many of you as well.

The number one line from my networking book, “Dig Your Well Before You’re Thirsty,” is: “If I had to name the single characteristic shared by all the truly successful people I’ve met over a lifetime, I’d say it is the ability to create and nurture a network of contacts.”

Networking is that important for business.

In my entire career I have never once heard a successful person say he or she regretted putting time and energy into their network.

Author Porter Gale said, “Your network is your net worth.”

Networking is not a numbers game. The idea is not to see how many people you can meet; the idea is to compile a network of people you can count on.

For most people networking is a learned behavior, like learning to swim. It is a gradual process of trial and error, small incremental steps and finally a few breakthroughs.

If you want to practice, start with your family and extended family and then their extended families. Your network is potentially the size of your contacts, plus all your relatives’ contacts, your friends’ contacts, your business associates’ contacts and so on. I like to say when two people exchange dollar bills, each has only one dollar. However, when two people exchange networks, they each have two networks.

Four of the best groups I know for networking are alumni clubs, industry associations, social clubs and hobby groups.

Some universities have better alumni networks than others, but every school – even high schools – have an alumni club. Relationships are not assigned based on profession, gender or race.

Trade groups are happy hunting grounds for networking in all kinds of ways. In fact, I recently was at the spring meeting of the Envelope Manufacturers Association in my role as chairman of MackayMitchell Envelope Company.

Golf clubs, social clubs and athletic clubs are extremely important parts of a person’s network. More deals probably are closed in these places than in all the offices in the country combined. (Well, maybe not quite as many, but how else to justify the time and expense to our spouses and bosses?)

And hobbies have always been a terrific way to make contacts across a broad and diverse spectrum because buffs often are scattered all over the map and can be found in all income, age and social groups.

And if you haven’t mastered the incredible reach of the Internet, using sites like LinkedIn, you are missing out on an enormous opportunity.

Of course, there’s a Facebook group for every interest, including all aspects of business. I’ve established international contacts that used to be accessible only through well-timed phone calls or overseas travel.

As the pandemic continues to recede, there are more opportunities for in-person networking. If you’re out of practice, or new to the whole networking thing, remember these basic tips for making a positive impression: • Be your authentic self. Don’t try to put on an act when you first meet someone. Smile,

be friendly, and most of all, be yourself. Other people will respond to an open attitude.

• Develop your story. Produce a short narrative for yourself, describing who you are and what you want to accomplish in life.

Keep it short and simple—you don’t want to overwhelm a new acquaintance with your life story, just give them a glimpse into your personality.

• Target the right people. Don’t try to establish a relationship with everyone you meet. Identify people in your industry who can help you with knowledge and insight—and who you can help as well.

• Do some homework. Before going to a networking event like a happy hour or industry conference, find out who is going to be there so you can plan your approach. Do you know anyone already? Can a friend help you connect with someone new? Be prepared.

• Stay open. Although you may have an idea of what kind of people you want to connect with, don’t write anyone off too quickly.

Sometimes a person from a different industry has experiences or insights that can be valuable to you. Get to know people to assess whether they merit staying in contact with.

Mackay’s Moral: The more you exercise your networking muscles, the stronger they get – and the easier networking becomes.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Learned Behavior

you have noticed something that someone does that makes you remember that person's parents.

As a kid, especially in years past, you spent most of your waking hours with a parent. The result is that the kids looked, acted and reacted in ways similar to their adult parents. This wasn't something the kid wanted to do, it just happened naturally. We didn't wear homemade clothes or clothes with patches to school to be “with it." We dressed with the clothes we had as long as they were patched and clean. The thought of buying overpriced torn clothes to wear in public was unheard of, but that is the current style.

The most obvious is the way they walk and the facial and verbal expressions that, if you know the parent, seem familiar. Some male adults position their back in a way that is the same or similar to their dad. This causes them to walk like their dad. Some kids use their hands to help explain the subject of a conversation, similar to their parents' hand motions. Girls typically have a slight facial similarity to their mother, which when coupled with a few slightly different facial expressions, allow the mother's influence to become obvious.

