, it’s time to plow. The oak leaves are developing and it’s time to get the corn seeds in the ground. The new three bottom plow with a 14 inch bite really helps to get the ground plowed sooner. The other plow is a two bottom plow with a 16 inch bite. Every time you go down the field, you are turning over an additional 10 inches of soil. With both plows working at once, you can plow over 2 acres per hour.

I guess that’s why you planned to spend late night hours to get the plowing done. So if you didn’t tangle up with a rock and break the plow, the next morning will show a lot more of the ground plowed.

The plowing is done and now it’s time to run the disc over the field, followed by the drag being pulled across the field, rather than the long way, so that the mark of the row marker on the corn planter will be easier to see.

It’s time to get the corn in the ground.

The pattern is either to be checked, hill dropped or drilled. When planted as checked corn, a wire with knots in it every 42 inches

was placed over the length of the field. The wire was run through the corn planter and each time a knot bumped the seed dropper it would drop three seeds and a bit of fertilizer.

The corn rows were 42 inches apart and by checking the corn it would allow one to cultivate the corn not only with the length of the field, but also across the field. Since no weed killer was used, checked corn usually had less weeds.

When hill dropping corn, two seeds were dropped at about 16 inch intervals in the row.

Drilled corn involved dropping one corn seed about 8 inches apart. The planting patterns were done based on the farmer’s preference.

One of the concerns involved in growing corn or oats was weeds. Cultivating the corn at the best time would involve covering new weeds with dirt rolled unto the row with the cultivator, sometimes referred to as “hilling the corn.” The weeds that created the most concern were thistles, pig weeds, lambs quarter and mustard. Since these weeds were able to spread more quickly and sometimes grow to a larger plant, they were targeted for elimination. They were sometimes cut with a corn knife or a scythe or if possible, they were pulled, which was the most effective method. One could plan to spend many afternoons eliminating weeds, which was like picking rocks, but the sounds of the birds singing made it more fun.

The planting is over. Now we need to do some harvesting so that we can hopefully make a profit. Next story will include making hay etc.

Ann, told me that the light in the hallway wasn’t working. I flipped the switch and sure enough, no light. I thought there was a short in the switch or something, so I called our electrician.

He fixed the problem early the next morning, handed me the bill and said, “This is the first time I’ve ever made a house call to change a light bulb!”

Judith (Judy) Mareck

Judith (Judy) Mareck of Albany, Minnesota passed away peacefully on April 28, 2021 at the age of 75 after a long courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by her loving family.

A mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, May 3 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Father Julius Beckermann, OSB officiating.

Judith Catherine Mareck was born January 2, 1946 in Albany, Minnesota to Frank and Gertrude (Kohorst) Wohletz. She graduated from Albany High School in 1963. She was united in marriage to Richard Mareck on September 11, 1965 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. She was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, and St. Francis Mission Group. Judy was an exceptional Daycare Provider for over forty years. Judy enjoyed working on jigsaw puzzles,

Alphonse C. “Al” Hartung, age 84 of Avon, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at his home in Avon, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 6 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Anna with Rev. Gregory Mastey officiating. Interment will be held in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m.

Al was born August 2, 1936 to George Sr. and Elizabeth (Lang) Hartung in Krain Township on the family farm southwest of Holdingford. He was the youngest of 5 children. He helped out on the farm and later on started a job at Franklin (Electrolux,) which he worked for over 35 years.

He married Elizabeth (Betty) Thell on September 10, 1966 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, St. Francis, MN. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic church in St. Anna, Minnesota. He raised his five children on a hobby farm near Avon.

Linda Witte

Services celebrating the life of Linda Witte, age 75 of Avon, will be 11:00 AM. Thursday, May 6 at the Avon Community Church.

Burial will be in the South Elmdale C o m m u n i t y Cemetery. Linda passed away Thursday, April 29, 2021 at the St. Cloud Hospital. There will be a visitation after 9:30 AM, Thursday at the church in Avon.

Linda was born July 11, 1945 in Scottsbluff, NB to Victor and Rosie (Adams) Zwetzig. She grew up in Lead, SD and married Albert Witte on Aug 16, 1964 in Lead. The couple lived in Blooming Prairie before moving to Avon in 1977. Linda worked as a sales associate for Kmart for over 30 years, retiring in 2012.

