When Henry Ford said those oh-so-true words, he wasn’t just talking about himself -- even though he is the epitome of determination. He went belly-up several times, but never lost sight of his goal. He believed in himself and in what he was doing. In the end, he was so right.

Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t accomplish your goals. Who says you’re not tougher, better, harder working, smarter and more able than your competition? It doesn’t matter if they say you can’t do it. The only thing that matters is if you say it. If you believe in yourself, there’s hardly anything you can’t accomplish.

Most actors fail before they succeed.

Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman were both voted by their acting classmates as the “Least Likely to Succeed.”

And how many of those classmates can boast an Academy Award? Woody Allen failed in both the motion picture production classes he attended in college.

Lucky for him, his film audiences gave him better grades. Harrison Ford was told by movie executives that he simply didn’t have what it takes to be a star. Of course, he proved them wrong by starring in the Star Wars trilogy, the Indiana Jones series, and a string of movies that have grossed over $6 billion!

Some of the most successful singers in history have overcome bumpy starts as well. Diana Ross and the Supremes were flops on their first nine records, but the tenth took them to the top of the charts. After only one performance, Elvis Presley was fired in 1954 by Jimmy Denny, manager of the Grand Ole Opry, who told him, “You ain’t going nowhere, son. You ought to go back to driving a truck.” One recording company executive told The Beatles, “We don’t like their sound, and guitar music is on the way out.”

What part of “no” didn’t these people understand? The part that said “no confidence.” They had every confidence that they could achieve and succeed.

Business legends are no different.

We all know about inspirational success stories like Bill Gates, Col. Harlan Sanders and R.H. Macy.

But do you know about Soichiro Honda? Many of you have driven his

cars, used his lawn mowers and ridden his motorcycles. Honda was turned down by Toyota Motor Corporation for a job as an engineer, so he started making scooters and finally started his own company. Honda Corporation says: “We see the world not as it is, but as it could be. We see the world through the eyes of dreamers. Because we are a company founded by a dreamer. And we are a company built on dreams.”

As I’ve said so many times, if we want to triple our success ratio ... we might have to triple our failure rate.

Surround yourself with top-quality people and truly listen to their input.

Don’t wait until it’s too late to change.

Start to take the true measure of your success now. What do you possess that you can offer to other people, to your community, to the world?

To simply ask the question, “How can I make a difference?” is to answer it, because the answer is to never let yourself stop asking the question.

I’ve asked myself that question hundreds of times. Maybe thousands. And any time I feel like quitting I just look at a framed poster I have hanging in our office: • He failed in business in ‘31.

• He ran as a state legislator and lost in ‘32.

• He tried business again in ‘33 and failed again.

• His sweetheart died in ‘35.

• He had a nervous breakdown in ‘36.

By Peggy Rieland, Senior LinkAge Coordinator, Central MN Council on Aging Funding cuts in Senate File 760 will lead to a severe reduction in services provided by the Senior LinkAge Line®. This comes at a time when more people are aging and their ability to live at home independently often hinges on whether they can access services in their community.

As a Senior LinkAge Coordinator, I have been fortunate over the past twelve years to assist older adults and persons with disabilities and their family members in understanding their Medicare options. Medicare has designated the Senior LinkAge Line® as the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) in Minnesota. SHIP programs provide non-biased health insurance counseling to Medicare beneficiaries. In addition to health insurance counseling

the Senior LinkAge Line® also makes it possible for people to remain in their own homes by locating resources and services which help them to be as independent as possible. Because the Senior LinkAge Line® is helping people return successfully to their homes from a nursing home, these cuts will also lead to the loss of savings and in fact, cost the state money. The cuts will reduce our ability to serve Medicare beneficiaries and their families by 50 percent. Navigating the Medicare maze and accessing services can be daunting and intimidating.

This man never quit. He kept trying till the last. In 1860, this man -- Abraham Lincoln -- was elected president of the United States.

Benefit for MN Schools, “Play It Forward: Classical MPR’s Musical Instrument Drive”

Obituary Laurie Brown Freeman A memorial service was held at 12 PM, Saturday, April 30th at the Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan in Sauk Centre, Minnesota for Laurie Brown (Hird) Freeman, age 71 of Grey Eagle, with a reception that followed at the Rock Tavern on Big Birch Lake. A private internment will take place at a later date.