Verbal expressions, such as special words or phrases, which were unique to a family are frequently part of the kid's vocabulary. Starting a sentence with “ya” may be an indication of a family or possibly a nationality. As one could notice, some of those words came from the previous generation. The older generation parents had a greater influence on what the kids said, but with the newer generation there are greater numbers of verbal expression choices.

Now the kids spend much more time in school, on the phone, TV or with other kids, making them more 'society similar' because they want their speech and actions to be like everyone else.

Every day we experience interruptions to our plans. Some individuals respond with frustrated language while others calmly overcome the interruption and go on with their day. How someone reacts is probably how they saw their elders react to a similar situation.

For a cow kicking the milk pail or wrapping her wet manure crusted tail around your face, frequently calls for a response that involved a strong reaction, which may also apply to lesser interruptions. How mother reacted to a dishpan of water spilled on the kitchen floor may be how her daughter reacts to someone with very muddy shoes walking across the kitchen floor and into the living room. Usually not coupled with joyous expression.

Do you still put clean coffee cups upside down on the cupboard shelf? Does your house still have vermin that would mess in the inside of the cup? Do you leave a little coffee in the bottom of the coffee cup? Does your current coffee maker allow grounds in the bottom of the cup? Do you dump the last water in a water glass, even though the bottom of the water glass no longer contains sand and rust which was common when you were a kid? These are some habits you learned as a kid and have become part of you.

You went to church with your family and probably still attend a similar church. You were taught by parents that had grown up during hard times to be conservative. You, as a male, still walk on the road side and allow the lady to be protected on the inside of the sidewalk.

Sometimes you have learned that it is better to stay out of the kitchen when Mother is doing the meal preparation. This may be due to not getting in her way, or maybe to avoid peeling potatoes or washing the pots and pans.

Kenneth C. Pohlmann

Kenneth C. Pohlmann, age 68, of Hoffman, died on Sunday, May 1, 2022, at Prairie Ridge Hospital in Elbow Lake.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 6, 2022, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Brandon with Fr. Peter VanderWeyst officiating. Interment will take place at the church cemetery at a later date.

Visitation is from 5-8 p.m., Thursday at Lind Family Funeral Home in Alexandria and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Kenneth Clarence was born on December 11, 1953, to Raymond and Mildred (Gerads) Pohlmann in Melrose. He was baptized on December 20, 1953, in Melrose. Kenneth graduated from Grey Eagle High School in 1971. Following his education, Kenneth began his roofing career with Herzog Roofing. He joined Buttweiler’s Do All, Inc. on February 1, 1978, where he worked until his retirement on December 4, 2015. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, farming and gardening. Most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Pohlmann; and son, Shawn Pohlmann.

Kenneth is survived by his six children, Sheila (Mark) Christian of Upsala, Sharry Thompson of Albany, Scott Pohlmann of Brandon, Steve (Ann) Pohlmann of Millerville, Craig (Stephani) Pohlmann and Shalyn (Jason) Olson both of Brandon; mother, Mildred Pohlmann of Grey Eagle; 13 siblings, Viola (Mike) Fogel, Jim (Gloria) Pohlmann, Patty (Larry) Brake all of Grey Eagle, Shirley (Jim) Fuchs of Melrose, Susan (Mike) Haller of Coon Rapids, Jerry (Bev) Pohlmann, LeRoy (Janine) Pohlmann, Richard Pohlmann, Joanne Pohlmann, Bill (Kim) Pohlmann, Nancy (Dwight) Tschida, Donnie Pohlmann, and Michael Pohlmann, all of Grey Eagle; 16 grandchildren, Tori and Tara Christian, Savannah Stumpf, Jordon and Bryce Thompson, Logan and Riley Thompson, Parker, Kenan, and Brynlie Pohlmann, Croix, Knox, and Nixon Pohlmann, and Mason, Reegan, and Raelyn Olson; great-granddaughter, Aria Gerads; along with many nieces and nephews.

Doris M. Wedl

Private Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Doris M. Wedl, age 93, of Swanville who passed away on Saturday, April 30, 2022 at Guardian Angel Care Center in Elk River. Reverend Ron Dockendorf will officiate. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery.

Doris was born February 11, 1929 in St. Cloud to Christ and Genevieve (Borck) Eizenhoefer. She married Gerald Wedl on December 14, 1948 in St. Cloud. She a was homemaker the majority of her life. Doris was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville where she faithfully attended.