Linda loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed camping with her family at their hunting land. She also enjoyed gardening, doing cross stitch, especially birth announcements for each of her great-grandchildren. She was dearly loved by her family and friends she made along the way. She is a member of the Avon Community Church and she was a volunteer for the Avon Food Shelf and a former member of the Avon Mr. & Mrs. Fishing Club.

She loved to travel with Rich whenever there was an opportunity, especially to her favorite destination Disney World in Florida including those beloved Disney Cruises which she so dearly loved. Judy was an avid Minnesota Twins fan and spent many hours sitting on the edge of her seat wondering if it would be a win for her favorite team. Judy also spent many hours working in her beautiful flower gardens despite those nasty weeds.

Survivors include her loving husband of 56 years, Richard Mareck of Albany; children, Denise (Richard) Waldvogel of Sartell, Andrew (Michele) Mareck of Otsego; 4 grandchildren, Brittany (Michael) Jarosz of Dassel, Brandon Waldvogel of Mound, Dylan and Mason Mareck of Otsego; and 2 great-grandchildren Olivia and Flynn Jarosz; sister, Eileen Dingmann of Richmond; and sisters-in-law, Kathy Wohletz of Holdingford and Shirley Wohletz of Albany.

She was proceeded in death by her parents; daughter, Amy Mareck; brothers, Donald Kleve, Frank Wohletz, Jr, August Wohletz and Roger Wohletz; sister, Audrey Meierhofer; brothersin-law, Jerry Meierhofer, Joe Dingmann; and sister-in-law, Evie Kleve.

Memorials to Holy Family School, Albany are preferred.

Arrangements were with Miller-Carlin Funeral Home, Albany.

He loved the country life, from yard work and bird watching, to planting hundreds of trees.

He enjoyed doing field work with his Farmall H tractor, growing enough sweet corn for his family, friends, and neighbors. He loved raising vegetables in his garden. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially the trips to Canada and Park Rapids with his sons. He liked listening to old time and country music on the local radio station. He always enjoyed getting together with family and friends, whether it was planned or just stopping by.

His Catholic faith and family were a very important part of his life. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Betty Hartung of Avon; children, James Hartung (Carrie Seanger) of St. Cloud, Gerald Hartung (Jana Mckinley-Sage) of Clear Lake, Michael (Cleo) Hartung of Park Rapids, Julie (Jeremiah) Wruck of St. Joseph, and Theresa (Jason) Schmidt of Byron; eight grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Hartung of Holdingford and Lorraine Hartung of Avon.

Al was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Virginia Eickoff; and brothers, Cyril, Stephen, and George Jr. Serving as casket bearers will be Gerald Hartung, Michael Hartung, Thomas Hartung, Luke Hartung, Jim Hartung, and Jeremiah Wruck. Cross bearer will be Kristine Blonigen and scripture bearer will be Julie Wruck. The reader will be Cleo Hartung.

Dennis R. “Lewie” Steuck

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, May 7, 2021 at Peace United Church in Long Prairie for Dennis “Lewie” Steuck, 68, of Long Prairie.

Rev. Gary Taylor will officiate. The family will receive visitors from 5-8:00 PM on Thursday, May 6, 2021 at Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home Stein Chapel in Long Prairie and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Dennis was born February 23, 1953 in Little Falls to Reuben and Elfa (Milinske) Steuck. He graduated from Long Prairie High School and went on to college in Staples. He has been affectionately known as Lewie since his high school years. He married Arlene Kleinschmidt on November 1, 1986 at Zion United Church of Christ in Long Prairie.

Lewie was a bartender for a time before becoming a Product Manager for Schwann’s.

Many in the community will miss his presence at the Holiday Gas Station where he was the night manager for twenty-two years. He was also a hobby farmer who proudly cared for his beef cattle.

Lewie was active in softball teams when he was younger. He joined bowling, pool and multiple dart leagues. Activities such as these allowed him to do what he really loved to do, socialize with people. He was such a people person that he could make a perfect stranger feel like a friend. Fishing was an enjoyable pastime. Above all though, Lewie loved to

Eugenia Elizabeth Weier was born December 16, 1925 in Zion Township (St. Martin), Stearns County, Minnesota to Leopold and Johanna (Ehresmann) Weier. She was the youngest of six children. Jean’s family moved to Melrose after her dad died. She graduated from Melrose High School and was the Homecoming Queen. On June 28, 1949 she married Joseph Schulzetenberg at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. After their marriage, Jean worked at Melrose Produce for a short time before becoming a full-time homemaker raising their three children. The family moved to Freeport and while being a homemaker, Jean had a supporting role during the years Joe owned and operated Freeport Hardware.

