Encouragement unleashes potential -By Harvey Mackay T h o m a s Edison’s teacher said he was a poor student.

His mother was furious at that characterization and took him out of school and taught him at home.

Edison gave this account of the incident in an interview published on Nov. 29, 1907: “One day I overheard the teacher tell the inspector that I was ‘addled’ and it would not be worthwhile keeping me in school any longer. I was so hurt by this last straw that I burst out crying and went home and told my mother about it. Then I found out what a good thing a good mother is.

“She came out as my strong defender. Mother love was aroused, mother pride wounded to the quick. She brought me back to school and angrily told the teacher that he didn’t know what he was talking about, that I had more brains than he himself, and a lot more talk like that.”

A positive word of encouragement can help change anyone’s destiny.

In many ways, Mrs. Edison was a genius herself, at least at motivating and encouraging her son. Did she know that he would become one of the most prolific inventors and thinkers in history? Perhaps not, but she wasn’t going to risk limiting his potential the way his unfeeling teacher was willing to.

In the same vein, good managers have a responsibility to offer encouragement to workers to help them achieve at their maximum level.

Otherwise, why would they bother to hire and pay people to do just enough to get by?

Encouragement and motivation go hand in hand, but they are not the same. Motivation is more general – cheerleading, if you will, getting people excited and primed to take on or continue a project.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Burial Grounds

Human beings have lived and died in Central Minnesota for about 10,000 years. Prior to that time, the last glacier covered all of Minnesota except the southeastern and the southwestern parts of the state.

As the glacial ice melted, it created much water, which gathered into lakes, rivers or evaporated, making the area more suitable for human occupation. Most of the early inhabitants spent much of their time traveling to different camping locations, following the seasonal change in fish, plant and wildlife food supply. While moving around to different areas, some of the people died. The bodies were usually placed in an underground location, which sometimes consisted of a “burial mound.” Some ancient burial mounds still exist, but many were buried in the ground in an unmarked grave. Up to about 100 years ago, many of our early settlers were still buried in a location on land they owned. Going back to those times, we find that many headstones didn’t exist or were only a wood marker that disappeared over the years. These burial sites are today being made into fields, roads or housing developments.

Sometimes they are never noticed, but if they are found, their location needs to be reported to proper authorities.

The idea for this story came from a reader in Avon, who spoke of an Indian burial location near her home.

The site was accidentally discovered when creating a foundation for a new business in Avon. While digging the foundation, bones of an Indian lady were uncovered. It was determined that the body should not be moved, so the foundation of the building was changed so as not to disturb the body.

When highway 287 was being built between Grey Eagle and Long Prairie, the crew dug into a cemetery by accident. When remains began to appear some of the crew became extremely uncomfortable and left the job. It was later discovered that a church existed on that location back in the middle 1800’s and the road crew unknowingly dug into the church cemetery. A rather surprising discovery.

A burial grounds located on the Southeast corner of Big Birch Lake has 6 headstones. The owners of the land created their own burial location on their own property. The stones show that most of the people were originally from states east of here. It appears that the last person to be interred there was Kathy Rhode. Her burial was in 1927.

She was owner of the property and the adjacent property was owned by Gottlieb Link, who evidently died in 1915. Both of these individuals were

born in the 1840’s.

I hope you find some of this history to be interesting. I am fascinated with the names and times which are revealed at these old sites. Are some of the last names still found in the area? Did some of these sites reveal the individuals that first cleared and worked the land on which we are standing? Are they possibly a relative from many years ago? Maybe!!!

In 1850, Minnesota was primarily occupied by wondering Indian tribes, but during the next 90 years migrants began moving into this area. Actually not many of those original families stayed, but they were replaced by others hoping to find the opportunity the previous owners were hoping to find and so on and so on.

Top managers understand these basic truths about employee encouragement and motivation: “I want to feel important.” No one wants to feel like a number, interchangeable or easy to forget. Get to know your employees as people.

Find out what makes each one unique.

And show them you’re paying attention to their individuality.

“I need encouragement.” Even the best employees continue to flourish with positive feedback. Let them know what they’re doing right and how they can keep performing at a high level.

They will be grateful that you have noticed their work and keep up with efforts.

“I want to believe in you.”

Employees want to know they can trust you – your knowledge, your expertise and your word. Show that you are committed to helping them succeed and grow by listening, answering questions honestly and keeping your promises.

“I want to succeed.” Most employees want to do a good job, even if they don’t want to advance to upper management. Explain your expectations clearly, and give them the training and support they need so they

Wanted: Story Ideas from Stearns County

By Tom Kuehne, “The Good Old Days” Some of my readers are asking for some stories about the Stearns County area. My answer to that request is, I’d enjoy sharing some Stearns County history, but I need some help. I lived in St Cloud for 3 months in 1962. That is my only contact with Stearns County, other than having several high school friends from Stearns County.