She is survived by her children, Gary (Ann) Wedl of Ramsey and Cindy (Tim) McKliget of St. Paul; five grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren; and extended family and friends.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerald; and two brothers.

Barbara F. “Barb” Johnson, age 85 of Grey Eagle passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 at the Highland Senior Living in Little Falls, Minnesota.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 6 at the PattonSchad Funeral Home in Grey Eagle with Rev. Kevin Zeller officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Grey Eagle.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m.

Friday at the funeral home.

Barbara Fay Ainali was born January 3, 1937 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to George and Ruth (Murphy) Ainali.

She was united in marriage to Vernard Johnson on May 17, 1953 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle. Barb helped with catering and worked at the school cafeteria and the Senior Center in Minneapolis. She enjoyed crocheting, flower gardening, and taking many car trips with her husband seeing the countryside.

Barb had no children, but was a wonderful, loving aunt to her many nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernard Johnson; parents; and siblings, John Ainali, Arlene Hiltunen, Elaine Hartsworm, and Louise Hagstrom.

Rebecca R. Ottman

Rebecca R. “Beckie” Ottman, age 70 of Avon, was called home to the Lord on Wednesday, April 27, 2022 after an eighteen-month battle with cancer.

She passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be at noon on Thursday, May 5, 2022 at Faith Lutheran Church in Little Falls, with visitation beginning at 10:00 am. Inurnment will follow at Faith Lutheran Columbarium.

Beckie was born on August 5, 1951 in Little Falls to Ray and Diddie (Brastad) Hines.

She graduated from Little Falls High School in 1969. She attended UMD and SCSU. Beckie married Roger Ottman on May 10, 1975 in Little Falls. They resided in Arizona for one year before returning to Central MN. They settled in the Avon area in 1976. Beckie was employed at Dayton’s, and co-owned and operated Ottman Photography with Roger from 1974 to 2004. She was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church serving in various roles.

Beckie’s love of family was definitely her top priority. She will be fondly remembered as a loving and devoted wife, sister, daughter, mother, and grandmother who especially enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren. In addition to her family and spending time at the lake cabin, Beckie’s other passions included quilting, sewing, and gardening; all of which she excelled at. To say that Beckie was strong-willed would be an understatement.

She is survived by her husband of almost 47 years, Roger; children, Josh (Nicole) of Rice; Alexandre “Ali” (Joe) Kieffer of Coon Rapids; grandchildren, Emily and Alex Ottman; mother, Diddie Hines of Little Falls; brothers, Roger (Ruth) Hines of Waseca; Gary (Kathy) Hines of St. Cloud; Tim (Jean) Hines of Avon; sisterin-law, Linda “Cloud” Ottman of Hackensack; as well as several nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Beckie was preceded in death by her father, Ray in 1982; and nephew, Matthew Hines in 2010.

Ruby Elaine Merdan

Ruby Elaine Merdan was welcomed into this world on October 22, 2021, at the Maple Grove Hospital.

She immediately touched the lives of so many around her and was deeply loved by family and friends. While her time with us was far too short, she taught us many life lessons.

Her infectious smile could light up a room and the resilience and fight she demonstrated during her health challenges will always be remembered.

On Tuesday April 19, 2022, at 11:58 am Ruby passed away peacefully in her parents arms at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis.

She is survived by her parents, Chad and Sarah (Woodstock) Merdan of Avon, MN; brothers and sisters, Anna Merdan, Logan Merdan, McKenzie Merdan, and Everett Merdan; She is also survived by her grandparents, Sandra (Gary) Hansen, William Woodstock, Karen Woodstock and Kay Merdan; great-grandparents Ruth Ann (Nole Cook) Montgomery, Stephen (Gloria) Conners and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her grandfather Robert Merdan, great-grandparents Richard Woodstock Sr., Shirley McGuire, Phillip Montgomery, Andrew & Frances Merdan, Louis and Rosella Terwey, and cousins Ashley Neild and Dana Feld.

Linus T. Vos

Linus T. Vos, age 84, of Albany, passed away on April 24 at CentraCare Health in Sauk Centre. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, April 30 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony. Burial was at the St. Anthony parish cemetery.