Upsala Drama Club to present Xanadu

The Upsala Drama Club is returning to the stage to perform the musical version of “Xanadu.” It’s a kitschy show based on the 1980 movie of the same name and features some great songs originally performed by Olivia Newton-John and Electric Light Orchestra.

The show is set in 1980, as discouraged artist Sonny (Braedan Rene) creates a mural of the Greek Muses. The Muses come to life and their leader Clio (Audrey Thomas) decides to inspire Sonny to fulfill his dream to open a roller disco. They try to get help from real estate mogul Danny (Michael Young), while two of Clio’s jealous sisters (Olivia Hollermann & Anna Blonigen) try to undermine Clio.

The rest of the cast includes Olivia Pe-

terson, Tomasso Filagrana, Anders Aleckson, Hannah Luedtke, Paige Gerads, Evie Aleckson, Lilieana Daniel, and Hailie Luedtke.

Popular songs in the show include “Magic,” “Suddenly,” and “Have You Never Been Mellow” by Olivia Newton-John; and “I’m Alive,” “Evil Woman,” “All Over The World,” and “Strange Magic” by ELO - as well as the title song “Xanadu.”

Performances will be in the Upsala Auditorium on May 14 & 15 at 7:30 p.m., and on May 16 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the door. Guests in the school are expected to follow the current COVID safety guidelines, and some seats will be blocked off to encourage distancing.

Leo was born April 11, 1941 in Avon to Martin & Alvina (Klocker) Maehren. He farmed his entire life on the family farm in Avon until his retirement. He is a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon and was active in the Catholic Order of Foresters. He enjoyed going to church, gardening, cooking and farming. He was very meticulous and kept everything immaculate including his house, farm and machinery.

He is survived by his sister JoAnn Symanietz of Sartell; nephews, Duane and Kevin Symanietz.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law, Eugene Symanietz.

Memorials are preferred to Parkinson’s Research or St. Benedict’s Church in Avon.

John H. Hanson, 80 year old resident of Swanville, MN passed away Sunday, May 2, 2021 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 15, 2021, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Swanville, MN with Father Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Burial will be in Bearhead Cemetery west of Pillsbury, MN. Visitation will be from 12 to 2 PM on Saturday at St. John’s Catholic Church in Swanville. Military Rites will be conducted by the Long Prairie VFW. Arrangements are with the Shelley Funeral Chapel of Little Falls, MN. John Henry Hanson was born on September 29, 1940 in Morrison County, Minnesota to the late Frank Hanson & Gladys (Martin) Hanson.

He was united in marriage to Mary Kanieski on May 19, 1962. They lived on a hobby farm near Swanville. John served overseas in Korea as a MP (Military Police) in the Army from 19581961. He then served in the military reserve

from 1961-1964. John was the Superintendent of Fabrication in the boning and shipping department for Long Prairie Packing Company until retirement. He was a member of the VFW in Long Prairie. John loved spending time with family and friends. He will be remembered for his work ethic, collections, and for being meticulous. He was absolutely the best storyteller and card player. John was also an avid bowler and a dedicated deer hunter. John’s best day was in August, 2018 when an Angel of the Lord comforted him at the Staples Hospital.

John is survived by his wife, Mary of nearly 59 years; children, John Dean, Lori (Joel), Gregory, Sheri (Steve), and Carrie (Bob); twenty-one grandchildren, and twenty greatgrandchildren; brother, Burt and sisters, Bernice and Viola.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Gladys Hanson; brothers, Dewayne and Vernon; sisters, Irene and Grace and daughter-in-law, Susan Hanson.

Upsala City • May 3, 2021 Call to Order/Attendance: The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 P.M. The pledge of allegiance was said.

On roll call members present were: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Lana Bartells, Crystal Benson, Brian Lange, and Mitch Lange. Staff present: First Response Vice President Andrea Douvier, Planning & Zoning Chair Don Marty, Public Works Director Mike Tschida, and City Clerk-Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Minutes: Brian Lange moved to approve minutes from April 5, 2021 City Council Meeting, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Added agenda items: Bartells moved to approve the agenda as presented, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Department Reports: Fire Department Report: Brian Lange informed the Council the Upsala Fire Department will be in charge of traffic duty, Kids Water Fights, Pedal Pull, and Fireworks duty for Heritage Days.