In my younger days, I lived on a farm and if we traveled away from the area, it had to be for a reason that was more important than our farm work.

There weren’t many reasons that fell into that category. So I, like many of you, were limited in our knowledge of other areas, even though they were actually less than 40 miles away.

It would be very helpful to have input from readers located in the southern part of the Hometown News readership area. What was a memorable experience

Obituaries Linda M. Blackburn

Linda M. Blackburn, age 71 of Melrose, died Thursday, April 26, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Linda Marie Merfeld was born April 17, 1947 in San Diego, California to John and Lee (Henson) Merfeld. Linda loved the outdoors, taking walks with the dog, fishing, and watching

R u s s e l l Frederick, 86, of Long Prairie, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 20, 2018. Funeral services were held Thursday, April 26, 2018 at the Iten Funeral Home in Browerville with Pastor Brian Casey officiating.

Russell was born April 20, 1932, in Westport, MN to Reeve & Lulu (Judkins) Frederick.

He graduated from Villard High School in 1950. Russell worked 30+ years at Prudential Life Insurance Company where he advanced from Commissary to the positions of Computer Room Manager and Systems Analyst where he was responsible for hardware set up and the design of the computer room. He also held various other jobs: Moon Valley gravel pit, ski lodge, truck driving, rifle sighting, snow plowing and many other odd jobs. On July 23, 1955, Russell married Orletta Gritz of Staples, MN. They lived in Plymouth, MN until 1965 when they moved into the house he built himself in Chanhassen. In 1996 they retired to their farm in Long Prairie, which Russell called ‘Lonesome Pine,’ where he

her shows on television.

Survivors include her son, Michael “Todd” (Sandy) Blackburn of Melrose; three grandchildren, Kyle (Nicole), Whitney, and Kendra; three step grandchildren, Candice (Matt), Nick (Nicole), and Ashley (Scott); one great-grandchild, Teagan; nine step great-grandchildren, Kolter, Cheyanne, Bridger, Aspen, Derek, Devyn, Kason, Brooklyn, and Hannah; and brothers, Garland Merfeld of San Diego, California and David Merfeld of Seattle, Washington.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lee Merfeld.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Russell was a hard worker and wanted to be a farmer; dabbling in farming with horses, oats, corn, and hay. He loved to work on machines, mow lawn, blow snow, hunt prairie dogs, hunt and watch the deer, and play Yahtzee. Russell loved his farm where he added to the house, rebuilt the barn, and did a lot of clean up. He enjoyed cutting firewood and making trails on the farm.

Eulene was a farm wife all her life. They farmed east of Little Sauk.

Eulene enjoyed quilting, gardening, flowers, chickens, playing cards and games with family and friends. If you ever stopped at Eulene’s house, the coffee was always on and there was a batch of fresh cookies in the cookie jar.

Eulene is survived by her seven children, Mary (Dennis) Wilcox, Verndale, Gerald (Julia) Holmquist, Long Prairie, Leonard (Wanda) Holmquist, Long Prairie, Royce (Apryl) Holmquist, Long Prairie, Arlene (Edwin) Franklin, Wadena, David (Margret) Holmquist, Long Prairie, and Darrel (Lisa) Holmquist, Long Prairie; also 23 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren.

Eulene Bertha Triebenbach was born at home by the Head of the Lake, Osakis, Minnesota on March 15, 1931, the daughter of Alfred and Myrtle (Larson) Triebenbach.

As a young girl, she moved with her parents to a farm just north of Gutches Grove. Eulene married Gene Holmquist on her parent’s farm on September 17, 1948.

Gloriann M. Senart

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 AM on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon for Gloriann M. Senart, age 81, of Avon who passed away Sunday at the St. Cloud Hospital. Rev. Gregory Miller OSB will officiate and burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at church on Thursday.

Gloriann was born January 29, 1937 to Rudolph and Catherine (Kalla) Buttweiler. She married Ernest “Ernie” Senart on October 3, 1955 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Avon. Gloriann worked as a machinist at Columbia Gear for over 20 years until her retirement. She was a

member of Christian Mother’s and St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon.

Gloriann enjoyed gambling and annual trips to Las Vegas; collecting dolls, glass baskets, and elephants. She also enjoyed flower gardening, being social with friends and neighbors, and gathering as a family at the cabin on Upper Spunk Lake. Glorriann will be remembered as dedicated caregiver to her family. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Jim was an over the road truck driver who was the owner and operator of Renneker Trucking and most recently worked at Farmers Express. He enjoyed riding his Harley, playing cards, and antique cars. Jim had a unique sense of humor and when asked how he was doing, his response was always “Gotta go.”