Linus was born on August 3, 1937, to Bernard and Hildegard (Ricker) Vos in Albany. He married Doris Tschida on August 19, 1961, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon. Their union was blessed with three children, Cindy, Tammy, and Joel.

Linus loved the farm life with Doris. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, trapping, and hunting. He also enjoyed fox hunting with his brother, Melvin. Linus faithfully watched the MN Twins. He enjoyed sweets and spending time with his family. Linus prayed the rosary and loved sharing his love for God with his family.

Linus will be remembered by his children, Tamara (Gary) Fischer of Albany, Joel (Diedra) Vos of Hutchinson; 12 grandchildren, 14 greatgrandchildren, brother, Wilfred Vos and sister, Valaria Lehner.

Preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 50 years, Doris, daughter, Cynthia Fleischhacker, brothers and sisters, LeRoy Vos, Othmar Vos, Marion Vos, Elizabeth Olson, Melvin Vos and Marcella Vos.

Your first thought might be, I wonder what is going to happen to those kids when they grow up. Here is the scene… one child has a toy truck and is perfectly content. He is driving his toy truck… sound effects and all. If a second child enters his space, and starts to play with a different truck, the first child will drop the toy he has and go for the one that the other child just grabbed. The scene may even get violent as the first child goes for the toy.

Adults do the same sort of thing, only its more refined. It might be in the form of job advancements, or relationships, or even the plate of cookies (which one is bigger).

we are filled with the Holy Spirit. In our world there are basically two kinds of people, those who follow their sinful, selfish, natural ways; and those who follow the Spirit that lives inside them. Galatians 5:19-21 talk about the acts of the sinful nature being obvious, just like watching two-year old. “… sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.” Instead of acting out our fleshly desires, Galatians 5:22-24 tell us to crucify those desires and live according to the Spirit. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires…”

I think it is interesting that Galatians 5:17 says that these two are at odds with each other. In fact, they are in “conflict with each other.” We need the Spirit, to combat the worldly ways. So lest you think it come naturally, beware and pursue righteousness.

By Steve Borgerding Melrose Area Cub Scout Pack 68 held their annual Blue & Gold Banquet on Tuesday, March 22, at the Melrose American Legion. The evening’s meeting began with a short talk by Bob Rueter, the Central Minnesota Council Representative.

The American Legion Commander, Linda Budde, spoke to the Cub Scouts and families. The Cub Scouts were called to the stage one by one to receive their awards and special recognition.

A surprise guest made the evening more special for the Cub Scouts and family members. A member of the Central Garrison of the 501st Legion was in attendance for this event. The Central Garrison is a Minnesota based unit of the 501st Legion, an all-volunteer, international Star Wars costuming club. RC-19919, a Repubilc Commando, (alias Sully Bieber) was on hand to watch over the Cub Scouts as they received their awards, to speak and answer

questions, and to offer photo opportunities after the meeting. He even escorted Legion Commander Budde to the stage for her talk. Some of the younger Scouts were not sure what to make of this very tall clone trooper but they warmed up to him very quickly. A lot of photos were taken during and after this event.

Cub Scouting is a program of the Boy Scouts of America that is open to children from kindergarten to fifth grade. Cub Scout Pack 68 is celebrating their 43rd year of continuous program in Melrose this year.

Dear Motor Medics, The wipers on all of my vehicles never seem to do the job and I’m looking for some answers. How long do wiper blades last? What are the best kinds to buy?

How do you change them? And probably the most important one of all; I’ve had the rear wiper on my van changed several times and it still leaves a missed spot on the center of the glass. Guys, I know you can help all of us who suffer with poor wipers.

-Deborah in Larchwood, Iowa Dear Deborah, Many vehicles on the road have poor wipers. Either they have just not been looked after or they have only been partially repaired.

Most good quality wiper blades will last about a year but with weather conditions can deteriorate in less time. We always recommend the best quality name brand blades you can find and they are not that expensive. You can change them at home on most vehicles.

Instructions are usually included and most require no tools. The following is important!