First Response Team: Douvier updated the Council on the First Response Team activities. They are nearly completed with the refresher trainings. They are also planning on having a luncheon for the Memorial Day Service at the Upsala Rec Building.

Maintenance Report: Tschida reported on water and sewer levels as well as the various tasks done throughout the City. He also updated the council on his monthly activities.

One discharge from the ponds has been started for this spring.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the office work done in last month. The garage sale forms are starting to come in. The listing and map will be published in the May newsletter.

She also reminded the council of the school referendum that will be held at City Hall on Tuesday, May 11 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Planning Commission: Don Marty reported on the Planning Commission’s meeting. They are working on updating the zoning ordinance. They also updated the Building Permit Application.

Marty also reviewed what a Conditional Use Permit is used for.

Recreation Board: No meeting was held.

Public Hearing: Mayor Johnson recessed the regular Council meeting and opened the public hearing at 7:30 pm; a hearing on the City adopting Ordinance #63 – an ordinance regulating lot splits.

Don Marty walked through the ordinance with examples. No comments were heard from the community.

Benson moved to close the public hearing, 2nd by Mitch Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Mayor Johnson called the regular City Council meeting back to order at 7:34 p.m.

Brian Lange moved to adopt Resolution 5-3-21-1 a resolution incorporating Ordinance #63 - regulating lot splits in the City Limits, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Unfinished Business: Heritage Days Meeting: Bartells reviewed the Heritage Days meeting that was held April 20 and reminded everyone of the meeting set for May 18.

Brian Lange moved to give the budgeted amount of $4,000 to Heritage Days for this year’s events, 2nd by Mitch Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Upsala Senior Living: Mayor Rollie Johnson will be meeting with Tim Matros on the current stage of the Upsala Senior Living facility.

New Business: Relief Association Pension Raise: The Upsala Firemen’s Relief Association is requesting a raise for their retirement fund to go from $600.00 per year of service to $900.00 per year of service. This would require the city to give the Firemen’s Relief Association an annual payment of $3,530.00 to cover the cost of the increase.

Mayor Rollie Johnson requested that the this be tabled until the June Council meeting; in the mean time he will call a Fireboard meeting for May 17 at 7:30 pm to discuss the issue with the other entities responsible for the cost sharing.

Fatal Motorcycle Crash: May 1, 2021: At approximately 2:59 p.m. received a 911 call reporting a single motorcycle crash with injuries near the intersection of County Road 54 and Quaker Road in Albany Township. This intersection is just outside of Albany City limits.

The motorcycle was the only vehicle involved in the crash. The driver was later identified as Troy Thomas Karger, 52, of Albany.

Karger sustained serious injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Initial investigation shows Karger was traveling east on County Road 54 and failed to manipulate the curve causing the motorcycle to leave the roadway and strike a fence. The crash remains under investigation.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, Albany Police Department, and Albany Fire and Rescue responded to the scene.

David W. Schneider

he farmed with his family on the land currently occupied by Mills Fleet Farm. He married Patricia Rassier on December 6, 1969 in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Waite Park. The couple purchased their own farm and moved to Holdingford in 1971.

David is survived by his wife, Patricia Schneider, Holdingford; his children, Melissa Stern, Sauk Rapids; Troy Schneider, Holdingford; Tina (Matt) Tschann, Albany; Jamie Schneider, Holdingford; Amy (Kurt) Massmann, Paynesville; April Berg, Eden Valley; Jennifer (Tom) Strandberg, Holdingford and nine grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, 8 brothers and sisters and granddaughter, Chantel Stern.

John E. Laing

Melrose High School. He entered the U.S. Army in 1965, serving until he was honorably discharged in 1967. He married Diann Sand on June 1, 1968 in St. Anthony. The couple lived in Albany and John worked in the parts department of Lux Farm Supply, and he then retired from Maney International. John loved to hunt, especially deer, coyote, and raccoon.

He was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church and the Albany American Legion.

John is survived by his wife, Diann Laing, Avon; his children, Michael (Connie) Laing, Avon, Lori (Brian) Fuchs, Avon, and Gary (Tammy Jo) Laing, Avon. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren; Katie, Luke, Dustin, Jonathon, Alaina, Leanna, and Reanna; and his sisters, Carolin Polm, Florida, MaryAnn (Ken) Fairbanks, Brooklyn Park, and Phyllis Laing, Maple Grove.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Elmo and Catherine Laing.