Laurie Brown Hird was born April 20, 1940 in San Diego, CA. As the daughter of a naval officer, she traveled the country in her youth, but her favorite home was Hawaii, on the island of Oahu, where she attended High School at the Punahou School in Honolulu. She always remained a Hawaiian girl at heart. Laurie graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1962, worked as a medical technologist in San Diego, CA, and was united in marriage there to Ralph Freeman in 1965. They

moved to Minnesota in 1967. Residences there included Graceville, Canby, and Little Falls, where they lived from 19751990. Her one constant home was always ‘The Cabin’ on Big Birch Lake, in Grey Eagle, MN, where she spent summers as a child, and continued to do so throughout her life. She passed away peacefully at home on Big Birch Lake, on the morning of April 27, 2011 surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She is survived by her loving husband Ralph Freeman, mother Mary Clark Hird of Sauk Centre, daughter Candace Panner of Eugene, OR, sons Jason (Laure) of Sartell, MN, Jody (Jill), of Elk River, MN, and Mitchell (Elizabeth) of St. Cloud.

Also her two sisters, Sally (Bob) Hughes of Murfreesboro, TN and Julia (Tom) Zaborski of Osh Kosh, WI, and step-son Jeff (Sue) Freeman of Decatur, IL. Laurie is also survived by 11 grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Louis Rittenhouse Hird.

Her warm and generous spirit, love of life and family, and great sense of humour will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

K-12 Dress Code: One issue that public schools need to address is dress code for students with the objective of creating a school atmosphere that allows students to focus on their studies without trampling on the free speech rights guaranteed by the First Amendment. It is also important that school policies generally reflect the thoughts of community while still meeting state and federal legal requirements. This week’s column will briefly address this issue.

A full copy of the proposed dress code is available on the LPGE website (www.lpge. k12.mn.us) and a copy with one line inadvertently omitted was in the most recent school newsletter. Readers are encouraged to refer to those sources and provide feedback to this writer and/or members of the School Board.

This issue will be discussed at the May 16th Board meeting and will be part of the student handbooks that will finalized in June and will be effective with the 2011-12 school year.

Classical Minnesota Public Radio, in partnership with the Minnesota Music Educators Association (MMEA), presents its second-annual benefit for Minnesota schools, “Play It Forward: Classical MPR’s Musical Instrument Drive.” The program will run May 2-31, 2011.

The drive establishes local Minnesota schools as drop-off points for individuals to donate their gently used instruments. As of April 26, more than 260 schools have signed up to participate in this year’s drive.

“Last year’s response was so amazing, more than 600 donations to over 300 schools, that doing it again was a ‘no-brainer,’” says Daniel Gilliam, program director for Classical MPR. “For us, putting instruments into the hands of young people, who need and want to play music, is a higher

calling.”

This year’s drive will be held during the month of May. Donors will again be able to give their instruments directly to the school of their choice. They can visit: http://minnesota.publicradio.org/radio/services/cms/ playitforward/map.shtml and enter their zip code to find out which schools are accepting instruments, and the donation drop-off times. Donations will be tax deductible, and donors are responsible for assessing the value of their own instrument. Swanville High School is one of the local schools participating with the program.

Schools are accepting brass, woodwinds, string instruments, concert percussion (snare drums), and acoustic guitars.

Each school will determine which instruments it needs.

May 2, 2011: At 5:46 p.m., Gary Eggerth from Upsala called to report a theft from his property in Grey Eagle Township, Sect. 13. An older model New Holland small square baler had been taken between the dates of April 29-May 2. The Todd County Sheriff’s Office received information that the baler had been sold to a scrap iron yard. After further investigation, a juvenile male was arrested in connection to the theft of the baler. The incident is still under investigation and is being reviewed by the Todd County Attorney’s Office.

May 3, 2011: Sometime over night person(s) unknown entered the Smith farm yard at 32013 Co 28 and stole approx. 80 gallons of gasoline from a locked fuel barrel. The incident is under investigation.

May 3, 2011: Two cabin burglaries were reported on Dunlin Road, on the east side of Long Lake in rural Burtrum.

Sometime between the evening of May 1 and the morning of May 3, someone broke into a cabin and unattached garage, stealing 15 gallons of gas drained from gas cans and a jar of change. A garage at a neighboring cabin was broken into and gas was siphoned from an off road vehicle and snowblower.

April 28, 2011: At 6:13 p.m. Shawn Ehlert, owner of Shipwrex Bar on County Road 103, Grey Eagle Township, called to report some damage that had occurred to the establishment. The attempt occurred on the night of April 26 and early hours on April 27. The incident is under investigation and if you have information, please call the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.