The blades are not the only part of the wiper. The arms need to be working correctly or the blade will never do its job. If they are bent or they don’t move on their hinge freely they won’t apply proper pressure to the blade and that’s likely the issue with your vans rear blade. If the arm is bad parts stores usually carry the entire arm to resolve your issue.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2006 Jeep Liberty and it has been steadily losing power over the past several months. I took it in to more than one shop and they could not find the issue. After the power

loss became so bad that I could not reach more than 50mph I took it to another shop who diagnosed it as plugged catalytic convertors.

Since they want about $1000.00 to replace them, I have parked it until I can find out more about them. What is a catalytic convertor and do they normally fail with only 70,000 miles?

When I do replace them? Is there a way to save some money such as a used part?

The convertors contain small passages that can become plugged due to oil burning, poor state of tune which results in unburned fuel reaching the convertor, or poor-quality construction. We see less failure in vehicles that are well maintained.

They can fail at low mileage but there may be good news for you. The emissions warranty on a convertor is usually eight years or eighty thousand miles. You may be eligible for a free replacement. You need to check with a Jeep dealer to find out if you’re covered. Used units can’t be sold so check with exhaust shops for cheaper aftermarket alternatives.

Grey Eagle Township • April 4, 2022 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 pm. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus, Mike Rohe, Erv Herdering and Jeremy Kerzman.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: Mike made the motion to accept the March 7, 2022 minutes. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Building Improvements- Jeremy Kerzman was present to share some options for the back room of the town hall. Could cover the blocks with steel and spray foam the inside.

Could take down the blocks, which are in bad shape and rebuild the walls. This would allow for a better option to remove the concrete and replace and level it. A new door would be an option to the east side, this would avoid ice build up in winter and a better access. Another plan was to switch to natural gas to save on heating costs. Ray made a motion to go ahead with removing the concrete blocks and redoing the walls with a door on the east side provided we get approval from the city and the post office. Also to switch to natural gas.

Mike made the second, All in favor. Motion carried.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for March. Claims list included claims 3665-3675 for a total of $22,468.60. This includes the 1st half of the fire contract. Mike made the motion to pay the claims. Ray made the second. All in favor. Motion carried. Mail included a P&Z letter and a letter University from Minnesota Local Transportation. Ron had a survey request from the US Census Bureau.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray stated he had contacted the crack filling company – Brakken has three holes and 341st has at least two holes to fill. 130th has a culvert that that needs to be cleaned out. Ascot road where Ray checked the culvert is not the Township’s.

Ray reported he had asked a property owner to not park on the roadway (130th) as it is a narrow road. Asked Erv to start pulling in the edges of the gravel roads before it gets too dry.

Weed meeting is set for April 13, 2022 at Browerville, Ray will attend.

Road check was set for April 22, at 9:00 am.

Dust control notice and beach maintenance will be sent to papers and posted.

Dust control cost for 2022 is at $82.00 per 100 ft. Mike made a motion to accept that bid.

Ray made the second. Motion carried. Cost to property owners will be cost shared at $41.00 per hundred ft. Gravel bid was at $9.65 a yard.

The meeting was called to order at 7:01 p.m. by Clerk Shirley Hulinsky. Members present include Supervisors Bruce Johnson, Mike Berscheit and Joe Muellner; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; and Treasurer Pam Throener. Also present was Erv Herdering.

Newly re-elected officers were sworn in before this meeting.

Sup. Johnson made a motion to select Mike Berscheit as chair for this term. Motion was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Sup. Muellner made a motion to select Bruce Johnson as vice chair.

Motions passed.

The minutes from the regular meeting of February 22, 2022 were approved on a motion

For correspondence the township received letters from US Census about another survey, notices of local weed inspection training meeting on April 13, online short course training for township officers, road maintenance information, and resident concerns on 321st Ave cart-way condition. Sup. Johnson suggested we get more road closed and caution signs to use when road conditions are poor.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 6213 through 6234 totaling $27,949.35. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion.

As part of the reorganization after the annual meeting and elections the board discussed wages.