Upsala High School Student of the Month Eric Staricka’s dedication to his own education and the education of those around him led to his being named as the March Senior High Student of the Month.

In Robotics and Shop classes, he has piloted new technologies and then helped younger students to learn those same tools. He has worked hard to apply to college and as many scholarships as he qualifies for. He is an exceptional student. He is the son of Joey and Dianne Staricka. His sister is Jessica.

Outside of school, Gerads enjoys playing with her brothers and dogs. In the summer, she enjoys camping and swimming. She also likes to bake and read. She is very excited to attend the upcoming Teen Lit Con in May. She serves her community by cleaning ditches near home during the summer and placing wreaths on the graves of veterans at Camp Ripley around Christmas.

In the future, Gerads plans to attend college to be a doctor or lawyer. Her advice for her classmates is “Never give up on yourself. You can accomplish more than you think.”

A little over a year ago we really started getting serious about it partially because of the City of Upsala’s Centenial last year and the 100th anniversary of World War I this year.

The timing of the Memorial just seems right. This Upsala Area Memorial is to help remember all veterans, from the Civil War to the Gulf War, but with an emphasis on our WWI veterans.

We envision the Upsala Area to include the city of Elmdale, South Elmdale, the fringes of Bowlus, Holdingford, and Swanville. To the South, St. Francis and those to the edges of Grey Eagle and Burtrum. (Approximately the size of our school district.)

Early last year we met with the city of Upsala to determine what city owned sites may be available. We did notice the empty lot off of Main St. owned by Gethsemane. We looked at all potential sites that would work for a Veteran’s Memorial. We kept coming back to the

In the Old Testament we find many occasions of God’s children coming together to sing and shout and praise the Lord. In Psalm 95:1 the “worship leader” looked at the crowd before him and said let’s “sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.” That invitation remains open to us today.

When we pause and ponder the grace of God in saving us and becoming our “Rock” - our only source of safety and security in times of trial and temptation, defeat and despair - it’s time to lift our voices in worship.

The Dept. of Agriculture this past week released the second draft of its controversial Nitrogen Management Plan.

Originally, they had planned to make it public in mid to late May, but pushed up the release date due, at least in part, to strong pressure from legislators and farm groups. An 80-day comment period starts this week, followed by a series of informational meetings around the state. After that, an administrative law judge will either accept or reject the rule or suggest changes.

When all these steps have been completed, Gov. Mark Dayton could be signing the rule by December.

Under current law, when the governor signs the rulemaking, it becomes official.

A bill passed by the House says that before the nitrogen rule can go into effect, it must come back to the Legislature for final approval. The merits of that provision have been hotly debated, and Gov. Dayton has even issued a veto threat if that provision is contained in any legislation sent to him for his signature and final passage.

At first glance, this latest revision of the rule is better than the previous one. It appears the department did take into account several of the suggested changes that were submitted. For example, a large area of northwest Minnesota was exempted from the rule banning fall application of nitrogen. A different soils map was used this time, and the solid layer of clay under the top soil was deemed adequate to prevent nitrogen from leaching into the ground water.

In the first draft of the rule, full sections of land (640 acres) were used to determine if the rule applied to individual fields within each section. In the second draft, the acreage was decreased to quarter sections (160 acres) in determining whether or not a particular field would be subject to the rule.

Another major change has to do with

well-water samples from areas known as “drinking water protection areas.” They will be used exclusively in determining whether or not mitigation efforts are needed. Originally, water samples from wells throughout townships were to be included when making that decision.

Most farmers are already doing many of the things this rule is calling for. And we can all agree that clean and safe drinking water is a priority. I think where the problem is coming from is a general lack of trust between the ag community and the administration in St. Paul. There has been a litany of efforts in recent years to further regulate farmers and their practices. From regulating seed treatments to road ditch mowing, from the buffer law and the taking of productive land without compensation, to this attempt at regulating when farmers can apply fertilizer. Taken together, they seem to be putting a target on production agriculture. And it’s occurring at a time when economic stress is already high on those trying to make a living on the farm.

The first of the major spending bills was passed off the House floor last week.

The education bill provides around $30 million going mainly for school safety initiatives. A category of funding known as Long Term Facility Maintenance has been expanded to allow spending on security projects. Additional state funding will go to a category known as Safe Schools revenue.

It’s based on an additional $18 per student, with a minimum of $30,000 per school district. There is also additional funding for mental health and school-linked programming to ensure better outcomes for all students.