April 30, 2011: The Todd County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report phone scam in which a Todd County resident was scammed out of a large amount of money. The caller identified himself as a family member of the victim and stated that he was in need of money for bail and other damages as a result of a traffic accident in Mexico. The Todd County Sheriff’s Office encourages people to be cautious of these situations and encourages residents to avoid sending money to people unless they are absolutely certain of where it is going. The suspect(s) will often have detailed information about a family member or friend. If you receive any phone calls, emails, or paper mail that you

When a Man has a cold

By Saralee Perel Years ago, my husband Bob had a catastrophic illness: a cold.

Recently, he’s had another. Plus a splinter in his left thumb. You can’t imagine such screaming and suffering. And I’m referring to myself.

Please understand that I’m a very nurturing person, but Bob’s insane.

I mistakenly said, “You’ll be OK, sweetheart.” Hence, he needed to prove how critically ill he really was.

He flung himself on the bed and grabbed a Kleenex. He blew his nose without using his thumb. “This splinter’s grueling,” he moaned.

“I took it out 5 days ago.”

“I’ve got gangrene.”

I checked. No remnants of the splinter. “It’s healed,” I said.

“Then it’s the other thumb.” I wouldn’t look. I researched gangrene on the net. (You never know.) He didn’t have it. I lied, “If it’s gangrene, the opposite thumb gets numb.” Mistake.

He tried blowing his nose. “Now I can’t. One thumb’s got gangrene and the other’s numb.”

“You’re not going to ask me what I think you’re going to ask me to do.

Right?”

“My nose is running,” he whined.

“Please help?” I didn’t. He put the Kleenex on MY pillow, stuck his face in it, and blew his nose.

“It’s not gangrene, Bob.” “Then why is my thumb numb?”

“Because your brain’s numb.”

“Oh God! What’s that called?

“Lunacy.”

I took his temperature. Mistake. It was normal. So I told him. Bigger mistake. He tried to stand but pretended he couldn’t. He did the dying swan thing as he ever-so-slowly collapsed back on the bed.

“How about TV?” I said, putting the remote in his hand. He looked like I had asked him to swim the English Channel – underwater – on his back - twice. He feigned weakness. He held the remote like it weighed 11 tons, then dropped it.

He reached to pick it up, then continued to roll toward the floor, where he remained, curled in a fetal position and began a long drawn out coyote-type howl.

I lugged him back onto the bed and said, “You’re not unconscious. There’s nothing to do; so watch TV.” He passed out.

I whispered his favorite food, “Pepperoni pizza.” He sat right up, looked at his watch and said, “How long have I been out?”

Realizing my approach had been wrong all along, I said, “Four days, hon-

Just calling to say I love you.” Then she “forgets” that she hasn’t quite hung up the phone. After she’s said goodbye, we’ve heard variations of, “You lousy rotten stinkers.” Her last ended with, “Shove it . . . .” If I named the body part she wanted us to place something into, Hometown News won’t print this.

After Bob finished his pizza, I said, “How are you feeling, you poor thing?”

“Oy vay.” He’s not Jewish. “I’m not sure I’ll pull though.”

“And your thumbs, my sweetheart?”

“Awful. Now my feet are numb too.”

“Honey, I’ll call the EMTs.” He sighed. “No. I won’t live long enough for them to get here.”

I started dialing. “Who are you calling?” he said.

“Sweets, if you’re this sick, you should tell your mother.”

And with that, he hopped out of bed, grabbed the phone, hung it up and said, “Suddenly I feel great!” Somehow, I knew he would.

Upsala Jr. High April Student of the Month The Upsala School staff is proud to honor Audrey Schleper as Upsala School’s April Junior High Student of the Month. Audrey is the eighth grade daughter of Mark and Gretchen Schleper. She lives in rural Upsala with her parents and sister, Marjorie.

Audrey is an active member of her school and community. Since elementary school she has participated in band, theater, and spelling bees. Upon entering junior high, Audrey added even more

activities to her already busy schedule.

Earlier this year she participated in the school play, the musical, and the tennis team and currently plays outfield on the junior high softball team. Audrey also has earned first chair flute in band. In seventh grade, she joined FFA, which she feels has helped her gain confidence by making her step out of her comfort zone. It has also taught her leadership skills.