Sup. Berscheit made a motion to set wages at $25 per hour for use of chainsaw, skid steer or other such power equipment, other hourly wages will be $15 per hour. Other monthly wages will remain the same at $80 for supervisors and treasurer, $225 for clerk. Extra meetings during a month that the township hosts will be $80. Motion was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Sup. Berscheit set the mileage rate as the current IRS rate. Sup. Muellner seconded the vote. Sup. Berscheit made a motion to have the regular township meetings as the last Tuesday of the month at 7 pm in the Burtrum Community Center. Motion was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Sup. Johnson motioned to have the Long Prairie Leader as our official publishing paper and the Burtrum Fire Bell bulletin board as the official posting site. Motion was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. After discussion, the gopher bounty was set at $3 per tail for gophers trapped in Burnhamville Township on a motion

In the road report two culverts needed to be steamed open and 210th Street needed a culvert replaced. Most of the spring thaw is going slow and okay. After reviewing bids, Sup. Berscheit made a motion to approve the dust control contract with Herdering, Inc. for $0.82 per foot at 18 feet wide. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion.

Notice Roadside Spraying

Stearns County Engineer Beginning in May, Stearns County Highway Department, as part of its vegetation management program, will be scheduling some roadside vegetation work along all Stearns County highways. The unwanted brush and noxious weeds will be cut and/or treated with herbicide.

This notice is to inform all property owners which have property abutting county roads of the work we have scheduled and their right to use alternative methods.

Our goals are to eliminate the brush and noxious weeds and to promote grass cover along the roadside. Brush along the road reduces driving visibility, obstructs road signs, and reduces driver reaction time to crossing wildlife. Brush presents maintenance problems by retaining water along the roadbed, obstructing ditches, and damaging equipment.

During spray operation, we will take care to avoid sensitive areas adjacent to the right-of-way such as tree plantations, ornamental plantings, crops, gardens, front yards, lakes, and streams.

The Crisis At Our Southern Border

By Roger Lahr Title 42 of the Public Health Code restricts entry into the U.S. during a public health emergency. In March of 2020, the Trump administration implemented this policy in response to Covid-19. It proved to be highly effective in stemming the flow of illegal immigrants. It is set to expire on May 23rd.

Bill reducing unemployment tax for employers approved Bumping up against a hard deadline of April 30, the Legislature last week passed and the governor signed into law a bill that fully replenishes the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund. In addition, the Hero Worker Pay Bill was passed at the same time, and it provides $500 million in one-time payments to frontline workers in Minnesota. It was a somewhat rocky road, but compromise and hard work led to the agreement that lowers the unemployment tax rate on all businesses in the state.

Because of all the shutdowns during the pandemic, applications for unemployment benefits increased greatly. The fund that pays those benefits actually went into a deficit situation and had to borrow money from the federal government to stay afloat. The deficit was around $1 billion and the interest payment to the feds was somewhere in the neighborhood of $60,000 per day!

Businesses were facing up to a five-fold increase in the rate they pay into the fund.

Now, with the fund replenished, the base rate will revert back to its original amount. The higher rate actually went into effect back in January but the payments were not due until last week. Those who have already paid their first quarter premium at the higher rate will get either a refund or a credit back from the state.

Minnesota has about 130,000 employers, and they will all need to have their first quarter UI tax amount recalculated. Letters will be sent out to businesses once that recalculation has been completed. Refunds are not going to be automatic, and those businesses requesting refunds may not see them for several months, depending on the volume of processing.

Around 667,000 workers have been deemed as ‘frontline” and are eligible for the stipend from the state, which will be around $750 per person. Basically, 15 industries were designated, and workers in those areas are in line for the money. Broadly, those industries include healthcare, grocery stores, food service and those in child care.

Further defining the areas, those in longterm and home care are eligible, as are healthcare and emergency responders. Public health, courts and corrections, along with schools are eligible. Others are those in food service and delivery, retail, building services and public transit. Lastly, those working in ground and air transportation, manufacturing and vocational rehabilitation are also named as frontline workers.

To be eligible, one must have worked in one of these areas for at least three weeks between March of 2020 and June of 2021. Details of the application process are still being worked out. And payments could take the form of either a check, debit card or direct deposit.

Many of the supplemental budget bills were passed off the House floor last week, with only two, health and human services, along with the tax bill, awaiting action this week.

Conference committees will then have the task of reconciling differences in the bills. It’s going to be difficult as the spending amounts and policy items in the House and Senate versions are, in some cases vastly different.