An open house, celebrating the life of David W. Schneider, age 82 of Holdingford, will be 5-8:00 PM, Tuesday, May 11, at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in Holdingford, Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

David was born December 5, 1938 in St. Cloud to Hubert and Rose Schneider. He grew up in Waite Park, where The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of John E. Laing, age 77, will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, May 8th, at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. John died Sunday, May 2, 2021 at the Serenity Village in Avon. There will be a visitation after 10:00 AM Saturday at the church in Albany.

John was born March 8, 1944 in Melrose to Elmo and Catherine (Osendorf) Laing.

By Barb Dinkel Goodrich, General Crime and Abused Child Services Coordinator; Hands of Hope Resource Center-Todd County In recognition of National Police Week 2021, communities across the United States will come together May 9-15 to honor and remember those law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as the family members, friends and fellow officers they left behind.

• There are more than 800,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities throughout the United States.

• As of 2019, there have been 56,034 assaults against law enforcement officers, resulting in approximately 17,188 injuries.

• Since the first recorded death in 1786, more than 22,000 law enforcement officers in the United States have made the ultimate sacrifice and been killed in the line of duty.

The names of these dedicated public ser-

vants are engraved on the wall of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C. • 394 new names of fallen heroes will be added to the memorial this year. These 394 officers include 295 officers who were killed during 2020 (182 fatalities were COVID-19 related), plus 99 officers who died in previous years but whose stories of sacrifice had been lost to history until now.

• In tribute to American law enforcement officers, May 15, 2021 is dedicated as Peace Officers Memorial Day in honor of all fallen officers and their families and U.S. flags should be flown at half-staff.

Let us join together during National Police Week and publicly salute the service and dedication of law enforcement officers in Todd County, and in communities across the nation.

The word budget gets a bum rap, because some people think it’ll be like putting a straitjacket on their spending and their lives. But that really isn’t true at all.

Budgeting actually gives you the power to spend wisely and with purpose. Budgeting even causes feelings of fear, intimidation, and anger in some folks. Sure, it takes a little time and effort at first to create a budget that really works. But once you get the hang of it, and it doesn’t take long, the hard part is over.

Still, to make your cash flow plan work, you have to do it consistently. That means sitting down every month, and making a budget for the upcoming month. Don’t let the fear of what you might find stop you, and don’t over-complicate things. It’s easy as writing down your income and everything that requires money for the month, then doing a little basic math. And once you have a plan in place, stick to it! Too many people get lazy, or “forget” to do a monthly budget.

Give it a shot, Carter. You’ll experience a sense of freedom, security, and accomplishment like you’ve never felt before once you’ve taken that first step toward gaining control of your money!

Dear Motor Medics, I drive a 2014 Ford F150 with a 5.4 engine and I have installed a lot of accessories because I use it as a pilot car, and I take it camping often. When I am on the road, I camp probably 30 times a year. My problem is with the battery. I am on my second battery in the truck and I feel they should last longer than they are, but I need your advice as to which battery would be the best choice. I have seen new batteries lately called AGM batteries but do not know what they are. Are they better?

- Bill in Branson, Missouri AGM batteries stand for Absorbed Glass Mat and it is not a new technology, but an exceptionally good one that is coming down in price and is showing up in more batteries every year. AGM is a proven, very good strong battery design. AGM batteries typically can be discharged further and recharged fully more times than a traditional lead acid type battery and they work very well in the cars we have today with lots of either factory or aftermarket electron ics added to them. These batteries are also less prone to leakage like a wet acid filled battery. We use them in many of our vehicles and we have installed them in our shop when a customer has a similar situation to yours and they need the absolute best possible battery that they can get.

I mean as I approach the stop sign just before I stop at about 3 mph the brake pedal shakes and I lurch forward, and I am afraid that I may crash into the car in front of me. The shop cannot duplicate the issue and I do not know what to do.

uncomfortable and scary situation. We have experienced what you are going through before. The Ford Escape is not the only vehicle that this has happened to. Many cars and trucks with ABS which now encompass most every vehicle on the road have great braking systems but when they fail, any number of safety issues can come up.

The one you have is most often caused by one or more of the wheel speed sensors not sending the proper signal to the ABS computer. If the computer thinks that one wheel is stopping faster than the others it releases pressure to that wheel and the car moves forward for a short time until the other wheels catch up. Often it is a simple sensor or wire that needs repair. As with any safety system it should be repaired right away, and it may take more time at the shop.