Audrey does well in her studies, which has earned her a consistent place on the A Honor Roll. Her favorite class is Civics, because she enjoys learning about history and feels her teacher, Roxann Lewis, makes the class enjoyable.

Ms. Lewis believes Audrey “is a very conscientious, meticulous, and driven individual who is also very personable.

She consistently demonstrates an eagerness to learn and a work ethic far beyond her years. She is a great asset to my class and a pleasure to work with.”

When Audrey isn’t busy with school activities, she finds many other things to occupy her time. She enjoys horseback riding, knitting, embroidery, one-stroke painting, and cooking. Her favorite kitchen adventures include anything to do with pasta.

role and was named Captain in three of them. In high school Brooke has always been on the A or B Honor Roll and she is also a member of the National Honor Society.

Her favorite class is art, mostly because it is so relaxing. The teacher and other students make the class really fun.

Social problems class is also one to be mentioned, as she is able to learn what is happening in the world and give thought as to how to solve those problems.

Brooke is heading out this fall to a two year college to fulfill her generals, and then she will transfer to a four year school to finish her major.

Brooke advises her classmates and underclassmen to not try to please everyone, only do what you can handle, no matter what, people will always be proud of you.

A press conference last week announced that Republicans would attempt to put the socalled Marriage Amendment on the ballot in 2012 for the voters of Minnesota to decide, once and for all. If the measure is passed by both houses of the Legislature, it would go directly to the state’s voters next fall in the form of a constitutional ballot question. The reason for doing this is, simply, to let the people decide. The question has been raised about the timing of this announcement in relation to getting the state’s budget balanced. The major finance bills have all been passed in both chambers, with one (the agriculture bill) having been signed into law by the Governor. The others are all in various stages of conference committee action. The natural resources conference committee, for example, began meeting last week and had both the DNR and MPCA commissioners taking part in negotiations.

Deadline for policy bills was this past Friday, the 29th of April. Members of both houses were carrying items of legislation that needed to meet that deadline in order to move forward in the process. The Marriage Amendment bill was one of them. Should this pass, wording on the 2012 election ballot would read: “Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to provide that only the union of one man and one woman will be recognized as a marriage in Minnesota?”

I recently signed onto the bill that provides a framework for the construction of a new domed stadium that the Minnesota Vikings football team would

play in. One year remains on the team’s lease to play its games at the 29-year old Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis, and Viking officials have said they won’t sign another.

Under this plan, funding of the project would come from three areas. Total cost is estimated to be around $900 million, with the state, the local hosting unit of government, and the Viking team each contributing one-third of the cost. Any over-runs would be the responsibility of the Vikings. The state’s contribution would include NO statewide sales or income tax increases, but would include such things as naming rights, a tax on licensed sports memorabilia, a tax on players’ salaries and luxury suites in the stadium, a football lottery game, and a tax on direct satellite television sports packages.

Three possible sites are being considered for the facility. One is in Arden Hills on a fairly large tract of land that was once a federal munitions plant. One drawback to that location is the need for infrastructure upgrades to the highway

system that would allow 65,000 fans to get into and out of the stadium in a reasonable time. The second is the Farmers Market location near the new Twins ballpark in downtown Minneapolis. This 20acre parcel would allow for the Twins, Vikings, and Timberwolves to play in the same area. And the third is the current site of the Metrodome, which would eventually be torn down if that location is selected.

Time is getting short to strike an agreement. A decision needs to be made soon on a local partner and the stadium location.

Local Municipality Minutes Swanville City April 5, 2011 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Community Center on Tuesday, April 5, 2011. The meeting called to order 7:30 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Peterson, AJ Johnson, Jim Molitor, and Jim Piekarski. Absent: Tim Grittner. Also present: Tina Snell and Brain Zapzalka.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held March 8, 2011 were read. AJ Johnson made a motion to accept the minutes as read. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given.

The Clerk will contact Waste Management to see if Saturday, May 7 will work for City Wide Cleanup day. The council alternate day would be April 30th. Flyers will be put up around the City to let residents know of the date, time and costs.

Mayor Peterson also presented the council with a resolution to support Todd County Fiberband.

Signing this resolution would show how many are interested in expanding the internet capabilities to rural Todd County. Council decided to table at this point.

A job description and employee policy booklet was looked at. Before adopting either policy the City Attorney will look over the booklets. Job schedules were also handed out to the clerk and maintenance man.

Retro street signs and poles were discussed. AJ Johnson made a motion to order 100 retro street signs through M & R Signs. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. The maintenance man will install the new signs when they come in.