The other spending bills will probably come up for debate this week, with much attention focused on the tax bill. We need to pass legislation that deals with changes made at the federal level. Our plan to accomplish that is different from the governor’s, but we need to compromise on this issue and get it done.

“Just because you can access a lake doesn’t mean it’s safe to do so,” said Rodmen Smith, director of the DNR Enforcement Division. “Ice this time of year is dangerously deceptive and can change markedly in a matter of minutes – and within just a few feet.”

Anyone who heads onto the ice this time of year should use a chisel to check the strength of the ice frequently and be sure to wear a life jacket or float coat, according to Lisa Dugan, DNR boat and water safety outreach coordinator. Adults also should be vigilant about keeping children away from ice and open water unless they’re accompanied by a responsible adult.

Spring burning restrictions begin

Warm temperatures and dry conditions mean increased wildfire risk, so the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will restrict open burning in the following counties effective immediately: Anoka, Beltrami (north), Benton, Chisago, Clay, Douglas, Grant, Hennepin, Isanti, Kanabec, Kittson, Lake of the Woods, Marshall, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Norman, Otter Tail, Pennington, Pine, Pope, Ramsey, Roseau, Sherburne, Stearns, Stevens, Todd, Traverse, Wadena, Wilkin, Wright.

The state will not issue burning permits for brush or yard waste in these counties until this ban is lifted.

“For more than a decade, spring burning restrictions have successfully reduced the number of wildfires we’ve had in Minnesota,” said Casey McCoy, DNR fire prevention supervisor. “In fact, wildfires are down more than 30 percent from a decade ago, thanks in large part to these restrictions.”

McCoy cautions that, to keep this trend going, people must continue to follow burn restrictions. He also encourages residents to use alternatives to

burning, such as composting, chipping, or taking brush to a collection site. For information on how to compost yard debris, visit the University of Minnesota’s Extension website.

Those who burn debris can be held financially responsible if their fire escapes and burns other property.

Operation Round Up contributes $48,900 to 87 local organizations Stearns Electric’s Operation Round Up Program contributed $48,900 to area organizations during its March meeting.

Through the Operation Round Up program, Stearns Electric Association gives its member-owners the opportunity to give back to the community by rounding up their electric bill to the nearest dollar.

Since the program’s inception in 1993, Operation Round Up (ORU) and Stearns Electric members have awarded over $2.1 million to local non-profit organizations and community service programs. The round up funds, no more than $11.88 per year, per member, are placed in a trust fund that is administered by the Trust Board appointed by the Cooperative’s elected Board of Directors.

Trust Board members met on March 14th to review applications and funding requests for the first quarter of 2018.

Eighty-seven organizations were selected to receive funds totaling between $100 to $1,500 in this round of contributions.

Among the contributions this quarter, nineteen local food shelves received $1,500 each to coincide with the March Campaign to match statewide food shelf donations dollar for dollar, a program sponsored by Minnesota FoodShare. Additionally, the Trust Board voted to provide all 22 area high schools within our service territory with $250 each to support each school’s drug/alcohol free school lock-in either at graduation or at prom.

The lingering cold weather is delaying ice-out on Minnesota lakes and rivers, which could make it difficult for DNR crews to have the 1,500 public water accesses it manages ready in time for the May 12 fishing opener.

“I want Minnesotans to know that we are doing everything we can to get ready for the fishing opener,” said DNR Commissioner Tom Landwehr, “but mostly what we need are warmer temperatures and sunshine.”

There are approximately 3,000 public water access sites statewide, and the DNR’s Parks and Trails Division manages about half of them.

“Winter weather is always a challenge to Minnesota’s public water access sites,” said Nancy Stewart, water recreation program consultant. “Because of the late ice-out this year, DNR crews will have a shorter window than usual to get boat ramps and docks ready for the May 12 fishing opener, but we will have as many of them ready as possible.”

tures and ice cause concrete to crack and buckle on the ramps. In some years, crews can get a head start on that work, even before ice-out, but this year the snow has prevented them from assessing damage, and the ramps can’t be re-leveled until the ground thaws.

In the meantime, crews are busy rehabbing docks by, for example, changing bumpers and wheels as needed so that they’ll be ready to pop in when the time comes.

“Even if every last dock isn’t in by the opener, there will be places to fish and boat,” said Stewart.

House Passes Health and Human Services, Transportation Legislation On Tuesday, the Minnesota House of Representatives passed legislation to reduce health care costs, combat the opioid epidemic, protect vulnerable adults, prevent fraud and abuse of public programs, and invest $385 million for road and bridge needs across the state.

The legislation was approved on a bipartisan vote of 82-43.

“The House bill prioritizes the needs of Minnesotans and addresses some of the gaps we see between the state and our residents,” said Health and Human Services Finance chair Rep.