Joining Minnesota Water/ Wastewater Utilities Agency Response Network (MnWARN) was discussed. The City will be at no financial obligation to join. If a disaster should arise, MnWarn would assist in the emergency and recovery.

There would be a cost reimbursement to the responding team that assists a city with the emergency.

Jim Piekarski made a motion to join MnWARN. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

A reminder was given to the Council of the Local Board of Equalization Meeting on April 26, 2011 at 3:00pm in the Community Center for city land in Todd and Morrison Counties.

The cage by the bus garage used to collect aluminum cans is beginning to be an eye sore especially when high winds occur. The Mayor will get in contact with the person in charge of the bin. If the bin is not emptied on a regular bases, it will have to be removed.

It was decided to advertise the old city plow truck on sealed bids until 5:00 p.m. on June 7, 2011.

New lawnmowers were discussed. Jim Molitor will have more prices and information for the next meeting.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the Council were furnished with a listing. Jim Piekarski made a motion to approve the claims. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next monthly meeting will be held May 3, 2011, 7:30 p.m.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Jim Piekarski and seconded by Jim Molitor to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Meeting adjourned 8:50pm.

Changes Worth Making -By Dr. John C. Maxwell

Comfort lulls us into c o m p l a c e n c y.

We get accustomed to routine or familiar with a role, so we settle in. As leaders, we must relentlessly challenge ourselves not to let ease and security dissuade us from making the changes necessary to fulfill our vision.

Perhaps the most difficult transition I chose to make as a leader came when I resigned from Skyline Wesleyan Church in 1995. I was perceived as a respected leader within the denomination, and my reputation with the church congregation was stellar. The city of San Diego was a great place to live, and both financially and professionally I was doing well. Yet, I knew that I had not yet tapped into my full potential.

I aspired to train leaders domestically and internationally, and I could not give that vision the time it required while leading the church. It was tempting to let go of my vision in order to stay in a safe and successful position. Yet, I understood that to achieve the growth I desired as a leader, I would have to make the change.

TRADING UP Life is a series of tradeoffs. If we’re going to grow as influencers, then at different junctures of life, we’re going to have to let go of what we have to take hold of something better. We must give

When we’re just starting out in life, the tradeoffs are relatively painless.

Having barely established ourselves, it’s easy to part with our present situation so that we can pursue opportunities to expand our influence. However, the higher we go, the tougher the tradeoffs become. We get attached to what we’ve built and become invested in our success.

To illustrate, consider the process of moving to another city. Relocation isn’t tough when you can pack all of your belongings in your car. However, moving no longer comes as easily when you own a nice home with a big yard in a great neighborhood. The more we have, the more averse we become to change.

I’d like to recommend three tradeoffs you ought to be willing to make in order to reach your potential as a leader. Each involves risk and requires change, but all are more than worth the effort.

1) Exchange Affirmation for Accomplishment Stop being a people-pleaser. If you always say yes when you would rather say no, then you will find yourself unhappily going through the motions of living, giving control of your time, energy, and spirit to anyone who asks for it. Fundamentally, leadership involves serving others and adding value to them. However, you do that best by proactively and strategically contributing your strengths, not by passively allowing others to dictate how you spend your time.

Security can be tough to pass up.

We like the certainty that comes with being in a stable job, making a steady income. Yet, significance usually calls for risk. It involves stepping away from familiar territory in order to explore new lands. To be a pioneering leader, you have to change your attitude toward uncertainty; otherwise you will confine your influence.

3) Trade Immediate Victory for Long-Term Sustainability To excel as a leader, you have to change the timeframe in which you view success. If you measure your performance solely in terms of immediate results, then you run the risk of giving up when times are tough.

Also, when you only concern yourself with present professional achievement, you tend to neglect relationships, ignore your health, and lose all sense of worklife boundaries.

Summary Staying the same means stagnating.

Leaders must plunge bravely into the future to avoid bogging down in complacency. Rather than fearing change, embrace the possibility it offers.

Uprising! A Conversation with Author Candace Simar: Monday, May 9, 6:30-8 p.m. for teens and adults at the Upsala Public Library. Minnesota author and historian Candace Simar will speak about the Native American uprising of 1862.

The Pages of Music duo Rolf and Carrie will present The Remarkable Music Machine at the Upsala Elementary School on Tuesday, May 10, 1:15 to 2:30 p.m. for students in grades 4-6.
